10 ANGELS IN AMERICA I HAVE EATEN LOTS OF TWO-MINUTE NOODLES. I don’t know how many times I had two-minute noodles while I was growing up. Definitely hundreds of times, if not thousands. I ate a lot of them when I was a struggling student, and later in my thirties, when we were a single income household with a big mortgage, they were a staple item. Apparently they can turn you into a homosexual. At least that’s the claim made earlier this year by Arief R. Wismansyah, the mayor of the Indonesian town of Tangerang, near Jakarta. According to Wismansyah babies drinking formula milk are also in danger of growing up gay. One of the more memorable moments from the presidential campaign of Dr Ben Carson was his assertion that people choose their sexuality. Carson said he had observed many people claim to be gay after being in prison. Last year in Saudi Arabia there was a warning to parents that dancing could lead to immorality and even homosexuality. The warning was issued after a group of men were arrested for dancing at a birthday party. Outspoken US pastor Kevin Swanson has put his case forward that Disney movies deliberately attempt to convert children into homosexuals. He was particularly concerned about the effect the film ‘Frozen’ might have on America’s youth. Add to these, a guy on the internet who claims that eating soy products lead to same sex attraction, an African spiritual leader who thinks being gay is a result of having tattoos, and the Dutch neuroscientist who thinks homosexuality is caused by pregnant mothers smoking.

Let’s not forget Bolivia’s president Evo Morales who claimed that people turn gay because there a too many hormones in chickens. Most recently an aspiring politician in NSW logged on to Twitter and announced his belief that the Safe Schools Coalition, a program designed to stop LGBTIQ+ kids being bullied, was attempting to turn straight kids into gay kids.

RHYS NICHOLSON

If any of this was even remotely true, even a glimmer of reality, then none of us would be single. We’d all be dancing around encouraging people to get cute tattoos of Kristoff while promoting a new range of soy based noodle products. There seems to be a never ending stream of people lining up to tell gay people that none of us were born this way. If only there was as much discussion into what makes people prejudiced, lacking empathy, and in many cases, just plain old stupid. The thing that gets us through these ridiculous statements and outrageous assertions is a good sense of humour. Luckily there’s a swag of gay and straight comedians heading our way to lift our spirits.

Musical theatre is having a renaissance period and Perth is set to be flooded with an excellent selection of whimsical treats over the coming months. Here’s a list of what’s on offer.

Cats

Crown Theatre, From 16th April www.crownperth.com.au

Singers Leo Sayer and Lulu are teaming up for a concert tour and the duo are set to play the Perth Concert Hall on Sunday July 3rd 2016. Scottish comedian and professional scamp Daniel Sloss is heading to the west side for Perth Comedy Festival this May. We interrupted the 25-year-old’s domination of the US comedy scene and his Melbourne shows to enlist him as our token straight pal ahead of his one-nightonly Regal Theatre performance. Is this your first time in Australia? I’ve been coming here since I was about 18/19. It’s my first time doing the Melbourne Comedy Festival but I’ve been going to Sydney since I was about 18 and I started coming to Perth about three or four years ago. The first time I came over to Australia I really fell in love with it and the people and the comedians to the point where the year after that, my mum made me sign a contract saying I wouldn’t move here. She can’t do that! It’s because there’s another comedian over here called Rhys Nicholson. When I first came over me and him just became best friends. We pretty much fell in love. So whenever I went home all I would talk about is how much I wanted to come back. Does Rhys’ fiancée know about this? (laughs) Absolutely! I’m very good friends with both of them. They hadn’t met the year I met Rhys, but the year after whenever we ran into each other it was like two kids at summer camp who didn’t want to seem too eager, so we played it very calm and cool. Eventually

he told me about his partner and obviously I was devastated even through it turns out he is equally, if not more, wonderful.

Ghost: The Musical

Crown Theatre, From 21st May www.crownperth.com.au

So between Scotland and here, do you notice a difference in comedy styles? I’m blown away by the talent of the new comics over here. It’s threatening in the most wonderful way being on these line-up with so many good comics – I’ve really got to work to be in the top percentile. We’re talking Rhys Nicholson and Nick Cody, Becky Lucas, Sam Campbell, Mel Buttle… the list is genuinely endless.

The tour commences at Sydney’s State Theatre on 23rd June before heading around the country, with these two icons of the industry performing all their hits separately and together. Tickets available from ticketmaster.com.au or at Perth Concert Hall.

Georgy Girl

Crown Theatre, From 8th July www.crownperth.com.au

I’m surprised you feel intimidated considering you’ve been on ‘Conan’ a record five times. In this business, you get used to a lot of things falling through at the last minute – so when I got called for the first time I was like, ‘Well, this isn’t gonna happen. There’s no way that this is gonna happen.’ Even on the day I was sat in the green room thinking, ‘something’s gonna come up’… and then someone came in and goes “Nelson Mandela just died.” I was like “Bastard!”, the most selfish way a comedian can be, so I asked “Does this mean I’m still going to be on TV?” and they were like “Yeah, you idiot. Jeez.”

Little Shop Of Horrors

His Majesty’s Theatre, From 5th August www.ticketek.com.au Local punk outfit Lionizer are touring the nation to promote their latest EP ‘Be Alone’. Drummer Bailey Lions says the song ‘Every Action Every Consequence’ will resonate with the queer community. “It’s about my struggle with gender dysphoria, the need for surgery, and the ongoing struggle to accept myself post op.”

When comedy musical trio Axis of Awesome returned from a year long hiatus they released a YouTube video addressing the question, and what happened to singer Jordan Raskopoulos’s beard? Fans of the show had taken to Twitter to discuss the singer’s decision to lose the distinctive facial hair, some said that rather than looking like Jack Black, the comedian now looked like Boo from ‘Orange is the New Black’.

A lack of positive media coverage had a big effect on how Jordan saw being transgender.

In a surprise announcement Jordan announced that there was an important reason, gender transition. The singer was now happily living life to the full as a woman. “That’s right, I’m a girl!” Jordan proudly declared.

“When I was a kid the only media that covered transgender issues was ‘The Jerry Springer Show’, what you saw was relationships being destroyed, or parent’s throwing their kids out, or violence. That just makes people feel ashamed.” Jordan said.

Speaking to OUTinPerth from Christchurch where the band are on tour Jordan said it was good to be back on stage after the long break.

The trio are heading to Perth with new show ‘Won’t Ever Not Stop Giving Up’ which features mostly a whole new set of songs.

“It’s been reassuring,” Jordan said, “There was a lot of worry and nerves about how the tour would go down and it’s been great to back on stage and it’s been cool that our fans don’t give a shit.’

“We do discuss transitioning a little bit in the show,” Jordan said, “but we spend as much time talking about an octopus.”

Jordan said most people had been really positive about her transition announcement except from a few idiots she’d encountered on the internet, but she brushes them aside saying; “It’s the internet, even if I hadn’t come out – they’d still be there.”

“Our act has not changed, our comedy hasn’t changed, and my voice hasn’t changed.” Jordan declares, joking that transitioning hasn’t given her any additional vocal range.

Since making the announcement Jordan said the trio had gained a lot of new fans. “Lots of trans people and queer people have reached out and said how good it was that I’d come out so publicly. We’re getting a lot of parents of trans kids coming to shows and saying it’s good that I can be a role model. Being a role model comes with a lot of pressure but it’s nice to know that it’s touched people.” Jordan said she realized how important role models for trans kids are, noting it was something that came up in one of her earliest medical appointments about transitioning. “There are more and more kids going through gender transitioning and as the visibility is there, and the acceptance is there fewer kids are going to feel ashamed like I did. “When I was kid there was nothing. All I had was my feelings, not knowing what they meant, and not having the language to articulate what I felt.

Jordan acknowledges that her band mates Lee Naimo and Benny Davis have been incredibly supportive. “They’ve been really good, they were some of the first people I told and they’ve been really supportive. I mean it’s been hard taking a whole year away from performing in both making videos and doing live shows.” Happily back on stage the trio are heading to Perth for the Comedy Festival and have four shows lined up at the Perth Town Hall from May 11-14. Community outrage at Safe Schools changes be deviant, unworthy and ‘asking for trouble’ in our lives.” Miller said. WA Parliamentarian Lynn MacLaren said older members of the community know that hiding your sexuality as a teenager can have lifelong effects. “I went to school in the ‘70s and there was a lot of people ‘in the closet’ back then. We grew up and we never found our identities.” MacLaren said. MacLaren highlighted that one of the biggest effect of the campaign against the program was a rush of schools wanting to sign up to the program. “There are an additional 32 schools that have signed up since this controversy began, and there’s one school which has in fear withdrawn.” MacLaren said. Over two hundred people attended a snap action protest in central Perth last month to voice their alarm over the Turnbull government’s decision to alter the Safe Schools Coalition program. In a move that has widely been described as a capitulation to right wing conservatives in the Liberal Party, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull ordered a review into the program after backbenchers labeled it a ‘Marxist social engineering program’. Rally organiser Farida Iqbal said the main concerns were the government’s decision to stop funding the successful program past 2017, a new requirement for parental permission for students to take part in the program, and that the program has been removed from primary schools. Oscar Kaspi-Crutchett, a 15 year old student at a Perth High School that runs the program, spoke about why he needed the program in his school. “As someone who lives and identifies as an

LGBT Australian I can tell you all now, with great shame, that homophobia and transphobia still exists in our schools. Bullying inflicted on LGBT students in undeniably endemic across the country.” Kaspi-Crutchett said. Patch Miller shared a personal account of how transgender youth benefit from good support programs. Miller attended the 2014 Safe Schools Symposium, an experience which they said was incredible as so many people were focused on making schools better. Miller shared disappointment that the government has taken such drastic action in response to the review by UWA’s Professor Bill Louden. “The review does not suggest that Turnbull government should strip the program of its well-researched goodness and restrict its effectiveness within school communities. I cannot stress how imperative it is for everyone to learn about sex, sexuality and gender diversity in supportive, understanding and respectful spaces – and not in a culture that portrays us to

School teachers also took to the stage to argue the program is vitally needed in Western Australian schools. Jesse Williams and Stan Schirmer said the program has wide reaching positive effects, and even improved the workplace for education professionals. Schirmer said the program was not just for LGBTIQ+ students, but for all students as straight students are often also the victims of homophobic and transphobic bullying. “I’ve had boys in my classes who have wanted to learn, who wanted to sit in class and listen and learn - and because they’ve wanted to do that they were tagged as ‘gay’. Those boys and girls, whether they’re LGBTIQ or not, they deserve to be safe in school and that’s what this program is for.’ Schirmer said. Labor’s Louise Pratt, who was a member of the Rudd and Gillard governments that set up the program, told the crowd that the program was created because parents wanted it.

Candlelight Memorial The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial aims to raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS. With 33 million people living with HIV today, this event serves to break down stigma and discrimination, cultivate global solidarity and give hope to new generations. Perth will host an AIDS Candlelight Memorial on Sunday May 15th at the AIDS Memories in Robertson Park, North Perth.

Trans* Pathways Survey Researchers have teamed up to conduct a study into mental health and barriers to accessing services for trans young people in Australia. The study aims to inform policies and the wider community about services may better meet the needs of trans youth. culture Black Swan State Theatre Company are staging a special 25th anniversary production of ‘Angels In America’, the groundbreaking story of the devastating AIDS crisis that shook the LGBT community in the 1980s and ‘90s. The play tells the bare and confronting story of eight characters whose stories interweave as they each navigate the role HIV/AIDS takes in their everyday lives. Actor Kenneth Ransom, who plays retired drag queen Belize, spoke to OUTinPerth about spirituality, drag and the longevity of ‘Angels In America’. I hear you have a personal connection with ‘Angels in America’? A man by the name of Oskar Eustis who is a brilliant dramaturg, ‘Angels’ is evidence of that, he now runs the Public Theatre in New York and he’s become a producer on ‘Hamilton’ – which is the next great American piece. [My wife] Kate was studying with him at the time at UCLA where he was teaching directing. So we happened to be two of the lucky participants who were watching the first reading, just by virtue of knowing Oskar. We watched it and thought, “We’ve never seen anything like this.” Does it still feel groundbreaking after 25 years? I remember Tony [Kushner] talking about the play at the 20th anniversary actually, and he was saying that some of the things in the play about the ominous future have actually happened. Global warming, for example, actually happened but we don’t seem to accept they’ve happened. It seems we have less fear about it. What we had before the turn of the century that we don’t have now is that there was a real anticipation about what that meant with Y2K and the like. The whole world was going to change in 2000, somehow the clock would tick over and there’d be this difference. A lot of the things discussed in ‘Angels’ still need to be addressed today. You can live with HIV now, but at the time that Angels came out [HIV/AIDS] felt like a death sentence. That was what people believed about it. Now that people can live with HIV, it’s taken that edge off of it. Talking to my wife though, who is directing the play, we had to remember that that was the feeling at the time. Everything that’s talked about in ‘Angels’ is still a major issue today. One theme that is certainly still relevant is the characters reconciling spirituality and sexuality. Is Belize a particularly religious character? No! (laughs). His religion is life. Or drag. That’s what great about Belize, is that he’s a truth-teller. It occurred to me that he’s like a fool or a court jester, he just

says it. It’s not necessarily said in the nicest way but somehow the truth just comes out of his mouth. The Mormon character is grappling with religion and Louis is grappling with religion in the complete opposite direction. Belize is his chosen name, his chosen persona and that’s his means of escape. Belize is a drag queen, but he doesn’t don drag in the show. How do you prepare for that role? I’ve been going to drag shows. I went to go and see Barbie Q and I saw some shows in Brisbane while I was there. I will probably go and see more, just to know that environment that Belize comes out of to see what makes them tick. Fighting Stigma Western Australia has a new representative for the National Association of People Living With HIV/AIDS (NAPWHA). Ryan Oliver has taken over from Izaac Buckley, while Paul Baines has been re-elected for a second year long term. Oliver told OUTinPerth he decided to stand for the role because he wanted to be proactive in reducing the level of stigma around HIV. “I want to deal with the stigma, and get more awareness out there about HIV.” The new health advocate said. Oliver said he had met younger gay guys whose lack of knowledge about the reality of HIV had left him “gob smacked” and improving the level of education about safe sex and PrEP treatment options was one of his goals. Paul Baines said the lack of progress on the introduction of PrEP treatment is one of the big topics that community needs to address. “There’s a wealth of history in using this medication, but we’ve still got a government that isn’t moving quick enough. We’re still facing infections every week because we’re not putting people on PrEP.” Baines said. The medication that effectively stops the spread of HIV has been approved in Canada, the USA and France, but despite several trials being run

in Australia – it’s not widely available. A situation that Baines describes as “ludicrous”. As none of the trials have been held in Western Australia the NAPWHA representatives felt that this has led to many people in the local community having a low level of awareness of the preventative medication. At the end of his first year as a representative of people living with HIV Baines said he has learned a lot. “I think what I’ve learnt is, the community really needs a voice, and sometimes we struggle to know what that voice is.” Baines said. “We still don’t clearly know what we want.” One way the duo have proposed to improve this is by increasing the number of community forums that are held each year. After the most recent forum a working group has been set up to focus on what the specific needs of people in WA are. Ageing and Aged Care for HIV positive people, reducing stigma and discrimination and improving support for people living with HIV are some of the key issues that were raised at the recent forum. Kansas proposes anti-trans law The US state of Kansas is considering bringing in laws that would make it illegal for transgender people to use the bathroom matching their gender identity. Students who encounter someone using the “incorrect” bathroom would be awarded $2,500. The proposed ‘Student Privacy Act’ would require students of all public schools and universities to use the restroom corresponding to their assigned-at-birth sex, and not the gender they identify with. The bill defines gender as “determined by a person’s chromosomes and is identified at birth by a person’s anatomy.” The proposal has been condemned by transgender rights activists who have said the move will lead to transgender people being targeted. Tom Witt, executive director of Equality Kansas, told the The Lexington Herald Reader the bills would ban transgender students from using restroom facilities appropriate to their gender. “This is isolating kids,” Witt said, “and it’s not going to end well. “It’s outing them. It’s putting a target on their backs.” Republican Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook, who is in favour of the restrictions, has said they are needed for privacy and public safety reasons. “I think any child or young adult has a right to have their privacy protected when they’re in various stages of undress,” the senator said.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups have challenged the law. The introduction of the discriminatory law has also been challenged by the White House.

Sweden to print Pride postage stamp Sweden’s postal service have revealed they will add a Pride flag stamp to their collection. PostNord said the decision is “a reflection of modern Sweden where the importance of diversity is self-evident.” PostNord spokesperson Per Ljungberg says by issuing the Pride stamp, the service want to emphasise the equal value of all people and the strength represented by people’s unique qualities and differences. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the Pride Flag has been reproduced on a stamp – which makes it particularly gratifying that people will now be able to send affectionate greetings with the Pride Flag stamp to all corners of the world.” The stamp designed by artist Lisa Rydell will be in circulation from May this year.

North Carolina allows LGBT discrimination North Carolina in the latest state in the USA to bring in laws that discriminate against LGBT people. Last month Republicans in the state of North Carolina passed a bill called HB2 that removed all state based ordinances that protected LGBT people. The new law that was signed by Governor Pat McCrory now makes it legal for LGBT people to be fired from their jobs because of their sexuality, be refused service, be evicted or be denied service to any public facilities. Politicians were apparently only given five minutes to read the new laws before they were quickly debated and passed, the Governor immediately signed the legislation. The state based law was introduced in response to a law passed in the city of Charlotte that provided protection for LGBTI people and stopped

The law, introduced in 2013, was passed by Russian lawmakers “for the purpose of protecting children from information advocating for a denial of traditional family values.” Russian publication 29, reports that a complaint was lodged with Russian authorities, saying the advertisement contains “elements of propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia.” The campaign video for Calvin Klein’s new scent ‘ck2’ features a number of couples, two of which are comprised of same-sex partners with the slogan, “A new scent for the two of us.”

HELLO BOYS!

Sydney’s most sensual male pole dancers Blue Phoenix and Lennox will be making their Connections debut with a very special performance. Take a peep at what these fellows are selling.

Saturday 30th April, from 8pm, Connections Nightclub, 81 James St, Northbridge

Where did Betty Grumble begin? Betty Grumble began in my guts where love and anger mingled to create her as a kind of war mask. Her first outing was at a queer talent quest on Oxford St. With a deranged pageant tantrum act – she (very ironically) won – and has been gigging since. How would you describe a Betty Grumble performance? A Grumble show is a collision of comedy and horror. She is a surreal showgirl and always delivers highly energetic thrashings of song and dance. It’s a genre-smash of drag, feminist performance art, cabaret, burlesque and shamanic striptease. She is grotesque and seductive, a faery at the bottom of the garden and sex clown spinning in the middle of the dance floor.

more push-backery. I’m deeply moved by histories of artists who used their work to simultaneously celebrate and challenge our humanity. I’m inspired by the idea of connection through the ritual of live performance and partying. Your show is ‘Sex Clown Saves the World’, what does the world need saving from? Greed, lack of empathy, cruelty, war, the patriarch, fracking, fascism, bigots, ourselves and the tyranny of the mundane. Mostly ourselves. We need to reconnect with nature, the true power – the world... And then we might save her, or at least in trying – find peace. What type of attitude should people bring to your show?

Where do you find inspiration?

All of them.

I find inspiration in nature and the nightclub. I respond unapologetically to the world around me and what I think needs

The Brisbane

Local drag star Feminem the Future took a big leap this year and created her own show for the Fringe Festival. ‘Mad as Hell’ was so popular it sold out before opening night. Now Feminem is bringing the show back for an extra performance at Connections for everyone who didn’t get a chance to see it. While audiences flocked to see the show, many were surprised that the talented drag artist hadn’t ventured into the world of cabaret earlier. “I think I just haven’t had the right concept before.” Feminem told OUTinPerth. “I’ve just been building the ‘Mad as Hell’ brand by default with my YouTube videos and my natural personality. Everyone knows that I can be a bit fiery. Creating a show just became the logical extension. In her ‘YouTube’ videos Feminem delivers scathing opinions on the things that have driven her crazy and made her ‘mad as hell.’ The straight to camera monologues capture an essential part of the performer’s persona. “The videos are completely unedited, there’s nothing planned, it’s completely raw. The

show is a little different, it’s scripted but it’s very much in the same style of the video.” Feminem said. There are a few things that annoy Feminem and can quickly see her turn into someone who is mad as hell. Uninvited touching and not respecting boundaries top the list but drivethru service also gets a swipe. “Oh, fast food that’s not fast! The frozen coke machine is not working, the ice-cream machine is not working.” Feminem lists off. “From every walk of life there’s always someone who is doing something so far from the realm of reality that drives me insane.” Don’t miss ‘Mad as Hell’ on Friday April 29th at Connections Nightclub. Grab tickets from www.connectionsnightclub.com

I am not usually a fan of big pubs, I like my bars small and intimate. Every now and again, though, a pub reigns supreme. This pub is the Brisbane Hotel.

which is a great way for them to showcase what’s on offer but also gives customers a chance to meet people and learn about what their drinking.

Although it’s been around forever, The Brisbane has had more than one face. It used to be a tradie pub. Some years ago it got a facelift and became one of the places that I call home.

4. The team. Some of the staff have been working there longer than I’ve been drinking there. There just shows how great of a venue it is. Staff that stick around that long really know their stuff, about the industry and the products being sold. That means you get great service from knowledgeable staff. What more could you want?

Over the past eight years, it has been a place where I have celebrated and commiserated, fallen in love, laughed for hours, people watched, shared food and drank some wonderful booze. The Brisbane, is 100% well rounded and here are the reasons why you should put it on your list of watering holes. 1. It’s is incredibly diverse. There’s a restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a deck and a big garden area. 2. The food. Pizza? Check. Bar snacks? Check. Full menu? Check. Sharing foods? Check. There’s literally something for everyone on the food front and everything I’ve ever ordered had been fresh and light. I love spending long lunches in the sunshine with a group and tucking in to everything they have to offer. 3. Their booze. From cocktails to wines, spirits and beers, their range covers accessible and fancy. They’ve started doing free beer tastings on a Sunday

5. The garden. I love the outdoor area. You can catch some rays, enjoy a drink, listen to the tunes and easily lose a day. Tables can be booked, but it’s rare for them all be filled. I have spent hours sitting in the corner people watching and exploring their menu. 6. Pool table. Yes, there is a good pub in Perth with a pool table. Rejoice! I love that you can kick back and shoot some pool. 7. Sunday sessions. This is the reason I fell in love with the Bris. Busy summer Sunday’s spent sharing bottles of bubbles and eating pizza. Perfect. The Brisbane is on the corner of Brisbane St and Beaufort St in Highgate. Alice Mod

comedy star-struck by her. There’s much more famous people in the room but it’s this weird thing when it’s someone that you just really admire, so I just quietly freaked out. She got her boob out on the Gala. Your show was a work-in-progress at Perth’s Fringe World, is it a complete show now?

Rhys Nicholson brought his killer Fringe World show ‘Work In Progress’ to Perth earlier this year and tickled audiences with a wit as sharp as his suits. After some tweaks, adjustments and a run at Melbourne Comedy Festival, Rhys returns with a bona fide show for a four night run at His Majesty’s. Leigh Hill caught up with Nicholson ahead of his travels to talk lip-synching, boobs and comedy. I saw you’ve been lip-synching at Melbourne Comedy Festival - what’s that about?

that because it’s the most satisfying feeling in the world to make it rain.

It’s this dumb thing... I was on Melbourne Roadshow and my friend Bridget had been planning to do these lip-sync battles and I do these lip-sync things on Instagram and we were just drunk. A lot of my stories start with, “I was just drunk.”

I do ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’, the Barbra Streisand version. I’ve done “And I’m Telling You...” from ‘Dreamgirls’. I think I’m going to do Kate Bush maybe next week with a ballet ribbon.

It’s a late night show we run where I bring comedians from the festival to lip-sync and apparently people really like it. Well you’ve got RuPaul’s Drag Race and Lip Sync Battle to thank for that blowing up. Yeah, we’re just hoping Jimmy Fallon or RuPaul don’t sue us. What would be your number one song to perform? I did Bitch Better Have My Money. I went to a discount store and bought a lot of fake money and made it rain which I’ve never done before. I highly recommend everybody does

It’s a very different show now. There’s a lot of the same stuff in it but it’s a lot better. A lot of people were thinking that it was just the name of the show but it actually was a work-in-progress. It was just a silly thing but I’m happy with it now. I was glad people came out. You Perth people are so nice! You come to things! That’s not gonna happen anywhere else, it’s insane. Catch Rhys Nicholson’s ‘Bona Fide’ at His Majesty’s Theatre from Thursday 28th April – Sunday 1st May. Tickets and further information available from perthcomedyfestival.com

culture Larry Dean has a very productive poster for his show. The Scottish comedian is photographed sitting in a public toilet with a microphone coming through a glory hole. It’s an image that captures your attention. “Some people don’t get it.” Dean said, “My Mum saw it and she said ‘so is this you trying to connect with a different dimension?’ So then I had to explain cottaging to my Mum, and she said ‘You don’t actually do that do you?’ – No Mum, it’s just a funny poster.”

Craig Hill’s new show is called ‘Playing with my Selfie’. The Scottish comedian said the names for his shows come from fleeting moments in conversations when suddenly a phrase jumps out that works as a pun or double entendre. Last year when the comedian discovered that my partner and I were about to head off to his hometown of Edinburgh, he shared some great tips for local restaurants. I tell him we had a great meal at the ‘Scram and Scallie’.

In his show Dean shares stories from his life as “That’s such a good place, I’m glad you like it, I aim to a gay man including his coming out experience. please.” Hill said before declaring, “There’s one now ‘I Aim to Please’ that could be my tour next year. “Mine’s not as bad as other people, you hear “I like things that are provocative and a little cheeky. stories of people getting chucked out of their You’ve got to let people know what they’re coming to”, house, and having all their friends disown the comedian pauses before adding “that could work as them. I think I had a weird one, since I’m not a title too - People need to know what they’re coming to”. stereotypically camp, nobody can usually tell. “My coming out didn’t involve my friends saying it was wrong, they were just surprised. They were all going ‘really?’

Hill laughed and said he doesn’t need an audience to have a good time, the simplest things in life can send him into a comedic spin.

“I thought I was going to have to go and prove that I was gay” Dean said.

“I’m heading off on holiday today and I’ve spent all morning looking for my ‘Meghan Trainers’ Hill said, “I call my trainer’s Meghan cause I’m all about the bass!”

Art lover, screenwriter, funny woman and national treasure Hannah Gadsby will be joining the slew of comedians heading to Western Australia for Perth Comedy Festival later this month. We caught up with the duchess of deadpan delivery to talk ‘Please Like Me’, Taylor Swift and her all-new show. Are you bringing a new show to the west coast this time around? This one’s called Dogmatic. It’s a few little good fun yarns… basically I’m recreating Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ World Tour. Are you having the same sort of frenzied reaction from your fandom? Uh, no… but we’ll work on that. Hopefully by the time I get to Perth: Rabid. I’ll start whipping up a frenzy over here then. Love it! Thanks. You can be in my squad. We’ll have to find some time to film an over-dramatic video clip with explosions and slow motion walking. And bullying people! I can’t wait. Are you looking forward to coming back to Perth? Yeah, I like Perth. I’m doing a new venue this year so I’m pretty excited about that. Fancy. I’ve got a brother who lives in Geraldton… and also a friend I used to play golf with when I was a kid so I get to visit some good people while I’m in Perth. You big into golf? Nah. I used to be when I was a kid. What happened? It’s boring. I grew up in a small town in Tasmania so golf seemed fun then. Then I found cinemas, you know? I mean I like walking, but not all day.

Aside from your current comedy festival run, ‘Please Like Me’ has been a pretty big deal. It was fun! Well, no not fun, the storyline wasn’t that fun was it? Nah, it was good. It’s such a great cast and crew so it’s always fun group of people to be involved with. I heard you needed a bit of help to get psyched up for your first onscreen kiss? Eh, it was alright in the end. I just hooked in, you know? It’s very nerve-wracking, it’s not my kind of thing to just be pashing a stranger on an early morning but I’m very professional. The first time I started kissing too soon, the camera wasn’t anywhere near us. They were doing a leading shot and it was a little embarrassing. You just gotta keep kissing and I didn’t know how long I could maintain for… but I did it. Very professional. How does it feel knowing that kiss was broadcast around the world? I don’t really think about it. Sometimes people come up to me in the streets and remind me and I’m like… “Oh yeah. Yeah.” I don’t really watch it on the TV. I mean I watch it when I get round to it but I don’t think about it much. I keep moving like a shark. Remind Hannah Gadsby of her on-screen kiss at her new show ‘Dogmatic’ at His Majesty’s Theatre, Saturday 23rd April. Tickets available from perthcomedyfestival.com. Leigh Hill

The hilarious Stephen K Amos in back in Australia and will be making his way to Perth next month. We caught up with the cheeky comedian and got the low-down on the touring lifestyle, living life as a celebrity and why Amos is ‘the laughter master’. Welcome back to Australia I love it, I love the weather, the people, everything.

Here is a rare talent with a voice of extraordinary beauty and versatility. The Australian (Katie Noonan)

They are one of a handful of string quartets that have come to represent an elite in redefining the nature and function of a string quartet ensemble. The Scottish Herald (Brodsky Quartet)

KATIE NOONAN AND THE BRODSKY QUARTET WILL COLLABORATE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN ‘WITH LOVE AND FURY’. THIS UNSTOPPABLE COLLISION OF COLOSSAL TALENT WILL PROVIDE AUDIENCES WITH A SPINE-TINGLING EXPERIENCE AS THEY RE-IMAGINE THE WORDS OF AUSTRALIAN POET JUDITH WRIGHT WITH THE MUSIC OF OUR FINEST COMPOSERS.

This time you’re making your first trip to Tasmania, have you been yet? I have never been to Tasmania; everyone tells me it’s beautiful, it’s stunning. I have read up on the history of Tasmania and I will not be holding back I’ve never been to Tasmania, it’s the state we quite often forget to put on the map. I know it’s such a shame, by all accounts; the beauty of the place is breathtaking. So if nobody is there, at least I’ll be able to get some good photographs. Are there any places in the world you’d like to go to that you haven’t been before? I’d like to go to Greenland, the Antarctic; see what that’s all about. I haven’t been on any high mountains so maybe that’s on the cards. Your show is called the “Laughter Master”, what gave you that title idea?

Well I’m like an orchestra and I’m the orchestra leader. The audience is my very talented musicians and someone’s got to be in control and that person is me. So you’re going to laugh and were going to master the art of laughing and we’re gonna think along the way. I watched your show a couple of years

ago when you were in Perth and it felt very much like it ‘just happened’. Thank you, that’s the image I like to put across. If something happens in the room, I want to always be in the moment and if something happens and it’s funny, then we’ll run with it. There is a script obviously, so long as you guys keep enjoying, I have done my work. That’s interesting because I remember reflecting on it thinking, I’m sure there was a script but it didn’t feel like it was there. Great! For me personally, the best comedians and some of the best shows are the ones you can actually remember. And time just goes by so quickly because you are all sharing that experience together. Do you find comedy is different depending on the size of the room you play? Yes, it depends on the room, day of the week, like if it’s a Wednesday evening it can be a very quiet audience or if it’s a big show, a Friday or Saturday the audience can be very boisterous. But it also depends on the time as well. So yes, lots of many factors and variables. You seem to be on a constant touring circuit, is there a point you’d like to do something a bit different? Well I think if I found love and we decided to have kids then maybe that day will come. But as of yet I am enjoying the lifestyle, traveling around the world doing jokes. I mean what other job would you want? Stephen K Amos plays His Majesty’s Theatre April 28 – May 1 for the Perth Comedy Festival. Graeme Watson

The Cat Empire Rising With The Sun

Pet Shop Boys Super Three years ago Pet Shop Boys got a new lease of life when they launched their own record label and teamed up with producer Stuart Price for their ‘Electric’ album. Now they return with the same set up for their thirteenth studio album, not counting ballets, musicals and soundtracks. Super sees the band in fine form, opening track ‘Happiness’ is instantly catchy as Neil Tennant sings about how it’s

a long way to heaven. Pet Shops Boys have never been afraid of pulling back the vocals and letting the music shine through and this track has some killer beats. The lead single ‘The Pop Kids’ has beautifully reflective lyrics asking if we remember the pop music of the ‘90s? It’s quite reminiscent of ‘Being Boring’ a song they released at the dawn of the ‘90s. The boys have their tongue firmly in cheek with ‘Groovy’ and ‘Burn’ is a stomper. Do you need another Pet Shop Boys album – absolutely, this one really is Super.

This album opens up with the track ‘Wolves’ a song that showcases the bands signature sound of trumpets and a party time vibe, but there are new elements, world music ingredients and really great keyboards. The Cat Empire are here for a good time and they work their way through a hybrid of reggae, ska, and funk sounds. The songs are short, consistent and catchy. A great album for a summer party, or for driving to the beach. GW

Nineteen years after his untimely death there can’t be much recorded material from Jeff Buckley that hasn’t been released. These songs from 1993 were recorded a year before Buckley put out his debut record and there largely covers of other well-known artist’s songs. Hearing Buckley sing Dylan, Sly and the Family Stone, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin and others is delightful. There’s two of Buckley’s songs on here too, including an early version of ‘Grace’. Hearing the tune in its infancy is intriguing, it’s much subtler than the version that would capture music fans’ attention a year later. GW

Tim Hecker Love Streams Canadian electronic musician Tim Hecker returned to Iceland to record this his seventh album. It’s an ambient, but loud, mix of sounds that you can lose yourself in. Out of focus, full of echoes and filled with muted tones this is an adventurous soundscape. Highlights include ‘Violet Monumental Part II, which sounds like a steel drum band has been trapped in a glacier, the comically titled ‘Up Red Bull Creek’ which has a folksy charm and ‘Collapse Sonata’ which is full of space and subtlety. Papua New Guinea born Ngaiire is one of a very exciting line-up of artists heading to Bunbury this year for Groovin’ The Moo. The soulful chanteuse has been praised for challenging the boundaries of contemporary R&B, citing an eclectic range of influences from Alicia Keys to Chet Faker and even WA’s own John Butler.

Fresh off her APRA award win last year, Ngaiire continues to defy expectations of genre. Her latest single ‘Diggin’ draws from pop, electronic, R&B and traditional influences, elegantly woven together into a funky audial tapestry. Catch Ngaiire live at Groovin’ The Moo, Saturday 7th May at Hay Park in Bunbury. For more information, tickets and the full line-up, head to GTM.net.au.

Remember blonde haired Lionel from ‘The United States of Tara’? How about leather clad motorcycle riding Juliet on ‘The Bill’? Do you recall Ianto Jones from Torchwood? What about Kyle Bishop from ‘Smash’? Well, none of them were straight and all of them died. Actually a lot of gay characters on TV die. Renly Baratheon in ‘Game of Thrones’ was gay and was killed by a shadow spirit. Paul Woodrugh in ‘True Detective’ was shot. Kash in the UK version of ‘Shameless’ burned to death. Chris Keller in ‘Oz’ ended up breaking his neck,. Richie and Ronald were two other gay characters in ‘Oz’ who died. Matt Fielding from ‘Melrose Place’ was killed off in a car accident. Franky

Doyle in ‘Prisoner’ was shot trying to escape. Lance on ‘The Bill’ was strangled by a serial killer, ‘Sandy Lopez’ in ‘E.R.’ died fighting a fire. Naomi, one of the queer characters on ‘Skins’ died of cancer. These examples though are just the tip of the iceberg. Last month on the blog Autostraddle, they listed out 148 lesbian and bisexual women who’ve died on TV. While at website Queerty, the authors have provided a list of 108 male characters who’ve been killed off on TV series over the years. The underlying message that’s been sent – LGBT character’s don’t get happy endings, in TV world LGBT characters are more likely to come to a sad and sticky ending. Kill Off Your Gays What’s kicked off this catalogue of queer deaths is the recent deaths of two more characters in prime time dramas. The TV series ‘The 100’ recently killed off a lesbian character. While aspiring doctor Denise on ‘The Walking Dead’ was brutally shot through the head with a cross-bow.

season they introduced three LGBT characters to the show, but now they’ve already killed one off. The recent deaths have led to the start of a movement calling on TV producers to stop killing off LGBT characters at a higher rate to straight characters in their shows. A new website called LGBT Fans Deserve Better is spearheading the campaign. The campaign has got the attention of Jason Rothenburg, the show runner of ‘The 100’ who has responded to the criticism. “I’ve been powerfully reminded that the audience takes that ride in the real world — where LGBTQ teens face repeated discrimination, often suffer from depression and commit suicide at a rate far higher than their straight peers.” Rothenburg wrote on the web platform Medium. “Where people still face discrimination because of the color of their skin. Where, in too many places, women are not given the same opportunities as men, especially LGBTQ women who face even tougher odds. And where television characters are still not fully representative of the diverse lives of our audience. Not even close.” Graeme Watson

Wentworth returns Popular prison drama ‘Wentworth’ will be back on Foxtel on May 10th. The last season had a fiery end, and Season 4 picks up the action four months later. The 12 episode season will see Bea Smith trying to regain her position as ‘top dog’, while Frankie is adjusting to life on the outside. This year actress Sigrid Thornton joins the cast.

BARCELONA CHRISTMAS NIGHT (M) Directed by Dani de la Orden

Described as Love Actually in Spanish, the city of Barcelona features as much as the ensemble cast of Spanish actors. Five stories weave together lessons in love. As the night before Christmas progresses, the stories that range from birth to death show the mess that people seem to make of their lives in between. Some are humorous and some are serious. There’s the drama of having a new baby, the desperate romantic who is trying to have a one night stand without falling in love and the roommates who find themselves in a threesome. There’s an unexpected encounter with a former lover after many years and a grandmother who needs to make an announcement to her grown-up children about her lifelong female partner. This year’s Spanish Film Festival screens 31 films at Cinema Paradiso and Luna on SX 21 April – 11 May, with an opening night after-party at Connections Nightclub.

LABYRINTH OF LIES (M)

EYE IN THE SKY (MA)

WHERE TO INVADE NEXT (M)

It was 1958 when a school teacher is recognised as a being a guard from the Nazi death camp Auschwitz where more than a million people lost their lives. Journalist Gnielka (André Szymanski) tries to get justice but, in a country trying to forget, many former Nazis were still in positions of power in Germany. Young State attorney Johann Radmann (Alexander Fehlig) takes up the challenge to find the proof needed to bring the guard to trial and finds himself in a maze of records, traumatic personal accounts and cover-ups. This German (with English subtitles) docudrama is based on the real life events that lead to the trial of many of those who ran the German prison camp in Poland. Nominated by Germany for Best Foreign Film in the Academy Awards, the film marks the time when the nation started to acknowledge its recent barbaric history and learn from it.

An unmanned aircraft hovers 2,000 metres above Nairobi in Kenya. The drone is armed and controlled from a US air force base in the Nevada Desert. While US intelligence experts in Pearl Harbour identify the Somali militants in a Nairobi house, UK Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) commands the mission from a military base outside London and General Frank Benson (Alan Rickman his cutting best in his last screen role) is in Whitehall with several British government officials. These are just some of the complexities of drone warfare as the man on the ground tries to move a young girl away from the target area. Modern warfare from afar demands that military decisions take into account legal, political and moral implications. The tension is excruciating as minutes count down while people in various countries debate whether to launch the missile or lose the chance to stop suicide bombers.

Despite spending billions of dollars on warfare, America hasn’t actually won a war since WWII… and the country has problems no war can solve. Provocative Academy Award-winning producer/writer/ director Michael Moore forms a one-man army to invade other countries. Subversive as always, he points out that everyone else seems to be living ‘the American dream’ except those who live in America. The indomitable Moore decides he will plunder several nations for their best ideas and return with the means to make America a great country again. His journey is hilarious as he raids Italy, France, Finland, Slovenia, Germany, Portugal, Norway, Iceland and Tunisia. Moore admits that his filmmaking is largely intuitive. Moore seduces his audience with his brashness and his intelligence as vital truths emerge from all the humour. His documentary is brilliant and, rather than take a cynical outlook, Moore is full of enthusiasm that things can change.

Dr. Jayson Oates tells us that when it comes to cosmetic surgery a lot of people have been looking for a pathway that delivers a larger penis. Over many years the products available to practitioners have been gradually improving and today injectable dermal fillers are allowing men to add a little more, if they feel they could benefit from a little extra. Unlike surgical options, this procedure can be completed in an hour and has a short recovery time. It’s something you could get done on a long lunch break. Since Academy Face and Body began offering the procedure it’s been growing in popularity. Their Sydney clinic is now treating several people each week and the treatment is gaining fans in Perth too. Dr. Oates said people considering the procedure should have realistic expectations of what can be achieved. “We do get people who come in and they want to be the biggest their partner has ever seen,” Dr. Oates said, “but it’s not really about that. Like everything in cosmetic surgery it’s about making the person feel more comfortable about themselves and their own body. It’s not necessarily about trying to impress other people.” “We can’t make a small or average penis into a gigantic one, it just doesn’t work like that, but you can make a noticeable improvement.” What the procedure can do is add around 15% - 30% to the circumference of the penis. The added weight can often also lead to a little lengthening too.

How long the effects will last is different for different people, but when the same product is used on people’s faces the effectiveness lasts around two years. Dr. Oates said when applied to the penis, the effects could be longer as the enzyme that eventually breaks down the hyaluronic acid based product is found in lower concentrations in the penis, but sometimes small top-ups are needed. One of the key considerations when weighing up having a cosmetic procedure is the safety aspect. While there are some attractive prices for having procedures done overseas Dr. Oates said having a procedure in Australia was far more advantageous because you can have regular contact with your doctor. More information on injectable penis augmentation can be found at www.academyfaceandbody.com.au Graeme Watson

Get Down at A few years ago I was in New York. It was February. It was cold and snow covered the city. On a Sunday night we headed down to the Lower East Side to check out the 718 Sessions, a disco night run by acclaimed DJ Danny Krivit. Alongside Krivit on the bill was legendary DJ John Morales, the man behind some of the earliest 12inch mixes of dance tunes. We’d be warned to get their early, as the club is famous for filling quickly. The doors opened at 6pm. We got there around half an hour earlier. Already there was a queue stretching down the street. We made through the doors and within 15 minutes the club was full, everyone was on the dance floor and long lost underground classic disco tunes were coming one after the other. The crowds was diverse, people from all different backgrounds. People in their 20’s through to people who were most likely partying at The Paradise Garage and Studio 54. I’ll never forget watching a lady in her 50’s or

60’s in the middle of the dance floor, wearing blue denim overalls, she was having such a good time, and you got the feeling she’d been enjoying the dance floor for decades. The music Danny outstandingly good.

Connections Nightclub have planned a tantalizing evening of performance with HELLO BOYS! Two of Australia’s most sensual male pole dancers Blue Phoenix and Lennox are heading to Perth to stimulate your senses and show you what they’re working with. We caught up with the boys ahead of their travels. How did you first get into performing as a pole dancer? Phoenix: I first started pole dancing after I bought an online voucher and tried a casual class - and never looked back! A few months later I had my first stage experience in a group show in Brisbane and the rest is history! Lennox: Long story short - Felix Cane. A friend of mine showed me her performance videos and I was in total awe. I was introduced to the beauty and art of pole dance. Back then I was living in Perth and my friend told me Felix Cane was teaching at a studio near me. Why wait? I went straight to the studio and signed up for a trial class and that was it. I was completely hooked and I was fortunate enough to learn from Felix herself and the other beautiful and talented pole dancers Perth had to offer until I relocated to Sydney. What’s been the hardest move to master? Phoenix: The hardest moves for me to master had been flexibilityoriented moves. When I started pole, my flexibility was shockingly nonexistent, so all split and back-bending moves have been a challenge. The most challenging for me, is anything where I need to grab my foot behind and above my head like an eagle. Lennox: It’s hard to single out one move in particular and call it the hardest, but they are usually back bending contortion level flexibility moves. I do have my favourite move to master and that is “The Eagle” created by the legend in the pole community, Felix Cane, who is based here in Perth! The move that captivated me with its beautiful ballerina like spiral shape and demonstration of extreme flexibility. How do people react when you tell them this is your creative expression? Phoenix: People are generally very positive about the fact that I pole dance, and often want to know more about where I train, my shows, and how they can try it themselves. Sometimes people are surprised that I pole dance as a male, but when they see what we do, they always react positively and with praise.

Lennox: People love it. When they can clearly see how much I love pole, they have no choice but to respect my devotion. I get excited when people get curious because then I can show them how beautiful, fun, and athletic pole can be. Although I haven’t met a single person who had a problem with me pole dancing, you often see people with preconceived ideas of pole and I myself might have been guilty of that until I realised what a beautiful form of art it can be. It makes you fit and healthy, it is so much fun and it empowers you. Try pole everyone! Would you describe yourself as naturally confident, or has pole dancing brought you out of your shell? Phoenix: Since I began performing, my confidence has definitely grown and improved. I’ve never been comfortable in the spotlight having not been happy with my body growing up, but fitness modelling and pole dancing has certainly opened up a new world to me and changed the way I project myself in public and respond to a crowd watching and judging me. It certainly has helped me grow and become more confident and strong as a character. Lennox: I think I am generally a confident person but I do have my struggles as we all do. Pole dancing definitely has helped me come out of my shell and become more and more comfortable with expressing who I am. Essentially you’d have to be confident to a certain level as you are performing half-naked in front of an audience, (You need skin contacts against the pole to grip on). What pole dancing does to me physically is it gives me sense of achievement as it challenges me. When you train hard and you see yourself improving, it is very rewarding. Pole also allows me to live my dream of becoming a performer and gives me the platform to express myself and my emotions.
