Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret About Gin has been selling out at fringe festivals across the country and now it’s coming to WA. Sexual performance artist Glitta Supernova returns to Fringe World with a platter of psychedelic, satirical, personal and political storytelling and a heaped side of physical comedy.

Starring Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood, the show takes it name from a phrase that arose in the 1800’s when after gin was suggested as a medicine for women, the birth rate in London dropped dramatically.

Supernova invites audiences to get on the Bordello body bus and take a trip down the

We admitted to Maeve Marsden that the only song we could think of that mentions gin was Sloe Gin by Dream Mclean.

unpaved strip in an intimately fleshy foray through the parallel universes of ‘90s club culture and the theatre. Following the success of an award-nominated season of Let’s Get METAphysical, Supernova promises an evening of red light surrealism that bridges the gap between intimacy and objectification; “tits & art.”

“There are loads, and indeed many great songs that we couldn’t squeeze into the show.” Marsden told us, “ The songs in the show with gin references include That Woman’s Got Me Drinking by The Popes, Misery and Gin by Merle Haggard, You Know I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse and Gin House Blues which loads of artists have sung, but we love the Nina Simone version.”

Daisy, Delilah and DeeDee are looking for a wingman, the kind of person who will help you approach potential partners in public. The ladies are determined to wrest the meaning away from the Top Gun world of masculinity and apply them to the contemporary woman.

Known for their interpretations of indie-pop hits, the 100+ strong Menagerie Choir are celebrating the iconic music of cult cinema classics at Fringe World. Narrated by local film buff, Magnolia’s Tristan Fidler will navigate the choir through a selection of legendary cinema tunes from directors such as Quentin Tarantino, the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson.

The show takes audiences on a night out, loaded with pick-up lines, daggy dancing and launching that allimportant first move.

Menagerie’s Fringe World show promises an unforgettable mix of happiness, sorrow, love, armoured tanks, jaguar sharks and the unexpected.

A hilarious look at the insanity of the modern dating game, and the gender stereotypes embedded within it.

inside out

It’s a statement that was repeated in media interviews throughout the day. It’s a nice pro-democracy sentiment, but it is unlikely the party are not going to preference anybody at all. With the state election just over a month away, there’s surprisingly little detail about what each party has to offer LGBTI Western Australians on March 11th. We know where each of the major parties stand in relation to the Safe Schools Coalition program. The Liberals will not support the program, Labor will fully fund it. Labor will apologise for, and remove historical convictions for gay crimes. Premier Colin Barnett has said he is supportive of a making a similar move, and has asked Attorney General Michael Mischin to prepare a submission for cabinet. Finally the major parties are on the same page with access to PrEP treatment. Aged care policies are also of growing interest to older members of our community. Homelessness, domestic violence prevention and reducing transgender workplace discrimination is also on the radar. The resurgence of a reinvigorated One Nation party could also be of concern for the LGBTI community. Their candidates in the Queensland state election have voiced anti-LGBTI positions several times. Some have been dropped by the party; others have been retained. Pauline Hanson, the party’s national leader, jetted into Perth last month and revealed an almost full complement of candidates, all ready to run. I listened to what Hanson had to say when she made her announcement on the steps of the State Parliament. She wouldn’t be drawn on where the party would send their preferences. Hanson thought it would be better if people voted ‘below the line’ and selected them themselves.

MATThew MITCHAM PG6

Hanson avoided the issue. With a recent poll showing One Nation could hold the balance of power, who they align themselves with is a serious consideration. Neither would Hanson discuss policy issues. She argued that it was up to the Western Australian candidates to develop policy, after all she isn’t running in WA, doesn’t live here, and admits she’s not on top of grassroots issues. The One Nation candidates were revealed. They posed in front of Parliament House for photos, but it would be a few days before the party released their names and which seats they were running for, nevermind what their policies will be. Hanson stayed in WA and spent several days touring shopping centres and posing for hundreds of selfies.

COURTNEY ACT PG7

The most disturbing part though - people declaring that they were all ready to vote for Hanson and her newly named candidates. Even though we’re not sure who they are, what they stand for, or what they’d bring to the running of the state. Has politics just become like a reality TV show where we vote in the housemate with the biggest personality, or is about serious ideas and making a positive improvement to people’s lives? Over the next five weeks we’ll try to cover as many issues relevant to the LGBT community as possible. Got something you want to know more about? Drop us a note and we’ll endeavour to find out where every party stands. Maybe the devil is not in the detail, maybe the devil is when there is no detail.

Ol’ Blue Eyes, they called him. The quintessential crooner, Frank Sinatra, is known for his musical talent, smooth attitude and media scandals - but have you ever heard of Hank Finatra? Perth expatriate and entertainer Jens Radda becomes Finatra in his Fringe World cabaret, Frankly Hank - a parody of Sinatra that explores the ‘50s “glamour and elegant bigotry we all know and love.” OUTinPerth caught up with Radda to find out more about Mr Sin… er, Finatra.

explores the glamorous sides of bigotry which was so present in this era and how a charming smile can so easily sell any story. There are many parallels between that world and the one we currently live in and it couldn’t be more relevant.

want to write a show around him? Frank Sinatra is an interesting character in both the music world and the political. He has made his audiences feel in touch with jazz and romance while at the same time stirring conflict in the media. It was while reading a biography about his life and career that lit the flame which inspired this show. It was both his life story as well as his music where I discovered many exciting facts and beliefs that I thought would make the good basis for a cabaret.

Matthew Mitcham is heading back to Perth with his new cabaret show Under the Covers. The Olympic gold medalist dived into his cabaret career at Fringe World a few years ago with Twists and Turns, a personal show that was based on his autobiography of the same name. The show was incredibly popular with Perth audiences and returned for two more seasons.

my case disgracefully – which makes a much better story.”

Now Mitcham is back, with sidekick Spanky in tow, in an all new show.

“There are ways to perceive absolutely every experience you have, you can experience it as a negative or as a positive.”

The inspiration for the new show came from a period of transition in Mitcham’s life when he began to work out what his life would be about after his retirement from competitive sport. “It got it’s inspiration from my experiences over the last year I guess, transitioning from being an Olympian to my life after sport, I guess transition can be a fairly universal thing.” Mitcham said he was ill-prepared for life after sport and found himself with lots of unexpected spare time. “It’s about the challenge of transitioning and the choices that we make to handle that transition gracefully,” Mitcham said, “or in

“I spent a devastating amount of time in bed under the covers with a self-help book in one hand and a jar of peanut butter in the other.” Mitcham shared. Developing a positive mindset is something that Mitcham said helped him through the period of great change.

Moving into the entertainment realm has taught Mitcham to be less of a perfectionist and a control frea he said, admitting the best moments of the show are often improvised. “I’ve learned to embrace a little bit of that unpredictability and that spontaneity, but I did struggle a bit with writing the show, just because I guess I struggle with that perfectionism. That perfection, it kind of paralyses you.” Under the Covers is at the Perth Town Hall from February 13th. Tickets are available from Fringe World.

expect? Everyone knows Sinatra’s music but it’s never been seen in this light. The character of Hank Finatra oozes charm, wit and debonair - as well as bigotry in spades. It’s not a show that treads lightly on any subject. If you’ve come expecting a Frank Sinatra tribute, this isn’t the show for you. But if you want to see an edgy, modern and extremely funny cabaret then Frankly Hank will certainly tick your criteria.

From Australian Idol to RuPaul’s Drag Race, Courtney Act has been representing Australia on the international drag and entertainment scene as one of our top exports. Making a name for herself as a bi-coastal queen, Act has emerged as not only a great musical talent but as a queen with a message - heading to heated Trump-centric events across the United States to better understand those who support the divisive new leader of the free world. Calling from Los Angeles, Act tells me she’s happy to be doing everyday things like decorating her house as a reprieve from infiltrating Republican rallies and even the inauguration of newly-elected President Trump. “I was genuinely afraid. I went to a Trump rally earlier last year and both times I had a bodyguard with me. I had a marine with me at the inauguration who was 6’ 5” and ready to do what had to be done. I think having him standing there looking intimidating is probably doing 75% of the job anyway. I didn’t have any trouble but I think that’s because no-one was gonna fuck with him.” The Aussie expatriate says while she seems composed in the YouTube videos in which she visits Trump rallies, she was scared enough to write a will on the plane to the inauguration. “I left all of my human hair wigs to Vanity and gave Willam second choice. I really thought Trump’s election would give everyone a mandate to hate, and in some respects it has, but there were a lot of protestors there. I would say about 70% of the people I came into contact with outside of the inauguration were protestors - even when I ventured to the line to get comment from Trump supporters I still found protestors waiting to get inside.” While there were an inordinate amount of anti-Trump protestors at the events, Act says she was surprised to find queer youth showing up at the events. “There was a girl and a gay shouting ‘Courtney! Courtney!’ and I thought I’d been sprung. They were wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats and my heart broke but when I asked what they were doing at the event they said they were just wearing the hats so they didn’t get singled out.”

“The shows was originally written for American audiences because their understanding of Australia begins at Crocodile Dundee and ends at Steve Irwin. I just wanted to do my bit as the cultural attache to Australia and educate Americans on the wonders of our country.” Act says she was tired of having to point out to her friends that the pop hit they were listening to on the radio was Australian made. “People are shocked to learn that Air Supply, ACDC, The Divinyls… even Olivia Newton-John and Kylie Minogue are Australian performers. Americans had no idea! I felt it was my duty to educate them and tell them Fosters is absolutely not Australian for beer and hasn’t been for about 30 years.” The Girl from Oz is filled with a selection of songs, quotes and iconic film moments Americans know and love, that Act intended to assert Australian ownership of. “If you watch a Hollywood movie these days, you’ll notice some of America’s greatest actors are Australian. Listing all of their names on a screen makes you realise just how prevalent we are in Hollywood and American culture.” Celebrate Australia with Courtney Act in The Girl from Oz, from Wednesday Feb 15th - Sunday Feb 19th. Tickets and more information available from fringeworld.com.au Leigh Hill

Moving away from politics, Act tells us that The Wizard of Oz imagery that accompanies her Fringe World show is a ruse - The Girl from Oz is all about her Australian roots and translating for US audiences.

The cabaret circus phenomenon Briefs is back for Fringe World, the show has become a favourite of Perth’s residents. While the show travels all over the world the cast always loves coming to WA because they say we’re the best audiences. We caught up with the outrageous Fez Faanana, the troupe’s Creative Director who appears in the show as his alter-ego Shivannah, who is quite possibly the world’s most glamorous bogan drag queen. Your show just finished in Sydney season two days ago, and already you’re here performing in Perth! We left Sydney at seven o’clock in the morning and flew straight to Perth. It feels like home here though, because we’ve had the same accommodation for the last four years. It’s cute, even the landlord knows who we are now! He even leaves a loaf of bread, butter and Vegemite in everyone’s apartment. We love coming back to Perth, the festival is growing at a stupid rate and the sites are looking more and more magnificent - especially the Pleasure Garden!

Fringe World stretches all the way to Midland, Albany and Geraldton now.

We’ve been told you have a splash zone this year what’s going on?

It will be interesting to see how much the festival can grow. I hear great things about Midlandia from relatives and friends. That’s the beauty of fringe festivals, it’s about being inclusive. The more the festival spreads the more artists can come and experience different parts of Australia and more of Australia gets to see interesting art. It used to be a luxury and now it seems to be a ritual.

You may remember we had a slightly different lineup last year, Captain Kidd was injured so we didn’t have his splash zone but he’s back now. I should mention this show has been in our repertoire for a while now - we’re not putting it down but it’s going to have a little nap for a while. This is the last time we’ll be performing this show for a long time, we’re not even doing it at Adelaide Fringe, so we brought Captain Kidd back as well as new performer James Welsby (Valerie Hex) to farewell the show.

You guys are one of the groups that have been here from the beginning so you must have been able to see that growth? That can be what’s most daunting about fringe festivals as well. While we’re a big show, we’re not a big organisation. We’re still an independent small company so the larger shows make us a bit nervous but we got stopped in the street while we were out getting fish and chips the other day which made me realise we’ve got a really awesome connection with this city. Those are the kind of things that help small collectives like ours grow and develop!

Don’t miss your last chance to see Briefs at Fringe World from Wednesday Feb 8th - Tuesday Feb 14th. Tickets and more info available from fringeworld. com.au Graeme Watson

news

There will be a new push for within the federal Liberal party to address the issue of marriage equality. Fairfax Media reported that Dean Smith, Warren Entsch, Tim Wilson, Trent Zimmerman, Trevor Evans and Melissa Price are among those advocating for the government to formally dump the plebiscite policy. Marriage equality activists have welcomed the move. Long term advocate Rodney Croome said a free vote was consistent with the Liberal party’s core philosophies. “A free vote is consistent with the Liberal Party’s core principle of individual freedom and we urge Liberal members to uphold this principle regardless of what they think about marriage equality,” he said. A report from the senate inquiry into the government’s marriage bill is due at the end of February.

Western Australians will gain access to PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) through a trial being coordinated by the WA AIDS Council and M Clinic. Health Minister John Day signed off on a trial that will include 2000 participants and will commence operating in the second half of 2017. The trial will be a partnership between the Health Department, The Kirby Institute and the WA AIDS Council, who will lead the project. Funding of $1.3 million will be provided for the trial, which will be run over a two-year period. PrEP is a preventative treatment that has proven to be extremely effective in preventing HIV transmission. A once-a-day pill is taken by people who do not have the virus. Andrew Burry, the Chief Executive Officer of the WA AIDS Council said the approval had been “a long time in the making” and marked an exciting time in the organisations long commitment to tackling new infections of HIV. “It’s become a cliché, but PrEP really is a game changer and this trial will allow us to get as many people as possible on to PrEP as quickly as possible.” “PrEP allows us to make a genuine difference in trying to end HIV and stop any new infections”. The trial will target gay men, and men who have sex with men, but will not be limited to these populations. Other people who would benefit from access to the preventative treatment will also be able to apply to the trial program, including people in regional or remote areas. The WA AIDS Council said details of how people can register to be part of the trial will be announced in due course, but people who have previously taken the medication would also be eligible for the program. From a per-capita population perspective the trial will be the largest conducted in Australia. Similar trials have been run in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Currently around one hundred new infections of HIV are diagnosed in Western Australia each year. Cipri Martinez, President of the National Association of People With HIV Australia (NAPWHA) welcomed the long-awaited announcement. “This means WA is now in the race along with NSW, VIC,QLD and SA to be the first in Australia, and possibly the world, to virtually end HIV transmissions. Our communities globally would celebrate such a historic health prevention achievement.” Martinez said. Ryan Oliver, NAPWHA’s Western Australian representative, who has previously criticised the time taken to set up a WA trial, said it was good to see the inclusive parameters of the study and the number of places available; “We may be the last cab off the rank but we are a maxi cab”. Graeme Watson

Two Western Australian candidates for One Nation have been criticised over their comments about the LGBT people and marriage equality. In an article published in Quadrant in 2015 the party’s Pilbara candidate David Archibald described homosexuality as “an acceptable loss, on evolutionary terms” and said that only a “degenerate culture” would allow people of the same sex to marry. Archibald, who is challenging The Nationals leader Brendan Grylls for the electorate in the state’s North West, was already causing controversy with comments he had previously published about never married single mothers being too ugly or lazy to attract a mate. In the opinion piece Archibald claimed that allowing couples who are not focused on procreating to marry would lead to the institution of marriage being devalued and an increasing number of divorces and abandoned children. “That can only lead to a bitter harvest of broken marriages and abandoned children if the notion of marriage is cheapened and lessened and broadened by including people who are not entering into the state of married bliss in order to produce offspring.” Archibald wrote. “It is not about a pair of homosexuals being able to look gooey-eyed at each other, it is about undermining civilisation and making our culture more like African-American culture with its 70% illegitimacy rate.” Southern River candidate Michelle Meyers has allegedly described homosexual people as having a “broken, degenerate and unproductive way of life.” A Facebook page under Meyers’ name and bearing her photographs contains a post that said “2 percent homosexual community needs to get straightened out… rather than distorting reality for the 98% heterosexual population.” “Better to spend money on helping them to heal than to spend millions on endorsing and propping up this broken community while forcing others to celebrate their broken state.” the post stated. One Nation was approached for comment.

LEBANON MOVES CLOSER TO DECRIMINALISATION LEBANON

Political leader Jeremy Corbyn has been criticised by the LGBT community after he appeared to suggest people to choose to be gay or lesbian. Launching LGBT History month, Corbyn said people should not be criminalised, brutalised and murdered simply because they chose to be gay or lesbian. The comments were questioned almost immediately and Corbyn quickly clarified his speech saying he meant people made a choice about how they live their lives.

A judge in Lebanon has ruled that homosexuality should not be considered a criminal offence, the decision may trigger a change to the nation’s laws. Judge Rabih Maalouf ruled that homosexulaity was a personal choice and as it caused no harm it should not be considered an offence. The judge referenced an article of the countries laws that states; “An act undertaken in exercise of a right without abuse shall not be regarded as an offence.” Currently homosexuality can attract a one-year prison term.

IVORY COAST JAIL TWO MEN EVEN THOUGH HOMOSEXUALITY IS LEGAL IVORY COAST

Kjell Frølich Benjaminsen and Erik Skjelnæs became the first same-sex couple to wed with the approval of Norway’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. On February 1st a new liturgy came into effect within the church allowing same-sex weddings for the first time. The couple have lived together for over 36 years, longer than their officiating pastor has been alive. Same-sex civil marriages have been accessible in Norway since 2009. Keenan says that it felt incredibly wonderful to see their truth printed on the official document.

Officials in the African nation of Ivory Coast are refusing to explain why two men have been jailed under a little used “public indecency” law. Yann, 31 and friend 19 year-old Abdul were arrested in October. Homosexuality is legal in Ivory Coast. The two men, who are openly gay, say they are just friends. Graeme Reid at Human Rights Watch, said the use of a vague law, arbitrary arrests and an unexplained conviction was completely contrary to the rule of law.

INDONESIAN MEDIA BIASED AGAINST LGBT PEOPLE INDONESIA A report put together by a conglomeration of non-government organisations has highlighted the bias Indonesian media have towards LGBT people. The study compared seven Indonesian national publications between January to February 2016. Two hundred news and editorial pieces were deemed biased against the LGBT community, while only around 60 news items tried to educate the public on various sexual orientations and protect the rights of sexual and gender minorities.

In issue 185 of OUTinPerth that was published in December 2016, an article in our community focus section that featured Mr Jack Garber was open to interpretation. We would like to clarify the following. Mr Garber is not currently a lawyer in Western Australia. He is a former US lawyer, and recently completed the education requirements for a Western Australia practicing certificate, he is not however a lawyer at this time.

how you will achieve that has become more complicated but these things are always going to take work, and this may just be a bit more work that expected.” Though she may be elevated to the respected status of a successful community leader, Bliss reminds us that she has been to many low places as indicated in the show’s title. “I’ve been to all the low places. I am a 40-something-year-old guy who spends his nights crawling around nightclubs and does all the things I shouldn’t have done in my twenties and surviving all of that. Nobody knows the dirt on the floor of low places like I do.” Get low with Panti Bliss’ show, High Heels in Low Places, playing at the Astor Theatre on Thursday Feb 23rd. Tickets and more information available from astortheatreperth.com

Secondly, the article previously stated Mr Garber had been the President of two Parents and Citizen’s Associations of Western Australian schools. This was incorrect. Mr Garber is the Chairman of two independent schools, a primary school and a secondary school. While he is also involved in the P&C groups, he has not held the position of President. OUTinPerth offers a sincere apology to Mr Garber for the lack of accuracy.

Have you eve felt naughty? Have you ever sinned? If your answer is yes then BarbieQ and the team at Kinetica have just the show for you. These award-nominated artists swing back into Fringe World with a sequel to last year’s salacious show, Sinsuality, with Sinsuality 2: Back In Bed. The troupe tantalise their audiences with sexual fetish, burlesque, drag, pole dancing, circus and more - exploring the seven deadly sins with their unbelievable talents. We caught up with the ever-fabulous ringmistress, BarbieQ, to find out how they team are going to top themselves this year.

There are so many incredible shows! Obviously Interplay will be high on my priority list as I always love Kinetica’s work. I saw Limbo for the first time ever and It blew my mind! By A Thread and Barbu were also absolutely outstanding! Due to scheduling conflicts I won’t get to see DIVAS: All Male Revue which breaks my heart but we are on at the same time! I wish everyone a safe and happy Fringe World and I hope to see you all out and about! Don’t forget - Sinning is not always a bad thing! Sinsuality 2: Back in Bed will be in the De Parel Spiegeltent from Monday February 13th - Saturday Feb 18th. Tickets and more info available from fringeworld.com.au

Congratulations on your nomination for Best Cabaret last year - how does Back In Bed build on last year’s show? Thank you, I was so happy to be nominated at The Proud Awards! Back In Bed sees us give each sin a new twist with new acts and interpretations. I always ask the cast which sin they would like the opportunity the tackle and then we go from there. Have there been any changes to the line-up this time around? The cast lineup is the same as last year minus our actor Fletch that joined us for the Pride sin last time around. The sins have been reallocated and a few favourite numbers from last year’s show have been kept as the crowd really reacted to them in a way that made us not want to part with them. (Be prepared for the SPLASH ZONE!) We all know Barbie, of course - tell us about the talents of your performers at Kinetica. The cast are so incredible! They all make my heart smile and we have become an incredible family! Sarah and Rebecca are the owners and directors of Kinetica and are responsible for teaching all of us our circus tricks. Their skill level constantly blows my mind and they inspire me to work harder all the time. Matt and Sam are also from Kinetica and wowed our crowds last year with their duo hand balance and trapeze, their acts differ this year but guarantee to be equally as sexy and exciting. Sugar Du Joure from Lady Velvet Cabaret and reigning winner of Miss Burlesque WA and also runner up in Miss Burlesque Australia is back with us again. She is the definition of glamour and beauty and she is taking on a sin this year that will certainly raise a few... muscles in the audience! Ruby from Bobbi’s Pole Studio will be swinging and whirling and twirling and oozing her sex appeal like she did last year. Ruby truly makes me question elements of my sexuality! There are a number of sensual, sexy shows at Fringe World this year - how do you stand out from the crowd? Sinsuality stands out from other shows from having all completely local artists, a group of people that I believe are some of the leaders in their chosen fields and cast specifically to their proven excellence! The show continues your exploration of the 7 Deadly Sins - which of those sins is Barbie’s greatest weakness? Ooh, that’s a tough one... no not really! Lust is my weakness, ask my boyfriend, I can’t keep my hands off of him and that will certainly once again be demonstrated this year in Sinsuality. Where else can we catch Barbie and the Kinetica team this Fringe World? Kinetica have a show from February 3rd til the 8th called Interplay in the Big Top in the Pleasure Garden which is going to be phenomenal. I will be there most nights supporting them and doing promo for Sinsuality so everyone come down and say hi! What other shows are you loving this Fringe World?

culture Celebrity impersonation is a talent of many a drag performer. From Chad Michaels to Charlie Hides, queens across the world have made their mark on the community by capturing the essence of our favourite divas. Feminem has rounded up a selection of Perth’s best to showcase the incredible talent we have right here in Western Australia. Local performers Veronica Jean Jones, Katya Kokov, Amanda Love, Delvira Midnight and Ruby Jewelz will be taken over by every diva from Adele to Liza-with-a-Z in DIVAS - All Male Revue. We caught up with Fem to find out what being a diva is all about. What makes a diva? A diva is ultimate show biz icon... or as Beyonce would say “a female version of a hustler” One of the entertainers you’re going to be impersonating is Dame Edna – what’s the hardest bit of portraying the purple-coiffed lady? The hardest thing with Edna is her voice. Its very distinct and instantly recognisable, so making sure that it is as authentic as possible is very important. How’s your Fringe World show different from a regular show in a gay club? DIVAS - All Male Revue is a full scale production that runs for 75 minutes. We have 12 characters in total and over 20 costume changes. Most night club shows are about 15 minutes and you’ll normally see three costume changes. DIVAS is bigger in every sense of the word. Who else is in DIVAS - All Male Revue? As well as some of the iconic divas seen on the poster (Kylie, Cher, Tina, etc) we will also be featuring a few of the current up and coming divas like Adele, Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor. Do you fight over who is going to be each diva? Does everyone want to be Liza? Matching characters to performers was actually very easy. We look at height, body shape, skin colour and work out who has the closest match to the divas. Makeup and costume also play a huge part in making sure our impersonations are as close to the real thing as possible.

Heading to perform in The Shambles, the comic will bring a new selection of half-baked jokes to try out on fringe audiences in order to build a full-length comedy show. While this may seem like a cop-out, seeing how jokes develop and grow is half the fun of a work in progress show - giving audiences a peep into the processes of the funny man. Not only can you expect comedy from Nicholson, but he has become enamoured with the art of the lip-sync. Speaking with OUTinPerth last year, Rhys says alcohol is to blame. “It’s this dumb thing… I was on Melbourne Roadshow and my friend Bridget had been planning to do these lip-sync battles and I do these lip-sync things on Instagram and we were just drunk. A lot of my stories start with, “I was just drunk.” Whether drunk or not, Nicholson says he loves that Perth crowds are always willing to try new things.

Adam Peter Scott’s Trivia Death Match is a must see! I am also super excited to see Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo in A Night At The Musicals.

“You Perth people are so nice! You come to things! That’s not gonna happen anywhere else, it’s insane.”

Catch DIVAS - All Male Revue at Connections Nightclub on Wed 15th, Fri 17th and Sat 18th February, 8pm. Tickets and more information available from fringeworld.com.au

Last year, OUTinPerth gave Nicholson a 5-star review for his work in progress show. Reviewer Leigh Hill described the show as “beautifully irreverent, speaking candidly about gay sex, drug use and mental health.”

film

Our past lives within us. Our life experiences not only form our identities but inform us which identity is best to present to others. The shadows left by society’s construction and labelling of difference as deviance are still with us, and three films this month tell personal stories of those marginalised by what Michael Foucault denounces as ‘assumed reason’. In Barry Jenkin’s film Moonlight, the main character is marginalised on three counts. Chiron is poor, black and gay. We see him at three ages as he struggles to find his place in the world. At nine years of age, he is known as Little (Alex Hibbert). He is bullied by other children who have identified his as ‘different’ and called names he doesn’t know the meaning of. Little’s only friend tries to help him not to be ‘so soft’. With his mother Paula (Naomie Harris) becoming more addicted to drugs, 16 year-old Chiron (Ashton Sanders) is a gangly youth who tries not to be noticed. His mother’s drug supplier becomes a substitute father. Juan (Mahershala Ali) tells Chiron that at some point he has to make up his mind who he wants to be. But Chiron knows he wants to ‘do a lotta things that don’t make sense’. By the time we see him as the young adult Black (Trevante Rhodes), he has perfected his tough exterior but when he meets up with his childhood friend Kevin (Andre Holland), all the feelings he has worked hard to suppress come rushing back. The struggle he has put into suppressing his sexuality has no impact on who he really is.

Many voters have expressed their disdain for the current state of politics. We have seen a rise in minor party voters across the nation as Australians increasingly turn their backs on the old parties, accusing them of not listening or existing in disarray. Flux is a new political party that hopes to change the way we do politics in 2017. The party gives constituents of the area control of what their representative says within parliament, enabling them to express their views directly in the parliamentary process to be acted upon by their MLA or MLC using an app. Flux’s state candidate for the lower house seat of Perth, Ben Ballingall, sat down with OUTinPerth to explain their vision for contemporary politics and how they will deal with social issues that affect the LGBTIQ+ community. Flux puts power over MPs in the hands of voters - how do you reconcile voting against strongly held personal beliefs? “My personal beliefs lay with the party first and foremost. I think the system that we use is far more important than any of my personal beliefs. While I still reserve the right to expound them myself, if they are different to what the membership votes in favour of I will put the movement before my personal position.”

The audience is so close to the main character that they are absorbed into the three stages of Chiron’s life. It is deeply affecting as the audience feels the heartbreaking struggle Chiron goes through to alienate his very core. In the terrifying thriller Split, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, James McAvoy’s character is spoilt for choice. Kevin embodies several characters including 9 year-old Hedwig, nice guy Benny, somewhat controlling Patricia and scheming bad guy Dennis. Living with dissociative identity disorder (formally known as multiple personality disorder), Kevin kidnaps three teenage girls. As the more evil personalities gain control, some of the alter egos reach out to their therapist Dr Karen Buckley (Betty Buckley). McAvoy is absolutely mesmerising as he morphs into different personalities that inhabit the troubled Kevin. His accent, posture, facial expression and even a change in physicality give credence to the several levels of Kevin’s survival. Interestingly, childhood abuse is pivotal in forming more than one of the characters in this film.

It is such a great pity that Shyamalan had no idea how to conclude the gripping narrative and it just slides off into ridiculousness. Although the Hollywood horror film has been criticised for trivialising complex mental illness and depicting people living with dissociative identity disorder as violent villains, Split is an interesting film at many levels. Like Crazy, directed by Paolo Virzì, is an Italian film set in Tuscany. The extroverted Beatrice (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) teams up with fragile introvert Donatella (Micaela Ramazzotti) to escape from a psychiatric hospital. Their rocky road trip reveals the reasons that the women have been institutionalised. This bitter-sweet comedy drama continually reminds the audience of Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise. Amongst the laughs runs a disturbing thread about social conditions that push people to the edge and the treatments that are used for damaged people who are labelled crazy. Like Crazy is a PIAF film which screens 6-12 Feb at Somerville and 14-19 Feb at Joondalup Pines. Lezly Herbert

Does the party have a stance on any social issues, such as marriage equality? “As members of parliament we will go with the way the membership votes, always. Even if it goes against what I personally believe in, we will stick with the democratic system we have in place.” What is it about the current state of politics that Flux is trying to resolve? “There is systemic corruption and a lack of listening to what voters want. With the current system, we change members once every four years and have to hope they will stay true to the values they represented in their campaign. With a Flux system, you will have an eye on your members essentially every day, and be able to have your say whenever suits you to ensure they are doing what you voted for them to do. How do you stop people from ‘hijacking’ or stacking a vote using the Flux system? “Well, essentially that is democracy. The majority of the group. There are of course systems in place that ensure it is always one person one vote and by spreading out the democratic process we hope lobbies and big money will be replaced by knowledge and information in swaying an individual’s vote.”

Do you think there is a place for parties that form around one or few issues that are important to them, such as One Nation? “I’d like to say no with Flux around. Flux allows for voters who are concerned about a particular field of politics to focus themselves in that area. It won’t be necessary to stand for parliament or form a party around a specialised issue using a direct democracy based system.” In what way can people focus their votes? Flux differs from a typical direct democracy in that you are not expected to vote on every single issue. If you don’t care or are not interested in that certain issue, you may abstain - our system also allows constituents to direct their political capital where they want it to be. You will be able to pass your vote on to a representative or someone you trust to handle, and you will be able to take that back and change your mind if you find you disagree. The WA State Election will be held on Saturday March 11. For more information, head to elections.wa.gov.au Leigh Hill

Open Plan Coffee Co Back by popular demand, the award winning performance FAG/STAG will be returning to Fringe World to ask the question, “How can you be a best mate when you’re stuck being your worst self?” As Jimmy’s love life comes to a halt and Corgan’s wedding approaches the horizon, two best friends hide in Grindr, Tinder, parties and video games. From the minds of writer/performers Jeffrey Jay Fowler and Chris Isaacs, FAG/STAG tells two simultaneous stories from conflicting perspectives. The pair have gathered a slew of awards from Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide fringe festivals with this humorous and honest insight into the mind of the modern Australian man. Don’t miss FAG/STAG at Perth Town Hall from Wednesday Feb 8th - Saturday Feb 11th. Tickets and more info available from fringeworld.com.au

Dolly Diamond is back in town with all new tales of life, love and lascivious behaviour with her new Fringe World show, The Lady is a Tramp. The cabaret diva will take you on a romp through a selection of her favourite well-known songs with the Diamond twist that makes it her own (and makes fun of others while she’s at it.)

Open Plan Coffee Co is a new cafe in North Perth. It’s got a stunning open plan layout and very friendly staff. We sampled their delicious toasted sandwiches and we read newspapers and magazines. There a great place for breakfast or lunch. We couldn’t help notice the soft boiled egg, soldiers and dukkah on the menu - we’ll be going back for that. North Perth Coffee Co is at 408 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth.

Recently appointed the Artistic Director of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Diamond knows how to put on a show. The award-winner performer has taken her talents all across Australia and is ready to dominate Fringe World once again. Diamond’s life of glitz, glamour and guts is guaranteed to give you a laugh or two with an evening of lewd shenanigans. Dolly Diamond: The Lady is a Tramp will be Downstairs at the Maj from Tuesday Feb 7th - Saturday Feb 11th. Tickets and info available from fringeworld.com.au Rice Baby

This new Asian restaurant has moved into the space that was home to the much loved Oriel Cafe many years ago. The space has got some stunning decor and the food is great. We had the Bang Bang Chicken - which will surely become their signature dish, salted fish fried rice, stir fried asian greens and some delectable dumplings. Yummo. Rice Baby is at 483 Hay Street, Subiaco

Married superduo Kitten N Lou are getting biblical this year with their new show Holier Than Thou at Fringe World.

What happens when you grow up in a Mexican restaurant in the middle of Australia with big dreams of moving to Hollywood?

A glitter bomb of a show, the pair dance, striptease and make magic as they take you through the Old Testament and beyond.

Local performer Zac Gower tells the story of how a guy with a love for burritos and cameos in his one man show Tel LA Novela.

Kitten N Lou ask the hard questions; What is the meaning of our existence in the universe? Why can’t Adam and Eve have more fabulous outfits? How can homosexuality be a sin when the Bible is clearly so gay?

Gower “makes it to LA” with all the scandal, drama and romance of a telenovela with a bilingual pop soundtrack that could be described as Enrique Iglesias meets Jimmy Barnes.

Recently voted #1 Burlesque Duo in the World by 21st Century Burlesque, the couple worked with RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon to bring you their signature brand of highly choreographed comedic camp extravaganzas.

Gower returns from Los Angeles with tales of drama and reworks of Aussie classics from icons such as Men At Work, Cold Chisel and John Farnham with his own unique blend of Spanglish.

Kitten N Lou: Holier Than Thou will be at the Perth Cultural Centre’s Circus Theatre from Monday Feb 13th - Sunday Feb 19th. Tickets and more info available from fringeworld.com.au

Wales’ reigning queens of rock ballads and blues, Bonnie Tyler, is heading to Australia to perform all of her greatest hits. Having released 16 studio albums, two live albums, four EPs, 83 singles and a handful of compilations, Tyler has no plans to stop until the end of the night. She’s even represented Great Britain at Eurovision, although she came 19th in the 2013 final. Tyler will be supported in Perth by a band who originally hailed from Perth, Eurogliders! Everything is Forgotten

The Flying Microtonal Banana

Methyl Ethel release the eerily reminiscent and nostalgic indie pop/rock album Everything is Forgotten, which will leave you doing anything but forgetting. The grooves and sounds leave you remembering that great summer road trip, a breakup you are now fondly looking back on or that moment you entered existential awareness. Whatever the moment, the music transports you to a state of calm and eclectic peace of mind giving you a soundtrack that resolves life’s worries into a blip in the passage of time.

King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard have unleashed their creativity in Flying Microtonal Banana with microtonal intervals and created a very trance-inducing record that is different from Nonagon Infinity, an album laden with space and psychedelic rock with a touch of southern Asian instrumentals. It did not fail to impress with Rattlesnake, which has a very hypnotic heavy guitar riffs and a song called Open Water. This album is an instant favourite for its accessibility and the band’s willingness to experiment and push boundaries with their music.

Spoon Hot Thoughts Hot Thoughts is an interesting departure for Spoon away from their more indie sound to an intoxicating electronic medley. It’s so addictive, I couldn’t help but play the CD all over again after listening to it for the first time. Each song on the album takes you on a roller coaster of emotions from the moment you hit play. From joyful exuberance to melancholy, Spoon knows how to touch a soul with their music.

Gautami Sithambaram Sasha Scene Delete (Late Night Tales)

Doublethink Prism Tetras Tetras Local outfit Doublethink Tetras have released their album via Bandcamp. It’s an intriguing mix of spoken word, electronica, and at times; throbbing guitar rock. Opening track Face the Music is a difficult listen, but things get more palatable with A Poetry Reading and Origami, as the record moves into more of a trip-hop sound. A cover of Do-Re-Mi, complete with Julie Andrews sample is a disturbing but beautiful mess and the track Russell Brand Awareness get’s a mention just for it’s title.

Sasha is one of the most successful DJs on the planet, back in 2002 when he released his debut album Airdrawndagger many were surprised that it was a remarkably different sound to his remixes, a subtle electronic soundscape. Now 14 years later, here’s his second record, a work filled with modern classical influences. Its 21 tracks long and quite a passive listening experience as it tends to quickly drift off into the background, but driving down Tonkin Hwy at night it sounded quite impressive.

The night before I’m scheduled to chat to Ray Slijngaard from ‘90s techno pioneers 2 Unlimited, I stand in front of a wall of cassettes, scanning backwards and forth, looking for a needle in a haystack made of needles. I’ve never been one to keep my music in alphabetical order, and it’s moments like this I wish I had time for an elaborate cataloging system. Finally I find what I’m looking for, the cassingle of the duo’s breakout hit from 1992, Get Ready For This. One of the first songs to top the charts with a distinctive techno pop sound. I take out the bright yellow cassette and pull out the insert, inside is an autograph Ray signed during an in store appearance at Brash’s in the Hay Street Mall, twenty five years ago. “Peace, from 2 Unlimited” the message reads. I snap a picture with my phone and tag Ray’s Instagram account. Due the time differences between Perth and Dusseldorf in Germany, where the Dutch rapper is now based, our interview takes place very early in the morning. As we begin chatting Ray laughs about the blast the from past, “Yeah, man that was funny, ” Ray chuckled, “I saw Anita’s autograph on the front and then mine inside and what I wrote… 25 years ago, can you imagine!” A quarter of a century ago the rappers life was changed when two producers asked him to write an rap for an instrumental tune they’d created that was getting a lot of love in the clubs. “I never thought it would be such a big hit. I was a cook! I got this invitation from a Belgian producer and he said ‘I’ve got this demo and would you like to write a rap on it?’ While I was writing the rap I also wrote a girl part.” When Ray returned the track to the producers he’d added his part and some female vocals from Anita Doth. Within a few weeks the track was zooming up the charts around the world and 2 Unlimited’s career was launched. “Within a couple of weeks it was number 2 in the UK charts, so I quit my job and then soon after we released Twilight Zone and then we were off around the world, and it was a roller coaster.” Ray said. The band scored hit after hit, following up their first two releases with The Magic Friend and Workaholic. In 1993 the band released No Limits off their second album, and it became their biggest selling single. Ray said that was the moment the band felt like they were in the big leagues. “Suddenly you’re flying business class, you’ve got security and twelve people traveling with you - it’s such a great feeling.” Ray recounted. “I always wanted to be an artist, but I used to say to myself “That’s not going to happen, go back to the kitchen and dream on.’” Ray said he’s amazed that after 25 years Get Ready for This is still a reguarly played tune often appearing at NBA games and popping up in many movies soundtracks. 2 Unlimited had a rare run of success with 15 tunes in a row topping the charts, and the band enjoyed success around the globe. 2 Unlimited are still playing regularly, Ray said there’s nothing quite like 20,000 people joining in the chorus of No Limits. Last year singer Anita Doth decided that the touring schedule was too hectic for her family commitments, so Ray has recruited a new singer Kim Vergouwen to handle the vocals. Ray said the first shows featuring the lineup have been sensational fun and the duo can’t wait to bring their live show to Australia. 2 Unlimited will be performing alongside Technotronic, Real McCoy and Dr Alban at Mega 90s. The Australia wide tours kicks off at Metro City in Perth on Friday 17 March. Tickets are available from www.metropolistouring.com Graeme Watson
