The CD related to the project has shot to number one and later this year a massive show will arrive in Perth. We chatted to Lisa McCune who has signed up for a role in the epic project.
To celebrate the centenary of the ANZACs country singer Lee Kernigan has put together an epic show ‘Spirit of the ANZAC’ that is set to travel around the country and pay tribute to the ANZAC soldiers and those who followed after them.
“The story begins, Jack Thompson narrates, and takes through World War I and the 20th Century and into the 21st century and it’s a journey through music and song…” McCune explains, “It’s a piece that is theatre, it is music and song and it’s combined with the spirit of the ANZAC.” “It’s a big show about culture, our country and our heritage.” McCune said. McCune shared that ANZAC Day wasn’t a big part of her life growing up, but has become something she shares with her own family. “It was really funny, I guess Mum and Dad didn’t want to talk too much about the war when I was growing up.
I don’t remember it being talked a lot in the house. Now that my kids are growing up, we go to the dawn service every couple of years and have breakfast at the RSL and it’s a really great awesome sense of community spirit.” McCune said. The actress notes that in recent years Australians appear to have embraced ANZAC Day and recognized its importance. “There seems to have been a huge following, especially in recent years, of keeping that part of history alive, showing respect for those who have gone and respect for those who are alive.” Lisa McCune will return home to Perth for ‘Spirit of the ANZACS’ on September 18th, head to www. spiritoftheanzacs.com for all the details.
Local radio program ‘All Things Queer’ is looking for new team members to get involved in making the weekly show. Photographer John Bortolin has spent two years photographing male models around the Byron Bay area. The result of his work is an enormous coffee table book titled ‘Manscapes’. “Two years ago when I first began this journey, I could never have imagined how far it would take me, both creatively, and personally.” Bortolin said. Taking inspiration from the areas lush semi-tropical hills, hidden creeks and blue and white coast of the area Bortolin has created some engaging images of some very handsome men.
Altogether in the collection he captures 25 different men, many who had never been photographed before. “What they all had in common was a quiet knowledge of the splendor of their bodies, and a sense of pride in the hard work it takes to build and sculpt a masculine frame. There is magic in the shyness of a strong man. I didn’t want to photograph egos. I wanted to capture the beauty of their fragility.” Bortolin said. The book is available for purchase at http://manscapes.com.au/

Actor Edward Grey is playing the munchkin Boq in ‘Wicked’, the popular musical that tells the story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ from the perspective of the so-called Wicked Witch. The show’s residence in Perth will be a homecoming of sorts for Grey, who trained in Musical Theatre at WAAPA. “I haven’t been to Perth since WAAPA, so I’m really excited about coming back, and it’ll be a great way to finish the tour.” When we spoke over telephone, Grey was enjoying the Brisbane sun as part of the show’s national tour. “I’m sitting on my back veranda right now.” he said. “We’re going in the sun, catching the ferries on the river. It’s really beautiful up here.” As part of the cast of ‘Wicked’, Grey has gone to a number of interesting locations. One that was particularly memorable was Manila in the Philippines. “It was a real eye opener for me. The people were beautiful. Manila’s a crazy city, but I mean the audiences were fantastic there. They were the most amazing fans ever. Manila itself is one of those cities that you’ve got to see it to believe it. There’s so many people in such a small place.” While a lot of theatre workers find it tough to tour with the same people for months on end, Grey said he loves it. “It’s one of the best parts of the job, touring. There’s ups and downs in theatre. You get homesick sometimes or whatever but it’s pretty great.” “We had Reg Livermore in the show, in Melbourne and Sydney, I just used to love watching him from the side of the stage all the time. Just trying to be like ‘How did he do it?’ you know? You get such a privilege, as a young actor, to watch these great people over and over and it’s fresh every time.” When you’re performing eight shows a week, keeping your performance fresh is no mean feat. Luckily, Grey said the show is so fun he tends to forget he’s performed it dozens of times before. “It’s crazy with these musicals, you know. Sometimes getting to work, you’re like ‘Oh, that’s right, got to do two shows today.’ But then once it starts it kind of has an energy of its own and it just takes off and there’s no stopping it, which is really awesome.” Grey’s character, Boq, goes through a number of tribulations throughout the show. “He does have a rough trot as with many characters in the show. I mean, there’s a beautiful message at the end of the show, it’s not that, but I guess you have to make sure you’re doing the right thing in that moment without predicting what’s going to happen. Trying to listen to everyone else onstage and tell that story. It’s all about the storytelling.” Sophie Joske Image: Jeff Busby

Then one of our workers will get in touch to have a chat about what’s going on for you and invite you to one of our centres.
When you come in to a centre, someone at the front desk will ask for your name and may get you to fill in some details on an iPad, and then you are welcome to chill out in the common spaces or wait at reception until someone can see you. A worker will then invite you to have a chat about how we can help and what you would like to do – we always listen to what you want and won’t make any decisions without checking with you first. When can you access headspace? You can come into a headspace centre during usual business hours or access eheadspace anytime. When I was young I would crush the edge of my boater against the school bus window and daydream about a table. Seated around it was a more elegant version of my older self, a man and two children. I lack details beyond the vague suggestion of shape and our relationship to one another, but we enjoyed ourselves. When viewing back this immemorial moment, I have the notion I revisited the scene enough for it to singularise because it was the future I most desired at the time. As time cannonballed me forward, my imaginary family faded as other developments rose to prominence. I hurtled through a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) at age 11, and began wishing fervently for whatever constituted a “normal” mind, as I barely understood my own. Coming out as bisexual at 16, the idea that I may exist as a series of identity related tropes in the opinions of others permeated my tangled sense of self. An eccentric fence sitter, I became acutely wary of who I told about the way I functioned and identified. As an adult reflecting back, I can see I had the words to speak about these things. However, it felt easier to be quiet because I didn’t have the ability to self-advocate if I was misinterpreted. Instead, I grew an unsteady kind of patience with the misunderstandings of others when they mistook me for someone I wasn’t. Back a few years, those in the table dream were distant spectres of someone else’s life, and I made peace with lacking a desire to have children. At some juncture I saw a medical program where a girl my age proceeded through an urgently needed mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Running parallel was the story of a man with cardiac problems and a brightly coloured scarf. From this viewing an incendiary frame of mind sprung up. I could find aspects of myself in both people, but couldn’t imagine having my chest restored if there was cause to minimise it. Taciturn about my nascent sense of incongruence and always one for rigorous introspection, I began to conduct an extended inquiry into my gender identity. The sense of patience with discovery I had extrapolated from past considerations made the contemplative process seem familiar, but nonetheless disconcerting. I came out of this amorphous period as a transgender androgyne. Although assigned female at birth, I identify gender wise as aspects of female, male, and other bits. Coincidentally, I simultaneously redefined the separate area of my sexuality and settled on pansexual. The phrase “non-binary” is the umbrella term that fits my gender most, especially when I need to quickly denote my place on that conceptual straight line from female to male. I personally use the prefix “non” to indicate being not on just one side of the binary, but in and around the midst of it. While that line once fit as a representation, it was replaced with a spectrum concept as I pinned “other bits” to my definition. Presently I go with a scrunched rectangle of paper as an explanatory analogy for gender. There are straight lines from one place to another and an array of creases, dips and twists for those who inhabit other places. This still gives me a place to occupy my ambiguous middle ground, to stand proudly atop the fence that is a metaphor for much of my life, names included. I employ a masculine name, Remus, to complement my birth name, Laura. These are interchangeable, in that they denote the same person. I prefer their use to alternate, and the same works for my preferred pronouns of she, he and they. If someone declares their preference to call me one name only, I may find myself able to give this explanation. Other times I look back to the different kinds of patience I have accrued and bite my tongue, hoping to take up the mantle of self-advocacy another day. As with my
gender identity and sexuality, I prefer my names equally, with no leaning toward one option. After going through the needed psychological assessment to gain the necessary approval letter some time ago, I finally had a bilateral mastectomy last November. My medical records say I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), ending in a not quite sure question mark. I am no longer able to handle the physical issues and increased gender dysphoria, although I adore the masculinising effects of technically elevated levels of testosterone. Recently I have started moving to procure a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, or the excision of some of my reproductive organs. I feel an immense privilege to have the opportunity to transition as a non-binary individual, having initially thought I would have to lie about myself to get to where I am now. Patience is a many faceted state for me, and I am prone to frustration when encouraged to hold this precious quality but feel incapable of doing so. Despite my impatience, despite all the frustrated tears and horrible moods I have inflicted upon others and myself, I have an array of reassuring beings around me. I have supportive family, animals, friends, co-workers and medical professionals who lend me their ears and assistance. I am fortunate to work at a place where I feel safe enough and not required to explain myself all the time. The same sentiment applies to my family, and in everyday life I don’t feel obligated to always come out about my gender identity. When I want to have that conversation, I try but don’t always succeed to find a personally and generally suitable time. Defining myself has improved my ability to self-advocate, whether or not I choose to do so. Recently 25, in my bowtie collection, in my words, eccentricities, successes and failures, I feel like the elegant
version of myself I once dreamt about. When unquestionable mental tiredness overwhelms me, I have the patience to express this and come out of it intact. It is a wonderful place to be. Laura/Remus The Freedom Centre

Firstly, hats off to all my fellow young people of today. It is an ever expanding and complex world out there, and we are doing a mighty job navigating it! I have been working within the youth sector for five years, and I am constantly blown away by the resilience and determination of young people. Adolescence is a time where everything seems to happen at once, puberty, independence, friendships/relationships, and identity. So many conflicting messages, from adults and peers, and being expected to fit into both the role of a child and a young adult simultaneously and fluidly depending on the situation. Add on a few body image pressures, and the expectation of schooling and you have yourself a mix that would challenge the most self-assured people with a wealth more experience. Thinking back to my high school experience, I cannot remember if or where I saw someone who fits with the person I identify with now. Honestly I have to really strain to even recall when a solid queer representation was offered to me in the broadest context, and that is a pretty scary thought. I know for myself personally, I felt that my identity at the time was formed a lot by what I saw in the media, and what was presented as ‘normal’ at school. Representation is extremely important in identity formation, and acceptance of one’s self. It makes me wonder, if I were to have the knowledge of sexuality that I do now, would I have reached a more comfortable identity sooner, and felt less pressure surrounding it? This applies specifically to representations of healthy and safe relationships, within a sexuality and/or gender diverse frame.
Sexuality and Relationships Education in school (commonly known as Sex Ed) can often lack in representation. All the queer relationships I had seen were reserved to television shows or movies, where stereotypical roles limited relatability if they don’t fit for you. The school education of what a healthy relationship looked like fit into the heteronormative scope. Man/woman. No variation. No examples of anything else. Many of my own peers recount similar experiences. In all fairness, many of the frameworks delivered can be applied broadly. Communication is important, respect each other etc. However, when every example is restricted to monogamous man/woman relationships, any other dynamic begins to seem ‘wrong’. Understandably there will never be an example of every single relationship combination that has ever, or will ever exist. But a little inclusion can go a long way. Different relationships require different things. For example friends-with-benefits will be different from a boyfriend/ boyfriend one. Each relationship is unique, and all parties involved contribute to the wants, needs and dynamics. As I’ve already said, one of the most important components of any relationship is communication. Talk it out, figure out what everyone wants from the relationship. Does the relationship include sexual activity or not. Maybe two people who’re in a girlfriend/ girlfriend partnership have been in a serious exclusive romantic relationship, and they decide that they would like to open the relationship sexually. New agreements would have to be formed, what limitations would be in place (if any), and how they feel about the new dynamic. Keep talking! It isn’t about a one off talk, and then all is sorted. People change, situations change. Respect is another important element. A healthy relationship has respect for the people involved - including yourself! If your
partner asks to be referred to in particular gender/identity or role word such as man, woman, femme, top, bottom etc. doing so is respectful to them. Correct pronouns and names are a sign of recognition and respect for your partner’s identity. This ties into communication; if there is respect for each other, then there is that safety and willingness to listen to what needs to be said. And within all of this, be honest with yourself and your partner/s. Mind reading is really difficult/impossible! Saying everything is fine, and meaning something else sends mixed messages. If a polyamorous relationship is agreed on, and one partner begins to feel jealous of another, they need to be honest with themselves and identify it, then communicate it with their partners. It can be hard, but with time and effort, all of these can contribute to a healthy relationship. www.scarleteen.com has some great information about healthy relationships. The Freedom Centre is holding its Epic Retreat this month, and within it I have the exciting opportunity to present a healthy relationships workshop, with a focus on all relationships. Inclusions of many different relationships will be presented (sexual, non-sexual, monogamous, non-monogamous, heterosexual, homosexual etc.) and discussions about what makes a healthy relationship with these examples will hopefully allow a representation outside of the heteronormative, and create material that is relatable to more people. Let’s hope that more schools will get on board in providing an inclusive approach to relationship education, and education in general. Danika Freedom Centre Volunteer Master of Sexology student

WA Researchers Release First Australian Trans Mental Health Study Researchers at WA’s own Curtin University have completed the First Australian National Trans Mental Health Study, which examined the mental health of transgender people.
The study was funded by beyondblue and is the largest of its kind in Australia. Researcher Matt Tilley, who is a Clinical Professional Fellow in Curtin’s School of Public Health, spoke to OUTinPerth about the significance of the study. “There are certainly other Australian studies that have occurred, but they haven’t occurred the way we’ve conducted our study. So it really was working with the trans community and various people who formed our advisory group that really assisted us to reach many trans people. The sorts of things that we heard was that they were really delighted to actually be encouraged to participate in such a well-conceived study.” Tilley and his team had been long awaiting the opportunity to conduct this research, and applied for state funding in 2012 but were unsuccessful. “When we have an opportunity to investigate this area and apply for funding from beyondblue, the team of us jumped at this opportunity because we felt that it was certainly something that was extremely worthwhile to be trying to address and also extremely interesting to be looking at because it is such a misrepresented area” 946 people took part in the anonymous study, including 482 trans women, 232 trans men, 136 people who were assigned female at birth but now had a non-binary identity and 96 people who were assigned male at birth but now had a non-binary identity, all aged 18 or older. The study found that trans people experienced disproportionately high levels of mental health problems, in particular anxiety and depression. The report concluded that trans people appear to be 4 times more likely to have ever been diagnosed with depression than the general population, and approximately 1.5 times more likely to have ever been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Tilley said the findings of the study were confirmative of what the researchers had come to expect from preliminary research. “I think we again knew from anecdotal evidence, international evidence and from a previous smaller Australian study, that we were likely to get these sorts of numbers. I think one of the things that is a very important outcome in our study is to understand that there are a range of different experiences which contribute to trans people feeling further discriminated against and marginalised. Really I think one of the things you’ve got to be aware of is the way trans people have reported experiencing and accessing healthcare.” Tilley said he hopes that by providing evidence of the acutely high levels of mental health issues in the trans population, the study could provide a platform to create change. The report, which can be found online, includes a number of possible options to address
12

the issue. “Our report outlines a series of recommendations, and I think that probably if we were going to look at it overall we really need to have an integrated, holistic approach to meeting and addressing this health disparity for trans people.” Tilley went on to explain what types of practical and conceptual options could be beneficial: “Simple things like involving trans people in the decision making processes around policy that affect their health. That’s vital. Because otherwise we end up with this top-down paternalistic model which is currently what’s occurring and isn’t helping people. We don’t have a multidisciplinary clinic in each state and territory, for example. So it means that there are some states and territories where trans people are probably getting better health services than others, but why is that? What’s wrong with our public health system that we can’t provide something like that? Other things like clear referral pathways and protocols so that trans people and their doctors know exactly what the steps are to achieve the medical transition they might be thinking.” However, this is an issue that the wider community should also be involved in to achieve major change. “I think that again we need to be educating our kids in school around difference and diversity more so than we do. I think we need to make sure that our curriculum training for our healthcare professionals coming through includes a respectful approach to difference.” When it comes to an ideological approach, Tilley says individuality is an important factor to consider. “What we need to do is we need to be seeing a person’s whole experience of life and in a trans person’s experience, that also means this sense of sex and gender diversity and how we can go about assisting them to have a better life, have a lower likelihood of experiencing ongoing clinical conditions like depression and anxiety, and how we can assist them to really find their own value within themselves and they can achieve their ultimate goals as human beings.” The First Australian National Trans Mental Health Study can be found at www.transoz.org/bw0274.pdf If you or someone you know is in need of mental health support, please call QLife on 1800 184 527 or Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit www.lifeline.org.au/gethelp Sophie Joske Image: James Rogers

Honourary Doctorate for Giz Watson
Giz Watson, former MLC for The Greens has been awarded an honourary doctorate for her contribution to civil and human rights in Western Australia. The award from Murdoch University was presented last month by Dr Janice Dudley who highlighted Watson’s extensive contribution.
chapels’ renowned Eurasian food and new dinner menu for a delicious beginning to your weekend evenings.
“It is clear that Giz’s activism in the causes of gay and lesbian rights, social justice, indigenous rights, and peace and environmentalism, together with her parliamentary service have made a major contribution to civil and human rights in Western Australia.” Dr Dudley said. In accepting the honour Watson said she was pleased to accept the award for her work as a parliamentarian and as an activist, alongside being a member of the LGBTIQ community. “I am also pleased to accept this honour as a representative of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex community - and as the first openly lesbian member of an Australian Parliament. I pay tribute to other GLBTI community members who have fought and continue to fight for our equality.” Watson said.
Guilty Verdict in Gay Bashing Murder
in a delicous cocktail from our friendly staff or try a fine WA Wine to accompany your meal.
Two men accused of bashing a gay man in a vigilante attack have been found guilty of murder. Daniel Wade Jones and Mark Taylor were on trial accused of murdering Warren Batchelor, 48, at Middle Swan Reserve in Caversham in November 2013. Mr Batchelor was formerly a well-known DJ in Sydney. A jury took just five hours decide on the pairs guilt last month following a two week long trial. The ABC reported that the court heard how the two men confronted Mr Bachelor in the park’s public toilets. Mr Batchelor was having a sexual encounter with another man in the disabled toilet cubicle when Taylor and Jones kicked in the door and attacked the two men. The man who was in the toilet with Mr Bachelor, whose name has been suppressed by the court, gave evidence describing how there was a knock at the door of the cubicle before it was kicked in and both men were attacked. The witness described how Mr Batchelor was ‘king hit’ before being bashed with a metal pole. He died in hospital two days later. The pair will return to count next month for a sentencing hearing.

PUBS Melbourne band Miami Horror are about to release their second album ‘All Possible Futures’ We caught up with band founder Benjamin Plant to chat about the new record. What was it like recording your second album? It was obviously a very long and slow process. It was recorded over three or four years. There’s more pressure on a second album, you kind of freak out and think that you need a big follow up. But I figured if you just stay true and do what you love. I think on a third album you have a bit more room to move because you’ve made two, established a sound, and then you can go in any direction from there. When you take so long to make a record, do you find you get to the end and then discover you don’t like the part you did at the beginning, can it be an eternal circle? Yes, you do, and we were aware of that happening. On this record we really wanted to focus, not so much on classic

Perth’s own prince of laughter is back with yet another sellout hit. This time he’s fresh back from the jungle of ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’. He’s sure to leave a trail of sore bellies and broken hearts.
Cocktail bars are a staple of my life. They give me with laughter; smiles; shelter from the sun, wind and rain; a home away from home and some goddamn awesome drinks. Perth has a great array of choices and one that sits very close to my heart is a little rooftop bar in the heart of Northbridge; Mechanics. I have spent the last two Sunday’s atop the decking with wine in hand, surrounded by friends, perfectly happy. Sunday’s are a place where hangovers are fixed and good friends are made. Their Bloody Mary’s are legendary and come garnished with a mini burger. I mean really, what more could you want when you’re feeling a little ropey on a Sunday lunch time? To accompany their Sunday remedies are a vast array of different cocktails, written and delivered by some of Perth’s finest. I have enjoyed many afternoons and evenings sipping my way through the list of drinks located in the middle of the back bar, plus the stupidly large
array of classics that their team has perfected. On top of the library of cocktails that the team has stored between them, their selection of wines, spirits, beers and ciders are pretty top notch. Numerous ciders and beers, both bottled and tap and I have yet to drink a wine that doesn’t bring a smile to my face. Burgers and chips from Flipside (located below on James St) are a great compliment to the laid back vibe that fills the venue. A mix of great and (brilliantly) awful tunes are paired with the loud sound of conversation that greet you at any place in the venue. The boys that work so hard to make Mechanic’s work are all freaking gems. As with Dominion League (their sibling bar which also includes a wonderful sharing of staff) the people that run this joint as a family. They work hard, and together as a team, which is a beautiful thing and makes the venue the great place that it is. The Mechanics Institute is at the rear of 222 Williams St, Northbridge. Alice Mod

Perth’s resident sweetheart and mistress of The Court herself Hannah Conda will be setting her sights in Sydney this May. The local drag sensation spoke to Sophie Joske about her big move and her time in Perth, including the good times, the not-so good times and where it all began. “I’m making a big break over there, I’m moving over pretty much just to further my drag career and challenge myself. It’s always been one of my goals to be a Sydney showgirl, and hopefully I can make that dream happen.” Hannah shared. But the Bingay hostess and Drag Factory matriarch hasn’t always been the polished performer she is today. Almost five years ago, Hannah was another hopeful babyqueen at Drag Factory on a Wednesday night, then referred to as Amateur Drag Night. The freshfaced entertainer was hoping to study musical theatre, and her good friend Ruby Jewelz encouraged her to use her onstage passion to take on a drag number. “I did not want to do it, I was like ‘Nup, not for me’. And then I gave it one shot, I said ‘I’ll do it one night only’, and that is it. Ruby did my makeup, I borrowed my sister’s little lycra Supré dress, and down I went to The Court for amateur drag and I did my first show. I think the song was ‘Where My kiss?’ by The Sugababes. I loved it. I had the best time.” The budding drag queen was beaten by default for performing only one number instead of two, but the following week, she was back with a vengeance and scored her first drag victory. “From that Wednesday night on I’ve been pretty much in drag every single week since then.” she said. For those who have seen Hannah perform, it’s no surprise she’s got a musical theatre background. She said the two artforms have a number of shared skills. “You’re singing and you’re dancing and you’re acting and it all just ties in and it just worked and because being a more feminine guy, in musical theatre there are a lot of feminine guys but they can always pull off this masculinity in some weird way and I just couldn’t do it, like it just wasn’t right. All I wanted to do was be the female lead.” Now Hannah has a repertoire featuring an enviable catalogue of roles. “Drag has become an avenue for me to literally live out my dreams and be all of the characters I wanted to be as a child growing up. I’ve been Disney princesses, I’ve done Snow White, I’ve done The Little Mermaid, I’ve been one of my favourite Disney
villains Maleficient. I’ve done her, I’ve done Catwoman, oh, I love doing Catwoman. I get to be all these characters. I adore characters, that’s when I feel like I’s alive, because I get to play something, and it is like theatre, you get to be that role and live that dream.” While she’s lived out a number of childhood dreams, she’s also had her fair share of nightmares. She shared one especially harrowing tale of a Christmas show that went horribly wrong. “I was doing Bette Midler, ‘Mele Kalikimaka’ it’s a Hawaiian Christmas song. I came out with a grass skirt on and I had a ukulele and I’m pretending to play the ukulele as I’m wandering around the stage and everyone is just loking at me like ‘What the hell is going on?’ So I decided, I thought ‘Wow, let’s make it dramatic, I’m going to smash the ukulele onstage.’ And so I tried to but it’s this plastic Disney princess ukulele and it wouldn’t smash so I’m just having this tantrum trying to break the ukulele. People are watching as I’m having this meltdown because the show was awful. It was one of those things, but looking back I laugh. Once I finished I was like ‘That was awful.’ But I couldn’t help but laugh. You just have to laugh at yourself and realise these things happen, it’s ok, let’s move forward.” It seems that living that dream is paying off. Hannah’s been attracting acclaim both locally and internationally. Her performance of ‘No Good Deed’ from the musical ‘Wicked’ was featured on ‘Morgan McMichael’s Living for the Lipsync’ and she was voted into the top ten of Dragaholic’s fan poll asking readers who they would like to see on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 8, featuring 200 queens from around the world. Hannah said she was overwhelmed by all the support she’d received in the poll. “It was really really nice to see all the support behind me and the fact that they got me up to that top ten was just incredible and it was so, so beautiful and I couldn’t thank everybody enough that they did that.” Hannah said that if she was capable of getting a VISA and getting accepted into ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, she’d do it in a heartbeat. “It is one of my dreams to do, and it’s a goal of mine. Like anything, whether or not it happens is another story, but it’s always good to have those goals and it pushes you to go harder. I hope that one day I can get on there and I can showcase to the world the talent that I have, and I can showcase to the world what little Perth can produce. I think Perth produces so many talents. Not only in drag but in all the arts. We have so many talented people in Perth and I’d like to showcase that to the world.” Look out for Hannh Conda’s big farewell at www.thcourt.com.au Sophie Joske Image: Angelo Di-Benedetto

‘Wentworth’, Foxtel’s reimaging of the iconic Australian series ‘Prisoner’ has been a ratings smash around the world and the third season is about to start soon. Despite our best interrogation, Pamela wouldn’t give much up about what will happen in Season 3. Of all the characters in Wentworth, Joan Ferguson has to be the most iconic of them all. Did you have any trepidation before taking on the role? No, just a lot of excitement. It’s a great role and when I got the phone call I squealed into the phone to my agent. Maggie Kirkpatrick is someone I’ve admired for a very long time, and I’ve worked with, we played mother and daughter in a play with a very long extended theatrical run. So I know her well and I’m so full of admiration and adoration for who she is, and what she brought to the creation of this character of Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson. When I found out I’d be playing this role, it’s like all your Christmases have come at once. It’s unusual in television, this is largely a show about women, was that part of the appeal of doing a TV project? Absolutely, I’ve been very lucky in most of the screen work I’ve done. What I love about being an actor is the ‘work family’ that you create because it’s such a peripatetic life. You go from job to job, whatever the contract, sometimes it’s a few days, often with a theatre piece it’s a couple of months and then you move on. So the quality of the collaborations and the connections you make in the work that you do that are really important.
I’ve been lucky enough in my adventures in screen both in film and television that have been real ensemble companies. I was involved in a few films in the ‘90s like ‘Paradise Road’ that was about female prisoners of war and ‘Cosi’ which was about a whole group of patients at a mental health facility in the ‘70s and also things like this series which is centered around a woman’s prison. It means you have a cavalcade of the cream of Australia’s female actor talent. It’s such a privilege to get to work with everyone, a huge privilege and, as you said, a real attraction. A prison is a rich setting for drama. Nobody is one hundred percent good or evil in Wentworth, it’s all shades of grey in-between. I’ve always thought that to be in an environment where everything is always on the brink of chaos, how do people maintain control? Whether you’re a prisoner trying to stay safe, or whether you’re an officer, or the governor, trying to keep the place functioning and keep everyone in line. The challenges never stop coming and that’s great fodder for drama.
also sympathetic producers who were able to work their timetable successfully. So I just opened a show two nights ago in Sydney, ‘Jumpy’ with Jane Turner and Marina Prior. It’s been great! Can you give us any clues about what’s inline for The Freak in the upcoming season? All I can say is expect the unexpected. The battle truly is on between Bea Smith and Joan Ferguson, and they’re both capable of giving a very good fight. Whenever we do a story on Wentworth it’s extremely popular, and the show is loved internationally, what do you attribute that appetite to? It’s an incredibly clicked in fandom. I think it’s the way that the show is constructed. You might sit down to just watch one episode but then you binge watch five in a row. So it certainly releases endorphins, the fans of the show are so engaged. They’re constantly trying to sniff out, like truffle dogs, any morsel of information about the show. Season 3 of ‘Wentworth’ starts on Foxtel’s SOHO channel on Tuesday 7th April. Graeme Watson
On the show Joan Fergusson has been described as ‘The Fixer’ – has Christopher Pine been watching? [laughs] I suspect he has, that’s hysterical! In your off-time from the show you’ve been busy performing Samuel Beckett in Adelaide and directing a play at the Sydney Opera House, how do you fit it all in? I love working! I was performing on stage in Melbourne in the evenings over the first few weeks of my filming ‘Wentworth’. As soon as filming finished I was off doing more acting and directing. I’ve been very lucky with scheduling and

Mac said he still gets nervous despite having decades of experience. “I can’t help it. It’s because I always want to be perfect and I think a lot about what I’m going to play, and how to do it, and working on the mixes and rehearsing it, getting it altogether. It’s pretty raw, being up there onstage. It’s like you’re kind of saying to a lot of people, here’s my soul, what do you think of it? [Laughs] Those songs are so intimate and there are lyrics about your life, and there are thing you’ve really sweated over, and you’re saying to a large group of strangers ‘Hey, what do you think?’ … Mardi Gras has meant a lot to me over my life and to play one of the big rooms was like ‘Wow. I’ve made it.’”
The album covers a lot of ground, from the heartbreaking to the humorous. ‘Idiot’ is a lighthearted collaboration with Megan Washington about falling for a simpleton and ‘FAQ’ explores some of the awkwardness familiar to anyone who’s ever had a first date. Mac explained how this

Mac has an extraordinary catalogue of Australian artists on the album, including Kira Puru and the legendary Dave Mason from synth-pop band The Reels. He said he finds that collaboration can make his music more personal. “I like working that way because I feel like I can go really personal on lyrics because I’m not singing them, I’ve got other people to sing them for me, which acts as a bit of a buffer. Even though there’s all these different singers, I think when you hear the album there’s definitely a mood and an angle which is me, and you can hear that and that’s what the link is, it definitely feels like a Paul Mac album even though there’s heaps of different singers and different styles.”

Paul Mac is one of Australia’s most prolific DJs, movers, shakers and music makers. He’s lent his hand to a number of different outfits including Itch-E and Scratch-E and The Dissociatives. After keeping himself busy remixing everyone from Placebo to Kylie Minogue and making music for the stage and screen, Mac is releasing a brand new solo album ‘Holiday From Me’. He chatted to Sophie Joske fresh after the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras weekend, where he debuted some of his new tracks in front of thousands at the Horton Pavilion.
‘Holiday From Me’ is Mac’s first solo album in almost a decade. He’s been working on the album for the past eight years alongside his many other musical projects. He said taking that time to develop the music allowed him to cultivate experiences he could draw from. “In the middle of that ten years there was a five year relationship, which gave me plenty to write about [Laughs] I mean, you just live and stuff comes out.”

Music with a Message When I went to get tested for HIV myself, I realised that the emotion that I was feeling was not anger, it was fear.
music
Michael Franti tells us why he wrote ‘Positive’ a song about his experience of getting tested for HIV. Franti first arrived on the music scene as front man of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. In the early ‘90s the band got worldwide attention with their combination of hip hop and industrial music. On the band’s debut album he rapped about social justice and politics on tracks like ‘Television – The Drug of a Nation’ and ‘Everyday Life Has Become a Health Risk’ and the band delivered their take on the punk classic ‘California Uber Alles’. Twenty one years ago he changed direction when he launched Spearhead, a new music project that was musically focused more on soul, roots and blues sounds. Under the Spearhead moniker Franti delivered a gentler message. Today Franti acknowledges that he’s been on quite a journey as a musician. “Well when I first started out, two things: one is that I didn’t play any instruments, I just had my voice. I rapped and eventually with the Disposable Heroes I learned how to use drum machines and samplers, and the studio became my instrument.” Franti credits collaborator Charlie Hunter with showing him that he could make music that was more melodic, while staying true to his political beliefs. “During that time I started working with Charlie Hunter, who’s this incredible jazz guitarist, and I would sing with Charlie and
he would play on guitar, and I’d rap over it and I would hear how just adding a little bit of melody to the chords he was playing, it would change, he was playing the same note but changing the chord underneath it, it just made an entirely different melody and emotion. I learned how to express emotion through melody and that became a different way of addressing issues.” Fanti said. Throughout his career Franti has always been a vocal advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS whether it’s been through contributing to fundraising initiatives like the ‘Red Hot and Jazz’ project or sharing his own experiences. “When I made the first Spearhead album, there was a song called ‘Positive’ on it. It was a song about getting tested for HIV and the first song that I wrote for it was more in the Disposable Heroes style, it was like ‘fuck the government, they’re not responding to this crisis that’s taking place in the world and I’m really pissed off about it. “Then when I went to get tested for HIV myself, I realised that the emotion that I was feeling was not anger, it was fear. It was sadness and it was anxiety about thinking about all the people I had had unprotected sex with, could I have this virus?” Franti shared. “So the song that I wrote took on a much different tone, and from that I realised that every issue that is in my heart I had different emotions attached to it and to
express those is what really making music is about and that just making every song being about pumping my fist and raging against these things that are happening outside, but more about looking at what’s happening inside in me. Franti notes that when he wrote about his experience of getting tested for HIV it was at a time when artists were just beginning to raise awareness through music. “When I was writing that song ‘Positive’ it was at a time in San Fran Cisco where I had four friends of mine die in a six month period, of AIDS. And there were no songs about it. And certainly no one writing songs about testing. “It was something that I felt a personal connection to and I think today, young people have grown up with an understanding of HIV and AIDS but maybe not a clear understanding of where it’s surfacing today. Maybe it is time for there to be more songs about it.” Franti said. Michael Franti and Spearhead are performing at Red Hill Auditorium on Saturday 18th April. Also on the bill; Blue King Brown, Donavon Frankenreiter and Tijuana Cartel. Head to www.redhillgigs.com.au for tickets. The Prodigy The Day is My Enemy
Shane Howard Deeper South Former Goanna front man Shane Howard, has returned with his latest solo project ‘Deeper South’. Since his departure from Goanna, Howard has used his 13 solo projects for more intimate, personal explorations of themata through music and lyrics. ‘Deeper South’ is an earnest investigation of heritage, which comes through loud and clear in the albums deft fusion of Irish, Celtic and indigenous sound. The all-acoustic album follows Howard closely though this discovery, from soulful ballads to energetic Irish jigs. – Leigh Hill
Following on from their recent energetic appearance at Future Music, The Prodigy’s sixth album is a return to form. ‘Kicking off with the title track The Prodigy preset a dense complex sound that assaults your senses. Lead single ‘Nasty’ showcases Keith Flint’s legendary snarly vocals while ‘Ibiza’ featuring Sleaford Mods features a great cockney rap lyrics. Over 15 tracks The Prodigy present an unrelenting concoction of sounds that reminds of us of their ‘Fat of the Land’ heyday of two decades past.. - Graeme Watson
Courtney Barnett Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit
All We Are Self-titled All We Are, a three piece from Liverpool, have a particularly unique sound. Bordering on ambience, the album elevates their sound to another level, far beyond that of lounge listening. The album plays fluidly between tracks, though each track slowly introduces nuances that creep up on you; ‘I Wear You’ will have you tapping along to the beat before you’ve even noticed the hum of the track prior has slowly faded away. Slow, yet somehow upbeat – a wonderfully unique album. – Leigh Hill
Filled with endless catchy tunes, clever turns of phrases, stream of conscious honesty and killer attitude, this is the album you’ll put in your car stereo and leave it there for months. Melbourne singer songwriter Barnett will have you hooked from the opening track ‘Elevator Operator’ to the album’s closer. On ‘Nobody Really Cares if You Go to the Party’ Barnett captures a dilemma we’ve all been though as she sings “I wanna go out but I wanna stay home”. At the end of the year when everyone lists their favourite records of the year this one’s guaranteed a spot. Graeme Watson

Having penned tunes for Sophie Ellis-Bextor and having international #1’s with his single ‘Fade Out Lines’, ‘The Wanderings Of Avener’ is a culmination of his efforts. ‘Wanderings’ is an eclectic collection, featuring house, soul and blues tracks that all stand out as strong in their own genre, and as an LP. ‘Wanderings’ notably features Norwegian enchantress Ane Brun on his luminous track ‘To Let Myself Go’, and an exceptional remix of Mazzy Star’s cult hit, ‘Fade Into You’.– Leigh Hill

Claudio and Daivd: It really is 100% about the crowd. When we are fortunate enough to be in a country where the people really know how to enjoy a party and give themselves up to the music and have a good time, then it gives us so much energy to return back to them with the best of ourselves and our sounds. It is essential for us to be partying along with the crowd so knowing everyone is having a good time is everything to us. Of course a nice venue, good lighting, strong alcohol (Triple JD and Cokes please!) and a pair of hot DJ’s helps! When you get ready for a night out do you coordinate your outfits? Claudio: Ah here’s a sore point when it comes to the DJ’ing – picking outfits to wear!
The London based duo Sex Shooters have taken the world by storm, turning up at parties, clubs and dance events across the globe. The duo are bringing their high energy DJ performance to Connections Nightclub over the Easter long weekend. OUTinPerth traded emails with the highly attractive pair and discovered one of them is no stranger to Perth. How did Sex Shooters come about, how long have you been DJing together? Claudio: David was doing his photography thing at Gigolo in London and I happened to drop in for a drink after finishing a show. (I used to be an actor) and the rest is history! We started working together as Sex Shooters almost instantly, both having a complete
career change and combined our passion for music to see where we could take it. Two years on we’ve had an amazing time playing all over the world! Will this be your first trip to Australia? What have you heard about our country? David: Well… my first true love was Charlene from Neighbours and I lived and breathed for the wedding with Kylie and Jason. That ‘Suddenly’ song was everything to me. Rewind and repeat! Other than that this will be my first trip to Australia so I’m really excited to meet the people, see the beaches and get some much needed sun and speedo action! Claudio: I’m a Perth boy! So Australia is home for me. However I’ve been living all over the world for the last 10 years and every time i come back to Perth it feels like a totally different city. Last time I visited I would have never have thought that I would be returning three years later as a DJ to play in my hometown!
David: When we’re not DJ’ing our we kick around in shorts and vests spending time between the gym and the studio. Claudio: We try not to check-in luggage between all of our flights so we’ve got a pretty minimal wardrobe available to us when we play. David: It’s quite funny really, I think we have 3 DJ ‘uniforms’ that are in circulation on this tour at the moment. Claudio: There’s the black vest… David: Our lumber jack cut off shirts (definite matching outfit) Claudio: And… Our denim cut-off things, but thinking to hit to the shops in Perth for our Connections and Perth debut! Suggestions anyone!? Catch Sex Shooters David and Claudio at Connections Nightclub on Sunday April 5th. Graeme Watson

Big Eyes (PG)
A Little Chaos
I think we’ve forgotten how restrictive it was for women in the middle of last century. When Margaret (Amy Adams) left her abusive first husband in the 1950s, she had to fight to keep her daughter. Marrying the charismatic Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) allowed her to keep her daughter but created another problem. Walter helped her sell her paintings of wideeyed waifs when his Paris streetscapes didn’t sell. Margaret found out that he was also taking credit for her popular creations, but by the time he was mass-producing the big-eyed orphans and she had become a co-conspirator. While this film isn’t quite as dark and twisted as Tim Burton’s previous works, the dark overtones still underlie this creepy true story. As Walter becomes more famous, Margaret is isolated and trapped and she feels her sanity draining away. This gripping drama has with enough psychosis to give a Burtonesque view of Margaret’s world.
In 1682, Andre Le Nôtre was in charge of constructing the Versailles gardens, although he was not as sizzlingly sexy as Belgian Matthias Schoenaerts who plays him in Alan Rickman’s second feature film. The times of King Louis XIV of France (69 year old Alan Rickman taking both sides of the camera) demanded that nature was supressed and tamed … much like females. A fictional widow, Madame Sabine De Bara (Kate Winslet), is hired by Le Nôtre to construct the Rockwork Garden (Versailles’s La Salle De Bal in real life). In turning the muddy grotto into something of beauty, the fiercely independent Bara has her own ideas about not taming everything that grows, even though there actually aren’t that many plants in her outdoor ballroom. This is a sumptuous costume drama, with Le Nôtre and Bara the most naturalistic characters among the camp procession of the Sun King’s court.

Infinitely Polar Bear (M) While We’re Young
(PG)
Directed by Maya Forbes
Directed by Noah Boaumbach
Having a father who is bipolar must have been difficult. Having that father as the primary caregiver would certainly be something to make a film about, as Maya Forbes does in her autobiographical directing debut. Mark Ruffalo excels as Cameron Stuart, whose mental breakdown changes his life and threatens his marriage. He agrees to look after daughters Amelia (Imogene Wolodarsky, the filmmaker’s daughter) and Faith (Ashley Aufderheide) while his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) returns to study and employment. While Maggie visits from the other side of the country on weekends, the chain-smoking Cam throws himself into the task. Forbes, whose own father referred to his illness as ‘infinitely polar bear’, concentrates on the manic highs and the humorous situations that arise. But she also includes some of the anguish and unfortunate alcohol-fuelled rages as the two girls pitch in to hold the family unit together.
Documentary maker Josh (Ben Stiller) and producer Cornelia (Naomi Watts) are in their early forties. The New York couple have comfortable and moderately successful lives but they begin to look at life differently when all their friends start having children. When they meet a couple in their twenties they begin to feel re-energised, even though their bodies sometimes have trouble keeping up with their new activities. Like Josh, Jamie (Adam Driver) is interested in making documentaries and they undertake a project together. Darby (Amanda Seyfried) introduces Cornelia to hip-hop dancing and the four of them undergo vomit cleansings with a rather dubious shaman. Boaumbach’s film is an hilarious look at trying to hang onto youth but it also allows for a huge amount of empathy for middle aged crises. There are also some interesting ideas about the changing face of documentaries in at a time when people record everything.
