The time is now, but we’ll have to wait The campaign for marriage equality took another few steps forward this month with the introduction of Labor leader Bill Shorten’s private member’s bill. It’s not a march to equality, more a dance. One which involves two steps forward, one sideways and one backwards – as politics takes over. Australia lags behind the rest of the English speaking world, with the exception of Northern Ireland, and twenty other nations as we show that we are one of the most conservative and least progressive nations with our failure to introduce marriage equality. Shorten’s bill is almost certain to die a death in committee as Labor don’t have the numbers to bring it to a vote. It’s still significant. It’s the first time the leader of a major party has brought a bill before parliament and given a speech declaring LGBTIQ people are equal in every way. For months we’ve been locked in an impasse with the Liberals refusing to discuss a free vote until they saw legislation, and other parties refusing to put forward legislation without the issue of a free vote for Liberal members being addressed. A classic catch-22. The Greens have a bill, Liberal Democrat David Leyonjhelm has a bill, Labor too now has a bill. The disappointment is that it’s taken so long to get to this point. The previous Rudd, Gillard, Rudd governments could have made this happen and so could have the Abbott government. Now the impasse has been broken, the Prime Minister has said that this issue should be owned by the parliament without a
single political party taking ownership of it. Nice words with no action. The opportunity to show bi-partisan leadership on this issue has been available for years – and the calls from the vast majority of Australians have been ignored. While arguing that leadership on this issue should be above political parties the Prime Minister and his colleagues sent the opposite message when Shorten spoke about his bill. When the leader of the opposition was telling Australia’s gay youth; “We are proud of you, for who you are, you belong. We say to you that you have a right to the same hopes, dreams and opportunities as every other Australian.” The Prime Minister and the vast majority of the government, albeit five members, were absent from parliament.
Damon Lockwood 11
While there is only a requirement for two government members to be present in the house, the absence showed that they Liberal party were more interested in playing politics than addressing the issue. The absence delivered the message that they do not care about LGBTIQ people.
Dan Slater 18
Now there is the suggestion that a new cross party bill later in the year may be the next move in the dance. Like one of those marathon dance competitions they held during the great depression, the tired dancers continue to shuffle their feet around the ballroom. The time is now, the wait will be longer.

Hannah Conda bid her final adieu to The Court Hotel last month with the biggest farewell bash a queen could ask for. Before being unleashed on her adoring public, Hannah enjoyed a personal farewell from the team at The Court Hotel, including drag numbers from her friends and colleagues. There were also emotional speeches, including a tribute from The Court’s owner Bree Maddox and Hannah’s father, who gave a moving account of his son coming out and becoming one of Perth’s best loved drag queens. Then, Hannah took to the DJ booth to spin some gay anthems and good old fashioned pop music on the outside dance floor before being treated to a final show. Veronica Jean Jones took the reigns as friends and favourites including Ruby Jewelz, Sheila Mann, Barbie Q, dancers Jesse and Jermaine D’Vauz showed their love for the hostess with the most through song and dance. Sydney’s Charisma Belle also made a surprise appearance, and plenty of guests made their love known through video tribute before Hannah herself went out with a bang, covering herself in paint to Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause’. It was a fitting farewell for a queen who has been giving her all to the Perth drag scene for the last five years. There’ll be a Hannah Conda-shaped hole in Perth’s heart for years to come. The dental dam is a safe sex device that, for many, is shrouded in mystery. Sadly lacking in the ubiquitousness of its latex brethren the condom, it’s not uncommon for a modern sexually active person of any orientation to be entirely unaware of its existence. It is surprising then that this elusive prophylactic is often touted as the go-to protection for queer women. For those who have yet to become familiar with the charms of the dental dam, it is a thin latex square that can be used as a barrier between mouth and vulva or mouth and anus during oral sex to prevent the transmission of STIs. While it’s currently the only STI prevention measure available specifically for these oral sex acts, it seems that the humble dental dam has yet to achieve popularity. One factor limiting the use of dental dams is their scarcity. They are not always readily available in pharmacies and sex shops, so it may require a visit to a safe sex clinic or GP to hunt them down in your area (although they are available at the WA AIDS Council in West Perth and the Sexual and Reproductive Health Centre in Northbridge). As any LGBTI person who’s had to have a pap-smear will know, discussions about sexuality with your doctor can be awkward at best.
Many safe sex resources (including the government of Western Australia’s ‘Get the Facts’ website) suggests that an alternative to purchasing a ready-made dental dam is to fashion one by getting a condom open into a square, but it can be a bit of a mood killer to interrupt proceedings for a quick arts and crafts session. So why can’t dental dams be made more readily available? According to an investigation on the subject by Arielle Duhaime-Ross for The Verge, a number of retailers cite a lack of customer interest. Could it be that the dental dam is caught in a vicious cycle? Perhaps it is not well-known enough to become commercially viable, and its consequent scarcity contributes to its obscurity. Curtin University Associate Professor Sam Winter said that there is “relatively little research” regarding the dental dam and its prevalence in the queer community, but that there may be a number of factors preventing their widespread use
including people not knowing they exist or being too embarrassed to purchase them. Another possibility is that these friendly and occasionally fruity latex squares just aren’t sexy enough. Krista Burton, author of the popular lesbian blog ‘Effing Dykes’ wrote the following evocative statement about performing oral sex with the use of a dental dam: “You may as well put Saran wrap on an ice cream cone.” (Saran wrap is the American answer to Glad wrap, which you should definitely, definitely not use as a substitute for a dental dam). But honestly, if people can get used to the idea of rolling a weird plastic sleeve over their respective members like some sort of bizarre genital turtleneck, then is the use of dental dams really that much of a stretch? Perhaps the need for protection just doesn’t seem as urgent when there’s no penetration or risk of pregnancy involved. Sadly, a large number of modern sexhavers only received sex education pertaining to the recreational union of penis and vagina.
However, sex is a lot more complicated and varied than simply Tab A being inserted into Slot B, and we really should be aiming to protect ourselves in as many situations as possible. While you can’t get someone pregnant through oral sex no matter how hard you try, it still carries a number of risks. Cunnilingus can transmit a number of STIs including herpes and genital warts, and analingus carries these same risks with the possibility of other infections such as hepatitis. Both carry risks of HIV infection, and the chance of transmission is higher without protection, especially if menstrual blood or any open wounds are involved. And really, aren’t most things in life sexier than STIs? Maybe it’s time to give it a dam chance. As the website for the SHEER Glyde Dam cheerfully states, condoms don’t cover it all! Sophie Joske

You’ve probably seen Colourful Dave at Fairday or The Court Hotel, he’s pretty easy to spot because he’s never gone out in a sedate outfit. Meeting Colourful Dave at his home I confessed that despite meeting several times before, all I knew about him was that he’s a committed Christian, sometimes uses a wheelchair to get about and he always lives up to his name. Colourful Dave shared that he grew up here in Perth. Impressively his father built the family home in the northern suburbs. Diagnosed with severe epilepsy in his youth Colourful Dave’s suffered several head injuries which have given him additional challenges in life. “My epilepsy is quite severe,” Colourful Dave shared, “I have several fits each day.” Living on his own is quite challenging and finding a housemate is one of Colourful Dave’s goals, but he said for many people having a housemate with a disability would be quite hard. Colourful Dave said he decided to adopt his name after a friend started referring to him as such. “It was a nickname that I friend of mine started using and I liked it.” Colourful Dave shared, “I’ve always loved colours, all my life. Some of my family think I’m a bit strange but they just don’t realise this is just who I am.”
The LGBTIQ community is made up of many different and vibrant characters. This month we got to know Colourful Dave a little better.
“I’ve always had faith, it’s always been something I’ve had. Growing up I’ve always had a faith in God and I became a Christian when I was aged ten.” Early in his life Colourful Dave was involved in the Uniting Church but today he meets likeminded gay Christians at an informal Church group. Colourful Dave keeps himself busy with several different projects. He runs a book exchange from the carport of his house, living on a busy street in a busy neighbourhood he has many customers. He’s also written a book about his life experiences. In ‘From Destination to Finding Destiny’ he shares he struggles with mental illness and accepting his sexuality and reconciling this with his religious beliefs. “Writing the book took a long time,” Colourful Dave said, “I had a quite a bit of help from other people.” Colourful Dave hopes the book will be helpful to anyone else in a similar situation. He has spoken at conferences and to community groups about his experiences. Looking forward Colourful Dave said he’d like to see his self-published book distributed more widely, and hopes to attract the attention of a publisher, and he’d like to create a website to attract more attention to the project. To get a copy of Colourful Dave’s book for only $25.00 send an order to Mr Colourful Dave, PO Box X2222, Perth, WA, 6847 Graeme Watson

Remembered for his good looks, which often overshadowed his acting ability, Hunter was a matinee heart-throb that both girls and boys had crushes on. “In every picture they managed to take his shirt off.” George Takei contributes in the film. Film critic Rex Reed describes Hunter as the all American boy who had a career playing a range of roles. “He was the good looking sailor, or he was the good looking marine, or he was the good looking air force pilot.”
In the 1950’s actor Tab Hunter’s career was just beginning. With his blonde hair and good looks the former Californian coast guard was making his mark on Hollywood, but Hunter had a secret. One night the budding young actor headed out to a party. “I would go out occasionally to a cocktail party,” recounts Hunter, now 83, “I was fascinated by all that I saw there, there were some guys dancing with a few guys, a couple of gals dancing with gals. It was just a party, and people were dancing and having a good time.” In the 1950’s though, parties like this where gay people mingled were illegal. “The next thing I knew the cops came in.” Hunter recalls.

While Hunter’s 1950 arrest for disorderly conduct was kept under wraps, five years later it was exposed by gossip magazine Confidential. The story suggestive didn’t end his career though, Hunter went on to star in bigger and bigger films including the musical ‘Damn Yankees’. He starred opposite leading ladies of the time including Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren. Now Hunter is sharing the story of his life, a revealing look into how celebrity forced many gay men to live a closeted life with romances with female co-stars created by the studio machine. Based on his bestselling autobiography, the documentary ‘Tab Hunter Confidential’ sees the actor candidly share his experiences. Featuring commentary from John Waters, Robert Wagner, George Takei, film critics and entertainment reporters of the time, alongside revealing interviews with Hunter himself, this documentary delivers a fascinating story of not only a Hollywood career but our changing attitudes to the relevance of the sexuality of celebrities.
Hunter’s career continued into the 60’s and he moved to France for a period of time to make Spaghetti Westerns. In the 1980’s Hunter’s career had a second wave of success when he appeared in some of the campest films of the decade including ‘Grease 2’, John Waters’ ‘Polyester’ and Paul Bartels’ ‘Lust in the Dust’. The two latter films saw Hunter appearing on screen opposite drag superstar Divine. Today Hunter is retired and living in California with his partner Allan Glaser, the couple have been together for over 30 years. He’s turned down offers to return to the screen. Some of Hollywood’s biggest Directors have attempted to coax him out of retirement, but they’ve had no success. Don’t miss this documentary that delivers at captivating look into a Hollywood career and the publicity machines behind career success. ‘Tab Hunter – Confidential’ will be screening next month as part of the Revelation International Film Festival. culture As the title suggests, the play delivers a vision of what possibly could have occurred to lead to Christianity as it is known today. While many writers would be daunted by the topic of religion and its tendency to attract controversy, Lockwood appears to have a healthy mixture of excitement and anticipation about the project. “I think people can smell when people try to do something just for controversy’s sake.” Lockwood said. “We’ll wait and see where the cards fall.” The cast of the show is made up of some of Perth’s best actors, including Andrea Gibbs, Brendan Hanson, Talei Howell-Price, Nick Pages-Oliver & Sean Walsh. Casting the son of God is no small feat, but Lockwood said the choice was obvious. “Shane Adamczak as Jesus because of his pale skin, red hair and poor eyesight, I mean it casts itself, really, doesn’t it?” he chuckled.
Local theatrical Renaissance man Damon Lockwood has got a busy couple of months ahead. He’ll be remounting his critically acclaimed by ‘Horsehead’ as well as bringing forth the debut of a brand new production at The Blue Room. The director, actor and playwright took some time out from his busy schedule to chat about his projects with OUTinPerth.
‘Horsehead’ was first performed in 2008, and has gone on to have seven seasons and won Best Play at Rome Fringe Festival in 2012. Lockwood shared the unique story of how ‘Horsehead’ came to be. “My youngest son was three weeks old, and my beautiful partner gave me some rubbish excuse about being really tired because she hadn’t had a proper night’s sleep in three weeks and she wondered if I could look after this thing by myself for the very first time in my life. And I went ‘Of course!’ How hard can that be?’ I looked down at him and thought ‘What the crap do I do with this?’ and I thought ‘He’s my son, we’re both men, the best thing we can do is watch ‘The Godfather together’. Then the horse head scene came around, and I looked down at him and I said ‘God, can you imagine the two guys that actually had to do that?’ and bang, the thunderbolt hit and a week later I had the first draft. My little 3 week old boy gave it to me.”
That little boy is almost eight years old now, and ‘Horsehead’ is making a triumphant return to Perth for the Independent Theatre Festival at the Subiaco Arts Centre. The play stars Lockwood himself and Sam Longley as a pair of hapless wannabe gangsters who must prove their worth to the mafia in a violent and gory fashion. Lockwood is also bringing to the stage a brand new production, provocatively titled ‘Jesus: No Ordinary Life’. He said he found himself inspired by the theatrics of Biblical storytelling. “Great stories, great writing, man. Awesome stuff. A guy who saves two of every species on the planet I mean that’s just insanity. There’s more species of beetle than all other insects in the world so he really did a fantastic job. I just think it’s great storytelling, and peoples, given peoples’ nature, have used it for their own base and nefarious things over time.”
Lockwood said when it comes to theatre, his first consideration is always the audience. So what ihas he got in store for those who come to see ‘Jesus: No Ordinary Life’? “I hope they have a fantastic night at the theatre, and to be presented with an alternative, an alternate story to one that has had so much impact on the course of history and humanity.” Sophie Joske ‘Horsehead’ is at the Subiaco Arts Centre from June 3rd-6th, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on June 26th and 27th and the Cummins Theatre in Merredin on July 4th, details available at www.damonlockwood.com ‘Jesus: No Ordinary Life’ is at The Blue Room Theatre from June 16th to July 4th, tickets available from www.blueroom.org

PFLAG Goes Postal on
New Major HIV Study:
Marriage Equality Test Frequently
and Treat Early
According to new research, people living with HIV should begin treatment immediately rather than waiting until their immune system has been affected by the virus. The results from a world-first clinical trial have shown that early treatment of people with HIV has better long-term health outcomes than the previous approach where treatment is delayed. The Kirby Institute has announced the interim findings from the Strategic Timing of Anti-Retroviral Treatment (START) study. The major international study has been coordinated by the Institute and involved 4,685 individuals across 35 different countries. The participants who had never taken anti-retroviral medications were split into two groups, half followed an early treatment regime, while the second half of the group waited until their CD4+ count fell to 350 cells/mm³. The study found that the risk of serious AIDS events, and deaths due to non-AIDS events including major cardiovascular events, renal and liver disease and cancer was reduced by more than 50% among those in the early treatment group, compared to those in the deferred treatment group.
Since Ireland’s recent landmark referendum, pressure is mounting for Australia to keep up with our intercontinental peers in legislating marriage equality. Shelley Argent, national spokesperson for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), does not want to give Canberra any more excuses. Argent says over 2 million emails in support of equality have been sent and brushed aside. “As parents we bring our children into this world believing Australia is a free and equal society. However, when one “comes out” we quickly realize this country is not about equality”. Argent is heading right up to the government’s doorstep to hand-deliver a suitcase full of letters in support of marriage equality. LGBTIQ community members and allies have penned letters to their members of parliament expressing why they are invested in legislation for marriage equality. With both the Greens and Labor introducing bills to parliament, it is Tony Abbott himself that Argent hopes to sway, urging the Prime Minister to disregard his personal beliefs and allow the Coalition to vote freely. During Bill Shorten’s introduction of Labor’s marriage equality bill on June 1st, most members of the Coalition were absent. In her letter addressed directly to the PM, Argent addresses the Prime Minister personally: “Those who disagree with marriage equality may have their beliefs challenged, but their lives will not be changed in any way. If my son and your sister are given the right to marry their partner of choice, they will have much to gain and a lot to lose should this legislation remain unchanged. “It is time, Mr. Abbott, procrastinate no longer, say ‘yes’ to a Free Vote and ensure that there is no intimidation on how to vote. It’s a debate that needs to be respectful amongst colleagues in the parliament and society as a whole”. Ms. Argent arrived in Canberra on June 1st with over 40kg of letters addressed to federal MPs and Mr. Abbott. Leigh Hill

“These findings have global implications for the treatment of people living with HIV,” said Professor Sean Emery, co-ordinating investigator of the START study from the Kirby Institute at UNSW Australia. “As a result of this trial, we know now that the treatment all stages of the disease extends survival and prevents serious disease complications in people with HIV infection. Together with data from previous studies showing reduced risk of transmission among people on ART (AntiRetroviral Treatment), these new findings support treatment for everyone with HIV.” Professor Emery said. The results which show increased health benefits by early treatment reinforce why regular testing to enable early detection of the virus is paramount to people at risk of exposure to HIV. The results of the study have been welcomed by the WA AIDS Council. Chief executive Andrew Burry said the finding reinforce why regular testing is essential. “For the first time we’ve got really solid evidence that it’s better to be on treatment, regardless of CD4 counts, rather than to not be on treatment.” Mr Burry told OUTinPerth. “While we haven’t had a limit since last year when a diagnosed person can begin treatment, there still difficult decision making for anyone making that decision. This evidence means that there’s clear benefit and hopefully that will make that decision making easier.” Mr Burry said. Since April 2014 HIV-positive Medicare eligible individuals have been able to have unrestricted access to Anti-Retroviral treatments. The WA AIDS Council’s Positive Peer Educator Liz Walker said that while decisions upon when to begin treatment for HIV are for each individual she encouraged people to consider the results of the study. “I would encourage HIV-positive individuals to discuss the START study with their HIV clinician. For those who choose to defer ART treatment it is important to remain retained in care and continued monitoring and close follow-up.” Ms Walker said. It is estimated that 35 million people are currently living with AIDS around the globe. Of these only 12.9 are currently on treatment. For more information about HIV visit the WA AIDS Council website, free testing is available for men at the M-Clinic. Graeme Watson

Where does Australia Stand on Marriage Equality?
On June 1st, opposition leader Bill Shorten introduced a marriage equality bill to parliament cosigned by Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek. “The laws of our nation should give us hope,” Shorten said. “Our laws should tell our children what we believe, our laws should tell strangers who Australians are, our laws should be a mirror reflecting our great and generous country and our free inclusive society. He went on to declare that Australia was falling behind on the issue. “Our parliament should be a place where we make things happen, rather than sit back and let them happen. On marriage equality for too long, we in this parliament have been following not leading.” As part of an extended piece responding to the introduction of Shorten’s bill, conservative commentator Andrew Bolt declared “The battle for same-sex marriage has been won”. For a columnist who once referred to same sex marriage as the “dismantling of marriage”, it’s a significant statement that some are viewing as an indication of changing attitudes in conservative Australia. But is this reflective of the wider community? Opponents of same sex marriage are also continuing to debate. On triple j’s ‘Hack’ program the Australian Christian Lobby’s managing director Lyle Shelton stated that same sex marriage could not occur without providing gay couples with unregulated access to reproductive measures: “You cannot provide the benefits of marriage equality to two men unless you’re prepared to provide unfettered access to surrogacy and that means women need to be available to donate eggs, that means carrier wombs need to be available.” On June 3rd the ACL welcomed a report from Essential Research that an online poll conducted between May 27th and 31st with 1,016 respondents found that 59% were in support of same sex marriage, compared to a 72% approval rate in a Crosby|Textor poll released in June last year. Meanwhile, a number of politicians have been voicing their thoughts on the issue. Labor’s Federal Member for Perth, Alannah MacTiernan told OUTinPerth that she stood in support of marriage equality. “I think really we are the last man standing in the English-speaking world and I think it’s about time that we moved where the majority of the community moved some years ago and embraced marriage equality” she said.
After Ireland become the first country to legalise same sex marriage by popular vote, the debate on marriage equality in Australia has reignited. As one of the last remaining English-speaking countries to legally approve same sex marriage, some see Australia as one of the last dominoes to fall in the struggle towards global marriage equality.
Victorian Liberal MP Sarah Henderson said she would support marriage equality, and that if two people wish to commit to a life together under the law, they should have the opportunity. “As an MP driven by a strong sense of compassion, equity and justice, I believe our nation should follow the lead of countries such as the UK, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland and legalise same sex marriage.” As of the end of May, the Coalition have yet to discuss the possibility of a free vote on the issue. With the Greens’ bill also set to be debated later this year, discussion continues to accelerate. Sophie Joske

events With ‘Be Yourself’, how did the idea for the work come about? “Be Yourself” is about the nature of selfhood and it actually began with me having Buddhist meditation sessions at work for the past five years… In those sessions we had a Buddhist monk who was talking to us a lot about the nature of I and the self and de-centering that from our view of the world, so in that question about “What is I?” I began thinking about what is the nature of I from various perspectives. It’s an intriguing topic for dancers to tackle because as dancers you’re so much about the body. I think that’s what was interesting in looking at the nature of “what is the self?” because the body is completely implicit in notions of what the self is, I think for historical reasons we seem to think of the mind as being separate from the body somehow but really, if we look at current neuroscience, emotions and the self and consciousness is all really caught up in our bodies, they’re one and the same thing.
sweat and our lips quiver so certainly the piece broaches that. There’s also an actress involved and throughout the work she’s articulating the most complex and extraordinary physiological language in relation to the biochemistry of emotions and the physiology of emotion. We work with a professor of physiology as well, from Flinders Medical Centre here in Adelaide who assisted me in writing that text. Having said that, somehow we’ve made selfhood this quite surreal and comic and entertaining expression of all of those very complex ideas. Australian Dance Theatre’s ‘Be Yourself’ is at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on June 20 and at the State Theatre Centre in Perth from June 24 – 27. Dan Slater has been bouncing around the globe this year playing gigs in many different countries, the jet set DJ is set land in Perth this month. You’re currently DJing around the USA – what have you been up to? This is my second tour of the US this year, and it’s been CRAZY! I’ve had an awesome time DJing in Miami for Winter Party, Chicago at Hydrate, Palm Springs for White Party, and Los Angeles at FRESH. Before I head back to OZ I’m also DJing for Matinee in Las Vegas which I’m completely pumped for! What tracks are you loving at the moment? Ellie Goulding – Love Me What You Do (Leo Blanco Remix), Nacho Chapado, Ann Shine – Everybody´s Free (Club Anthem Mix) and Aron - No Drama feat. Beth Sacks (Original Mix) Your remix of Paulini’s new track ‘By My Side’ is about to be released, what did you hope to bring to the song in your remix? I love spending time in the studio because it’s a great creative outlet. I originally had a different idea for the song, but the remix went in a different direction. It has an uplifting feel and a good commercial house vibe. Most importantly Paulini loves it and we can’t wait for the release. How was your recent cruise trip? Did you get sea sick? Yes, I was recently DJing on the Atlantis cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong. We sailed up through Thailand and Vietnam and got to see some beautiful places. The parties were great fun too, people went to so much effort every night. I didn’t get sea sick, but on our last night we did sail into a typhoon which made DJing very interesting. Especially when the boat is rocking, and people are moving from one side to the other! When did you last have a wild night out? I had a wild night out in Miami during Winter Party. Ralphi Rosario and Abel who are Rosabel were DJing, and it was definitely a night to remember. Great music, and it was an incredible venue and production. Plus I got a chance to see friends I don’t get to very often. Dan Slater will be at Connections Nightclub on Saturday June 20th Graeme Watson

Lilly Singh’s online moniker ‘Superwoman’ (or ‘IISuperwomanII’, as is styled on YouTube), is by no means an overstatement. The twenty-six year old has a vast following worldwide and she’ll be meeting some of those loyal fans on the world tour of her show ‘A Trip to Unicorn Island’. She chatted to OUTinPerth all the way from her home country of Canada. Singh has visited Australia twice before, and she shared with us what she’s looking forward to about her third visit. “I feel like every single time I go to Australia I have to go see kangaroos. I feel like it’s mandatory. I can come ten times and all ten times I’ll go see them. Oh! And also eat Tim Tams.” she said. ‘A Trip to Unicorn Island’ is the first live comedy show that Singh is performing internationally. She told us what inspired the show and its evocative title. “Unicorn Island is a pseudonym for my happy place. Essentially this show is a trip to my happy place that lives in my brain and heart.” she said. “The concept for Unicorn Island is that everybody has their own, and everyone has their own happy place and things that make them happy so mine looks like there’s cupcakes everywhere, there’s lots of popcorn, possibly shooting out of a volcano. There’s lots of free food and sunshine and lots of cute possums. “It’s very adult and mature as you can see.” she laughed. Singh’s YouTube videos are typically comedy-based, featuring herself playing a number of characters including a cartoonish version of her Indian parents. Most fans will be familiar with Singh collaborating, acting or speaking her mind in a short video format. She explained what she had in store with her stage show. “There’ll be comedy, there’ll be inspiration, there’ll be music, there’ll be dancing, there will be my parents out there for the first ever time that they’ve been on live. I think more than anything there’s a really strong message and connection. From beginning to end I actually am taking the audience on a journey through my life and to my happy place and my experiences. So, I think that’s what I want people to take away the most.” Singh’s trademark positivity with a dash of sarcasm has made her immensely popular online. She’s got over 5 and a half million subscribers, currently outweighing the population of Norway. Singh herself seemed unaware that her online popularity had earned her enough supporters to fill a Scandanavian nation. “Oh my God, I’m impressed with myself!” she exclaimed. Having a country’s worth of subscribers wasn’t something she could have possibly conceived of when she posted her first YouTube video as Superwoman. “When I started making YouTube videos I had finished my psychology degree and I had been on a year off, literally to figure out what I wanted to do in life and I had no clue by the end of that year. So I started to apply for my Masters because my dad was really adamant about that. And then I posted a few videos and was like ‘No, you know what? This is what I’m going to do.’ I’m going to at least try and do my best at something.”
I think every single person that is openly gay is doing something wonderful for the world, and for humanity in general.
It’s about having your brain moving around. Otherwise, to be honest if I’m really stumped for an idea I’ll ask the people who watch them. I’ll be like ‘Hey guys, what do you want me to do today?’ It’s a combination of my own ideas and the ideas of my audience.” Singh’s interaction with her audience is an integral part of what she does, and she’s found that her LGBT fans in particular connect with her message of positivity and self-acceptance. She’s also collaborated with a number of well-known queer YouTubers including Hannah Hart and Connor Franta. When asked if she had a particular message for her LGBT fans, Singh was reflective. “I think genuinely if I was to answer that question it would be that they are some of the strongest people I know. I think parts of the world are not ready for humanity to get along and I think it’s very tough, and then also at the same time beautiful and awesome that people like that exist. I really mean that. Like I said, I have a lot of friends that experience a lot of things and I think every single person that is openly gay is doing something wonderful for the world, and for humanity in general. Or even who are not openly but just who really want to find themselves, I think everything about that is just beautiful.” Lilly Singh’s ‘A Trip to Unicorn Island’ will be at the Astor Theatre on June 7th. Tickets available from www.lillysinghtour.com Sophie Joske
It’s a decision that paid off. As well as touring internationally, Singh also posts two videos a week. She explained how she manages to keep thinking of new ideas after more than four years in online showbusiness. “I always have my thinking cap on, so I can be out with my friends, and something will happen and I’ll be like ‘Oh my God, totally gonna put that in a video.’

Manchester might not be high on many people’s list but if you’re flying all the way to London, a short train trip can take you to the United Kingdom’s second biggest city where you can easily spend a few relaxing days shopping, clubbing and visiting museums and art galleries. The Northern quarter is filled with retro fashion stores, well curated op-shops, and some truly amazing record stores. The city’s hipster suburb is filled with great places to eat from long established, and very affordable curry houses to creatively named new establishments offering pulled pork and macaroni cheese sandwiches. Music is a big part of Manchester’s history, this is the home of The Smiths, New Order, Happy Mondays and Take That originated from the city as well! Spending some time in the city’s bars and music venues is an essential part of any trip. Manchester has a vibrant gay scene with the popular Canal street gay village offering a multitude of gay bars and clubs to visit. Spread over two blocks Canal Street offers a variety of bars, restaurants and hangouts. More than one evening can be lost to bar
hopping from one venue to the next. There’s well over 20 different LGBTIQ spots to visit. For many LGBTIQ people Manchester has been brought to life through the creative work of Russell T Davies. In the late ‘90s Davies used his native Manchester and Canal Street as the setting for the original British version of ‘Queer as Folk’ and recently he’s used the city as a backdrop for his dual series ‘Cucumber’ and ‘Banana’. While there actually is no club Babylon on Canal Street, the bars and clubs are much smaller than the fictional mega-club, you can however visit the building with was used as the exterior of Babylon in the TV series. Romare Projections Released on the ever reliable Ninja Tunes label this album is a fantastic collection of dance tunes sampling soulful vocals that would sound great on the dance floor or to listen it through headphones while lying in a beanbag. Opening up with the Nina Simone sampling ‘Nina’s Charm’ this album has 12 great tunes. ‘Jimmy’s Lament’ features trip-hop beats, tinkling pianos and blurry vocal grabs, while ‘Loverman’ is more upfront and hypnotic sound matched with a blues cry of ‘Baby, Baby, Baby’. Closing track ‘La Petite Mort’ is a minor opus of dub beats and woozy vocals.–Graeme Watson
Hot Chip Why Make Sense?
Daniel Johns Talk
‘Why Make Sense’, Hot Chip’s sixth studio album brings you a healthy serving of what Hot Chip does best: Hot Chip. This album seemingly aims to bring some of the bands live flavour to the record, which has culminated as a balance of electronic and analogue instrumentation throughout the album, particularly on the titular ‘Why Make Sense’, which strikes that balance perfectly with raw, post-punk inspired drums and sharp melodic digital tones. A natural progression for the band that is sure to sate the appetites of fans - Leigh Hill
Daniel Johns’ ‘Talk’ marks the first music from the Silverchair front man in 8 years, and it shows. ‘Talk’ is very much an R&B album, sprinkled with upbeat poppy treats throughout – a massive divergence from his usual guitar-heavy rock. ‘Cool On Fire’, John’s latest single is a collaboration with Lorde producer in which Johns’ soft, vocals float effortlessly over the bouncy contemporary pop beat. ‘Talk’ is an all new sound for Johns’, which has been executed with the deft touch of a professional. Unexpectedly upbeat! - Leigh Hill
Koi Child – Black Panda amazingly cool psychedelic hip hop Hard Tom – You Made the World Go Round (Dub) a mellow mix of woozy beats and muffled electronica Jonte Moaning – Zen Zen Daijubou (Instrumental) Beyonce’s choreographer brings a beat that you can’t help but dance to Double Duchess – Bullshit this song tells it like it is, fierce shade throwing realness extreme Hiatus Kaiyote – Shaolin Monk Motherfunk jazz filled funk Avan Lava – Wanna Live queer camp disco tune with catch vocals Melanie Biasio – I’m Going to Leave You (Cinematic Orchestra Remix) stark spacious epic tune Diavolo Di un Disco (DJ Fatt Berger and DJ Grillo Wiener’s Emosjonelle Runkering Mix) this track starts off with some unusual beats before developing into a crazy disco jam Tom Aspaul – Indiana Kylie took this track, renamed and it included it on her last album – interesting to hear the original Ramus Faber featuring Frida Sundemo – Hideaway sweet pop tune with positive vibes Giovanni Truppi – Stai Andando Bene Giovanni because Italian rock doesn’t get enough exposure – it sounds like 80s no post punk Renato Zero – Mi Vendo some Italian disco? Roisin Murphy – Exploitation clocking in a nine minutes this disco jam is one of the many great tracks on her new album.
Amani Consort Dawn After Dark Local band Amani Consort have released their first album and it’s exceptionally good. Subtly opening up with the instrumental ‘After Dark’ the laid back jazz funk collective set the mood for an album of classic soulful sounds. If you love acid jazz acts like Digable Planets, Young Disciples or later acts like Jill Scott – you’ll really appreciate this album. Aysha Amani has a great soulful voice and serious attitude giving the songs a hip-hop edge. Highlights on the album include ‘Easy’, the gentle ‘I’m Leaving You’, the warm buzz of ‘Memories’ and slow groove ‘Love Addiction’ – Graeme Watson
Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons Message from the Other Side Acclaimed DJ Damian Lazarus is back with his second album of original material, he’s also got 13 mix albums under his belt. This is epic and beautiful, a gorgeous mashup of different styles. Epic strings, weird bleeps, soulful vocals and gentle house beats – it sound like an odd combination but it works so well. ‘Vermillion’ is a laid back house track, but then suddenly the next song ‘Amber Palace’ is a psychedelic world music moment, later ‘We Will Return’ is a subtle club anthem. It’s an intriguingly interesting album. ’ – Graeme Watson
Bananarama Megarama – The Mixes Can you ever have too much Bananarama? A few years back they reissued all of Bananarama’s early albums with additional b-sides, mixes and unreleased tracks. Keren and Sara were fairly vocally unhappy about the barrel scraping. Now here’s another collection featuring 3 CDs with 36 tracks, 14 of them previously unreleased and while this is clearly a collection for the uber-fan, it’s got some interesting moments. I Heard a Rumour (Corporation of Bananarama) gives the track a whole new musical bed while retaining the vocals, it becomes a ‘80s acid house track with a piano rift. Also in a similar vein, ‘Na Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him
Sydney producer Elizabeth Rose has released a song that aims to speak out on marriage equality. Rose’s track ‘Division’ debuted on triple j this morning. Entitled ‘Division’, it is a direct statement about marriage equality in Australia. Following Ireland’s historic referendum last week, Australia is one of the only Englishspeaking countries that does not recognise same sex marriage, and politicians and artists alike are raising discussion as to why it’s taking us so long. “Australia is tipped as the ‘lucky’ country, but reflecting upon what we stand for, I’m not sure that we are all that we’re cracked up to be. Our peers fall victim to acts of discrimination and are denied the right to equality. For a country that boasts of multi-culturalism and acceptance, why aren’t we accepting of this?” Rose said in a statement.
Goodbye) (The ’88 Acid Remix) sounds like S-Express. The ‘House Dub’ version of ‘Love in the First Degree’ is filled with serious bass and chopped up vocals. Later semi-hit ‘Movin’ On’ has the previously unreleased ‘Snappin Mix’ which has a great extended intro, while the ‘Thumpin’ Mix’ gives a more pop take on the tune. Stock, Aitken, Waterman’s first 12inch remix of ‘Venus’ was rejected but here it is – and it’s not bad. ‘Trippin’ on Your Love’ (The Loveable Love-Dove Caper) sees Farley and Heller take the track into a truly psychedelic space. If you’d like to relive the ’80s (and a little bit of the ’90s) you can’t go wrong with three CD’s of Banananarama remixes. Oddly, at first glance the album has an almost identical cover to Dannii Minogue’s ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation.
“Less than a week ago Ireland became the nineteenth country to allow same sex marriage, they join the Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, France, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Spain and the U.K. We are moving towards this significant moment in Australian history and I urge people to accept and embrace this need for equality in our country.” Until June 17th, ‘Division’ will be available via Rose’s website on a pay-as-you-choose basis with profits going towards Australian Marriage Equality. Mad Max: Fury Road
This brilliant debut film by Australian director Ariel Kleinman takes place in a decaying Eastern European town. Gregori (Vincent Cassel) gives shelter to a young mother and her newborn son who are alone in the world and the film starts when the son, Alexander (a mesmerising Jeremy Chabriel), has just turned 11 years of age. Over the years, Vincent has given shelter to many homeless women and their babies who now live in his sheltered compound away from the rest of the town. The narrative slowly unfolds and a dark undercurrent emerges. Alexander begins to question his life and his role as a ‘resistance fighter’. As Alexander’s next birthday approaches, his mother gives birth to another boy. Also another 11 year old boy joins the group and questions the slaughter of a chicken in the yard. Tension mounts as Alexander begins to think for himself and quietly challenge the menacing patriarch Gregori.
George Miller’s first highly successful Mad Max film was in 1979 and the actionpacked ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ brings a new generation to the post-apocalyptic world of fire and blood. Max (Tom Hardy) reluctantly teams up with Furiosa (Charize Theron) as they escape from the Citadel and the wrath of leader Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne who was the villain in the original Mad Max). The pursuit across the dusty wastelands (filmed in Namibia because of unseasonable rains in Central Australia) occupies the whole 2 hour film. Oscar-winning cinematographer John Seale came out of retirement to capture the adrenaline-pumping stunts and digital effects and dialogue is kept to a minimum. There’s barely room for the audience to breathe as the war on wheels is kept pumping by drummers and even a maniacal electric guitar player. The degenerate characters are even more degenerate and the ideology more decrepit in this testosterone-fuelled world. It’s great stuff.

Walking the Camino (pg) The Duke of Burgundy (ma) Directed by Lydia B. Smith
Directed by Peter Strickland
People have been walking the Camino for over 1200 years and after the ancient pilgrim pathway transformed her life in 2008, Lydia B. Smith decided to focus on six walkers in her documentary. These people from diverse backgrounds talk about their motivations and the discoveries they make on the 500 mile (nearly 800km) trek. The audience gets to know them as the picture postcard landscape allows them to discover an expanded universe and they battle more immediate problems such as heavy packs, doubt, blisters, injury, rain, heat and their own prejudices. It is hard going but there’s comradeship among the walkers and villagers along the way welcome the walkers with food and shelter for the night. One walker commented that you begin the walk as a tourist and end as a pilgrim. This is a great insight into one of the most challenging things you can put on your bucket list.
Lesbians Evelyn (Chiara D’ Anna) and Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen from the cult TV series ‘Borgen’) live in a sumptuous house in the English countryside. It appears to be the 1970s and at first it seems that Evelyn is a maid to the demanding Cynthia, but the two entomologists are in a relationship. With have a study full of mounted butterflies and moths, symbolism abounds as they play their daily games of subservience and dominance. Lingering sensual cinematography brings the audience into their elaborate costume drama while the power shifts between the lovers and it is difficult to work out who is actually in control. Evelyn seems to want to push the boundaries of their sexual games into more risqué territory while Cynthia seems to be struggling with the demands of being a dominatrix. Described as erotic and neurotic, The Duke of Burgundy is part of the Revelation Film Festival.

Have you ever asked yourself the question: do I sound gay? Documentary filmmaker David Thorpe found himself pondering that question and it sent him off on a filmmaking journey of discovery. Tell me, how did your journey on this documentary begin? It began when I broke up with a boyfriend and started feeling not so great about myself as people often do when they get dumped and I started to get super self-conscious about sounding gay and I found that really disconcerting because I was out of the closet for two decades and here I was still feeling anxious about giving myself away through my voice and that realization set me on the road to make the film. For as much as people can worry about sounding gay, I guess there are people who also worry about not sounding gay? It is true in some cases it goes in the other direction, I have met a number of gay men who wished that they had more gay sounding voices so that they would avoid awkward situations where people think they’re straight – we delve into that in the movie as well. What kind of things do you discover in your journey through the film in trying not to sound gay? For me it was extremely interesting to find out that men and women speak differently and that’s not just the pitch of their voices but actually on a level, very small speech sounds and that was something I really didn’t expect and that helps me understand the gay voice, the stereotype of the gay voice, better.
What I really didn’t expect was to find so many other gay men who also were keenly aware of how gay or not gay they sounded and how big a role played in how people censored themselves because it’s something, as a community, I don’t think we talk about with any frequency and I found out that one of my best friends for the last fifteen years has always had a lot of anxiety about sounding gay. Do you think it’s ever something we use to our advantage? Do we ever gay it up a bit? Most of us code-switch, which is to say we subtly change our voices according to who we’re talking to or situations we are in. One of the questions the film asks is when are we codeswitching? And when are we hiding and suppressing who we really are because of internalized or actual homophobia? So that’s a funny question to ask but it definitely has a more serious side. Have you looked at how it works cross-culturally, is it just a western thing? I did explore the question of sounding gay across cultures and there hasn’t been a lot of study on the subject. People are not throwing a lot of money at finding out. Most of the people I spoke to were in agreement that what sounds gay is what sounds feminine and that’s generally true across cultures. The specifics of that may be different but that’s the basic principle of a man who sounds gay.
Do you think it works for gay women? The linguistic research applies equally to women as it does to men, there’s certainly a stereotype about lesbian women sounding more masculine, but I didn’t feel there was so much of a social stigma to sounding gay to most lesbians. I spoke to many women and many researchers and I didn’t find as much of a widespread stigma when it comes to voice, but there’s still plenty of stigma to go around. When you do a film around the voice and linguistics, does it make you more conscious of how you speak? Part of my journey has been getting comfortable with my voice and I do that in a whole bunch of different ways in the film, but the film isn’t just a film, it’s a real life growing experience for me and I’m one thousand percent more comfortable with how I sound and who I am. ‘Do I Sound Gay?’ is screening next month at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival. “No one should ever have to be forced to come out. No one’s ever asked me why I’m straight.” Julia Zemiro, Australia’s queen of Eurovision and former host of RockWiz, is returning to the ABC this month with a brand new season of ‘Home Delivery’. In its third season, this unique interview program will be venturing into the childhood homes, schools and important places of not only beloved comedians but also some of Australia’s best loved personalities who’ve made a name for themselves in the public eye. Media trailblazer Ita Buttrose, chef Matt Moran and host of ‘7.30’ Leigh Sales are just a few of Zemiro’s distinguished guests. Zemiro explained to OUTinPerth why the show decided to expand its repertoire in the new season. “I think we were just curious. Curious to see who else we might like to talk to.” she said. “I think comedians in general are pretty good at telling stories, even the horror stories of when they were young and telling them to you in a way because they’ve used it in their stand up material, they’ve had a bit of a go at themselves. So when I bring it up for them again it’s not too traumatic, you know. They’ve got ways to talk about it. But really anyone who’s in the public eye, no matter what they do, they’ve had to tell stories before.”
In each episode of ‘Home Delivery’, Zemiro takes her guest on a journey through their early years, visiting the places they once called home. It’s often highly personal and can reveal a new side to the subject of the episode. This was especially true for Olympic champion Ian Thorpe, Zemiro’s first guest of the season, who was interviewed following his highly public discussion of his sexuality with Michael Parkinson. “No one should ever have to be forced to come out. No one’s ever asked me why I’m straight, or if I’m straight… It’s just bullshit. I think he was 16 when journalists, not even friends were asking him that question. It’s none of their business. So I suppose that interview with Parkinson was about him doing it on his own terms. And so a year later we were interested to see where he was at and he looks great, he sounds great and he’s really at ease with himself and his new life.” Another of Zemiro’s guests this season is Matt Lucas of ‘Little Britain’, who recalled a happy childhood despite losing his hair at an early age due to alopecia. Zemiro recalled when their conversation got philosophical. “He said
‘You realise that growing up is about realising that the world isn’t what you imagined it was as a child.’ You know, and it’s a catch 22 because parents want to give their children the best childhood possible but then part of leaving childhood and getting to adulthood is ‘Oh my God, it isn’t beautiful, it is hard, it is difficult.’ I suppose that’s the journey, and how do you get through it? We’ve all got to get through it.’” ‘Home Delivery’ is on the ABC on Wednesdays at 9pm. Sophie Joske
Home Grown Champions Jebediah are one of Perth’s most successful bands. While they’ve recently found themselves making it onto every online list of underrated Australian bands of the 1990s, for many, the fact that they’re celebrating twenty years of making music together is something of a reality check. For bass player Vanessa Thornton and lead guitarist Chris Daymond, the anniversary is as good an excuse as any to go on tour.
“It’s a convenient year to sort of put a spotlight on. A double decade, but it’s probably in lots of ways a good excuse to l ook back on the fact you’ve come this far. At the same time being together for 18 years was pretty special. Or 19, I think.” Daymond said. To celebrate their double decade, Jebediah are releasing a compilation entitled ‘TWENTY’, compiling their most-loved tracks from their five albums. They’ll also be touring around the country, where as well as playing recent favourites like ‘She’s Like a Comet’, they’ll also be playing their explosive debut album ‘Slightly Odway’ in its entirety. Thornton explained the decision. “It is referenced as being part of the popular soundtrack to the alternative ‘90s or whatever. Factual wise it’s our biggest selling album, and it’s the one that gave us the opportunity to be a band that continued. Not that we wouldn’t have done it otherwise if we had never had made that record, but you know, the fact is that it’s there and we’re not ashamed of it.”
According to Thornton, it allows the set to have a bit more breathing room. “If we can just get the Odway thing in one set and do the whole thing then in the first set we’ve just got a bit more scope to give a bit more airtime to other songs.” “You can play a set without people yelling out ‘Leaving Home!’. From go to woah. Even after you’ve played ‘Leaving Home’. “Play leaving home!” “We played it.” “Play it again!” she laughed. The band have made their way onto a number of pop culture list articles and retrospectives about Australian ‘90s music. While the band are aware that ‘Slightly Odway’ has a place in the hearts of many, it’s not something they’re used to. “It seemed kind of like a new phenomenon to me, I don’t think we’re a critical darling in any way. Previously we haven’t made lists… This year has been a change in that, it seems.” Jebediah’s longevity is unsurprising when Daymond explains their laid back approach to making music. “I think when we get together as a group it seems very natural, the way we interact. And the result of that interaction musically is what our music is, so nobody
tells anyone else what to play or what to do, and I don’t think that’ll change.” Both Daymond and Thornton are still Perthbased, which is uncommon for those in the creative industry who’ve tasted success. When asked if they think the city is supportive of musicians, they are enthusiastic. “I definitely think so. I feel like it always has been.” Thornton said. Daymond concurred: “I feel it as well. I think anyone that labels Perth as dullsville or whatever is just a reflection of themselves. More than anything, so. It’s as simple as that to me. There’s plenty going on and if you want to be involved you just make that decision and get into it.” The suggestion of a forty year anniversary tour is met with laughter. “That’d be hilarious.” Daymond said. Thornton chimed in; “I think that’s how much we would have laughed if twenty years ago someone would’ve said twenty years. I would’ve said ‘you’re crazy’.” Jebediah will be playing at the Astor Theatre from June 26th-28th. Tickets available from Ticketek Sophie Joske
