MORE COMMITTED THAN EVER Today as we were working on this July 2015 edition of OUTinPerth we were reflecting on the massive amount of discussion about marriage equality currently before us. Facebook is awash with rainbow profile pictures, over 26 million of them. We’d not yet stopped riding the wave of enthusiasm that the Irish referendum brought, when more encouraging news has come from the USA where the Supreme Court has made a final decision. Watching President Obama’s speech live on Friday night was inspiring. President Obama said the Supreme Court’s decision had made America a little bit better, but acknowledged that it was the countless activists who had fought for decades to make the world better. As the President of the USA said; “…it’s the consequence of the countless small acts of courage of millions of people, across decades, who stood up, who came out, who talked to parents. Parents who loved their children no matter what. Folks who were willing to endure bullying and taunts, and stayed strong, and came to believe in themselves and who they were. And slowly made an entire country realise that love is love.” Here in Perth we’re amazed by the response to the call out for the marriage rally on Sunday July 5th. As of this evening over 15,000 people have voiced their support for marriage equality. This afternoon the news came that a cross party bill will be put forward in the next parliamentary session. Almost immediately came the news that a spokesman for our Prime Minister was already saying that the private members bill would unlikely make it to a vote or be discussed in the coalition party room meetings.

If even half of the 15,000 people expected at Sunday’s rally turn up it will be a massive show of wide spread community support for marriage equality. And while we may be asked to ‘take a breather’ and wait for the greatly rumoured silent majority, I can’t help but hear the words of the writer Aaron Sorkin. “Decisions are made by those who show up.” The call is loud and clear, the polls show over 50% support in every single age demographic. The signs that there is a clear majority on this issue are many. As the Irish Health Minister Leo Varadkar said as the counted the votes in Ireland. “People from the LGBT community in Ireland are a minority. But with our parents, our families, or friends and co-workers and colleagues, we’re a majority.” Front and centre we have our Prime Minister ignoring the people. Telling us it would be an issue for the party room before the election and then saying it wouldn’t be discussed when the issue arose. Teasing us a nation about how the issue of marriage should be owned by the whole parliament, but then fragrantly dismissing cross party support when it appears. Our Prime Minister is an embarrassment. Not because of his personal strong views against marriage equality, but because of his repetitive dismissal of ours, the majority of Australians. Who Can It Be Now? Q: Who’s an Australian television presenter and award winning actor, who we dearly love, that can often be found escorting celebrities back to their childhood homes and primary schools? Who was once mistaken by the editor of OUTinPerth as a waitress when she was hosting an awards ceremony at the St Kilda Short Film Festival? Who does a stellar job bringing the magic of Eurovision to a nation and can also do a damn good impression of a meercat? Who will always be the Queen of the Gershwin Room at the Espy Hotel as she fronts the brilliant TV show Rock Wiz? A: Julia Zemiro. We’re really sorry we accidently described you as the “former” host of RockWiz back in issue 167 – we’re also sorry about placing that drinks order too

This month we’ve got stacks of CDs to giveaway including new releases from Giorgio Moroder, Leon Bridges, Hillary Duff, Everything Everything, Little Sea, John Farnham and Olivia Newton John and Miguel. Plus there’s an awesome tribute album to Nina Simone and the debut album from Tori Kelly. We’ve got tickets to Judith Lucy’s show and lots of other fun things.

We keep hearing that there is an enormous silent majority who have yet to be consulted on this issue, that people in the bush, and migrants, and older Australians, haven’t had a chance to speak about this issue.

WA-born John O’Hara is bringing his show, ‘Dedications’ to Perth for three nights from August 20-22. Inspired by Australia’s late night radio programs, O’Hara performs classic love songs from Whitney Houston, Aerosmith, Lionel Ritchie, Michael Bolton, Kiss, Cyndi Lauper, Leonard Cohen and others. The show had its world premiere recently at the 2015 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. OUTinPerth challenged John to come up with his ten best late night dedications, but he couldn’t narrow it down to just ten – so here’s John’s eleven picks.

ARIA award-winning singer-songwriter Josh Pyke is teaming up with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for one special evening at the Perth Concert Hall. Led by Assistant Conductor Christopher Dragon, Pyke and WASO will recite fully orchestrated versions of songs from across his four studio albums. Pyke recently delved into orchestrating when he made his debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in April. Ten composers from across the country were chosen by the SSO to re-arrange Pyke’s work, including Western Australians Lachlan Skipworth and Jared Yapp.

“I believe songs are there to be experimented with, and that any version is just that, a version amongst many,” Pyke said. “My recorded versions of the songs are only moments in time, and I’m hoping the emerging composers will bring their own moments to these songs.” Josh Pyke and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Perth Concert Hall on Friday 24 July. Judith Lucy is coming to town with her new comedy show, her first solo show since 2012. The popular comedian is set to face a huge homecoming audience when she plays the Perth Concert Hall. Your show is called “Ask No Questions Of The Moth”, is the moth a usual oracle for you to be consulting? If only! If only I had some enormous dead moth that I kept somewhere and when I was experiencing doubt I could go to it. The bottom line is, underneath the many, many, cheap gags that are in the show, there is a kind of theme of change and impermanence so I thought let’s try and come up with a title that sort of captures that but is also a bit ridiculous. So I just sort of said that into my little old computer, thinking that I’d wind up with some obscure Buddhist quote but instead I wound up with a quote from a 12th century Sufi mystic poem called “Conference of the Birds”, believe it or not! The whole quote is actually; “I have no questions of my coming or passing away, the whole thing happened quicker than a breath, ask no questions of the moth.” And look, as luck would have it – Sam Simmons and I have the same manager and Sam did a show for the ABC a few years ago which had a recurring sketch where Suzie Porter and Gary Sweet were dressed as moths, so my manager when he heard the title simply said “Hey, we’ve still got the moth outfits, do you want to whack one of those on for the poster?” so… that’s the story. Twenty plus years into your career, is a moth the most ridiculous thing you’ve dressed as? Jesus, I doubt it. I’ve dressed up as some pretty ridiculous things. I remember on The Late Show, Mick Molloy and I did a sketch where we dressed up as Christopher Atkins and Brooke Shields from Endless Love. Left to my own devices, when I first started doing stand-up comedy, gosh, some of my early gigs were not only just bad but totally mystifying and for my first ever gig I twirled a large cabana sausage above my head and pretended it was a rattlesnake but I did once appear on stage wearing nothing but a green garbage bag and pointy rubber ears and I would so love to tell you that I was on drugs when I did that but I wasn’t. I can’t even explain it. The moth is just the tip of the iceberg, but at least it’s a decent costume.

You mentioned The Late Show… I’ve noticed you can almost divide people now into people who saw The Late Show and people who have no idea what it is., younger people. Well what I find even more extraordinary is that sometimes young people will come up to me and say ‘I was a fan of The Late Show’ and I’ll go ‘Well, were you three when it was on?’ and they’ll say they wound up watching it later in life on DVD. Jeez that was a good move, thank God I did that programme. I am still amazed and delighted that people remember it at all. I’m sure you’re right of course, if you’re above a certain age you’re more likely to remember it. In the days when people used to stay in to watch a television program, doesn’t that seem like a long time ago? Catch Judith Lucy at the Perth Concert Hall on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July. So what is PrEP? Pre-exposure prophylaxis – PrEP, is a type of medication that can be taken every day to help in reducing the risk of acquiring HIV. This medication, called Truvada – Emtricitabine and Tenofovir, is currently used in Australia to help treat HIV infection. Studies are increasingly showing that when used properly, PrEP can be very effective in reducing the risk of acquiring HIV Who might benefit from using PrEP? The CDC in United States recommends the use of PrEP by people who are HIV-Negative and are at substantial risk of HIV infection, including; • Gay and other homosexually active men who have anal sex without a condom; • Men who share injecting equipment, or; • M en who are in a relationship with an HIV positive person who doesn’t have an undetectable viral load. Is PrEP safe? PrEP is considered safe when taken correctly and properly monitored by a medical professional. However, as with all medications, PrEP can have side effects. Common side effects include headaches, nausea, tiredness and abdominal pain, although these will usually go away on their own. There have been no serious side effects observed during clinical trials studying PrEP. Is PrEP available in Australia? Truvada is still not approved by the Therapeutics Goods Association (TGA) to prevent HIV infection for HIV negative guys. Sydney has the PRELUDE Study, and Melbourne has the VICPREP Study, where guys can access low cost or free PrEP as part of demonstration trials – unfortunately, Perth men can’t access these trials. Where can I access PrEP in Perth? Perth men can get access to PrEP only through Doctors who are willing to prescribe Truvada™ for you under what is known as an “off label” prescription. This refers to a drug that is prescribed for a condition for which it does not have TGA approval. However, not every doctor has a sound knowledge of this medication and particularly not about its use as PrEP. The good news is… there are now some experienced doctors in Perth who can prescribe PrEP ‘off label’. They are able to make sure you get the right support and information required to safely take PrEP. For more information on PrEP or to receive a referral please contact M Clinic on 9227 0734 or info@mclinic.org.au or visit www.mclinic.org.au/fact-sheets/PrEP Justin Manuel

PrideFEST 2015 will have the theme of ‘Silver City’ as Pride Western Australia Incorporated celebrate their 25th anniversary. Perth’s annual Pride festival will run from Friday 6th – Sunday 22nd of November and will feature more than 100 arts, culture and community events. The Pride parade will be on Saturday 21st November and the Urban Orchard party that was introduced in 2014 will return. The theme for this year’s festival will be ‘Silver City’ marking the organisations 25th anniversary celebrations and the contributions made to the Western Australian arts and culture landscape by WA’s lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and queer community over the last quarter of a century. The theme is a symbol of the special and historic links that inner city Perth has with the Pride community and the valuable support that has been given by the City of Perth, City of Vincent and the growing relationship Pride Western Australia Incorporated has with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority. Andrew Barker, President of Pride WA said he expected this year’s festival to be the most vibrant yet. “We’re really excited to launch this theme and start preparing for Pride WA’s biggest and most vibrant festival program yet.” Mr Barker said in a statement, “Twenty five years is definitely worth celebrating , so we’re encouraging everyone to join us and help turn the city ‘fabulously’ silver!”

news a review of the chaplaincy program in two years’ time to assess whether there’s actually any formal complaints or whether it’s just conjectural concern, but if you want to have counsellors in schools I think we should separate the two. The balance of religious freedom, obviously it comes up in the chaplaincy debate, and the marriage equality debate. On the ABC’s ‘Q&A’ recently someone asked if they had a business, can they discriminate, to most people that would seem a very clear “No, you can’t”.

The Human Rights Commission has revealed the results of its investigation of issues facing LGBTIQ people in Australia in an extensive report entitled ‘Resilient Individuals: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex Rights 2015’. Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson conducted the research as a means to identify the “many other systemic issues and human rights challenges that urgently need to be addressed” in the LGBTI community and ensure these issues are made visible to the wider community and seek reform to alleviate discrimination.

Human rights are not about forcing people to act against their conscience, so my view, and the way we’ve addressed it in the report, because it is a real concern for people of religious conviction or faith, is that they’ll be forced to act against their conscience and do things they don’t agree with. We often hear, especially in the marriage debate, that there is no discrimination against gay and lesbian people in Australia, but your report would suggest that, on the ground, there is still a significant amount. The report goes through a survey and publishes the data of that survey which shows that about 70% of people say they’ve faced some form of bullying, harassment or violence on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status, as well as a significant number of people who have faced some form of social exclusion or lack of access to basic services.

You’ve been around Australia talking to LGBTIQ people, is there a difference in what people’s stories were?

That would be throughout their lifetime, so we have to acknowledge that hopefully things are slowly getting better, but there’s still a way to go. At least because, things like antidiscrimination laws cover issues like sexual orientation in some states, but not gender identity or intersex status and there’s also still state sanctioned discrimination in the marriage act which is a headline issue and if you go to Queensland there’s still unequal age of consent between heterosexual and homosexual sex.

Yes there was a difference in the stories, of course if you go into inner city areas especially on the Eastern sea board you get stories that are very different from regional, rural and remote communities, particularly when you’re dealing with intersections of other forms of social prejudice, say for instance, Aboriginal Australians, but the fundamental themes were consistent.

The report does touch on some of the more controversial elements of LGBTI rights, the Chaplaincy program is often in the news. There’s quite a few stories coming from youth saying they don’t feel comfortable approaching chaplains. Do you have a take on whether that should be opened up to secular workers as well?

The need for the law to treat everybody equally, to make sure people are able to access basic services such as health and education and to make sure there is no discrimination or gaps in knowledge from social service workers to provide for people with LGBTI needs.

I think if you’re going to have a discussion about the need for secular social service workers or counsellors then that should be held entirely different to chaplains. They fulfil a very different pastoral role, I accept that people have concerns about those chaplains and whether they’re open and accessible to LGBTI youth and I’ve heard many stories about that. What we’d recommend is

Commissioner Tim Wilson spoke to OUTinPerth about what he learned through the consultation.

Marriage Equality Rally in Perth’s Russell Square

I think it’s a more interesting discussion when you get to, say, a civil celebrant who might have a private religious conviction and whether they should have to marry a same-sex couple and is it fair to stop somebody becoming a civil celebrant because they have that religious conviction. There can be discrimination then. Head online to www.outinperth.com to read our full discussion with Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson. Graeme Watson

Most of the marriage equality rallies and marches in Perth have been organised by local group activist group Equal Love, but this event is being created by Get Up! and Australian Marriage Equality.

“They have a ripple effect, in the last few weeks we’ve seem MP after MP come out and switch their position to support marriage equality and it’s because people got in touch with them and explained why it matters to them.

Sally Rugg, Human Rights Campaigner at Get Up! told OUTinPerth that the organisation has been getting great turnouts to its events in other states and is looking forward to the Perth rally. Rugg said people have shown that marriage equality is an issue that they want addressed.

“Its common knowledge that the majority of people support marriage equality, but people getting in touch with their elected representatives lets them know that we want it now.”

“They’ve been fantastic.” Ms Rugg said. “The rally in Canberra yesterday was absolutely beautiful with over 4000 people. We’re hoping that Perth will be even bigger.” Ms Rugg said that while some Western Australian politicians were great supporters of marriage equality there were many other who had not declared their position on the issue.

July 2015

This is precisely the point, discrimination is a funny word we use in our society because we use it always in a negative sense when in fact we all discriminate regularly, and there can be entirely justifiable reasons for doing so and some other things that are part of our freedoms may be unjust, and this is why I want to get to the nub of the point and the nub of the issue, I don’t really accept that a baker who doesn’t want to bake a cake for a marriage between a same-sex couple is really a violation of their religious beliefs, fact is they don’t endorse all weddings they’ve ever made a cake for.

“There’s quite a way to go in WA with getting the support of MPs.” Ms Rugg said, highlighting that effective rallies and people contacting politicians gets attention.

Over the last few weeks GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality have staged successful rallies in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

OUTinPerth

If you look at this as a broader issue though, would it be okay to say you could discriminate against race or gender or age based on a religious belief?

GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality have announced a major rally in Perth to support marriage equality. The rally will be held on Sunday July 5th at 1pm at Russell Square.

“There’s a real appetite for it at the moment.” Ms Rugg said. “There’s a real hunger for it. Since the Irish referendum, Australia is the last English speaking developed country without equal rights. I think people have just had enough of waiting, and this momentum is really exciting!”

10

There are limits, and we’re going to be setting up a religious freedom round table to be talking about the broad issues that affect religious freedom in Australia, because this is one issue but it’s obviously not the sole issue, to try and have a proper engagement and get to the bottom of what it is people don’t want to do, and then see if we can craft or propose solutions that respect the basic and equal treatment in law for LGBTI Australians while also making sure the religious freedom be preserved. I’m more interested in finding a solution that zero sum arguments.

According to Facebook, over 15,000 people are set to attend the rally on July 5th, forcing GetUp! to move the event from Northbridge Piazza, where it was originally planned for, to the much larger Russell Square. “It shows the overwhelming support for marriage equality from the people of Perth”, Sally Rugg told OUTinPerth, “This is no longer an issue mostly fought by the LGBT community – we’re seeing straight allies like grandparents, conservative politicians, faith leaders and people from the business community join the campaign for equal marriage rights.” “The sun will be shining, people from all over will be making their way into Northbridge to call for equality. Sunday looks set to be a wonderful day for Perth.” Image: File photo

Ready for a Close Up? Alex Cearns professional life is one filled with unpredictability. The photographer who specialises in capturing images of animals both in the wild and in the studio shares that she’s never sure who will be coming through her door next.

Is not like other cafés in Maylands. The Pet Lover’s Café has all the elements of regular coffee haunts – great coffee, snacks and a relaxed atmosphere, but journey deeper into the venue and you’ll discover a café counter just for dogs, dog treats, areas for dogs to chill out and the best range of pet toys in town

Owner Garry explained how his family came up with their idea for a pet café. “In Europe you can go out to a café and sit outside with your dog, you can socialize with your animals.” Garry explained. “When we first thought about opening a pet store we just started exploring ideas that didn’t involve selling pets. We noticed when we took our family out we were looking for someone to go after we’ve been out, without having to take all our dogs home first.” The café holds regular adoption days for people to adopt recused animals, and they deliver training sessions on socialisation; encouraging dogs to just hang out together, and they through parties for both dogs and people. “It’s getting dogs used to socializing with other dogs, big dogs and small dogs all hanging out together.” Garry said. We took Wellie, the dog who lounges around the OUTinPerth office down to the café. Wellie joined Sherlock, Miley and Ollie, the four dogs barking and checking each other out. Within a few minutes though they all calmed down and just began chilling out. It’s our new favourite hangout! To take your dog out on a date head to The Pet Lover’s Café at 195 Guilford Rd in Maylands.

“You know which animals are booked in each day, but I could be dealing with any level of training, or any level of anxiety and certain issues which dogs and cats have. I can be photographing a rat one minute and the goat the next. Animals have lots of little nuances and things that make them unique.” Cearns told OUTinPerth. Ferrets, horses, goats and a lot of native animals are some of the more unusual subjects who have stepped into front Cearns’ camera’s lens. The most common question Cearns is asked about her profession is, how do you get the animals to sit still? “I don’t” she revealed, “I know if make a certain noise or movement I’ll get a reaction and I’ll be able to capture that moment, but it’s all very fast. Based in Perth Cearns is now Australia’s leading animal photographer and Creative Director of Houndstooth Studio. Cearns said that most of her clients who commission photographs of their pets are similar to her. “My dogs are like my furkids, their part of my family, they sleep inside and they go on play dates. I think its people who are very invested in their animals. Beautiful pet owners who want a piece of pet art on the wall to celebrate their pets.” Find out more at www.houndstoothstudio.com.au/

Proudly, the Renault Clio boasts its success on winning Australia’s Best Light Car Award consecutively for 2013 and 2014. The combination of vehicle features, driving performance and value for money is what earned the Renault Clio first place for the title for Australia’s Best Light Car. Chandra Woodley, the Marketing and Communications Manager for the Cat Haven tells OUTinPerth that the charity constantly faces two challenges. “Too many cats and not enough funding, basically we’re a charity and we’re run almost entirely on donations.” Woodley said. The organisation that shelters and rehouses thousands of cats each year generates some income through their shop and kennel services but they rely on the public to support their work. On our visit to the Cat Haven we met eight year old Mischief. He first came to the Cat Haven a year ago, he was adopted out but returned as he was a bit of a stress monkey. Mischief is looking for a quiet home, probably one with no children. Because Mischief is FIV+ he’ll need to be an indoor cat. Chandra explains that cats like Mischief who have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) which is similar to HIV in humans, but not contractible by humans, may develop some health issues later in life. “There can be costs involved later in life so people are hesitant to adopt a FIV+ cat. While we’re hanging out with Mischief he makes it clear, he really likes having his ears scratched. He’s very affectionate. He rolls around and asks us to scratch his head and when it comes times to close his apartment door, he rubs his head on the glass hoping for one last ear scratch.

The Cat Haven charges for people wanting to adopt a cat but the money goes towards the thousands of dollars it costs each week to run their operations. People seeking kittens will pay a little more, but for older cats like Mischief the organisation seeks only a small donation. The Cat Haven sterilises all the cats that pass through its doors, and an onsite vet works to make sure all the cats health is taken care of. There’s also great news for FIV+ cats like Mischief, “We have a generous benefactor who covers all of the medical costs of cats with FIV, if they’re over the age of seven,” Chandra explained, which gives FIV+ cats a much greater chance of being adopted. “For FIV+ cats over seven, we really only seek a gold coin donation, and seven is not old for a cat, cats live into their twenties!” To make a donation to the Cat Haven, foster a cat who is waiting for adoption, or adopt a cat – visit the Cat Haven at www.cathaven.com.au Graeme Watson

Ruck Rover General Store are bunkering down for STAY SAFE 2015, an annual charity event founded last year by local artist, writer and curator Kate-Anna St Valentine. All works will be available for sale with all proceeds donated to Western Australian charity SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia). The line-up includes local artists Sean Morris, Anna Dunnill and Martin E Wills, among others. STAY SAFE was a great success last year, thanks to the efforts of Ruck Rover co-owner Claire Trolio and event founder/curator Kate-Anne St Valentine. There’s no doubt Matthew Ingram and his partner Shaun Anning have a great love their two dogs Sandy and Lilly. While Sandy’s been on the scene for around ten years, younger Lilly was a rescue dog they began fostering around five years ago. One of Shaun and Matthew’s businesses, Studio Lillet in Leederville, was even named after Lilly. The couple admit it was a lot of work to train the rambunctious younger dog but their perseverance has paid off. Shaun told OUTinPerth that the dogs really like to go to the park every day and sulk if they miss out.

Bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small. We caught up with some OUTinPerth readers and friends to meet their furry companions. Sarah Foreman got her dog Charlie because she was feeling lonely. ”I have a lot of time to myself and I wanted someone to hang out with.” Sarah told OUTinPerth, “So I got a little dog.” “I did a lot of research online into smaller dogs and got Charlie who is a miniature pincher.” Sarah said. “There’s only one breeder in Western Australia but when I contacted her a new litter had just been born.” Sarah describes Charlie as shy but said he also has a sense of humour. “He’s very shy but very cuddly once he gets to know you.” Sarah said, He’s really funny, if he doesn’t like something, he’ll just sneeze at you.”

Perth is set to get a new animal experience with plans to open a Cat Café in the inner city area in the very near future. “The Cat Café’s started in Tokyo and then Paris and New York and one recently opened in Melbourne. We went and visited that one and thought if this phenomenon is coming to Australia then we want to open the first one in Perth.” Chris Mewburn told OUTinPerth. The concept is a simple one at the front of the venue is a standard café where you can have a coffee and cake relax while looking through a big glass screen to a cluster* of cats. But for an extra fee you can spend an hour hanging out with the cats.

DJ Cinnamon has had her cat Princess Daisy for over 8 years. Cinnamon said that Princess Daisy is a total princess. “She has attitude - but who wouldn’t if they were that pretty and especially since an annoying little dog came in to her life two years ago” Cinnamon said. Cinnamon said her pet might have ‘tude but she always cuddles up at night, sleeping under my arm and taking up most of the bed. Cinnamon told us that Princess Daisy’s favorite pastimes include sleeping 22 hours a day, eating her beloved Fancy Feast (but only seafood varieties don’t you dare give her anything else), chewing on peoples hair, doing rolly pollies and having her cheeks scratched Random Trivia Acceptable collective nouns for cats include clowder, cluster, clutter, pounce and glaring.

US Supreme Court rules in favour of

marriage equality

In a landmark decision the US Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional for states to ban same sex marriage. The decision 5-4 in favour of allowing same sex couples to marry said that no matter where couples live in the USA they have a right to wed. “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. Justice Kennedy was joined in the opinion by the court’s liberal justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. The five justices voting in favour of marriage equality authored a single opinion on their decision. All four of the court’s more conservative justices voted against the decision. The four dissenting judges, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. have each written a separate dissenting opinion the decision. Delivering his dissenting opinion Chief Justice John Roberts said he believed that the decision should have been made politically rather than through the courts. Justice Roberts described the issue as being stolen from the people. “Today, however, the Court takes the extraordinary step of ordering every State to license and recognize same-sex marriage. Many people will rejoice at this decision, and I begrudge none their celebration. But for those who believe in a government of laws, not of

men, the majority’s approach is deeply disheartening. Supporters of same-sex marriage have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens—through the democratic process—to adopt their view. That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of marriage as a matter of constitutional law. Stealing this issue from the people will for many cast a cloud over same-sex marriage, making a dramatic social change that much more difficult to accept.” Chief Justice Roberts said. In making its decision the court looked into cases from Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky where restrictions against same sex marriages had been upheld in the last year. The ban was challenged by 14 couples and two widowers affected by their states same sex marriage bans. The lead plaintiff in the case was Jim Obergefell who married his partner John Arthur in 2013. Obergefell and Arthur travelled from their home in Ohio to Maryland on board a medical jet when Arthur became ill, he died a few months after their wedding. Mr Obergefell was fighting the state of Ohio to recognise him as his partners spouse on his death certificate. The ruling means that LGBTI couples in all 50 states of the USA will be able to wed. The decision has been described as the biggest changes to marriage laws in the USA since the court struck down bans on interracial marriages almost 50 years ago.

Cross-party

marriage equality

bill planned for August Liberal MPs Warren Entsch and Teresa Gambaro are expected to co-sponsor a cross party bill for marriage equality when federal parliament returns in August, according to reports.

“What happens in the United States is obviously a matter for the United States, just as what happened in Ireland a few weeks ago is a matter for the Irish,” Mr Abbott said.

Joining Mr Entsch and Ms Gambaro on the bill, Labor’s Terri Butler and Independents Cathy McGowan and Andrew Wilkie. An as yet unnamed second representative for Labor will also sponsor the motion.

“Obviously there is a community debate going on, I have views on this subject which are pretty well known and they haven’t changed.”

The Liberal Party have not yet announced whether a conscience vote will be allowed. Many members of parliament are sure to oppose the proposition, making a Liberal conscience vote the best chance at this stage for legislation to change. Following the US decision to legalise marriage equality in all 50 states, Prime Minister Tony Abbott seemed unfazed, still resolute in his stance against changing legislation.

Not all members of the Liberal Party are as staunch as Mr. Abbott in their opposition, with New South Wales’ Liberal Premier Mike Baird allowing his government a free vote on marriage equality, unanimously passing a motion calling on the Prime Minister to allow a coalition conscience vote. It has also been noted that the bill will ensure that religious organisations will not be forced to marry same-sex couples.

Saudi Arabia

Pitcairn Island

We support human rights, not gay rights

World’s smallest country legalises samesex marriage

Saudi Arabia has been under fire from the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva this month, particularly for mistreatment of LGBTIQ peoples. Saudi Arabia currently allow punishments of chemical castration, torture, life imprisonment and death for homosexuality – punishments which do not comply with international human rights standards. Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry tweeted “Saudi Arabia opposes any resolution for gay rights. Saudi Arabia reaffirms its support for human rights, and respect towards all international conventions, as long as it is in accordance with Islamic law.”

One of the smallest countries in the world, Pitcairn Island, passed legislation this month to allow same-sex couples to marry – though with a population of only 48, they have no one who needs to make immediate use of the law. While it has some autonomy, Pitcairn Island is a territory of the United Kingdom. The legislative changes were suggested by British officials in light of marriage equality becoming legal in the UK last year. Pitcairn’s governing council approved the motion unanimously.

Italy

Hundreds of thousands march against marriage equality Over 300,000 people gathered in San Giovanni Square in Rome this month to protest proposed legislation by current Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi. Italy is attempting to pass laws to legalise same-sex civil unions by the end of July this year. Vincenzo Brana, head of Italian gay rights association Arcigay, said the protesters “show they are living on another planet, and I would recommend leaving them on that planet alone.”

Turkey Police launch attacks on Pride parade The LGBT pride parade in Istanbul was broken up by police this year, shooting attendees with rubber bullets and pepper spray on site. Turkish Pride organisers said that the Istanbul government would not allow the procession this year, due to its convergence with Muslim holy month, Ramadan. Pride parades have run through Istanbul for over a decade without violence or interference. Many attendees believe the disruption was Istanbul attempting to appease conservative President Recep Erdogan, who has recently seen a downturn in voter support

Austria

National Assembly vote against marriage equality Just 2 days before the launch of Vienna Pride, the National Assembly of Austria voted against a proposed resolution to grant homosexual couples “the human right of equal marriage”. Just 26 representatives voted for the legislation, with the remaining 110 members of government voting against. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) spoke openly at the opening of Vienna’s Pride Village about equality for all, though when it came to the vote, the SPÖ were among those who voted against the resolution.

United States Historical LGBT inn recognized as landmark The site of the historical Stonewall riots and iconic LGBT venue, The Stonewall Inn, was granted heritage status by the New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission with a unanimous decision. The Stonewall Inn is the first New York City structure that has been deemed a landmark due to its significance to the LGBTIQ community. Since the 1969 riots, The Stonewall has been a bustling gathering hub for celebrating gay rights, Pride and marriage equality in New York City.

“That’s the consequence of a decision from the Supreme Court, but more importantly, it is a consequence of the countless small acts of courage of millions of people across decades who stood up, who came out, talked to parents, parents who loved their children no matter what, folks who were willing to endure bullying and taunts, and stayed strong, and came to believe in themselves and who they were. And slowly made an entire country realise that love is love.” Barack Obama on achieving marriage equality

“Contemporary art’s job is to wreck what came before. Is there a better job description than that to aspire to? Here’s another trigger warning, and pardon (me) for (swearing): Go out in the world and f**k it up beautifully. Design clothes so hideous that they can’t be worn ironically. Horrify us with new ideas. Outrage outdated critics. Use technology for transgression, not lazy social living. Make me nervous!” John Waters on creativity

Jacob Oberman is one half of the duo Straps who feature in the show Absinthe. Jacob describes his act with fellow performer Maika Isogawa as an aerial love story.

Jacob says the duos main job is to make something that’s technically very difficult look quite easy. “I think our main job is to make it look easy, you want people to think ‘I could have done that…’ but then they go home and say, ‘Oh, wait a minute.’” The flying artist shares that he has tried the drink that the show takes its name from. “Ansinthe, it was very much like licorice, I don’t know if I liked it that much.”

The high twirling performer first entered the world of circus and cabaret when he was quite young.

Absinthe has a strictly limited season on the backlot at Perth Arena from 11th July. Ticket details at Ticketek.

IT’S NOT A LAUNDROMAT Lucky Chan’s is a well-hidden, tri-level, late night restaurant that has taken Asian dining in Perth to another level, (or three). You’ll find it on William Street, Northbridge, if you don’t look hard you’ll easily miss it. Washing machines fill the windows, so thinking of a Chinese laundry instead of a Chinese restaurant will help you navigate your way to the entrance. Apparently people were trying to drop laundry off before it opened, it’s all part of its quirky offbeat charm. The first level is simple. Almost canteen style dining, with a long bar with seats. This, for me, is my ‘go to’ space. The second level is booths and allows a bit more intimacy. The third rooftop space is a fantastic small bar with separate tables and booths dotted around the terrace. Every area within the venue gives you a level of privacy but also makes you feel like you’re part of a bigger picture. It’s a great vibe, whether you’re there for lunch or eating at 3am. Perth really needs lots more late night options and Lucky Chan’s is doing it, and doing it well. Each evening the place is filled with foodies, boozers and hospitality folk, it caters to everyone. I try to order something different every time but I do have my favourites. Any of the Boa Wow will always hit the spot and the Pig’s Ears are delicious. Lucky Chan’s are praised for their dumplings, Fernet Branca shots, ramen and chili sauces. Order all the dumplings and add spicy Sriracha sauce on the side.

When you order your ramen, you’re asked which level of spiciness you’d like. Get it spicy, somewhere in the range of 10 to 13 on their spiciness scale. Unless you’re a massive chili buff don’t dial it up to 20. I’ve seen many people struggle through, but it’s a big effort and not for the faint hearted. The ramen servings are a good size. ‘The Danny’, which is pork based, is a great. Red broth with beautiful pork mince and buttered corn. The noodles, which are made on the premises, are soft and lengthy, and bring the dishes together. The veggie option ‘Unami Monster’ is just as good as ‘The Danny’. On top of the food, it’s the staffs love for what they’re doing that keeps bringing me back. Their service, knowledge, and desire to create a great venue really comes through everything they do. Lucky Chan’s Laundry and Noodle Bar is at 311 Williams St Northbridge. Alice Mod

PREP COMMUNITY UPDATE

+ WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PREP?

Being educated about safe sex practices that fit into your lifestyle is the best way to equip yourself against HIV and STIs. Building up your ‘safe sex toolbox’ with prophylactic equipment like condoms and PrEP will assist you in making the best decisions for your health and wellbeing.

WHAT IS PREP?

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis or “PrEP” is the use of anti-retroviral medication by people who do not have Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), but who are at considerable risk of getting it, to prevent the acquisition of the HIV infection. The medication, called Truvada™, is made up of a combination of two antiretroviral medicines. These drugs are also used to suppress the virus in people who live with HIV.

WHO SHOULD TAKE PREP?

Clinical trials have established that PrEP is effective in reducing the chances of acquiring HIV amongst populations who are at high risk of HIV acquisition. PrEP can be considered for gay and other homosexually active men who are having multiple events of condomless sex with partners of unknown HIV status. Under some circumstances, PrEP may also be considered for heterosexual adults or injecting drug users. The decision to use or not use PrEP is an individual’s choice. There are clinical guidelines that clinicians can use when recommending PrEP to patients, so it is important to be informed about PrEP when talking to clinicians.

HOW DOES PREP WORK? Truvada™ has been shown in a number of clinical trials to be highly effective in reducing the chances of acquiring HIV if it is used correctly. This means taking one tablet each day, every day. Truvada™ needs to be taken for some days before it provides an effective barrier to HIV. The evidence isn’t clear on how long, but current indications are between 2 and 7 days. If you stop taking Truvada™, HIV resistance will decline rapidly. Despite the effectiveness of PrEP, it is recommended as a complementary strategy with other prevention strategies, such as the use of condoms.

IS PREP AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA?

Yes. People living on the East Coast of Australia (Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne), have access to PrEP through participation in one of the several ongoing clinical trials. You must be a resident in these states to take part in these trials.

whole year’s supply of Truvada™ is estimated currently to be approximately $13,500. This will be too expensive for many people, but fortunately there are other options that are described below.

HOW CAN I GET PREP IN WA?

The first step should be to meet with a clinical service experienced with HIV, such as the M Clinic or one of the sexual health clinics across WA. A discussion with the staff will help you decide whether PrEP is suitable for you, and you can also get more information about how to access the medication at more affordable prices. If you have decided that PrEP will work for you and your circumstances, M Clinic can give you names of doctors who will provide you with an “off label” prescription. Once you have this, you have the opportunity of purchasing a generic version of Truvada™ from a reliable overseas supplier. A generic drug is one that is of the same composition as the branded version, but sold at a significantly lower price. A full year’s supply of a generic version of Truvada™ would currently cost you approximately $1,300, or about 90% less than the locally provided version. Accessing most drugs overseas via the Internet is perfectly legal in WA, provided that; • • • •

They are for your personal use They are not supplied to any other person They are imported into Australia, accompanied by a valid Australian prescription They cover no more than a three-month period at the recommended dose

Importing drugs in Australia is covered under “Australia’s Personal Importation Scheme for Medicines”. For further details and any other conditions, visit the TGA website: www.tga.gov.au/importingmail-or-courier The WA AIDS Council or M Clinic can offer you step-by-step guidance on accessing PrEP from a reliable overseas supplier.

+ FINDING OUT MORE

Truvada™ has been licensed in the United States for use as PrEP; however in Australia the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved its use here. This means that the drug is not available at a subsidised price unless it is prescribed specifically as a treatment for people who already have HIV.

M Clinic is community sexual health clinic run by and for gay and other homosexually active men. To discuss PrEP and your sexual health, you can call for an appointment (Phone: 9227 0734) and have a frank and open discussion with staff without any fear of judgement.

Your doctor can prescribe Truvada™ for you under what is known as an “off label” prescription. This refers to a drug that is prescribed for a condition for which it does not have TGA approval. Without the subsidy that TGA approval can offer, the cost to you for a

Their label One Fell Swoop has now been around for a decade and as the duo take a break in the kitchen of their Mt Lawley studio they ponder our question about what they know now, that they didn’t know when they first started out. “Probably nothing,” laughed Ergic, before thinking more about the question. “Now when were in the initial stages of design we keep in mind things that we never used to.” Ergic said, “We never used to think of stuff before we made something, now we think about all different variables when we go into design.” “Now we think about the cost of something and how much it will cost when it’s made, who’s going to buy it, who’s it targeting, we never used think about those things. We used to just go ‘that’s pretty’ and then make it.” Ergic said. “Now we want people to buy it and wear it,” Romanin added. Ergic said that sometimes when the team get their sales reports back from retail outlets they are surprised at which pieces have been popular. The pair credit tolerance and compromise as the secrets to their long standing creative partnership. “It’s important that we take time to just enjoy each other’s company outside the

realm of work” Romanin said. Erfic agrees “It’s important that our relationship is not just a work thing.”

anything particularly creative evolving, but she has faith that it always will happen.

Ergic and Romanin are currently working on their winter collection, but they’re not really sure what it’s going to be yet. The last few weeks have seen the duo looking at fabrics and sending samples back and forth – but what those fabrics will evolve into is still a mystery.

The label will once again be featured at STYLEAID in 2015, Romanin said the team is excited about the upcoming fashion fundraiser. “It’s an amazing cause,” Ergic said.

Romanin describes the duo’s creative process as being very organic. “There’s a lot of sitting here at the table and talking, and then it comes together.” “We do tend to get a lot more done once the pressure is on and the clock is counting down.” Ergic said, “You have to allow yourself some time to play and explore, I always know it’s going to get done.” Ten years into their career the duo said they have changed their style, but things remained constant. “We don’t sketch.” Romanin said, “It’s still all done really naturally on the mannequin. Ergic describes how the pair can spend days playing with fabric on a mannequin without

The duo first encountered STYLEAID as students volunteering at the event. Ergic said the backstage world of STYLEAID was quite a rush, “when you see it all backstage, the dancers, the make-up and the hair, you just say to yourself ‘Oh my God, where are all these people coming from?’ Backstage at other events is very different, it is normally just yourself and maybe one other brand.” Looking to the future, One Fell Swoop are looking to expand their presence overseas. “It’s not so much about trying to show” said Romanin, “We’re more focused on wholesale and getting sales there and then maybe working up to a show, but you never know which road is next, there are so many opportunities.” One Fell Swoop will be taking part in the 10th STYLEAID on Friday 29 July at Crown. Stephanie Caulier just loves to knit. The Belgian born fashion designer has been knitting since she was 5 years old, which has evolved not only into a passion, but also a livelihood. Don’t expect Caulier to crochet you a bauble, because she’s designed and created an entire knitwear collection in the name of love, ‘I Love Mr. Mittens’. Caulier says the name “started a bit as a joke with a name from a cat book. It didn’t feel right to change it after to something more serious so I stuck to it.” More than fitting, the Mittens collection looks as warm and playful as a kitten discovering the joys of yarn. Caulier began promoting her label just 2 years ago, garnering an enormous following on social media and in the fashion realm. “When I launched the ILMM collection in Australia, that was the first year we started making our own patterns”, Stephanie says, “I knitted before then too but it was more like knitting and see where we come out at.” ILMM’s fashions are all entirely knitted, with no fabric besides wool featured in the collection. “For the designs now I work closely together with my knitters and we have just added an Italian knitwear designed to our team too.” “I never had an interest in sewing or other fabrics. It always looked too complicated for me. I see my mum drawing patterns with 200 lines on and cutting all the fabrics and I just don’t understand how it works or have the patience to learn.” ILMM abides by a “Heartworking” philosophy, Stephanie explained, “Every ILMM item is hand knitted. It’s something that can’t be rushed and can take a long time. You really need to have a great passion for knitting to be able to knit the volumes we do. Lots of love and time go in every piece!”

Getting ready for STYLEAID is a massive task. As part of the process, Ally May and Mark Reid audition over a hundred models who’d like the chance to participate. The creative duo have years of practice at seeking out the best models for the HIV AIDS fashion fundraiser. Models they’ve known from previous years might not have to walk for them, but a long line of new models queue outside the Grand Ballroom at Crown on a Sunday afternoon, hoping to get a spot on the catwalk. May explains that for this year’s show they’re looking for 60 girls and 25 boys. One by one the models walk in and have a quick chat with Reid and May before walking the length of the room. With just a small desk and two chairs at one end, the Ballroom is a cavernously empty space. “We’re looking for confidence, a good posture,” May explains. “We don’t mind taking people who are new but they’ve got to look convincing. It’s not necessarily about the face, all the models here today are beautiful, but they’ve got to have confidence, it’s a big show.” “We’ve cast independent models every year,” Reid said, but noted that they have to have a certain level of ability to

look good on the STYLEAID stage. Together the duo have the responsibility of making sure the integrity of the brands showcasing their latest designs is honoured. Twenty year old Connor was one of the many models hoping to get a place at STYLEAID. Connor is new to modeling and does not yet have an agent, but he’s certainly got the looks, his long curly Samsonesque hair made him stand out. When Connor enters the room he quickly chats with Reid and May before walking back and forth. His time in the audition room is just a few minutes. “I was nervous as soon as I walked in,” Connor said, “but once I was there I thought – just get on with it. It felt funny walking up and down the room.” May notes that Connor has a beautiful face and gorgeous hair, but there’s some concern about his walk. He’ll have to wait to find out if he’s made the cut.

The final task Reid and May have at the end of the day is to cast the models who’ll wear swimwear in the show. They decide to look at all the potential models in one go. Soon a line of models in their underwear are standing in front of the table. Twenty two year old Jack Hyslop is also new to modeling, he’s done a few favours for friends, but now he’s under consideration for the swimwear section of the show. The handsome young man is an actor by trade and he said that background gave him the confidence to strut his stuff. “I’m quite alright, I’ve been naked on stage before. Being with a group of lads auditioning at the same time was a bit of fun actually.” Hyslop said. Like all the other models he’ll have to wait and find out if he’s caught the selector’s attention and made the cut. STYLEAID GOGO is at Crown Perth on Friday 31 July. One of Noel Coward’s most memorable comedies is to be resurrected by Black Swan State Theatre Company this July. ‘Blithe Spirit’ tells the tale of writer Charles Condomine, who contacts a clairvoyant while researching his latest novel. Charles, hoping to find inspiration by contacting the dead, instead finds his deceased wife, Elvira, has returned to his side – much to the chagrin of his living wife, Ruth. Director Jeffrey Jay Fowler spoke to us about bringing new life to old words. Have you ever worked on a Noel Coward play before?

A multi-faceted entertainer with a wit and whimsy that has influenced theatre, music and film for over a century, the man who would one day become Sir Noël Peirce Coward was born in the London suburb of Middlesex in 1899 to parents Violet and Arthur. Coward wrote, directed and starred in dozens of plays, musicals and films throughout the 1900s, working with a young Laurence Olivier on stage in ‘Private Lives’ and performing cabaret with Elaine Stritch in Las Vegas. Coward was never open about his homosexuality, though his works often explored themes of sexuality both obviously and allegorically. During World War II, Coward was to receive a knighthood for his efforts in the name of British intelligence, though was denied by Winston Churchill, tentatively due to his flamboyant nature. Coward was eventually knighted in 1969, as well as becoming a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and receiving a lifetime achievement Tony. Noël Coward was one of very few entertainers to visit Western Australia during wartime. In 1940, Coward arrived at Maylands Aerodrome to a barrage of questions from starving journalists who hadn’t seen an international celebrity for months. Coward was questioned about his opinion of Australian theatre and its role in the war, as well as more probing inquiries regarding his long-standing bachelordom. The playwright was treated to the crème-de-la-crème of Perth high society, featuring as guest of honour for Lord Mayor T. W. Meagher at Perth Council Chambers, a garden party at Government House and dinner with Lieutenant-Governor Sir James Mitchell and Lady Mitchell. He also performed his cabaret show at Capitol Theatre on William St, and later at Hoyts Theatre in Fremantle, though to how many people remains unknown to this day. Of his whirlwind tour of the West, Coward wrote to his dear friend “…here where everything is so tremendously English. You have no idea what they feel about the home country and I am most deeply impressed by it”. Soon after his departure and arrival back on the east coast, Sir Noël Coward spoke on radio of his time in Perth; “I was told publicly by an eminent gentleman in Perth that it was a great privilege for me to visit Western Australia. This was absolutely true, but it seemed strange to hear it said with such sublime complacency – rather like arriving at somebody’s house and being told by the host how fortunate you are to be eating such delicious food in such distinguished company.” Leigh Hill

No, I haven’t! They definitely get put on. This play came across my desk when we were hunting for something for me to do for Black Swan for the first time which is different from what I normally do. I’ve been working independently, writing my own shows and directing them for quite a few years and when you move up into a theatre like Heath Ledger Theatre, you have a much bigger audience and you have a different demographic you’re appealing to, so Noel Coward just wasn’t on my radar. When the artistic director of Black Swan put Blithe Spirit on my desk I gave it a read and I thought there was something in there was still worth talking about. It’s pretty human: jealousy and the hauntings of the past. Something particularly notable of Blithe Spirit is that it was written, set and performed during wartime but the war is not mentioned in the play – do you plan to reflect Coward’s thematic choice in your production? Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit during World War II and quite purposefully doesn’t mention the war, which sets it in a version of England where you assume no war is going on. I think he was at a point where he wanted to create something personal and entertaining and I think that’s a valid choice for the time and it still would be now. I think there’s a great place for political theatre but I don’t think it always needs to be political. In this play the personal is political and it is very much about an internal struggle, more than a national or international struggle. There have been a number of versions of Blithe Spirit, including the musical High Spirits, what can we expect from Jeffrey Jay Fowler’s Blithe Spirit? I think there’s something dangerous about putting your stamp on a play, I think the best thing you can do is try and illuminate the play for the year that you’re doing it in and that’s what I’m going to do. The same as any other play I would ever direct, I’m looking for the emotional

truth first and foremost. The conversation in the room so far has been “What would it be if one of your ex’s turned up one day and decided to live in your house with your current partner?”, I’m looking at the haunting in the play as a metaphor for unresolved feelings that can surge back and affect us from time to time and I just want the humour to be as present as it can be. It’s a really wonderfully witty, tightly written script and I want to honour that. It’s unbelievable to think this work has been performed over so many years but was written by Coward in just five weeks. I know that he wrote all of his plays in very brief periods after very long thinking periods. I know that he wrote one of his plays in just a weekend. The thing about being a playwright is that, the amount of time actually spent typing is one thing but the thinking process could have gone on for years and years, it just depends when that pear is ripe to be plucked from the tree. Is there a great difference for you to work on an established work such as this, as opposed to your original pieces? Yeah! I’m known to be editing scripts right up to the day of performance, even during season. I feel that text is a very fluid thing and one advantage that theatre has across other art forms such as television or movies – it can continually change and be different every night, an always shapeshifting art form. When you have an existing script, you don’t have all of that generous freedom that your own work offers you. It may be different every night but the words have to be precise and to already know all the words we’re going to say actually feels a bit backwards compared to contemporary performance. When you’re working with someone else’s work, there’s a lot to honour. ‘Blithe Spirit’ will run at Heath Ledger Theatre from July 18 – August 9. Ryan Adams Live at Carnegie Hall I’ve seen Ryan Adams live in concert, so I expected his first live album to be six CD compilation of extended psychedelic jams of his alt.country hits. This selection of ten songs that includes two new tunes is a beautiful live rendition of some of Adam’s tunes, he sticks closely to the original recordings and while it’s flawless – it’s still disappointing for fans. The problem is that this prolific artist, who has averaged an album a year since the year 2000, has so many great songs that a selection of ten easily misses out your favorite 45 Ryan Adams tunes. A good intro to an amazing artist for the uninitiated.

Oh Mercy When We Talk About Love

After several successful mixtapes this rapper from Long Beach releases his debut double album of twenty tracks of succinct social commentary and beats. The album opens with beachside sounds that quickly end as Staples starts to tell us about his world and how as a black man he won’t be respected until he starts to make some money. On ‘Norf Norf’Staples proclaims “I’ve never run from nothin’ by tha police” and comments “Know when change gon’ come like Obama would say, but they shootin’ every day ‘round my mama and them way.” Listen to the lyrics on this one, he has a lot to say. s

If there’s one word to sum up the fourth album from Australian band Oh Mercy it’s lush. Filled with strings, heartbreak and soaring melodies this is the best record so far from Alexander Gow. The songwriter headed to Nashville to write the album and whittled the tune selection down from over forty songs before he headed into the studio. ‘If You Come Around Tonight’ is one of the highlights, also check out the upbeat yearning ‘Sandy’, and ‘Without Love’ which reminds us of a classic Australian sound. A great album that you can play from start to finish.

Giorgio Mororder Deja Vu The bar of expectation is pretty high for the producer who created some of the biggest pop hits of all time, and while they might not become classics, this is an album of perfect pop tunes. Collaborations with Kylie Minogue and Sia are uplifting sings-a-longs. ‘Wildstar’ featuring British singer Foxes is a disco thumper, ‘Don’t Let Go’ the collaboration with Mikky Ekko did make me wonder why Italy doesn’t tap Moroder for their next Eurovision entry, and skip past Britney Spears covering Suzanne Vega, but don’t miss ‘Back and Forth’ featuring Kelis. Campest record around at the moment.

Catch him this month at ‘Love Sundays’ at Connections Nightclub on 19th July and he’ll be bring the party vibes to STYLEAID on Friday 31 July. We asked DJ Hello Sailor which tracks are currently on his playlist House Disclosure | Holding On (Feat. Gregory Porter) Enriched with Porters vocals, this highly anticipated return from the British powerhouse is quintessential Disclosure; Up-tempo two-step garage redefined. High rotation.

Tell us what you’ve been up to since you released No Plans? “Well, each individual member’s just been doing their own solo thing. We’ve kept in touch, we touch base all the time. No Plans released in 2012 and we went to the UK and did 4 shows over there in July 2012. Pretty much just been back to solo career, I’ve been writing since about a year or so after No Plans. Recorded with Barnes last July, finished that recording this year in March and that one’s all finished and mixed, just selecting the tracks and the order and the title.”

Local band French Rockets have released their second album and it’s a wonderful work of fuzzy guitars, clanging beats and hazy mumbled vocals. Opening up with the droning ‘Index Island’ the pace picks up quickly with ‘Pushing Metal’ an audio onslaught of muted rock, the driving beat continues through ‘Inside Out’ but then things get really interesting with the blissfully ambient ‘Paredolia’. ‘Stuck in a Moment’ is a mesmerizing bluesy ball of shimmering shoegaze and the closing track ‘Pneumatic’ is just epic. World class – but locally produced. ’ Graeme Watson Cerrone | Supernature (Feat. Beth Ditto) [Alan Braxe Mix] Disco rebooted with an injection of Ditto paired with French DJ Alan Braxe’s leaves you demanding more. Beth Ditto - LP? RÜFÜS | You Were Right Chilled with a hint of house. Simple layers defining that signature indie sound captured in ‘Atlas’. Perfect Sunday morning grooves.

Cold Chisel are gearing up for a brand new Australian tour, One Night Stand. Guitarist Ian Moss had a yarn with OUTinPerth about hitting the road.

French Rockets Arc

Alpine | Foolish Whimsically cleaver, with the return of crystalline cool aesthetics and extremely playful lyrics, down to the album title, ‘Yuck’. Urban Janet Jackson | No Sleeep Jimmy Jam. Terry Lewis… no words need. Laid-back, alluring, and seductively smooth. M.O | Preach 90s realness. Simple and infectious with harmonises that pump out a throwback influenced groove with a hint of sass, which is incredibly fresh.

You’ve got your tour coming up at the end of the year, should we expect your classics or will it be a new sound? “It’ll be a mix. We only get out there not that often. We’ve been over it and over it, we put a lot of work into designed what set we’re going to play. We kind of end up with a short list of 14 songs that we know we just have to play. That only actually leaves room for another 5 or 6 songs and some of those will be new songs and others will be songs like “One Long Day” - we haven’t given that a run in its entirety for years. We get a lot of requests for stuff like that. “ How do you find it on the road now as opposed to when you started out? Is there a bit difference in fan response?

“It just seems to be getting better. It’s amazing, the crowd seems to get bigger and bigger and the age variation gets wider… we’ve got our cake and we’re eating it as well.” The tour is going all around Australia, do you have plans to take it anywhere else? “Just to New Zealand at this stage! We did two shows over there on the last tour, hopefully we can cover a bit more ground next time. We’ve always wanted to get down to Christchurch and play for the earthquake victims.” OiP Staff Cold Chisel will be rocking the Perth Arena, Saturday November 14th. Melbourne band Oh Mercy have just released their fourth studio album with tracks to spare. Front man Alexander Gow tells us about the process of getting ready to launch an album from an artist’s perspective. The album seems to be getting a fantastic response. What’s the anticipation like when you’ve recorded it but people haven’t heard it yet and you know it’s about to arrive in everyone’s mailbox? “It’s nerve-wracking and it’s a little confusing, I’ve written these songs (some of them over 12 months or more) and the albums been finished for about 6 months so I’ve had a lot of time to understand the subtleties of the album. It’s an album that’s gonna take a fair few listens for it to really sink in the way I want it to. It’s a nervous time for me and I can’t wait for people to spend quality time with it.” I read that you wrote over 45 songs for this project! What happens to the other 33?

them all to various USB drives, in fact I gave one to my mum and dad, one to my brother and I was thinking about putting the third on a chain around my neck, just in case I get hit by a tram or something.” How do you decide what gets cut and what doesn’t? “There were a few different themes, if you will, in the songwriting over those 45 songs. If I’d only written 20 songs I might have been a little more heavy handed in picking which ones made the album but because there were so many, I was a little overwhelmed so I just employed the help of the people at EMI Records to guide me through the album that they wanted to hear. It seems like everybody was really attracted to these songs that were much more personal than the others.” Graeme Watson

“They’re all saved! I’ve demoed them extensively which means I’ve made recordings of them and the recordings are pretty good. I’ve saved

FILM REVIEWS

Inside Out

(pg)

Directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen Pixar have come a long way since Toy Story in 1995. In their fifteenth animated feature film, they venture into the mind of 11 year old Riley. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions and Pixar have personified these emotions and given them competing voices. The voices in the control room of Riley’s head are: Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Sadness. Adults and kids will fall in love with these colourful characters as they guide Riley’s feelings, oversee her stored memories and reinforce her core beliefs. When Riley’s family move from Minnesota to San Francisco, there is chaos in the control room as Riley struggles to cope. Joy and Sadness fight and end up stranded in Riley’s memories. Their journey back to the control room is truly amazing as they navigate things like Abstract Thought. Kids see the joy; adults see the pathos and everyone will want to see this film again.

Minions (PG)

Amy (MA)

The Absent One (R)

Originally assistants to Gru in ‘Despicable Me’, the Minions now have their own feature film. These childish yellow creatures wear goggles and blue overalls. They utter gibberish and create mischief and find themselves serving a series of masters over time. In this prequel to ‘Despicable Me’, they are looking for an evil master to serve. Kevin, Bob and Stuart (all voiced by Pierre Coffin) travel to London via New York in search of Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock). It is the sixties and the super villainess commands that the three steal the crown from Queen Elizabeth I (Jennifer Saunders) to prove their worthiness. Accompanied to an upbeat sixties soundtrack, the Minions undertake their task with an enthusiastic amount of slapstick comedy along the way. While this film is probably directed to a younger audience than ‘Despicable Me’, it is still good fun for the big ones and as well as the little ones..

Amy Winehouse was a North London Jewish girl with attitude. She also had an incredible voice and made music on her own terms. As a young jazz singer, she didn’t want to be famous and even thought she wouldn’t be able to handle it if she did end up being well-known. When she died in July 2011 at the age of 27, the media capitalised on the accumulated problems of the six-time Grammy Winner. Asif Kakadia’s documentary captures the contrast between her early life and singing career and her life under the spotlight. Her troubles seemed to come with fame but actually it is more complicated than that and they had their dark roots earlier in Amy’s life. It is a tragic story of someone with such raw talent who had her self-destructive trajectory captured by the piranha paparazzi. The documentary captures Amy’s humour and shyness, her beauty and forthrightness, her vulnerabilities and brilliance.

The hit of last year’s Scandinavian Film Festival was ‘The Keeper of Lost Causes’ and this film follows on from that. The Nordic noir thriller sees dedicated detective Carl Morck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and his colleague, the Syriaborn Assad (Fares Fares) chasing up leads on cold cases in the basement of the Copenhagen Police Station. In trying to solve the 20 year-old murder of a teenage brother and sister from a prestigious boarding school, their only lead is a homeless woman who has been missing since the time of the murder. While flashbacks reveal a series of brutal attacks that are sadistic and extremely violent, the police are frustrated at every turn by the closed ranks of the wealthy elite who have so much power. This two hour thriller from Denmark is part of the Scandinavian Film Festival which screens films from Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway at Cinema Paradiso 23-29 July.

TV News Gretel Killeen is teaming up with Matt Okine for a new ABC comedy series ‘How Not To Behave’ which explores modern etiquette in humorous and sometimes surprising ways. OUTinPerth asked Gretel Killeen what it was that first attracted to her to this project. “It was the casting.” Killen proclaims, “Putting me with Matt Okine, who is a different generation, and I just thought that was a really left of field idea. I thought it was indicative of where the show could go. The people behind this show were really open to ideas, and were embracing and encouraging. I think when you can find that you should loiter in those ponds.”

Given that Killeen has been swatting up on modern etiquette we asked her for her take on some of our manners questions. Head to www.outinperth.com to see what Gretel suggests about observing dress codes, binging up your friends Grindr posts in polite conversation, the importance of spelling and whether an RSVP on Facebook actually counts. ‘How to Behave’ begins Wednesday June 18th at 8pm on ABCTV

The on air chemistry between Okine and Killeen is something we haven’t seen on Australian television and they have a rich seam of material to mine exploring the rules of how we behave. “Sometime we really yearn to be told what they [the rules] are,” Killeen said. “So many of us are floundering, worrying about ‘how will I be perceived, will I be judged?’”

Since the Supreme Court of the United States landmark decision to extend the right to marry to same-sex couples, opponents of marriage equality have been very vocal in their condemnation of the court’s decision to not affect their personal lives in the slightest. Here’s a selection of reasonable doomsday warnings from the Twittersphere since the June 26 ruling; “From a moral standpoint, 6/26 is now our 9/11” -@BryanJFischer, American Family Association “Big Gay Hate Machine is coming for your church next.” -@NolteNC, Breitbart contributor “Yesterday, the US Supreme Court decided that words don’t matter. States don’t exist. Soon, our country won’t exist.” -@RickCanton, political activist “So this is what it felt like when the Roman Empire began to collapse, huh?” -@RBPundit

“How many Aussies who want to follow the US on “gay marriage” want to follow them on the right to bear arms as well?” -@GChristensenMP The Queensland MP posted his comments alongside an image of a machine gun with a rainbow magazine. The coalition backbencher issued an apology the following day. Luckily the pastor in Texas who had sworn to set himself on fire if the USA allowed marriage equality had second thoughts. Further investigation reveals what Pastor Rick Scarborough actually said on a conservative podcast was ‘"We are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and if necessary we will burn." He’s clarified that he wasn’t personally going to be igniting. A large number of American’s took to social media to proclaim that they were now moving to Canada, until people highlighted that Canada has had marriage equality for quite a while. So they announced they’d move to Australia instead.

MORRISON BREATHER SPACE

Aussie singer-songwriter Lior is celebrating the 10th year since the release of his debut album, ‘Autumn Flow’. The ARIA award winner is commemorating the occasion with a special rerelease of the album, replete with bonus tracks and neverbefore-heard tunes from Lior’s personal archives. Lior had a chat with us about his upcoming tour to support the release and the journey ‘Autumn Flow’ has made over the past decade. You’ve just rereleased Autumn Flow, what’s it been like for you to re-energise that album? It’s been really good, it’s been a very rich 10 years. There’s been about 6 albums involved and lots of collaborations and touring, I think as artists you’re always looking forward to the next project feeling like you can do better and I thought maybe it’s time to stop and reflect and celebrate on what’s been a pretty meaningful 10 years. It’s been really lovely to revisit it and the re-release has some demos and some previously unreleased material so it was really great going through the archives and listening to versions of the songs before I even recorded them. It’ll be great fun doing the tour with the full band and doing that album front to back too.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison has suggested that supporters of marriage equality should “Take a breather”. Above is an official stop and think space. Stare at it for a minute. OK. Break over back to work.

So you’re playing ‘Autumn Flow’ in its entirety on the tour? Yeah, I’ll play the album in its entirety and then after that I’ll go to town and choose my favourites from all the subsequent albums and have a bit of fun with it! With the new material you put on the album, how did you decide how that meshed with ‘Autumn Flow’? It’s being released as a bonus disc, so it’s separate. It was just about going through the archives and choosing the demos that kind of captures the essence of ‘Autumn Flow’, but had some differences as well. There’s a version of ‘Bedouin Songs’ on the original demo that I did which has a different chorus and there’s a different voice in some of the song – it’s about this is the original demo and it’s interesting to compare where it got to. On top of that there’s just been a few tracks that I’ve recorded over the years. Tracks I’m proud of that never found a home on an album and I only put them on something that could be considered a complete package. You’ve got a full live band on this tour, what’s it like working with these people? It’s a bit of a super group in the sense that I’ve just selected musicians that I’ve worked with and that I love playing with and it’s a pretty awesome line up of musicians that are going to be joining me on stage for this album. Leigh Hill Lior’s Autumn Flow Anniversary Tour hits Perth on Friday 30th October at The Astor Theatre.
