WHAT’S GOING ON? “Talk to me, so you can see”, Marvin Gaye sang in ‘What’s Going On’ way back in 1970. I was reminded of the song as I sat watching the show ‘Let’s Get It On: The Music of Marvin Gaye’. Over the last month there’s been quite a few ‘head scratch’ moments where I’ve wondered to myself “What’s Going On?” The NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli stopped screenings of the film ‘Gayby Baby’ in the state’s High Schools bowing to criticism from religious groups that the film was part of gay propaganda campaign. As far as we can tell none of the objectors to the film had watched it prior to lodging their claims of outrage. Banning a documentary is censorship. Banning it before you’ve watched it – that’s when we’ve got to really ask what’s going on? In the Daily Telegraph columnist Piers Akerman argued that we should recognise same sex parents and their families as being “not normal”. Akerman based his beliefs on a statistical observation that anyone who is not the majority – is not normal. Akerman’s column wasn’t directed at the queer community though, he addressed it to Ebony, the little girl who appears in Maya Newell’s ‘Gayby Baby’. When news columnists react to a film that aims to reduce bullying by giving addressing their columns directly to a teenage girl, you’ve got to stop and wonder about what’s going on? And after a six hour long coalition meeting about marriage equality, local politician and Deputy leader of the Liberal party, Julie Bishop is still unable to share her personal view on whether or not she believes in marriage equality. Despite reporters asking her several times, and direct requests being sent to her office, the most powerful Western Australian politician seems reluctant to share her personals views on the
topic – or indicate how she would represent those living in her electorate if the issue came up in parliament. Is Ms Bishop more interested in her own position of power than having an opinion? What’s going on?
GLASSES FASHION 6
A bill calling for a plebiscite on marriage equality at the next election has been referred to a senate committee for further investigation. Meanwhile the Prime Minister continues to dither between a referendum and a plebiscite while he remains adamant that either methodology will deployed in a few years. Greece can organise a vote within weeks, we need a few years, which makes the Prime Minister’s insistence that it’s an issue for 2017 or later just look like a delaying tactic, what’s going on?
GAYBY BABY 9
Former PM Julia Gillard declared that she’s now a big supporter of marriage equality. Regrettably, if she’d managed to work this out while she was PM people would have probably been celebrating their paper anniversaries by now. While many have defended Gillard’s previous position that as a second wave feminist she didn’t believe in marriage at all, others have suggested that what was really going on was deal making and pressure from right wing unions. And the biggest head scratch moment of the month, Miranda Devine went on The Bolt Report and argued that many people who have said they support marriage equality may have been confused by the phrase. Devine thinks a lot of people take ‘marriage equality’ to mean equality between a man and a woman within a marriage. On this last one, I think we all know what’s going on.

Extinction, the latest offering from Perth’s Black Swan State Theatre Company, is an Australian story that will resonate around the world. Based on the actual work of Victoria’s Conservation Ecology Centre, Extinction follows veterinarian Andy Dixon and conservation biologist Dr Piper Ross after one fateful evening brings them together with an endangered Tiger Quoll with dire injuries. Eminent Melbourne playwright Hannie Rayson, known for her works ‘Hotel Sorrento’ and ‘Life After George’ spoke to OUTinPerth about her experiences writing the play and why the Australian biosphere is so dear to her heart.
He takes the animal to a wildlife centre and there he meets an American zoologist and the play opens with them madly trying to resuscitate this animal and save its life. In the dead of night they form a personal bond.” The story of ‘Extinction’ is as much about humanity as the natural world, Rayson explains. Though the content is rich with real-world science and promotes awareness of humanity’s effects on the animal world, Rayson’s message is simple one. “Somebody asked me at one point, well what do you want to get out of the play? I would just really love for them to go and walk in the forest on the weekend! It’s so nourishing and such a nurturing experience and for me it’s quite a centre of creativity as well. I want to restore the forests so that so we can bring [the Tiger Quolls] back.”
Perth’s own Simon Thuijs has just returned from a triumphant run at the EuroGames – the world’s biggest international LGBT sporting tournament, playing field hockey with his London based team. Officially known as the European Gay and Lesbian Multi-Sports Championships, the games have been officially running since 1992. The mission of the EuroGames is to unite sportspeople regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity in their love of sports. The EuroGames sees over 5000 participants run, jump, hurl and sweat across dozens of events.
Though never unsure of her commitment to conserving Australian wildlife, Hannie says it was a moment of beautiful serendipity that inspired her to forge ahead with the play.
“It’s like a mini-Olympics,” Simon says, “There’s running, diving, swimming, water polo and that’s just a few.”
“The story really is about a man who, on a very wet cold August night, is driving down the south-western coast of Victoria along the Great Ocean Road into the rainforest and he’s driven down from northern New South Wales to tell his parents that his marriage is finished,” she says.
“I was in Melbourne when I finished my first draft and I sent the play off to Manhattan, pressed send on a Monday morning and thought ‘Oh great! I’ve finished the draft I can kick back for a moment!’ and I picked up The Age and on page 5 there was an article that was about there being a sighting of a Tiger Quoll which there hadn’t been for a number of years – over 20 years – and it was this fabulous moment where the stars are aligned and it felt absolutely momentous.”
Ready to play in his first ever LGBT tournament, Thuijs and his team The London Royals flew to Stockholm for the 2015 EuroGames in Sweden’s capital.
Radiant and warm, Rayson is obviously steeped in emotion just speaking of the story. I asked the playwright to describe the narrative in her own words.
Hannie Rayson’s Extinction will be at the Heath Ledger Theatre from Saturday 19th December to Sunday 4th October. Tickets available from Ticketek.
“In the wildness of the night he hits an animal on the road and he realises it’s a Tiger Quoll, which is an endangered species – an animal that was once very prolific in his childhood.
Spending just six months in London on university exchange, Thuijs (second from the left in the front row) managed to find a team, hone his skills and be selected for the massive international event.
“The EuroGames is one of the biggest LGBT international sporting events,” Thuijs says, “There were 7 teams from Denmark, The Netherlands, The UK and also Australia – a team from Sydney.” Simon, The London Royals and their female counterparts The Royal Lionesses each took home a gold medal in a double win for the UK. Simon and the Royals completed the tournament undefeated.
Perth treasures The Tommyhawks are launching their debut EP and taking the show on the road for 12 quaking shows across the country. ‘We’re All Meat and We’re All Gonna Get Eat’ is pumped full of the ‘Hawks trademark sound – a little bit blues, a little bit rock n roll and a whole lot of energy. Singer Addison Axe’s honeyed vocals contrast with the punk-tinted tones of the instrumental element of the band and combine with a wonderful synergy that
sets a perfect soundtrack to a cruisy Aussie summer of BBQ’s and poolside chills. Having recently supported the legendary Ms Courtney Love at her Perth performances, The Tommyhawks are a band you’ll want to keep a hawk’s eye on. The Tommyhawks launch ‘We’re All Meat and We’re All Gonna Get Eat’ at The Flying Scotsman, Friday 11th September.

‘Gayby Baby’ is probably a phrase you have been hearing a lot these past few weeks. An Australian documentary with a focus on children of same-sex parents has made international news when NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli banned the film from being screened at a Sydney high school.
Director Maya Newell, the daughter of two mothers, feels this hysteria is something which needs to be dispelled. Taking a fly-on-the-wall approach, Newell’s documentary provides a non-partisan window into a life that few have experienced. Newell explains the film is about 4 pre-teens (Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham) “who are kind of just growing up and traversing oncoming puberty as the world around them debates marriage equality and whether these kids are at risk.” The project was dreamed up at university with producer Charlotte Mars, another budding filmmaker. “We’d never had Screen Australia funding before and we didn’t know if we could make a film. So we went to the Australian public and crowdfunded $100,000 before anyone knew who we were. So this film, I think at the time, was the most amount of contributors for any film, which really showed us that people wanted the film.” The lives of children of same-sex parents are not a subject that has an endless archive of literature and public study over human history. Newell explains that being on the forefront of storytelling can be a double-edged sword.
“The stories of kids in our families are rarely told, if at all, and I think this is one of the first feature-length documentaries to share the perspective of kids in our families. I think that it’s wonderful to be revealing the voice of the kids but it’s also a lot of responsibility with doing something for the first time because we can’t represent everyone and I don’t expect to but I hope it’s at the forefront of a multiplicity of stories that arise over the coming decades.”
not been told. Unlike Maya, Faust believes that children should not be forced into embracing their parents ‘lifestyle’.
Of all of the formats through which to tell the story, Newell and her team found film to be the most effective tool for sharing the story of these four families.
“I think that all of our families are unique and different and I think that same-sex families are not perfect. What family is? I’m sure there are other people like Katy who had a hard time growing up and want to blame their parents – just like there are kids in heterosexual families who want to blame their parents. We blame our parents for everything! I think that what’s unfortunate is that the political climate right now has jumped on that and given Katy the opportunity to denigrate all of our families in the process.”
“There’s something really special about film as a format, it’s not like reading an article or all about facts and figures or reading a research paper about this-and-that and how kids will turn out. It allows an emotional connection to really get to know these families and hang out in them right up close and personal for an hour and a half.
After receiving international attention after the NSW Government prevented Newell’s alma mater Burwood Girls High School from screening the documentary, ‘Gayby Baby’ is a phrase on everybody’s lips. The idea of screening LGBTIQrelated content is abhorrent to some people, though Maya believes that is exactly what school is for.
Not all children of same-sex parents are proponents of marriage equality, as is embodied by American campaigner Katy Faust. A child of two mothers, Faust runs a blog knows as ‘asktheBigot’ and, like Maya, believes that her story has
“I think schools should be places that promote diversity and inclusivity of all students and so I feel very confident that our film sits very snugly in and amongst what Australian schools set out to do.” Leigh Hill

Virginity is a fluid term. A dictionary definition would tell you that virginity denotes the state of one who has never experienced sexual intercourse - but the intercourse is not identical, for example, for a cisgender male homosexual and a trans female pansexual. As expressions of intercourse differ within our community, we drift further away from an allencompassing understanding of the term. From the mother of Jesus to the astrological symbol of Virgo or a cocktail without the good bits concepts of virginity range from the most sacred of images to the most rudimentary activities. So what does it mean to us? Within our diverse and heterogeneous LGBTQIA+ community, we embrace a variety of expressions of gender and sexuality. I spoke with four people under the rainbow umbrella to try and understand how their unique experiences have shaped their notions of virginity.
Teen student Rose V is a cisgender female who identifies as lesbian. Miss Rose once considered herself to be bisexual and has come to learn that she feels most attracted to women. She would still describe herself as a virgin. Rose believes that as a lesbian, losing her virginity would include any intercourse with another woman – sexuality and men do not even connect for young Rose. “At some times I’ve felt that due to society you feel pressure to lose your virginity, as if you haven’t by a certain age you are ‘prudish’ or ‘stuck up’,” Rose says, “However, for keeping my virginity I haven’t been pressured. I do get
reminded by others that to keep your virginity is apparently a good thing. I personally believe that you can choose either way as long as you’re comfortable with your decision.”
Kelsie, another female student, considers herself to be pansexual. Unlike Rose, Kelsie believes that virginity is your first sexual experience – regardless of your partner’s gender.
Rose has always been honest about her virgin status, saying she feels it would be wrong to lie.
Kelsie too felt some pressure to “keep up” with her peers when it came to having her first sexual experience but in the end she knew it had to be her decision to make.
“There are always jokes about being a virgin, however I do not understand that when you do lose your virginity you seem to instantly obtain the label ‘slut’ or ‘whore’ if you are female, whereas if you are a male you get congratulated on sleeping around. I think that it is stupid that there is a double standard. I think that should change.”
“I actually wanted to lose my virginity for myself, because I really wanted to know how it would feel. The pressure was all from myself.” Kelsie did however feel pressure to lie about her age, having lost her virginity at 15, she says many condemned her for being “too young”.

“A lot of my friends of all genders know I’m not a virgin, and it doesn’t matter to them because my sex life is nobody’s business.” For 18-year-old pansexual Nick, virginity is about purity. “Pure,” he said when asked to define the term, “You haven’t been tainted with anyone else.” Nick’s understand was not restricted to one particular kind of intercourse – so long as it involved “connecting one’s privates”. Homosexual male Brenton has a more nuanced understanding of virginity, breaking his definition into three categories. “For me it was split between virginity and anal virginity. Defined as the first time I penetrated someone and the first time I was penetrated,” he says, “I lost my virginity to a female before I lost it to a male, so it could technically be split into three.”
As a gay man, Brenton felt he could not be open and honest like Rose – feeling pressure from friends to have his first sexual experience, but being told by heterosexual friends to supress discussing it openly. “I copped a lot of crap for that when I told some hetero friends, they didn’t understand being so open about it. [They thought] I couldn’t be considered gay until I’d ‘taken it’.” Rose, Kelsie, Nick and Brenton’s experiences and personal conceptualizations of virginity are as varied and diverse as our community and as individuals represent but four pieces of a far greater puzzle. Does the concept virginity, as a multifarious community, serve us at all? Leigh Hill Names of interviewees have been changed.
Why Cherries Though? The cherry has long been a symbol of virginity in culture, as we all know. It is commonplace to use the phrase to ‘pop your cherry’ but where and when did that come about? According to British lexicographer Jonathon Green, people were sexualising cherries as early as the 16th century. Of course, the shape and growth of the stone fruit reminds one of male reproductive organs, but there is more than one way the cherry had been perverted. Inspired by the dark colour of the black cherry, 16th and 17th century Britons would use the fruit to describe the shade of a woman’s pubic hair. A more contemporary resurgence in usage spawns from the early 20th century, based
on the idea of ripeness as opposed to shape or colour. Ripeness, in this sense, pertains to the notion of something that can has a prime time to be consumed – lest it wither and die. The physical loss of a hymen, the conceptual loss of innocence, the expiry of the fruit. It should also be considered that cherries are not exclusively popped; they can be picked, busted, broken, copped, gotten and cracked. Virgins have historically been dubbed ‘cherryboys’, and their penises ‘cherry-splitters’. One might remember these facts while binge-watching ‘Twin Peaks’ or listening to The Runaways for an alternative reading of the text.

win LiFE award Local community group Living Proud was the recipient of a prestigious LiFE Award at the 2015 Suicide Prevention Conference.
Bassendean Councillor proposes permanent Pride flag outside council offices The Town of Bassendean have heard a motion to raise the rainbow flag outside of the Old Perth Road council offices in support of the LGBTIQ community. Community News reported that Councillor Paul Bridges raised the motion “that the Town fly the rainbow flag in lieu of the Torres Straits Islander or the Town of Bassendean flag to show support for our gay and lesbian residents and marriage equality and staff to cost an additional flag pole.”
The non-profit group, who have been delivering services to the GBTI community for over 40 years, was awarded for their work with Q-Life and the One Life Suicide Prevention Strategy.
Cr Gerry Pule is concerned that removing the Torres Strait flag would negate the council’s work on the Town of Bassendean Reconciliation Action Plan 2012-2016 and does not support removing their flag. Cr Bridges said he did not intend to offend the Torres Strait Islander community.
The award has been welcomed by the organisations supporters. Larrissa Kozulin from Uniting Care West, the lead organsiation for the One Life program said the groups work spread beyond the LGBTI community.
“I mean no disrespect to Torres Strait Islanders, but I reckon there are far more gays and lesbians in our Town,” he told Community News. “The motion is framed so that it can be discussed and amended to suit at the next council meeting. An additional flag pole is the better option.” “Bassendean Council is not homophobic and we have an openly gay mayor, some staff members are gay and there are many gay and lesbian singles and couples in Bassendean,” Cr Bridges says, “Any opposition will likely be swamped by support.”
“The ongoing contribution that they make to the LGBTI community as well as the wider community in regards to suicide prevention ensures that everyone is supported and kept safe.” Ms Kozulin said

WA Liberal MP Ken Wyatt does not support marriage equality The member for Hasluck has told OUTinPerth that he is personally not in favour of allowing same sex couples to wed, and neither are people in his Perth electorate. Mr Wyatt, who is the first indigenous Australian to be elected to the House of Representatives, has previously been listed as ‘undecided’ on the issue at the Australian Marriage Equality website. A spokesperson for Mr Wyatt has told OUTinPerth that he sees marriage as a Christian institution that underpins society. “Ken has held extensive consultation with community groups and individuals within the electorate advocating for both perspectives, for and against. Ken has also received hundreds of emails and phone calls this year alone, and that number goes into the thousands when previous years are included. “The clear majority of feedback Ken has received is that people would prefer not to have changes to the Marriage Act.” a spokesperson said. Mr Wyatt believes that if any changes were to be made to the marriage act it should be done via a plebiscite or referendum, but his personal belief is that it should not be changed. “Personally Ken does not agree with changing the Marriage Act to reflect marriage between same sex couples. However he believes that any discrimination in accessing any services should be removed.
Christian institution, which is underpinned by tradition in our community.” a spokesperson told OUTinPerth. Mr Wyatt’s electorate of Hasluck in Perth’s eastern suburbs stretches from the north eastern suburbs of Guilford, Middle Swan and Midland, across the hills area of Kalamunda, Forrestfield and Lesmurdie, down to the south eastern suburbs of Thornlie, Maddington and Gosnells. Rodney Croome, National Director of Australian Marriage Equality said he was deeply disappointed with Mr Wyatt’s decision. “I’m deeply disappointed that Mr Wyatt has decided to remain on the wrong side of history,” Mr Croome told OUTinPerth, “His decision is particularly disappointing given the history of discrimination against Indigenous people, including former WA laws that regulated who indigenous people could and couldn’t marry on the basis of their race.” Mr Croome said Australian Marriage Equality would seek to Mr Wyatt about the negative impact his decision will have on the families in his electorate and on his vote at the next election. Mr Wyatt’s announcement comes as a new grass roots advocacy effort launches in his Hasluck electorate. Supporters of marriage equality met in Kalamunda in late August to develop advocacy strategies specific to the area.
“Ken believes that retaining the Marriage Act as it currently stands does not prevent or discourage people from entering into same sex relationships, but rather, it is simply his belief that marriage is a

Venice Mayor bans Pride parades The Mayor of Venice has declared that Pride parades will be banned from the Italian city while he is in power. “There will never be a Gay Pride in my city,” Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told a local newspaper. “Let them go and do it in Milan, or in front of their own homes.” The regions Pride parade is held in a different city each year but the newly elected mayor has made it clear that when it is Venice’s turn to host, LGBTI celebrations will not be welcome. The mayor said that pride parades were “the ultimate in kitsch” and described them as a joke.
Retailer stocks Caitlyn Jenner costume Spirit Halloween, one of USA’s biggest Halloween stores, have revealed they will be stocking costumes based on ‘I Am Cait’ star and Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner in popup stores across the country. Head of marketing for Spirit Halloween Trisha Lombardo has said that “Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.” Many have slammed the company’s decision, deeming the decision to be insensitive and transphobic. Ms Lombardo argues that the costume should be viewed no differently to those of other high-profile sporting heroes.

Warwick Rowers return The Warwick Rowers have released a short video calling for crowdfunding support for the release of their 2016 nude calendar. The organisation first launched the calendar in 2009 and has since become an internationally anticipated annual release. Originally designed to fund the rowing club, the great success of the calendar inspired the organisation to give back. In 2012, Warwick Rowers launched Sport Allies – a program that provides support for young sportspeople facing homophobia, bullying and self-esteem issues.

Plans to stop gay parents adopting Uganda is attempting to make moves to try and prevent same-sex couples from adopting children out of East African nations. Ugandan Minister for State for East African Affairs Sham Bageine, says he does not want people from countries which have achieved marriage equality to be able to adopt children from the five states of the East African Community. “Should our students be adopted by them? And because of that, if we say no then we don’t get aid? No, I don’t accept that.” Mr Bageine said, addressing members of the East African Legislative Assembly in the Ugandan Parliament. Member states of the East African Community include Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda.
UN Security Council hear LGBT plea The United Nations Security Council addressed an exclusively LGBT issue in August, centred on ISIS’ targeted persecution and violence towards the LGBT community in Iraq and Syria. Executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission fronted the council accompanied by two men from Iraq and Syria, who shared the horrors of living LGBT in ISIS occupied and adjacent regions. This hearing marks the first UN hearing with an LGBT focus.

Student takes action over homophobic textbooks A Chinese university student is taking legal action again China’s Ministry of Education claiming many school textbooks “demonise” homosexuals. 21-year-old Chin Qiuyan, a student at Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-Sen University, is fighting for the university library to remove psychology textbooks that categorise homosexuality as a mental illness, or recommend that gay and lesbian people need to be “healed.” Beijing No 1 Intermediate People’s Court have accepted the case.
“When people are [called] brave in regards to playing LGBTQ people, that’s borderline offensive. I’m never going to be considered brave for playing a straight person, and nor should I be. It’s hard to say this, because the context of the film is so deeply tragic, but for me there was a deep sense of peace on set that I had not felt in a really long time, potentially since I was a teenager and first having these really beautiful, fortunate moments in films. There was something about being out, getting to play a gay character, and getting to play a woman who is so inspiring to me—it was such an amazing experience for me. Honestly, if I played gay characters for the rest of my career, I’d be thrilled. I wish I could, honestly!” Ellen Page, Time Magazine interview
“Well, I’m not sure there is a gay [or LGBTI] community. There are gay communities and that’s one of them, one that I’m not privileged to be a part of. I’m gay, but I’m not Asian. Gay Asians have a series of particular problems that they’re coping with. What I like about those drag queens is they’re practicing Muslims. They’re down on the mat praying to Allah. And their Allah loves gay people. So if ever some Muslim says that Allah doesn’t like gay people – they need to talk to those Muslims. But it’s hard for them, desperately hard. I’m afraid religion’s never been much of a friend to gay people. Except the Quakers. Quakers have never had a problem. And yet they’re the people who are most bound by the Bible. They follow its instructions. ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill.’ They’re pacifists. Why aren’t all Christians pacifists?” Sir Ian McKellan on his experience narrating Channel 4 documentary ‘Muslim Drag Queens’

This month we called up Paul McDermott from the Doug Anthony Allstars I heard you’ve been trying to get out of doing jury duty? How do you know that! I have good sources. It’s not that I don’t believe in jury duty, it’s just that at the moment I’m working on a number of projects on at the moment that would make it very unfeasible for me to do my duty to the Australian people and the courts, so I had to wriggle out of it. I can’t help but think of someone being in the dock and looking across and seeing you at the head of the jury and thinking, “Nah, now I’m screwed”. I’d wondered about that, in my daily life I’m quite unrecognisable from the fella on telly, and that’s how most people know me. I find if I wear a suit it gives it away, but as long as I don’t wear a suit nobody recognises me. I don’t know what it is about me but I seem to just blend into the scenery, it’s a blessing and a curse. When it comes to performing political comedy, how do the politicians of today compare to those of twenty years ago? It seems like politicians now are just careerists. It doesn’t really matter what they say or do, just as long as they stay in power. It seems in the past when people agreed or disagreed it wasn’t just about having the reins of power. It was important, but people didn’t just pursue things on a statistical basis. The nature of politics has changed dramatically in the last twenty years. Does that change the nature of comedy? It doesn’t change the nature of comedy, but maybe the way you approach things. It seems that part of the faith of politics has gone. I don’t think a lot of the people of Australia have a lot of faith in the two piles of ratbags who are just tearing at each other’s throats all the time. I think both parties have proven themselves to be deceitful, self-satisfying veracious scumbags. What’s the name of your new tour? This one’s called ‘Life and Death’, somehow it’s become about a near death experience, I prefer the term ‘near-life experience’ but we’re talking about Mister Ferguson and the shortness of
breath that we’re all experiencing at this point in our existence. We’re dealing with adult concepts in a very juvenile way. Articulate idiocy. Tim’s been a great advocate for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Yes, he wants everyone to have it. He’s become a lightning rod for MS sufferers and people with other disabilities, but he rises to the challenge. Get out there and live your life. Damn the consequences, damn the naysayers and damn the people who say you don’t have control of your own destiny. Get out there and do it. When you started off did you ever think you be standing on stage with the same guys thirty years later? No! I didn’t think at this point in my life I’d be standing on stage with a cripple and a pensioner [laughs] That’s for sure, I was hoping that my life would have gone a little bit better. No seriously, it’s been great, it’s been extraordinary. The reunion tour, we didn’t know what we were doing, but it just came together naturally. We’ve always ad-libbed and improvised and the shows have come out of that, we’ve always been organic and that’s continued. It’s never a static show, it’s always changing and moving. People who come one night, might not recognise the show further down the track, or even the next night. Also with Tim with the MS, there’s another couple of elements that can lead to uncertainly, haphazardness and ultra-weird moments. Sometime we’re not sure where he is, sometimes I think he’s not sure where he is, but he’s on a regime of extraordinary heavy drugs, so his perception of the world changes pretty dramatically. I think once you know you have MS, it impacts pretty heavily on your life, it makes re-evaluate a lot of aspects of your existence. That aspect of self-scrutiny is good for comedy. The Doug Anthony All Stars: Near Death Experience is at the Regal Theatre on 23-24 October. Tickets are available at Ticketek.

399
399. What can I say? It’s been a staple on my list of drinking holes for many years. It’s intimate, it’s well set up, and the team run it extremely well. Once of the things you know you’ll always get with 399 is good service and quality drinks, and they have provided that since the get go. Having recently pulled me back to solidify itself as one of my tri-weekly venues, I have realised, again, how much they offer, and the thought and feeling that goes into their delivery. As is found with many venues now, they have put the onus back onto what the customer wants, and that is exactly what they are about. I like to eat when I drink, although I’m awful at doing so, and the food they offer matches the venue, the customer and the laid back style of the staff. Their small eats provide simple tapas choices. The bar staff, that double as your chefs, serve up little sharing options. Dumplings (don’t go past these), chorizo, sweet potato fries and Turkish bread with beetroot dip may sound simple, but they hit the spot every time. Add two types of cheese, olives and meatballs and you’ve got something for everyone who needs a little nibble on a night out. And for 3 for $19 (or $7 a piece), you really can’t go wrong. What sets them apart with food is their open house policy, meaning you can bring in food from any of the surrounding restaurants. - note the Indian across the road is absolutely killer.
Their team is knowledgeable, skilled, fast and on point at all times. They’ve created an outstanding menu, from their 40 beers to a large array of cocktails (hit the new guy Chris up for a Manhattan), and some pretty badass wines. 399 is through and through a neighbourhood bar and they are all about the space they reside in. Each year they host a Pride Parade party, they encourage you to support local venues and they want you to have a good experience. They spend a lot of time making sure they give you something different; from giving you an array of seating areas and options, to hosting local artists work around the bar. They also do events super well, which usually focuses on music, booze and/or food. Their indie nights are not to be missed (I was definitely dancing on a sofa at the last one I was attended. They’re all having great time, I’m having a great time, head down and they’ll make sure you’re having one too. 399 is at 399 William St, Northbridge. Alice Mod

The feature film ‘Holding the Man’ has had a great opening weekend box office, and it’s also receiving rave reviews for both the film and the performance of leading man Ryan Corr. The film is based on the best-selling memoir of Timothy Conigrave who shares the fifteen year long love story between himself and the captain of his High School football team John Caleo. OUTinPerth chatted to Corr when he visited Perth for a special preview screening of the film that raised money for the WA AIDS Council.
and that comes across – but you still have great affection for him at the end of the film. Was getting that balance right at the forefront of your mind?
Sometimes we would play three decades in a day and it was a matter of putting on the ‘70s wig to remind us where we were.
Beyond the book, how did you get to know Tim Conigrave?
Yeah, it really was. People are flawed, people have good and bad sides and some see more of one side than the other depending on who you are in their life. Much like balancing the humour with the tragedy in this film and finding the hope in it.
You can’t play age, but we discovered that you can play mentality.
Well of course the book was the first and foremost bible, but we also met with Tim’s family. What was very unique to this project and playing someone that existed was the opportunity to do that. To hear from his loved ones, his friends and most importantly his family about who he was within these different environments. If you asked my mum who I was, you’d get a very different answer from my sister or my best friend or an ex, so we have that experience of trying to collate all these different ideas and memories of Tim. I had three hours of audio interview of Tim after writing the book where he’s discussing particular incidents that occur in the book as well as the writing of the book itself. That was a real go-to for me… hearing Tim’s voice was paramount to understanding who he really was. Any character you play… our job is to justify and try to understand and not judge the character you are playing. We had all of these people come out and assist us in understanding who Tim Conigrave was. You can never actually become someone else, but you can do your best. One of the things that really impressed me is that he’s a flawed character, he’s a real person,
Finding the balance of characters that were real and make mistakes and have to work through them. He hurt John when they broke up and finding and understanding where they were up to in their life… those qualities were just as important as representing the parts of him that we love. How hard is it to play a teenager? Really hard man! I fit a school uniform very very differently to when I was seventeen. What struck us playing these characters is that the difference between me now and then is a difference in mentality. It’s a difference in our understanding and perhaps the way you relate to the world around you. At seventeen you think you’ve got it all figured out and as you mature, I think you pick your battles a bit more and you have a better understanding of how things will resonate with people. Of course, I had insights of what Tim was going through at that time with the book and details from his brother and sister about what was actually going on…
We spoke to Craig Stott (John Caleo) last month and he mentioned you took him on a date to meet your family? My sister had only recently come out and we thought it would be a great exercise for me to experience firsthand the difference in the way people view you if you’re queer in this society. It’s very different to the ‘70s and ‘80s but I think there’s a lot of things that resonate today. My father knew because it was actually my father’s partner’s family and we just walked in holding hands and just sat there and didn’t say anything about it one way or another – we just wanted to go in and explore what that would be about. We went on a number of dates and Craig and I would often talk about when we were first cast together as being the start of Craig and Ryan’s relationship and that was something we really had to forge in order to understand our love and find the essence of these two boys and create a bond so that when we looked at each other, we were actually seeing another person and not seeing a character – we were actually talking to someone we knew and had developed a real love for. ‘Holding the Man’ is playing at Luna Leederville. Szymon Tigersapp ‘Tigersapp’ is the debut album from folktonica artist Szymon (pronounced Shimon). From the opening track ‘Golden’ through to the final note of ‘Polen’ this album is twelve tracks of lush and beautiful music. ‘Golden’ is filled with warm guitars, gentle beats and a vocal that’s dreamy and blurry. It sets the template for a collection of tunes that range between just over two minutes in length through to four minutes. Perfect slices of dream pop. Sadly the artist is no longer with us, battling depression, Symon took his own life a few years ago and this album has been finished by his friends.
Miley Cyrus Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz
Silicon Personal Computer
Miley celebrated her VMA hosting duties by releasing 23 new tracks online, these make up her fifth album. Having recently recorded with The Flaming Lips, Cyrus has built up some serious indie cred and this collection is very intriguing. It’s a cross pollination of hip hop, folk and psychedelic sounds. While opening track ‘Dooo It’ is total MTV, it only takes a few tunes to get to ‘Something About Space Dude’ a guitar based tune with whirling organs and Miley’s distinctive vocal. Conservatives who were concerned about Miley’s gyrating with Thicke a few years ago will pass out when they hear the lyrics on these songs!
Remember the movie ‘Electric Dreams’ where a PC comes to life and starts making music. That’s what this album reminds me of. Right off the bat the computerized voice lets us know we’ll never be lonely. What follows is a bunch of catchy electronic tracks with a computerized voice, tinged with disco, soul and funk sounds. This is a project from New Zealand’s Kody Nielson, whose brother Reuban is the lead singer of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Taking the tracks one at a time is cool – but as an entire album the computerised voice wears thin.
Commanduer – Wasted sublime pop sounds Sea Moya – Do Things muted beats and fuzzy vocals with a killer bass, this track is actually all about the bass Frente Cumbiero - Chucusteady (Dub Version) From a collection of South American psychedelic hits comes this laid back tune that’s mixed by Mad Professor – very chilled Vinyl Williams – World Soul gorgeous smooth pop tune with a hint of an ‘80s vibe FKA Twiggs – In Time from her new EP this track is an intriguing collection of sounds with an oriental bent Touch Sensitive – Pizza Guy (i:cube dub mix) one of our favourite tracks from last year gets a bunch of new mixes Psychemagik – Milk and Shoes you got to put on your shoes and act like you’re feeling the groove Beach House – Beyond Love epic sad song of the month from their new album ‘Depression Cherry’ Paper Kites – I’m Lying to you ‘cause I’m lost the electronic artist goes seriously country Jimi Tenor – Blue Ural total jazz with tinkled ivories Iiro Rantala – Just like starting over intriguing jazz delivery of the John Lennon tune Andreya Triana – Lullaby (Shigeto Remix) this remix really strips the song back to its basic elements Duran Duran featuring Mr Hudson – Paper Gods epic track from the every reliable band now enjoying their fourth decade in the charts.

Max Richter Sleep Classical composer Max Richter’s new work comes in two different formats, ‘Sleep’ in a massive 31 track long opus, while ‘From Sleep’ provides a highlights package of the record. Like all of Richter’s compositions the music is subtle, slow and understated. Lose yourself in his melancholy melodies and soft ambiance, it’s an album of great beauty and minimalism. Some of the tracks clock in at over 10 minutes in length, which really gives them a change to build up slowly and take you on a daydream filled journey. At its most quiet this record becomes just a hum, while at other moments it’s filled with soaring strings.
Connections Nightclub has been building up to their big 40th birthday celebration with a series of parties celebrating each of the four decades of the club’s lifespan. We’ve already visited the dancefloor with Decadance: Last Days of Disco 75-85. At Decadance Electric Dreams 85-95 we loved hearing the sounds of KLF, Dead or Alive and Madonna. On Friday September 4th Decadance: Show Me Love will take on a trip from 1995 through to 2005 and then on October 2nd it’ll be time for Decadance: Disco Stick – a party celebrating 2005 – 2015. We asked DJ Timbee to nominate the quintessential sounds of the last decade. We Belong Together - Mariah Carey Don’t Cha” - The Pussycat Dolls feat. Snoop Dogg Rolling In The Deep” - Adele (remix versions) Anything by Nicki Minaj Most tracks by Lady Gaga from 2010 – 2011 Call Me Maybe” - Carly Rae Jepsen Get Lucky” - Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams Anything from Taylor Swift from 2014-2015
Natalie Imbruglia Male Imbruglia returns with the obligatory covers collection, thematically it’s a collection of songs previously sung by male singers. Imbruglia knows the power of a good cover, her rerecording of Ednaswap’s ‘Torn’ was massive. The album has a strong opener with Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’. Wisely the song selection avoids well known tunes, opting for lesser known songs from Josh Pyke, Damian Rice and Death Cab for Cutie. The album’s big mis-step - a ukulele version of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m in Love’ – like Robert Smith joined Mumford and Sons….argghhh. Graeme Watson

THE WOLFPACK (M)
SOUTHPAW
When Crystal Moselle met the six Angulo brothers on the street in New York, they were all wearing Reservoir Dogs suits and sun glasses. Then when she found out that they were on a rare outing from their apartment, the brothers (there’s also a sister who is rarely seen) became the subjects of her awardwinning documentary and she became the first guest to visit their permanently locked apartment. Their domineering Peruvian father had kept his children protected from the world and one year they didn’t even leave the apartment. Home-schooled by their mother, they learnt about the world by watching copious amounts of films and making their own recreations. The doco is fascinating and disturbing, though it doesn’t venture into the darker sides of this family. We watch these charismatic boys become young men who rebel against their imprisonment and venture out into the world. It is compelling viewing.
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal makes an impressive leap from the subdued and somewhat creepy characters he is famous for. He lost a huge amount of weight to play last year’s intense ambulance chaser in ‘Nighcrawler’ and now he has bulked up with rippling muscles to become boxer Billy Hope. The 34 year old’s character takes a pummeling as he fights for much more than a boxing title. Boxing has brought Billy’s life from an orphanage to having it all, including a loving wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) and beautiful daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). Of course when things get tough, he loses everything he has worked for and his friends all desert him. With the help of the owner of a run-down local gym, former fighter Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), the left-handed boxer attempts to climb back up again. The fight scenes are raw and bloody as the emotional rollercoaster of Billy’s fortunes batter the audience.

THE GIFT (M)
Meryl Streep channels Suzie Quatro and Joan Jett as the aging rocker who left her three children in search of rock‘n’roll fame and fortune. Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl Streep) didn’t end up with the fame or fortune, even though she did get her lead guitarist (Australian rocker Rick Springfield) as a love interest. She also got three resentful adult children – Julie (Mamie Gummer) who is suicidal after a recent breakup, Josh (Sebastian Stan) who is about to get married and Adam (Nick Westrate) who is gay. When Ricki visits her ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline) and her estranged children, she has to face the music. The film is an awkward mix of comedy and drama that resorts to the healing power of rock‘n’roll to solve all the problems. Fortunately it has the ultimately watchable Meryl Streep at the centre it is great to watch Streep on screen with her real life daughter Mamie Gummer.
Soon after moving into their new upmarket house in Los Angeles, Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) bump into someone Simon was at high school with. Simon doesn’t recognise Gordo (Joel Edgerton) at first, but when he does Gordo sends gifts to their house – each one topped with a red rosette. It is an uncomfortable situation as the Simon and Robyn tolerate the overly friendly Gordo for quite a while before putting a stop to his intrusions. Slowly the three main characters reveal more of their personalities until events from the past are revealed and the audience’s sympathies are thrown into upheaval. Best not to reveal too much of this fantastically intimate thriller, other than there is only one screamout-loud moment. Written and directed by Australian actor Joel Edgerton, this first feature film will shoot him into the stratosphere of the Hollywood elite and should not be missed.

TV Like many of the characters on the popular series, it seems Rose O’Connel will also be harbouring a secret. Alongside her acting career Harding has also been a vocal advocate for marriage equality. She made her first appearance on television when as a child she appeared in a segment on ‘Play School’ with her two mums. At the time it was extremely controversial to feature a family with same sex parents. One thing that Harding is passionate about is ensuring that the experiences of children raised in same sex families is clearly shown to politicians. In recent weeks Katy Faust, a Christian American raised by a same sex couples has toured Australia arguing against marriage equality. Harding says that Faust does not speak for the majority of Australian children with same sex parents. “In this debate, were really being talked about as hypotheticals, and what people like Katy Faust don’t recognise when they’re talking very vitriolically [sic] in a public forum is that there are thousands of children of same sex parents sitting at home hearing what other people have to say about their families in hypothetical sense, and they are incredibly homophobic and discriminatory.” Harding said.
Last year the future of Australian TV show ‘A Place to Call Home’ looked uncertain, but now it’s found a new home on Foxel and filming for the third season is underway. Joining the cast of the show set in the conservative 1950’s is actress Brenna Harding. Best known for her starring role in the Tv show ‘Puberty Blues’ Harding told OUTinPerth that she’s happily moved from the ‘70’s to the ‘50s. “It’s been interesting, I’m also going from 1970’s teenage culture to being a maid at a very rich household in the 1950s. It’s hard to believe that they are only twenty years apart, it seems like a very radical change.” Harding said. In the near future Harding assures us that she does get to do some projects where she gets to play a character in the present day.
“They have to go to school tomorrow and they’re also going to reap the percussions of that in everyday life and it’s going to affect how they see their own families.” To make her point Harding recently traveled to Canberra alongside Director Maya Newell and Producer Charlotte Mars for a screening of the documentary ‘Gayby Baby’, presented especially for politicians. “I’ve got some present day roles coming up and it’s been weird going into costume and them fitting me out with modern day clothes.” Harding laughs.
Harding said she hates the idea that a referendum may lead to that type of discussion being publicly funded by the government.
On ‘A Place to Call Home’ Harding plays a new character called Rose O’Connell.
“I don’t think that’s fair on children sitting at home with families that have really love them.”
“She comes along and comes to Ash Park to work as a maid, and she has a few different connections with other characters in the house.” Harding said. “It seems like she’s just come along to work at the house, but there’s more to it.”
‘A Place to Call Home’ returns to Foxtel’s SOHO this month, tune in at 6:30pm on Sunday 13th September to see the Season 2 finale with a new ending, the new season starts on Sunday 27th September at 6:30pm. Graeme Watson

It’s an image that has passed across almost everyone’s Facebook feed, three young boys on a motivational style poster. They look like they’re off for their first day of school. Underneath it proclaims “One of these kids will grow up to be fabulous!” “That was me and my brothers in Karratha, it’s probably around 1995 and I think I was about seven or eight.” Local guy Isaac Turner shares with OUTinPerth. A few years ago Isaac uploaded the photos to a blog named ‘Born This Way’, a blog that asked readers to share a photo that showed signs of their gayness at an early age. “I don’t know how it became a meme, but a couple of months after I’d uploaded it someone saw it and sent it back to me.”
The photo of Isaac and his brothers has spread across the globe, Isaac noted that even Gina Liano from the Real House Wives of Melbourne had shared it on her page. Isaac admits that the photo is now completely out of his control but there is also a dark side to his unexpected fame. “Sometimes people make comments about my brothers, saying they look like psychopaths.” Isaac said, “They were just kids too.” Isaac assures us that without a doubt this is the campest photo in his families archive and there aren’t any others to be shared in the future.
