BARBIE Q 09

JUST GET ON WITH IT There was a predictable echo of complaints about retired Army leader Lieutenant-General David Morrison being awarded Australian of the Year.

essentially reduced the excise to being an incredibly expensive opinion poll to tell us what we already know. Only politicians could conjure up this situation.

Not long after he was given the nation’s top honour, Morrison told reporters, he, like the large majority of Australians, was in favour of marriage equality.

There is of course what Liberal Senator Concetta FierravantiWells refers to as the large silent majority. Presumably a massive group of Australians who for over a decade now have not participated in opinion polls, read newspapers, attended protests or called their local politician on this issue.

Conservative groups moaned about the Australian of the Year awards being hijacked by minority groups, and claimed the award no longer represented ‘the real Australia’. One group asked. “Why can’t we have an Australian of the Year who supports traditional marriage?” Well here’s some breaking news, an Australian of the Year who supported leaving our nations laws on marriage out of step with the rest of the world - would also be a representative of a minority group. Poll after poll shows that an overwhelming the majority of Australians want the laws to be changed. Recent reports have also highlighted that the majority of politicians would support changing the laws. Why our Prime Minister is superglued to the all-round bad idea of a plebiscite is a bit of a mystery.

TWISTED VAUDEVILLE

11

While conservative MPs might think such a group exists, it’s probably a big call to presume these mythical Australians are against the idea - or even more unfathomable is the belief that they haven’t even heard of the proposal. The arguments against marriage equality are becoming increasingly ridiculous, and by the time we get to the proposed plebiscite they are sure to be entirely ludicrous.

LIMBO 18

The time is now? No, the time is way overdue. Next rally I really think we need to change the chat to: What do we want? Marriage Equality. When do we want it? About 5 years ago. Graeme Watson editor@outinperth.com

The plebiscite is non-binding and a number of government politicians have already declared that they will ignore its outcome and still oppose marriage equality anyway. This has

Hundreds of everyday Australians were acknowledged for their community work and contribution to society in the Australia Day honours last month. Among the recipients was local legend Ivan King. Mr King has been awarded for his service to the performing arts as an archivist and historian. Speaking to OUTinPerth Mr King said he felt very proud to receive the Order of Australia award. “I felt proud of my creation, proud that I’d created something which is there for all to see.” Mr King said. Mr King, who was a theatrical performer in the 1970’s, has been working as a historian since 1980. As the curator of the Museum of

Performing Arts, located at His Majesty’s Theatre, Mr King looks after over 40,000 historical artefacts. Mr King said one of his favourite pieces in the collection which celebrates the city’s theatrical and cultural identity was a costume worn by Dame Joan Sutherland in the opera Lakmé. The costume was made by the famous costume maker Barbara Matera and designed by Desmond Digby. Mr King said it was a great piece to show the hard work that goes on behind the scenes in the theatre world. Mr King said creating an ANZAC exhibition called ‘ANZAC Coves’ which commemorated the part that entertainers played in World War I was another achievement he was particularly proud of. “It was both a

social and political statement.” Mr King said. Keeping the news that he’d been selected for the award a secret was quite a challenge for the affable curator. “I really should get another one for being discreet” Mr King joked, saying that over the Christmas period he’d been spending time with family members and had been like “a balloon with too much air.” Next time you’re in the city visit the Museum of Performing Arts underneath His Majesty’s Theatre and see Ivan’s latest exhibition. If a methamphetamine dealer set up a stall on the corner of your street, complete with a sign advertising their business and testimonials from satisfied clients, would it get your attention? Last year, Jay Morris, a gay man in NSW, suggested that the Australian government should shut down social networking sites like Grindr unless they proactively took steps to ban users who were openly selling drugs on the site. The suggestion made international headlines as LGBT news sites around the world repeated the suggestion made by the 24 year old former TV presenter. Morris had waged his own two yearlong battle with an addiction to ice. During that time he’d turned to being a sex worker to support his addiction and inadvertently been filmed taking the drug and having sex, the footage later appearing on a website. Morris’ position is that social media sites contribute to the problem by not actively taking down profiles that are breaking the law. For people trying to break free from addiction the easy availability of the drug is a serious problem. Does the same challenge exist in Perth? OUTinPerth randomly searched Grindr to see how prevalent profiles overtly selling drugs were. It didn’t take us long to find a stack of Grindr uses offering marijuana, methamphetamines and a variety of pills. Profiles with images of smoke, clouds and pills were easy to spot. One user creatively used the character of Monkey Magic, who travelled on a cloud, to advertise their wares. In their bio lines one user promoted that a delivery service was available if you placed an order, while another boasted they their product was superior to other suppliers. Speaking to OUTinPerth Morris said as a recovering addict his experience of apps like Grindr is that you are bombarded with offers of drugs. “People don’t realise that it is life and death for people who go through rehab.” Morris said.

Morris described the process of going through rehab as the hardest thing someone can try to undertake. “It’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do in your life, but it’s also the most rewarding thing you’ll do in your life. It’s challenging, its eye opening and it’s an emotional experience. “I say it’s a bit like being a baby, you have to learn to do everything again, and you have to learn how to walk, and talk and eat – without being under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It is really like being reborn.” Morris said. Morris said the road to recovery is a tough one, and while he acknowledges everyone is responsible for their own choices, it is difficult to say no to drugs when you’re an addict. Since he first raised his concerns last year he said the response from the LGBTIQ+ community had been disappointing. “The vast majority [of responses] have been negative.” Morris said, “A lot of people have said ‘it’s your choice what you do’ – and yes, I did choose to take the drug in the first place, but I didn’t choose to become an addict. People also say it’s not Grindr’s fault that you use drugs, and I know that, but it does fuel the addiction by making it easier to get drugs.” The most recent official figures on the use of methamphetamines come from the 2013 National Drug Strategy Household survey which reported that use of the drug was not increasing but user were taking it more often. There was also an increase of the drug being consumed in the more powerful crystal state than powdered form. OUTinPerth asked WA’s Police Minister Liza Harvey if the amount of illegal drugs being sole online was a concern and what plans she had to tackle the problem. “All law enforcement agencies are aware of the issue of drugs being brought and sold online.” Minister Harvey said. “Much of the work undertaken by WA Police in this area cannot be discussed due to operational reasons, however if a complaint is received by police, further inquiries will be carried out into the matter.’ WA Police and Grindr were contacted regarding this article. The Seven Sins of BarbieQ Coals is a commanding presence. An indomitable force on stage, the queen is expanding her skillset and delving into the world of Circus. Along with fellow Connections mainstays Kinetica, known for showing off their acrobatic talents during the club’s Sideshow nights – Barbie is ready to titillate your senses with her salacious new Fringe show. Is this your first Fringe show? It is! Fringe has always been on my bucket list. Last year I thought, “I’m going to watch as much Fringe as I can” and then I can piece together in my mind a concept and get an idea that might be a little bit different. I didn’t want to propose a show and say “OK, I’m just going to put a drag show on” and that’s it. My boyfriend does circus and I’ve just started doing that kind of training and I thought I’d love to combine the two. What can audiences expect from ‘Sinsuality’? I wanted to do something a little risqué because there’s no point in doing something PC, because that’s just not me at all, so I thought I’d combine the seven deadly sins but try and make them sexy and combine it with sexual fetish. A lot of people would think of gluttony and think it’s just some disgusting person that’s going to eat food but I wanted to make it a lot more positive and sexy. The gluttony section is actually a beautiful burlesque girl, her name’s Sugar Du Joure and she’s just incredible. She’s designed this incredible costume and it’s a great twist on the theme and it’s just fabulous. We’ve also got Ruby from Bobbi’s Pole Studio doing wrath as a pole-dancing mistress. We’ve got a lot great acts because I wanted to choose the best people that I could. As the ring-mistress, did you choreograph the entire show? Each act has their own thing. I pieced the show together but we’ve all worked together as a unit to discuss music. The sound is like a rollercoaster because we don’t want all the music to be the same. I chose each sin, allocated it. I’m producing with Bec and Sarah from Kinetica and my partner Sam has been consulting. We come up with the sin, we come up with the colour scheme, we work together to choose music and each act has been working on their own skill. It’s a group effort! Are there any other Fringe shows you are dying to see? Obviously I love Kinetica and they’re doing their own independent show called ‘Dark Matter’. I love Briefs! Every year I love Briefs. I just bought my tickets – I know I get an artist’s pass but I love to pay for things because I know it can be a difficult time and there’s so much to go and see. The other thing is Le Gateau Chocolat, I just love him, I think he’s a pistol – and of course our local acts, DJ Feminem (Mad As Hell) and Ginava (C.D. & Machè). There’s just so much to look at! Watch Ringmistress BarbieQ and her troupe sin to win in Sinsuality at The Lunar Sensation from Monday 15th – Sunday 21st February. Tickets available from Fringeworld.com.au.

World Famous Burlesque Hour! The World Famous Burlesque Hour is currently in its 11th year of wowing audiences across the globe, from Australia to Cuba. The show has been described as the world’s most provocative variety show, subverting the male gaze and celebrating women through performance.

Long serving member of the travelling family Azaria Universe has been with the show since its inception, having trained in Moscow and worked with CircusOz, she is a veteran of her craft. Azaria spoke to OUTinPerth ahead of their Fringe World performance. “The show has a huge heart,” Azaria says. “The way the audience is invited in, we really treasure the audience and want to take them on a journey. The work is created to celebrate humanity, to celebrate humans, to celebrate women and joyousness and all the different forms of female bodies. Some of it’s really hilarious and some is just ridiculous and beautiful and sad – it has many, many layers.” The line-up includes dancing star Holly Durant, who Azaria is excited to announce will be singing this year – as well as Regina Simes, Rockie Stone and Azaria herself. “Regina Simes is our new performer this time around,” Azaria beams proudly. “She does a character called Uta, it’s a piece that she used to perform in a hotel room where they would be staying in the room and the show would happen in there and the audience came in and had this crazy journey with her. She would get changed and have a breakdown and all this crazy stuff.” Azaria herself has been performing what she describes as hardcore feminist performances since the early ‘90s. “Some of the pieces we originally made in the performance space and performed at underground clubs in Sydney – a lot of those pieces are still in the show. They’re my rockstar pieces, they go down very well!” Leigh Hill The World Famous Burlesque Hour will be at the West Australian Spiegeltent from Wednesday 10th February. Burlesque has had an explosion of popularity in recent years and Fringe World 2016 has many different kinds of performances showcasing the art form, but step aside girls, Boylesque is also gaining popularity. Musician Lee Williams will entertain the crowds, dynamic burlesque performer Aurora Galore is locked in to perform and there’s a stack of other entertainers schedule to appear. Drag star Swish Eveready will keep the day’s proceedings running smoothly. Pride WA said Fairday will be the highlight of the Fringe World festival with over 4000 attendees expected. Last year the event was named joint winner of the best community event at the festival’s awards. Pride WA President Andrew Barker said a big focus of this year’s event would be quality entertainment. “Fairday will feature something for everybody and there will never be a dull moment” Mr Barker said. “This year we are focusing on putting a little more ‘camp’ into the entertainment, as well as having less talk and more music on stage.” A key part of Pride WA’s strategy for delivering Fairday is making sure it’s a family friendly event, included in the activities program for the day is a plethora of kids events. Pride’s Vice President Michelle Rogers couldn’t hide her excitement about the upcoming community event. Ms Rogers said the organization had listened to the feedback from previous years and tried to build on the success of the event. On area that the committee got a lot of feedback on was the lack of shade in the park. To make more shaded areas attendees can now bring in their own beach umbrellas and there will be designated areas for picnics. “It’s always on one hottest days of the year.” Ms Rogers said, “We’re bringing in a lot more shaded areas but we’re also encouraging people to bring their beach umbrellas too.” Pride Fairday is staged on Sunday 7 February in Hyde Park from 11am – 6pm. Twisted Vaudeville Circus present their show The Birdcage: Boylesque edition throughout this year’s Fringe Festival. The show features some of the biggest names on the international scene alongside acclaimed local talents.

Trash Valentine told us that what he loves most about performing is having over the top costumes and then doing something in the performance that nobody else would considering doing while wearing the outfit.

Local boylesque star Trash Valentine started performing just a year ago but has quickly embraced the fun theatricality of burlesque.

“Normally when someone does something like a fan dance it’s very sexy and sultry, but my approach is to be very cheeky, it’s very tongue in cheek, it’s such a parody of what’s normally done.” Trash Valentine said.

Valentine is the alter-ego of local guy Blake Edward, who has spent many years looking on to the stage supporting his long term partner Ryan, who until her recent retirement, was well known Perth drag star Fab Panache. Trash Valentine said stepping into the spotlight was something that happened quite unexpectedly. “I was a bit of an impulse, I’d see burlesque through Ryan/ Panache working with Twisted Vaudeville Circus. It wasn’t until he pulled me up onstage for one of the audience participation games that I got involved.“ Trash Valentine said. ‘I was blind drunk…they play this came called ‘interpretive dance’ where they play a song and you have to dance to the music. My first instinct was to push all the other contestants off stage and then start twerking like Miley Cyrus.” Trash Valentine revealed. The producers of the show were so impressed with his performance they asked him to consider joining the show, and hence the character of Trash Valentine was born.

Trash Valentine said the embryonic boylesque scene is challenging many notions of gender. “Women are seen as sex symbols, they are seen as very sexual, and that women are there for men, but for a man to be sexual, for a man to be anything other than masculine, that’s not really seen anywhere else.” Also appearing in the show is Australia’s Mr Boylesque 2015 Charlie D. Barkle who will be bringing his triple threat talents to the stage alongside 2012’s King of Boylesque Russell Bruner (who features on the cover of this month’s issue) and faux-boy Lou Henry Hoover. Catch The Birdcage: Boylesque Edition’ at The Empyrean Function Centre / Metcalfe Playhouse as part of Fringe World on February 5,6,12,13,19,20 and 21. “I liked the name Valentine because I thought it was romantic and cute, then I was looking online and saw a show in the US that was described as ‘all trash’ and I thought ‘that’s brilliant!’ I’d love to be described as ‘all trash’.

Mixing in the Pink Connections resident, DJ Roski has launched a new podcast. The podcast seeks to highlight great underground DJs.

So Loquacious Last month the team here at OUTinPerth launched our new podcast ‘So Loquacious’. The podcast which can be downloaded from iTunes and Soundcloud is just one of many audio products created for the local LGBTIQ audience.

It’s a Queer Thing

‘We really wanted to create a space where alongside reporting news, culture and current affairs, we could also facilitate discussions about the issues.” Editor Graeme Watson said.

OUTinPerth’s podcast is not the only new audio service launched in the last month. ‘It’s a Queer Thing’ is a new internet based radio broadcast that has begun on Tuesday nights.

Each episode features the magazines’ staff and a guest from the local community who have a conversation about events of the previous week. The first guests in the eight episode series have included community broadcaster Paul van Lieshout, transgender advocate Bailey Lions and Mark Reid from the WA AIDS Council.

Perth’s ‘first internet radio station’ features music, guests, giveaways and a whole lot of fun, the show can be accessed via its website and can also be listened to via mobile phones. The new show appears to be taking on longstanding RTRFM show ‘All Things Queer’ by launching with a very similar logo to the community radio program.

Listen to the show at www.soundcloud.com/outinperth or subscribe on iTunes

All Things Queer RTRFM’s radio program for the local queer community is about celebrate its sixth birthday. The weekly show, which airs at 10pm on Monday nights, features interviews, music and commentary from local LFBTIQ+ community members. The show often features news on activities being undertaken by local community groups and highlights local LGBTIQ+ musicians. The show can be listen to on FM radio, via the internet and episodes from previous weeks can be replayed. Find out more about the show at www.rtrfm.com.au

“To be a successful DJ in the queer scene requires a lot of shameless self-promotion, and with the current rampant use of social media, some DJs are becoming famous more because of their marketing ability, rather than their ability to move a dance floor, while others remain in obscurity despite their brilliance.” DJ Roski said of the show’s aim. ‘Mixing in the Pink’ is a grassroots style podcast that explores the broad spectrum of music played within the queer scene, featuring candid interviews and music, Roski said this is a radio show without the bullshit. Check out the show at mixinginthepink.podomatic.com and follow the show on Facebook.

PM’s electorate don’t support plebiscite plan Coalition MPs Voters in the Prime Ministers own electorate of Wentworth don’t support his plan for a will ignore plebiscite plebiscite on marriage equality. Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie has joined her voice with Liberal Senators Eric Abetz and Cory Bernardi, vowing to vote no on marriage equality legislation despite the outcome the proposed nation-wide plebiscite. Senator McKenzie asserted that it was her right as a backbench MP to vote with her conscience and she would stick to her record of voting against same-sex marriage. “As a backbench senator, I can exercise my conscience on every single vote that comes before the Senate and I do,” Ms McKenzie told media. “I vote with my conscience on every issue and my conscience on this matter is that I would vote against same-sex marriage.” Fellow Coalition members have made similar claims. Senator Eric Abetz told media that he would reserve his judgement until after the results of the plebiscite had been determined, while Senator Cory Bernardi has said he would not vote in favour of same-sex marriage; “Even if the public voted for it.” Greens LGBTI spokesperson Senator Robert Simms says these comments have exposed the plebiscite as a total sham.

A poll conducted by Reachtel on behalf of Australian Marriage Equality (AME) found voters in Malcolm Turnbull’s electorate of Wentworth are largely for marriage equality and overwhelmingly against a national unbinding plebiscite. The survey has found 63% of Wentworth voters support marriage equality and want an immediate free vote in parliament, with only 9% preferring a plebiscite. Rodney Croome, National Director of AME called on the Prime Minister to listen to the people of his own electorate. “Malcolm Turnbull knew from the start that a plebiscite was an expensive and divisive attempt to delay marriage equality and now it’s clear his constituents agree with that.” Mr Croome said.

Hundreds of LGBT couples wed in Aus at British consulate Same-sex marriages performed at British embassies and consulates have been occurring on a regular basis since they first became an option in June 2014.

Last month Thomas Sharpe and Koko Firman Ariyanto married in Sydney. They were the 200th couple to take advantage of the British laws and have a wedding in Australia.

“The idea that LNP Senators would advocate spending $160 million on a national plebiscite and then ignore the result is totally absurd,” Senator Simms said.

Australian Marriage Equality National Director, Rodney Croome congratulated the couple on their nuptials describing it as a landmark moment for both them and Australia.

The Greens and Australian Marriage Equality are calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to allow a conscience vote in lieu of a plebiscite.

“I congratulate Thomas Sharpe and Koko Firman Ariyanto on what is a landmark moment for them and for Australia.” Mr Croome said.

“A plebiscite was meant to smooth over divisions in the Coalition but clearly it is having the opposite effect,” AME national director Rodney Croome said in a statement.

Tying the knot at Perth’s British Consulate in January was Scottish couple Graham Spence and Marc Sneddon.

“We call on Mr Turnbull to allow marriage equality legislation to be debated in parliament as soon as possible so the reform can pass and Australia can move on.”

The couple decided to have their wedding Australia so friends and family could be invited to the ceremony. Marc and Graham have been escaping Scotland’s cold winters for many years now with annual trips down under.

‘Fifteen years a go when we first came to Australia we though Australia was so far ahead, but in the last few year’s it’s really gone backwards.” Graham said. “I know the people really want it, and it makes you wonder why it hasn’t happened.” The couple said they hoped by choosing to have their wedding in Australia more people would see the need for equality for all people.

Thousands protest against same-sex unions

Vietnam end ban on samesex marriage

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Rome to speak against a proposed bill that will allow legal recognition of civil unions in Italy. The bill is due to be voted on in February and has been a divisive issue in Italian Parliament for many months. Organiser Simone Pillon says the people want the whole bill withdrawn, and will not accept amendments. “We cannot let children pay for the desires or caprices of adults,” Pillon said, “Children need to have a father and a mother.” Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had pledged to pass a law by the end of 2015, but has faced an unexpectedly fierce opposition to the move.

UK

Vietnam have kicked off 2016 by ending the nations ban on same-sex marriages. The Vietnamese government revoked the legislation that once banned marriages for same-sex couples on January 1st this year. There is no legislation in place that ensures same-sex marriages will be legally recognised, though the move is a step forward for Vietnam’s LGBTIQ community and the wider LGBT community in South East Asia. Moves are being made in neighbouring China, as a court in the populous Furong district has accepted the country’s first same-sex marriage case. Also in the region, Taiwan has elected the nation’s first female president, who is an open supporter of marriage equality.

Labor Senator Penny Wong, The Monthly

“Let’s face it, Abbott is a politician who is so conservative he makes TAIWAN Taiwan’s new president John Howard look like Karl supports marriage equality Marx.”

Peter Tatchell defends bakery’s freedom to choose

Prominent LGBTIQ+ activist Peter Tatchell has penned a piece for ‘The Guardian’ explaining why he supports a Northern Irish bakery’s right to refuse to make a cake with a pro-marriage equality slogan. Ashers Bakery in Belfast was found guilty of discrimination in 2015 and the case is about to be appealed. Tatchell says while he wishes to defend the gay community, he also wants to defend freedom of conscience, expression and religion. “The law suit against the bakery was well-intended,” he writes, “It sought to challenge homophobia. But it was a step too far. It pains me to say this, as a long-time supporter of the struggle for LGBT equality in Northern Ireland, where same-sex marriage and gay blood donors remain banned.” Tatchell argues that the customer’s request was denied not because he was gay, but because of the message he had asked for. “There is no evidence that his sexuality was the reason Ashers declined [the] order,” he wrote.

“In Australia, we can achieve marriage equality by rewriting a few dozen words in the Marriage Act. We don’t need a referendum, a plebiscite or a contest in our highest court. We need political leadership”

Tsai Ing-wen has become the first female president of Taiwan, with her Democratic Progressive Party winning leadership of the nation. The 59-year-old politician has been a staunch supporter of marriage equality in her home country, showing her support for Taiwan Pride with a short video last year. “Before love, everyone is equal. I am Tsai Ing-wen, and I support marriage equality,” she states in the clip. “Let everyone be able to freely love and pursue happiness.” Two Taiwanese cities, Kaohsiung and Taipei, have an agreement to acknowledge same-sex partnerships that will be recognised in both districts. Ms Tsai has evaded questions about her own sexual orientation in the past, stating that an answer would make her “an accomplice of sexual suppression.”

Greens Senator Robert Simms

The fantastic cabaret circus show ‘Limbo’ has taken up residence in the brand new Elizabeth Quay precinct and it’s a theatrical marvel. OUTinPerth chatted to German contortionist Tigris about the show that has wowed audiences around the world. “Limbo is a show that lives around the music, we have three fabulous musicians who set the whole tone for the atmosphere and the whole show.” Tigris said. “What I love about Limbo most is it’s small, it’s a cast with not many people, but everyone is so talented, and we’re on stage for almost the whole show which is quite different for the audience. “When you leave the tent you feel like you really know the performers, and I like that. I’m the contortionist, but I’m involved in so many other parts of the show and that adds a lot of fun.” Watching Tigris bend and twist his body is a wonder of its own, he displays unbelievable strength, which is matched with mind defying flexibility. Watching him twist and coil into seemingly impossible positions, you can’t help but wonder if he ever gets stuck in an odd position. “I never get stuck, but you have days when you’re not as flexible as others, but thank God, in Australia during summertime it’s so easy to

COME IN FOR A MEAL & LIVE MUSIC! Who was St Valentine, and why do our thoughts turn to romance on 14 February? It was not until Chaucer (1343-1400) asserted that Valentine’s is the day on which birds mate that the day became associated with romantic love.

Jack Dennis - Every 1st Saturday of the month

Massina Miller - Friday nights of every month 14 February originally commemorated a priest, Valentine, put to death for his Christian faith. There are a number of saints of that name, but the one who connects to lovers is the Valentine who conducted ‘illegal’ weddings, in the reign of Claudius II (late 3rd century), who, allegedly, forbad Roman soldiers to marry. Valentine is said to have conducted the marriages of soldiers and their sweethearts before the soldiers went to war. For this he was executed.

In Christian (late) antiquity the practice of adelphopoiesis (‘brother-making’), the ‘wedding’ of a same-sex pair with vows under God, is an area much debated. John Boswell in his Same Sex Unions in Premodern Europe (Villard, 1994) argued, at least, that same-sex couples used this convention to disguise what were in fact consummated same-sex relationships. The 4th century soldiers Bacchus & Sergius (pictured) were knit together by adelphopoiesis. They were martyred; not for being a same-sex couple, but for being Christians.

Deeper in Western antiquity, Plato in his Symposium (c. 380 BC) considers the claim that army units made up of samesex couples are more resilient than other units because the lovers fight to protect each other. The Sacred Band of Thebes (4th century BC) was an elite military unit made up of 150 same-sex couples, and its prestige and prowess influenced contemporary attitudes to ‘gays in the military’. Although Roman civilisation did not value same-sex pair-bonding as Greek culture did, it seems that Roman soldiers did not generally marry. Claudius II never issued the edict forbidding soldiers to marry, but in practice they tended not to: long years away from home were not conducive to wife and family.

On Sunday 14 February St George’s Cathedral and The Treasury Hotel, adjacent heritage buildings on St George’s Terrace, collaborate to offer couples (same-sex or mixed; military or civilian) an exquisite Valentine’s evening. 5pm Choral Evensong of St Valentine, sung by St George’s Cathedral Consort, is followed by a champagne reception on the lawn of the newly-opened Cathedral Square. Evensong and Reception are free. Thereafter couples may take advantage of the special Valentine’s menus in either of The Treasury’s two award-winning restaurants: Wildflower and Post. TV music “I started to do a lot of EDM and minimal beats, it just opened a whole new world that I hadn’t been exposed to previously.” Georgi said. “I feel that this new EP really sounds like Georgi Kay, it is the purest form of me that’s been recorded. It captures my inspirations and influences, which is why I called it ‘Origins’, as well as putting a mark on me and saying ‘This is me, listen.’”

Georgi Kay has been locked away writing tunes and experimenting with electronic sounds, taking her time to work out what kind of an artist she wants to be. Now she’s ready to share her brand new EP ‘Origins’ and take on the world. Back in 2010 Georgi Kay caught the attention of the local music industry when she won the prestigious WAM Song of the Year competition. Her tender song ‘Breakfast in Bedlam’ was suddenly getting airplay on indie radio stations and she was hailed as a new artist to watch, she was also still in High School.

“For the last few years I was writing a lot, discovering my sound and collaborating with a lot of different people. It was quite an immersive experience for me to figure out who I am as an artist, and who I am as a person, and what I represent as an artist.” Georgi said when she caught up with OUTinPerth.

Since then the singer songwriter’s career has taken some unexpected steps, from collaborating with hip hop band The Stoops, to scoring a massive dance hit ‘In My Mind’ with Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl, she appeared in Jane Campions suspenseful mini-series ‘Top of the Lake’ and scored support slots for some massive tours including Ed Sheeran. Clubfeet and Alpine.

Georgi said she’d been on a huge musical journey since her career started, experimenting with different sounds, but songwriting has always been central to her artistic output.

While some artists are rushing to get their next record out, Georgi Kay has been playing the long game, spending a lot of time in recent years in London writing songs, she signed globally to Parlophone Records and she’s taken her time to make her new EP just the way she wanted it.

Georgi wrote all the songs on the EP and coproduced it with her close friend Rob Connolly, a producer who has worked with everyone from Celine Dion to Tina Arena, Justin Timberlake and Destiny’s Child. “It was very exciting to be able to ‘get out of my own head’, but at the same time be working with someone who understood the messages that I was trying to convey. I really love producing and sitting though different synth sounds and saying ‘well that’s not dark enough’ or ‘that needs to be beefier’.” A darker sound is something that permeates the newest songs, something that Georgi links to her love of scary films and classic Gothic literature. “I’m a big fan of horror films and sci-fi” Georgi said. “’God of a Girl’, I was inspired after I watched both ‘Carrie’ films and read Stephen Kings book.” “My inspirations come from those sort of films like ‘Dracula’ and ‘Frankenstein’. I wrote ‘Give Me Love’ after a pretty rough breakup a couple of years ago that I was going through. I was reading Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein at the time, and I got obsessed with the idea that you could reanimate dead matter and stitch together the best bits of everything, and create something whole again. Some dark stuff comes up when I’m creating things.”

“I would say in the beginning I was a singer song writer with an acoustic vibe, and for me that was about exploring my songwriting, but I always wanted to get up and dance, I have so much energy.” Georgi said. In 2012 she collaborated with house music artists Ivan Gough and Feelixpawl and they scored a massive global dance hit with the song ‘In My Mind’. Georgi said the tune was a catalyst for bringing more electronic sounds into her music.

Georgi Kay’s new EP ‘Origins’ is out on February 5th.

Patrick Cowley Muscle Up Producer Patrick Cowley made a lot of great disco songs, of particular note is his work with Sylvester. Cowley died of an AIDS related illness in 1982 but lesser known tracks he made are still being discovered. Alongside his work for the dance floor it’s been discovered that he also created some soundtracks for porn films. This is the second collection to be released following ‘School Daze’ that came out two years ago.

‘Muscle Up’ is a mixed bag, some of it sounds like the lost soundtrack to a 1970’s episode ‘Doctor Who’ but other tracks are brilliant. ‘The Jungle Dream’ is a 13 minute opus of bird noises, percussion and jungle drums with a shimmering disco groove beneath. ‘Deep Inside You’ (what a title!) is a slow building track filled with synthesizers, and ‘Mockingbirds Dream No2’ has a trippy hallucinogenic vibe. The highlight though is an early instrumental version of ‘Somebody to Love Tonight’ which would go on to be one of Sylvester’s best tunes. GW

Shamir - Hungry Like the Wolf our favourite singer celebrates joining Duran Duran’s tour by covering one of their biggest tunes Katy B featuring Four Tet and Floating Points – Calm Down the best producers in the world are all on Katy B’s new record, here’s the first taste, it’s awesome Rhianna – Same Old Mistakes surprising cover of a tune from Perth band Tame Impala Pet Shop Boys – Inner Sanctum first track from their forthcoming album ‘Super’ Seude – No Tomorrow Britpop survivors are back with their seventh album – rocking Nils Landgren featuring Janis Siegel – Someewhere a beautiful and laid back jazz take on the tune from ‘West Side Story’ featuring Janis Siegel from Manhattan Transfer Pablo Nouvelle featuring Lulu James – All I Need smooth piano, soulful vocals, heavy drums Jessy Lanza – It Means I Love You this sounds like it was recorded in 1978, but it’s fresh really Fufanu – Ballerina in the Rain (Damon Albarn Remix) some Icelandic pop remixed by the Blur front man Underworld – Exhale unexpected rock track from electronic music heroes Mono Junk – Panic of the Disco Fan cold electro synths prevail Kim Wilde – Love Will Keep Us Together guilty pleasure

Natalie Merchant Paradise is There

Charlie Hilton Palana

In 1993 Natalie Merchant quit 10,000 Maniacs after 12 years as their singer, two years later she released her first solo album ‘Tigerlilly’. Now to celebrate its 20th anniversary Merchant has re-recorded the whole album with new arrangements. At first glance you might wonder if such a project is worthwhile – bit one listen to the new record shows it is a very different beast. Two decades on Merchant’s voice has matured, and the new arrangements, while not startlingly different, give a new feel to each tune. It’s lovely to revisit songs like ‘Carnival’, ‘Wonder’ and the beautiful ode to River Phoenix - ‘River’. GW

This is the first solo record from Charlie Hilton who is a member of the indie dream pop trio Blouse. This record is a great collection of shimmering folky tunes. The first single ‘Pony’ is a catchy as hell tune with reverbed guitars and hazy vocals. Hilton teams up with Mac DeMarco for the country tinged ‘100 million’ and ‘Lets go to a Party’ has an element of dark kraut-rock as Hilton repetitively sings “I’m only happy when I’m dancing for you”. ‘Long Goodbye’ is another indie pop gem to be found on this record. GW

Låpsley Long Way Home British singer Låpsley’s debut album is a mix of smooth electronica that showcases the singer’s distinctive voice. While many of the tracks fall into a familiar soft electronica vibe there are a few tracks that break out of the mold, “Operator (He doesn’t call me) is soulful disco, Leap’ is super chilled and then closing track ‘Seven Months’ is a killer ballad. A solid album that you can play all the way through. If you’ve tired of spinning Adele’s latest record this would be a worthy replacement. GW

We’re loving the new track from Mashd N Kutcher, it takes us back to the ‘90s with its heavy sampling of Len’s ‘Steal My Sunshine’ but that riff is way older.

JOEL CREASEY IS BACK IN AFRICA

WELCOME BACK TO TOORAK The luxurious ladies of Toorak are preparing to return to Australian screens this February on Arena.

The new season will feature returning housewives Janet, Chyka, Jackie, Lydia, Pettifleur, Gamble, Gina and newcomer Susie McLean – who, judging by the trailer, may have some history with Miss Lydia.

The trailer alludes to an explosive argument between ‘Switch The Bitch’ author Pettifleur Berenger and glam-queen Gina Liano, a tumultuous wedding for Gamble Breaux to her betrothed Wolfie, possibly-but-maybe-not a baby on the way, and you better believe there’ll be more catchphrases than you can poke a skeletal, wellmanicured finger at. Real Housewives of Melbourne Season 3 begins February 21 on Arena.

The Seven Network is preparing to air a two-part miniseries about the life of Australia’s favourite music journalist, Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum. Based on his autobiography, ‘The Never, Um… Ever Ending Story, the series follows Meldrum’s influence on Australian music culture over his celebrated career and time on ‘Countdown’ and ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’. The telemovie will feature ‘The Secret Life Of Us’ star Samuel Johnson as Molly and Aaron Glenane as music industry mogul Michael Gudinski Catch ‘Molly’ at 8:30pm, Sunday 7th February on the Seven Network

We’ll have a look at the camp and show you what happens throughout the night that Julia and Chris don’t get a chance to show on their show. We’ll show you how real and how deep in the African jungle it actually is.” This season of ‘Celebrity’ includes cricketer Shane Warne, Anthony Callea and actor Val Lehman. Spanish-Australian artist Dani Marti is preparing to exhibit for the first time in Western Australia. Marti has been working for years, experimenting with and honing his craft through mixed media, such as hand-woven canvases and audio visual works. Marti creates stunning, intense, avant-garde portraiture that challenges aspects of reality to learn more about a subject, in unique and unconventional ways. Leigh Hill spoke to the artist about his upcoming exhibition for the Perth International Arts Festival. What draws you to your chosen mediums for making art? “I work with two mediums mainly, one is between painting and sculpture – using weaving to create materials and surfaces and I also work with video. Everything started for me a long time ago, from the ‘70s when I used to do macramé and weaving, tapestries. I love creating those surfaces. When I decided to become an artist I tried painting and I felt very frustrated with the surface, so I went back to the medium I was using when I was 8/9 years old. I started weaving ropes and treating those as a painting medium. Instead of painting on a canvas, I was weaving the canvas. From there the materials expanded to things like scourers (for washing dishes) or necklaces or road reflectors and manipulating them to create another surface. I was always

drawn to very minimal, monochromatic surfaces and I wanted to give some narrative to those obstructions.” It seems much of your work deals with sexuality and intimacy as well? “I think more than exploring sexuality and intimacy, this is an obsession. This is an obsession with video work and woven work. It’s an obsession with bondage, or taping. Trying to get close and tie something to some reality. I use intimacy or sexuality as a vehicle to get close to a subject or a sense of reality. Sometimes in my video works you see there’s very little space between the lens and the subject, they’re very claustrophobic works. For me video is like taping, like bondage. Taping an emotion, taping a reality. It may be a thrill, it may not, I don’t care - there’s something there.” What kind of works can we expect to see in your exhibition ‘Black Sun’?

with second-hand necklaces about 15 years ago – the whole notion of the necklace is; the necklace is next to the neck, woman, behind the neck is the story, the rosary, a sense of time. Sometimes when you collect the necklaces you can still smell the wearer, so these collections of work are about senses, about women and the emotions conveyed being a woman. When you look at the work, it felt right. Even the colour, the different canvases, black, white, you get different feelings from the necklaces. It may feel light, sometimes it feels creepy, like a mortuary.” Leigh Hill Dani Marti’s ‘Black Sun’ exhibition will be held at the Fremantle Arts Centre as part of the Perth International Arts Festival from Sunday 7th February – Monday 28th March. This is a FREE event. Image:- Dani Marti, Golden Years video still (2014)

THE DANISH GIRL (M)

ROOM (M)

STEVE JOBS (M)

A year after winning awards for transforming into Stephen Hawking, Eddie Redmayne is captivating as Lili Elbe who was the first known person to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Einer Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) is a successful artist when his artist wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) asks him to pose in stockings and silk slippers ... and Lili emerges. Set in Copenhagen and Paris between 1926 and 1931, this is beautifully filmed movie takes full advantage of the fashion of the time and only briefly engages with the negatives. Based on David Ebershoff’s novel of Elbe’s life, the film has taken 15 years to get to the screen. Redmayne is alluring as the coyly seductive Lili who becomes more certain of herself and decides to go to Dresden for the risky pioneering surgery. Gerda has found her muse and supports her husband’s transformation but life becomes turbulent as their marriage disintegrates.

In this disturbing drama, Jack (Jacob Tremblay) has just turned 5. The wretchedly cramped space of the room is the only world Jack has ever known but he seems to be thriving. His mother (Brie Larson) has been imprisoned in the locked room for seven years after being kidnapped at the age of 17. We see the world from Jack’s point of view and, like Jack who is kept safe in the wardrobe when the man visits at night, we are protected from much of the violence. Jack’s mother is not in a good way and realises that her son is the only chance they have of getting back to the world beyond the skylight. A desperate plan is hatched but Jack is reluctant to leave his world. Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay from her marvellous 2010 novel inspired by women who have been abducted. Brie Larson brilliantly brings the desperation to life and Jacob Tremblay adds delightful innocence to the drama.

This is not a biopic, but an interesting three act drama with each 40 minute act taking place at the launch of a new product. As the clock ticks down to Steve Jobs’ presentation, he is confronted by people from his past with whom he has unresolved issues. Through these backstage interactions, Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender) reveals his obsessions, his contradictions and his demons. There’s his ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan (Katherine Waterson) who begs him to acknowledge their daughter Lisa and ask for money. There’s the Apple co-founder Steve ‘Woz’ Wozniak (Seth Rogen) who seeks acknowledgement for the Apple II engineers and disagrees with the Mac’s lack of compatibility with other computers. Then there’s the Apple CEO John Sculley (Jeff Daniels) who returns each time to probe Job about his insecurities on being adopted. We see a fascinatingly different side to the computer guru.

SHERPA: TROUBLE ON EVEREST (M) Directed by Jennifer Peedom

In 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first people known to reach the top of Mount Everest. Since then, smiling Sherpa people have escorted foreigners up the world’s highest mountain and carried most of their equipment. Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom noted that the Sherpas were rarely acknowledged for the major role they play in helping foreigners climb their sacred mountain and set out to make a documentary of the 2014 climbing season from the Sherpas’ points of view. While she is capturing the spirituality of the magnificent icy world, 16 Sherpas are killed by an avalanche. When the families can’t cover funeral costs, the Sherpas question the disproportionate risks they take for disproportionate rewards. This is a breathtakingly important documentary.

Cougar Morrison was one artist people raved about at Fringe World in 2015, the show was the performance debut for the cabaret singer – and he earned rave reviews. For Clint Strindberg, the man behind the exotic persona the creation of the character gave him his own space to perform in. “Things began because poor little Clint did not fit at all into the world of opera, which I’d studied for about six years. After moving to New York, and getting that steel-coated-titanium-coatedAdam-Anting spine that you get from New York, I returned to Australia and found I was not happy just performing in camp Clint style.” “I’d had this idea floating around in my head for about 10 years of a very glamourous, androgynous character – and always knew his name was going to be Cougar Morrison.” The androgynous nature of the character is something that tapped into Strindberg’s own personality.

Will Robots take over the world? Maybe, and what will life be like under our new overlords, is the premise for a new sketch comedy show opening at Fringe World this month. We traded messages with cast member Matt Saraceni and asked him random questions about robots. Who is the best looking robot in popular culture ever, and why? Number 5 from Short Circuit. That is a hunky metallic hunk. What task in life should be taken over by robots? Chopping onions. We don’t need that pain in our lives anymore. Do androids dream of electric sheep? Surprisingly, Androids actually dream of that processing task that they know is due next week, but they haven’t started. Which human might actually be a robot? President Robobama. Praise be Robobama!

What do you think music created by robots would sound like? It depends on the robots motive! If it’s trying to get us to trust it - I reckon it would bust out a concerto so we all go “see, look how civilised they are!”. If it’s trying to control us, it probably sounds like Katy Perry. If it’s just relaxing at home - Tom Jones. There’s a picture of a Robot in the OUTinPerth office, who do you think it is a) Metal Mickey b) Marvin the Paranoid Android or c) Twiki? (Google use is allowed) I hope it’s Metal Mickey! It is Metal Mickey, we love him so. Did you know who any of those robots were prior to googling them?

“Directors were always saying to me ‘You’re very graceful’, and I’d wonder if it was a compliment, it’s not fitting in one or the either, I’m not uber-masculine by any means but neither am I completely feminine. I have cheek bones for days, eyelashes for days, but I’m a boy… I have child birthing hips, why! “Out of my frustration of not fitting in, and not wanting to perform in a camp style, I created a character that is made out of what made me, Clint, a little bit different. So I put on a corset and showed off my hips, I am graceful, so I’m showing everyone just how graceful I can be.” In his new show ‘Rawwr’ Cougar Morrison will be mixing up elements of the old and the new. “This year’s show has lots of fun stuff, lots of dance stuff, it’s very cheeky and very sexy.” The singer said, “They’ll be David Guetta meets Peggy Lee, mash-ups of Judy Garland and Christina Aguilera, it’s incredible fun glamdrogony – old school meets new!” Cougar Morrison’s ‘Rawwr’ is at The Pleasure Garden at Fringe World from February 15-21, Tickets available at www.fringeworld.com.au

Great question! As far as I know, this is the only sketch comedy show set in the year 2027. There’s robots, there’s live video games and there’s a giant screen that tests our ability to improvise every night. If you love Black Mirror, Sci-Fi or just think everybody forgetting how to be human in the most connected age human society has ever seen is kinda funny, you’ll love hanging out with us for a night. We’ll make you laugh. Promise. ‘Good Show: Robots, Robots, Robots’ is at Fringe World from February 15- 21, get tickets at www.fringeworld.com.au Image: Mark Gambino

2/3. I’ll let you guess which one I didn’t know. We’re betting you’d never heard of 80’s kids TV star Metal Mickey. Why should people come see your show instead of the other 699 shows at Fringe World?
