CELEBRATE FREEDOM The murder of Mayang Prasetyo was a horrific crime. The Indonesian woman is believed to have been killed by her partner, who then dismembered her body and attempted to destroy her remains in the kitchen of the couple’s Brisbane apartment. Some of the media reporting that followed was simply atrocious. Reports focused on Ms Prasetyo’s gender history and her employment as a sex worker. News sites searched the dead woman’s social media profiles and lifted the most provocative images they could find. The most sensationalist reporting came from Queensland’s Courier Mail and the majority of public criticism was directed at the News Corp publication. This newspaper was not alone though, many publications around the world chose to sensationalise the story with phrases like ‘She Male’ and ‘Ladyboy’. The trans community was justifiably outraged. Given the easily accessible guidelines that journalists have for reporting on people who are transgender, there is no excuse for any publication to utilise such offensive terms. Those editors and journalists who proclaim that they didn’t mean to cause offense are simply not doing their job if they didn’t consult the reporting guidelines. Those who proclaim they are unaware of such sensitivities in 2014 are seriously out of touch with society.

Sadly Mayang Prasetyo’s experience is not a rare occurrence. People who are transgender are significantly more likely to experience physical violence and death. On Thursday November 20th at 6pm our own communities will gather at the Urban Orchard in the Cultural Centre to acknowledge Trans Day of Remembrance. The many transgender people who have been killed around the world will be remembered.

It’s injustices like these that remind us that the call of Pride is still needed, perhaps more than ever. While many of us now enjoy a life with a great deal of equality, there are still large sections of our own communities that are yet to experience that reality. Equally many countries would look to Australia and wonder if the freedoms we enjoy will ever be obtained in their own nations. Last month Belgrade in Serbia had its first Pride parade in four years. The night before the parade thousands of people protested, calling for “death to faggots’. When the parade went ahead, the city streets were empty, there were more police present than marchers. After the parade religious groups help ceremonies to ‘cleanse the city’.

ANASTACIA 30

When we get our chance to march for Pride on Saturday November 22nd it’s not just a celebration of the freedoms we have, but a chance to show the whole world of our success and progress, to inspire others to continue the battle. It’s also essential that we look at our own society and clearly define the injustices that have not yet been eradicated. Happy Pride

Ten years after her last Australian tour, Sarah McLachlan is coming back for more. The three time Grammy winner has just released her 8th studio album, ‘Shine on’. McLachlan caught up with OUTinPerth to talk about the new album, some of her musical inspirations and making change in the music industry. McLachlan said that ‘Shine On’ is a very personal album, citing some big life changes as writing inspiration. “I went through a lot of big changes in my life, I’m 46 now and lost my dad a couple of years ago, got divorced, changed my management label of 24 years so you know, just a lot of things shifted around in my life. “I had to figure out who I was and how I wanted the rest of my life to look and I guess a lot of that went into the writing of this record because for me it’s very cathartic and an opportunity to sort through some of the noise in my head and get it out.” McLachlan said she allowed herself more creative freedom with ‘Shine On’ than in her previous albums. “It’s very freeing to be able to not edit myself and just let the songs go in the direction they wanted to and lyrically in particular I didn’t feel like I had to edit myself, I just had what I thought was a strong story to tell and though it wasn’t easy to write, it was easy to be very honest about everything.” The singer has also been taking a fresh direction creatively by involving some new producers with the album. “There were some songs that I felt had more of a raw energy and I felt I wanted to have someone produce those songs that I knew could bring that energy to it. I worked with Bob Rock for a couple of songs and that was great. But I also knew that Pierre [Marchand], who I’ve worked with for years, some of the songs, he was the only guy for them so we ended up having a sort of mix of different people.” Although ‘Shine On’ is a personal album, it’s by no means an entirely autobiographical work. McLachlan said she found inspiration for the song ‘In Your Shoes’ on the news. “It actually started off being about bullying and I was having a hard time finishing it because I was trying to tell my own story and it didn’t seem strong enough and then the story of Malala Yousafi, who was shot in the head for speaking out against the Taliban about girls being educated came on the news and I just thought she was a really amazing role model and that someone so inspiring to stand up against these people despite all the danger and just to be so strong in one’s values at 15 years old,

because that’s how old she was at the time. I just thought she was an amazing, amazing human being and her story sort of inspired us being able to finish the song.” McLachlan has long been an advocate for women speaking out for equality. In 1997 she founded the ‘Lillith Fair’, a travelling music festival devoted to female musicians. McLachlan was inspired to create the festival after she wanted to have musician Paula Cole open for her on tour, only to be told that audiences didn’t want to see two female musicians back to back. “I just thought, let’s just get a bunch of these great women, all of whom I’ve worked with or wanted to work with and enjoy their music together and let’s do a couple of shows in a row. I guess what happened is a bunch of promoters, when we told them they said ‘You can’t do that. You can’t have women open up for you, you can’t put two women back to back on the radio. People don’t want that. It’s too much.’ So of course, I listened to that and thought ‘These people are idiots. They don’t know what they’re talking about. What’s that got to do with anything but good music?’ So off we went and we worked with some promoters who were willing to take that risk and it was one of the biggest touring festivals of the 90s.” It’s been 17 years since the first touring Lillith Fair. Does McLachlan believe the music industry has changed? “As far as equality? No. No I don’t.” she said.

“Do I think the world is changing? I think it’s happening very slowly but it is changing and there are moves in the right direction for sure. I think there’s still great inequality between the sexes in most jobs but we are now starting to see more CEOs, CFOs, women, in those positions, in big companies, which is great. So it’s slowly shifting but the music industry is still an old boys’ club for sure. Oh yeah. But if you have enough power you can push your ideas through. I think that’s certainly what I’ve always done. “Luckily, within the music industry there’s lots of different avenues to pursue different kinds of successes. I’ve been extremely lucky that I’ve had the successes that I’ve had and I’ve worked with a lot of really great people, men and women, and so I haven’t had that much bad experience. I’ve had some bad experiences in that regard but not continuous, you know? I’ve been able to work around them and push through.” Sarah McLachlan plays the Astor Theatre on February 11th 2015. Tickets are available from Live Nation.

Since Paulini appeared in Perth during last year’s Pride season she’s been hard at work creating her third album. Lead single ‘Air It All Out’ has just been released and the singer’s eager to share her new songs “The last twelve months has been about putting all the songs together and trying to work out which ones I wanted to put on the album,” Paulini said. The singer, who got her break on Australian Idol, said she’d written a lot over the last five years, so much that she had more songs than she could use. “One of my songs has been recorded by the winner of ‘The Voice’ in The Philippines, while the other has been recorded by the winner of ‘The Voice’ in France.” The time off since her last record has allowed Paulini to focus on her skills as a song writer and she said she loves hearing other artists singing her songs. “Everyone interprets a song differently. I love seeing that because it’s almost like the song is taking its own identity. I love hearing other artists make them come alive.” Paulini wrote all but two tracks on her new album. “There’s one written by an amazing song writer named Eric Riggs who has worked of some of Jordan Sparks’ stuff.

The other one is a really old cover that I love and have always wanted to remake.” The huge 80’s power ballad ‘Every Time I See Your Picture’ by Canadian artist Luba won’t be familiar to most people but it may just deliver Paulini a hit that radio will seize upon. “It’s a pop album, but it’s more adult contemporary adult pop.” Paulini said, describing the sound of her new record. Backed by the Ambition Music Group, the company that has brought Russell Morris and Wendy Mathews back to the top of the charts, Paulini said she was excited to be working with a company that was ‘all about the music’. With her new album set for release in February Paulini is looking forward to releasing a few singles over the next few months, “Then get ready for the big bomb blast of my album!” she squealed, “It’s going to explode!” ‘Air It All Out’ is available to download from iTunes. When scientists in Taiwan recently discovered a new species of snail they decided to name it after marriage equality. Dr. Yen-Chang Lee, a professor at Academia Sinica in Taipei and one of the authors of the report that announced the discovery of the Aegista diversifamilia explained the significance of the name. “When we were preparing the manuscript, it was a period when Taiwan and many other countries and states were struggling for the recognition of same-sex marriage rights. “It reminded us that Pulmonata land snails are hermaphrodite animals, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs in single individuals. They represent the diversity of sex orientation in the animal kingdom.

November 2014

“We decided that maybe this is a good occasion to name the snail to remember the struggle for the recognition of same-sex marriage rights.”

Undeterred by the case in the ACT, Lynn MacLaren MLC for The Greens has put forward a bill that would allow for same sex marriage in Western Australia.

The Taiwanese scientist’s decision seems an apt choice, a snail is a fair totem for a political movement that many people feel is taking far too long to achieve success in Australia and many other places around the world.

Last month MacLaren and Constitutional Law expert Professor George Williams delivered a presentation arguing why they believe the legislation before the WA parliament will have a better chance at succeeding.

Recent polls have shown acceptance of same sex marriage in Australia as being as high as 70%. Yet ten years after the Howard government defined the marriage act as being “between a man and woman” there seems to be little chance of the law being changed in the near future. Meanwhile seventeen nations have now approved marriage between same sex couples leading many Australians to question why we’re lagging behind. On the federal level there are currently two bills sitting in the wings. One from Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm and another in the hands of Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek. Both are waiting for the Liberal Party to declare whether its members will be allowed a conscience vote on the issue. Without a change in stance by the Liberals any bill is set to fail. Last year the battle moved to the state and territory level when the ACT passed marriage equality laws. The High Court quickly proclaimed the laws were inconsistent with federal legislation and the laws were deemed unconstitutional, leaving 31 couples who were briefly married – again unwed.

MacLaren outlined her motivation behind the bill outlining that it was one of the last steps in a long road for equality and LGBTI rights. “People in the LGBTI community, their friends and their families do not deserve to live in a world where they are discriminated against,” MacLaren said. The Greens member for the Southern Metro region shared that we had noticed that many friends were heading overseas to be married and then returning to Australia and being treated as second class citizens. “It was by that differentiation that I saw that we were stopping, especially young people who are growing up and discovering their identities from actually exploring and feeling really good about who they are, because there is this discrimination that says ‘You’re not entitled to be married, you’re not entitled to a life-long partnership and to make that bound in-front of all the people that matter in your life because of your sexuality.”

feature MacLaren said bringing the legislation into the upper house had faced many challenges. When the legislation was first introduced Liberal member Nick Goiran appealed to the President of the House to consider throwing out the proposal on the grounds it was unconstitutional. Barry House, the President of the state’s Legislative Council considered the matter over the parliament’s summer break and ruled that the debate could move forward when parliament reconvened.

was no longer the option but constitutional law expert Professor George Williams shared how the proposed WA law was different. “The question is whether the Western Australian parliament can take leadership in this area and recognise same sex marriage.” Professor Williams said. The academic said that the debate about same sex marriage had become entwined with questions of constitutional law more so than any other recent debate about social policy.

“People will use the law as an excuse not to deal with a value, and they’ll use it was a weapon or a tool to try to shut you up or make you go away, or turn away from the change that’s needing.” MacLaren said.

The Cost of the High Court Challenge

MacLaren said the next stage of the process is getting politicians to get behind the issue; “Those members need to step up to their responsibilities as representatives of the people and actually support it because it’s a good and progressive change.”

The federal government’s High Court challenge of the ACT’s same sex marriage laws last year cost tax payers more than $800,000.

The politician called on members of the LGBTI community to contact their local member and let them know if the issue was important to them and their families and urged people to let their local members know that they would support them if they got behind the bill. With the bill introduced in the Australian Capital Territory last year being thrown out after the federal government appealed to the High Court, many thought that the pathway of state based bills

The ACT’s Solicitor-General Simon Garrison revealed the cost at a Legislative Assembly hearing in early November. The Australian Capital Territory has paid $500,000 to the Commonwealth after it lost the case and was ordered to pay costs. Mr Garrison stated that he stood by the advice given in the case and that the process had allowed for a greater understanding of the federal marriage act. “My own view is I don’t think I would have changed any of the advice we gave. No matter is entirely risk free and we now have a greater body of knowledge about the operation of the Commonwealth Marriage Act,” Garrison said. In some countries proponents of same sex marriage have appealed to their nation’s highest courts and argued that denying marriage to all people was discriminatory. The Professor said the legal reasoning along these lines was becoming common

throughout the world, but would not be found in Australia. “Australia is the only democratic country in the world that does not have a bill of rights, we have no entrenched protections in the constitution about discrimination or guarantees of equality.” Professor Williams argued that unlike foreign countries that have achieved marriage equality by highlighting discrimination, the legal argument in Australia was based around questions of federalism, and it’s more about who can recognise same sex marriage and whether a federal law trumps a state law. So the question of whether a state could bring in a same sex marriage law is now a very murky and difficult constitutional question, and the area is filled with myths, misconceptions and furphies. Professor Williams challenged the notion that only the federal parliament can make laws about marriage. Highlighting that marriage was listed in section 51 of the constitution, he noted that this section gave concurrent powers to both the state and federal governments. The professor also argued that the Western Australian constitution allowed the state’s parliament to create laws in any area. While a national law is easier to manage and more desirable, it does not restrict the state from making its own laws. The greater challenge in the professor’s view was about whether a state law would be deemed inconsistent with federal laws. “A state law has a real chance of surviving, but only if it is drafted in a way that it has no possible overlap with the federal marriage act. In particular it needs to set up a separate species of ‘same sex marriage’ which is distinct in its operation from marriage regulated under federal law.” Professor Williams said a law drafted in this way had the best chance of surviving a challenge in the High Court.

Where Do Other Politicians Stand? OUTinPerth asked all members of the state’s Legislative Council where they stood on the issue of marriage equality and whether they would support Lynn MacLaren’s bill. While many of the members were out of the state on parliamentary business, we received a range of responses. Sally Talbott, MLC, ALP Dr Talbott voiced her support for marriage equality in the parliament last year, she told OUTinPerth that she believes a focus on changing the commonwealth legislation would be the most effective way forward. “As far as the Greens’ bill goes, I think the 2013 ACT experience suggests that all our political energies need to be focused on changing the Commonwealth legislation. “I am working with my Federal and State colleagues to ensure that this happens as soon as possible. The task is to change the hearts and minds of those across the political spectrum who are still resisting, for reasons that can almost exclusively be categorised as homophobic, the move required to change the current law. “The LGBTI community is, I believe, entitled to require its political activists to bring about this change in a way that ensures certainty and security to everyone who chooses to marry the person they wish to make their life partner. Alanna Clohesy, MLC, ALP The member for the East Metropolitan region confirmed that she is a big supporter of marriage equality and would be a supporter of The Greens’ bill. Ms Clohesy said although she would be supportive she didn’t want to give people false hope. “Without the State Government’s support it’s unlikely to get through the State Parliament and may not withstand a High Court challenge. Best option is to keep fighting to make sure the federal parliament listens.”

Alongside his partner Dennis, the Labor member for the Mining and Pastoral region was one of the 31 couples who wed in the ACT last year.

Paul Brown, the Nationals’ representative for the Agricultural region voiced his support for the bill.

“I’m a very big supporter of marriage equality having already been married twice, once in Ireland that isn’t recognised in Australia and a second time in the ACT only to have the High Court overturn it.” “If Lynn brings her bill forward it’s something to consider but at the end of the day I think the High Court’s ruling points to the federal parliament being the only Australian Parliament having the power to legalise same sex marriage.” “It’s time the federal government listened to the will of the community and moved on this issue.” Sue Ellery, MLC, ALP “Yes I support marriage equality, and yes I will support the Greens’ bill unless some miracle happens in the Federal parliament which is really where the law needs to change. If the issue is resolved in the Federal parliament a local WA bill won’t be necessary.

www.peelmanorhouse.com.au

“I do support marriage equality and I will be supporting Lynn’s bill. I don’t consider this a Greens’ bill as I believe it should be a conscience vote, not one that is dictated by party lines. I imagine that there will be a variety of opinions regarding this, and I am sure that that will be the case, even within my own party, The Nationals.” Nick Goiran, MLC, LIB Mr Goiran was away overseas on parliamentary business but confirmed that his previous opposition to same sex marriage remained unchanged. Simon O’Brien MLC, LIB The member for the South Metropolitan region described the bill as a stunt and said he wouldn’t be supporting it. “The fact of the matter is it’s not going to get up. It’s been tried by The Greens in the state parliament before, time and time again, and this time’s not going to be an exception.”

Shorten Confronts the ACL on

Marriage Equality

Where are the LGBT Leaders?

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has told the Australian Christian Lobby that he strongly disagrees with their views on marriage.

Everyone can agree that progress for LGBT people has been heading in the right direction. Gaps definitely remain, but it was only 120 years ago that Oscar Wilde was tried for the most salacious of acts... Having sex with a man. Socially, we have come very far. It’s time our efforts are focused economically and politically.

Mr Shorten was the key note speaker at the conservative lobby group’s annual conference in Canberra. Despite many people criticising the Labor Leader’s decision to attend the meeting Mr Shorten kept the engagement but didn’t back down on his support for marriage equality.

with those that argue that marriage equality is the first step to polygamy and bestiality. Lyle Shelton, Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby said the group were grateful for Mr Shorten’s engagement with the Christian constituency. Today’s national conference is focusing on the issues of religious freedom, indigenous recognition in the Constitution and the plight of refugees fleeing persecution.” Mr Shelton said. “We are grateful for Mr Shorten’s participation while understanding his position on redefining marriage. Mr Shorten’s speech has been welcomed by Australian Marriage Equality who described the speech as powerful. Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi who famously declared in parliament that marriage equality would lead to bestiality responded to Mr Shorten’s speech via social media.

“I believe in God and I believe in marriage equality,” Mr Shorten told the conference audience, “I’m a Christian and a supporter of marriage equality under the law.”

Senator Bernardi posted “Pretty sure no-one takes lectures on morality and marriage by Bill Shorten seriously” to his Twitter account.

Human Rights Commissioner Discusses LGBTIQ Rights

It should be concerning for everyone that there are few LGBT people in public life. While names like Michael Kirby and Louise Pratt spring to mind, it is sobering to remember that only 1% of ASX200 CEOs are openly gay. It’d be folly to presume there was not systemic discrimination holding us back. I am a firm believer that leadership qualities do not discriminate on one’s gender, capacity, ethnicity, age. Most public roles have never had an LGBT person possess them. No longer is there an old boys club, it’s the straight old boys club. A recent study from CareerBuilder in the US found that LGBT people aspire to leadership more than any other demographic. We need to get out of the rainbow ghetto – the stereotypes that LGBT people can only do certain roles is outdated. There are a bevy of LGBT people who are gaining prominence across commercial, community and political roles. Every year there are more LGBT people coming to public prominence, edging closer toward inclusion. Not everyone harbours ambitions to lead, and we shouldn’t be backing someone just because they’re LGBT. They should be put to the test in their field. Should I have children, I want them to see a breadth of people in public life. Not just a straight, pale, stale, male. I can say this confidently: let’s not give up hope. Conrad Liveris will be one of the speakers at ‘Take Me To Your Leader’, a community discussion about leadership at the Hotel Northbridge on Wednesday November 19 at 6pm.

As the formal Commission spokesperson for sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex (SOGII) human rights, Commissioner Wilson sought consultation around what is being done, and what more should be done, to promote a culture of respect for SOGII rights, at both a West Australian and National level.

Discussions topics included were, religious freedoms and human rights, discrimination, the deficit in skilled surgeons in Australia, surrogacy and parenting Laws, lack of services in rural areas, and translating policy into inclusion. Living Proud said they were pleased to have such meaningful contributions from GRAI , Playgroups with Pride, True Colours, WA AIDS Council and the Chameleon Society of WA, describing the level and diversity of the content of the discussion as ‘inspiring’. Facebook for Freedom Local LGBTIQ advocate Kenny McKenzie is hoping to unite Perth’s queer community with the power of social media. McKenzie’s Facebook group, the ‘Perth Queer Community’ aims to be an inclusive online space for anyone who comes under the umbrella of ‘gender and sexuality diverse’. “My goals are too expand the queer network in Perth and I created this page so that all queer people in Perth can have a place to belong to and also can meet and greet other people.” McKenzie explained to OUTinPerth. “I do realise that there are a lot of queer pages on Facebook but then they’re only for a specific type.

“This one, what I’m doing is I’m aiming for the general queer community so that’s including transgender, sexuality and gender diverse people and intersex people as well.” McKenzie said the group aims to promote discussions, provide support for younger members of the community and share events. “We try to focus on events that are alcohol free and that are welcome to under 18s as well, just to be inclusive of everyone else…What I’m aiming is to have a lifestyle for everyone, because often queer people are left out because they are different. Society gives us pressure all the time, being not accepted so I want them to have a place to belong to. To have someone to talk to, too.”

RUSSIA Steve Jobs Memorial Torn Down After New Apple CEO Came Out In Saint Petersburg, a memorial for Steve Jobs has been torn down after his successor, current Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly stated he is proud to be gay. In October, Cook wrote a lengthy essay published in Bloomberg Businessweek stating that he thought being gay was “among the greatest gifts God has given [him].” The six foot tall memorial was erected in 2013 by a company called ZEFS. It was a giant interactive iPhone that featured scrolling quotations and images of Jobs’ life. ZEFS chairman Maxim Dolgopov said one of the reasons the memorial was dismantled was as a gesture against “aggressive” NSA spying. After Cook publicly addressed his sexuality, Vitaly Milonov, co-sponsor of St. Petersburg’s legislation outlawing “gay propaganda” said that Cook should not be allowed into Russia because he could bring “the Ebola virus, AIDS [and] gonorrhea“ into the country.

SINGAPORE

Supreme Court Rules Against Gay Rights Singapore’s Supreme Court has ruled that laws that discriminate against same sex couples are not unconstitutional. The move is a major setback for LGBTIQ activist in the island nation.Section 377A of the Singaporean Criminal Code declares that men who engage in ‘gross indecency’ privately or publicly can be jailed for up to two years. In July, Singaporean couple Garry Lim and Kenneth Chee, who have been a couple for 16 years, launched an appeal alongside another Singaporean man Tan Eng Hong. Mr Tan had been arrested in 2010 for allegedly engaging in a sexual act with another man. The trio argued that the law that forbids homosexual activity contravened sections of the nation’s constitution. The stance was that the constitution guaranteed the right to life and personal liberty, and declared that all people are entitled to

equal protection before the law. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal from the group’s lawyers stating that it was up to legislators to determine what the laws would be.

INDIA

Man Arrested for Homosexuality Due to Wife’s Secret Camera In Bangalore, a 32 year old man has been arrested after his wife secretly filmed him having sex with another man. The 31 year old woman told police in a statement obtained by BuzzFeed that there had been “no sexual contact” between the married couple, and that she was “suffering, thinking that [her] life was ruined.” She reportedly wants legal action brought against the man and his parents for allegedly arranging a sham marriage. The arrest occurred less than a year after India’s Supreme Court reinstated section 377 of the country’s penal code, a colonial law that was first abolished in 2009. The law makes punishable “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with man, woman, or animal” making it one of the few anti-homosexuality laws that includes sex between women. Upon the law’s reinstation, judges speculated that the law would not result in arrests because “what happens in private is private.”

IRELAND

“I think the LGBTQ community are a part of that movement and we’re all sort of connected on this particular level and it’s very exciting – watch that space. “I am so happy to see now that transgender women and men are able to come out of the shadows finally and say ‘Look we’re here. Why do we need to pretend we don’t exist?’ Singer Annie Lennox discusses transgender visibility in an interview with the Huffington Post.

“When I see people hiding behind the bible to insult and demonise people based on their sexuality… I cannot stay silent. I do not agree. “When I hear people allege that ‘God tells them’ that marriage equality is the first step on the road to polygamy and bigamy and bestiality… I cannot stay silent. I do not agree. “These prejudices do not reflect the Christian values I believe in.” Labor Leader Bill Shorten discusses same sex marriage in his keynote speech at the Australian Christian Lobby Conference.

Transgender Woman Wins Gender Recognition 67 year old dentist Doctor Lydia Foy has been awarded 50,000 Euros of compensation ($71 915 AUS approx.) after fighting a three-decade battle for legal gender recognition. Dr Foy first launched proceedings in the 1990s, arguing for her right to a female birth certificate and legal recognition of her gender. According to the Irish Times, Dr. Foy was also seeking damages for humiliating and degrading treatment, a breach of her rights, and personal injuries. The High Court is reportedly planning to hold the Irish government to its “firm intention” to enact laws recognizing the identities of transgender citizens, as it stated in 2007.

“I wish I was bisexual. That’s one of the things about me where I’ve got a very traditional moral code. I’m tedious with my heterosexuality.” Comedian Russell Brand tells Absolute Radio how boring he finds his own sexuality

“As a joke at the end of one take, Burt leans over and kisses you square on the mouth...The crew thinks this is very funny, but it makes you uncomfortable. Uncomfortable and, it will ultimately turn out, gay. Burt Reynolds’ kiss makes you gay.” In an excerpt from his memoir ‘Choose Your Own Autobiography’, actor Neil Patrick Harris shares a memory of when he first realised he was gay.

Breakfast. The meal of kings.

Le Papillion 274 Bulwer Street, Perth

There’s something about going out for a midweek breakfast that makes me feel a bit fancy. I know it’s just an everyday meal (well obviously) but it makes me feel good.

Croissants, pastries and coffee.

It’s social, it gives my day a bit of a kick and getting out of bed early enough for me to have breakfast before work gives me, weirdly enough, a more energised day. In Perth we’re pretty spoilt for breakfast options but I have narrowed it down to a couple of perfect spots that I prefer - and that I can walk to (if I’ve walked to breakfast I totally deserve to indulge myself). Sayers Sister 236 Lake Street, Northbridge This is my weekly, family breakfast spot. Every Wednesday my mum, sister and I head down for our 7.15 breakfast (we have a standing booking - which is needed!) and it’s a brilliant mid-week pick me up. The food is awesome; the open omelette (tomatoes, manchego and chorizo), the potato rosti with poached eggs or the croquettes filled with leek and potatoes, surrounded by cheese sauce with a side of eggs. They’ve got coffee, juices and everything else that you could want down pat and at 7.30am every day of the week the place is buzzing with groups of people, business meetings and friends catching up.

A couple of weeks ago my sister and I walked the dogs through Hyde Park and then settled there, sheltered from the rain and feasted on delicate, warm croissants. Everything about Le Papillion is cute. The tables, the quiches and sweets that they’ve made, the design of the whole place makes me feel comfortable and warm and safe. We ordered a croissant each and a sausage roll for the dogs (which was accompanied by a bowl of water for them) and I was blown away with how cheap it was. The food was lovely, the croissants were buttery and flaky and gorgeous (the use of Swiss cheese was a nice change from cheddar) and ever so light. Foam Coffee Bar 130 Oxford Street, Leederville I love this place; it’s got a really funky feeling. They advertise themselves as a “Swedish-inspired contemporary café experience” and it works for them. For a long time, this was a weekday, pre work/uni breakfast spot for my sister and me. They’ve got a big focus on coffee and sweets and their yummy little sweet nibbles come from a cute, locally owned bakery in North Perth. The food’s good, it’s quick and easy, and the flow of morning traffic seems to often be more coffee drinkers than groups of breakfast-ers so it’s easier to get a table, although this is not the case on the weekends. Their Homemade Baked Beans with Feta is freaking awesome and their Big Brekkie is BIG and totally worth the effort. Oh and kudos for their scrambled eggs. Alice Mod

Things have been busy for Ricki-Lee. She’s just released her fourth studio album and has been kicking up her heels on ‘Dancing with the Stars’. As she chatted to OUTinPerth, she was in the midst of getting ready for yet another event.

“It’s crazy.” Ricki-Lee said breathlessly over the phone. “We woke up this morning and we had a big rehearsal and I just flew into Sydney just then and I’m about mid getting ready to go to something else as well so it’s craziness, but it’s fun. I live for that craziness.” The singer was still recovering from a performance on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ the night before that had her doing the foxtrot in a voluminous blue dress and matching scrunchie. “It was spectacular. That’s probably the word to describe it.” She laughed. “It’s really funny, even when we were doing sittings, the whole time I was like ‘Oh God, this is awful. ‘ and as soon as I put it on and it was like the glasses and the hair and makeup I was like ‘This is fabulous!’ I just thought it was the greatest thing ever. You’ve got to make friends with the costume peeps.” Ricki-Lee said she was a natural ally to the wardrobe department at ‘Dancing with the Stars’ because she adores dress ups. “I love getting into the character of whatever I’m doing and just committing to whatever it is and really going to the extreme. And they really love that, and they have fun with that. They appreciate my willingness to get crazy with costumes.” Ricki-Lee’s new album also fits in with the dancing theme. Not just for its title, ‘Dance in the Rain’, but for its melodic numbers she hopes will get everybody going on the dance floor. The album has been two years in the making, and the singer is both thrilled and tentative to let the public hear what she’s created. “It’s nice to finally release it, you know. Because I’ve wanted to for so long and when you work on something for so long, you live and breathe it and so when you finally release it, it’s a mix of emotions. It’s a little anxious and then you’re nervous and you’re excited and I’m really proud as well. I have been dying to release it and love the songs that I’ve been working on.” According to Ricki-Lee, one of the advantages

of taking two years to develop an album is the space for experimentation. On this album, she’s tried her hand at a number of different genres. “I think the best thing with an album is that people get to pick and choose.” She said. “There’s a lot of the gays that are loving the club songs and people that are picking out a song called ‘Criminal’ that’s got a bit of a reggae vibe to it and they’re loving that because it’s something fresh and new and then there’s the other people who have been dying to hear ballads from me for years and they get quite a few on this album.” The singer said she kept her fan base in mind when creating the album, including a large number of gay fans. “I really do have such a strong gay following and it’s been from the very beginning. I’m never quite sure why, but I’m like a magnet for gays, and I’m ok with that. I love that.” she laughed. Always happy to get the gaybar dance floor going, Ricki-Lee shared a fond nightlife memory. “I remember a couple of years ago when I released ‘Burn it Down’, the night that it was released I went for a walk along Oxford Street. I was at a friend’s house not far from Oxford Street in Sydney and I walked down Oxford Street, we were going to get some dinner and as I walked past there was this fabulous queen onstage, living and giving her all singing ‘Burn It Down’ with a dress that had flames all over it. And I walked in and it was just amazing because I was like ‘Oh my god! I just released this song!’ It was really cool.” Ricki-Lee was inspired by the experience, as evidenced by the song ‘Diva’ from her new album. “I was picturing a performer onstage, whether it’s a stripper, a drag queen, even you’re out with your girls, or your gays or your girrrls, everyone’s getting ready and everyone just is so fierce. “I was imagining guys sitting around at a strip club watching a girl do the most amazing pole dancing along to ‘Diva’. And I was imagining the biggest gay club and the most amazing, fabulous, fierce, big-haired, long eyelashes, legs up to their armpits, drag queens singing along to ‘Diva’. “It’s about letting your ego totally run wild. There’s lines in ‘Diva’ like ‘Tell me what you want and I’ll give it to you. There ain’t nothing that I couldn’t do. All eyes on me, you like what you see, I’ll bring to life all of your fantasies.” It’s sexy and it’s fierce and it’s confident. I love it so much.”

The Kooks Listen The tight 11 tracks arranged seamlessly to create the latest album ‘Listen’ by the Kooks are unsurprisingly superb. Sticking to Brit-Rock genre with a ‘don’t fix what’s not broken’ mentality, the band only break away from the mould for ‘Westside’, where the introduction of electro undertones leaves the band sounding strangely like Empire of the Sun. Back-up vocals throughout compliment Pritchard’s voice rather than just support it. Sporadic tracks using classic piano throughout serve as a pleasant surprise. Hope Wealcan

Madden Brothers Greetings from California

Lanie Lane Night Shade

Originally unsure of the genre shift and name-change from pop-punk band Good Charlotte to crooning-pop duo The Madden Brothers, the album started off uninspiring but eventually turned out to be a ‘grower’. After a few plays the album developed into a foot-tapping, catchy collection of (pretty cheesy) love songs and the undeniably good hit ‘We Are Done’. Keep your ear out for ‘Brixton’, it kind of sounds like a Christmas song but without the Christmas references. Hope Wealcan

The first five tracks off the much anticipated new album cannot be listed to individually. The five songs package together to make one endless experience brimming with multi-layered melodies held up by tambourine and Lane’s signature soothing vocals. ‘La Loba’ could easily be mistaken for two songs and segues to the second half of the album that offers easy-listening that’s a touch more upbeat. The final 10.5 minute track ‘Mother’ is worth the wait.

Vance Joy Dream Your Life Away Despite the crippling pressure of delivering an album after achieving #1 on Triple J’s Hottest 100, Vance Joy has produced an album full of sweet melodic tunes that don’t leave ‘Riptide’ standing alone as the only overwhelmingly good track. Escaping the shackles of being a one hit wonder, the album bursts open with ‘Winds of Change’, succinctly followed by ‘Mess is Mine’ (you don’t notice the song change). ‘Riptide’ brings up momentum at track 4. Listen out for ‘Georgia’.

Anastacia is back with a brand new album appropriately titled ‘Resurrection’. As the powerhouse singer headed into the studio to record the album she discovered that her breast cancer had returned. The revelation had a big effect leading the singer to create her most personal work to date, and a collection of songs distinctly different to her previous work.

weird. I was more prepared for it, because I had said to myself, and also investigated with doctors, ‘If it comes back I want a double mastectomy if I can and I want to get rid of it for good. I don’t care, I’m not going to do all the things I tried to do the first time. All the chemo and the radiation.

OUTinPerth spoke to Anastacia from her home in California and noted that her new CD had a distinctively different sound with the singer’s voice very much at the forefront.

“If I have the opportunity to continue saving my life, I can’t be that vain – just take care of it and do what I got to do.”

“I think the interesting part is that throughout my career I always thought that people could hear my voice, but when I sing live people would be like, ‘Oh My God! That’s so much better than the record!’”

Anastacia says her last record, an album of serious rock covers allowed her to rethink the way her voice sounds in recordings. “There was a previous album I did to this, not really to sell it or promote it, but really just for my own artistic desire I did an album of covers, and by doing that it really did excise the ‘real rock’ in rock songs, which is about the voice. “It breaks it down so much more, so when I went to write I ended up writing songs that didn’t have a lot of choruses. They may have strong choruses, but not the ones that need all these background singers. “It was interesting, I didn’t really expect to do that, and I’ve never done it before because it’s always been a producer that has been involved in all those thick backgrounds on most of my hit songs. This was different. “This was being a storyteller, with age and wisdom, all of those things are part and case of growing with your music.” One story that is shared throughout the album is the singer’s experience of tackling breast cancer for the second time. Anastacia discovered that the cancer had returned on her first day in the studio. Rather than stop the recording session the singer kept on working, writing about her experiences. Facing cancer the second time, the singer says she was more prepared than when she was first diagnosed 12 years ago. “Believe it or not, it’s really

On the deluxe version of her new album ‘Resurrection’ Anastacia has included a special treat for fans, a new alternative recording of her hit ‘Left Outside Alone’. “That was a song that I wrote on the first bout of cancer and it

just had such an impact with me the first time round. So when I thought about doing a remake of one of my old songs that was one of the hardest songs for me to sing back in the day. “Back when my radiation was going on, I was really weak. I didn’t have good retention with my memory with all the drugs. It just was a hard song for me to accomplish. “So I wondered if I could reinvent it, and it was so easy. The words sound different, and the vibe was different, because I am different. So I just allowed myself to take it somewhere where I’d never gone and it’s just a beautiful song. It’s really nice and I wanted to make sure it went on the deluxe version of the album so the fans could have it. I knew that they’d like it and enjoy it.” Anastacia has also recently been spending some time with her queer fans having made a big appearance at Manchester’s Pride Festival this year describing it as an awesome experience. The singer gives out a huge squeal when we ask her if she’s ever seen drag performers miming to her song. “I have definitely had drag queens do me, in front of me. I’m a little bitter, they really have much nicer legs which isn’t fair. They have these legs that go on for days and then these shoes!

“They are so much sexier than me. I don’t even ooze that much sex appeal. I wonder how I go on stage later after a sexy diva. I don’t even know how to have that much sex appeal in my thumbnail.” As the singer gets ready to return to touring she shares her hope to bring her live show to Australia in the future. After a prolonged period away from her fans Anastacia said she can’t wait to be standing on stage again. Anastacia’s brand new album ‘Resurrection’ is available now. PRIDE (MA)

Directed by Matthew Warchus When Margaret Thatcher announced plans to close 20 coal mines across Britain in 1984, the mineworkers went on strike. Things were extremely tough for the miners and their families but people rallied behind them. A group of gay men and lesbians in London started to shake buckets to raise money and held ‘Pits and Perverts’ concerts that raised huge amounts of money. They approached a small village in South Wales to offer their support. It was a clash of cultures but both groups were being demonised by the press, the police and the public. Lifetime friendships were made as people discovered their common humanity.

In 1996, a journalist for the San Jose Mercury News uncovered an incredible story that the major papers had missed. Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner) received information that the United States government was involved in the importation and sale of massive amounts of cocaine from South America. Not only that, but it was using the profit to fund the rebel fighters in the Nicaraguan civil war - a battle that the American Congress had refused to fund. Part political thriller, part horror story, the film is based on Gary Webb’s book ‘Dark Alliance: The CIA, The Contras and The Crack Cocaine Explosion’ and Nick Schou’s book about Gary Webb. This dedicated Pulitzer Prize winning reporter follows the story from a Californian prison to Nicaragua … to the corridors of power in Washington DC. Instead of being lauded as a hero for the story of the century Webb is intimidated, his family and his life are threatened and he becomes increasingly isolated. This actually happened and the legacy of harm remains from a criminal enterprise that was acceptable collateral damage because it aided rebels fighting a Cold War battle 2,000 miles from the U.S. border – despite Congress having expressly blocked that approach.

New Yorker and failed writer Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline) is childless and penniless, with three divorces under his belt, when he inherits a grand old apartment in Paris from his estranged father. With hardly any French and no money for a return airfare, he travels to Paris to sell the apartment to pay his debts. Matthias is shocked to find 92 year-old Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith) and her protective daughter Chloé Girard (Kristin Scott Thomas) in residence. Under a French law known as viager, he can only take possession of the property when Mathilde dies and he must also make monthly payments to her – but Mathilde allows Mathias to stay in the apartment while he sorts out what he wants do.

Directed by Michael Cuesta

Directed by Israel Horovitz

Based on his play, Horovitz’s film is a charming and sophisticated drama which starts off with plenty of humour before tapping into much more serious passions as secrets are revealed and lives are examined. Intense conversations in small rooms are given emotional depth by the three magnificent veteran actors. Initial hostilities are dissolved when the characters discover a shared history. Mathias and Chloé find they have much in common and acknowledge how their lives have been propelled by others.

Comedians Joel Creasey and Rhys Nicholson team up to investigate rural homophobia in ‘Gaycrashers’. It’s part of ABC2’s ‘Opening Shot’, a series of half hour documentaries from Australia’s best emerging artists in the form.

expecting what I thought it was going to be. I grew up in Newcastle… I’ve kind of got experience in that situation. I kind of expected it would be a town of bogans. You have to watch it to find out whether it is. Spoiler! “

‘Gaycrashers’ sees the partners in comedy take their frank and fearless comedic stylings to the rural Victorian town of Colac, where Creasey suffered homophobic abuse on two previous occasions. In the most recent incident, which became part of Creasey’s comedic repertoire, he was chased away from a gig by a group of people yelling homophobic insults. The comedian inadvertently brought the town of Colac into the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons when he told the sorry tale on Twitter.

Creasy and Nicholson get to know the locals by working various locations in the town, including a memorable trip to a cattle farm. Oddly enough, Nicholson’s hands-on approach to cow insemination wasn’t the most outrageous thing to happen that day. “That was so weird for me as well because that day I didn’t know that we were doing that until we got there. In your head you go ‘Ok, well, in this day’s filming, that’s gonna be the funniest thing that’s going to happen. I’m going to fist a cow, and it’ll be comedy gold.’” Nicholson said. “Things happen on a shoot where you think ‘Oh, I’m going to be funniest part of this day and then something totally unexpected will happen.’”

Now, he’s back to see if the town of Colac is well represented by the angry mob that chased him out of town three years before. With his contemporary, the hilarious and snappily dressed Rhys Nicholson by his side, he aims to meet the locals and find out what they think of homophobia in the community. Rhys Nicholson chatted to OUTinPerth about his Colac adventure, and what he learned in the process: “If I’m honest I think I went in pretty judgy, I think. Kind of

books The Never, um, Ever ending Story

by Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum with Jeff Jenkins Allen & Unwin

Although Molly Meldrum can’t remember when fell from his roof just before Christmas 2011, he realises he is lucky to be alive. When he recovered he was motivated to finish his life story that he had worked on for the last 35 years. Molly is a great storyteller but he admits he isn’t that good at writing so he has had three ghost writers over that time. He

doesn’t say much about his parents or his childhood because it was music that dominated his life from an early age. This is not a kiss and tell book as Molly doesn’t lay his soul bare, but it is the story of how he became the most influential voice in Australian music and endeared himself to millions as a national institution (or mental institution as one of his friends put it). Crammed with quotes from the people in his life, the misunderstandings and accidents that have paved his way are incredibly entertaining and usually quite outrageous. On Friday 8 November 1974 the first Countdown program brought the world of popular music into living rooms all around Australia, courtesy of the ABC. It coincided with the release of colour television and it made stars for 14 years. The Countdown crew made video clips and Molly became the much-loved guru of the pop music industry. Jimmy Barnes was being conservative when he said, ‘If it wasn’t for that hour on Sunday night half of Australia wouldn’t have known about the music that was happening’.

Part of his preparation was to write fantasy versions of the best and worst rides, and of course the ‘Pope of Trash’ manages to let his filthy mind conjure up some titillating possibilities. He also imagines the horror of being attacked by a rabid raccoon, imprisoned, tortured, being stuck with the dialogue from one of his films and worst of all sharing a car with a smoker.

Cult film director John Waters was between pictures as they say in Hollywood and, having nothing better to do, he decided to hitchhike from

Calling the undertaking his ‘hobo-homo journey’ and being an ultimate control freak, he planned for weeks ahead. This included writing about the best possible scenarios as well as the most horrific rides he could think of. At the age of 70, he was ready for an adventure and wanted to maintain his belief in the basic goodness of people.

Although Molly has many shortcomings, his enthusiasm and his energy seem to know no ends. There’ll only ever be one Molly Meldrum … who admits he has lived the most extraordinary life for ‘an ordinary person, with no discernible talent’. His ‘family’ are all recognisable names – Elton John, Rod Stewart, Madonna, Bob Geldof, Jermaine Jackson … the list goes on. Who else could say that he just happened to be having dinner with John Mellencamp and Sean Penn when he decided to get a tattoo? Or that he was sitting in Warren Beatty’s home cinema watching Bonnie and Clyde with Madonna while Warren made popcorn for them? Or sitting next to Princess Diana while having lunch at The Lodge? Or having Rod Stewart save your life? Or meeting the Sex Pistols, Freddie Mercury and Prince Charles all in the same week! Molly’s life so far has ‘more dramas than Shakespeare and more laughs than ‘Seinfield’. Lezly Herbert

Unfortunately reality is never as exciting as fiction and his record of the actual journey is somewhat stultified as he fails to get rides and gets stuck in some horrifically bland parts of Middle America. Armed with his pencil thin moustache, a collection of hastily made cardboard signs, he did actually meet some interesting people … and he was also being tracked by his two assistants running Hitchhiker Central from his office. His journey reveals good, bad and ugly of Middle America as well as being an extremely entertaining read. Lezly Herbert

DJ Beth Yen has just returned from three months spinning tunes in Europe and Ibiza. Now she’s about to smash the decks and get the street dancing for The Court’s White Party at this year’s Pride. The UKbred Sydney DJ caught up with OUTinPerth to chat about what she’s loving right now and what we can expect from her upcoming EP. You’ve performed all over Australia, the UK and had a residence in Ibiza. Where’s your favourite place to perform? Err…let me have a think about that for a moment… Ibiza  How has your approach to DJing evolved after playing gigs in Ibiza? Have you taken on any new styles? I think it’s important to not be stuck on one genre. Whilst in Ibiza I grew to really like elements of Techno and the fresh House sounds that were being played this season. You’ve performed alongside some huge names: Diplo, Afrojack, Skrillex, who stands out for you? Steve Aoki, Benny Bennassi & Skrillex back 2 back one night at Pacha has to be the stand out for me. The energy between them and the way they interacted with the crowd was just incredible to watch.

step for me to progress organically. I also wanted to contribute to the dance music scene. What can we expect from your upcoming EP? You can expect upfront House music with elements of Tech House & Techno with a dash of Hip Hop attitude. What do you enjoy about performing at LGBT events and clubs? The crowd are generally friendlier and they just want to have a great time so the vibe is awesome. What are you looking forward to about playing at The Court on Pride night? I had a blast last time I performed at The Court the crowd were very receptive. It being Pride night I expect the energy will be electric. Catch Beth Yen DJing in the Winter zone at The Court’s White Party on November 22nd from 7.30pm.

Paul Selwyn Norton joined STRUT Dance in 2013, and since then has beganbegun work on repositioning the organisation as a National Choreographic Development Centre. He has also worked to build STRUT’s artistic program in the lead up to presenting Perth’s first ever dance based ‘MoveMe Improvisation Festival’. The MoveMe dance festival was first staged in 2012 but this year Norton has transformed it into a captivating festival focusing on improvisation in performance. “This is a first,” Norton declared, “There has never been an improvisation festival in WA covering dance, music and performance.” “Almost all choreographers use improvisation in their work.” Norton explained, “Either as a practice itself or as a part of research to come up with material or to stimulate dancers to create new vocabularies. Improvisation is deeply embedded in choreographic research.” Norton brings three decades of experience to share with Australian dancers and choreographers. As a dancer he

worked with the acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company and William Forsythe’s prestigious Frankfurt Ballet. While as a choreographer his works have been performed around the globe.

“There are beautiful pockets of poetry happening all over, and that’s because of people investing in staying here. People like [local choreographers] Jo Polllit and Rachel Ogle and Laura Boynes.

Norton highlighted that improvisation is a practice that is found across almost all art forms and a festival of improvisation creates connections with many other art practices.

“Now there is this shift in interest, STRUT has got a really strong international and well as national focus now, and that’s because of the network that I brought with me. We’ve also got a new contemporary dance company in the offing, so eyes are turning west.” Norton said.

“Stand-up, theatre has a long history in commedia dell’arte all the way back to when theatre was born, it comes out in improvisational variation, it’s been there since theatre began, since dance began and since music began.” “Most of Mozart and most of Henry Purcell, Baroque is improvised music, its jazz. It’s always been around we just happen to now call it improvisation.” Norton said. Since arriving in Perth, Norton said he had been excited by the local dance industry and that it’s beginning to be recognized both on a nationally and internationally.

Norton said he was excited about all of the festival’s program; “It’s all bold, it’s all risky, it’s all provocation and it’s all on different levels!” The Move Me Improvisation Festival presented by STRUT Dance is on from November 22-30. The plays of Noel Coward appear to be experiencing renewed popularity in recent times, with new films and theatrical revivals coming thick and fast. Felicity Kendal is making her Australian stage debut with her starring role in ‘Hay Fever’. “He does seems to be very popular at the moment,” Kendal agrees, “There seems to be a revival of this work going on.” The actress who became a household name with the ‘70s TV series ‘The Good Life’ and returned to our screens with the murder mystery series ‘Rosemary and Thyme’ has also enjoyed a long and successful career on the stage. The theatre veteran notes that we do tend to forget about particular writers and then suddenly get very interested in them again, until we have too much, and they return to being out of fashion. “It’ll go on forever because the writing is so good.” Kendal said. Coward’s daring subject matter is what keeps his plays so relevant today Kendal argued, noting that ‘Hay Fever’ has as much to offer now as when it debuted 89 years ago. “The thing about Coward is that he was just such an extraordinary man. He was so modern in many ways, he was writing at twenty four about things were just not written about for the West End. I think people think he was a comedy writer about manners in a sense, but in fact he was a very political animal who was way ahead of his time.” Kendal said. “He was writing about infidelity, about drugs, about homosexuality, he wrote about the world and things that the society people in England were discussing. Everyone knew what was going on. It was a wild time, the twenties, but people weren’t putting it on the stage, he was way ahead! He’s very modern because he was writing about people.”

Reflecting back on her career, and the longstanding adoration that the public has for her since she first entered the public consciousness as loveable housewife Barbara Good, Kendal said she had been very lucky. “I’ve been lucky to enough to have been reasonably successful from a very early age, and so I’m used to be recognised ‘for being around’, a bit like a part of the furniture. The actress said she doesn’t always notice when people recognise her in the street, but it’s very nice when they do. The evergreen sitcom ‘The Good Life’ made stars out of all four of its main actors with Kendal, Penelope Keith, Richard Briers and Paul Eddington all going on to have long and successful careers. The final episode of the show was even a Royal Command performance with the Queen watching in the audience. “Absolutely, we did indeed,” said Kendal recalling the taping, “She came in an evening dress with a little crown. It was the most surreal situation because instead of benches they put in leather chairs and bunting. Normally we had just any old people from outside who queue up. Normally when you get it wrong you cuss and swear and then do a retake. “It was usually very casual, but suddenly we had to be careful not to say the wrong word. It was surreal experience but rather lovely!” Felicity Kendal is staring in Noel Coward’s ‘Hay Fever’ at The Regal Theatre from 13-22 November. Tickets are available from Ticketek.

culture Over the course of year, Anderson has been performing material from his acclaimed show ‘Wiluminati’ in 16 US cities. But that’s not to say he’s been going through the motions. “I did Wiluminati in Montreal, and I have done it in various different places across the US. Sometimes when I go to a place for the first time, they get ‘Wiluminatish’, they get a bit of Wiluminati and they get a bit of old stuff that they’ve never heard before.” He explained.

Comedian Wil Anderson has become one of Australia’s best exports since the mining boom. After rising to prominence hosting breakfast radio, he’s continued to win over the small screen hosting comedy talk show ‘The Glass House’ and ‘The Gruen Transfer’, a panel discussion series scrutinizing the world of advertising and spin, which enjoyed reincarnations as ‘Gruen Nation’ and ‘Gruen Planet’. Now he’s taken a year to return to what he loves most of all: stand up comedy. He chatted to OUTinPerth from his apartment in Los Angeles ahead of his upcoming Australian tour.

Anderson said he curates his material according to the audience. “There’s a big riff in the show actually about guns in America and an experience that I had in America around guns. There’s a few places in America that I toured to where they just bring their guns to the gig so I probably couldn’t do that material. That is probably not the most receptive audience. You don’t want to piss off an audience of people who have guns.”

Anderson has been in the game for 20 years. He shares some wisdom he’s gained performing nationally and worldwide: “I’ve performed in most of the major comedy scenes in the world and I know lots of people from those scenes, and while there are things that those scenes do better than the Australian scene, I think as a general overall scene, the Australian stand up comedy scene is by far, in a way, the most creative, the most interesting and the most supportive comedy scene in the world. We are smaller, but the high level of creativity and people who are actually making world class fabulous things, and the way that those comics when they go overseas are so readily accepted and fit in, it’s a real credit to our industry. It’s in a very creative place.” He’s also seen firsthand a blossoming diversity in comedy worldwide. “I think it was always there, but I think that sometimes a couple of jobs define a generation. So for example if you look at my generation, you can talk about people like Hillsy and Rove and Hughsy and whatever and you’re like ‘That’s a lot of white men with similar world views or experiences or whatever, right?’…I just think there’s a lot more people of different experiences doing comedy now. People are really a bit more open to the idea of pursuing it because you don’t have to do it in the same way. You don’t have to do live comedy. You could do YouTube videos or you could have a podcast that people love or you could be really really funny on Twitter and build a following out of that and write a book and do a column. There are so many different ways now that you can be funny.” Check out the rest of our interview with Wil Anderson on www.outinperth.com ‘Wiluminati’ is on at the Perth Convention Centre November 21st and 22nd. Face Value Like almost everyone, twenty two year old Andy has looked in the mirror and wished he could change some things about his face.

muscles are different there is an element of ‘best guess’ in what dosage each individual needs. Too much could result in a lack of facial expression, not enough may not achieve the desired results. Dr. Briggs openly explains that it’s not unusual for it to take a few treatments to get everything ‘just right’.

Investigating cosmetic surgery options is something Andy has thought about before, but he thought it was probably too expensive an option to consider.

As Andy discussed his thoughts about his own facial features we turned to the area around his nose. Andy highlighted that he has several broken capillaries around his nose. He revealed that he’s noticed his father has a similar feature and he’s worried that this will become more noticeable as he gets older. Dr. Briggs suggests that IPL laser treatment would be an option to improve this area.

“I have a persistent wrinkle on my forehead,” Andy shared before we head off to meet Dr. Patrick Briggs. The night before Andy was asked to take some selfies of his face and send them through to the clinic with some notes about what worried him. “It’s half way across, I don’t want it to become a full wrinkle.” Andy shared. “I’m also worried about some pitted skin near the side of my nose.” he said. OUTinPerth set up a consultation Consultation between Andy and Dr. Briggs’ to see if muscle relaxant treatment was an option for Andy’s increasingly furrowed brow. At Dr. Briggs clinic in Subiaco his friendly staff take Andy through to a small photographic studio and shoot a number of close ups of his face. Then we went in to meet Dr. Briggs. The doctor carefully outlines the risks associated with Botox treatments. While the procedure is not permanent there are a range of outcomes that may eventuate. As everyone’s

As the doctor closely examined Andy’s face closely he highlighted that Andy’s forehead has some significant sun damage. The doctor highlights that this should be concerning to someone of Andy’s age. Across the top of his forehead there is a slight change in pigmentation, a series of lighter and darker spots. Dr. Briggs’ recommendation is that we should all be wearing sunscreen as part of our daily skin care routine, especially people like Andy who hail from a Northern European background. As Andy and Dr. Briggs chat Andy opened up about his concerns and Dr. Briggs politely asked him a series of challenging and thought provoking questions.

Andy decided that for the moment he’s not ready to try out the botox option, but it’s something he might consider in the future. “I’m a little bewildered, my priorities around my looks have suddenly changed.” Andy said after the consultation. Andy said he appreciated Dr. Briggs’ direct manner. “What I’m going to look like when I’m older is something that crosses my mind more and more.” Andy said. “I’ve started to think more about my skin and I quit smoking. “Meeting Dr. Briggs was such a catalyst to re-evaluate my thinking… I feel a lot less worried about the wrinkle on my forehead, I’m not too worried about the sun damage because there is action I can take, and I’m interested in what I can do about the area around my nose.” Andy said. To find about more about Dr. Patrick Briggs visit www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.com.au Graeme Watson Dr. Briggs is a supporter of OUTinPerth and regularly advertises in our magazine.

It’s Pride season and in our motor-heavy city, cars are not just a means to get from A to B but a vehicle of self-expression. Here are some simple ways you can jazz up your Honda, give your Benz a bit of a bend or turn your Mini into a big deal! 1. Paint your keys rainbow using nail polish. Not only will this keep them Prideready year ‘round, it’ll also help you remember which one’s which. 2. Bedazzle your steering wheel. Bedazzle your car radio. Wear bedazzled driving gloves, roll the window down and let your polka-dot scarf fly in the wind. 3. Swap it in for a Jeep Wrangler. 4. Buy eyelashes for your car headlights! That’s right, we live in a world where you can buy false eyelashes for your car. It’ll be like a drag queen with a motor! 5. Throw some glitter around in there. 6. Bang someone of the same sex in the back seat. 7. Play only George Michael and Tegan and Sara. Always on full volume. Always with the windows down. 8. Purchase a ‘little tree’ air freshener. Cut it into a tulip instead. 9. If you want to show your Pride while also feeling like you’re in the movie ‘Tron’, you can purchase rainbow LED lights for your car’s underbelly. This will glow light onto the ground below and immediately surrounding your car, giving the effect that you’ve just run over a fairy village. 10. Rainbow racing stripes. Sure, everybody’s seen rainbow bumper stickers. Rainbow racing stripes are next level. You’ll go faster and gayer. Sophie Joske

Travel bible ‘Lonely Planet’ has just named Copenhagen as the number one place for LGBTIQ travelers to visit. Highlighting Denmark’s forward thinking approach to LGBTIQ rights, the report also highlighted the city’s fashion industry, great gay bars, excellent accommodation, a plethora of events and very welcoming local community. To show how much Copenhagen values their local queer community they recently renamed one of the city’s many cobblestoned squares. Rainbow Square. Adjacent to the historic Copenhagen City Hall, the square is also home to Oscar’s Bar and Café – a great hangout for the local community. The city has many cozy venues to check out, all within a short walk of each other. The recently opened G-A-Y Copenhagen is a small bar which fits just a handful of people but the dance floor is pumping and there’s a friendly crowd. If you can’t squeeze in here, head around the corner to Cosy Bar or Masken Bar. If you like wearing leather or denim Men’s Bar might be to your liking, and there’s even a women’s venue: Vela. The great thing about Copenhagen is you can easily walk around, or grab a bicycle. The city has more bicycles than people and hardly anyone drives. The city is filled with cobbled streets, quaint coloured buildings, beautiful parks and pathways for relaxing walks along the river. Some of the sights to check out include the statue of The Little Mermaid, the old military fort Kastellet, the world famous Tivoli Gardens and the impressive Church of Our Saviour. The four hundred year old church has an impressive corkscrew spire that can be climbed revealing impressive views over the city’s rooftops. Inside the wooden structure is a maze of well-worn stairs and ladders. Squeeze through the tight doorways to get to the top and climb the final stages on the outside of the spire. Terrifying, but worth it for the scenery.

I have recently met a new guy. We seem to have some common interests and there is a definite physical attraction between us. He is keen to explore the possibility of us ‘cementing’ (his phrase) our friendship into a ‘concrete relationship’ (his terminology again). But I am wary. Twelve months ago, a five year relationship I was in blew up. I felt extremely betrayed. I had given my partner my complete trust and he abused it. He accused me of making promises and not keeping them but this is not the case. It was him who didn’t keep the bloody promises! I don’t want that experience again. I don’t really know if I can trust anyone again – yet also wish I was involved in a good relationship. I feel quite lost – and certainly fearful of any ‘cementing’. Got anything ‘concrete’?

Concrete Critic Trust is critical to healthy, strong relationships. Of its very nature, our humanity is composed of a deep need for us to rely on others. Graeme Green says, “It is impossible to go through life without trust. That is to be imprisoned in the worst cell of all … oneself”. Trust is an amazing gift we both give and receive. The question is, what does trust look like? What are the components of this gift, this trust? Where and how do we find this gift and, perhaps most importantly, keep it, don’t lose it? Vanessa Hall, from Sydney, published a little book in 2007 called ‘The Simple Truth about Trust’. She cites the ingredients of trust as: expectations, needs and promises; what she calls ENPs. “Trust is something that needs to be built”, she says. Let’s build a Trust Bridge – in a similar form to a megalithic portal, seen in places such as Stonehenge. One support of the bridge is expectations. We all bring expectations into our relationships based on past experiences; things we’ve learned, seen, heard, read – our entire basket of happenings. For this support of our Trust Bridge to be sturdy and reliable, we need to take the risk, to be open to vulnerability and communicate our expectations. We also need to listen to the other person’s expectations without judgment or cynicism. The second support of the Trust Bridge is needs. Again, as humans we all have needs – and, importantly, we have the right to express those needs. That does not necessarily mean we will have all those needs met and we must accept that no one person can meet all our needs. Our needs can be basic: shelter, warmth, food, safety. They can rise to a need to belong, for respect, for love and acceptance and culminate in a need for space to grow and develop. Again, for this support to our Trust Bridge, sharing with each other our needs, exploring how we might assist in helping each other meet these needs is what ‘cements’ that vital support to the bridge.

The lintel – that which connects the two supports – is built of promises. For this lintel to do what it is supposed to – connect – we need to be able to differentiate between implicit promises and explicit promises. Implicit promises are things that are suggested or things we think we have heard. Explicit promises are clearly stated and must be honoured. We then know exactly what we are going to give/receive. Sitting on top of the lintel, in the middle, is trust. While the two supports and the lintel, the connection, are constantly nurtured and respected, the portal stands its ground. Trust is solidified. When the foundations are not cherished, are not re-invigorated by open, non-judgemental communication, they become shaky – and trust collapses and smashes to the ground. Your portal does need to be built; it does need to be ‘concretised’. It does not arise miraculously from the ground. If you really desire a life-giving relationship, you – as all of us – need to construct the foundation of a strong Trust Bridge, the elements of which are the ENPs: expectations, needs and promises that are acknowledged as ever changing, always evolving. And this evolution – like all growing things – requires nurture and care which is embodied in honest communication. Trust is then assembled. Just remember – trust, itself, can never be ‘concretised’. It is always dependent on the strength of its foundations.

Living Proud recognises long standing contributions

Living Proud are celebrating their fortieth year of service to WA’s LGBTIQ community and some of the organisation’s long standing contributors were honoured at their recent Annual General Meeting. Coin Longworth, Dr Vivienne Cass and Giz Watson were awarded life memberships. Each were acknowledged for their tireless work in providing advocacy and support to the community and were recognised for their pioneering work. Also highlighted at the AGM was the significant growth in the number of volunteers contributing time, energy and skills to the organisation’s programs. The last 12 months have been a busy time with the former Gay and Lesbian Community Services rebranding and changing their name to Living Proud. The launch of the national Q-Life telephone service has given more people access to services that allow them to improve their mental health. Other achievements in the last year include delivering the Opening Mental Closets Mental Health Training program to many groups in the city as well as rural and remote areas and the development of additional resources to assist the local community. Last year Living Proud launched a booklet ‘Your Guide to Living Proud’ a collection of positive messages from LGBTI role models alongside information and strategies for people in the LGBTI community to embrace the notion of living proud. health Striking revelations occurred last month. Two separate studies on the effectiveness of Truvada to prevent HIV were stopped prematurely, because early results were so good that having untreated participants became unethical. Truvada is a medication currently used to treat people with HIV. Truvada pills are currently being studied in HIV negative participants as a way of preventing HIV infection, this strategy is known as PrEP (Pre Exposure Prophylaxis).

Hate Condoms? Ethical Choices Now Include Truvada

The PROUD trial is the first of the studies to announce to all participants the opportunity to take up PrEP. The study was set up to discover if the benefit of taking Truvada (daily dosing, single pill) by negative guys would be cancelled out by men using condoms less or not at all. So 545 men were randomised into two groups, all participants were offered regular STI testing, condoms, safer sex support and behavioural survey and monitoring. However, one group received Truvada immediately and the second group deferred treatment with Truvada by a year. Although the official results of the study are not expected until early 2015, the results were so effective in the Truvada group that it triggered an ethical threshold set before the study began, now everyone in the study has been offered Truvada for PrEP. The second trial titled IPERGAY (400 participants) is exciting because instead of daily dosing of Truvada it attempts an “on-demand” strategy for taking Truvada, which is more applicable to the real world. This study set up to discover how effective Truvada would be if you took two pills 24hours before when you thought you were going to have sex or a minimum of 2hours before (e.g. on a Friday for Saturday

night sex). Then, a daily single pill dosing while you’re shagging away (e.g. for some virile men this could last a week). When you think you’re finished take two final doses 24hrs apart. Hmm, lets make this strategy a bit simpler, -essentially before you have sex have some Truvada in your blood system, while romping maintain Truvada in your blood system by daily dosing, when you’re finished dose yourself for another two days. Simpler still, take Truvada 1day before, during and two days after you actually had sex (2+1+1+1). I think overtime the creativity of gay men will finesse this prevention strategy further. Importantly the effectiveness of Truvada in the trial again triggered the study’s ethical threshold and all participants were offered Truvada. In the US Truvada has already been approved for the purpose of HIV prevention in gay men who are negative. This happened after the iPrEx trial, and subsequently iPrEx OLE trial both demonstrated 100% effectiveness of Truvada in preventing HIV if you had sufficient amounts of Truvada in your blood. This equated to a minimum of taking Truvada (single pill daily dosing) 4 times a week. What does this mean for Australian gay men? Currently Truvada is legal and can be purchased at penthouse prices privately through your friendly HIV medication prescribing GP. There are some Australian PrEP trials (e.g. VicPrEP) currently underway to confirm the feasibility and science of introducing PrEP in Australia. Participants of PrEP trails get access to Truvada for free. If, like Gough Whitlam you believe in free universal health care for everyone then “it’s time” to advocate on behalf of sexually active gay men.

We have a right to choose our preferred method of HIV protection. Next time you attend STI testing start demanding access to Truvada. The business case is also favourable for using Truvada as a strategy in a targeted way. Consider the simple lifetime cost of treating someone with HIV (e.g. 40+ years multiplied by $15,000 per year for HIV medication). $600,000 times approximately 1000 new infections every year, that’s $600 million potentially added to the PBS every year. Now consider targeted Truvada to the 1% of highly active gay men (e.g. 2200 times $15000 per year), $33million per year. These highly sexually active men would only have to prevent 55 new infections per year for the government to break even on its investment. These inaccurate playful numbers would not stand up against health economist scrutiny, however the maths is accurate enough to make the point that investment in HIV prevention and HIV cure research creates a massive public health return in time. Preventable infections with targeted Truvada as PrEP could make a significant dent in the Australian HIV epidemic. Given the international science, delays in the introduction of targeted Truvada is not only potentially unethical it could also be described as a material systemic failure of public health policy in Australia. Some people who struggle with condoms and acquire HIV, would have every right to become extremely angry at having been denied Truvada as a prevention option. Take Pride in your Sexual Health and Get Tested With November seeing PrideFEST take over Perth, there’s no better opportunity to stop and reflect on many aspects of our lives. One of the aspects that definitely shouldn’t be forgotten or left out is our sexual health. As with many things, getting tested for HIV and sexually transmitted infections is one that can easily get pushed down our to-do lists. But just like getting our cars serviced or teeth checked, it’s important to have regular maintenance for better performance. Maintenance for sexually active gay men and men who have sex with men, means routine HIV and STI testing. The more

sexually active we are, the more often we should be testing, generally every 3 months, 6 months or yearly.

When we take care of our sexual health and get tested regularly we can ensure we are doing our part to minimize any issues for us personally and any consequences for the broader community. We can minimize the amount of HIV, and STIs such as Syphilis, Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia circulating amongst us. For people testing for their first time, it’s not uncommon for people to feel scared or anxious. The idea of testing might be a bit of an unknown, but once guys come in for their first
