SANDRA BERNHARD 7
Important Conversations Late last month, just a few days after Christmas, the story of a young girl’s death spread quickly around the world. Leelah Alcorn was a seventeen year old transgender girl who lived in Ohio in the USA, and she made the decision to end her life. In a note published to her Tumblr account after her death she spoke of her family’s difficulty accepting her declaration that she was transgender. Having come out to her parents at 14 years of age, her parents refused her request to undergo gender transition, they sent her to a Christian based conversion therapy program, took her out of school and banned her from using social media. Leelah said she hoped her death would spark conversations about discrimination, abuse and support for transgender people. The great tragedy of Leelah’s story is that is that she joins a long succession of people who are transgender who have not received the right support from their families and wider society. What makes this situation increasingly dire, is that Leelah Alcorn’s experience is not unique or rare, it’s simply the one that gained the media’s attention. There are many other similar experiences being lived right now without the media’s spotlight. Leelah’s family have been widely criticised since her death. In an interview on CNN her mother still referred to her by male pronouns and used her birth name. Her family had her social media accounts closed down, deleting her digital existence. The reaction to this story has been wide reaching, celebrities have highlighted the need for more attention in this area, vigils have been held around the world and when the TV series ‘Transparent’ won an award at the Golden Globes series creator Jill Soloway dedicated the award to Leelah Alcorn, and her own transgender parent. A fashion trend of painting one fingernail pink has also emerged. The most important reaction that needs to occur though is the conversations. We need to start conversations, amplify them, share them, adapt them and repeat them. We must be innovative in the way we conduct these discussions so everyone can participate in them. Many years ago a close friend (who identified as heterosexual) asked me what I thought of people who were transgender? My answer was honest, I said I didn’t understand. I added, that

while I struggled to understand, I also recognised that I had met people who couldn’t understand what it was like to be same sex attracted, and I’d hope to never treat someone negatively. Years later I was taken by surprise when my friend announced that they were beginning their own gender transformation journey. Immediately thinking back to the question my friend asked years before, I wished I’d given a better answer. Since then I’ve had the great privilege of meeting, working with and being friends with a great number of people who identify as transgender.
FRISKY & MANNISH 22
It’s not always smooth sailing though. In 2013, a thought I included in an opinion piece about the marriage equality movement was taken to be a criticism and dismissal of the needs of people who are transgender. While that was never my intention, it was incredibly regrettable and I’m eternally sorry for making the comment. A big part of the challenge is that to reach a place of understanding it has taken me years of friendships, interactions and sharing. We need to have conversations that allow us to have that experience, but we need it to happen quickly.

I don’t profess to have the answers, but let’s get on with the conversation. What should we be doing? What should society be doing? What should OUTinPerth be doing? What do our politicians need to do? What do our organisations and venues need to do? What are you going to do? Write to us, call us up, stop us in the street, tweet us, send us a SnapChat or an Instagram picture, send an email, draw a picture, connect on SKYPE, head to our Facebook page, make a video. At a time when we have more ways of communicating than ever before, there is no reason to not be in this conversation. Graeme Watson editor@outinperth.com

Comedy legend, actor, author and all around star performer Sandra Bernhard is bringing her all new one woman show ‘Sandlyland’ to Perth in March. Bernhard is renowned for her solo performances, which blend stand up comedy with music and cabaret. Bernhard chatted to OUTinPerth to give us an update on how her show is developing. “It’s going great! I just did a week at Joe’s Club in New York and put a lot of even newer material together. I did six nights and it was really fun, so I keep writing my shows and they keep evolving so by the time I get to Australia I’m sure there’ll be even newer material that’s reflecting what’s going on in the news.”
Bernhard will be returning to Australia for the fourth time. She shared that she has fond memories of working in Australia. “I shot a film in 1994 called ‘Dallas Doll’. Actually for Rose Byrne it was her first film and she played the daughter to the couple that I sort of get involved with. I spent quite a bit of time there, went to strange places like Inverell, I went to the Blue Mountains. So I’ve had some time to see things over there so it’ll be nice to be there and be busy too.” Bernhard is no stranger to performing for the screen. In the role of Nancy Bartlett on ‘Roseanne’, she made history portraying one of television’s first openly lesbian recurring characters. A new generation of queer viewers will be familiar with Bernhard from ‘The L Word’, in which she plays Charlotte Birch, the writing teacher who takes to task burgeoning writer Jennifer Schecter.
I always like to go against whatever’s going on… I like to stand out. ‘Sandyland’ gives Bernhard an opportunity to do what she does best, performing alongside her band The Flawless Zircons. “There are stories about my life in show business and my travels and relationships and funny observations all wrapped together around music. So there’s original songs that I’ve co-written and cover songs, so it’s a whole wonderful, compelling performance.” For those who haven’t yet been to one of her shows, Bernhard has some words of advice. “I would tell them to come with an open mind and just sit there and take it all in. Be a sponge. Because there’s no way to fully describe what I do, other than stylistically and I expect for people that haven’t seen me that they’re just surprised because it’s not like the average performance. I also like to keep it high brow and upbeat and smart and sophisticated and kind of a throwback to old show business in a certain way and it’s not crass. My work is not crass or common.”
Bernhard explained how her role on ‘The L Word’ reflects her own performance, and why her comedy is appealing to the LGBT audience. “I always like to go against whatever’s going on, I don’t want to be a part of a big amalgam, I like to stand out. I played a character that wasn’t defined by her sexuality as I’m not defined by mine in real life. But you know, my work appeals to the gay audience because it’s smart and it’s fun, and it’s campy, a little sophisticated and it’s all the things that the gay audience are attracted to.” ‘Sandyland’ is at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco on March 10th at 7:30pm. St Christopher is the patron saint for travelers, while St Francis de Sales is the patron saint for journalists (who knew?) and even comedians have a patron saint with St Lawrence in their corner. But is there a patron saint for the queer community?
Well not officially, but there are a few saintly figures that LGBTIQ people look towards. Saint Sergius and Saint Bacchus Sergius and Bacchus were fourth century Roman soldiers who have been revered as martyrs and saints. The pair served in the army of Roman Emperor Galerius until it was revealed that they were secret Christians. It is believed that Bacchus died while being tortured and that Sergius was eventually beheaded. Historian John Boswell, who specialized in LGBTIQ history in the Christian faith, suggested that Sergius and Bacchus may have had a romantic relationship, leading to raise in the popularity of the two saints in the queer community. Boswell, who was History Professor at Yale University wrote widely about LGBTIQ history until his AIDS related death in 1994. Sergius and Bacchus are probably the best known paired saints. Saint Sebastian of Avia Sebastian was an early Christian saint who is believed to have died around the year 288. He is often depicted as being tied to a tree wounded by arrows. It is believed that he was rescued from the tree by Irene of Rome but later criticized Roman Emperor Diocletian, who order that Sebastian be clubbed to death. Sebastian is often seen as a patron saint for soldiers and as a defense against ‘the plague’. Why‘s he popular in the queer community?
was known by the name Il Sodoma – a name he was bestowed due to his homosexuality. Modern depictions include a piece by French photography duo Pierre et Gilles and in 1976 queer film director Derek Jarman created his film ‘Sebastiane’. More recently, artist Wolfgang Tilmans has portrayed St Sebastian in an AIDS context bringing together two of the areas he is most associated with.
Well for one thing he’s always looks pretty good in the many painting that have depicted him, often as a muscled youth with curly hair. In the 16th century he was depicted by Italian artist Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, who
When the writer Oscar Wilde was released from prison, he spent the last three years of his life living in exile in France. During this time Wilde took on the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth. Tennessee Williams also used the name Sebastian for a gay character in his play ‘Suddenly, Last Summer’. Graeme Watson

feature Ten years after John Howard put in place legislation specifying that marriage could only take place between opposite sex couples, the battle for marriage equality for LGBT couples continues to rage on. Across Australia, many same sex couples are holding wedding ceremonies to celebrate their relationships despite their unions not being recognized by the government. OUTinPerth spoke to Australian Marriage Equality’s National Director Rodney Croome and Deputy National Director Ivan Hinton-Teoh about the future of same sex marriage
Image: Same Love Photography
Croome was recently awarded Tasmanian of the year in recognition of his work advocating for the rights of LGBTI Australians. “It’s a great honour to be named Tasmanian of the Year. It sends a really positive message about how much Tasmania has changed for the better.” Croome says that a marriage equality victory is not as distant as it may seem. “We are closer than it seems. The Coalition still doesn’t have a conscience vote and we still aren’t sure if the numbers are there even with a conscience vote. These barriers to reform might
seem formidable. But in my experience political resistance to a particular reform crumbles when it becomes clear that reform is inevitable. It is dawning on politicians that marriage equality will happen and some are consequently asking themselves, “why drag this out any longer?” We need people in their local electorates to be reinforcing this message.” Having been advocating for LGBT rights for decades, Croome remains optimistic when he reflects on how popular opinion has changed. “The difference in 2015 from, say 2010-12 when debate was at its height is that the community debate is now essentially over. 72% of Australians are on side and there is majority support in every demographic, including people
of faith and the elderly. The challenge now is to encourage supporters to make their views known to their local politicians.” Deputy National Director Ivan Hinton-Teoh concurred, and had a profound experience after marrying his partner Chris in Canberra in 2013, before the High Court overturned legislation allowing same sex marriage in the ACT. The couple married in Canada in 2008, but felt that they should take the opportunity to marry on Australian soil. “When I proposed to Chris, and I did so without him knowing what I was planning on doing, I proposed to him in the press conference directly after the ACT passed the law with all the cameras and journalists there.” Hinton-Teoh said the public response was overwhelming. “I’m still staggered by the
public reaction to it because Chris and I were approached by members of the community that we didn’t know. And I’m talking about the broader community, not the LGBTI community. We had strangers come up to us and hug us and shake us by the hand and congratulate us and tell us that they’re just so happy for us.” Hinton-Teoh said the experience reinforced his motivation to continue fighting for marriage equality so that other couples could share that joy. “It is distinguishable gap in the life experience of LGBTI Australians where they are for their sexual orientation or gender identity denied the opportunity of celebrating their relationship among family friends. And the joy that I experienced and the sense of place that
I felt in being able to do this among family, friends, neighbours, colleagues where I could walk outside of my house and feel equal to everyone around me. That novelty should not be a novelty shortly.” The High Court overturned the legislation that briefly legalized same sex marriage in the ACT in 2013. Many same sex couples celebrate their relationships in wedding ceremonies despite their unions not being recognized as marriage by the government. “It’s very interesting because it goes to the heart of the history of marriage. Marriage actually pre-dates government intervention and legislation, it was a social contract between two people celebrated by their communities well before the church and the government got involved.” Hinton-Teoh said.
The activist still strives for legalization of same sex marriage so that couples can enjoy the support of a community that recognizes the dignity of their relationships. “We’re moving to a position where society recognizes the dignity of their relationship to a point, but they can see that there’s this one more step that’s yet to happen. We know of partners who’ve passed away before they’ve had the opportunity of celebrating their relationship in precisely the way they deserve, in precisely the way they should be entitled to.” Hinton-Teoh said. “When people are getting married it is a moment of joy, regardless of whether or not the federal government chooses to recognise their relationship.” Sophie Joske

feature Recently the couple converted their civil partnership to a marriage at the British Consulate. The couple said it was important to them to make the upgrade. “It means we are equal to heterosexual couples. Our commitment to each other no longer feels second class. Everyone who wished to enter into a legally binding commitment can have the same. You often have to explain what a Civil Partnership means, you don’t need to do this with a marriage.” Bridget said. Celebrant Joanne Armstrong from Wild Heart Celebrations has noticed a growing number of same sex couples moving forward with ceremonies. “People are having a ceremonies that are just the same weddings, they don’t want to reminded that theirs is not the real thing, because to them it is.” Armstrong said.
When New Zealand approved marriage equality in 2013 almost a third of the people taking vows in the first few months were from overseas. When couples were granted the ability to convert established civil unions from the United Kingdom to marriage status, British Consulates in Australia had couples queuing up to register. For many more couples the focus is on simply making a commitment before friends and family. For Nadine and Dani Wright Toussaint the reason for having a wedding was pretty clear. Before starting a family they wanted to mark a significant stage in their relationship and share it with friends and family. In May 2013 the couple gathered their friends and family for a ceremony to celebrate their relationship. “We knew we wanted to start having kids.” Dani said, “We’d been domestic partners and had legal standing as a de facto couple for eight years already, but if we were going to have a kid we wanted that extra evidence just in case anything ever happened, and even though it’s not
a legal document, it does give you more stead.” Nadine adds. “It was important to us that our kids would know that our relationship was something that was real and recognised. That was really important to us at the time, and it still is. We want them to grow up and know that we are really committed to each other and that our community in terms of our friends and family were supportive of that.” “Plus it’s an opportunity to celebrate and revel in our long standing love and relationship with people that we love. Plus it’s important to have that marker for the start of the story of our family.” Dani said. The couple said the reason for having a ceremony was very personal, for them it wasn’t about activism and politics but about celebrating their commitment. “I’ve always said that I don’t actually believe in the institution of marriage,” Dani said, “but that is different from wanting to assert and celebrate our relationship and the future of our family.”
The ceremony included Dr Seuss themed handwritten invitations and a ceremony in a beautiful park. The couple chose not to have any entrances or ‘giving away’ moments and read their own personal vows. A close friend, who is a wedding celebrant, guided the ceremony. Afterwards they had a reception in a quaint laneway between some friend’s houses. “We really wanted our friends and family to be involved and in the lead up to the wedding we had monthly busy-bees to make invitations and decorations.” Nadine explained. “It was really lovely.” A little over a year later the couple welcomed their first child. For Bridget and Heather Rhodes-Moore the journey to marriage has had many stages. The British couple, who have been together since 1999, first celebrated a civil Partnership in the United Kingdom in 2007. “We celebrated our Civil Partnership in Oxfordshire, UK in front of family and close friends at our local Registry Office in June 2007 followed by a traditional reception with 100 guests.” Bridget shared.
The popular celebrant also noted that same sex couples are becoming increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of change and frustrated when they encounter marriage celebrants who don’t treat them ethically, despite a code of conduct being in place for celebrants. Armstrong shares that her experience is that the ceremonies same sex couples request are no different to everyone else’s. “If anything, I think there’s a little more time put in to thinking about the significance of marriage. People want tradition, while also wanting to be informal and relaxed and fun, every couple is different.” Another significant change Armstrong is seeing is heterosexual couples adding a comment after the monetum, the legal wording describing that marriage is only between a man and a woman. Armstrong said she wished that all celebrants would offer their clients this option. “People increasingly add a comment saying that they hope that this law changes soon”, because they want to be inclusive to their gay friends at the ceremony. ISSUE OF THE YEAR The Australian Christian Lobby has declared marriage to be the big issue of 2015. In a post of their website the lobby group argues that reason has been abandoned in the marriage equality debate as it become socially acceptable to support same sex couples desire to wed. The group claims that many people only publicly support marriage equality because they fear being labelled ‘irrelevant or dinosaurs’. The ACL calls on its members to lobby the Liberal and National parties and pressure them to resist pressure to allow a conscience vote arguing that if LNP politicians are able to make their own choice they will not be able to resist pressure from the media and LGBTIQ lobby groups. The group also highlights there is a movement with the Labor party to make the parties policy supporting marriage equality a binding policy, which would not allow Labor members a conscience vote. Graeme Watson
What could allowing same sex marriage mean to the Australian Economy? A conservative estimate put forward by M.V. Lee Badgett, a distinguished scholar from the Williams Centre for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy at UCLA suggested that if marriage equality was legalised in Australia we could expect 17,820 couples to wed within the first three years. The boost the Australian economy was estimated at $161 million dollars Plus there would be additional revenue from associated tourism from overseas guests travelling to Australia to attend weddings. It was also noted that if one state was ahead of the others in bringing in same sex marriage, they would likely get the majority of the economic benefits. The example of Tasmania leading the way predicted their economy would gain $96 million dollars.
The last census in 2011 revealed there were around 33,700 same sex couples living in Australia, although this number is considered to be conservative as some people may not wish to declare their sexuality on the census. Additionally the census does not take into account couples who do not live together. If half of the same sex couples in Australia decided to have a wedding, with the average wedding costing around $36,700, it would add around $600 million to the marriage industry. The impact would be 14% industry growth, in an industry that is expected to achieve 1.4% growth without same sex marriage. The economic benefits could go further though with people travelling to Australia to wed, and the associated tourism from overseas weddings and visiting guests. Simone Gordon
Fairday Fairday Research from Newcastle University has shown that in 2012 there 121,752 marriages registered in Australia. Business and Economic advisors IBISWorld believe the wedding industry generates around 4.3 billion dollars.

The couple told The Mirror that the driver stopped the cab and asked them to get out after driving for only a few minutes, during which time they kissed. “I asked him, ‘Are you making us get out because we are gay?’” Sloan said. “He said, ‘No, I pick up gay customers all the time but they don’t do that.’” The couple complained to Uber, stating that his reaction had taken them by surprise.
17 year old Leelah Alcorn died by suicide on the morning of December 28th in her home town of King’s Mill, Ohio. She scheduled a letter to be posthumously published on her Tumblr account, explaining that she faced a lack of acceptance of her gender identity. Alcorn wrote of her experience undergoing therapy from “christian therapists, (who were all very biased).” Activists are calling for legislation to protect transgender youth by banning the practice of attempting to change or sexual orientation or gender identity of minors in a practice known as “conversion therapy”. Over 270,000 people have signed a petition on change.org calling on President Obama to put in place what has been titled ‘Leelah’s Law’ in memorial of Alcorn.
Egypt Men Charged with Debauchery are Acquitted In December last year, 26 men were arrested in a raid on a bathhouse under suspicion that they had been having gay sex. According to ‘Al-Qahira wal Nas’ reporter Mona Iraqi, the men were “caught in the act during a group sex party” and subsequently “transported to the prosecution with no clothes”. The men have now been acquitted. Reports state that the team investigating the scene found no conclusive evidence that “homosexual acts” had taken place.

“I’ve known I was mostly gay ever since I can remember. I know it troubles many people for me to refer to myself as a lesbian considering I have a male partner. I think they gather that it trivializes the plight of the LGBTQIA community & although that couldn’t be further from the truth at this point in my life I’m trying to steer as far from labeling as possible… I’m happier being fluid and I’m happier being honest.” Australian actress Caitlin Stasey opens up about her sexuality in an interview on a new feminist website of her creation, herself.com
“If the part calls for a real ‘man’s mansalt of the earth’-type, they’re probably not going to call in a gay actor. The problem isn’t just with gay actors. Think about trans actors. Why couldn’t a trans actor play a hotel manager or a best friend?” ‘Looking’ actor Daniel Franzese discusses the lack of diversity in Hollywood casting in an interview with Queerty.

“I am thoroughly, completely, delightedly happy to be gay. It suits me. I am really good at it. And yet every day I am jealous of straight people, because that private little small intimate gesture of affection has never once been mine... Gay people do not get to hold hands in public without first considering the risk.” Activist and drag queen Panti Bliss on public displays of affection in her TEDx talk.

POLITICAL James Welsby is heading Fringe World to appear two shows, the dancer will be appear as part of the World Famous Burlesque Hour before deliver his own work ‘Hex’. The World Famous Burlesque Hour is a late night offering on the Fringe World menu. Welsby, who as a dance background said he loved being part of the show. “The work is transgressive, sexy, and outrageous. It’s a late night louche, which I love! I’ve been working with the company for about a year and a half and we’ve done lots of different types of shows.”
Welsby highlights that one of the aims of ‘HEX’ was to create an intergenerational discussion about HIV and AIDS. Since he first began making the work two years ago Welsby feels there has been a change in the queer community.
While there are a significant number of burlesque shows in the Fringe World program Welsby argues that this is the one to come and see. “There are ebbs and flows in the popularity of burlesque, a few years ago there was a lot more traditional burlesque around. That has declined a little a bit. The Burlesque Hour is a little different, it’s overtly feminine and sometimes quite shocking! It’s always innovative and it has this underground ‘90s queer theme.”
Splash! Long Weekend Spa and Foam Party
Australia Day BYO Pool Party
“’HEX’ is a one hour dance show about AIDS, activism and disco. This show is about the specter of the AIDS crisis within the gay community. For anyone who was born after 1981 we’ve grown up in a world where HIV and AIDS is a reality.
Drag Factory
“I was born in 1987, the year which has the most AIDS related deaths.” Welsby said. “ It’s also the year they released the Grim Reaper campaign, Australian’s first fear campaign and the year ACT-UP was formed.”

“At that time within my circle of friends there were several people who had discovered that they were HIV positive. There was this shifting social dynamic. You could say that maybe safe sex had gone out of popularity. There was a higher level of ignorance and apathy, and there was a spike in HIV notification. That’s why it was urgent to address this. “One of the biggest issues today is stigma, and that comes from ignorance. A lot of gay men don’t understand what an undetectable viral load is. They don’t understand that people who are HIV positive, who are informed about their status and are taking antiretroviral therapy are at such a low risk of passing the virus on. The biggest risk is not knowing your status.” See ‘The World Famous Burlesque Show’ from January 23rd to 28th, while their ‘Late Night Louche’ is on January 24th and 25th. Catch James Welsby in ‘HEX’ from February 10th to 14th. Head to www. fringeworld.com.au for tickets. Graeme Watson Image James Brown

Siena’s Famous Pizza or Pasta
“In my opinion there has been a rise in apathy.” Welsby said. “The HIV/AIDS crisis is something affects every single gay man on the planet on way or another, whether you are dealing with the virus in your body or the virus in your community, it affects every single gay man.” “What I wanted to do with ‘HEX’ was make a dance show that was both retrospective and contemporary. So it references 1981 through to 1996 very strongly, using dance styles that were popular at that time, but it’s also mashed with the contemporary experience.”
While he’s in town Welsby will also be bringing his own show ‘HEX’.

events Dynamic pop duo Frisky and Mannish are returning to the Perth Fringe for the first time since causing a scene in 2013. The pair chatted to OUTinPerth about their new show ‘Just Too Much’.
pick one act that we feel truly resonates with us on every level, it would, of course, have to be Salt 'n' Pepa. Who would you bet on in the most vicious fight to the death of all time, the Battle of the Justins, Timberlake versus Bieber? Are we talking musical battle, or physical fight? Because, if the former, Timberlake OBVS on every level; but if the latter, we wouldn't bet against Bieber. He looks scrappy (and let's not forget, he is an actual criminal).
What are you looking forward to about making a triumphant return to Perth Fringe? Known the world over as "The Good Perth" (as opposed to the cold, grey Scottish one), we're most excited about simply being back in your fine city, and its proximitous beaches. You have it all - great booze, great people, great weather. And with all this culture being dumped on your faces for a month, there's really nothing to not love.
As well as being pop music education extraordinaires, you also both have consistently great hair. Who are your hair icons and do you have tips for any readers aspiring to follicle greatness? While we are, clearly, influenced by many of pop's hair greats, not least La Roux, we try not to model our look on anyone too closely. And in terms of tips, Mannish recommends hair chalk, and Frisky says just buy it (she's not removed her wig cap since the Great Drought of 1994).
You’ve finished your Pop Education Trilogy with the three shows ‘School of Pop’, ‘The College Years’ and ‘Pop Centre Plus’. Will ‘Just Too Much’ still have educational value or are you breaking all the rules? Just Too Much is as educational, if not more - it is an education in breaking all the rules. Everyone's doing it, Miley, Bieber, Iggy, and we're on hand to ensure you tick all the boxes and stay just the wrong side of right.
Amongst this trio, who would you sleep with, marry and kill: Beyonce, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj? OK, here in England, we play a slightly less-extreme version of this - snog, marry, avoid. So let's not impregnate or murder any pop superstars for the moment, and agree that OBVIOUSLY one would snog Riri, marry Bey, and avoid Minaj (if at all possible, given we all live in the shade of her ass implants).
What new adventures do you have in store for those who come see ‘Just Too Much’? I mean, we've seen the peak of our own pop career, so it's safe to assume we're on a meltdown curve ourselves - you know, diva-fits, histrionics, sing-offs. There might also be a dream ballet, but we couldn't possibly comment.
‘Frisky and Mannish: Just Too Much’ is on at the Circus Theatre in the Perth Cultural Centre at 9:30pm from January 23rd to Sunday February 30th. Get tickets at www.fringeworld.com.au

January 2015
There are three nights that in my opinion will never fail to please; ‘Japan 4’, ‘Fresh Produce’ and ‘Yum Cha’. And as what I would call as a bit of a regular at Ambar, I’ve worked out what they’re good at (everything) and these three nights really hit it home. ‘Japan 4’ is my favourite ongoing Ambar night. Each Saturday rincers, party girls, hipsters and everyone in between flock down to Pier St car park to get involved in the infamous night that is ‘Japan 4’. Guests are treated to a whirlwind of bass and beats from local heroes such as Micah, Phill Blunt and DNGRFLD and if we’re lucky, sometimes they’ll throw in special guests just to add something a little bit extra to the night. ‘Japan 4’ is bass. Big, dirty, stinking bass. It hits you like a brick and it’s freaking awesome.
‘Fresh Produce’ is all about Perth’s new and upcoming DJs. It’s a great way to experience some new beats and support the local scene. It brings the beats and once a month the freshest guys spin from beginning to end, giving everyone a sweet taste of what they’ve got. ‘Yum Cha’ is one of Ambar’s newest endeavours and it’s the best opportunity to truly experience being off chopsticks. China takes over and there’s a sea of yum cha filled trap villains covering the floor. January’s treat is an allstar, ladies line up that I’m pretty sure will kick ass. Ambar is part of the Boomtick family which includes Villa, Flyrite and Parker. Each venue has its own niche and really nails it each time. For me, going out and partying is all about the bass. To quote a famous poet; “I’m a bassline junkie”. All I want is to walk into a club and be hit with a wall of bass and freaking awesome beats. Ambar delivers. Nuff said. You can find out more about Ambar and the other Boomtick venues at www.boomtick.com.au Alice Mod

OUTinPerth caught up with the Briefs member Fez Faanana who had just arrived back in Australia after spending most of the last year overseas. “In the last twelve month’s we’ve done about thirty weeks of touring” exclaims Fez. “It’s been pretty crazy, we’ve rarely been home – and that’s just ‘Briefs’ never mind all our solo shows and side projects.” Since they appeared at Fringe World last year, the show has been twice to Berlin and has enjoyed an acclaimed season in London, but the group is eager to return to Perth. “Perth is one of the places that really gets us,” said Fez, “People in Perth just seem to be hanging out for our kind of show.” This time around the group has had a few cast changes, meaning that the show has also evolved. Fans who watched the show before will get a lot out of a return visit. “We have changed it up a bit, we’ve got some new cast members.” Fez said, “We’ve got a cast of seven this time. We’ve got Thomas Worrel who is a disciplined aerialist and contortionist who has a dance background. He’s been on our radar for ages, so when one of our regular performers needed a break, we snapped him up.”
The group is also presenting a second show ‘Club Briefs’ that sees the artists return to their roots. The troupe began as an informal bohemian late night event in the back of a book shop in Brisbane. “’Club Briefs’ is kind of where ‘Briefs’ began. It’s a great way for us to try out new acts and invite local acts and visiting artists to be part of the show. We’d like to do a bit of a DJ experience and have performances just pop up, it’ll be different every night. “There will be nothing from our main show in ‘Club Briefs’, it’s just a chance for us to be even more risqué… For ‘Club Briefs’ we take out all the seats and have lots of pop-up performances. You might think you’re standing up the back but suddenly a performance will happen and you’ll be in the front row!” ‘Briefs The Second Coming’ is on from January 28th through to February 9th, while ‘Club Briefs’ is on from 31st January to February 8th. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT It’s been eight months since Bianca Del Rio won season six of RuPaul’s Drag Race’ but she still hasn’t left the spotlight. The queen with the razor sharp tongue has been preparing to make a film, taking a turn in musical theatre and spraying her acid wit onto audiences in very corner of the globe. In a rare stopover at home on a freezing New York night, Del Rio caught up with OUTinPerth and paused to reflect on her sudden rise to fame. “The past few months has been blessing on top of blessing and I think I haven’t been able to wrap my brain around all of it yet, because I’ve been travelling so much and kind of going there and everywhere that I have nothing to bitch about. Other than the cold, I have nothing to complain about. It’s been an amazing journey.” she said.

feature Del Rio first toured to Perth in September last year and was in such high demand she had to schedule an extra performance, fitting two high energy performances with audiences and jokes aplenty alongside meet and greets with her keenest fans. In early March she’ll return to our shores with a brand new comedy special. The performer explained that her new hourlong show will give audiences an opportunity to see her flex her muscles in an environment very different from her nightclub appearances. “With my appearances is more or less, I just come in like a loaded gun and just go at it, there really isn’t much structure to what I do when I’m out there because the audience gives you so much information and so much material. Usually they have a couple of cocktails, and normally they’re in a bar, standing around, whereas with my show, it’s more or less, you get to sit back and actually understand what has shaped my hate [laughs] into the way it is. I get a chance to tell more stories about myself, in my life that you probably didn’t know from Drag Race. And I try to keep a structure to the show. I mean there’s lots of ad libs and free moments but basically it gives you more insight into who I am and how I turned out to be the way I am.” “As far as being a drag queen for this show in particular there’s not many bells and whistles happening, there’s me onstage, just doing stand up, who happens to be in drag. So it’s not so much a drag show,
or a feast for the eye, where I’m changing costumes and creating new things, it’s literally a stand up comedian who happens to be in drag.” One of the things that sets Bianca Del Rio apart from other ‘Drag Race’ alumni is that she’s an insult comedian by trade. For her, comedy is a passion that has always gone hand in hand with drag. “It all happened at one time. I think I definitely had a flair for fashion and drag and costume and wigs and all that beforehand, and I’d also experienced theatre and been an actor so being in front of an audience is not scary for me.” Del Rio recently returned to her theatrical roots in a production of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ alongside fellow ‘Drag Race’ contestant Courtney Act and judge Michelle Visage. Del Rio enjoyed bonding with her cast mates and will be featuring her former competitor as a special guest on her Australian tour. “Shockingly, most people don’t know, but we’re actually very good friends. I know a lot of people say that and they go ‘Oh, really?’ but we actually are and when we’re together we actually complement each other in a very good way. We’re complete opposites in many visual ways, but we kind of compare it to a Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett situation where we are what we are, but we do complement each other and we do get along.”
beloved for her ability to ruthlessly tear people to pieces. At a typical Bianca Del Rio show, audience members will be gleefully jumping for an opportunity to get torn down by the lady herself. According to Del Rio, the secret to dishing it out is being able to take it. “Any time somebody’s got something hateful to say to me, I love it. Because you just never know! I mean how silly it is, that I’m a man in a wig and people are concerned about something I’m saying. It’s jokes, it’s comedy and the jokes started when I started putting on makeup, you know. It’s not that serious.” Bianca Del Rio’s Comedy Special as at the Astor Theatre at 9:15pm on March 4th. Tickets available from www.showticketing.com.au Sophie Joske
On ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Del Rio enjoyed a reputation as a “hateful bitch” with a heart of gold. It’s clear from her live performances that her notoriety precedes her, and she is widely

Cabaret sensation ‘La Soiree’ is at last making its way to Perth. The production is celebrating its tenth anniversary tour with a season at the Spiegeltent- the jewel of Fringe World 2015. Creative producer Brett Haylock chatted to OUTinPerth about how far the show has come.
show in the history of the Sydney Opera House. And so every year when we come back we have to reinvent it slightly. The spirit of the show remains the same, the kind of components within the format can change.”
“This was a tiny little alternative cabaret back in the Edinburgh Fringe, a midnight show. Way back then, nobody ever could have imagined its trajectory. When it was first created, it was a dirty kind of little subversive queer cabaret, and now over 5 million people have seen it and it’s played in Paris, London, Stockholm, Chicago, New York and taken us around the world many times.” Haylock said.
Another of the production’s distinguishing features is the proximity it allows the audience to share with the performers. “The staging is just a 2.5 metre round stage in the middle of the room. So it’s really intimate, it’s stripped right back there’s nowhere for the performers to hide and you can see everything. I mean every bead of perspiration, every muscle ripple, it’s right there and nobody’s hiding behind masks or anything.”
The producer said that the company is thrilled to be visiting Perth Fringe World. “Last winter we were in New York, in the snow, this winter we’ve been in London, so trying to convince a bunch of international artists to come to Perth in the summer is not a difficult task. That’s quite tempting to a number of people who are currently in the Northern hemisphere.”
Although performers of various disciplines and styles have graced the ‘La Soiree’ stage, there are some things that have remained consistent over the show’s ten year history. “The show has never tried to weave a narrative for be preachy about its message, it’s the same old fashioned entertainment. I guess what unites all these disparate artists, and is really heartwarming, and what happens over the course of the show is that each and every one of these eccentric characters endears themselves to an audience.”
‘La Soiree’ is a variety show featuring an all star line-up of performers skilled in anything from comedy to contortion. Haylock explained how the show came to take its form. “We’ve seen a number of these incredible artists with these amazing seven minute acts, and a lot of these artists came from the fringes of the performing arts world, whether that was from honing it off the streets, or the queer clubs of Soho, or Lower East Side Manhattan. They had this amazing material, but it kind of felt like we could create an umbrella to showcase these extraordinary artists. That’s where it originally came from. Unbeknownst to us, what we were doing, and it was kind of subconscious, is we kind of reinvented an age old format of variety, and just made it relevant to a whole new generation.” The show tours around the world with a rotating roster of 30-40 artists, but Haylock said the show’s debut in Perth gives the company an opportunity to introduce the show with its most iconic performers. “Perth is an opportunity because it’s our first time, to bring in a number of the original signature acts. Whereas in Sydney for example, the show’s played six times, we’ve played the last three summers, smashed box office records at the Sydney Opera House, it’s the longest running
Haylock gave us a sneak preview of this all-star cast. “We’re still working with the same family from ten years ago. There’s Ursula Martinez, of course, real mainstay of the London Cabaret scene, and her now infamous hanky striptease, David O’Mare in the bathtub, it’s a very very famous act now and that kind of act has been in ‘La Soiree’ from day one. The English Gents- that line up, it’s an incredibly strong line up.”
Having produced the show from its humble beginnings, Haylock has learned a thing or two about keeping a production fresh. He shared that something that has given ‘La Soiree’ its longevity is the fact that the company are still thrilled to perform. “We love it, there’s no end in sight and so we just keep going until it doesn’t become fun anymore. To go and do your job and then people stand up and scream and yell and squeal and shout when you finish your job for the day is a pretty rewarding experience. And we don’t take that for granted. It’s an extraordinary lifestyle.” Sophie Joske

Amongst the many theatrical delights at Fringe World is a show from OUTinPerth’s own Sophie Joske. In between conducting interviews about all the other shows we sat Sophie down and posed a few questions. Tell me about your new show? ‘Become a Functional Adult in Forty-Five Minutes’ is a one-woman show about whether it’s possible to ever truly feel like you’ve grown up. In it, I’ll be playing a character who is desperately trying to prove that she’s a grown up by sharing all of her adult knowledge with the audience. There’s a creepy machine that grades her performance. It’s kind of like an infomercial, but weirder. In the promotional images for the show you seem to have turned Barbie into a nipple pastie. What did Barbie do to deserve this? Barbie has been promoting unhealthy and unattainable beauty standards for decades, promoting an image that is harmful and- Ok, to be honest with you, myself and my director Catherine Bonny basically just thought it’d be funny. On the day of the shoot we were messing around with objects that promote ideas of what is grown up and what is childlike and this seemed like a perverse way to mash up the two. Plus I was hoping that we’d sell more tickets if I got my boob out. Is there a time when society expects us to have become a fully functioning adult? I think when you start approaching your mid twenties, as I am, people start asking you when you’re going to move out and you start feeling like you should get your shit together. Although I think that age of having ‘grown up’ seems to be being pushed back later and later. People my age aren’t often buying houses and getting married at the same age their parents were. So I think we’re all stumbling around in the dark, really. Your name Joske is an anagram of ‘jokes’ – has comedy always been in your blood? Actually, I come from a long line of doctors. I’m a deep disappointment to my family. Not really, they’re very supportive. I think most of my family are hilarious, but I’m not sure they’re aware of it. If you were to run away with circus what role would you be taking on? Well I’m not great with heights or horses, so that disqualifies me from the roles with the best outfits. I’d quite enjoy being a clown. I can already do a few balloon animals. ‘Become a Fully Functioning Adult’ is on at Fringe World from February 3rd to 7th. Get tickets at www.fringeworld.com

Challenged Gavin Roach enjoyed a sold out season of his previous Fringe World show ‘Confessions of a Grindr Addict’, this year returns with a brand new show. “My new show ‘I Can’t Say the F Word’ is quite different from ‘Confessions of a Grindr Addict’. It’s not as character based, this one’s more looking at my own personal struggle that I can’t say one word and why that is.” Roach said. “It takes the audience on a journey through a look at words we don’t use anymore and new words that get added to the English language. Words can really have quite an impact on our identity and who we are when we’re growing up.” Roach responds to the news that queer centric word ‘cra-cra’ has made this year list of the world’s most overused words.

Roach shares that in preparing for the show he spent some time researching words that he doesn’t like to say, alongside those that he loves to say. “I don’t have a problem with it, but a lot of people cringe at the word ‘moist’. I don’t have a problem with it unless people use it in the context of a cake. I mean, cake is not wet or dewy, it’s not moist.” Roach argues. For words we don’t use anymore Roach nominates the word ‘groak’ as a favourite.

“The show is mainly abut self-acceptance,” said Ginava Ginava. One of the performers goals in putting together the production was to provide a platform to showcase as much of Perth diverse queer talent as possible. “A lot of these drag queens rarely get a chance to perform and I wanted to give them a chance to perform something outside their comfort zone as well.” Ginava Ginava said.

Local writer/performer extraordinaire Jeffrey Jay Fowler is bringing to the stage a brand new work entitled ‘FAG/STAG’ for Fringe World 2015. “It’s about a gay guy and a straight guy and it’s very much about their friendship and I guess the politics of being friends with straight people and whether there is any politics.” Fowler explained. The show is being co-written and performed by Fowler’s real life friend and fellow playwright, Chris Isaacs, giving the relationship of the two central characters authenticity. “My character begins the play by dumping his boyfriend and then proceeds through a bit of a slutapalooza across the month or so that the play takes place in and he’s in Grindr non-stop and then the other character, named Corgan who is played by Chris is on Tinder non-stop and is a bit of a wannabe player.” The play will see this friendship put to the test. “Part of what ‘FAG/STAG’ is about is us presenting two characters with a kind of brutal honesty and letting the audience judge them and make a decision about what happens. The two characters are telling the same story, but they tell very different versions of it and then the audience has to decide whether they think either narrator was reliable or unreliable.”

Sweet as

“The first show I brought to Perth was very much autobiographical,” said Le Gateau, “This new show is inspired by a box of chocolates. Ranging from dark to milk, and I actually have a box of chocolates on stage, and there’s a variety of music to match. I go from pop to opera to jazz.”
“Just put something together out of your bedding,” proclaims Le Gateau, “You can do some amazing things with a pillow case!”
“My heart and my ears are very much in the world of opera. I love singers like Renee Fleming and Jesse Norman, they really inform what I hope to achieve. That said, if I was to hand you my iPod playlist it would run from Renee Fleming to Bjork to Celine Dion and back to Oletta Adams and Sinead O’Connor and Annie Lennox – it jumps all over the place, I get inspirations from everywhere. ”

Joel Creasey is heading home for Fringe World to perform his brand new show. He chatted to Graeme Watson about searching for the perfect Caesar Salad, the benefits of having a stylist, and celebrity recognition. Hi Joel, how are you doing? I’m great! Do you know this is the seventh time you’ve chatted to OUTinPerth? We’ve interviewed you more than anyone else. I’m just obsessed with you guys, I can’t get enough. The runner up is Tina Arena, who has had five interviews, but we felt we should highlight that Tina has taken us to more cocktail parties. Well we are similar Tina and I, I’ll take her down. You did once buy me a beer at YaYas. I’m such a tight-arse. Tell me about your new show you’re bringing to town? It’s going to be the world debut of the show, so it’s a lot of pressure. It’s called ‘Hurricane’ and it’s all about the crazy times I’ve had over the last year. I had a celebrity feud with two time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, although he’s not aware that he’s in a celebrity feud with me. I took twenty German porn stars night clubbing, I accidently found myself on an American Military base by mistake. I’m sure you fitted in just fine there. I was wearing camouflage pants, skinny legs – but I think I pulled it off. You’ve been round the world in the last year though. I was doing my old show in London, that was great, I did a week and had a really great time there. Then I took my boyfriend on holiday with my family and then spent some time in New York and L.A. I’ve been all over the place.
I’ve never taken my boyfriend on holiday with my family, these worlds have been kept apart. There were moments when my parents were talking and I’d think ‘Oh God, maybe I shouldn’t have brought him’, but he’s pretty cool. You’re looking pretty slick in your promo photo.Thank you very much, there was a lot of air brushing. You’ve got clothes on this time, that’s a pretty nice suit. Last time you were naked. I do have clothes this time, I had just got back from LA and I was a little chubby. About 18 months ago when I started getting a lot of TV work I hired this guy, I mean I don’t use him all the time, but he dressed me and gives me things to wear. He organizes my photo shoots, its makes a world of difference, I don’t know why more comedians don’t do it. Eating in America is quite an experience, you go into your first restaurant and suddenly understand what Oprah was on about when she talked about portion control. I know everything is huge in America! I ordered a salad and it could have fed a family of six. Salads are strange in America, I tried to get a Caesar salad and it was just lettuce and sauce. I was like ‘where is the chicken? Where is the egg? Where’s the parmesan?” My boyfriend was confused by me wanting an egg. I’m obsessed with finding the perfect Caesar salad, I’ve travelled the cafés of Perth looking for one, I even wrote an article about it. Where is the best Caesar salad in Perth?
I don’t know, I haven’t found it yet. I made my boyfriend a proper Caesar salad but he didn’t understand it. In America they treat pumpkin as a sweet thing, I made a savory pumpkin salad one night for friends and they couldn’t take it in, they still talk about it. It was my effort to give them some Australian culture. Do you think you could live in America? I’m going to give a go later this year, I really do love America and I think I unfairly give it hard time. What do you miss about Australia when you’re overseas? I really miss getting occasionally recognised. There was a time we were in America trying to go to this gay bar and nobody was getting in, and I thought if I was in Australia I would have known the manager and been able to get in. I have found vegemite in LA, so I have that there now, I think most of all I miss the coffee, you just can’t find good coffee in America. See Joel Creasey’s show ‘Hurricane’ at Fringe World on January 23rd and 24th, with an additional show just announced for Sunday January 25th. Head to www.fringeworld.com.au Graeme Watson

What was it like exploring the works of Annie Lennox in comparison to your last show, which was foray into the works of Madonna? K
Annie was my idol growing up, she was my first pop hero, contrary to me doing a show about Madonna. Annie was my idol, I had all the Eurythmics music on cassette and vinyl; it was the ’80s. ‘Sweet Dreams’ the song was actually my first pop memory and I remember it being on the radio, and I must have seen the video clip too, because I just remember that song being like a mantra. Which how Annie has described it. It doesn’t have verses or chorus, it’s just repeating this idea over and over. I was like, “Wow! This is pop music and I love it!” I would have been about nine years old. She was quite a confronting pop star in the ‘80’s just visually, when I was a kid I was a little bit afraid of her. Well she looked like a man and had this incredible ivory skin, she looked a bit like David Bowie really, back when he was going through his alien from outer space phase. She looks very other-worldly, but she certainly changed. By the time the ‘Revenge’ album came out, it was filled with guitars and they were a touring band and Annie was there is her red brassiere and red lipstick. Suddenly she was uber-feminine, but there’s always a strength with her, even when she’s pretending and playing dress-ups. In developing the show did you discover a lot of things you didn’t know about Annie Lennox? Mainly I learned more about her relationship with David Stewart. I’d always thought that maybe they’d flirted with the idea of romance, but they had been a very serious couple for about four years. It’s hard to imagine that you’d go on and work with your ex for years. Well obviously that was the source of a lot of frustration and pain, but also a creative catalyst. Those wonderful songs about heartbreak and betrayal and jealously. I’m sure more than Annie would like to admit so many of those songs came out of that situation of her working with her ex-lover and dealing with all of those feelings.

I reckon ‘Who’s That Girl’ is just about Dave and him dating other women. In the video they do a whole lot of play acting, but I think it’s very real. The reason the songs resonate is because they come from places of truth. It was interesting to find out about the depth of their love, and the subsequent pain that came out of that. As a solo artist Annie Lennox has mainly recorded cover material which is in some ways is a little disappointing. She has and I don’t cover that in this show because it’s not about her as a singer. I don’t iminate her, either visually or sonically. The show is about her story and what she puts into her lyrics. I don’t sing ‘No More I Love Yous’, people are always surprised to find out that she didn’t write it. There are quite a lot of recurring themes in Annie Lennox’s work. There’s two songs called ‘Angel’, and then there’s ‘Must be an Angel (Playing with my heart)’, there’s s song called ‘Revenge’ on an early album, and then their later album is also called ‘Revenge’. She’s always singing about angels. I didn’t realise, until preparing for this show that Annie Lennox was born on Christmas Day. I think that’s a wonderful bit of synchronicity as part of the universe. Whether you’re a Christian or not there’s something special about that day. I find that fascinating, and tend too have angels as a motif. Have you see Annie Lennox perform live? I sat outside at the cricket ground in Adelaide, I think it was the revenge tour. I would have been in year six or seven. I had tickets to the ‘We Two Are One’ tour, which was about five years later. That was the tour where she famously left the stage in Sydney early on in the concert because she’d lost her voice, and she cancelled her Adelaide show, I was absolutely devastated! I’ve never had the chance to see her. Sweet Dreams: The Songs of Annie Lennox plays from February 3rd to 7th at Fringe World. Get tickets at www.fringeworld.com

Really, it just started as a joke between the two of us. We thought of this idea about two old vaudeville performers, and figured, “Surely only us and our closest friends will ever laugh at this.” We’ve always both been drawn to older styles of performance, either to ‘70s and ‘80s drag idols like Bette Midler, or to cartoonish big band music of the 20s-30s. I think it’s our overlapping of interest in exaggerated forms of theatre that helped bring us together to make this show. I love the audience participation aspect of the show—do you have any favourite moments from past shows?
The Vaudevillians
The audience participation bits are some of our favorite bits too. No matter how many times we’ve done the show, those parts always change and can still sometimes make us break out laughing. Like the guy who decided to bench-press Kitty… or the man whose gum I took from his mouth...
The Award Winning Vaudevillians are Back in Perth for Fringe World!
their original music has been unceremoniously co-opted by artists of the modern era.
How did you find performing in the middle of a heatwave last time you were in Perth? (fingers crossed this time that it’ll be a lot cooler)!
If you’ve ever seen RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon perform, you’ll know she’s mesmerising. Add to her alluring presence the musical genius that is Major Scales, and you have ‘The Vaudevillians’.
The hilarious couple perform hits from the likes of Janis Joplin and Madonna… It’s vintage cabaret, with a hint of drag, and a healthy dose of audience engagement. Major Scales spoke to Claire Alexander from the road on their way to Perth.
It wasn’t easy! I sweated through my share of suits every night (have you ever tried to air out a vintage tux?). But we both lost several pounds from it, so that felt great! Best workout plan ever! Besides, who doesn’t like a 6 foot, sweaty woman!?
The premise of The Vaudevillians is so unique! How did you conceive of the show, and what drew you to Vaudeville as a setting?
Catch The Vaudevillians at Fringe World from 29th January to 6th February. Tickets are available from www.fringeworld.com.au/
They’re the hottest act ever frozen alive, and they’re coming to Perth this month for Fringeworld. The show is driven by the 1920s duo, Kitty Witless (Jinkx Monsoon) and Dr. Dan Von Dandy (Major Scales), who have just thawed out from being frozen in the prime of vaudeville, only to find that

Syd Arthur A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble (Amorphous Androgynous)
Madonna Rebel Heart After a work in progress mix of Madonna’s new album leaked the Material Girl responded by giving the first six tracks of her upcoming album a rush release. The Diplo produced ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’ features Nicki Minaj and features a modern RnB sound, on the second track ‘Illuminati’ Madonna name checks everyone from Justin Bieber to Barack Obama. ‘Unapologetic Bitch’ might be the singer’s first foray into reggae and it’s a great groove. ‘Devil Pray’ is country tinged, while ‘Ghosttown’ is a big ballad. Lead single ‘Living for Love’ is a giant ‘hands in the hair’ dance number. Based on this sample, we can’t wait for the whole album. Graeme Watson
British psychedelic DJ’s Amorphous Androgynous, who also perform under the moniker Future Sound of London, have taken the tunes of psych-rock band Syd Arthur and transformed them into a collection of lush and trippy tracks. Filled with bird twerps and the sound of waterfalls, reverbed guitars and the occasional violin and sitar this is one to listen to with the headphones on. Check out key tracks ‘Ode (Summer is leaving me behind)’, ‘Edge of the Universe’ and ‘Back Planet Eyes’. With most of the tracks clocking in at over 7 minutes length this is a classic psychedelic experience. - Graeme Watson
Jackie Onassis Mixtape
D’Angelo and The Vanguard Black Messiah Neo-soul singer D’Angelo has just released his third album, 15 years since his last record and 20 years after his debut – this is an artist who likes to take his time. The album kicks off with ‘It Aint Easy’, starting off with grinding blues guitars, the amazing vocals appear just seconds later. It’s deep and funky, reminiscent of 70’s Sly Stone. Lead single ‘Sugah Daddy’ is filled with trumpets, tinkering pianos and laid back grooves. ‘Betray My heart’ is a light jazz number, while ‘Really Love’ is focused around a soft Spanish guitar. Play this one late at night. Graeme Watson

Sydney based hip-hop duo Jackie Onassis have started the year by giving their new mixtape ‘Sushi’ away for free through their Soundclound page. Opening up with ‘Breathe’ featuring cool piano and laid back vocals. The beats picks up on ‘We Ride’ and ‘Sushi’ really gets down and features a guest rap from Split Syndicate’s Jimmy Nice. ‘NSY’ has much more electronic sound as the band raps about relationships. The final track ‘One Thing’ throws some solid punches as they rap about how a girl, “can only be one thing to me”, the tracks get really interesting towards the end when it is slowed down and mangled. - Graeme Watson
Love Letters Californian synth heavy post punk band that sounds like Joy Division Floating Points – Nuits Sonores epic 12 minutes of danceable beats and squelches School 94 – Like You great indie rock track from Swedish group Sare Havlicek – White Russian (Lazy Summer) perfect disco tune to accompany a cocktail, a pool and a stunning sunset Amen Dunes – Song to the Siren Hundreds of artists have
Kindness Otherness The first album from UK funk disco act Kindness was a revelation filled with great grooves and unexpected tunes, most notably a take on the ‘Eastenders Theme’. Here on his follow album things become somewhat bland, the phrase all filler, no killer seems apt. The album does have its highlights, Robyn provides guest vocals on ‘Who Do You Love’, and Devonte Hynes and Tawiah duet on the laid back ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’, while lead single ‘World Restart’ has some sultry trumpets and bass. Overall though, it’s a bit boring. - Graeme Watson

Sharna Lockyer is a local jewelery designer who takes joy in all things kitsch. Her brand ‘Off the Wagon’ features necklaces, rings and other unique pieces made to look like cups of tea, whales, Nintendo controllers, various foods and other adorable items. Her designs are astoundingly realistic, down to the sesame seeds on a burger bun and the melted butter on a slice of toast. Lockyer says the intricacy comes down to her handmade approach. “I use tools like razorblades or needles or fine point and cut the design out and mould most of it with my fingers.” she said. Most of Lockyer’s pieces are made with polymer clay, carefully shaped, set and hand-painted. It’s a very detailed process. “If I’m experimenting with a new piece that I’m not very familiar with it can take up to five hours for me to get it right, but then the pieces after that come a little quicker.” To keep her designs fresh, Lockyer keeps her eye on what’s popular in food and fun. “I do like to go through those food trends. Lots of people are liking Gaytimes at the moment. They’re very popular. But hopefully I’ll just keep practising and keep getting up my repertoire and just make more and sell them on a bigger basis.” You can find ‘Off the Wagon’ at www. facebook.com/offthewagondesign Sophie Joske

FILM REVIEWS Kingsman (MA)
Directed by Dan Gilroy Colin Firth is the perfect gentleman as Harry Hart, a member of a super-secret organisation. Using a tailor shop on Savile Row London as their front, the smartly dressed gentlemen fight baddies without government intervention. However the young recruits competing for a spot in the organisation include a female and a working class criminal - Hart having rescued the wayward youth from prison as the boy’s father had died while saving his life. Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin (Taron Egerton) has the brains, the body and the charm to become one of the next generation of stylish crime fighters. Humour and action mix easily in this slick film with many nods to the Bond films keeping the audience on their toes. It’s highly implausible and highly entertaining as they chase after the psychotic baddie - tech genius Valentine (Samuel L Jackson) who intends to take over the world using people’s cell phones.
Selma (MA)
Directed by Ava DuVernay The right to vote was first granted to black Americans (or at least black males) in 1870 but nearly 100 years after, that right was being systematically obstructed by local registrars. By 1965, there were counties in Alabama where not a single black person had voted in any election for the previous 50 years. In spring of 1965, Dr Martin Luther King (David Oyelowo), the young pastor who was becoming the nation’s most influential moral voice for nonviolent struggle against racism, decided to lead a protest. The march for the right to vote started in Selma, Alabama. Ava DuVernay’s emotional film not only recreates the triumphant march but also brings to the screen a flawed hero. There are no great speeches as King overcomes his doubts to inspire the people (black and white) to fight to defeat entrenched racism. Bathed in a golden light, the drama uses archival footage of this momentous event.
Unbroken (MA)
Directed by Angelina Jolie There’s been a considerable amount of publicity surrounding Angelina Jolie’s second feature film. Firstly she took her tribe to Australia for 3 months to shoot the $US65million film. Secondly, the film is based on the incredible life of Louie Zamperini who went from being an Olympic athlete to a fighter pilot in World War II before surviving 47 days on a raft after crashing into the Pacific and then incarceration in a Japanese prisoner of war camp … only to die a short time before the film was released. The film is a huge undertaking with relatively unknown actors. In 2011, ‘In the Land of Milk and Honey’, a drama set in war-torn Bosnia, received a luke-warm reception but ‘Unbroken’ will definitely be included in the next round of awards. Apart from Jolie’s direction, Jack O’Connell as Zamperini and Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known are particularly good as the two protagonists.
Love is Strange (m)
Directed by Ira Sachs
Together for 39 years, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) decide to honour each other by getting married. Amidst the support of family and friends, it is a joyous occasion. Unfortunately, a consequence of them declaring their love is that George loses his teaching position at a Catholic school. With Ben already retired, they are forced to sell their New York apartment and find temporary accommodation. Ben finds himself sharing a bunk bed with his 16 yearold nephew Joey (Charlie Tahan) and George takes the couch at a neighbouring apartment. Director, openly gay Ira Sachs, tells a very personal story that is full of heart and brings up some interesting issues. Although Ben and George are loved and accepted by their family and friends, living in close proximity exposes the limitations to this acceptance. Love is Strange screens at Somerville 9-15 February and Joondalup 17-22 February.

Is Joel Creasey Heading to Africa? Channel Ten has revealed some details of who will be taking part in the Australian version of ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’. The network has confirmed that a hot young comedian will be taking part leading many to speculate that Joel Creasey might be heading off to the African jungle. We’re pretty sure that Joel could hack in the wilderness, but his constant singing of musicals might send some other celebrities over the edge.

The fast-paced world of roller derby is about to get more queer than ever before. The Vagine Regime, a community of skaters which aims to promote the inclusion of LGBT people in roller derby, is hosting Western Australia’s first queer bout on January 18th. WA co-founders Nurse Stax and Mary Fagdalene caught up with OUTinPerth to tell us more about the sport and its queer players. To get acquainted, the players share the stories behind their derby names. “I’m a nurse and used to fall over lots. Still do really.” shared Nurse Stax. For Mary Fagdalene, her name was a suggestion from a friend. “She found it hilarious that I identified as both Christian and queer and thought my derby name should reflect these seemingly conflicting worldviews. She really liked the idea that I’d get called ‘fags’ and that it would ‘out’ me in such a big way when it had been such a challenge a few years earlier. This particular friend was the first woman I ever kissed and was instrumental in pulling my very fearful self out of the closet so I think it brought her great delight knowing that I’d have such a gay name. Now it’s a name I very much own myself and am happy to be recognised as an openly queer woman.” Roller derby has a substantial queer following which is reflected in the international presence of the Vagine Regime. “I think it has such a strong queer following as it is a safe place for women to be strong. They are not judged for who they are and can be comfortable with being with whoever they want. And because strong women are sexy women, that other women want to watch. “ Mary Fagdalene concurs. “My take on that is that women in roller skates playing an aggressive sport is super hot. It’s not even that the sport is dominated by queer women by any stretch of the imagination but it displays women in ways that we don’t often see in society. Derby provides an outlet to demonstrate a strong physicality, aggression and competitiveness

which are attribute that aren’t necessarily encouraged in women. Speaking for myself, this was a large attraction to the sport because it provided an outlet to be the kind of unusual woman that I am. Whether you play the sport or not this is an element that attracts women of all persuasions and walks of life whether it’s as a spectator, a skater or an official.” The players are hoping that by celebrating this queer following with a dedicated bout, the sport will help cultivate an LGBT-positive atmosphere. Mary Fagdalene told us a bit more about what the organisation hopes to achieve. “The Vagine Regime internationally aims to promote the sport of roller derby and create a culture of acceptance and celebration within it for queer people. In WA our hope is to foster and develop this as much as possible.” “The Vagine Regime aims to build an international community of queer derby folk. Through a commitment to inclusive solidarity we hope to create networking opportunities, cultivate acceptance, and foster derby love matches.” Said Nurse Stax. According to Mary Fagdalene, inclusivity is especially important. “Whilst it might not be a big thing to be ‘out’ in derby, it can still be a very difficult to be queer in the world. For gender queer or trans people, being involved in sport can be very challenging. VR has worked to advocate for the acceptance of trans women in the sport and to call out discrimination where it is present. If we can build a safe and accepting environment within our sport then it can make a big difference in the lives of individuals external to it.” WA’s First Queer Roller Derby Bout is at the Morley Rollerdrome on Sunday January 18th at 6.45pm. The new production that opened at Crown Theatre this week is an impressively grand production that must be seen. The show features brilliant performances, visually stunning sets and the music will fill your heart. For the uninitiated, ‘Les Miserables’ follows the life of Jean Valjean. We meet him as he is given parole after 19 years imprisonment. His crime, stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s son. Valjean breaks his parole and runs away, a priest takes him in – but Valjean steals
‘Les Miserables’ is not like the other big musicals. It’s a significantly more complex story line, its themes are bold and virtuous and the music is operatically rich.
all his silver. Valjean is caught, but when the priest shows him mercy he decides to lead a better life. Eight years later Valjean has assumed a new identity as a town mayor and business man. We meet Fantine, a woman who has fallen on hard times, the nefarious innkeepers the Thenardiers, who look after Fantine’s daughter Cosette and the innkeepers’ own daughter Eponine. All along Valjean is pursued by the relentless Inspector Javert, and when Valjean’s identity his revealed he flees again. In the second half of the story, set another nine years later, Valjean has relocated to Paris. He looks after Cosette who has fallen in love with a young student, Marius. Eponine is also in love with Marius, who is at the centre of a student revolution. Once again Inspector Javert appears. While other musicals rely on the spectacle of a helicopter landing on stage, a flying car or witch, or chimney sweeps dancing over the ceiling, this show puts the performers’ talent front and centre. With a stroke of casting genius, this production features a troupe of artists who deliver perfect performances.

Simon Gleeson plays the protagonist Jean Valjean with great depth, taking us on a journey of moral decisions and identity discovery. Gleeson is simply brilliant. One of the many highlights of the show is Gleeson’s delivery of ‘Bring Him Home’ as Valjean pleads with God to spare the life of Marius. Gleeson’s captivating and emotive plea is sung in a gentle quiet voice that moves rapidly to a powerful bellow, and then back again to a subtle whisper. It’s a delicate performance that brought tears to the audience. Patrice Tipoki flawlessly delivers the show’s signature tune ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ as Fantine realises the reality of her life is not going to match the dreams
she held as a young girl. There are few songs in musical theatre that are as epic of this one. Hayden Tee plays Inspector Javert with a large dose of humanity, showing us that his character is not just simply an evil policeman hunting down our hero Valjean, but an honest man trying to do what he thinks is right. One of the great discoveries of this production is Kerrie Anne Greenland. The WAPPA graduate plays Eponine. The extended applause that Greenland received on opening night in Perth was truly well deserved. Greenland singing ‘On My Own’ is a show stopping moment. Trevor Ashley and Lara Mulcahy deliver a mountain of comedy in the show as the devious Inn-Keepers The Tenardiers. The duo don’t miss a single opportunity to give us a laugh and deliver one of the show’s biggest numbers ‘Master of the House’. Euan Doige and Emily Langridge are perfectly matched as Marius and Cosette, giving the show its big romance. Doige has a distinct voice that is a great contrast to the other cast members, is voice is soft and earnest – perfect for this part. Chris Durling rounds out the main cast in the role of student leader Enjolras, mesmerising, fearless and undeniably
handsome, we’d happily follow him into any revolution. Also delivering great performances in the show is a group of young actors taking turns of playing the roles of young Cosette, Eponine and young protester Gavroache. Victor Hugo’s epic tale takes on some big themes, this is a show about honour, redemption, love, freedom, oppression and the classes. It’s a truly epic story and it’s delivered in a suitably epic style. The sets designed by Matt Kinley are impressive as the twist and turn to form a
variety of different buildings and locations, the massive street barricade where the students protest makes a memorable entrance. What really makes this show though is some amazing lighting design by Paule Constable. The whole production looks like it was painted by Rembrandt. The stage is predominately dark and bright shards of light highlight the action. The production has added 150 extra speakers to the auditorium to achieve an impressive surround sound effect. When the barricade is under siege, it sounds like the bullets are actually whizzing past your ears. People who have already seen the show are likely to be queuing up to buy a second round of tickets – so act quickly if you don’t want to miss out. ‘Les Miserables’ is at the Crown Theatre until Sunday March 1st, tickets are available via Ticketek. Another year done and dusted! Bring on 2015! Even when we visited in spring time the landscape was a solid white vista of snow and glaciers. It has served as the planet Hoth in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and today is where they film beyond the wall for ‘Game of Thrones’. As you begin your decent down into the western side of the country you wind through the forests and farmyards again, and have spectacular views of the fjords. It’s stunningly beautiful. Conveniently the train has wi-fi so you can upload pictures from your phone to make all your friends immediately jealous of your travels. Bergen is a beautiful port town, one of the highlights is a series of wooden houses that are hundreds of years old at Bryggen alongside the wharf. These ancient wooden houses painted in autumnal colours all lean slightly to the side, leaning against each other, holding each other up.
Huge mountains drop directly down into the sea, their snow covered caps rapidly melting in the spring sun, creating thousands of dramatic waterfalls plunging from the mountain tops down to sea level. It’s quite an amazing site. A great way to see Norway is to take in two sides of the country. Starting off in Oslo which is one of the world’s great cities. There are great queer bars, several are in close proximity in the city centre allowing a great bar hopping trip. There’s the two story café Ett Glass, the girls bar So, and one of the most popular LGBTIQ spots is the British themed London pub. Head to Oslo in June and you’ll also be able to take in the cities Pride festival. The Oslo Opera House is a sight worth seeing. It’s a huge marble building that’s on the bay and it rises up out of the water like a mountain, you can climb all over it, it’s made up of many differently
angled sides recreating the structure of a small hill. Head down to Aker Brygge, a short walk from the city centre, a walk along a long promenade of cafes and shops. At the end of the promenade you’ll find the Astrup Fearnley Museet, a wonderful modern art gallery that well worth a look around. Leaving Oslo, you can head across the country by train to the port city of Bergen. This eight hour long train trip has been recognized as one of the greatest train journeys in the world and it doesn’t disappoint. You begin by traveling through small country villages, the green landscape dotted with brightly coloured wooden houses. This gives way to views of forests filled with waterfalls before you finally climb to the top of the mountains and enter a winter wonderland.
Driving Lessons
A walk through the town fish markets is also filled with atmosphere. The town has lots of cobbled laneways with lined with hipster stores of recycled furniture, independent music, fashion and curios. One of the biggest challenges on Norway is that food is incredibly expensive, unless you’re taking a stack of cash you’ll find yourself heading to the supermarket to buy some bread and cheese for each meal. Luckily in the centre of Bergen you’ll find the Sostrene Hagelin, a store opened by two sisters in the 1930’s that provides affordable food. Their specialty is fish cakes, which is served as burgers, soups, with gravy and vegetables and in a variety of other presentations. From Bergen sign up for a tour of the Fjords, you can head back into the mountains on the train, transfer to a bus, head across the water on a ferry before travelling back to the city on a train again. Stunning landscapes, picture-perfect postcard views abound and one of the world’s greatest train rides. It’s a wonderful journey.

Since the start of this year, the M Clinic has been flat out busy with guys testing; some coming for their routine test while many guys are coming in for their very first time. But regardless of what test it is or whatever the reason you are coming in for, getting tested for HIV and STI’s is easy enough. For people testing for their first time, it’s not uncommon to feel scared or anxious. The idea of testing might be a bit of an unknown, but once guys come in for their first time, they often see it’s really not that bad. The M Clinic encourages guys to have a look on our website to find out more about testing, or just give us a call with any questions. In 2014, the M Clinic saw the rates of HIV and STI’s such as Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and Syphilis staying steady, but definitely present in the community. Even if you practice safer sex (by wearing condoms), you could still be at risk of picking up syphilis or another sexually transmitted infection through other sexual activities like oral sex. As the M Clinic has been booking up quick, with a current waiting time of about a week, it is important to note that there are many other options of where you can get tested. For more information on testing, go to www.mclinic.org.au or contact the M Clinic on 9227 0734 to make an appointment. Tony Bober M Clinic

Just juice your favourite fruit and pour it into the freezer mold. To make the lemon flavor, combine fresh lemon juice with a dash of sugar syrup and mix through some finely chopped mint leaves. TWISTED BLUES Award winning cabaret performer Wes Snelling is coming to Fringe World and bring his acclaimed show to the west coast. Tell me about your alter-ego Tina Del Twist? She’s an old drunken lush, that’s the best way to describe her, who sings the blues. She’s a very fun character to play. It’s a character that’s developed over time. I get to be the diva that I don’t get to be in everyday life. What do you get to do as an old drunken lush that you don’t normally get to do? Fall asleep in the middle of songs, boss my guitarist around, I guess drink lots of gin, I think the beauty of the character is that the kind of songs she sings are quite bluesy and jazzy and soul and I think the reason the character developed strongly was because I didn’t believe that I’d experienced enough pain to be able to go there as myself. What are some of your favourite songs to perform? There’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’, a few originals which I love to perform, a song called ‘Lest We Forget’, which is a great song. A song called ‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane. That’s a really great song I love doing and ‘Nature Boy’. We do a blues rendition of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ that’s quite fun too. Can you take any song into the blues or is it a special kind of song? Tina can take any song into the blues. In fact she kind of plays with that in the show. Because I think every song has a light and a dark. If it’s a good song, every song can go dark and light. Image Stano Murin
