“I honestly didn’t know the negative and deeply hurtful impact that word has, not only on members of the LGBTIQ community, but on their family and on their friends. And therein lies the problem I reckon - I never bothered to ask.” ‘Today’ host Karl Stefanovic apologises for using transphobic slur on air.

August 2016

When a local Facebook community page changed their name, a conversation began. It is a conversation I have had and heard before, a complex discussion our community has been having for decades now: What is the most appropriate name for our community? The administrators of the local page shortened the “LGBTIQ+” acronym to “LGBT+”. Members were divided on the change, some argued that the changes did not include all members of the community, some said that “queer” was a more fitting general term and some poked fun at how long the acronym had become. When the conversation started, we weren’t really a part of it. We were called homosexuals, homophiles and much worse (and we still are!). When we began to speak up we became the gay community, then the gay and lesbian community. The name continued to evolve and shift for the purpose of more accurately representing those who belonged to our family. From the late 1980’s, the acronym LGBT was coined and was popularised as a friendly, allencompassing term for those who were of diverse gender and sexuality. Since the 1950’s, the discussion has been on the table and throughout the years the community was challenged by disunity, as each individual group within the wider community fought for their own recognition. Echoes of those dissatisfied with the state of community are still heard today. In the last few weeks, women have begun circulating a petition to remove the L from LGBT with concerns that the community is ignoring women’s rights in favour of trans issues. Late last year a similar petition was launched by trans activists to remove the T from the acronym. While most seemed to dismiss these separatist ideas, if members of our community are telling us they are not being heard, shouldn’t we be listening?

The conversation has evolved since a name was first uttered and it seems the sole prerequisite for “most appropriate” name is no longer what is most representative. Some, like actor and activist Lea DeLaria, prefer “queer” as an all encompassing term, while many of those who fought for our contemporary rights still react to the word as a slur. Personally, I am fond of the term. I have always found my heroes are those who let their freak flag fly and celebrate their otherness – a privilege I recognise I owe to those who stood up long before I could crawl. Many argue for the myriad variants of LGBT, LGBTI, LGBTIQ, LGBTTQQIAAP, or the lesser known QUILTBAG or FABGLITTER. Many political and advocacy groups now use the umbrella term ‘diverse gender and sexuality’, which would make for a shorter acronym at least, and there are those who yearn for a label-free existence altogether. While all parties are striving to be representative in one way or another, the longevity of the conversation is testament to how difficult it is to capture the uniqueness and evolving nature of our community, whatever you want to call it. Leigh Hill

inside out

A community by any other name... Over the years, our community has been known by many different names. These monikers have evolved, shifted in meaning, expanded to become more inclusive and proliferated, sparking debate within the community. Leigh Hill shared his observations on the evolution of our nomenclature and asked for your input: What is your preferred identifier for the community? How do you feel about “queer”? Do you want to be labelled at all? Here are some of your responses. Misty said: I’m a fan of “queer”, because there should be no reason for us to outline the specifics of our sexuality / gender if we don’t want to, but pride is so important. I’m mindful that the word can be upsetting for some people though… Collin said: Can I get a like for ‘human’ or ‘person’?

Stevie said: Personally I feel that using the ‘T’ term or even the ‘Transgender’ term is a misrepresentation of people with gender dysphoria. I do understand that a lot of younger diverse people use & relate to these terms, However I know that for my close friends & I who have transitioned we simply wish to be seen as womyn, not diverse womyn or different kinds of womyn. Gender dysphoria is basically a medical issue, there’s no coming out as there is for LGB folk, there’s a diagnosis, medical intervention & hopefully acceptance. Sadly, the transgender umbrella term which encompasses everyone from crossdressers to non-binary people is too general and not helpful. Gaining acceptance and understanding is paramount for people with gender dysphoria.

Michael Kirby Lecture at Curtin In the wake of the Orlando massacre of 50 LGBTIQ people in June 2016, Michael Kirby will examine the important and crucial role that universities play in supporting research to end homophobia (and all forms of LGBTIQ phobia). He will refer to Dr Alfred Kinsey’s research, which helped to revolutionise our conceptions of human sexuality. Michael Kirby will argue that Kinsey’s research was a powerful change-agent. “At the fault line of ideas competing for human acceptance in the present age, Dr Kinsey stands, beckoning us forward to greater rationality and knowledge about ourselves.”

Curtin LGBTIQ Collaborative Research Network Launch Following Michael Kirby’s lecture, a panel of 6 Curtin LGBTIQ researchers will showcase their current research projects. This will include senior and early career researchers as well as PhD and Masters Researchers. Michael Kirby will respond to the presentations with his thoughts on the various projects. Family’s plea for help Fielding was last seen in East Perth on Friday 14th August 2015 and has not made contact with family or friends since. His disappearance has been described as out of character.

“With it nearly a year since he went missing and with no evidence to go on, it all feels a bit hopeless that we will ever know what happened.” Stephanie Fielding told OUTinPerth.

Fielding was last seen when he visited a house in Goderich Street East Perth in the early afternoon of August 14th 2015. Police believe Mr Fielding may have been wearing washed out jeans and a grey jumper.

The first week of August is National Missing Person’s week. More than one hundred Australians are reported missing every day, and while most are found quickly, many remain missing long term.

The 53 year old retired chef was living with his sister and mother in Rockingham but regularly spent time with friends in the city area.

Research shows at least 12 people are directly impacted when someone goes missing – emotionally, psychologically, financially – almost half a million Australians every year.

Police have been treating his disappearance as a potential homicide since December last year. Fielding’s sister Stephanie has renewed the call for people to come forward if they have any information about her brother’s disappearance.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“Someone knows what happened to Rig and we are pleading with them to come forward so that we can have closure and say goodbye to him.

Kruger: Scholarships for LGBT students is reverse discrimination TV host Sonia Kruger has criticised a leading provider of educational scholarships for offering specific assistance to LGBTI students. “It feels like reverse discrimination to me.” Kruger told Karl Stefanovic on the ‘Today’ program. “To ask a student if they identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, you’re asking somebody about their sexual preferences and I find that that is a really odd thing to do.” Kruger said. Kruger said people should not be asked about their sexuality in any capacity, and it should have nothing to do with the awarding of educational scholarships. Kruger said that while she appreciated transgender people were a minority who suffered, the same did not apply for people because of their sexuality. Kruger’s co-host David Campbell said he disagreed with Kruger and described the scholarship from the Australian Business and Community Network as “not a big deal”. It’s not the first time debates on the program have drawn attention for the hosts opinions, two weeks ago Kruger was criticised for her comments about banning Muslims from immigrating to Australia. In July, host Karl Stefanovic labeled himself “a complete tool” after he used a transphobic slur during an interview with the show’s crew covering the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The discussion on the TODAY show was sparked by an article in The Australian newspaper which highlighted that the Australian Business Community Network had included a question about students gender identity and sexuality on their application form. The Australian said the inclusion of the questions had launched “fresh concerns about the creeping influence of LGBTI rights activism on schools.” In 2016, the organisation which is backed by major business including the Commonwealth Bank, Citi, Fuji Xerox and many others, is offering a specific grant for LGBTIQ+ students in Year 10 of their secondary education. The offering of a $7000 scholarship, which is dispersed over a three year period, has been criticised by conservative organisation Family Voice Australia. Damian Wyld, national policy officer for Family Voice Australia, told The Australian that the awarding of education scholarships based on sexuality as another example of ideological activism making its way into schools. “Why should children, especially in a school setting, be asked to declare their sexuality or gender identity?” Wyld said. Wyld said the scholarship was a financial incentive that encouraged students to identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex or transgender. “Many 15-year-olds are still working through issues around sexuality. Offering a financial incentive to identify as ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and/or intersex’ is completely inappropriate.”

QLife win LiFE Award Australia’s national counselling service for LGBTI people QLife has been honoured with a LiFE Award for excellence in suicide prevention. QLife is a partnership between Diverse Voices in Queensland, Switchboard VIC, Twenty10 NSW, The National LGBTI Health Alliance and Living Proud here in WA. The volunteer-run organisation offers connection, recognition and peer-to-peer support for queer people struggling with mental health and personal issues 365 days a year. QLife National Project Manager Stella Topaz says she and the other 300+ volunteers are thrilled to have their work affirmed. “We know that the difference we make to the health and wellbeing of the people who contact us is immediate: they dial the number or message our webchat, and right away there is a connection and recognition from someone with lived experiences similar to theirs,” Topaz said. National LGBTI Health Alliance Chair Susan Ditter says the organisations that comprise QLife have been working tirelessly since long before they came together on the national project. “Coming together… we have been able to respond effectively to a dramatic increase in demand across Australia,” Ditter said. “I recognise and thank those people who give so much as QLife volunteers and partner organisations to providing such a valued grassroots service.” If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, support and counseling are available from QLife at (free call) 1800 184 527 and www.qlife.org.au

TANZANIA

Health Minister bans lube Tanzania’s health minister Ummy Mwalimu has declared personal lubricants are banned in the African Nation. The health minister claims that lubricants allow men to have sex with each other and has declared that the money spent on lubricants in the country’s health budget will now go to creating more beds for the maternity wards. ‘It is true that the government has banned the importation and use of the jelly to curb the spread of HIV,” Mwalimu told local media in July. It is estimated that 23% of men who have sex with men in the African Nation are HIV positive. The health ministers decision to stop access to lubrication is likely to have a backwards effect on stopping the rise of new HIV infections as anal sex without lubrication is more likely to lead to situations where people can become infected with the virus. Homosexuality is illegal in Tanzania and gay people face a life long prison sentence if convicted. The health ministers ban on the importation of lubricant follows a crackdown on LGBT people in the nations capital Dar es Salaam. The newly appointed regional commissioner for the port city, Paul Makonda, announced a major crackdown against gay people this month, followed by arrests of suspected gays in clubs. The police have also indicated they will use social media to track down LGBT people.

USA (CALIFORNIA)

California schools to teach LGBTIQ+ history California’s State Board of Education has unanimously passed changes to their curriculum to include LGBTIQ+ history in public schools in accordance with state law. The law, passed five years ago, ensured people with disabilities and queer Americans were listed as groups whose contributions to society must be taught and printed in textbooks for students from kindergarten to eighth grade.

After years of attempts to overturn the law and crippling budget cuts, the law finally saw implementation this year since coming into effect in 2012. Conservative opponents to the changes wanted parents to retain the right to decide whether or not their children attend sexual education classes – however the bill was passed, with a clause prohibiting materials that discriminate against religions or LGBTIQ people. The newly approved amendments to the curriculum will see history and social sciences classes teach students about diverse families in the second grade and the LGBTIQ+ history of California in their fourth year. Secondary students will also learn about gender expression throughout history, with a focus on the 18th and 19th centuries. Though the education board voted unanimously for the changes, opponents to the law persist in their protest arguing that greater names of history will lose essential classroom time to less notable LGBTIQ figures. Western Australian State Liberal MLA Peter Abetz posted his concern about the news out of California. The member for Southern River posted on Facebook that “the relentless push to normalise the LGBTI agenda knows no bounds. “Now school children in California have to be taught how to have safe homosexual sex,” Abetz wrote. “Once you legalise same sex marriage, it is the inevitable next step.” Eleventh grade graduate Allyson Chiu told ABC News that the amendments would make queer kids more comfortable. “My classmates can solve quadratic equations or cite the elements on the periodic table. They can’t tell you who Harvey Milk was or the significance of the Stonewall Riots,” Chiu said.

Sixteen year old Ash Whitaker from Wisconsin USA made headlines earlier this year when he successfully lobbied his school to run for Prom King. Initially the school has insisted Whitaker should run for the category of Prom Queen because he was born as a female. After Whitaker presented his school with a petition filled with 6000 signatures, the school district announced it would now allow students to enter the Prom King and Queen ballot under the gender of their choice. At the time Whitaker highlighted that his other challenge was a new school policy which insisted students use the bathroom of their birth gender. The school had insisted that the 16 year old use single stall gender neutral bathroom in the office, or the girls restroom on campus. Now the teenager has launched a lawsuit against his school over bathroom use and a series of other alleged civil rights violations. Aided by the Transgender Law Center and Relman, Dane & Colfax PLLC, a civil rights firm based in Washington, D.C the student has highlighted his challenges in bathroom use, daily surveillance by school staff and the threats he has allegedly received from school officials. Among the items listed in the legal documents is a claim that guidance counselors at the school were instructed to issue Whitaker and other transgender students with bright green arm bands so school staff could easily identify them as transgender. Whitaker has also complained about staff members repetitively using his birth name and addressing him as the opposite gender. The school is also alleged to have failed to tell substitute teachers about students transgender status. The school is also alleged to have instructed teachers to closely monitor transgender students to make sure they didn’t use the bathrooms of their choice. The School District has responded to the legal action and counterclaimed that many of the allegations are patently false. “The District does not have a practice or policy requiring any student to wear a wristband for monitoring any purpose or for any reason whatsoever. The District has worked diligently with transgendered students and their families to address their unique needs and accommodations, including the family named in the suit.” the School District said in a statement.

‘Fashion Police’ panelist and comedy superstar Margaret Cho is bringing her Psycho tour to the Astor Theatre this September. We caught up with the outspoken comic about trying to celebrate Pride in the wake of Orlando, her take on the US Presidential election and her new album. Calling from her LA home as Pride celebrations wrapped up around the country, Cho tells us there was a cloud over the parades in the wake of the tragic events at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. “I was really upset about what happened in Orlando which unfortunately happened to coincide with Los Angeles Pride. I found it really hard, I was depressed for a long time. I’m still upset about it and I’m still furious about it.” “In Australia you have a generation that has grown up with no concept of the gun violence that happens in this country every single day. Although Pride celebrations are very important to the community, it’s very hard to go out and enjoy your pride after something like that happens.” “The spirit of it was just so depressing because Orlando was such a majorly horrifying tragedy. I always think of gay clubs as being a safe place that you’re free from a lot of the male aggression that we endure - even if it’s not guns - in life. Free from judgement, free from homophobia. To have it at a place where people were experiencing this sanctuary for the first time is really upsetting and it’s all because some guy couldn’t get dick on Grindr.” Community outrage in the wake of Orlando has seen many turn to politics in the hopes of enacting change, though Cho is apprehensive about the state of US Politics with particular concerns about the Republican candidate. “I don’t really know what’s happening with the election here, I am a fan of both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton and worked for both campaigns, the whole thing is a very strange environment for politics.” Cho says she finds it hard to believe that gay conservative political writer Milo Yiannopoulos and other LGBTIQ people would align themselves with Donald Trump and hoped to offer ‘Gays for Trump’ some advice.

making music, trying her hand at composition on her latest album ‘American Myth’. “Music is a very big part of my life. I have a very large collection of guitars and I’m close with amazing artists like Tegan and Sara, Andrew Bird, Fiona Apple and Amanda Palmer. I’m lucky that’s a community I’m very close to, maybe even closer than comedy. I’ve always gotten along well with musicians.” Cho says she will perform some of her favourite tunes on stage on the Psycho Tour, flexing her musical and comedic muscles. “I’ll do a couple of songs from the record. One is ‘Fat Pussy’ which is an anthem for me. I really enjoy that song’s positivity and then ‘I Wanna Kill My Rapist’ which is also a very big part of the show talking about sexual abuse and how you feel from it by just trying to find some way of processing it.” Audiences can expect to hear songs from Cho’s albums, but Margaret says the comedy is best when it’s fresh from the news and caters to local audiences. “It’s constantly developing, I’ll have to wait until I get into Australia to see that. The show changes day to day depending on the news cycle and what’s going on so there’s always this mutable element to it. I try to tailor it to every place I go so it makes it very local, that’s important to me.” “We will talk about racism, sexism and homophobia in very real ways and about how we deal with that in the world and but there’s always comedy - even if you’re talking about whitewashing in American cinema and beyond - I always try to find that balance.” Margaret Cho’s Psycho Tour will be at Astor Theatre, Tuesday September 6th. Tickets available from Moshtix.com.au Leigh Hill

Julian Clary is proud to use the word ‘mince’, and reacts strongly when we suggest it might be word that is triggering for some. “Oh! I’ve never heard that reaction before.” Clary proclaims, “It’s an old fashion word isn’t it”.

“I return to being that introverted seven year old and make up stories like I would have made up for myself then anyway. I think as a comedian your inner child is fairly well developed.”

The British comedian, whose new stand up show is titled ‘The Joy Of Mincing’ agrees that mincing is something that gay men used to be accused of.

Clary said he always remembers that children’s books are written for children but they are also read by adults, who are reading to their children. The comedian admitted he sometimes put in jokes that were also for the parents.

“That’s why I wanted it to be a ‘Joy of Mincing’, I’ve always liked that word and I’ve used it fact from the day dot. My first tour was ‘Mincing Machine’ then I did ‘Natural Born Mincer’, ‘Lord of the Mince’, ‘The Joy of Mincing’. Clary said he’s on a mission to reframe the word. “For me it’s more than a silly walk, it’s a kind of a declaration in a joy of one’s self in the face of disapproval.” Clary said it’s a “funny business” to the observation as society becomes more accepting of gay people there appears to be less acceptance of campiness. “I think campiness will always be with us, I think certain gay men disapprove of campiness because they want everyone to have beards and wear gingham shirts.” Clary said.

So far Clary’s published two books and he’s just finished writing a third. The publishing company loves his work so much they’ve already ordered two more. Fifteen years ago Clary moved to the English countryside purchasing Goldenhurst, a rundown manor house in one of the Home Counties. The house was previously owned by English writer Noel Coward, Clary admits it was his love of Coward that sparked his interest in the property. “The house was calling out to me to me to be rescued because it was in a very dilapidated state. That’s what got me through the door, the fact that it was Coward’s house, I thought ‘how interesting!’” Clary said. The comedian said since he moved in he’s learned a lot about the house’s history which reaches back to the 15th Century. Restoring the house and its gardens took Clary and his partner the better part of a decade. Clary’s currently filming a documentary about Coward and recently visited the author’s grave at The Firefly Estate in Jamaica. “It a wonderful experience to be living in his house in Kent and then to go visit the house where he was living when he died in Jamaica. “It’s such an amazing spot where he is – it’s very theatrical. I took some rose petals from the garden at Goldenhurst and took them to his grave and scattered them on his grave in Jamaica. I thought he might like that, from one home to another.”

I KIND OF THINK IN INNUENDOS ALL DAY

“I think campiness is almost a genetic thing, also as we get older as we get older it’s a way of coping with life, we’re all just trying to cope with life –so whatever gets you through the day.” Clary said.

Clary said Coward’s work has great longevity.

The comedian said he loves playing with language and relishes his reputation for being able to quickly pick up on interesting phrases; “I kind of think in innuendos all day long, just for my own amusement.”

In recent years the comedian has also been an outspoken advocate for marriage equality. During the British campaign for changing the laws Clary proclaimed that ‘marriage equality would not make society disintegrate.’

Clary said he’s always been camp, describing himself as a very camp five year old. Clary described himself as a curious child who was bookish and quite insular.

“Gay marriage is about the equality of relationships and how they are perceived in law and it has a trickledown effect on culture and society. What people fear is that you’re going to spend months and years now discussing if society is going to disintegrate if gay and lesbian marriage becomes law.

“I had quite a hard time at school because of my effeminacy, in one way it’s a surprise that I wanted to grow up and stand on stage in front of a lot of people, but actually I think the psychological explanation is that I need to be liked, I need to reassurance of a laugh every few seconds.“

“Of course it doesn’t, all it means is people have a right to be happy. It doesn’t mean everyone has to marry a same sex partner. I’m sorry you have to go through all this – it’s going to be such a bore.” Clary said.

Recently Clary’s authored a series of children’s books. ‘The Bolds’ series featuring illustrations from David Roberts tells the story of a family of hyenas who live in Suburbia disguised as a regular family. He describes his writing process as beginning with the process of regressing to childhood.

“It’s not just his writing, he was very prolific in all kid of areas. There’s his songs of course, but there’s also his poetry which is often overlooked, which I think it’s rather lovely and a different perception of him through that.” Clary said. The comedian also owns several of Coward’s paintings.

Clary said Australia’s failure to embrace marriage equality was now embarrassing. “We think of Australia as such a liberal place, you would have thought you’d be first in the queue for gay marriage.” Clary said.

Julian Clary ‘The Joy of Mincing’ is the Astor Theatre on Monday 12 September, tickets are available from Ticketmaster. Want to hear our whole conversation with Julian Clary? Head to outinperth.com and search for Julian Clary ‘On The Line’ and listen to our whole chat. Graeme Watson

A new social group for lesbians over the age of 55 is being formed here in Perth, following the success of the Lesbian Open House collective in Melbourne. Don’t want to head out to bars and nightclubs to socialise? This group is all about getting together in a comfortable space and having a conversation.

Stretch out those thinking muscles, The Society of Women Writers WA is hosting another Marathon Writing Competition this September inviting all genders to challenge their creativity.

The group will meet for a one-hour discussion on any topic, even something as innocuous as mobile phone etiquette - whatever the group nominates. Women are invited to come and participate, or just listen and enjoy the company.

Award-winning authoer and poet and President of SWWWA says people are amazed at how much they can produce at these marathons. “Don’t worry about grammar, punctuation or spelling, but let the words flow and fall as they may,” Iles says.

The Lesbian Open House group ran for 35 years in Melbourne, and local organisers hope to emulate that success with a new friendly social group for older women with support from GLBTI Rights in Ageing.

“The object of the marathon is not to create perfect pieces of writing on the day, but to produce first drafts, to unearth fresh new material and generate ideas for future writing projects.” The marathon will consist of ten challenges in 25 minute rounds, with prizes for the top three contestants of the day. Tea, coffee and notepaper is provided, so bring your trustiest pen.

If you are interested in participating in Meet N Muse, email Pam at pam_mulholland@aapt.net.au

The Marathon Writing Competition will be held in the Citiplace Community Centre at Perth Railway Station on Saturday 17th September, 9:30am - 4pm. To enter, call 0415 840 031 or email swwofwa@gmail.com

Pop!

Nothing but bright, bubbly, sugar coated pop tunes at this popular mid-week get together hosted by our very own Barbie Q. Drag shows at 1am, or even try your own wig on the stage for Dragathon!

At the age of 33, Shannon Garner was happily married and living on the north coast of New South Wales, 6 hours from Sydney. She had natural water births for her two children – Jaxon (4) and Kiera (2) and she decided to become a gestational surrogate to “help someone else realise a dream they might not otherwise have the chance to fulfil.” Sydney couple Jon and Justin had been together for 8 years they had a friend who heard of Shannon’s desire to be a surrogate. They also had a friend who was willing to donate her eggs and the four of them embarked on a year that would change their lives and the lives of everyone they cared for forever. Shannon writes an extremely detailed account of the journey of that year, from the initial discussions to a happy reunion 7 weeks after baby Elsie is born. She obviously has a strong spiritual connection and utilised acupuncture to help with the success of the IVF and yoga during her pregnancy. She also communicated to “her passenger” all the time and encouraged her to do the right thing so she could have a natural birth. Her incredibly positive outlook didn’t prevent difficulties from occurring along the way and she shares her doubts and insecurities with great honesty. It was a time when Thailand’s Baby Gammy was all over the media and there were considerable discussions about the ethics and difficulties of surrogacy.

GRIND Under Australian law, a surrogate mother cannot accept payment but they can change their mind and keep the baby, even if it comes from a donor egg. Current laws vary from state to state and record numbers of childless Australian couples currently go overseas to pay a surrogate. Calling her experience a “collective love”, Shannon had the support of a whole network of people and she has several friends who are pregnant at the same time, including some who are also surrogate mothers.

Shannon considers that she is just an ordinary person who undertook and extraordinary journey. Shannon had the absolute support of her family and they need to be admired for their altruistic belief that along with Shannon, they were “compensated by love and the knowledge that they’ve changed a couple’s lives for the better.” Lezly Herbert

LET’S GET ECOSEXUAL Loren Kronemyer and Ian Sinclair collaborate as Pony Express and their ‘Ecosexual Bathhouse’ set tongues wagging in Melbourne following their recent exhibition as part of the Next Wave Festival.

Now their bringing a section of this work to Radical Ecologies, the PICA Salon. ‘Ecosexual Sauna’ is an immersive work focusing on the emerging sexual identity in which the biosphere itself is taken as a lover. The sauna is home to the transcribed stories of self-identified ecosexuals, gathered by Pony Express during interviews conducted over a series of workshops. These stories have been recorded and interpreted as whispers through the walls, sharing the experience of ecosexuality in a framework modeled off the clandestine communities of gay saunas over the last five decades. Chatting to OUTinPerth Sinclair, who has come from an experimental theatre background, said he was enjoying the collaboration with Kronmeyer who was a different kind of artist. “Loren’s a visual artist who works between science and installation and she works across multiple disciplines. We met at the Proximity Festival and started talking about the future, and the environment, and things like sexual identity. We had similar thoughts but different perspectives, so we asked ourselves ‘Why don’t we work together?’” Sinclair explained. Sinclair said two artist working together is a little like a new romantic relationship. “There’s the honeymoon period, and then that time when you keep going ‘wait a minute, are we on the same page about this?’ then eventually you settle into a rhythm together.” Sinclair said. “We really enjoy working together, but we work in very different ways”. Sinclair describes the pairs work as a combination of art, activism, and sex, noting that he finds the idea of plant based sexuality intriguing. “When you think about it sex is all around us, plants and pollen are happening everywhere and we’re a part of these processes that are happening all around us, we’re just not aware of them.”

“They’re secret and sacred spaces, and part of this work is creating a safe space for every secret little ecological desire, there’s a light and a dark side to that too.” Sinclair said the show got a lot of “wacky media” coverage after its launch, but it paid off with lots of mainstream audiences visiting the work and experiencing something they might not have usually attended. “The space ended up being more contemplative and meditative than I expected. You can move through the different spaces and you get a special piece of equipment that helps you through the space with a UV light. There’s a lot of discovery.” Sinclair said. “A lot of people came in thinking ‘what is this sex with plants place’, but came out the other end quite relaxed.” For all the details about the PICA Salon: Radical Ecologies head to www.pica.org.au

Throughout the Radiothon week you’ll be hearing stories of people’s live who have been affected by RTRFM,” Holyoake said. “We personally think the station is of incredible importance, particularly to the queer community to be able to get our voice across without having commercial influence.” Holyoake says the show will be filled with music from queer artists and a whole lot of fun.

This year, RTRFM is asking you to come to the party - so will you accept the invitation? Radiothon’s annual multi-venue party is taking over Northbridge once again to support the community station. Catch local bands French Rockets, Doctopus, Mt. Mountain and Rabbit Island, DJ Karl Halliday, Willy Slade v Hame, Barefaced Stories and a fistful of other local talent at locations across Northbridge.

“It’ll be a morning party!” The event asks listeners to subscribe to the station each year during Radiothon to support the long-standing community based broadcaster that caters to niche audiences across Perth including the LGBTIQ+ community. “The theme of Radiothon in 2016 is Come To The Party so we’re looking at it two-fold. Come to the party and subscribe to the station to keep it alive and also to come to the party literally and enjoy all the events,” Tati said. Tati and Kenny are looking forward to their first Radiothon broadcast along with Roscoe, regular presenter Graham Douglas-Meyer and Dure Khan. The team will be joined by a cast of special guests throughout the morning. Tune in to All Things Queer, 11am Mondays on RTRFM 92.1. Radiothon will be taking over the station August 12 to 21. Don’t miss the Radiothon Party at venues across Northbridge Saturday August 13th.

Lap up the party at The Bird and Ezra Pound, or head across the road to the State Theatre Centre and Studio Underground to mix up the vibe. What easier way to get out and support our friends at RTRFM than with an all-night rager with the best in local talent and a whole bunch of friendly music lovers. Radiothon’s 2016 Party will be held on Saturday August 13 from 7pm at four venues on both sides of William St. For more information, visit RTRFM.com.au

San Francisco punk band Pansy Division are celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2017 and will have a new album out later in the year. The queercore band’s ninth offering ‘Quite Contrary’ will be out in September. The record will feature songs including ‘Blame the Bible’, ‘(Is This What It’s Like) Getting Old’ and the first single ‘He’s Trouble’. The band also have one cover on the album, their take on the Pet Shop Boys classic ‘It’s a Sin’. Pansy Division formed in 1991 and are remembered for their underground hits and provocatively titled tunes like ‘He Whipped My Ass in Tennis (Then I Fucked His Ass in Bed)’, ‘Reciprocate’

and ‘Fem in a Black Leather Jacket’, Today the band is made up of founding members Jon Ginoli and Chris Freeman, while drummer Luis Illades joined in 1996 and guitarist/vocalist Joel Reader joined the group in 2004. Reader’s the odd one out in the queer band, he’s straight. “Joel is not gay, so the band is three-quarters gay,” Ginoli told the Chicago Tribune earlier this year. “One of the goals from the beginning was to have an all-gay band and we did have that at several points. But now having an ally in the band seems just as good to us.” ‘Quite Contrary’ will be out in September. Image: Martin Meyers

THE END i don’t believe in god but i believe in poetry: our voices rising up a tidal wave of politics and fear still as the sand, we wait holding each other together like tape on a shipwreck and with the explosion of panic still ringing in our ears we pray. we pray for the woman with poetry written in the lines of her face we pray for the ghosts of poems abandoned and the ghosts of whoever we used to be. we pray for the empty night sky and to all the gods who turned their backs on us. we pray for ourselves because the universe is expanding in the same way the distance between us is always god wrote a poem for us to bring us back to life and it appeared in the sky as a sunbeam but we couldn’t read it it fell on our faces as rain but we

couldn’t hear it it came to us as a flower but we overlooked it so we wrote it ourselves. god tore the sky in half and told us we were kidding ourselves he told us it was an echo that would die in time old light that would never make it halfway across the galaxy but we knew better. we sang it a thousand times until the moon knew our names and it was writ in the stars and the sun whispered it in summer and cried it in winter and it lives on in the throats of forgotten people we never needed a miracle: we rise from the wreckage like we always do anxiety dust and ocd shrapnel pulling shards of depression from our skin like glass we whisper final lines of that forsaken poem it spills from freezing lips like hourglass sand and then it hits Luka Buchanan

Matilda – The Musical

Long before she was selected as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States, Hillary Clinton was the First Lady - and Bill was in the Oval Office. Black Swan State Theatre Company and Perth Theatre Trust are bringing the musical story of the what may become known as the first Clinton Presidency to WA ahead of the 2016 US election showdown. ‘Clinton: The Musical’ tells the tale of one of America’s most influential and divisive presidents. William Jefferson Clinton is a man with dual identities: one charismatic, educated and popular and one notoriously reckless and unprofessional. Two actors play both faces of Mr Clinton as he and his wife Hillary traverse his lengthy career together.

Simon Burke will embody WJ, Bill’s more wholesome persona while Matt Dyktynski will embody Billy, the raucous rogue that incited the infamous scandal that catapulted one Monica Lewinski (Megan Kozak) into the headlines. Republican heavyweight Newt Gingrich and the late Eleanor Roosevelt also make appearances in this political symphony. Before America votes in 2016, take a musical trip down memory lane. Clinton: The Musical runs from 27th August - 11th September at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Tickets available from ticketek.com.au or call 1300 795 012. Photographer - Robert Frith

Lauchlan Edward Bain is undertaking a massive challenge, choreographing an upcoming production of the musical ‘Oliver!’, while local performer Dean Misdale is taking on the role of Mister Bumble in the show. We caught up with the pair during a break in there rehearsal schedule.. When did you first see the musical ‘Oliver’?

What’s it like becoming Mister Bumble?

Lauchlan: I remember when I was a kid it was a movie that my parents introduced me to. I grew up watching those old Hollywood movies like ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’. I just remember falling in love with the Dickensian atmosphere.

It’s been a challenge because it’s so different to anything I’ve ever done. It’s the biggest role I’ve ever undertaken in a musical theatre setting.

Dean: Six months ago, I had to watch the movie to prepare for the audition and then I watched few stage versions on YouTube. I was familiar with the show and the iconic songs and lines, but I’d never actually seen it. Cast wise - it’s a big musical with lots of people and lots of big musical numbers, is that challenging? Lauchlan: Compared to contemporary musicals, where spectacle is the show and that need that extraordinary amount of presentation to hold an audience this is quite different. It really comes down to the writing, that’s what makes it so lasting. It’s a musical where you’re humming to songs as you’re walking in to the show.

Finding him has been difficult because he’s ‘both sides of the coin’. When he’s with the kids he’s quite the controlling authoritarian figure, but when he’s with Widow Corney he’s a big blubbering mess who just wants to get into bed with her, and you see this other side of him. I’ve done a lot of work with my vocal coach since I got the role, because you’re singing in an accent, your singing in character plus ‘Boy for Sale’ it’s a really difficult song and a beautiful piece of music, so you want to do it justice. How do you go about ensuring this version of ‘Oliver!’ is a fresh take on the musical? Lauchlan: The company, ICW Productions are known for doing the classics but they’re always putting their own

twist on a production. When we did ‘Cats’ back in 2013 rather than doing the shag-pile rug version, as it was so affectionately called, we set it in this gorgeous 1930’s ballroom. Dean: Both the Musical Director and the Director have been encouraging telling us “make it your own”, ‘You don’t have to sing it the way you think it needs to be sung, strip it back and recreate it.” What number do you love in the show? Lauchlan: I love every scene involving the actress we have play Nancy, Phoebe Dean is just so good. In rehearsal watching her bring the character to life has been so exciting. ‘Oliver!’ will be performed at The Joy Shepherd Performing Arts Centre, St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, Mosman Park from 20 August for 7 performances. New Zealand born Jess Cornelius fronts Melbourne band Teeth and Tongue. When it came to time to work on the bands upcoming fourth album the songwriter signed up to an opportunity that took her to the other side of the globe. The songwriter signed up for an artistic residency program in Northern Iceland. Surrounded by snow and volcanic landscapes Cornelius began work on her next album, but she tells us prior to this she’d had no burning desire to travel to the far flung country. “I’d never been, and funnily enough I’d didn’t have a real desire to go to Iceland. I didn’t go for the destination, I went because I wanted to do an artist’s residency. I’d never done one before, I thought it sounded slightly torturous, but appealing to be isolated and to be so focused on just writing.” “I actually wanted to go to Turkey or somewhere warm, but I found this residency in this town in Northern Iceland where four hundred people live. The photos looked amazing and I thought ‘If I want to be away from people, this is probably a good place to be’.” Cornelius shared. Cornelius said been based in the remote town did change the way she wrote. The barren Icelandic landscape didn’t come to feature in her songs, but it did affect her emotionally.

“This album isn’t as self-indulgent as it could have been. I’m glad we discarded some of the songs. I didn’t want to make an album that was just microscopic kind of analytical self-reflective record. That’s not where I wanted to be. “I was conscious of how I was affected by my surroundings, but I guess I’m not a writer who sings about the mountains, but for me it became a little more internal. Cornelius said she loved doing the residency and would certainly go through the process again in the future. “I loved the process. It’s interested what happens when all you have to do is write.” Cornelius said. While much of the writing she completed in Iceland was declared too self-indulgent to be recorded, one song did make it onto the band’s new record. Once back in Australia Cornelius re-teamed with the rest of the band and put together a new album that has a distinctively overt electronic sound. ‘Give Up on Your Health’ open with the title track and works its way through eleven great tracks where interesting lyrics and intriguing sounds are perfectly matched. Lead single ‘Dianne’ with its pulsing beats has already been well loved on indie radio stations and the albums sure to be a hit with the bands fans. ‘Give Up on Your Health’ will be released in September.

“I did get lonely, a little bit crazy, as everyone said I would. So it did effect how I wrote. Everyone who goes there has a moment where they think ‘what am I doing, I want to get out of here’. It did make me write some very strange songs that I didn’t want to use later.

Speaking to E-Online Cox said she realised that people consider it to be a sacred work. “People can be very… challenging and critical, but I put everything I had into this.” Cox said. “I gave 250 percent, and I hope people like what we came up with.” The new version of the show wil lair in the USA at Halloween.

Les Poupees de Paris Sid and Marty Kroffts

If you remember the Banana Splits Television series then you will know about Sid and Marty Kroffts the puppeteers behind the show. What you might not know is that in 1962 they produced a lavish puppet show that managed to upset one Rev. Billy Graham when he saw it at the World Fair in New York. Masterworks Broadway have just released the soundtrack on CD and digital download. Featuring the voices of Pearl Bailey, Milton Berle, Cyd Charisse, Annie Fargé, Gene Kelly, Liberace, Jayne Mansfield, Tony Martin, Phil Silvers, Loretta Young and Edie Adams, the score features music and lyrics by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen. It is a very camp collection of show tunes and comedic songs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the numbers appear in drag performances here in Perth. Worth listening out for.

Teen Wolf to end with 100th episode It’s all over for the TV series ‘Teen Wolf’. Show runner Jeff Davis recently told a crowd of fans at Comic-Con in San Diego that the sixth season will be shows final outing. The show was recently had significantly lower audiences than when it was at the height of its popularity. The final episode of the sixth season will be the 100th episode of the show.

Discover a unique Jazz Dining Experience... First Friday Night of Every Month Feature Artist:

Masina Miller, Jazz Singer

The show television show about people watching television shows returns for its fourth season this month. We jumped on the couch with Gogglebox Australia stars Tom and Wayne. Did you have any hesitation at signing up to be a Goggleboxer? Tom: Not now we don’t. On the first season I woke up and I admit thought ‘what have we done? No one is going to watch this program!’ Wayne: For me, I didn’t think the show would make it past season one but it‘s turned into a firestorm overnight. Do you ever spend time with the other families on Gogglebox, or have you never met? Wayne: No, not at all, they keep us completely separate. I think it keeps the show as real as possible, if we met each other it wouldn’t be as real. Why is Wayne always hugging a cushion? Wayne: I don’t know, I think it’s a security blanket, something to hold onto. Tom: He uses it as a stable table to rest his drinks on my good pillows. What is Tom usually drinking? Wayne: Anything alcoholic Tom: I like a cocktail. So anything that comes with an umbrella. I hate beer and wine. How do you feel about being recognised in the street? Do you have fans now, do you have to wear dark glasses when you go out? Tom: We get recognised everywhere we go. It’s been good, we’ve only had one or two weird encounters. We had one girl that wouldn’t let go of Wayne’s arm. That was a little strange.

Wayne: Because we don’t see ourselves as famous we forget. We’ll be sitting at breakfast and see people waving at us and think, who’s that person waving at?

Masina Miller is an emotive vocalist, bringing the class and elegance from a bygone Era. Her passion, sound and presence will make for a memorable evening at Chapels on Whatley. Masina has fronted bands globally and extensively in the Eastern States, performing for known celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Eddie Mcquire and James Packer just to name a few.

Have you watched the UK version of the show? Tom: Yeah on YouTube, I want to be the new Steph and Dom. Wayne: The two drunk ones. Who is hotter: Symon or Adam? Wayne: I’m a sucker for a ranga. Tom: I’d go for Symon, but I’d like to cut his hair. What TV show do you never want to watch again? Tom: Cooking shows. All cooking shows need to be banned in this country. Wayne: All those shows like ‘The Voice’ and ‘X Factor’ are doing my head in.

Eurasian Cuisine - Fully Licenced - Live Music every Friday night in January

Tom: Oh and that ‘Kiss Love Bang’, actually get rid of reality. Except ‘Housewives’. Being the Ninth Housewife of Melbourne is my dream. Which TV show should be re-made? What should be brought back to our screens? Tom: ‘Glee!’ We should have 52 weeks of ‘Glee’. Wayne: I don’t know, all of my favourite shows are still going. Do you think the Goggleboxers will ever have to watch Gogglebox? Tom: Oh god I hope not! I hate watching myself. I don’t believe my voice is that high!

Jason Bourne

(m)

Directed by Paul Greengrass

Not sure what former CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has been doing in the last nine years, but he doesn’t seem to have changed much. We find him on the Greek/ Albanian border, all buffed up and competing in bare knuckle fighting. Fully recovered from his amnesia, onetime CIA contact Nicky (Julia Stiles) encourages him to find out about his family’s past. There is no time to sip martinis or have amorous entanglements as Bourne focuses on revenge. There is edge-of-yourseat action as the body count rises. A trail of destruction circles the world and Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel hunt him down. Tackling modern issues of digital privacy, it’s time for the old guard to move over and Gen Y Heather Lane (Alicia Vikander) to take over. There’s enough adrenaline for Bourne to continue the franchise … but what exactly is he chasing?

Her husband, Gene (Gabriel Byrne) and two sons need to sort through her last lot of photographs for the exhibition but they are all too preoccupied with their own fractured lives. Gene is struggling to connect with his youngest son Conrad (Devin Druid), a withdrawn teenager, and eldest son Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg) seems reluctant to face the new development in his life. Norwegian director Joachim Trier throws together poignant war photographs with violent video games, voiceovers and personal narrations with dreams and flashbacks. Everyone has differing memories of Isabelle and even though she is already dead at the beginning of the film, Isabelle overshadows all their lives. The film is a kaleidoscope that takes the audience into the minds of all its characters as they try to move on.

Directed by Tom Tykwer

Twenty-four years after Absolutely Fabulous began its 20 year television life, the film has hit the big screen. It is written by Jennifer Saunders who is one of the narcissistic pair of party girls, Edina “Eddy” Monsoon, and has about 60 Cameo appearances including Barry Humphries, Rebel Wilson and Kate Moss who is supposedly killed by Eddy. Eddy escapes to the French Riviera with Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley who defies being 70 years old) to continue their hedonistic lives. Eddy is feeling regrets of age, but nothing a couple of glasses of bubbly can’t overcome, and Patsy flirts with cross-dressing. The outlandish story is full of alcohol, drugs and sexual innuendo, and there are some great laugh-out-loud lines. Unfortunately some of the attempts at humour fall flat and your enjoyment Ab Fab’s big screen debut will probably depend on how much you’ve had to drink.

Alan Clay (Tom Hanks) is in sales and after failed marriage and business in the US, he travels to Saudi Arabia to convince the king to buy the latest in hologram Skype technology. The king is carving a city out of the sand, or rather on top of it, and endless bureaucracy in the endless desert means that Clay doesn’t know when he and his team will get to demonstrate their technology. Adapted from a novel by Dave Eggers, the stranger in a strange land story is about overcoming a major midlife crisis. The opening sequence and Hank’s continual lopsided grin are clues that the journey is both wryly funny and sad at the same time. While waiting for the king, Clay does some exploring and some personal healing with the help of a local taxi driver (Alexander Beck) and Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury). Tom Tykwer’s film is risky, rambling and rewarding.

Revelation Film Festival will continue throughout the year with monthly screenings as part of Australian Revelations. This August the program will be presenting ‘Downriver’, a queer story of identity and self-discovery. The film stars Reef Ireland as a young ex-con who encounters secrets from the past and dangers from the present when he returns to the rural Australian community to discover the truth behind a crime he supposedly committed when he was a child. ‘Downriver’ also featured the legendary Kerry Fox, ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’s’ Helen Morse, Steve Mouzakis and Lester Ellis Jr from ‘Nowhere Boys’. The screening will be preceded by a showing of the local short film ‘Outline’, which was nominated for a West Australian Screen Academy award. Downriver will be screened at The Backlot Perth on Monday 29th August at 6:30. Tickets available from eventbrite.com

What have you been up to since we last saw you at The Court? Alot! I’ve been working on a new record. Had a great writing trip in the UK and also been filming for the new Alan Bond mini series!

‘X-Factor’ winner and Perth’s own Samantha Jade is heading back to town for a special home-grown show with Hannah Conda. Currently working around the world, touring Australia with her latest album ‘Nine’ and filming for an all-new television drama, Jade is an incredibly busy girl! We managed to catch her for a quick-fire round of email questions as she gears up for her west side show.

Tell us about the upcoming album! I am still working on it but it will be very heartfelt. I’m writing all the time (lots of emotions!) How’s the current tour going? Its been amazing ! I’ve loved every minute of being on stage with my amazing team! Why do you love performing at gay venues? I’m so happy to be coming back! I love The Court and being a Perth girl I have spent alot of time there hehe! Gay venues are so much fun to perform they are such an appreciative audience! What can we expect from your show with our girl Hannah Conda? It’s high energy and lots of fun! So excited to show The Court! Samantha Jade and Hannah Conda are performing at The Court Hotel, Saturday August 6th from 8pm. Tickets available from eventbrite.com.au

The fourth installation of Connections Nightclub’s Pop Princess competition is here, pitting six up-and-coming local drag performers against one another for five weeks of crazy challenges and fabulous fashions.

Who will follow Pop Princess 3 winner and OUTinPerth cover boy Harvest Dubois to take the coveted crown from the competition? Will it be Elle Lusion, Jemma Cyde, Cindy Crosscheck, Cougar Morrison, Izzy Little or Lani Da Rose? We asked the girls a few questions to help you get acquainted before the next Pop Princess is crowned at the end of August.

LANI

Describe your drag style in 3 words. Lani: Fierce, sexy and slutty. Cougar: Androgynous, old-school, poised. Izzy Little: Big, different, weird are the three words I’m going for in the long run. How long have you been doing drag? Lani: I don’t really know how long has it been, I’m really bad at remembering dates. Cougar: Since December 2015 (8 months)

COUGAR

Izzy: Show 1 this week! What is your ultimate lip-sync song? Lani: I’d love to Lip Sync to Listen by Beyonce or Bo$$ by Fifth Harmony

Cougar: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by Bette Midler. Izzy: One that I don’t stuff up. Who, or what, most inspires you? Lani: The people who appreciate me inspire me. As Latrice said on All Stars “It takes a man to be a woman” and I think some people have that in their mindset and that’s why I love it when people appreciate the art of drag.

Lani: I would say my Elmers glue for glueing eyebrows but that would be a lie. I can easily shave my eyebrows off again. Ha ha! For me it’s my phone. Im very sentimental and my boyfriend gave me my current phone and I will lose my sanity if I lose my phone.

Cougar: Edith Piaf’s courage and stubbornness, Dietrich’s style and vampiness and the sexiness of McQueen.

Cougar: Chips and gravy.

Izzy: Pinterest and my man Harvest.

What’s your catchphrase?

Izzy: Food because I’m hungry.

Race

Lani: I have words that I will say a lot like “Look”, “Stunning” and “Yummy”.

Lani: Raven! I think I cried all night when I confirmed the news that Raven is coming to Perth!

Cougar: Life’s too short to be boring. It’s also too short to not eat cake…

Cougar: Tammie Brown

Favourite RuPaul’s contestant?

Drag

Izzy: The funniest bitch from the north… Bob! What is the one item you cannot live without?

Izzy: Izzy Little? Nah.
