Jim Obergefell for PrideFEST Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the US Supreme Court case that brought marriage equality to the USA, will be a special guest at this year’s PrideFEST. Curtin University, in partnership with Affirm Press, Pride WA, KPMG and Herbert Smith Freehills are presenting an afternoon with Jim Obergefell as part of the PrideFEST celebrations. On Saturday November 11th Jim will share insights from the epicentre of the legal case for marriage equality and his best selling book, Love Wins. Pride WA Vice President Graham Lovelock said Obergefell’s appearance would be one of the highlights of PrideFEST 2016. “Jim’s book is compelling and is both heart-wrenching as well as heart-warming. It is a testament to the love he shared with his late husband John and a fitting tribute to his determination to honour their marriage.” Lovelock said.

Six months ago we were all shocked when it looked like OUTinPerth might disappear from our lives. When the company behind our publication closed we faced the possibility that the magazine would not continue. We worked quickly to create a new company to house the magazine and successfully bid to obtain the archives and intellectual property associated with OUTinPerth. This month we’re sharing those archives with you, firstly through a photo exhibition in our office space on the opening weekend of PrideFEST, and secondly with a reading room featuring LGBTIQ publications from around Australia. Drop by our office between Monday 14 November to Friday 18 November to take a trip back in time and see what people were talking about in years gone by. We’ve still got a long way to go to ensuring that Western Australia has an independent LGBTIQ print publication in the future. To date 106 people have contributed to our fundraising campaign to rebuild OUTinPerth. We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has supported us, and the many others who have attended fundraising events we’ve held.

To date the campaign has raised just over $12,000, which is a long way off the $45,000 needed to guarantee the magazine’s sustainability. While we have opened a new office, and continued to bring out the monthly magazine, we need assistance to purchase computers, cameras and essential software. If you like reading the magazine, logging on to our website, or getting our week day e-news in your inbox. Head to our GoFundMe page and show your support. www.gofundme.com/outinperth Happy Pride! When I think of the term Straight Ally, the first person I think of is Joanne Boyling. When we first met I thought she was lesbian. She tells me her friends tease her about that. When I spoke to her for this article she suggested she needed a T-shirt with ‘I Like Cock’ printed on the front. I promised to lend her mine. Joanne is a powerhouse of fun, warmth and generosity. A family support officer with a background in community support and play groups, she saw a need and decided to find a way to fill that need. Playgroups with Pride is the result. Can you remember the first time you became aware that not everyone around you was straight? I didn’t know gay people even existed until some friends invited me to go see the Pride Parade with them in Perth. I was in my early 20’s and looking back I can’t believe my naivety. I went along and it was completely awesome. Now, of course, I get to march in the parade alongside these wonderful friends of mine who are mums and dads raising beautiful families here in WA.
How did you become an ally of the LGBT community? I went to Bali on holiday with my family. My husbands’ cousin and his partner came with us. We were walking on the beach as the sun was going down. I turned around to look for where my daughter was and spotted her walking along happy and contented between these two gay men she absolutely adored. They were each holding my daughter’s hand. It was a beautiful moment that stayed with me for days. I remember thinking, ‘Where are all the gay families? Where are the gay Dads and Mums? Who supports their families?’ I realized I didn’t know the answer. I decided to find out. Was it hard to find out about that? It was really hard to find out information. There was nothing in government sources. There were websites about rainbow families but most of them were based in the US. Then I found a blog written by someone called Joey. She lived in Australia. She lived in Perth and was in the process of creating her own family with her partner Jude. I contacted her and, after some guarded conversations, we

concluded that one of the challenges for LGBT families was accessing welcoming and affirming playgroups. I could help with that. Joey connected me with other families. I did the Opening Closets training run by Living Proud. They helped me organise a morning tea. We started our playgroup in May 2013 with five families. Today it has grown to around 23 families. Was there any opposition to the group? We struggled initially. There were some people who were unsupportive and the families felt the negativity. Being visible has benefits but can also cause problems. The benefits are the connections and support that people can offer each other. That is so powerful. But when you become visible then sometimes the ignorance of others becomes more visible too. We attended the Save Safe Schools rally with our Playgroups With Pride banner. A photo of us was posted on the United Patriots Front website. We got some abusive emails. There were negative comments on Facebook. After the rally we sat down and talked about it. We are very protective of our children and their families and we respect individuals’ choices to be as visible or as low key as they want to be. This opposition just serves to highlight how vital it is to have Safe Schools and Playgroups with Pride. We are changing society and some people are going to be uncomfortable with that. Where does Playgroups with Pride meet? In 2014 we moved to the Derek Ernst Neighbourhood Centre in Morley. The playgroup meets once a week on Monday from 9.30-11.30am. We have occasional playgroups on weekends for families that can’t make it through the week. We have a website and a Facebook page. We have a presence at Fairday and we march in the Pride parade. Perhaps the most important thing is that we are creating a network for people to be community. People want to connect with families that look like their own family. Share stories that are similar, find encouragement and share information. Seeing the happiness, the fun, the extended friendships and the community that is growing is incredibly rewarding. Playgroups with Pride is totally self funded and relies on the goodwill of volunteers to keep things operating. Talking about relationships and sex can be difficult for some in the wider community. Many people feel embarrassed, shamed or nervous talking about sex, and may not be used to using the type of language needed to talk openly. For the queer community, talking about sex seems to come more easily. Gay men - compared to their hetero counterparts - are well versed in sexual health, relationships and pleasure. Is this why there are (proportionately) more polyamorous relationships in the queer community? Is the greater level of communication the reason for labelled groups and sub-groups, like twinks, bears and gold stars? While gay men can and will debate the merits of condoms, PrEP, PEP and TasP, straight men and women still say things like “Is AIDS even a thing anymore?” In the lead up to World AIDS Day, the WA AIDS Council aims to change this imbalance, and get the wider community talking about HIV. With a month long series of
events and advertising, the Council is asking the question: Is this what we are telling our kids about HIV?
PANTI BLISS HEADS DOWN UNDER
When parents are too nervous - or too busy – and schools scared to mention sex after the Safe Schools media coverage, who is left to talk to young people about a virus that still infects around 20 Australians per week? So get talking. Tell your straight friends, colleagues and family about HIV. Tell them about PrEP, PEP and condoms. Tell them to get tested as often as you do. The queer community have always led the HIV response, from caring for loved ones, to protesting inaction and demanding a Government response. We did it then, and we need to keep doing it, until there are no new infections per week in Australia. To Start the Conversation, visit www.WAaids.com or www.worldaidsday.org.au and use the hashtag #StarttheHIVConvo on social media
The Queen of Ireland, Panti Bliss, is coming to Perth. The world famous drag queen will perform her ‘High Heels in Low Places’ at the Astor Theatre Thurday 23 February.

A Transwoman’s Perspective on Body Image At 19 Nicholas Ralph Lake came out to the world as being transgender and wishing to identify as Isabelle Electra Lake. To friends and family this came with a mixture of uncertainty around what transgender meant, nervousness for the journey ahead and numerous mental notes to google “what does transgender mean?” Despite questions, Belle was lucky enough to have unwavering support. From 19-21 Belle began to explore different avenues with regards to surgery options, hormone treatment and the various ways she should demonstrate her femininity to the world. Alongside this personal journey, Belle also became an active member of the LGBTI community, councillor at the Freedom Center and drove for equality through drafting Safe Schools. Within this time frame, the passion, intensity and pure happiness emanating from Belle made it so clear to the world that she had finally become the person she was meant to be and had found her purpose and place. In these two years Belle was more dynamic, and demanded more out of life and humanity than most people. Unfortunately, at 21 Belle lost her battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Those people who knew Belle understood that over time her level of contentment and confidence increased as she became at peace with being non-gender associated. The essay below was written in her final months where she gained an increased clarity on what was important to her. The Lake family wishes to share it with the broader community to give a small insight into the bold and raw person that she was and encourage people to detach from society’s desire to define us by gender. The following is unedited. In many ways being trans gives us girls a break from what the fashion industry shoves down genetic girls throats. We didn’t grow up dealing with unobtainable standards of apparent “beauty”. As curious as I was about reading magazines like Cosmo while I was in my teenage years, I didn’t have any social pressure maintaining that the images displayed was how I was supposed to look. Despite all the pain and confusion involved around growing up a guy I am grateful that I did not have to endure such an unrelenting barrage of attacks against my self-esteem. Of course I did eventually have to deal with such societal pressures. These were compounded by the fact that I was desperate to pass as a girl. Just like a teenage girl growing up I looked for any sort of role model. A female identity that I could model myself off, given that my own was totally undeveloped. So I entered a period of my life I now look back with embarrassment. During my first year
as a woman how I looked became everything to me. I would not go out without a full face full of makeup and certainly not with my glasses on. Tops had to be low cut and skirts were essential. It took me almost 8 months to wear jeans and even longer to put on a T-shirt just because of the association these items had with my male apparel. The personality I attached to this image was even worse; I was intentionally vague and ditsy in order to complete my persona of a cute blond. However as much as I managed to conform to this much publicized female form I didn’t feel happy in it. It wasn’t due to a failure in obtaining this image either. I happen to be one of the lucky women who have the emancipated look deemed so attractive by today’s society. I just didn’t feel comfortable expressing an image that wasn’t truly me. Luckily I had an advantage over genetic women in dealing with such problems. When most women go through such angst all their friends are dealing with it as well. I on the other hand was surrounded by friends who had long dealt with such bullshit and had much more sensible views about their body image. Thankfully these managed to rub off on me. So in the end it turned out that my proudest moments in being a woman wasn’t the many times people had suggested that I model, it wasn’t the times I was called cute wearing that tartan mini skirt and it certainly wasn’t when I was hit on by guys who thought I looked hot. In the end my best moments were things such as when I stopped waxing my legs, even in summer, when I learnt to go out without makeup on or not doing up my hair. In short it was when I learnt to identify as a women regardless of how I looked, when I truly tossed away the ludicrous ideas of what a women should present as and presented how I felt I should. However for many trans women body image goes further than what your wear. While there are undoubtedly some women who chose to transition without hormones the majority of us take at least this step. When your first step into expressing your female identity involves major body modification it becomes much easier to continue along
this path and modify your body in a barrage of ways. IPL and electrolysis can remove any unwanted body or facial hair while hair implants can increase the volume on your scalp. Facial feminization surgeries exist in for nearly every problem you could image. The forehead can be recontoured, the brow lifted, the chin recontoured and the Adam’s Apple shaved, plus others. Then there’s the big one, Sexual Reassignment Surgery. While for some many of these surgeries are necessary in order to pass and live a discrimination free life, for others I fear it may just be the same trap genetic girls fall into with more classic marketing. A continuing desire to be more feminine than you currently look, even when you pass perfectly and plenty of genetic girls look more masculine than you. This isn’t even limited on outside forces presenting their highly warped idea of an ideal woman to us. Many transsexual purists preach their belief that any trans woman who doesn’t undergo SRS isn’t a real trans woman thereby setting a standard of surgery as an essential affirmation of who you are. While trans women (and genetic women) have the right to undergo whatever cosmetic surgeries they want I can’t help but wonder about how much of this is actually necessary. Where exactly is the line between what is needed to feel comfortable in your own body and what is undertaken because of unrealistic standards of feminine beauty set by society? So while trans women do managed to avoid the worst damage perpetrated by the fashion industry we have to deal with a whole new set of social pressures on our image. I will always be glad I managed to navigate the treacherous waters of body image relatively easily due to my trans status despite all the pain it’s brought otherwise. However I can’t help but think that the push to obtain a feminine body through the variety of surgical options is, to at least some degree the same pressure all genetic girls had to contend with growing up. An attack at the very core of who you are, pushing expensive, and frankly useless solutions to a problem you never knew you had. Isabelle Lake Foreword by Fiona Lake

GAY KISS SPARKS HATEFUL OPINION PIECE SINGAPORE
ASHERS BAKERY LOSES CAKE CASE NORTHERN IRELAND
An image of two men kissing on a train in Singapore has gone viral after a fellow passenger snapped a photo and penned an opinion piece about the public display for All Singapore Stuff.
Ashers Bakery in the United Kingdom have lost their appeal in a court case that found they had discriminated against a man by refusing to make a cake that had a pro-marriage equality message. Bakery owners Daniel and Amy McArthur refused to make a cake for Gareth Lee, a member of an LGBT advocacy group called Queer Space. Lee had ordered a cake featuring Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie with the phrase “Support Gay Marriage” to mark International Day Against Homophobia back in 2014. He was told the bakery could not complete his order due to the owners religious beliefs. The couple were taken to court under UK’s anti-discrimination laws and lost the case. They appealed the ruling which this week was upheld. The BBC has reported that Daniel McArthur has expressed disappointment with the court’s ruling. McArthur said he was “extremely disappointed” adding that it undermined “democratic freedom, religious freedom and free speech”. “If equality law means people can be punished for politely refusing to support other people’s causes then equality law needs to change,” McArthur said. “We had served Mr Lee before and we would be happy to serve him again. “The judges accepted that we did not know that Mr Lee was gay and that he was not the reason we declined the order. “We have always said it was not about the customer, it was about the message.”
“I was kind enough to take the pic without a direct shot of the boy’s face. I respect everyone’s rights, but this is Simply Disgusting [sic] in a public space,” the local resident wrote. “What if my children saw this and asked ‘Mummy, why are the two men kissing?’” The author was concerned that she would have to tell her children that same-sex relationships are the same as “normal love”. “The only difference is that one man opens his buttocks for the other man to put his private part inside but in the end, no babies come out. They only get AIDS,” she continues. Rainbow Rights WA have delivered their petition calling The piece, entitled Homosexuals Shd Be Grateful on the state government to remove historical gay for Pinkdot, We Have Already Given Them A Lot Of convictions. Spokesperson Jonathon Mann has previously noted that there is a big difference between a spent conviction “To rub salt into the wound, the author went and wiping away a conviction entirely, and offering an on to attack my act of love and affection,” apology would promote healing in the wider community. Eggenhuizen said. “But I feel the need to rise above it and raise “There are people who weren’t charged with anything awareness that this is unacceptable.” but they still had to live in a culture of homophobia that the state endorsed.” Mann said. GRINDR TAKES ACTION ON DRUG SALES USA Hook-up app Grindr has made changes to its system to inhibit people from openly advertising drug sales in their profiles. WEHOville, based in West Hollywood highlighted the issue last month, and noted OUTinPerth’s report from earlier this year. The media attention lead to politicians from West Hollywood, where Grindr’s head offices are located, demanding a meeting with the company’s CEO to discuss the issue. Grindr is now blocking cloud emojis from being used in people’s profiles as well as other key phrases and symbols related to illegal drug use. While images of clouds and the cloud emoji often symbolise methamphetamine use, the company has also taken action against images, phrases and symbols related to the sale of MDMA. Representatives from Grindr have not responded to media requests over the ongoing issue. Back in February WA’s Police Minister Liza Harvey told OUTinPerth that she was aware of the issue. “All law enforcement agencies are aware of the issue of drugs being bought and sold online.” Minister Harvey said. “Much of the work undertaken by WA Police in this area cannot be discussed due to operational reasons, however if a complaint is received by police, further inquiries will be carried out into the matter.’

What song is stuck in your head?
Yoga COMO Shambhala
If you’re struggling on where to start in your fitness journey, yoga is probably your best bet. The ancient practice is worth so much more than just a good Instagram snap. It teaches body awareness, breathing, mindfulness and increases flexibility. Before a class, I find my head is all over the place. I’m consumed with my ever growing to-do list, worried about my unanswered emails and trying to juggle everything in between. But when I step into a class, it’s time to switch off. The Perth fitness industry is saturated with classes, so I made it my mission to track down the most relaxing place to get my yogi on. My top choice? COMO Shambhala. It’s tucked away in one of Perth’s most iconic state buildings, COMO The Treasury. The whole space oozes serenity, and provides you with the best chance to achieve some inner bliss.
At the moment “Angel Down” by Lady Gaga. In fact her whole new album “Joanne” is stuck in my head! I live!! What do you miss most from Perth? I miss all of my beautiful family and friends first off. It’s so hard not seeing them every day. I also miss the two homes for the gays, Connections and The Court. And I am so very much miss Drag Box at Drag Factory. The debauchery that passes on that stage each and every time is something I miss incredibly.
If I wanted to buy you a drink, what should I order? 100% Vodka Red Bull. If that fails a delicate Vodka, lime and soda is a real treat. Do you think Anna Falaksis will finally win QOTC this year? Oh Ana, maybe 7th times the charm hey? HAhahah. That’s a great question. Where do you keep DIVA awards?
What do you never leave home without?
On the mantle, above the fireplace, inside of a gold plated box....
I never leave home with out my phone to stay in touch with the world and it’s also a mean tool in avoiding people you don’t want to speak to. My ventolin in case I get hysterical and have an asthma attack. Finally a packet of mints as there is nothing worse than bad breath.
Not really. Just on top of a box shelf, next to my speakers, an aromatherapy candle and a bottle of Truvada! On your last night at The Court you created an artwork by rolling around in paint... we’ve got new office are you willing to drop by
COMO Shambhala is in the middle of the busy urban jungle, offering Restorative, Yin and Vinyasa classes. These sessions are more than just a workout, they are a whole experience that’s affordable, accessible and achievable no matter what your fitness level. Restorative yoga is essentially a guided meditation. For a busy professional, it’s the much needed opportunity to lay still, breathe deeply and let all your stresses go. You walk in, grab a mat and blanket, a big bolster, eye mask and find your little piece of tranquility on the floor. After some light back stretches and peaceful moments of silence, the chimes sound and bring you back to earth to tackle your day. But now, you’re armed with a noticeable increase in energy and mental clarity. Yin is for the yogi who is still after that mental break, but can handle a bit more movement and stretching. Focused on opening up your hips and groin, yin offers glute and hamstring stretches followed by some light meditation to finish up. I found this practice to be super rejuvenating, and am told the overall effect is similar to that of acupuncture. So while fast paced HIIT sessions are great, slowing down with a restorative or yin yoga practice once or twice a week will clear your mind and help you to make better decisions in other facets of your life. After my practice, I walk out with a little internal smile and feeling of content. A lunchtime express class is the perfect way to keep your mind fresh and your body limber. Book your class online at comoshambhala.com Beau Carruthers Beau is the owner and director of ONE Fitness Health Lifestyle in Subiaco Image: Courtney McAllister
The Vengabus cannot be stopped! The Vengaboys are heading back to town once again, bringing their iconic ‘90s and ‘00s eurodance sound back to Western Australia. The Vengaboys (and girls) will be supported by an incredible line-up of dance music stars including Crystal Waters, Tina Cousins & Sonique. We caught up with Vengaboy Robin Pors to find out how he likes to party. What is the Vengabus bringing on this tour? “We are doing an entirely new show! Of course we are doing the classics like Boom Boom Boom Boom and We Like To Party but we’re gonna have some new stuff going on and some other songs we love as well. We’re gonna have a lot of fun! Actually, I am a bit nervous for this massive show - which is good because I never get nervous after performing almost every night. We have some special treats for Australia. It’ll be nice.” You were in Perth just a few years ago in 2012. You can’t stay away! “We have a thing for Perth! We love it so much we made it the last stop on the tour so we can relax there and chill on the beach. It was a wonderful tour last time, we loved it!”
and make some art while you’re in town? Hahaha!! You don’t need to ask me twice to get into my birthday suit and roll around in paint for a couple of minutes on a canvas! What a treat! What’s the latest slang word that Drag Queens use (and what does it mean)? Well I’m not sure about the Perth girls, I’ve heard “F*$k off Perri” is a good one in relation to Perri Oxide. But over here “girly” has been revived and is defiantly used to describe all things fun and frivolous. Given a choice would rather perform to Peter Allen’s ‘I Go to Rio’, Duran Duran’s ‘Rio’ or ‘Keep on Loving You;’ by REO Speedwagon. So after much deliberation “I go to Rio” wins out! I am a sucker for Peter’s flared pants, his penchant for ruffles and holding on to maracas. How many outfits will you wear on Pride night? Pride night at The Court is going to be wild. I feel there will be a few different outfits but you are all gonna have to come down to the Rio Carnivale Street Party to find out!
You have some amazing artists joining you on this tour - it must be a fun time behind the scenes. “It’s an amazing line up, we love it! It’s great to tour with other artists that have the same vibe. We have fun after the show, most of the time we have fun but it can be tough on the road as well. I love them all, I mean Crystal Waters’ 100% Pure Love is one of my favourite songs.” What new stuff can we expect from Vengaboys? “We’re bringing some album tracks we’ve never performed live before, for those long time fans who have been requesting them. We’re also going to debut a new track which we’re excited about, Australia will love it! We’re even thinking of putting it out there as a new single. It’s a test take! Vengaboys will be at Metro City on Saturday November 12th with Tina Cousins, Crystal Waters, Whigfield, Sonique and Joanne. Tickets available from metropolistouring.com.

Richard Matias has always has a keen interest in photography but two years ago he decided move on from taking holiday snaps and delve into artistic photography. “I’ve always loved photographic art.” Matias told OUTinPerth “I’ve always had a huge interest in art, in High School I did a lot of visual arts, drawing and painting, and I got the art award.” Like many young students Matias was encouraged to focus on more reliable career paths than an artistic one, but now he’s finding time to indulge in his love of photography. “Last year I decided I was going to take it seriously and start photography male nudes… I thought I’d push myself to get out of my comfort zone.” Matias said. “Taking of great photo involves a lot of things, there’s creating rapport with the model, there’s getting all the lighting, colour and balance right – and you only have a short space of time. You don’t have the luxury of the model being there forever. Matias said he’s built up his skills though a lot of trial and error but as he’s shot more models, he’s built up his confidence. Now models who have seen his work are approaching him and asking to work with him. Now Matias his hoping to raise money for charity by publishing his best work in a coffee table book.
“The theme of the book is about life and taking away the taboos around masculinity, coming out and nudity. I want to be able create something through my art, raise money through my art, it meets my goal of personally raising money for charity and it might also help some people too.” Matias said. Earlier this year the photographer generously donated an image to the WA AIDS Council to auction off during their STYLEAID fundraiser. Matias tells us that he was really nervous when the auctioneer reached his work, but there was a flurry of bids for the image. “The book is not just imagery, I also write a lot of text, sometimes I write something and then do a shoot relating to it, and then other times I might look at a photo I’ve taken and realise it relates to something I’ve written.” Matias shared. Matias has given himself two years to complete the project and is currently at the half way point. “Hopefully by this time next year I’ll have something solid that’s ready to publish,” Matias said. Check out Richard Matias’ work at richardmatiasphotographer.com, or find him on Instagram @ rich_t_matias and facebook.com/richardmatiasphotographer. Graeme Watson

This huge café in West Perth is buzzing with activity at breakfast time, people making deals, planning schemes, trading news – the atmosphere is energising. They have a great breakfast menu filled with muesli, fresh juices and hearty meals. We indulged in the baked eggs with lamb and cornbread – it was sensational. Gordon Street Garage is at 16 Gordon St, West Perth
Dance music goddess Luciana is back in town for the PrideFEST celebrations and will be performing at Connections Pride Party. OUTinPerth caught up with our favourite party girl ahead of her show. What have you been up to over the last 12 months since we last saw you in Perth for last year’s Pride festivities? It’s been a real fabulous year with new opportunities and adventures. I took six months off literally to re-model our home in California. We stripped it back to the barebones and started again from scratch. It’s my dream home, and I could not feel more blessed. As soon as that was completed, it was straight back into the studio. ‘Gold’ your collaboration with Max Styler and Devault has just come out, this track really surprised me, it includes so many different styles of music. How did this collaboration unfold? It is fabulous, right! As with all collaborations, it’s a process. First we get an idea for the track, we play around with melodies and lyrics until we feel we have something that sticks and feels catch and simple.... Sometimes it doesn’t come easy but this was so much fun it sort of rolled. It went back and forth in production for a few weeks and then voila!! GOLD. Last time you were in Perth your set included some pole dancers, drag queens and impromptu dance moves from some local boys. How are you going to top this when you play Connections?
You never really know what they have lined up until sound check and we kind of pull it together from there. I rely on my backing visuals to set the tone but I always welcome drag queens into my set because I just love the ‘sass’!!!!. The more outrageous the better. Once a drag queen gave birth to a life size baby doll on stage whilst I was performing, blood and all. It was Halloween so I kind of went with it!! If you could invite any three people over for drinks who’d be on the invite list? Ok, this is an easy question for me but giving that some are dead not very practical!! My cocktail party would consist of Bowie, Anthony Kiedis, Debbie Harry, Sophia Loren and Andy Warhol….and pasta!!!!!!
Nao
lunch
Nao has to be one of the best places to eat in Perth if you’re on a budget and really hungry. Their specialty is huge bowls of ramen with fresh noodles, (plain, spinach or chili) that are made at the restaurant. No matter what time of day you call by, you’re going to have to wait to get a table. But $12 for a ramen bowl (that’s bigger than your head) is value for money. Also you have to try the Takoyaki. Nao is at 117 Murray Street, Perth
Alongside your music you’ve also done art and photography, is this something your still into? Yes, it will always be part of me. Different things take centre stage at different times in your life. I can see myself in the future in my own studio that will be part photographic and part art. The two are so closely intertwined and I love to use both in the same process. I’m a Warhol baby in that sense…as long as i’m creating something…whatever it is…i’m happy! Look forward to seeing you all in Perth!!!!!! I am coming to Ciccerello’s for the chips !!!! It’s gonna be a highlight of my tour!!!!!! xxxxx Graeme Watson
Ria: Malaysian Kitchen This Malaysian restaurant in Leederville has a wide range of different Malaysian based cuisines, there’s Chinese, Indian, Portuguese and Thai influences across the menu. We devoured a chicken curry, a Beef Rendang, a lineup of satay skewers and some great vegetable dishes. The highlight though was dessert, don’t pick and choose. Just order them all. Ria: Malaysian Kitchen is at 106 Oxford Street, Leederville.
You know, just when you think you can’t top something, suddenly there are 24 people on stage with you….you gotta love those moments as they are so unexpected!!

Keeping Love In The Air John Paul Young is an Australian icon. His hit song Love Is In The Air hit the charts three times in a row… no easy feat. But more than this, his career spans almost half a century of singing and crooning and making the fans a-swoonin’ with over 4 million albums sold worldwide plus an OAM and induction into the Aria Hall of Fame.
Client Liaison Diplomatic Immunity Diplomatic Immunity, the eagerly anticipated debut LP from Client Liaison delivers a punch with upbeat, creative, funky tunes and strong lyrics with great vocal work. The fresh, sparkling and energised beats will get you moving and keep you locked on the unfolding narratives of local politics and national identity. “What defines us when we’re away? I could never live without you. Is this just a hotel stay, I’m gonna do it my way. We’re living in the right time.” Get into Client Liaison! See you on the dance floor! Elizabeth Thomas
Powell Sport Oscar Powell’s debut album Sport originally appearing challenging, quickly becomes a pleasure from start to finish. The album flickers between a multitude of genres and leaves the listener unable to predict the direction of individual tracks, let alone the entire album. The haphazard way the album has been put together with snippets of candid vocal samples and random melodies is most enjoyable. Would happily listen more than once. Fiona Lake
S’Express Enjoy This Trip Enjoy This Trip is a fun nostalgic trip back to the 80s. I enjoyed the hypnotic beats with a euphoric vibe. I loved that these track titles contained sexual innuendos and are often tongue in cheek. My favourite songs throughout the album are Pimp Pushers Prostitutes (Horsemeat Disco Remix), Superfly Groove (Rueben Ladytron Remix) and Nothing to Lose. It made me wonder what it was like at a rave back in the 80s. It makes such a deliciously fun party playlist! Mango Adonis
Cut Copy January Tape Electro band Cut Copy are hard at work on their fifth album but have surprised fans by dropping, what was initially a cassette only, release of very ambient music. Five tracks of beautiful electronic sounds that are surprisingly upbeat and engaging, but also perfect for a moment of transcendental meditation. I dug out my Walkman and listened to the album everywhere I went, but it’s now also available via iTunes. It’s very beautiful and well worth a listen. Graeme Watson
And now he’s back! John Paul Young and The All Star Band: The Vanda & Young Songbook is his new show which covers the hits of his colleagues Harry Vanda and George Young, responsible for a swathe of Aussie hits. John Paul Young took a moment to chat to OUTinPerth about hits, love and the fabric of Australian music. What goes into making a hit song? Nobody really knows. You never know until you let it fly out there into the public. If we all knew how to write a hit we’d all be doing it. It’s a mysterious thing. You’ve got to have your finger on the pulse as to what the radio stations are looking for, what the public are looking for… it’s a very difficult thing. It’s risky. It’s a risky business. I felt electricity from everything they wrote for me. I really enjoyed it. Sometimes my opinion was not on the mark. But I got to say with Love Is In The Air we quietly confident that we had a hit on our hands. And then for it to be in the British charts three times in a row…I mean that kinda thing just doesn’t typically happen. But we’re very grateful for that. Tell us about the new show you appear in? Basically I chart George and Harry’s career since they started writing in The Easybeats and through my career and the huge hit they had for Stevie Wright. They wrote a huge hit called Falling In Love Again. There’s plenty of fodder there, there’s plenty of hit songs there to wade my way through. We even do a little AC/ DC song called Long Way To The Top just as a tribute to George’s two younger brothers, Angus and Malcolm, because George and Harry were heavily involved in the making of AC/DC basically. Is love still in the air? Yes. Absolutely. Part of our worldly knowledge these days is that perhaps we’ve got just a little too much of it. Maybe we’re being burdened with problems that don’t exist in our world but they exist in other people’s worlds and that has an effect on you. I remember a story of a guy who was semi-depressed and he went to the doctors and the doctor asked ‘what do you do all the day’ and the guy said ‘I basically watch the news all day’ and doctor told him to turn the TV off because just by absorbing all this stuff the more likely you are to get depressed. Steer clear of the unnecessary and focus on your own life. John Paul Young and the All Star Band: The Vanda & Young Songbook will be at Albany Entertainment Centre on Friday Nov 25th and Astor Theatre Mt Lawley on Sat Nov 26th. Tickets available from teamworkproductions.com.au

“The heydays of the 1980’stranformed my life, I went from being completely unknown doing three gigs a week in tiny pubs to being known nationally with a number one album.” Jones said.
Kim Wilde and Howard Jones are playing The Astor Theatre this month, the double bill show sees both ‘80s hit makers playing separate sets but the pair are also confident they’ll team up and collaborate on a number too.
Wilde’s family has always been a musical one. Her father Marty Wilde is a well-known rockabilly star, and her Mum Joyce was part of the ‘50s musical ensemble The Vernon Girls. Wilde told OUTinPerth that her own children are very musical too.
“We’re going to perform a song together and I’m really excited about it, but it’s a surprise.” Wilde said when she spoke to OUTinPerth from her home in Hertfordshire. “You’ll have to wait and see what it is.”
“Our daughter Rosie is 16 and she’s a singer songwriter and Music College at the moment and our son Harry has his own rock band called Keid.” Wilde said, before noting that she only sees the 18 year old when he comes home to raid the fridge.
Wilde and Jones have often bumped into each other while performing at festivals over the years but this will be their first time touring together. Both artists put their long term success down to having a much grounded family life throughout their careers. Wilde has always worked closely with her brother Ricky Wilde who wrote and produced many of her hits. While her sister Roxanne tours with Kylie Minogue. Wilde recently released a Christmas EP to go alongside her 2014 Christmas album. Included on the EP was a cover of the song Keeping the Dream Alive, which was a hit for German band Freiheit back in 1988. The video featured Kim and Ricky collaborating over the years.
Surprisingly she’s also had the same manager for her whole career. With the Perth show being the end of the pair’s Australian tour Kim’s manager Nick Boyles will be signing off and beginning his retirement. “It’ll be the end of an era for me…I’ve worked with him since Kids in America, it’s going to be a big event for us that final show in Perth.” Wilde said. “We’ve been through a huge amount of our lives together so it’s going to be quite an emotional time.” Howard Jones said that keeping his friends around him always helped him keep his feet on the floor. The musician was 28 years old when his career took off in the early ‘80s and he was already married to his wife Jan Smith.
The singer scored a succession of hit songs with Like to Get to know You Well, New Song, Things Can Only Get Better, Life in One Day and No One is to Blame. Soon the performer was playing huge shows in iconic venues. “I was 28 when I got signed, so that’s really quite old compared to a lot of artists, I’d had a fair amount of life experience, and my wife Jan was really wonderful. I achieved success with my friends and they stayed with me. We started off playing the Nag’s Head in High Wycombe and ended playing Maddison Square Garden.” Jones said. One of the historic shows Jones was a part of was Live Aid in 1985; “I desperately wanted to be a part of it because I’d missed out on being on the Band Aid single.” Jones said, “As soon as I heard about Live Aid I would have moved heaven and earth to be part of it.” Jones said the moment the massive audience at Wembly Stadium began singing along to his song will always be one of the biggest highlights of his musical career. Kim Wilde and Howard Jones play the Astor Theatre Sunday 13 November. The Return of
Suzi Quatro
Rock legend Suzi Quatro is set to return to Australia early next year with her new trio QSP. The legendary musician influenced social change for women in the music industry and her career has flourished for more than five decades.
Quatro is an icon of the rock world, she jumped to number one in the Australian charts in 1973 with her track Can The Can, 43 years later the 66-year-old is still full of energy and creativity. Her latest project is a collaboration with The Sweet’s guitarist Andy Scott and Slade drummer Don Powell, both formidable musicians in their own right. They’ve named this new collaborative trio; QSP – a crafty play on their names. Quatro is very well loved in Australia and she knows it. She toured a farewell show two years ago, but

she says fan requests and a new band have enticed her to return. “I honestly did treat this like my final [tour], but there you go you should never say never because then you’re caught… Just all the responses, I mean the final was so magical. I think it was the only time in my life where I was satisfied completely. [I’m coming back] because everyone kept talking and everyone wanted more. Then my husband came up with the idea of my new supergroup QSP.” QSP is kicking off the upcoming February tour by Quatro, their first album consisting of six covers and six original tracks from the band. ”We’ve started off with covers because we needed to find the lay off the land, obviously we’re a new group, you know? Like Andy pointed out we didn’t have a blueprint. So we got together and each person picked two covers…and everything started to click-in and it was when we got to Just Like A Woman by [Bob] Dylan that I said to the guys…that’s us. And it was.” The national tour is split into two halves with QSP supporting the Suzi Quatro Show, so Quatro is supporting herself – something she laughs off.

“Only Suzi can do that you know!? I’m a Gemini so I can have all these different hats. Quatro time and time again sells out tours even after a fifty year long career. She puts her success down to her ability to be different and her passion for what she does. “You know I don’t just talk at people. I don’t just go out there and perform and take for granted that everyone’s going to rock up. I care. This is my key to longevity. Suzi Quatro performs one night only at the Crown Theatre on Saturday February 11th 2017. Tickets are released in January. Paul Van Lieshout Hunt

Local designer Chloe Clements has launched what may be Perth’s first non-gendered fashion label. Clements, who works in both graphic and fashion design, uses striking designs and vibrant colours in her pieces to draw focus to individual expression, rather than prescribed gender expectations. We caught up with Clements to talk about her work, and her vision for the future of gender and fashion.
designed to not draw attention to any part of the body, ie: tight on the chest and butt area.
“I’ve wanted to create clothing for a long time and I thought if I’m going to do this seriously and make a business out of it, I’m not excluding anyone according to body type or gender.”
While Clements in drawn to teal and flashes of bright colour in her designs, she wants those wearing Not Applicable designs to feel confidence above all else.
Clements says she wants to break those stereotypes of females playing the ‘princess’ and males playing the ‘hero’.
“Mixed patterns and bold print trends are fun, creative and edgy. It’s all about confidence!”
“It’s time for me to stand up for something I care about and feel passionate about. I’ve let clothing and society’s ideas of a body type rule my life for too long and now it’s my time to stand up for what I believe and using fashion/clothing to do that, I feel it’s ironic but effective.”
While there are many labels in the fashion world which create and distribute unisex lines, non-binary labels are few and far between.
Clements says the passion project is in part an art practice, a study of bodies, body issues and gender. “Teal & white are mostly used in the designs. As much as it’s okay for men to wear pink and females to wear blue. These colours are definitely used to place stereotypes on people, even from birth. Teal is a bright bold colour that I think doesn’t define anyone’s gender. In terms of the cut and sizing; the shirts are all one size and quite a larger size, giving people the chance to wear the shirts in a way that fits and suits their body type. The shirts also are
“It was constantly on my mind until I came across this amazing Belgian creative label called Mosaert, that I discovered has the same goal as Not Applicable but also has shirts for younger children - not just adults. I am crazy in love with what they are doing and their designs and fabric they use.” More and more, high fashion and haute couture designs are moving toward an androgynous focus and Clements wants to bring a taste of that to Western Australia. “High fashion loves to push boundaries and I think on runway and in magazines there is a current trend towards non-binary clothing/androgynous fashion. For example, men are wearing skirts and dresses a lot more now, who do not necessarily

identify as a woman, they may have decided, this is a way for them to express perhaps the inner ‘I don’t care what people think about me’. But there are no set rules on how nongendered people choose to dress, some may not want to give away male/female identity and some may like to mix female & male clothing.” Clements is looking forward to expanding her range in the future, but right now her focus is getting Not Applicable on the streets and exploring the fashion world. “I am still learning the ways of the fashion industry and what works for body types which is why I am really trying to start an art practice around body type/gender and learn from people and hear people’s experiences and let that guide me for what is to come next.” Not Applicable designs can be found online at chloeclem.com Keep your eyes peeled for Not Applicable in pop-up stores around the city throughout the summer and in the fashion show at TransTastic Talent Showcase on Saturday November 5th at Connections Nightclub.

Jordan Bruno and his mother Anna won hungry hearts around the nation on the seventh series of Seven’s reality series, My Kitchen Rules. Though the Bruno’s didn’t take out the major prize, Jordan has become one of the program’s most successful graduates. The openly gay cook has used the platform to grow his social media presence and get to know Australia’s LGBTI+ community. Bruno has just launched in initiative to raise awareness for mental health issues that affect LGBTI+ youth in the form of a cookbook, filled with family recipes and stories from the community about coming out and learning to love yourself. We caught up with Bruno to find out why he wanted to serve up some love in The Gay Chef.
it is tight knit. I just put one post on Facebook and I had four law firms, four graphic designers, around five photographers… the hardest part was trying to decide who to use for their craft.” What do you think about the lack of LGBTI+ people represented on Australian TV?
What drove you to put this book together? “Since My Kitchen Rules in May I’ve grown a bit of a social media profile and I’ve had an outpouring of messages from LGBT youth across Australia, about 1 to 3 kids a week tell me they’re contemplating suicide or they’re depressed or anxious because of their sexuality. I’ve been talking with these people constantly and I found myself overwhelmed trying to help all of these people. I feel the need to respond, I feel guilty if I don’t answer because I know what it’s like to be so scared and frightened. I initially wanted to make rainbow pasta and sell it with the proceeds going to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues but I decided on the cookbook so I could reach a broader audience.” Did you draw upon your own experience of coming out? “I struggled with my sexuality and I’ve had friends struggle but I’m past that point in my life now. It’s more about a broad range of people who were reaching out to me and I really wanted them to know they weren’t alone. When you are in the process
AMERICAN HONEY (MA) Directed by Andrea Arnold
Star (Sasha Lane) is the orphan of a meth mother. The audience first meets in a dumpster in America’s South, searching for food with two young children. A group of raucous adolescents catch her eye as they taunt the security at a nearby shop. She is fascinated by charismatic Jake (Shia LaBeouf) who encourages her to join the travelling sales crew who drive across America selling magazine subscriptions. Star abandons the ‘little fuckers’ with their disinterested mother and walks out of her abusive relationship with the kids’ father to join the vagabond young people that nobody is going to miss. Their desperate life on the road takes them to the grimiest parts of America. Alcohol, drugs and plenty of sex help to numb these young people to the fact that they are on the road to nowhere, to the intoxicating beat of hip-hop music. A fascinating three hours.

of coming out, you do feel scared. There may be out people around you that you don’t identify with, or you don’t see in your day to day life which can make you feel so isolated and this is my way of taking that feeling away.” Have you chosen these particular recipes for a reason? “All of the recipes we cook in my household are family based, so I said to Mum that I wanted to fill the book with recipes and an awareness component because food is what brings people together. It’s how my family shows love and affection. If you want to tell someone you love them, you serve them a big bowl of homemade pasta. I wanted to send that message of love in my cookbook.” The book has only just been released and you’ve already had a massive outpour of support. “The LGBT community in Western Australia is powerful. Like, fierce. I wouldn’t want to mess with our community because
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (MA) Directed by Tom Ford
Writer/ director Tom Ford weaves two separate stories into one in this revenge thriller. Wealthy art gallery owner Susan (Amy Adams) lives with her impossibly handsome partner (Armie Hammer) in an impossibly opulent but austere apartment. Bored with her work and her love life, Susan is intrigued when ex-husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal) sends her the proof of his novel “Nocturnal Animals”. Dedicated it to her, the novel is a horrifically violent tale of a kidnapped family. As she reads the shockingly gripping tale, Susan is forced to confront her role in their doomed relationship. Her cold apartment and the desert heat of the story jar against each other each time the narratives switch. Amy Adams is pristine and Jake Gyllenhaal excels as both the ex-husband and the father in the fiction that exposes scars that remain when one doesn’t have control of ending a relationship

“Don’t even get me started! Whoever did the editing on my season of My Kitchen Rules needs a slap in the face. I talked about my sexuality on camera, I had a boyfriend in my backstory and a boyfriend during my entire run on the show. Every other contestant’s relationships were mentioned except for mine. My sexuality was cut out completely. While you’re filming you have no idea how production works, so I thought a light would be shone upon my sexuality. After the show, I did a six to eight hour interview for a bunch of publications where I talked about my career, what I want to do, where I’m going in life and about 20 mins about my sexuality. The only thing to get published from that was my sexuality. I think that just shows how far the media has to go: it’s either all you are, or not at all. There’s no happy medium.” How can people support the project? “Enter your email and you will be sent an e-book and given the option to donate to either Headspace or Minus18 and the book itself promotes awareness of mental health issues as well. The cookbook is filled with people sharing their personal experiences with mental illness and a collection of support networks for those who are suffering such as who to call, where to go and how you can help your friends.” The Gay Chef is available for download at jordanbruno.org.
ELLE (MA)
DR STRANGE (PG)
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Directed by Scott Derrickson
Paul Verhoeven loves controversy and confronting sexual taboos. The opening scene of his latest film is reminiscent of the sexual potency in the opening of his film Basic Instinct. Elle’s cat witnesses her owner being violently raped. Afterwards, Elle (Isabelle Huppert) calmly sweeps up broken crockery and the audience is left wondering if it was rape or consent in this truly twisted tale. Elle is a convoluted character. She heads a video game company that features equally violent sex in its games and she is a ruthlessly demanding boss. Yet at home, she accepts help from neighbour Patrick (Laurent Lafitte) to make sure her house is safe from further intrusion and reveals to him how she is the child of a murderer. She does not report the rape to the authorities but casually brings it up at a dinner party with friends. Adapted from Philippe Djian’s novel, this is a darkly enthralling film.
The latest from the Marvel compendium of films features surgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). He does irreparable damage to his hands when his ego defeats his intelligence and he has a stupendous car crash. In search of a miracle cure, he travels to Nepal to seek help from a Celtic mystic in the form of The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). It pays not to try to think too much about the meet of Eastern mysticism with special paradoxes that manipulate the space/ time continuum. Or even that Strange goes from novice to superhero complete with scarlet cape in record time to defeat the immortal ones who want to take over the world. Breaking the rules for the greater good, Dr Strange battles in a marvellous universe of kaleidoscopic effects. And he defeats evil with a surprising amount of humour Lezly Herbert

What Have You Done
Today To Make You Feel Proud?
Pride events all over the world are (and should be!) a celebration of LGBTI people and their continued push for equal rights. Generally, younger generations of LGBTI people enjoy more understanding and acceptance today than those who came before them. This has been hard-won and there is still a lot to be done, this is especially true for trans* and intersex people. As a young(ish!) gay man I have remained fairly ignorant of LGBTI history and the current reality outside my own experience until recently, but this is something I am changing. I am passionate about educating myself and others, as this increases awareness of the issues and injustices still very much affecting LGBTI people. I will be out with many of the community celebrating Pride as I have in the past, but this year I am more aware of why (and I hope you are too!). Below are some facts, figures and a timeline, with a mainly Australian focus, to provide a snapshot of where we are as a country on LGBTI rights and issues.
1969 - Stonewall Riots 1978 - Police in Sydney arrest 53 people at the first Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

passport legislation allowing for an ‘x’ gender option, and the ability for transgender people to select their gender without medical intervention.
