inside out

DATING PG6 World AIDS Day was observed at the beginning of the month, the twenty eighth time December 1st was declared the annual day to raise awareness, celebrate achievements and remember all those we lost to HIV/AIDS. It was notable that many print publications shared stories about people living with HIV. Many of those interviewed were sharing their experiences decades after receiving a diagnosis that, at the time, was deemed a death sentence. Next to them were accounts from younger people, barely in their twenties, who have recently been diagnosed with the virus. Yet, when it came to our TV news and the world of commercial radio, there was barely a mention. Our State Health Minister had no announcements to make.

As we worked out way down Beaufort Street chatting to people at the venues and along the street, one thing was immediately clear, most people have no idea about what the current state of play is. The message isn’t getting through. The volume needs to be turned up. What is the conversation though? In Australia, the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day was “HIV is still here and it’s on the move.” A call for renewed vigilance and action as positive diagnosis continue to be recorded. At the WA AIDS Council’s film screening in the Northbridge Piazza, Ryan Oliver, a representative of the National Association of People Living with HIV Australia, spoke about the stigma that people living with HIV face daily. His speech highlighted the challenge creating alarm and tackling stigma concurrently, it’s not easy to achieve one without sacrificing the other.

The new awareness campaign from the WA AIDS Council asks “Is This What We Telling Our Kids about HIV?”, the We need many conversations, many messages, many question appearing under a mute symbol. The campaign asks different campaigns. As 2016 ends, the conversations about us to start a conversation. HIV are still complex, multifaceted and regrettably all too Half our media are mute on the topic and not joining infrequent. How are you using your voice? conversation. Graeme Watson A few days later I joined a group of people for Double Happiness. A new event for Perth, a pub crawl to spread the graeme@outinperth.com word about what HIV means in 2016.

The event highlighted that those who have HIV can contribute to stopping the virus by adopting treatment as prevention (TasP). While those who do not have the virus, can protect themselves via same sex practices and access to PreExposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). On both sides of the equation we should be celebrating these achievements, double happiness.

Henderson Skene is a new dating agency that caters for LGBTIQ+ people. We asked Josh and Ryan, the duo behind the service their advice on having a great date and why a matchmaking service might be a good choice.

apps, our clients receive a fully personalised service with their own personal matchmaker.

What was the inspiration to start Henderson Skene Introductions? We had both experienced the Perth gay online dating scene which we believed to be overly sexualised and very ‘transactional’.

Safety & Security - All our members are required to go through a pre-screening process before attending an Introduction, which are held in public venues. During an Introduction, the client’s Matchmaker is ‘on call’ just in case. Also, the personal details of all members are kept confidential.

We also found it to be unsafe, lack privacy and full of fake and misleading profiles. We did some market research and found that like us, others wanted a more wholesome alternative to online dating but had no other alternatives to these online services. For these reasons, we were motivated to create a service for people who were serious about finding a long-term relationship. Additionally, we wanted to create a ‘game changing’ service for the LBGTIQ community that promoted a positive, healthy gay lifestyle. When someone signs up to a service such as yours, what is it that you offer? An individual who signs up with us will receive a fully personalised, confidential and certified Matchmaking service. Everything we do is for our members. Firstly, we meet with our clients face to face, to get to know them, their relationship goals and partner preferences. We then use this to construct their confidential profile, which we use to present them in their best light to compatible matches. We provide membership options that are tailored to an individuals dating goals. Ultimately, we become their ‘love life PT’, taking care of their love life so they can focus on other aspects of their life. We are always touching base with our clients to provided ongoing support. What do people get from a dating agency that they don’t get from social media apps or old fashioned dating rituals? Personalised Service - Unlike most online dating websites and

Real people - Our clients meet real people with a real interest in them. Instead of spending hours online, our clients can invest time in making a real connection.

Feedback - Following an Introduction, all members will provide and receive constructive feedback. This is something that people wouldn’t usually receive if they date alone and it allows them to improve their dating skills. Compatibility - Instead of individuals having to search for ‘random’ people, we bring compatible matches to them. Matches who align with their core values, goals and interests.

What type of people find a match-making service useful? Our services are useful for people who find that the current dating services do not work for them and who are serious about finding a meaningful relationship. Additionally, our services are for individuals who may not have enough time to devote to their love life or who aren’t into the ‘gay scene.’ What makes a good date? For starters, a good date needs to start with a ‘good foundation’ of both individuals knowing they are both there for the right reasons. Honesty is key. It may sound cliche, but being yourself really is the best way to approach a new dating experience. Balancing the conversation. Taking the opportunity to listen will not only show you are interested, but will allow for better conversation. Not taking the date too seriously. Making sure to have fun and enjoy the experience. Dressing to impress. Make a good first impression by looking your best. Being polite to your match and service staff. Prior to the Introduction, the individuals are matched based on compatibility and given a profile summary of their match so they can get a sense of who they are. In comparison to online dating, individuals are able to develop a true sense of their match before meeting them, which puts them in a better position to truly connect and look towards a second date. Unfortunately, we can’t create chemistry and if an introduction doesn’t go so well, we can use feedback from both individuals to make the next one more successful.

Common Dating Errors to Avoid

news

Terry Healy wants to make a difference in education but the High School teacher from Southern River has realized, that to bring about the change he believes is essential, he’s going to have to step out of the classroom.

College helping students find apprenticeships or get ready for the journey to University.

“The tipping point was education funding.” Healy told OUTinPerth of his decision to stand for parliament in the seat of Southern River. “I love teaching and never planned to get into politics.”

“People are really unhappy about the current government. We’re in the outer suburbs where more and more people have moved into the community and we’ve had no infrastructure upgrades, people have been lied to about public transport, no schools have been built and services have been cut.

When Healy reflected on the effects of ongoing funding cuts to the education system he decided that it was time to act and stand up for the priorities he believes are not being addressed by the current government. The recently married teacher and his wife have just welcomed their first child, making them like many of the young families living in the suburban electorate that’s currently represented by two term Liberal Peter Abetz. “If I can fix education funding and restore respect for schools, and training, and career development – which has had all its funding sucked out over the last eight years – then I can return to being a teacher having improved it.” Healy said. Ten years into his teaching career Healy talked about his love of teaching career development and English. This year he’s taken on the role of Year 12 coordinator at Southern River

Hitting the streets at door knocking voters has been an informative experience for Healy, who has realised that many parents recognized his face and happily shared their concerns.

“People are unhappy that things that they have been promised just hasn’t been delivered. The biggest concerns are jobs and employment.” Healy said he’s a distinctly different candidate to the incumbent member, the outspoken former minister of religion Peter Abetz. While Abetz has become a leading voice against marriage equality and the Safe Schools Coalition, Healy has conducted same sex weddings and says he’s seen firsthand the positive outcomes the Safe Schools program delivers. Healy also said his experience of talking to people in Southern River has shown that people are not concerned about the issues Abetz spends a lot of time focusing on.

“Nobody has raised the issue of kids having two Dads, or Safe Schools, or prostitution. Nobody has raised them, but I’ll be honest – they know that he raises them; while in eight years we have no primary school built here, and in eight years there’s been no train station.” “People are been duped a couple of times, but they’re starting to wise up and realise that the local member is spending his time on issues that are not relevant to them.” Healy said. Healy shared that he is proud to call himself a Christian and argue that allowing marriage equality is in line with Christian teachings. An experienced civil marriage celebrant, Healy said the one wedding he was incredibly proud to officiate was between Stephen Dawson MLC and his partner Dennis Liddlelow. Healy travelled with the couple to the ACT in 2013 when same sex marriage was briefly legal. A few days later the High Court declared the ACT’s marriage laws invalid, but Healy said he looks forward to a time when same sex weddings will be legalised. Graeme Watson

South Metro MLC, Lynn MacLaren and her wife Sarah Holt-Foreman can’t wait to throw a big party and invite all their friends around to celebrate the couple’s recent nuptials. The politician and her partner recently flew to San Francisco to wed. For a few weeks, only a few close friends knew the happy news. MacLaren admits she was a little nervous about how the news would be treated by the mainstream media. “We were a bit worried about how it will come out and how it would be treated by the mainstream press. You just never know which tack their going to take – we do live in interesting times.” MacLaren said. After revealing their news in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Times the couple have spoken to many outlets about their decision to get married, and thankfully the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The couple shared their news at a recent cross-party Pride event held at parliament house where MacLaren shared how being married had made her feel very different. “I do feel different, it’s hard for me to put into words. As I said at the event at parliament, I’m a fifty-something lesbian, I never rated it very highly. I’ve had wonderful relationship which have not had the added formalisation of marriage, but in our partnership, we wanted to do it. I do feel different, it has grounded me, it feels great.” MacLaren said. “It hasn’t changed the everyday” Holt-Foreman said, “But it has changed the way people are responding to us, and seeing that pure excitement people have when they find out you’ve gotten married is the real difference. It’s like you’ve transcended to another level. I didn’t anticipate that.” Holt-Foreman reveals that MacLaren didn’t accept her first two proposals, describing them as ranging from impulsive moments to more structured presentations. “Third times a charm” Holt-Foreman laughed as we caught up for coffee in Fremantle. She quickly stressed though that is perfectly fine to tell your partner that you’re not ready to get married yet. “I think each time you’re coming from a place of love and expressing your commitment to another person and indicating that you’re ready to shift to another level.

“I think it’s OK to ask and its OK for the other person to say that they’re not ready to take that next step, I think sometimes we rush into things too quickly. I think it’s respectful to the other person to wait until you’re both ready. When Holt-Foreman asked for the third time, things were different for the couple. Five years ago, she discovered she had breast cancer and underwent treatment. She had been free of cancer for two years, but a recent test showed the cancer had returned and this time it was in her bones. In the wake of the disappointing news, Holt-Foreman made her pitch, and this time MacLaren accepted. Once the couple had decided to get married, their next question was where they would go to make it official. San Francisco was chosen, and the pair had just a few days to run around like crazy and prepare for the ceremony. Holt-Foreman said although they had a joyous ceremony, it was also tinged with the melancholic awareness that once they returned home to Australia their marriage would no longer be recognised.

The couple said they hope the situation in Australia will change soon and everyone will get access marriage, an important rite of passage. “It’s something that is denied to us, explicitly because of our sexuality. No other factor. Just because we’re same sex attracted we’re denied this right and it’s pervasive throughout society. You don’t see it until it’s gone.” MacLaren said. MacLaren said the marriage debate in Australia really highlights the places where LGBTIQ people don’t feel accepted, but is hopeful that a political solution will be found to the roundabout of plebiscite and election promises. The couple said they can’t wait until Australia resolves the issue of marriage equality and everyone can experience what they’re experiencing. “There will be a lot of big gay weddings to attend in our future” Holt-Foreman said. Graeme Watson

“It’s a weird experience – not being recognised – but it is recognised by all your friends. It’s an interesting dichotomy.” Holt-Foreman said. The couple said they chose San Francisco as a place to get married because of the city’s rich gay history and because it’s a place where LGBTIQ people feel very safe. “It does make a difference, in a city like San Francisco, and in particular if you go to the Castro district, where LGBTIQ relationships are celebrated, where people of significance are honoured by markers in the pavement, where businesses put queer friendly signs up. It does make you feel more relaxed and less guarded.” MacLaren said. “Then you realise how guarded you are normally.” MacLaren reflected on how different it felt to be comfortable holding your partner’s hand in the street, something she admits she wouldn’t always be comfortable doing in Perth. “I’m one hundred percent confident, but still there are times that I don’t feel comfortable holding Sarah’s hand. Those are the things we need to change in society.” MacLaren said. “Those are the kind of invisible barriers that a thing like having the right to marry – is going to be so powerful in eliminating.”

world OUT PM MARRIES HIS PARTNER LUXEMBOURG Xavier Bettel, the openly gay Prime Minister of Luxembourg, married his long term partner in November. The ceremony between Bettel and his now husband, Gauthier Destinay, was officiated by the mayor of Luxembourg City who has been a friend of the Prime Minister for decades. “I wouldn’t have thought that 33 years later I would officiate his wedding and that to as lovely a man as Gauthier,” Mayor Lydie Polfe said. The husbands are now the second same-sex married couple to include a currently sitting world leader, following Iceland’s Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir, who married her partner Jonina Leosdottir in 2010. Bettel will make history as the first EU leader to marry their same-sex partner. Bettel is currently the only out LGBT world leader since the end of Sigurdardottir’s term in 2013, and Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo completing his term in 2014.

SERIAL KILLER STEPHEN PORT GETS LIFE UK British serial killer Stephen Port will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was found guilty of drugging, sexually assaulting and murdering four gay men in London. Port met his victims through online dating apps. The trial judge, Justice Openshaw, sentenced Port to a whole life sentence for the murders but was also additionally given another life sentence

for the sexual assaults and a sentence of ten years for the drugging of the men. Port was found guilty of the murders of Gabriel Kovari, 22 a student; Daniel Whitworth, 21, Jack Taylor, 25, a fork lift driver and aspiring fashion designer Anthony Walgate, who was 23. Port was also found guilty of offences committed for a string of sexual offences committed against seven other men who came forward and testified at the trial. Port left each of the men’s bodies near his house, leaving them in the street or the cemetery of a nearby church. Two of Port’s victims were known to each other. When Port placed the body of Whitworth in the cemetery he left a fake suicide note claiming that the dead man was responsible for the death of his friend, Gabriel Kovari. Sentencing Port to spend the remainder of his days in prison the judge said Port had delivered “wicked and monstrous lies” during the trial. The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into why Port was not apprehended sooner. They are currently reviewing 58 cases that involve the drug GHB.

Students request for the information to be kept private cannot be honoured under the proposed law. Senator Burton wrote on her website that the bill was a response to new guidelines pertaining to transgender students in Fort Worth, which forbade staff from informing parents if their child identified as trans* or gender diverse. The Fort Worth guidelines were repealed after a successful campaign by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, to which Senator Burton was aligned. “We found these provisions in desperate need of clarity and expansion. That is why I am planning to file a bill that rewrites these provisions to make it unequivocally clear that a parent has a right to full and total information on their child’s academic performance, physical, mental and emotional health, and more,” Senator Burton wrote. “Further, my legislation will make it expressly against state law for a district to adopt policies designed to undermine a parent’s right to know. No parent in Texas should ever have to fight for the basic right to matter in their child’s life again.” Senate Bill 242 will not be considered until January 2017, when the Texas Legislature resumes at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s first year.

Texas lawmaker and member of the Tea Party movement, Senator Konni Burton, has submitted a bill proposing that all public school POLICE AND employees must tell parents if their children RELIGIOUS GROUP RAID identify as LGBT. An Islamic group with a reputation for harrassing minorities has claimed that it worked with police to break up a so-called sex party in Jakarta. The group, the Islamic Defenders Front (or FPI), claimed its investigative unit tipped off police to conduct a “successful raid” Saturday on a home in Jakarta. The FPI’s social media accounts posted photographs of police taking in men for questioning, and local media reported that mobile phones and HIV/AIDS medication were confiscated from the premises. The Jakarta Post has reported that a mob of men broke into an apartment with the aid of the buildings security. A short time later the police arrived an took the men into custody. None of the materials that were seized are illegal in Indonesia, nor are same sex relationships. Human Rights Watch said the fact that the FPI prompted such a raid is no surprise. Nor was it surprising that the authorities followed the Islamist group’s tip to round-up an innocuous gathering that violated none of Indonesia’s laws. The watchdog group described the event as being “disappointingly familiar.” Human Rights Watch said it is time for the Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo to take action to protect the rights of LGBT Indonesians. “President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recently said he opposes criminal sanctions for LGBT people. Now his administration should demonstrate that commitment by ordering an investigation into why the police took cues for a discriminatory raid from a militant Islamist group.” Human Rights Watch said.

Loton Park Tennis Club marked their centenary and celebrated the completion of their recent renovations with an afternoon tea that reflected on the club’s long history. Premier Colin Barnett attended the event alongside Liberal members Eleni Evangel MLA and Michael Sutherland MLA, and the Mayor of Vincent John Carey. Where’S the WA PrEP Trial? After two unsuccessful appeals, transgender woman CJ Palmer has been granted bail by District Court Chief Judge Kevin Sleight. Palmer, age 38, has been incarcerated in a men’s corrective facility since February of this year, spending much of this time in solitary confinement. Robin, transwoman and assistant director of TransFolk of WA, spoke of the dangers in placing transwomen in male prison. “For a transwoman, placement in an all-male prison creates significant undue suffering that would not be encountered by the usual male inmates,” Robin said. “The safety and health of any woman placed inside such a facility should be cause for alarm alone, but combining that with the traumatic experience of being denied recognition of gender identity makes the state government’s treatment not just unfair, but a violation of basic human rights.” In spite of these risks, the WA Department of Corrective Services are bound by the WA On World AIDS Day, Askanka Gunasekera, Chair of the WA AIDS Council, Gender Reassignment Act, which requires a lengthy and expensive application process. congratulated on South Australia on their recent announcement that they Associate professor and psychologist Sam Winter spoke to OUTinPerth on this issue: “The case of CJ Palmer is, among other things, a sad reminder of the great hardship transgender people experience whenever their birth certificates do not match their gender identity. Her most recent challenges were in regard to gaining appropriate accommodation in Casuarina prison. She never gained it. And in Western Australia, as in some other places in the nation, the process of changing one’s birth certificate can be a long and expensive one,” Professor Winter said.

“This leaves Western Australia as the only major jurisdiction in Australia that has not made such arrangements. A proposal has been with the Minister for Health, the Honourable John Day for some time and we are keenly waiting to learn of his decision.” Gunasekera said.

Ryan Oliver, state representative for the National Association of People With HIV Australia, told the crowd at the gathering given the medical treatments now available there was no “These costs can be prohibitive, especially when your gender identity makes it more diffi- reason for new HIV transmissions. cult to get a job. a death sentence. Baines’ counterpart Ryan Oliver says younger men who have sex with men seem to have less awareness of HIV than previous generations.

you to identify your HIV status on their admission forms. One participant told the group that a masseuse once put on latex gloves once they had revealed they were HIV+.

As World AIDS Day was marked around the world for another year, the LGBTI and wider communities are called to look at the great strides and great losses the world has seen with regards to HIV and AIDS. People living with HIV (PLHIV) still face a terrible stigma in contemporary society, which could be chalked up to a lack of education, resources, or media coverage.

“When I was working for an airline a young gay guy from the cabin crew and I were having a coffee during turnaround and he said something quite rude about HIV. I asked if he’d like to take it back and disclosed my own status to him. He said you can’t have HIV because you’re so fit and healthy. I had virtually the same conversation with another guy on the crew,” Oliver recounts.

A group of people in Western Australia living with HIV are calling for people to start more conversations about HIV, and to include those people who are living the experience. OUTinPerth hosted a conversation with a number of people from varied backgrounds living with HIV (including Paul Baines and Ryan Oliver of NAPWHA), and some who are not, to see what questions arose on the subject.

These are young gay guys that are out there and say they have a boy in every port. If they’re sexually active, you’d think they’d have a greater knowledge but they were obviously sero-sorting by Grindr profiles or by their perception of what people living with HIV look like. We don’t look any different.”

One group people living with HIV had all had concerns with, were dentists. One participant told the group they had at one point counted 27 dentists they had been through to find one who would treat them respectfully. The group mentioned experiences of dentists mentioning an “extra thorough clean” and would only see them at the end of the day so that other patients wouldn’t be in the room after them.

“It’s not in mainstream press anymore, so we don’t all really talk about it. Because we’re not dying, we’re not ‘special’ anymore,” National Association of People Living With HIV representative Paul Baines notes. With great advances in treatment and accessibility over the last decade, PLHIV experience a much greater quality of life than in earlier years. Baines says the conversation has become quieter since an HIV diagnosis is no longer

The experiences of those in the room living with HIV were disparate, including some who were born with the virus, and others who had become positive later in life, some from the LGBTIQ+ community and without, the group’s hopes for the future of PLHIV was united.

Those in the room who were living with HIV said that disclosing your status can be a daily challenge, with one member explaining that unlike other manageable chronic illnesses, there is no fear of divulging to a lover or employer that you have Diabetes, as it does not carry the same stigma as HIV.

When asked what they foresaw for the future of people living with HIV, many in the group said they wished for an end to stigma. Some of the participants said this was higher on their wishlist than a cure.

The stigma of HIV permeates into areas of personal and professional lives that might not be considered by someone who is not living with HIV. Many services will ask

This month we asked three hair professionals about the salons they inhabit, what they love about working with hair, and their predications for what’ll be in fashion in 2017.

Kristian at Young Turks How long have you been in the hair business? I’ve been in the Barber game for about three and half years. What do you love most about your job? What I love the most is the ability to make someone feel good about themselves when they leave, I’m especially stoked when a young kid is stoked and begs their parent to bring them back again. What do you specialise in? A few things, the main one being fades and I also do a lot of mandala and lotus flower designs that are usually shaved into the back or sides of someone’s head. What’s ‘on trend’ at the moment? At the moment for men, the faded short back and sides, and a heavily choppy, textured top is very popular. As for styling its moved to the more matte finishes and casual styling as opposed to the last trend of the slick and wet look. How would you describe the salon you work in? It’s a very chilled and relaxed space. We wanted to create a place where everyone feels welcome and comfortable, be it young old, male or female. Young Turks: Barbers of Distinction is at 618 Stirling Hwy, Mosman Park www.youngturksbarbers.com.au

Brooke at Musk How long have you been in the hair business? I’ve been in the industry for eleven and half years. What do you love most about your job? I love meeting new people, giving them a new style and making them feel fabulous. What do you specialise in? Personally I specialise in blonde hair but we can do anything! What’s ‘on trend’ at the moment? That’s a tough question! We get such a diverse range of clientele it’s a bit of everything really. How would you describe the salon you work in? We’re all professionals but it’s a very friendly and relaxed environment. We want to make sure everyone feels like they want to come back and see us again. Musk Hair and Body is 1/377 Newcastle Street, Northbridge www.muskhairandbody.com.au

Ron at Hair Boss How long have you been in the hair business? I’ve been in the industry for over 45 years. What do you love most about your job? I love creating all types of hair creations from very low maintenance styling up to those who are up for the hair challenge that says “I have evolved into a Creative Glamourzon”. I love the relationship between the client and my professional approach to hairdressing. What do you specialise in? I specialise in amazing cutting and beautiful blondes. The reality is that great colour comes at a cost. Home hair colouring is obvious, great salon colour is evident in the way it looks and shines. I’m a great stylist, Pivot Point trained, it’s all about the cit. What’s ‘on trend’ at the moment? Trends come and go, I forecast The Flickland soft layers this year. Caramel and LOatte dirty blondes, and bronze chocolate browns for those wanting the colour that shows of a great cut. How would you describe the salon you work in? Hair Boss is designed to be an open space, comfortable clean and relaxing. I love coming to work. We offer a full range of herbal teas and coffee. Hair Boss is at 5/202 Lake Street, Northbridge www.hairboss.com.au

Festival season is once again upon us, and Falls Festival is offering some of the best international musical acts to tour Australia this summer. Nestled in the shady greens of Fremantle, Falls is one of the most comprehensive weekend parties in the country, fully equipped with food trucks & gourmet fare, pop-up bars, beer gardens, interactive arts, markets, yoga classes and even a set from our boy Joel Creasey! In the interest of optimising your Falls experience, we’ve picked out our must-see musical selections from the incredible line-up to recommend to our readers. The Avalanches These Aussie legends kept the world hanging with for almost two decades since their first release, hoping for a second offering from the electro wizards. This year, we were blessed with the release of Wildflower which managed to live up to both critical and personal expectations of the group. Even if you didn’t grow up with Frontier Psychiatrist worming in your ear almost every day, we’d recommend you see them in case they return to hibernation. AlunaGeorge One of the UK’s smoothest exports have been putting out music since 2009, and they are finally getting some hype outside of the motherland. The pair have put out incredible collaborations with Rustie, Disclosure, Baauer, Rae Sremmurd and plenty of their own bangers. With a diverse back catalogue and signature style, AlunaGeorge are certain to put on a show. Jack Garber is a state councillor for Western Australian Council of State School Organisations (WACSSO). He is a lawyer, a father and a president of 2 parents and citizens groups in The South Swan district. Significantly; Jack lobbied for and secured endorsement of the Safe School Coalition from WACSSO when funding was made available to WA Schools. I met Jack at a Save Safe Schools planning meeting where we were notably the oldest people in the room. In a world where grumpy old white men seem intent on letting young LGBTI students fall through the cracks in our school system I have found a friend who confounds assumptions and is a passionate straight ally. Tell me about the first LGBTI person you met. My mum’s hairdresser was a bodybuilder and I was a skinny 13 year old who wanted to put on some muscle. My mum organised for me to go and spend the summer living with him and his partner. We were three men sharing a house and working out together. It was a great summer. I grew up around gay men and women. Considering how long ago that was you could say it was pretty extraordinary. For me this was my normal.

How did you become involved with WACSSO? I joined my children’s Parents and Citizens group when they started school. I ended up being president of the P&C of two schools in the district. Parents have a very important role to play in creating and developing the culture of a school. They can be a powerful force for good in the community. If you are a same sex couple with children or you have a child who is LGBTI then you owe it to your kids to be on the P&C. WACSSO supports such groups with advice and resources to grow healthy safe schools. You have a son who is gay. What was school like for him? It was a very good experience until he came out in year 11. He was part of a group of boys who were lucky enough to qualify for a special program where they learned to fly. It was a very tight knit group. All that fell apart when he came out. He wasn’t beaten up. He was frozen out of the group. These were boys he had spent all high school hanging out with. He couldn’t sit with the group. They refused to talk to him. And because of his previous status there were no other groups willing to let him in. It was disastrous for his schooling. He became anxious, depressed and there were attempts to end his life. Somehow we made it through and he is doing well now. I am very proud of him. Is that why you are so passionate about Safe Schools? Yes. The school leadership really didn’t have the resources or experience to deal with this kind of bullying. Safe schools provides professional development for teachers that would have helped them understand what was happening to my son and to the other boys in the group. Homophobic bullying affects not just the victims but every other boy in the school. The whole school is less safe. You lobbied for WACSSO to endorse Safe Schools. How hard was it to convince people to support the program? It was easy once people actually looked at the resources for themselves and stopped listening to the media beat up that put the ACL and people like George Christenson on the front page. Still it was a struggle. We succeeded with a narrow margin of support. How can parents advocate to have Safe Schools in their local School? First; they have to be involved in the school P&C. Unless you are involved you don’t have a voice. Second; you need to educate yourself about the program so you can counter the rhetoric of people like Peter Abetz who is currently running forums and spreading misinformation to parents in WA. Finally; we need to be persistent in our advocacy. Parents and citizens working together are powerful influencers. If you aren’t a parent but you are a past student you will be welcome to join your P&C group. Many people faced bullying at school. Your story is important. You can make it better for students at your old school by speaking up and supporting leadership to care for other students who are LGBTI in school. Charlie Perth

Tiernan Brady led Ireland’s ‘Yes’ campaign for marriage equality. Now he’s here in Australia as the head of Australians for Equality (A4E), one of the leading organisations fighting for our marriage rights.

it, but because the saw that it mattered to someone that they loved and someone that they knew.”

Tiernan Brady’s been talking about the importance of recognising LGBTI relationships for a long time, and he’s heard every argument against marriage equality.

“What we did in Ireland, and what we want to do here, is to allow LGBTI people in particular to see that ‘you are the most persuasive person in the world that you live in.’ There is nothing that can be said on Q&A that will change hearts and minds as when you talk to your family, your friends, your neighbour, and your work colleagues.” Brady said.

His journey began a decade ago when he took over as the political director of a gay rights group in Ireland and ran a campaign to get civil partnerships for LGBTIQ+ people. While many think Ireland achieved marriage equality through the passionate debates held during their referendum in 2015, Brady said the real milestone came much earlier. “People always think about the last four weeks of a campaign, but really one of the moments we won it was civil partnerships.” Brady said. “Only four members of the parliament voted against it, and at that stage we’d won the principle. The principle was – lesbian and gay relationships need recognition, and once that principle is conceded – the rest is negotiation... I think that was the biggest milestone on the way to the referendum.” Getting people to recognise that LGBTIQ people were among their friends, colleagues and family was one of the Irish campaigns main strategies. “It was always this idea that you tell the truth and remind people that this is someone who lives in your reality. Someone who you work beside. Someone who is in your family. Someone who you sit beside at Christmas dinner. “When people realise that they stop thinking about the issue as a ‘what’ and start thinking about it as a ‘who’, then they become supporters of marriage equality. Once they realise that it’s about someone else.” Brady said. Encouraging allies to speak up was central to the Yes campaign’s success. “To have all those extra voices being heard, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, work colleagues. Explaining why they wanted marriage equality, not because they got anything from

Personal connections and individual stories are what Brady sees as being the lever to finally bring about marriage equality in Australia.

A new TV campaign that Australian For Equality have created alongside Australian Marriage Equality has been designed to help share some very personal stories. The video shows a diverse range of Australians coming together to paint a giant mural for marriage equality. “We’re very conscious that we want to get away from ‘the angry debate’ and get back to human stories. The new ad has all of these people from different walks of life across Australia painting the new logo on a wall. “Each one of those, they’re all real people, none of them are actors. Each one of them has a mini film that comes out about it. The first people to the wall are an Aboriginal couple, a lesbian couple. There’s a mother painting the wall because of her son, then there’s a young man called Ben Davidson who’s painting the wall because of his mothers. He wants them to be able to get married. There’s a granny, a Vietnamese granny who’s painting the wall for her grandson and there’s a Church of England vicar.” Brady said it’s important that marriage debate in Australia gets back to talking about people rather than process following the last few months of debate over the government’s plan for a plebiscite. “It became about process, and we were having arguments about plebiscites and parliamentary procedures and politics, and when we’re doing that were missing what it’s about. Which is your neighbour, your brother, your sister and your aunt.”

In a post plebiscite landscape Brady is confident that there are ways forward that will allow the government the opportunity to address marriage equality in the current term. “We have to find ways forward, there’s lots of potential ways forward it’s about finding the one that makes it happen. I think it would be an awful shame if we had to wait for the next election on something that we already have a majority in parliament in favour of.” “We have to work with politicians and say ‘How can we find a way through this?’” “I think one of the things LGBTIQ people can take great comfort in is that there was a time in this campaign when we were a minority talking about minority rights. It’s not that any more. The campaign is the voice of Australia.” Brady said. Listen to our full conversation with Tiernan Brady on the new episode of OUTinPerth’s podcast So Loquacious. Online Faux-sonas and the Places They Can Take You Faux-sona Definition: the adoption of a misleading digital persona, with the express intention to deceive. This virtual fib is a slithering lie designed to gain access to world’s previously off limits to one’s real world self or allow the user to live their own version of a blue ten foot tall smurf running through the jungles of Pandora. As much as the lines between genders continue to dissolve there is a fundamental truth that in the patriarchal society in which we live, understanding between genders and sexual orientation can get blurry. Whether it is to infiltrate a private Facebook group in the name of corporate espionage or to simply glimpse at a walled off world with no extradition treaties, a faux-sona can allow you to travel to places with a twist in the truth. As a gay man and intrepid reporter of all things digital in the queerverse I sought to gain a fuller understanding of what goes on “behind enemy lines” in the world of lesbian chat rooms.

Eurasian Cuisine - Fully Licenced - Live Music every Friday night in January

Obviously the first hurdle in such a task is to adopt a convincing screen name so on a lazy Sunday afternoon a friend and I decided that ‘Honeypot4u’ would be an appropriate name to gain entry into the lesbian chat-sphere. As is often the case there are a few security questions one must ask before diving in and it is a worrying state of affairs when the secret password is the answer to the question, “How many wings does your tampon have?” Any gay man who has an army of over sharing female best friends knows all too well that no matter how many frequent flow miles he may rack up their not going to give you wings. So to the tune of R.Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly, the pearly gates to the secret garden were opened. What happened from there is probably not that surprising. Once on the other side of the fence the grass was a little greener and the gardeners were wearing a little more flannel than strictly necessary but for all intents and purposes humans were interacting with each other much as they do in “real” life.

I didn’t even find a Lesbian Bunnings Buddy, the most the most informative information I could gather was about which flavored dental dams were the best for “dining out”. Peppermint seems to be a popular choice, maybe i’m old fashioned but I’m more of a strawberry fan myself. Lesson Learned? A faux-sona may have gained me entry into a conversation I was previously barred from but no matter what the forum, human behaviour remains the same and nothing will ever replace actual one on one interaction. David Walliams finds new friends Little Britain star David Walliams has a new sketch comedy show where each week he’s teamed up with a different guest performer, presumably because Matt Lucas was off filming Prior to reading Ah Well, Nobody’s Perfect the only exposure I had to Molly Meldrum in Doctor Who. The series features Joanna Lumley, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Richardson my life was in my early years on Saturday nights when the family gathered around the and other well-known British celebrities. David Walliams and Friend begins airing from T.V. to watch Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and Molly was a regular judge for the Red Faces Wednesday December 21st from 9:10pm. segment. I don’t remember him being especially entertaining as a kid of about eight or nine; Dickie Knee poking fun at Molly always made me laugh, though. NYE with Kylie If you have even the most remote interest in Molly Meldrum or seeing how the Australian Music industry developed in the early days of television and radio media pick up Ah well, nobody’s perfect. Hell, even if you don’t I’d still say check it out. Molly’s memoirs are interspaced with those of celebrities, colleagues, and friends. On all of whom he imparted lasting impressions even if that impression was of fainting and spilling his drink Sense 8 returns on them. I can’t help but wonder how I ever thought the man who once tried to jump a Netflix’s surprise hit Sense8 has revealed a release date for the series’ upcoming second fence and ended up hanging by his pants and crying in front of an EMI executive could be in anyway boring. season, as well as a Christmas special due later this year. Foxtel will air the one hour long special Kiss Me Once that was filmed during Kylie Minogue’s most recent tour. The doco captures Kylie’s tour as they visit Glasgow. Given that the concert was twice the length of this TV presentation, a lot must have been cut out. Tune in to Foxtel Arts on Saturday December 31st from 7:30pm.

The sci-fi drama created by the Wachowski sisters follows a number of LGBTI story arcs, Molly’s memoirs read like life was a horse that was on fire, and he was riding that flaming featuring closeted gay actor Lito Rodriguez and transgender hacker Nomi Marks among the stallion towards a chasm, but rather than turn away he kicked her harder until they were both barrelling at breakneck speed towards what was likely to be their heartbreaking but ensemble of characters. visually glorious demise. However, from what I have since learnt about his life, either The Christmas special will be released on December 23rd, while the second season will be Death didn’t want him or Chance favoured his plucky bravado and usually not only would available from May 5th 2017. he survive, but he’d do so by jumping that chasm in the most spectacular fashion one could on a horse. We hope Delta gets to record all of ONJ’s best songs and we can’t industry for 40 years”, and after reading his latest book, it isn’t hard to see why. It’s clear Molly wasn’t in it for the money; everything he did, he did because he loved the music, wait to see a recreation of Xanadu. the personalities and those he saw that had talent, he wanted to succeed, and he put his all into seeing that happen. BAD SANTA 2 (MA)

Being one of the 15 million people who marvelled at Sergei Polunin’s dancing prowess to Hozier’s Take Me to Church on Youtube, it was interesting to find out more about why the clip was the ballet virtuoso’s farewell performance. This documentary uses home video to track Ukrainian-born Polunin’s progress from the age of eight through to becoming the youngest principal dancer in London’s Royal Ballet. Polunin’s family tell how they split up to earn money to give him a better life and his friends talk about the emotional demons that made him walk away from the Royal Ballet. In between the snatches of balletic brilliance, Polunin speaks honestly about the physical and emotional toll his life of intense training has had and how he hoped he’d get injured so that he wouldn’t have to dance any more. This film gives an even greater appreciation to the closing clip as Polunin dances his soul away.

Estonia was occupied by Germany in World War II and young men were conscripted into the German Army. The Soviets occupied Estonia after the war and men who had served in the German Army were declared ‘enemies of the people’ and sent to hard labour camps. Endel Neils (MärtAvandi) is one of those young men and he flees from Stalin’s Secret Police in Leningrad to become an under-resourced sport teacher in a remote Estonian village. Once an elite fencer, he trains his students in the art of fencing and they insist on going to a competition in Leningrad. Hollywood films often feature underdogs overcoming odds through sporting prowess but this nuanced film, which is based on a true story, is incredible subtle as well as being incredibly memorable. This audience favourite at the Scandinavian Film Festival is beautifully shot, has many haunting layers and never hits the audience over the head.

Cross a human with a robot and you get imagined bioengineered beings that are popular in scifi films. Some are better than others and the bad ones have to be eliminated. With echoes of the 1982 classic Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s son’s first directing attempt is this slow-burning sci-fi thriller. Morgan (Anya TaylorJoy) is chronologically a five year old droid that has the potential to be a psychopathic killer. Corporate trouble-shooter Lee Weathers (Kate Mara) is sent to investigate the droid, and possibly terminate it, after one of the staff at the remote facility housing Morgan was attacked. The increasingly human Morgan is quite enticing and staff at the facility who have invested eight years on the project are reluctant to terminate Morgan. Visually, the film is a treat and the acting is fantastic as well, even though the characters are somewhat stereotypical. The biggest let-down is the predictability of the plot. .

Following 2003’s Bad Santa, the alcoholic loser Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) and his diminutive partner in crime Marcus (Tony Cox) are again donning the Santa and elf outfits. With the help of Willie’s foul-mouthed mother Sunny (Kathy Bates who is only 7 years older than Thornton), they plan to rob a homeless charity in Chicago on Christmas Eve. While its predecessor’s humour was subversively entertaining, this film has nothing to redeem itself. Christina Hendricks tries to add a bit of sparkle and smatterings of Christmas music try to jolly the audience. Unfortunately the miniscule plot and overbearing crassness of the every piece of dialogue is fatiguing. I don’t mind crude, rude or even vulgar humour but I do mind degrading, insulting and repetitive banality. Obliterating any favourable memories Billy Bob Thornton’s Santa outing thirteen years ago, this is one film to leave off your Christmas list.

If you’re looking for a lean, muscular model physique, it might be time to ditch the heavy weights and excessive equipment and take up a calisthenics program. Forget ribbon twirling and rhythmic gymnastics, calisthenics is a hardcore workout that teaches you to defy gravity while sculpting out muscles you did not even know you had. Breaking down the word itself, Calisthenics translates to ‘beautiful strength’. It’s literally just you working with the bars and rings to create the ultimate combination of bodyweight strength and control. Calisthenics is easily one of the most humbling work outs you can do; there’s absolutely no room to cheat reps or get slack on your technique. You can only work at your own pace and aim to master your progression. When I walked into Movement Co in Osborne Park I was met with an array of bars, rings and rock-climbing walls; essentially I felt like I’d stepped into an adults playground. And that’s totally okay with me! Movement Co is a mixed movement space that offers classes in calisthenics, gymnastics, handstands, parkour, climbing, strength and more.

How do you define the queer community, LGBTIQQOPPAA+ is just too confusing, we need to rethink how we label queerness. How about a periodic table approach?

As I started the class, head coach Jason Ahipene explained that basic calisthenics begins with bodyweight exercises like push-ups, chin-ups and pull-ups. Once you’ve conquered those, you progress into the harder skills like muscle-ups, planche, levers and human flags. But believe me, those exercises are no way near as easy as Jason demonstrates. It takes months, even years to build up the strength to achieve a muscle-up or human flag, so don’t be discouraged when you don’t get something straight away. Calisthenics doesn’t discriminate between gender, both men and women can absolutely nail the progressions. If you’re looking for an incredibly rewarding challenge or something a little bit different, give calisthenics a go. But PSA: it’s addictive. Once you’ve mastered one progression you’ll be chomping at the bit to tackle the next one. And that’s the beauty of it, there’s no real end game but only endless opportunities to learn and better yourself. Take it up for a challenge; but go slow because your muscles will be sore! The Japanese House – Good Side In the way the subtle guitars, electronic beats and forthright vocals mix together is fresh and catchy Jorja Smith – Imperfect Circle impeccable RnB from a singer who has an amazing voice Cabbage – These Boots Are Made For Walking because you need a punk rock version of this song Eat Fast – Public Display of Affection it’s a big loud throbbing slab of a tune Etta Bond and Chris Loco – All of My Love spacious, chilled out, and smooth Kadhja Bonet – Honeycomb luscious and rich psychedelic soul Girls Like Kai featuring Kodi Shane, Mystic Davis and Denyque – Body on You we have no idea what they are rapping about The Cinematic Orchestra featuring Moses Sumney – To Believe back after a 5 year hiatus, this is a stunningly beautiful song Nadia Rose – Skwod as in ‘hanging with my skwod’- use it in a sentence Ricky Eat Acid – Fucking to Songs on Radios it’s like it’s been put through blender and melted slightly Charles J – Do You Want this rework of an ABBA classic will either get you on the dance floor or drive you crazy with its cut n paste vocals

Alicia Keys Here Here is Alicia Keys highly anticipated sixth album and it’s a honeypot for the ears. Colliding the sounds, tastes and people of New York City with a spiritual cornucopia of the RnB, hip-hop and soul movements and its intrinsic link to the civil rights movement and #blacklivesmatter. Like an old time, LP Keys paints an overarching story documenting the many stories of the lives of African-Americans, their politics, selfworth and spiritual alignment through the genius and poetry of these smooth and unflinching words handed down by centuries of black lives. Kyle Kash

Psychemagik Ritual Chants The crate digging wonders have put together a 3 CD compilation of long lost gems which is available as single albums or a 40 track compilation. Things start off slowly with a collection of psychedelic slow disco jams that scream “‘70s porn soundtrack”, the second disc picks up with funky jams like Lipstick (Shout) from J.M Black and Minako Yoshida ‘s Black Moon. The final disco is all about the dance floor with stellar cuts like Shapiro’s electro hip hop Dance Drome and Will to Power’s acid house tinged Say It’s Going to Rain. The epic journey closes with a Swedish version of America’s Horse With No Name. PERTH THEATRE TRUST and RTRFM PRESENT

Heiðrik Funeral Hailing from the Faroe Islands, Heiðrik now lives in Iceland and this album of romantic folk tunes is quite divine. One of the highlights is the stunning Red Hair which features a swirling orchestral arrangement, plucked guitar and a delicious vocal. Short and precise most of the tracks clock in at just two to three minutes each and each is filled with drama. The heart breaking Boy is a ballad about the death of a child, while other tunes explore what it was like growing up gay in a remote community. Comparisons to other singers like Amohni and Jeff Buckley are spot on. Graeme Watson

Prinze George Illiterate Syth Pop The lead single Wait Up is a massive soaring cinematic epic and sets high expectations for the rest of the album. The Brooklyn based trio don’t disappoint though with this album of dreamy retro pop. Featuring sweet vocals from Naomi Almquist, this is band you’ll love if you dig Cocteau Twins, M83, Chvurches or Broods. The pace never gets above a mid-tempo but the bands utilizes a range of intriguing electronic sounds and beats. The Water Main recalls some classic ‘80s electronica, This Time builds into a dance inspiring experience, while closing track Light Burs Out is the perfect album close. Graeme Watson
