culture In addition to having a Facebook presence, the group has started holding activities and hopes to expand the list of activities.

Bisexual icon Alan Cumming will be performing in Perth for the first time next month. Thanks to the increasing profile of Cumming and other celebrities who identify as bisexual or bi+, bisexuality has become more visible and validated as a sexual orientation. As a result, an increasing number of people are coming out as bi+ or as simply neither straight nor gay. A new bi+ group has been set up to accommodate the local bi+ community. We spoke to the four coordinators of Bisexual+ Community Perth about their group. Group founder Misty Farquhar said that the general and LGBTI/queer community is coming to terms with bisexuality. Even so, acceptance has been slow. “Bi+ people still face considerable prejudice and misunderstanding not just from the general community but also from lesbians and gay men,” they said. “I recently saw a prominent – and otherwise awesome – queer performer make fun of bisexuals after asking us to identify ourselves as part of their show. It may have seemed like a harmless joke, but this type of thing can really make us feel like we’re not welcome in queer spaces.

“We encourage anyone in the multi-attracted vortex to join our online community,” said Hen. “When they feel ready, we also hope they will show up in real life to meet other bi+ people in Perth. We are friendly humans.” They said that the group hopes to march as a group at the Pride Parade later this year.

“I spent a long time trying to find a place to connect with people like me but couldn’t find anything.” So Misty started their own group. “It’s a Facebook group where bi+ people can chat and connect with other bi+ people in Perth without being harassed by people looking to hook-up.” Duc, another coordinator, added that recent statistics from the US indicate that bisexuals make up at least half of the LGBTI/queer community. “However, despite the fact that bisexuals face stigma and worse health and mental health outcomes than heterosexuals, lesbians and gays, there are few programs dedicated to us,” she said.

“We want to show to the people of Perth that there is a B in the LGBTI community.” Sam noted that the group is open to bi+ people regardless of gender identity or who they are or are not partnered with.

This is one of the reasons why in 2014 she and two colleagues established a bisexual network at her workplace, UWA. “UWA BTW (Bi the Way) is the first university network in Australia to connect bi+ students, staff and alumni. We’re not a counselling group, but we offer a sense of belonging, which can make a big difference if you’re feeling isolated.” She believes that her involvement with Bisexual+ Community Perth is an extension of her work at UWA.

“Wherever you sit on the bisexual spectrum, we want the group to be an opportunity for us to come together and celebrate our uniqueness in the community.” “So join our group, and if you’re keen later in the year, march with us at the Pride Parade.” You can join the Bisexual+ Community Perth group by searching on Facebook or going directly to www.facebook. com/groups/bicommperth Their next event will be a 10.30am brunch on May 21 at Henry on Eighth, Maylands.

Q: I’m in an open relationship and recently my boyfriend and i had a threesome… How do I break it to my partner that the other guy was better at sex that him? A: My favourite way to break ties with people is by sending them a handwritten letter usually letting them know I’ve joined the witness protection program in South Africa and my name is Maria now. Also keep in mind - sex isn’t everything - his bank account is!

inside out

Looking to the future The media landscape has been changing for many years, and the business model which funded journalism for decades is quickly falling away. Fairfax Media have recently announced a plan to shed 25% of the journalists in their workforce, advertising revenue in Australia’s media industry has dropped on average of around 14% a year, and clickbait stories and listicles have replaced traditional content. The media has been eroded by social media and the future for all news reporting is bleak. OUTinPerth is not immune to these changes, in fact we probably feel them more severely than large media organisations. Slowly we’re changing the way we operate to develop more diverse ways of funding our operations. Currently we have a crowdfunding campaign to revitalise OUTinPerth. Over the last year 150 people have generously contributed to assisting us to replace essential equipment and resources.

OUTinPerth has always been a community focussed publication, the vast majority of our stories are generated from your inquiries and suggestions. While we’ve always been approachable by phone, email and in person, we’ve also launched a new feedback mechanism to allow us to be even more responsive to your needs.

Perth councils voice support for marriage equality Two Perth councils have voiced their support for marriage equality. On April 26th both the Fremantle City Council and the representatives at the City of Bayswater passed motions calling on the federal government to allow a free vote on the issue.

Forty six Australian councils have now shown support for marriage equality, but only four are in Western Australia. Vincent and Port Hedland are the other two local government bodies who have passed similar motions.

The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has stepped up its local campaign against the Safe Schools Coalition. The anti bullying program’s federal funding ends next month, but the McGowan Labor government has vowed to provide new funding at a state level.

While the motion was passed unanimously in Fremantle, Bayswater council debated the issues with some councillors arguing that the issue was not the responsibility of local government.

New Initiative Seeks To Strengthen Community A new initiative as emerged among the Australian LGBTIQ community that takes a different approach to advocacy that its contemporaries. While other groups aim to lobby outsiders than to support LGBTIQ rights and equality, The Equality Project aims to promote inclusivity and togetherness within the community, for everyone who falls under the rainbow umbrella. Veteran LGBTIQ activist and co-founder of The Equality Project, Jason Tuazon-McCheyne, tells OUTinPerth the initiative is a call-back to the grassroots activism of days gone by. “The Equality Project started as a conversation last September and its aim is to work towards a world that affirms and recognises LGBTIQ persons as equal citizens,” TuazonMcCheyne says. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s there used to be a national homosexual conference… and we thinks it’s time for us to come back and have a national LGBTIQ conference. So every two years we’re going to have a conference that we call Better Together, which will have a strong Indigenous, feminist,

Messiha said that because LGBTI youth were a tiny minority, the actual number of students being bullied was very low. “Children are bullied for a number of reasons but gender and sexuality rates very low just because of the percentage of children that it actually affects.” Messiha said.

“We want to bring visibility to all aspects of the community, so that includes all of L-G-B-T-I, as well as the Indigenous community, people with disabilities etc… “We will also provide opportunities to form new relationships and tell stories, as well as opportunities for education and to promote equity where it’s needed.” The Better Together conference will also give people the opportunity to undergo leadership training to help proliferate the message of togetherness among the diasporic LGBTIQ community.

“Instead of that money being used to create better academic programs, you’re now spending however long in a classroom with all the children learning about theories, that are just theories, at the end of the day.” Messiha said.

Tuazon-McCheyne says the group has a five-pronged approach to ensuring minorities within the LGBTIQ community are heard, amplified and understood by their peers.

Pride WA’s new committee of management have asked people to lock in Friday 27th October to Saturday 25th of November for a four week long celebration of queer culture.

Critics continue to campaign for the removal of Safe Schools

Messiha said a more inclusive approach needs to be taken towards tackling bullying so that all types of bullying were covered. Save Safe Schools, a grassroots community group who advocate for the importance of the program, responded to the ACL’s comments. Spokesperson OScar Kaspi-Crutchett said the statements made by the Australian Christian Lobby failed to recognise the experiences of LGBT youth. “By playing down the widespread and often indescribable suffering of LGBT students in Australia, because we only form the minority, she is doing us all a great injustice. “Homophobic and transphobic bullying is a real issue for so many, we need a specialised program to combat it.” Kaspi-Crutchett said. The Save Safe Schools WA group said combating false information or ignorance about the program is one of the greatest challenges they face. “Misunderstanding of the objectives and practices of the Safe Schools Program forms a real problem in our advocacy. “Many individuals in the wider community have a limited understanding of the program and perceive it as fringe or even extremist. Newly appointed Education Minister Sue Ellery told OUTinPerth the McGowan government remained committed to funding the program.

world Malaysian political groups split over Selena Gomez MALAYSIA Two conservative Muslim political groups in Malaysia have fallen out because they have differing opinions on pop star Selena Gomez. The youth faction of The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has publicly criticised the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) for not doing more to oppose a concert held by the pop singer in 2016. The party’s younger members have declared the difference of opinion if enough for the two groups to stop working together and put forward a motion to end their political alliance.

Russia arrests protesters highlighting the plight of Chechen gay men RUSSIA

A gay couple in Hong Kong have won a landmark court case. Hong Kong’s courts ruled that the government had discriminated against Senior Immigration Officer Leung Chun-kwong when they told him his husband would not be entitled to any of his partner benefits. Leung married his partner Scott Adams in New Zealand in 2014. The judge said there was nothing illegal or unlawful for the secretary to recognise or give spousal benefits to homosexual couples legally married under foreign laws

A group of around ten protesters were arrested in St Petersburg on 2nd May. The protesters were highlighting reports of gay men being detained, tortured and killed in the Chechen Republic. The protesters painted their faces with red paint and lay in the street during a May Day parade to make their point. A group of eight men have been arrested in the Indonesian city of Surabaya for taking part in that police described as a ‘gay party’. Police allege the men were found with condoms and lubrication and some were watching pornography. While homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, pornography is outlawed. Human Rights advocates have expressed alarm that the men were forced to undergo tests for HIV. The two men who allegedly organised the party face potential jail terms of 8 years.

Sarah Opendi, Uganda’s Health Minister is outraged after she discovered money from foreign aid was being used to supply lubricant and condoms. Opendi told a local newspaper that she believed the government should not be seen to condoning homosexuality and that money from the Global Health Fund should be directed to stopping Malaria, not tackling the country’s HIV epidemic. Homosexuality is illegal in Uganda and is punishable by a life prison sentence. Sex between men is one of the leading contributors to the nation’s HIV challenge

Bermuda’s Supreme Court has ruled in favour of marriage equality and the nation’s gay couples will now be allowed to tie the knot. In a landmark case, Judge Charles Etta-Simmons ruled that Winston Godwin and fiancé Greg DeRoche had been discriminated against and should be allowed to marry under the country’s Human Rights Act. Government lawyers had unsuccessfully argued that marriage could only be between a man and a woman.

Broadway star and newly minted RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Todrick Hall is heading to Australia with his Straight Outta Oz tour this June. The American Idol finalist has put his own twist on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with over 20 original songs. Hall’s version tells the story of his adventure from small town Texas to the glamorous Oz Angeles; dodging falling houses, wicked witches and the Poppyrazzi. Speaking with OUTinPerth, Hall says his affinity for Dorothy’s tale stems from growing p gay and black in a backwards country town. “Growing up in Texas I felt a lot like Dorothy.” Hall says there are a lot of parallels between himself and the protagonist of the camp classic. “I had to try really hard not to come off as an aggressive black man just to get by, and I was inspired by Dorothy’s ability to reflect other people’s anger.” From the wonderful world of Oz to the world wide web, Hall has made a name for himself as a master of homage and parody online. His series of Disney inspired original music videos have garnered millions of views.

“It was an organic transition from singing to making my videos,” Hall said. “I have always loved Broadway to it was an easy transition from singing to creating these full productions.” Hall says he never expected his stint on American Idol would lead him to collaborate with his personal heroes like Nicole Scherzinger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the one and only RuPaul. “I’ve always loved Nicole’s style and working with her was a dream come true,” Hall continued. “I never imagined when I auditioned for Idol i’d be working with named like JGL, Wayne Brady and RuPaul!” Besides sharing the judging panel on RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul most recently collaborated with Hall on his track Low which appears on the Straight Outta Oz visual album. Hall said his main goal for the album and the stage show was to create an Oz experience contemporary audiences could enjoy without being hardcore fans of the original. “It’s not a one man show! We’re bringing about 150 costumes, 15 performers and there are over 20 numbers so it’s a big production.”

Though his heart will always belong to The Wizard of Oz, when asked what other texts he’d like to give the ‘Todrick treatment’ he had a few ideas. “I’d really love to work with Brandy! I’m just going to put that out into the universe with you,” he laughed. “I do really love Cinderella, but I think if I did something else like Straight Outta Oz I’d do Alice In Wonderland, but much grander.” Straight Outta Oz will be at The Astor Theatre on Thursday June 1st. Alan Cumming is heading to Perth to sing some sappy songs and while he’s in town he’s got a mission to complete. The label ‘multi-talented’ is one that fits Alan Cumming well. He’s an acclaimed actor, appearing in films and television shows, ranging from Bond films to TV’s The Good Wife. He’s a musical theatre and stage star. He’s published several books including a memoir, a novel, and a nonfiction book about circumcision. He’s a political activist and he’s getting ready to open his own bar. Next month Cumming will make his first trip to Perth, and it’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time. “I was making a film in Sydney once and I really wanted to go to Perth and take that train trip across the country. I love a long train journey, and I love the fact that they say you’ll see desert for days and the suddenly the appearance of a tree will cause everyone to wake up, and even in their pyjamas they’ll want to see the tree. I think that’s hilarious.” Cumming said when he called OUTinPerth for a chat. While his tight touring schedule won’t allow the luxury of a train journey journey, he will be flying into town to deliver his show Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs. We suggest that sappy is a word that doesn’t off get used, and Cumming leaps to defend the choice. “I like it, I think it’s a great word.” “The reason that I called the show that is because I wanted to signal both that it’s going to be emotional, and personal, and intimate. “It’s pretty intense, but also there’s humour in it. I didn’t say ‘sad songs’ because I think people recognise that there’s a little bit of fun attached to it as well. I really like the word sappy.” Cumming says since he first started taking the show around the world it has evolved a little bit. “It has a structure, but there’s bit’s where I chat about what I’ve been doing that day or anything that needs to be addressed. It’s not just me singing a bunch of songs.” One of the other projects Cumming is currently working on is the opening of Club Cumming in New York later this year. A few years ago he began doing impromptu shows in his dressing room called Club Cumming, now the concept is about to get a permanent home. “It’s happening in the middle of September, it’s going to be fun. It’s a bar called Eastern Bloc, it’s more a bar than a club. It’s called Club Cumming because the parties that I do are called Club Cumming.”

“So we’re taking the spirit of those parties and putting them into a bar. It’s a bar in the East Village, that I really love and we’re buying into it and giving it a bit of a makeover, it’s going to be fun.” Cumming said that there will be times patrons might find him sitting at the end of the bar, but he’s also planning to do occasional shows and DJ sets at the venue. “I’ll be in the bar, I’ll be DJing sometimes. I’m obviously not going to be there every night but my spirit is definitely going to be infusing, if not my presence.” While Cumming is now at home in New York where he’s a regular fixture on Broadway and in the cities many underground performance venues. He didn’t imagine living in The Big Apple is where he’s end up. “Not at all. I didn’t even come to America until I was thirty. I had no aspirations about coming here and working here. I didn’t even come here for a vacation. I first came when I was thirty, and it was for work.” “Its funny how my life has turned out, when I left drama school I thought maybe one day I might move to London. Stuff just sort of happens and you find yourself here.” “I love New York, it’s great. America is kind of an insane place right now. New York always feels like a little island of liberalism just off the coast of America, which it is.” Being an international star of screen and stage is a long way from where Cumming’s life began in Aberfeldy in the Scottish Highlands. He shared what his difficult upbringing was like in his memoir Not My Father’s Son. The book recounts Cumming meeting his father after a decades of estrangement, just as he’s about to film an episode of the TV show Who Do You Think You Are? While the subject matter of the book is quite dark, he said it was a cathartic experience to share it with the world.

a really great way to stand back from your life, and share it with other people, but also remember how nuts it is, in both good ways and bad ways.” Since then Cumming has authored a second book of stories and photographs called You’ve Gotta Get Bigger Dreams, and he’s currently working on another book which chronicles his early days as an actor and his move to America. “I think I’ve had an incredible life.” he said, describing his journey to where he is now in life as a wild adventure, but he’s very happy with where he now is in his personal and professional life. “There’s been lots of relationships, and a lot of crazy things, and I’ve managed to overcome things and survive and be happy. The older I get the more I realise that that’s actually very rare and people need to hear that story sometimes.” Cumming reveals that when he gets to Perth the one mission on his itinerary is heading to Rottnest Island to see the quokas. “My band are quite obsessed with quokkas, my chellist has a picture of one as the screensaver on her phone.” We assure him that it’s quite easy to see a quoka on a trip to Rottnest, in fact recently there’s been a population explosion on the island and a fence has had to be erected to stop quokkas getting onto the island’s golf course. “It’s going to be like Trump’s America, where people turn against the quokkas!” Cumming laughs at the suggestion of a giant fence to keep the marsupials out. “It was very much dictated by the events of doing Who Do You Think You Are? And my Dad coming out of the woodwork, that’s what spurred me to write that book.” Cumming said. “It was something I had to write to expunge that whole experience. “I actually really like writing about my life. Not My Father’s Son was intense because it was about my childhood, it was full of violence and intense things, but actually it’s

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia: IDAHOBIT (Encompassing the diversity of LGBTIQ+ bodies, genders, relationships, sexualities, attractions, identities and experiences) is observed each May 17th and aims to promote events that raise awareness of LGBTIQ+ rights. Events take place in over 120 countries, in all world regions. The founders of IDAHOBIT (originally known as the International Day Against Homophobia) established the day to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation in 1990. One of the stated goals of May 17 is to create an event that can be visible at a global level, while allowing LGBTIQ+ people and their allies to contribute activities that are specific to a local level. This takes into account the diversity of social, religious, cultural, and political contexts in which human rights violations against LGBTIQ+ people occur and can make sure that the messages that are communicated during IDAHOBIT are most relevant to the people that live in that specific context. Statistics consistently show that LGBTIQ+ people have significantly more mental health and wellbeing concerns than that of than those of their non LGBTIQ+ peers, much of this being due to institutional, cultural, interpersonal and internal homo/bi/trans phobia. A day like IDAHOBIT shines a light on the damage that misinformation and harmful attitudes can cause and it reinforces why it is so important to keep LGBTIQ+ rights on the agenda. For me, IDAHOBIT is also about highlighting and celebrating the fierce resilience that LGBTIQ+ people possess in spite of all of this. Time I can take to pay respects to those activists, change makers and amazing humans that came before me. People who fought for the right to simply exist as their authentic selves. This IDAHOBIT in particular, I believe it is also important for those of us who can be visible to be, in a show of solidarity for LGBTIQ+ people who are living with even less rights than what Australian LGBTIQ+ people have. While the rainbow human rights tally still has a way to go here - especially for Intersex, Transgender and Bi/ Pan rights and People from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, CALD backgrounds, People with disability and People whose intersectionality increases the complexity of the barriers they are faced with in lifeIDAHOBIT can be a time to use any personal privilege you have, to stand up for those who can’t. So how can you be a part of IDAHOBIT? * Check out local LGBTIQ+ groups and services to see if

they are running any events or awareness raising activities (the community listing at the back of O.I.P is a place to start) * Make time to examine and challenge our own internalised homo/bi/trans phobia. What do we need to learn so we can be an even better ally to the letters of the alphabet soup that we don’t identify as? * Encourage our wonderful allies to find out more and to support local initiatives that work to fight for equality * Give thanks to an LGBTIQ+ elder and spend time learning form their stories and experiences Acknowledging and celebrating IDAHOBIT is one step forward in strengthening the human rights for everyone regardless of their sex, sexuality or gender identity. On May 17th I am proud to stand with all LGBTIQ+ people across the world and be counted. Bella Broadway

Despite the significance of this day, there are still countless people suffering through acts of bi-erasure. I’ve been lucky in that the majority of reactions I’ve received from family and friends have been reasonably positive. However this is not always the case, most people seem to react one of two ways: they either think that bi+ people don’t exist or they try to make us conform to their stereotypical idea of what we should be. To confront those who commit acts of bi-erasure by invalidating their bisexual or bi+ peers, there are a few points that should be addressed: 1. Bisexual people are real and valid and we have feelings. 2. Bisexuals are not simply ‘greedy or ‘indecisive’ or ‘confused’ or ‘experimenting’. 3. The misconceptions of others about our sexuality can be incredibly offensive, hurtful and detrimental to our wellbeing. Bisexuality is not a label that we give ourselves for your benefit, it’s not something that we chose to be, it’s who we are. Bi-erasure is still very present in modern society; there’s a distinct lack of representation of bi+ characters in the media, we’re often stereotyped, stigmatised or simply ignored because ‘hey bisexuality isn’t real’.

For those of you who don’t know, May 17th is ‘International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia’ or ‘IDAHOBIT Day’. For most people in the LGBT+ community, days like this represent a chance to spread awareness to educate others and to just be themselves. However many bi+ people, myself included, days like these can be a reminder that even in 2017 many people still do not recognise our sexuality as being valid. Whether by family and friends, society at large or, most shockingly, by other members of the LGBT+ community; bisexuals or bi+ people are often made to feel invalid, inferior or invisible. In 2004, the date of May 17th was chosen to establish this day of recognition due to its significance within the LGBT+ community, as it is the anniversary of the day the World Health Organisation declared that homosexuality was no longer considered a mental disorder back in 1990. Sounds like something worth celebrating, right? But only if you get invited to the party. Back in 2004 this day was entitled ‘International Day Against Homophobia’ or ‘IDAHO’. In 2009 Transphobia was added making it ‘IDAHOT’ but it wasn’t until 2015 that the acronym was extended to include Biphobia and it became known as ‘IDAHOBIT’.

Being treated as though your sexual orientation, your sexual identity, does not exist or being called out by people you know and those you don’t for being dirty, greedy, indecisive, promiscuous or slutty is not an enjoyable experience. Many people attribute how I identify myself as being merely a passing phase, like I’m just experimenting and they expect me to eventually marry a man. Okay yeah, maybe one day I’ll marry a man, but I won’t be doing it because I’m straight, I’ll still be bi. Bisexuality doesn’t just go away based on who you date, it’s a part of who you are. In conclusion, I hope that I’ve been able to educate you a little on the issue of bi-erasure and its impact on the bi+ community as well as giving you an idea of what it means to experience bi-erasure. There’s still a long road ahead but, as someone who’s experienced bi-erasure first hand, I believe that it’s important to continually challenge the stigmas associated with bisexuality and I know we’ll get there in the end. May 22nd marks a special day in the heart of the LGBTI+ community thanks to avid champions within our ranks, such as Daren I. Ball and the creator of When We Rise and Milk Dustin Lance Black, shedding light on official recognition and civil rights progress established by the queer movement.

These people, among many unnamed paved the way to the life we can enjoy now, and endured, or died, through a battle that has lasted decades when queer people just said enough is enough, and they took action to fight back against a system that would not allow them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is no wonder that the surviving leaders of our community urge our generations to stay informed about our history, and to continue fighting, and a day of recognition is the start of that.

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person elected to office in California and sadly he and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by another elected official, Dan White, on November 27th 1978. Their murderer getting off on a lighter sentence due to his lawyers using what has come to be known as ‘the twinkie defence’ arguing White suffered mental health issues due to a poor diet. For many, this was a scape goat for the murdering of a publicly and well-functioning out gay man. Harvey Milk Day not only commemorates Harvey Milk though, alongside him many activists towards the freedoms of LGBTI+ people stand prevalent, for example, Cleve Jones and the AIDS Quilt, Larry Kramer and ACT UP, Sylvia Rivera of the Stonewall riots, Gilbert Baker whom created our Rainbow flag, Del Martin co-founder of the

In a recent interview sparked by the release of When We Rise Cleve Jones was asked about San Francisco and the Castro District from whence many of our global LGBTI+ rights were ignited, and he feared that with gentrification pushing marginalised people out of our oasis’s and the internal diminishing of geographical places for LGBTI+ people with the rise of online communities we would lose our safe spaces when the shit hits the fan, and with the rise of Trump and Pence, and other politicians that degrade and reduce the queer experience to a mere lifestyle that is perverted we very much are in need of places where we can come together and just be us.

You may be wondering how that affects Australians in Perth, the opposite side of the world, we are united through our diversity and acceptance, but this Harvey Milk Day I would urge you all to consider how important it is to have spaces like The Freedom Centre, Connections Nightclub, The Court Hotel and our very own magazine OUTinPerth. As Harvey Milk wanted it, we have the ability to be out of the closet, and in that we are free. “I know that you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you…and you…and you… Gotta give them hope” – Harvey Milk Kyle Kash

34 years ago the first safe sex booklet, “How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach”, was produced and 5000 copies of the forty-page booklet disseminated through New York City in response to the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The authors, Richard Berkowitz and Michael Callen, were both living with AIDS (they were also part of the first wave of activism of people living with HIV/AIDS, forming the Denver Principles), the former self-described as a ‘hustler’ specialising in leather-bound dominating sadomasochism, and the latter a bathhouse bottom. The two met through their doctor, Joseph Sonnabend, in Greenwich village, and the trio worked together to produce a number of articles, leading up to the safe sex booklet. Sonnabend believed that AIDS was caused by multiple concurrent factors which depleted the immune system, particularly the transmission of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) – he was against the viral theory beginning to emerge to explain AIDS – what would become known as HIV in 1986 (previously known as HTLV-III/LAV in 1984) While history would prove the trio wrong in their explanation of AIDS, the prevention advice they disseminated through advising condom usage and non-penetrative sexual activity as ways of preventing CMV transmission would become the cornerstone of HIV prevention. Proponents of the viral theory in the early-mid 1980s were uncertain about what bodily fluids HIV was contained in, and all they knew was that sexual transmission and injecting drug usage were definite factors. The only advice they could offer was to avoid sex or be monogamous, and neither of these options were particularly appealing to the gay community. Berkowitz and Callen were able to provide systematic advice for almost every sexual act and scenario you could

think of – sucking and being sucked, topping, bottoming, rimming, water sports, sex toys, sex work (and buying sex), fisting, mutual masturbation, going to saunas and other sex on premise venues, sadomasochism, using amyl nitrates (‘poppers’), kissing, anonymous/casual sex, and sex while living with AIDS. Instead of offering abstinence or partner reduction/monogamy, which most other health professionals and gay leaders offered at the time, Berkowitz and Callen radically suggested the adoption of alternative protective techniques and behaviours to gay men’s existing sexual mores in order to reduce the epidemic.

– with the exception of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, Postexposure Prophylaxis, and Treatment as Prevention (or Undetectable Viral Load). Most powerfully, at the end of the booklet, Berkowitz and Callen lament that they have talked about sex for 40 pages without mentioning the word ‘love’. Radically, they argue that as men we are socialised into competing with and consuming one another, and they offer a revolutionary point – “If you love the person you are fucking with—even for one night—you will not want to make them sick.” While much has changed in 34 years of HIV/AIDS, there’s a radical spirit to “How to Have Sex in an Epidemic” that we (the gay community) could tap into.

Importantly, they also stressed that ‘partner reduction’ (i.e. “stop being so promiscuous!”) on its own would not protect a person, as the partner/s they limit themselves to might already be exposed. The booklet can best be summarised,

Anthony K J Smith

“As you read on, we hope we make at least one point clear: Sex doesn’t make you sick – diseases do. Gay sex doesn’t make you sick – gay men who are sick do. Once you understand how diseases are transmitted, you can begin to explore medically safe sex. Our challenge is to figure out how we can have gay, life-affirming sex, satisfy our emotional needs, and stay alive!” If we changed ‘CMV’ to ‘HIV’, and removed urine and saliva as transmissible body fluids, the advice they offer us would still be as relevant to HIV prevention today

7 Questions about penis augmentation Injectable dermal fillers is a procedure that’s growing in popularity, allowing men to add a little more girth to their manhood. Unlike surgical options, this procedure can be completed in an hour and has a short recovery time. It’s something you could get done on a long lunch break. Dr Jayson Oates answers the questions most of us want to ask about Calibre’s penis augmentation procedure. Will people be able to tell if you’ve had it done? The whole idea is to make it natural and undetectable. Somebody might notice a change if they’ve seen the before and after, but most people can’t tell by looking or feeling. How much bigger will it be? Well that depends on how much you put in, and how big you were to start. Most guys will get around an inch in circumference when flaccid. When you have an erection, it stretches out a bit, and you gain about half an inch. It’s not designed to create length, but guys find that because it’s heavier, and hanging out further, they get less shrinkage.

How long does it last for? The guys who first had this procedure are now getting to the two-year stage and they haven’t had a lot of loss of volume. You get the occasional guy, especially professional athletes where we find that hyaluronic acid breaks down more quickly. In those cases, we’re trialling some new products to see if they last longer. Will my penis still work the same? The whole idea is that it looks normal, it feels normal, and it functions totally normal. It’s just bigger. Does it hurt to have the procedure? It’s amazing how numb we can get it just with local anaesthetic cream. It varies from guy to guy, everyone has a different pain threshold some have a few little twinges, but the vast majority of guys at the end of the procedure say, ‘Wow, that was a lot better than what I was expecting.’

Does it make a difference if you’re circumcised or uncircumcised? Technically it’s a bit easier to do on guys who are uncircumcised, but most younger guys are uncut, it doesn’t make a huge difference. How popular has this procedure been? Since we first began offering this procedure there’s been a gradual uptake. The challenge is most people haven’t heard about it, and everybody knows that all the stuff you see on the internet about making your penis bigger is all just scams. Slowly more people are learning that this a real medical procedure that does make a significant difference. Find out more about Calibre at www.calibreclinic.com.au

Australian icon Tina Arena has returned home to celebrate four incredible decades of making some of our nation’s most recognisable tunes. From Young Talent Time to the ARIA Hall Of Fame, Arena has fought off the chains of stagnation and set fire to our lives with pop hits and earth-shattering performances that remind us why she’s still in the zeitgeist after all these years. Having just released her second singles compilation, Greatest Hits & Interpretations, Arena caught up with OUTinPerth for a chat about her longevity and to tell us what to expect from her upcoming tour. What are some of your favourite moments from the last 40 years? My God! There’s so many moments between Australia and Europe, and even some experiences in the United States. Highlights for me include opening the Olympic Games, receiving an ARIA for Album of the Year and being the first female to receive that, being an AM, being decorated at the beginning of last year… being decorated by the French as well! It’s monumental things like that that make you go ‘Wow! What an amazing 40 years!”

You were the first Australian to receive the Order of National Merit in France, but that wasn’t your only honour in their country. I heard you were on France’s version of The Muppets!

Some people may not know you have an enormous following in France, and you’ve performed a number of songs in French including Blondie’s Call Me. Are there any other hits in English you’d like to translate?

I was! I made it to the French version of The Muppets! That’s making it! I grew up with that show, that show is monumental. It’s my era. It was so incredibly ahead of its time.

I’m not sure! Lots of stuff gets lost in translation because the song can never be literally adapted. What I may sing and write about in English doesn’t necessarily translate into French so you have to find a different theme and change the way you sing the sonorities… it’s so different.

We’ve been listening to your second Greatest Hits compilation, which takes us all the way through your career. Were there any songs that didn’t make the album that hold a special place in your heart? There are different periods in a career where things change and happen musically, and there are songs that you as the artist may be really into and the record company doesn’t really see the same commercial viability. You’re not always on the same page. There are always going to be singles that you want to have a life but they just don’t! Alongside your personal versions of re-releases, there is also a disc of covers from Aussie artists like Dannii Minogue and The Veronicas, and even some lesser known performers - what made you choose these artists to cover your works?

You’ve just settled back into Australia after returning from France and you’re already heading on tour! I’ll be on the road from September. It’s going to be a retrospective of 40 years so I think it’s going to be interesting. There will be some songs played that people may not have heard before. Some of them may be reimagined, so it’s going to be very interesting. It’ll be like going in a time capsule! Tina Arena will be at Crown Theatre on Friday October 6th. Tickets and more information available from tinaarena.com Leigh Andrew Hill

Because they’ve got something magical! For me, that’s what it’s about regardless of whether you’re successful or not. When somebody has something, a resonance, that’s what I want to hear so I’m sure the listener will like it as well. T: 08 9427 8888 25 Money Street, Perth WA 6000

music While Tyler’s scored some massive million selling hits in her career with songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It’s a Heartache, her biggest hits have been spread over the ‘70s and ‘80s. Perseverance and hard work have been central to her success, and for Tyler it’s all about the live performance.

Holding Out for a Hero was one of the songs composer Jim Steinman wrote for Tyler, he also penned Total Eclipse of the Heart. Tyler only got to work with the man behind Meatloaf’s biggest hits after she requested a meeting and begged to work him. Their collaboration delivered two giant hits.

“I’ve always been about doing shows you know, even when I haven’t been in the charts. Then when I get a hit record they say ‘Bonnie’s come back!’ Come back? I’ve never gone away.”

Getting a hit record involves a certain amount of luck and at times the luck hasn’t flown the singer’s way. In the late 80s Tyler put out an album Hide Your Heart that struggled in the charts, but many of the songs she chose went on to be hits for other artists, including Simply the Best which Just this year Tyler’s touring has taken her to New Zealand, was a giant hit for Tina Turner. Israel, South Africa, Germany and Austria. She has high praise for the musicians she tours with and reveals some of Also on the record was a cover of the Bee Gee’s To them have been playing with her for over 25 years. Love Somebody, which was a hit soon after for Jimmy Sommerville. Cher and Kiss found success with other Her most recent record Rocks and Honey was recorded in tracks off the record. Nashville, the album has a country flavour. The lead single Believe in Me was chosen to be Britain’s 2013 entry for Tyler says in some ways they are the songs that got away, Eurovision. Tyler says she was never under any illusion that but she’s glad they were hits for other artists. she could win the competition. “I recorded Simply the Best two years before Tina Turner “It’s become too political. I knew I was going to come and she had a hit with it all over the world, but she only hardly anywhere, because it’s not about the music anymore. gave me confidence back about my choice in material,” It’s about the politics” Tyler reflected, “It was a great Tyler said, before adding, “and I have to be honest, she experience, I quite enjoyed it, it was hard work. did it much better than I did.” “It’s like a gay paradise though isn’t it”, Tyler laughed, “It’s like a 100% of the audience, it’s just amazing, the atmosphere is just electric” Today the fast track to a pop career is getting four judges to turn their chairs on a reality TV show program, but for Bonnie Tyler her journey to success took years of hard work and never ending perseverance. Bonnie called OUTinPerth from her home in Portugal, with her distinctive welsh accent shining through, we chatted about how a girl named Gaynor Hopkins made the journey to the top of the charts.

One of Tyler’s best known tracks Holding Out for a Hero recently featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race, she said she was unaware that she’d achieved a new claim to fame but was thrilled to hear people had lip-synced for their lives to her tune.

Another track on the record Don’t Turn Around actually began life as the b-side to Turner’s hit Typical Male, but went on to become a massive smash for Aswad, and later, Ace of Base. Tyler promised her upcoming shows will delight fans, be filled with her biggest hits and the inevitable giant sing-along to Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Bonnie Tyler is at the Crown Theatre on 24 May “I’m not surprised, it was the gay clubs that broke that song with her Greatest Hits tour. for me, they played it, and played it, and played it. I was Graeme Watson living in New York at the time, for eight months, and they called and asked if I could come home and do Top of the Pops, I was there like a rat up a drain pipe.”

Perfume Genius No Shape It’s hard to believe that Mike Hadreas could ever top his last record, the universally acclaimed Too Bright, but he certainly gives it a good shot with his follow up. No Shape is more self-assured and optimistic in theme. First single Slip Away is alive with Kate Bush-esque hooks and accompanied by a fantastical video clip. It’s also a very personal album - the last track Alan is an homage to his partner of 8 years. When the top 10 lists are compiled at the end of the year, No Shape deserves to be in contention. -Tracey Chung

CBD Tailored for Now: Eleven R&B Super Jams We last saw singer Andrew De Silva competing on Australia’s Got Talent, now he’s back in 90’s band CBD who return with an album of covers. The problem with this album is it’s hard for the band to find a way to add their own signature, they have wonderful voices and their harmonies are over the top, but they need to bring a little extra to make it special. Highlights include their take on Boys II Men’s End of the Road and KC and Jojo’s All My Life. -Aymeric Futol

Shamir Hope Offered as a free download, this album that was recorded over a weekend is distinctly different to Shamir’s previous record. A lo-fi mix of folk, grunge and torch songs that sees the androgynous singer forging new territory. It’s not a polished production, it’s raw, filled with emotions, wails and angst. It sounds hazy and messy, it’s captivating. On Rain Shamir lists the different ways you waste your life, I Fuckin Hate You is surprisingly upbeat, What Else the record’s closing track is it’s catchiest moment. A challenging listen, but Shamir is, as always, intriguing. -Graeme Watson

Adam Harvey & Beccy Cole The Country Songbook Volume II Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole team up for a fun filled album of well known and much loved country tunes. They tackle a pile of the genre’s best known tunes including Jackson, If I Were a Carpenter, Don’’t Fall in Love with a Dreamer, and We’ve Got Tonight. Covering Islands in the Stream is a brave move, but they do it well. You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly is possibly the best named country tune ever. Adam and Beccy sound like they’re having a whale of a time. - Graeme Watson

Felipe Rose can’t contain his enthusiasm that the Village People are coming to Perth. Rose, who has been the Indian in the iconic band since it first formed in the 1970’s, said it’s the band’s 39th visit to Australia, but by his recollections will only be the fifth time they’ve made it to the west coast. The Village People are coming to town to celebrate their 40th anniversary, and Rose recalled what the early days of the band were like, sharing that they were undoubtedly born out of the rise of gay rights and the heady days of disco. “It was crazy, when the first album dropped, with San Francisco and Hollywood, it was the time of Anita Bryant and it was the summer that everyone came out. Aldous Harding’s self titled debut album was a music critics favourite. A collection of haunting and tragic folk songs that told epic tales. Now the Kiwi singer is ready to release her second album, the surprisingly titled Party. For her sophomore record Hannah Harding, who performs under the moniker Aldous, headed to Bristol to work with producer John Parish, best known for his long standing creative relationship with PJ Harvey. While speaking to OUTinPerth Harding pauses to think about each question, and gives carefully worded responses. While she’s happy to share her emotions through songs, the singer has never been entirely comfortable talking about her work. Asked why Parish was at the top of her list of people to work with, she explains how she was drawn to some of his recent collaborations.

“It was a time of Liberation, it wasn’t even pride yet, nobody was calling it that. It was ‘we’re liberated’, ‘we’re coming out’, ‘now you can see who we really are’. Rose said. When the group first started Rose didn’t think it would last more than a year, and his approach was just to have fun and enjoy the experience. “We never set out to be a gay band, and we would never have lasted this long if we had.” Rose said, sharing that producer Jacques Morali was the one who put lots of gay references into the band’s songs. It wasn’t until queer culture moved into the mainstream that people looked back and saw all the band’s references to San Francisco, Fire Island, Key West, and Liberation, not to mention being ‘In the Navy’ and heading to the YMCA.

“It probably the Laura Jean album, because it was close to the kind of stuff I was making at the time, and of course Perfume Genius. Because between the two of them they felt close to the kind of stuff I could see myself making.” The resulting album Party sounds similar to her first record, but Parish brings in a variety of unexpected elements, from electronic sounds to powerful backing vocals. Harding said she finds it hard to describe the new work, “I’m too close to it, I don’t know how it sounds to other people.” The first reviews of the record have been filled with praise, and Harding is positive about hearing the good feedback. “I think shit, that’s fantastic! They like what John and I liked, there’s an age old feeling of satisfaction, it’s good to know people hear what you hear.” One unexpected fan Harding’s work is Charlotte Church. The Welsh singer named checked Aldous Harding in a recent interview, describing her tune I’m So Sorry as one of the saddest songs she’d ever heard. “Isn’t that mental.” Harding said of the compliment, “It’s so weird”. The band scored a string of big hits in the late 70’s and then made a feature film, a fictional version of how the band formed. Can’t Stop the Music was panned by the Harding performed at the Perth International Arts Festival a few years ago, supporting Perfume Genius. After delivering her set of quiet folk tunes she surprised the audience by critics, but its soundtrack album was a success. finishing off with a bellowing rendition of an Edith Piaf classic. In the early 80s as new bands like ABC, Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet entered the “That was just when I was beginning to learn that I could sing loudly,” Harding said.”,and with a bit more freedom.”

music scene The Village People shred their character personas and rebranded as New Romantics and released their next album Renaissance. It was a monumental flop.

On her second album she definitely comes across as having more confidence, and lyrically “That was done in a spiteful way,” Rose said recalling that the producers were so upset also appears to be writing about happier experiences. Harding says she didn’t consciously about the failure of the movie, ‘They said let’s ditch the costumes and re-brand, and you should never do anything is a spiteful manner because it will come back and bite you in set out to make a happier record, the ass” “I just was happier. It’s so funny the first two songs I wrote after I finished Aldous Harding The record is now finding love via a new generation of DJs who are discovering it’s are the last two on the album.. And if I was to write a list of the order I wrote the songs previously unappreciated disco tunes. And while the band fell out of favour and broke up in, you’d be able to tell that my mood is just going up and up and up, and the confidence in knowing that I can do and be whatever I want, comes through stronger each time, with for a few years in the 80’s, since they reformed they’ve been embraced by fans around the world. each song. That probably sounds corny and rubbish, but it’s the natural way of things.” Harding said that despite sounding positively more upbeat on the new record she hasn’t necessarily discovered the key to happiness. “I don’t know what the secret is, I just know that I don’t plan to fuck with whatever I was fucking with before, again. I just have a much better time now, and I think you’ve just got to, get on with it, and try to enjoy it. Life’s a lie, but you got to get in there. “I don’t think there’s a secret, but I think I’m slowly figuring out to put the puzzle together and how to get there. “When I was a kid I had a job, and I would keep money in an envelope, because I’d get addicted to watching the envelope get thicker. Now I feel like an envelope that slowly getting thicker. I’m more content and comfortable with myself, I get excited by that, and it gets better.”

“We’re now one of the most sought after bands in the world from our era, we have two international booking agents, and we’re literally fighting for every calendar date” Rose said. As soon as the band’s Australian tour ends they get just one day off before they head to Lima in Peru. Rose said the only thing stopping the band from paying more shows was the speed of airplanes and time zones. Even though the bands greeted by enthusiastic fans everywhere they go, Rose reveals he still gets nervous before each and every show. “No two audiences are the same, and every venue is different, the energy is different every night, the anticipation you can feel it in the arena.”

Party will be released on 19 May.

The Village People are playing Crown Theatre on 21 May, where they’ll be joined by Bjorn Again.

fitness

This season Hoodedwept designer Neil Sheriff takes us deep into outer space. Saturn to be exact. Inspired by the 12 year odyssey of the Cassini space mission, AW17’s Nexus is a collection the void is articulated in dark heavy wool and carbon dust is captured in sequins, all of it playing off smooth optic moon whites and they grey of Saturn’s moons. Zen and ambience meets streetwear basically. Sheriff caught up with OUTinPerth to take us into space, fashion’s final frontier. So, what is Speed Fit? In a nutshell, it is electronic muscle stimulation (EMS). EMS is a scientifically proven training method that has actually been around for decades. Typically used for rehabilitation, EMS mimics the natural action of the central nervous system by sending electric impulses to contract your muscles. The electric impulses are delivered in six second intervals, with four seconds’ rest – and believe me, you will treasure those four seconds. In the six seconds of work, your trainer takes you through a series of simple movement patterns such as squatting, lunging, pushing, pulling and twisting. The charge is delivered whilst holding these positions. The outcome? To strengthen, tone muscles and burn calories. Speed Fit training centres are sleek, clean and modern with well-informed and friendly staff. To kick off the experience, you are treated to a tasty pre-workout tonic water packed full of nutrients and electrolytes. Now your body is well hydrated and ready for a zapping! After your trainer provides a thorough run through on what to expect, you are suited up, plugged in and ready to go. The electric impulses can be programmed at varying levels of intensity, making this training method suitable for anyone. The sensation of those impulses is unique to say the least – you’ll either laugh, scream or cry. Overall, I found the Speed Fit experience fun and super interesting. The studio I visited was geared up to train a maximum of two people at a time, so it’s great to try with a buddy or fellow guinea pig. I made sure I bullied a friend into joining me which made the whole experience much more fun. The next day, my muscles felt sore in the same way they would after a gruelling weights workout at the gym. I’ll be honest, I was sceptical about this training method. But like anything in life, I like to try it out for myself before I make up my mind. I was pleased the trainer advocated the necessity of including a variety of different and more traditional activities – like walking or swimming - along with clean eating to make up a complete lifestyle program. I’m a big lover of variety and trying new things to keep the body guessing. I would say it’s definitely worth it to give Speed Fit a shot. But here are some key points to consider whether it would work for you: 1. Speed Fit workouts are 20 minutes long and only recommended once per week. The training is fast, which means it’s great for anyone who is time poor or just doesn’t like to work out for a long time. 2. There is no impact and moderate amounts of movement. It’s a great option for those nursing injuries. 3. You get a tasty pre-workout to begin and a protein shake to end. It was a great personal touch but also saves you a little bit of cash on supplements. Beau Carruthers Beau is the founder of ONE Fitness Health Lifestyle in Subiaco

Talk us through this season’s inspiration? I became obsessed by this idea that each planet and moon has its own sonic signature and actually sings. So the planets are singing and this idea obsessed me. And I thought that’s great Neil, but you can’t translate that visually because it’s sonic. So I looked at the visual outcome of that mission, the photography sent back and it’s the first time in any known lifetime that we’ve had imagery this clear and this intense. So the whole palette (of the collection) comes from the colours and textures in our known galaxy. What did you connect with the most from this imagery? The loneliness of it all. We have such a lonely galaxy. It made me draw a clearer parallel as planets, as their own astral bodies, and the planets out there and how, fundamentally, we are all adrift in a sea of space. But at the end of the day we still have our voice, our own vibration and we’re all just reaching out to each other with this vibration. This collection has a bit more of a street edge to it: why’s that? If you’re doing anything to do with space travel, it’s gotta have elements of that journey so I brought in tech-wear elements. But we’ve also found, over the past two seasons, that we’ve forged a massive connection with street culture. A lot of our supporters are from that background. They’re interested in something artistic and intellectual, so it’s inclusion is a slight nod to that growth, a logical progression. Standout pieces this season? For women the Prometheus Funnel Jacket: that shit is sexual. For men the Cygnus Tech Hoody. And for everybody else I’d recommend having fun with the collection: each piece appears on the website with a story next to it, so find a piece or a story that resonates with you. Advice for upcoming labels? Be authentic. Be realistic. And work under somebody else for at least three years before you start your own label: cut your teeth on somebody else’s time before you fuck up on your own. Visit www.hoodedwept.com to see the full collection and keep an eye for his upcoming capsule collection created in collaboration with former Shakespeare’s Sister Marcella Detroit, released soon. iPho Food in Fremantle is not exactly hard to come by so when Anzac Day rolled around Vietnamese cuisine seemed weirdly appropriate. Ipho has an exhaustingly extensive menu but we sampled the grilled pork with spring roll noodles and the mock chicken and rice. Half a pig and lot of noodle salad later I was pretty satisfied. I was less impressed by the mock chicken but that may be because I have no idea what it actually is and the staff were no help in explaining it to me. Overall the food is good, the portion sizes are generous, but the service and ambience is just okay.

A new series of Janet King will air on the ABC. Marta Dusseldorp returns as the tough prosecutor who is taking on new challenges.

Subtitled Playing for Advantage, the show’s third season sees the title character moving into a new role at the National Crime Commission to head an investigation into gambling and match fixing in competitive sport. The series is set two years after we last saw Janet King, she’s been away training prosecutors in Fiji and returns to join her mentor Tony Gillies (Peter Kowawitz) in his new role. A few familiar faces from previous series return. Her former right-hand man Richard Stirling (Hamish Michael) is now on the other side of the fence acting as a defence barrister for accused sportsmen, while calculating Owen Mitchell (Damian Walshe-

New cast members include Don Hany, who plays a sporting hero, while Susie Porter joins the show as a high powered publicist.

If you’re looking for a refreshing change to a greasy fish and chip experience, Grand Lane Fish House might be what you’re searching for. Located in a funky laneway just off the Murray St Mall the menu is simple but comprehensive. Paul the friendly owner/operator couldn’t have been more accommodating and he is serving up the best fish and chips in the city. On offer is a decent range of main fish options teamed with some classic European style sides (including a childhood favourite of mine… mushy peas) and actual in house made chips.

Marta Dusseldorp’s character Janet King first appeared in the 2011 ABC series Crownies. Characters from the show have continued on in three series Janet King. Janet King returns at 8:30pm Thursday 25 May on ABC TV.

ALL ABOUT LOVE

Love is Love (), directed by Logan Mucha and Daniel Von Czarnecki, records the lives of four LGBTI families in Australia. It is a unique journey to become a queer parent and in this short film and the filmmakers interview people who have formed family bonds with those they love, trust and identify with. The film opens with a mum and her Trans partner explaining to their 3 year old that she was conceived with the help of a donor father. The filmmakers also talk to a lesbian with disabilities about structural exclusion, to a family whose children have two mums, two dads and thirteen grandparents and a man with same-sex parents. Love is Love one of the Australian short films in the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival that will be on held on Thursday 1 June at Luna on SX, Fremantle. Now in its tenth year, the festival hopes to contribute to social change by showing films that explore diverse and inspiring stories focusing on social justice and human rights. A Dog’s Purpose () is directed by Lasse Hallström who was responsible for My Life as a Dog. Narrated by the dog (voiced by Josh Gad), the premise is that “every dog happens for a reason”. In other words the dogs come into people’s lives to help them out. It is the 1960s when the first dog Bailey is introduced as a cute pup who just wants to make his owners happy. When Bailey dies (have plenty of tissues on hand), he finds himself reincarnated as Ellie the police dog in the 1970s. More tissues are required as Ellie becomes reincarnated in the 1980s and the 1990s to find that not all humans treat dogs decently. Some slapstick humour (particularly when trying to teach the family cat to be more like a dog) is thrown in with the pathos and the greeting card insights will have all doggy-hearted people reaching for yet more tissues. All incarnations have unconditional love for their owners, even if they have difficulty understanding why they do things such as “leave”. Yes – might as well finish off the box of tissues as you enjoy the journey to doggie fulfilment. Get Out () is all about the things we do for love, but there is a massive twist as the drama quickly develops into a huge horror film. Writer/ director Jordan Peele has also managed to incorporate self-aware humour that attacks the horror genre, racism and family loyalty. When Rose (Allison Williams) takes her African American Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) to meet her parents at their country estate, it doesn’t take long before the overly pleasant facade shows more and more cracks as disturbing discoveries are made. Actually, I was so entrenched in the horror element of the story that it was only on reflection that I gleaned all the hints that were dropped along the way. I couldn’t get the film (and one of the songs) out of my mind. Catherine Keener is so creepy as Rose’s mother Missy who wants to hypnotise Chris to help him give up smoking and Lil Rel Howery as Chris’s friend and security guard is priceless. Lezly Herbert
