Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair Returns to Marina Bay Sands The third edition of the region’s largest jewellery marketplace will take place in October, 2015 at Marina Bay Sands and will showcase more than 100,000 pieces Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair will return for its third year as the largest fine jewellery event in the region. From 22-25 October at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, visitors will find themselves stepping into an extraordinary world of glitter and glamour featuring more than 100,000 pieces of fine jewellery and gems covering an extensive price range from hundreds to millions of dollars. Exclusively endorsed by the
Singapore Jewellers Association and the Diamond Exchange of Singapore, the fair presents buyers with unique opportunities to acquire desirable jewels directly from reputable jewellery manufacturers and wholesalers from around the world. “The third edition of Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair will present a greater variety of jewellery, bigger surprises and more business and trading opportunities than the previous two editions. According to Forbes magazine, Singapore is regarded as the third wealthiest nation in the world based on gross domestic product (GDP) at purchasing power parity per capita. Singapore has 105,000 high-networth individuals (HNWIs) and is poised to record the world’s highest growth of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) in the next decade. In 2014, Singapore’s jewellery market was worth approximately US$3.5 billion. According to the Antwerp World Diamond Centre in Belgium, approximately 184,000 carats of polished diamonds valued at US$315 million were exported from Antwerp to Singapore in the past six years, and the Singapore jewellery market is expected to grow even further in the next few years. The last edition of the Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair attracted 161 international exhibitors from 21 countries and a total of 9,615 visitors; a ten percent increase over its inaugural 2013 edition’s visitorship. The fair also concluded with 89 percent of visitors expressing their satisfaction with the quality of exhibitors and 80 percent of visitors sharing their interest to visit the fair again.

First Ever Solar-Powered Tea Plantation in China to be Delivered by Trina Solar Trina Solar Limited, a global leader in photovoltaic (PV) modules, solutions, and services, has announced an agreement to supply 51MW of its dual glass modules to Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, and the EPC provider for the agricultural PV power plant project located in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province in China. The plant will be used to power equipment in tea plantations, and will be the first of its kind within China. Jichun Zhang, Deputy General
Manager of Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute commented: “We are very pleased to cooperate with Trina Solar, an industry leader with a vision to build a greener world, for a pioneer project in China to put solar power to work on the tea plantations. I believe with Trina Solar’s leading technology and highly reliable products, the tea plantations can be more efficient with

AIMS Group Acquires Jaring Network despite Unhealthy Market The AIMS Group, Southeast Asia’s leading carrier-neutral data services provider, has secured the bid to acquire the data centre and networkrelated customer assets of Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd (Jaring). Under the acquisition, AIMS will also attain the rights to Jaring’s IPv4 addresses and all of Jaring’s existing customers related to data centre, broadband and access, cloud and managed services. The estimated total value of these unexpired contracts is more than RM50 million. AIMS Group Chief Operating Officer Mohammad Azman said: “AIMS was awarded Jaring’s assets based on a balance of many factors; in terms of price, product portfolio, experience and skilled resources to fast track the necessary migrations between AIMS

increasing self-reliance and emitting less pollution.” The agricultural PV project will have the capacity to deliver 100MW in total. However, phase 1 of the project will shortly begin and see 51MW installed by Trina Solar. Its dual glass frameless PV modules are extremely durable, made with front and back layers of heatstrengthened glass, providing strong protection against environmental factors such as heavy humidity and pesticide use, while maintaining a high rate of sunlight transmission and efficiency. They excel in greenhouse environments, where properly maintaining temperature is crucial to the success of crop growth. Shipments of the modules are expected to complete in Q3 2015. and the acquired Jaring operations.” He also highlighted the data centre would leverage its unique ‘carrier neutral’ position to ensure smooth migration of services for Jaring’s customers. As it is, AIMS’ data centre space located at Menara AIMS in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, is currently almost fully 100 percent utilised. In order to cater for its newly acquired assets, such as Jaring, AIMS plans to add another 10,000 square feet of space to its Kuala Lumpur facility. Additionally, AIMS also operates data centres in Cyberjaya, Johor, Singapore, Penang and Sabah. “The Group’s decision to selectively acquire Jaring’s assets was carefully deliberated upon. We are very confident that AIMS will be able to optimise the purchase of assets from Jaring for our customers, as well as for the betterment of the data centre sector in Malaysia,” Azman concluded.

Major IoT Study Reveals Revenue Gainsx According to a recent study conducted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), more than 80 percent of companies around the world have increased their revenue by investing in the Internet of Things, with a significant number planning huge investment in this area in 2015 alone. The major study on IoT surveyed 795 executives and highlighted the significant challenges that lie ahead for businesses transitioning to the new model. Commenting on the study, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, CEO and MD of TCS, said: “The age of IoT is well underway. The question is, whether businesses are ready to realise the full potential of this technology. Our latest global trend study found that leaders in using IoT technologies are using it to completely re-imagine their businesses by changing every aspect of them from business models and products to business processes and workplaces. “Now is the time for every leader in every industry to re-imagine the possibilities for their businesses in a world of smart, connected ‘things’.”

Leading independent mining consultancy firm, AMC Consultants (AMC), has further expanded its offices beyond Australia, increasing its presence in Singapore with its eighth office in the country. Renewable Energy Overtakes Nuclear among Asia’s Economic Elite Solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy - besides hydroelectric dams - now supply more electricity than nuclear in Japan, China, India and five other major economies accounting for about half of the world’s population - according to an atomic industry report entitled the ‘World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2015’. While nuclear stations on average produce around twice as much electricity as renewables annually, for every kilowatt installed, the high growth of solar, wind and other renewables means atomic power is fast being eclipsed as nations turn away from the energy source after the Fukushima disaster in Japan. Nuclear power generation increased by 2.2 percent globally in 2014, even with the first extended shutdown of Japan’s atomic industry for 45 years, but with solar power increasing 38 percent and wind power up by a 10th, energy from the sun, wind and other renewable sources is outpacing that of the atom.

By rolling out its products in some of the world’s fast-emerging economies, Chinese startup-cum-tech giant, Xiaomi has emerged as the planet’s third largest phone maker behind Samsung and Apple Writer: Emily Jarvis ast year, Xiaomi became the world’s most valuable tech startup Company, a status which is representative of its climb from zero to a valuation of US$45 billion in just four years. Having surpassed Huawei to become the third largest smartphone maker in the world, China’s Xiaomi is emerging as a serious contender in the mobile market, with the potential to challenge the big two – Samsung and Apple – in its sights. This meteoric rise to fame for the now-smartphone giant was a result of China’s growing prominence as an economic superpower that continues to grow at an incredible rate; with the country’s manufacturing industry generally holding steady in recent times. Apple currently represents a seven percent market share in China, and Xiaomi is hot on its heels with a six percent share and eagerness to take the number one position not just in its home market, but across the world’s emerging economies through an initial expansion focus that will see its unique business model deployed in India, Brazil and other Asian countries; leveraging the substantial population in these territories to secure the highest smartphone sales figures in the world.

Stepping up expectation
Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi Named ‘Forbes Businessman of the Year’ in 2014, Xiaomi Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Lei Jun is often referred to as the ‘Steve Jobs of China’; the head of a growing technology company and a billionaire at 43 years old. Lei owns more than 30 percent of Xiaomi and aside from his entrepreneurial talents, he is also a renowned investor in the Chinese market. At the launch of the Mi 4i in India earlier this year, Lei gave his first speech in what was a valiant and brave attempt at English; a barrier which many Chinese Companies have struggled to overcome. When he announced a free smart wristband for each audience member he yelled out: “Are you OK? Are you OK?” in an attempt to gauge the enthusiasm of the crowd, which quickly became an overnight viral sensation on Youtube after being turned into a music video.
Xiaomi’s rise to prominence is partly based on its ability to create costcompetitive smartphones and tablets while maintaining all the specifications that would be expected from a highend device. Large screens and high build quality at half the cost compared to Samsung and Apple products are key differentiating factors that keep the pressure on these dominant names in technology. Having been criticised for its likeness to the iPhone 5S, the newly released Xiaomi Mi4 has a stainless steel metal frame with the remainder of the case made from plastic with interchangeable plastic covers that are available in a variety of colours and fake wood finishes. Similarly, like the Samsung Galaxy line, the Mi4 features an Android-offshoot proprietary operating system, the MIUI 6 OS, which is based on Android’s 4.4 KitKat. As the national underdog in the global phone market, Xiaomi is driving down the average device costs faster than other makers, according to market research; and its web distribution model cuts at least 10 percent out of the price of each mobile phone through online selling only, cutting out the middleman margins.

The devices are a far cry from the poor quality reputation that has plagued China’s manufacturing industry for decades, retaining a sale price that is as close to the cost price as possible. In a way, the Mi4 smartphone and Mi6 tablet pair together arguably two of the best loved elements from each handset so as to create something new; however the blatant similarities are difficult for any competitor to ignore and the issue will no doubt come to a head soon, for better or worse. Xiaomi Co-Founder, Lin Bin has previously said that while intellectual property issues were one factor in its global strategy, it was not their biggest concern.

Contracting market
As a largely domestic Company still, Xiaomi’s fortunes are closely tied to the purchase patterns of Chinese consumers, which has been harboured in 2015 by flatlining sales as the country’s smartphone market shows little signs of growth. During the first half of 2015, Xiaomi shifted an impressive 34.7 million smartphones, representing 33 percent growth year-on-year. While this may seem like considerable growth, the figure is exactly the same as the one achieved in the previous six months, which has called for the Company to explore the possibility of venturing

into other Asian territories; including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Most recently - after some serious investment in 2014 - Xiaomi was able to expand into Brazil, another fast-emerging economy that marked its first non-Asian market entry. The Company’s launch here attracted a significantly larger crowd than initially planned for when close-to 8,000 people applied to attend a launch with only 1,500 available seats. It was reported that a few travelled from a town near the Amazon rainforest and the surrounding regions that would have required a 24-hour bus ride. This response prompted a snap decision to hold a second launch event three hours later on the same day.

In addition, the Company was banned then subsequently reinstated to sell its smartphones in India after Swedish-based Ericsson entered a

patent infringement suit claiming that Xiaomi’s handsets used its patented technologies without permission. Accompanying the announcement of its first manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Predesh this year, Xiaomi announced the imminent launch of the first Xiaomi smartphone - the Redmi 2 Prime - to be manufactured in India. The Company was able to form a partnership with a local company as part of the ‘Make in India’ programme, however, it will have to amend its online business model to bring the devices in-store to cater for India’s preferred method of sale. Xiaomi’s expansion into Brazil and India could not have come at a better time as China’s smartphone market has recently started to contract, which had become a potential worry for investors who have supported the brand throughout the years. These investors are key to securing a global future for Xiaomi’s products and creating a dominant brand presence,

similar to that of its home country that can rival the customer pull of Apple and Samsung. Brazil and India is just the beginning of the Company’s foray into new territories as it has secured soft entry into Europe and the US via its online shop, where the popular Mi smartphone is nowhere to be seen due to pending resolution of patent issues. However, the online store has launched with four of the Company’s most sturdy but small-time products: the Mi semi-open headphones, Mi Band activity and sleep tracker and two sizes of the portable Mi Power Banks for charging on the move.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone sales are forecast to grow from 1.5 billion units in 2015, to a record 1.7 billion by 2017; with China accounting for 458 million of these, rising to 505 million in two years. Driven by low smartphone penetration rates, expanding retail availability of devices, wealthier middle-class consumers and an aggressive approach to brand promotions, India is the market that Xiaomi is keen to watch. Here, it is forecast that 118 million smartphones will be sold in 2015, sharply rising to 174 million in 2017; making India the second largest smartphone adopters by volume in two years time. AsO: What are the most common causes of data centre outages and how much of an effect can they have on downtime? LCH: The following figures serve to only emphasise the fact that data centre breakdown is detrimental to anyone’s business. That’s why it is critical to invest in the right IT infrastructure to ensure system availability and resiliency to avoid costly outages. According to a 2013 study by Ponemon Institute on the cost of data centre outages, the most common causes of data centre outages are UPS battery failure (55%), human error (48%) and UPS capacity exceeded (46%). Other causes of data centre outages are: • Cyber attack (34%) • IT equipment failure (33%) • Water incursion (32%) • Weather related (30%) • Heat related/CRAC failure (29%) • UPS equipment failure (27%) • PDU/circuit breaker failure (26%)

Meanwhile, the most frequently cited total expense of unplanned outages includes: • IT equipment failure ($959,000) • Cyber crime ($882,000) • UPS system failure ($478,000) • Water, heat or CRAC failure ($517,000) • Generator failure ($501,000) • Weather incursion ($436,000) • Accidental/human error ($380,000) Moreover, the same study found that unplanned data centre outage costs about US$7,900 a minute, while a total data centre outage, with a recovery time of 119 minutes, costs US$901,000. AsO: In line with this, tell me what Emerson is doing in order to ensure resilience at the network edge for its customers? In summary, what we’re seeing is that converged solutions were developed to help organisations deploy and scale applications faster while reducing risks and total costs. With rapid changes in many markets being driven by innovation, digitisation and mobility, the need for speed that a convergence system delivers is greater than ever and many organisations are recognising this. Combining the attributes of fast deployment, inherent

AsO: How does the elimination of challenges at the network edge fall into Emerson’s own sustainability strategy? How do you balance critical availability and energy efficiency for your customers? LCH: It is essential to achieve both critical availability and energy efficiency in data centres without sacrificing overall data centre performance. Data centre efficiency is not only dependent on power usage effectiveness (PUE) but also on overall data centre availability by means of controlling unplanned downtime. As an example, a data centre with low PUE can experience poor efficiency due to inappropriate design of system level architecture and thus losing data centre operation for few minutes. This results in clients losing revenue or experiencing large cost of downtime. Thus, availability plays an important role in data centre efficiency improvement Moreover, one of the most important challenges that must be addressed in any data centre design project is configuring systems to meet current requirements, while ensuring the ability to adapt to future demands. In the past, this was accomplished by oversizing infrastructure systems and letting the data centre grow into its infrastructure over time. That no longer works because it is inefficient

in both capital and energy costs. The new generation of infrastructure systems are designed for greater scalability, enabling systems to be sized correctly during the design phase; and progressively adding module by module as the data centre grows. This does not call for UPS scalability alone, but also the scalability of integrated infrastructure in a standardised manner. On Course for Vision 2040
The Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s (SSI) global breadth of industry-leading members have spent the past four years implementing a Case for Action which looks to address some of the sector’s most significant challenges and opportunities Writer: Matthew Staff y its nature, the shipping industry is one of the truly global industrial sectors influencing the world’s economies, affected by a raft of industry, regional, political and resource challenges in the face of ever-increasing strains and demands on the freight domain. Formulating a plan to deal with such myriad challenges therefore becomes an imperative, if not even more challenging, requirement, and is one that the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has worked to achieve since first implementing its Case for Action in 2011. Its subsequent Vision 2040 further elaborated on the trends that needed to be addressed on an intercontinental scale, and the challenges that needed to be overcome over the coming decades; culminating in a member-led organisation that continues to expand and educate with each passing year en route to 2040. The Chief Executive orchestrating SSI’s successes is Alastair Fischbacher who, having experienced and witnessed many of the impending challenges the shipping industry faces while working for Rio Tinto, is optimistic about the organisation’s plan for shipping’s future.

Sustainable Shipping Initiative The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) brings together some of the biggest names in the maritime sector to plan how it can contribute to - and thrive in - a sustainable future
Asia Outlook (AsO): Please talk me through the Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s origins, the original Case for Action, and your role as part of the organisation. Alastair Fischbacher (AF): I was working for Rio Tinto when the Company joined the SSI in its founding stage and as it was developing its Case for Action. At that time there was a lot of work being done in understanding the wide variety of trends and challenges that were affecting the industry. Those were then narrowed down into the megatrends, which were illustrated in the Case for Action in 2011. The Vision 2040 was extrapolated from this and also published later that year. AsO: What were these megatrends and how much of a collaborative process was involved in bringing them to light? AF: Seven megatrends were identified, covering a number of different areas including the global economy,

technology, the changing climate, the energy mix and migration from the use of oil, ocean governance and regulations, and the transparency of the industry. These became the focal point, because beforehand, while we had the background and substance, we needed to conceptually clarify it. With these underlying megatrends in place we not only developed a vision but we also had people standing up and acknowledging it. Even more importantly, it wasn’t just the people working on it standing up and saying ‘this is it’, but it was the CEOs of the member companies signing the Vision and saying ‘yes, we agree with this’. People who join now are still physically signing up to that Vision, working together to find solutions to the three key challenges; the economic context, the increased scrutiny regarding energy and climate change. AsO: Following the establishment of the Vision 2040, what efforts went into spreading the word and ensuring that it caught the industry’s attention? AF: Essentially, the SSI’s remit is comprised of two things. One is the collaborative efforts of the members in demonstrating leadership in the industry, working together and sharing best practice amongst ourselves. This involves learning from one another and ultimately accelerating progress internally. Secondly is the education of the industry from a wider, external context based on the learnings and knowledge developed. Having done the internal side of things, it then expands externally to show we are prepared to share more widely what we know and understand. There’s always a balance between commercial sensitivity and appropriate levels of communication, but the fact that members are prepared to try and engage, and bring the industry along

with them is very important. A lot of what is said is around the case of ‘the longer you leave it, the harder it becomes’; because there is no doubt that the industry has to change from a number of perspectives. You’re seeing those impacts already through increased discussions over emissions on a political and chartering level, and whereas corporate social responsibility was not really a well-known term in shipping not long ago, it is now becoming increasingly visible under the holistic banner of sustainability. It is a member-led organisation, so the responsibility is with them to influence change, but we also publish case studies that demonstrate best practice, and reports which reference activities and things being done; the

successes, the challenges and how they can be overcome. We have to be proactive, but pushing the boundaries is what’s required to portray the same old stories in a different way and to keep it fresh in the industry. We published our Case for Action in 2011, our Case for More Action in 2013, and we have another report coming out later this year. Following on from this, we have to find fresh and innovative ways to bring attention to the requirements, and drive actionable and tangible change, because they certainly haven’t gone away. AsO: To that end, what responsibilities are placed on member companies to drive further development?

AF: As the SSI secretariat we don’t set individual ambition levels. From an SSI perspective, we take a view of the sustainability challenges within the industry, and work together as a collective to set out our Vision, and its objectives. To assist this we have developed a roadmap, which sets out tangible milestones to work towards achieving it by 2040. The roadmap highlights some uncertainties but also some things that really do need to happen if we are going to be successful, and through our members, it’s already happening to a large extent. We have improved that interaction and visibility, with the importance of the outcomes as the focus. It is an active membership, so when you join you have to do things and participate actively, share and be multifaceted.

It’s a matter of quality above quantity too, and we’re not seeking to grow our membership exponentially at the risk of detracting from how the organisation works. The existing members want new members to come in and participate, but if we grow too fast, that won’t happen in a successful way. It needs to be an organic growth. AsO: What would you say have been the main signs of progress so far, despite still being in the very early stages of development? AF: Firstly, the transparency being brought on by charterers’ requirements and the demand for transparency is one area that has been developing positively. Secondly is progress in technical areas, because while it’s a slow process and it’s unlikely that there will be a light bulb moment, there is still a lot of
great work going on. Another aspect of our vision already being seen is the mix of fuels being used. We went from coal to oil in terms of ship propulsion and now we have LNG coming on board too. We also have talk of wind assist technologies which are exciting, despite coming with their own challenges. Lots of things are happening, from very small but important improvements - focused on making day-to-day operations more efficient such as slow steaming and route optimisation to save fuel and reduce emissions - to some fairly large scale improvements from a technical perspective that could potentially transform vessel designs of the future.

NG ASIA nterOil Corporation is partnering with one of the world’s major LNG players to develop one of Papua New Guinea’s most significant projects. Total of France is the global heavyweight in question, selecting InterOil, as well as Oil Search, as the ideal collaborators with which to develop the Papua LNG Project based on the Elk-Antelope gas field in the country’s Gulf province. This latest partnership signals a rapid step-change in perceptions surrounding Papua New Guinea’s
investment risk over the past year, as Thomas Nador, InterOil’s Senior Vice President, Corporate, explains: “When the first shipment of liquefied natural gas left Papua New Guinea’s PNG LNG Project in Port Moresby in mid-2014, the US$19 billion project came in ahead of schedule and demonstrated to the world that Papua New Guinea could develop mega projects. “It effectively de-risked the nation as an investment destination.” Independent analysis by Sanford Bernstein further emphasises this point, highlighting that the ExxonMobil-operated project in

2014 was one of the world’s most efficient LNG developments, with a construction cost of around US$2,300 a tonne. “Analysts are suggesting that ElkAntelope could be even lower cost than the ExxonMobil project because it will require less infrastructure to develop, need shorter pipelines and is in a less remote part of the country than the PNG LNG Project,” Nador adds.

Elk-Antelope, which was discovered by the US-listed InterOil in 2006, is in the final stages of appraisal and the giant field is already described by the Company as one of the largest finds in Asia over the past 20 years. Initial estimates suggest the field could have enough gas to underpin a two-train project to produce about seven million tonnes of LNG, a year, for the next 20 years.

From humble beginnings as a service company in the Canadian Oil and Gas industry, High Arctic has grown to become a leading provider of services in the world’s most challenging environments. Alongside InterOil and Total in helping to realise this potential, Australian company, Oil Search has also been exploring and producing in the country for more than 80 years, currently operating all of Papua New Guinea’s producing oil fields. As a partner in both the PNG LNG and Papua LNG projects, Oil Search has drilled more than 40 development wells in Papua New Guinea since 2003, enjoying a success rate of more than 85 percent and adding more than 50 million barrels of oil to expected ultimate recoveries. More than 50 percent of Oil Search’s oil production now comes from wells drilled in the past six years. On the LNG front, the Elk-Antelope venture has started basis-of-design for the Papua LNG Project and Total expects a final investment decision in 2017 with a view to first gas production in 2022.
World’s biggest demand
At its peak, the PNG LNG project employed almost 22,000 people and Papua LNG is expected to generate similar employment opportunities in the region despite the demand for onshore labour being substantially less as a consequence of it being closer to the coast. The plus side of this new location is the relative ease of access to its core Asian customer base for LNG projects; less than 10 days’ sail away as a comparative advantage over Pacific Basin competitors. Papua LNG sits on the doorstep of the world’s biggest market with China and Japan already major longterm LNG customers for Papua New Guinea. China’s LNG demand is expected to double by 2020, according to Wood Mackenzie analysis, just as LNG contracts into Asia need to be renegotiated. “Japan, the world’s single biggest LNG importer at about 100 million

tonnes a year, expects demand growth to continue, particularly as it grapples with the political implications of returning to full-scale nuclear energy,” Nador adds. “As an illustration of the scale of Japan’s demand, the country consumes about nine trillion cubic feet of gas a year, or the equivalent of one PNG LNG Project each year.” Even further demand in the Asian energy sector is expected over the next two decades as a consequence of the growing middle-class which is expected to triple by 2030 to around 2.5 billion people; all contributing to the likelihood that global demand for LNG will outstrip supply in the coming years.
Investing in Papua New Guinea
The Elk-Antelope project may well be coming on stream just in time to help tackle this shortfall; a realisation which the Papua New Guinea Prime Minister has echoed in iterating how important this second LNG project will be in catalysing an economic boom. According to the Asian Development Bank, economic growth in the country rose to eight percent in 2014 following the first exports of LNG and is expected to rise to 15 percent in 2015, to give Papua New Guinea one of the highest growth rates in the world while also opening up numerous opportunities for the country’s population. During a recent trade visit to the UK, Belgium and France, Mr O’Neill emphasised that job creation was a key motivator of his country’s engagement with European businesses in particular. “There is significant interest in Papua New Guinea from the business community and we must convert that interest into tangible business engagement,” he said. “We cannot think of Europe as being too far away to matter. “Europe offers an important market, particularly for our agricultural

products and there is tremendous potential for strategic partnerships in areas that include banking, energy and resources.” Total’s role within this intercontinental development will be pivotal as InterOil, Oil Search and Papua New Guinea as a whole, look to capitalise on the possibilities that LNG can still generate for the nation over the coming years. “In my meeting with senior executives at Total SA, they reaffirmed their commitment to developing LNG in Papua New Guinea,” Mr O’Neill concluded. “Total is a great example of a European company that recognises the potential for investment in Papua New Guinea. “Total is already employing Papua New Guineans and foreign workers and this number is expected to reach 10,000 at the peak of the construction project. “With one of the fastest growing economies in the world and being a country with ongoing political stability, businesses are interested in investing in Papua New Guinea.”

ince inception in 1991, CSF Group has been a familiar face in Malaysia’s data centre scene, evolving from a small computer room facilities builder into a fully-fledged data centre solutions provider with three commercial-sized data centres under its management. Having undertaken contract works to both build and fit-out more than 200 data centres across Malaysia for customers from a wide array of industries including the Malaysian stock exchange, financial institutions, oil & gas companies, telecommunications companies and government agencies; the Group embarked on its first commercial-sized data centre, the CX1, comprising 45,500 square feet of net data centre space with an IT load capacity of 1.1 megawatts (MW). “As a carrier neutral data centre, we quickly capitalised on the market trend, interconnecting telecommunication carriers and collocation providers. The shift towards the outsourcing of data centre facilities and the subsequent demand for higher density racks and servers saw us invest in our own, much larger data centre facilities, while also continually managing our operational costs to be as efficient and competitive as possible,” explains Lee King Loon, Chief Financial Officer for CSF Group. Once CX1 reached capacity, CSF Group initiated work on a substantially larger second data centre, the CX2, which was commissioned in early 2009, comprising 157,500 square feet of net data centre space with an initial IT load capacity of 5MW. “Due to demand, we invested in additional equipment to increase the IT load capacity of CX2 to 7MW. At the time, this facility was the largest carrier neutral purpose built commercial data centre in Southeast Asia,” he adds. The Group also operates the CX3 data centre located in Johor, Malaysia which comprises 2,000 square feet

of net data centre space and 0.2MW of IT load capacity, housed within a commercial office building. Furthermore, it also has a 20 percent investment in a data centre in Hanoi, Vietnam, referred to as CX4, which comprises approximately 3,300 square feet of net data centre space and 0.4MW of IT load capacity. Completing its data centre investments is CX5, which was developed over three phases spanning the last three years, with the final phase reaching completion this year. Boasting a capacity of more than 200,000 square feet of net data centre space with a total IT load capacity of 12MW, the Group’s priority is to increase the occupancy and utilisation of this data centre. The Group places great emphasis on the maintenance of its facilities to the highest standards while keeping operating costs down for customers. In this regard, there

Our customers will also not be saddled with the responsibility and the recurring expenses associated with maintaining and replacing the infrastructural equipment and components within the data centre facility,” he further explains.

As the cost of bandwidth continues to decrease, the country is beginning to stand tall in the face of competition from other key players in Asia Pacific,” says King Loon. high-density servers. “High-density servers require very efficient cooling, therefore, we have installed waterchilled cooling systems in our CX2 and CX5 data centres, suitable for racks above 5KVA (kilo-volt-amps). Customers that host high power density racks and servers at our data centres will realise the energy cost saving benefits and other operational efficiencies associated with our data centre design and infrastructure. “Our investments were made with a far-sighted view. Upon attaining an optimum level of occupancy in our CX5 data centre, we will be able to reap the rewards of our high initial capital outlay through cost savings and economies of scale. Our CX5 data centre also offers scalability. The IT load capacity can be increased over a planned period of time to cater to the progressive increase IT load consumption of customers,” King Loon details. TO THE WORLD stablished in 2005, Global Transit Communications has evolved from a Malaysian ISP provider into a rapidly growing telecommunications company that specialises in connecting the ASEAN region to the rest of the world. As part of the multinational Time DotCom Berhad (TIME) Group, which also owns the Malaysian data centre giant, AIMS, Global Transit dreams of a Malaysia connected to the world without boundaries. By building bridges through the establishment of partnerships with other service providers in the region, Global Transit hopes to form a strong alliance in order to offer seamless connectivity into ASEAN. “Leveraging our already well developed international connectivity, we strive to become the single point of contact service provider in ASEAN. For us, it is all about making it easier for people to do business in ASEAN and identify this region as one of growing economic prominence,” explains Saiful Husni Samak, Chief Executive Officer of Global Transit Communications. In the past five-10 years, more and more multinational companies - such

as Yahoo, Facebook and Google - have identified Malaysia as a strategic gateway into the ASEAN region, which Global Transit is keen to capitalise on as “the most advanced telecoms infrastructure with the potential to share this with the surrounding countries in the near future”. ISPs in ASEAN at present are experiencing tremendous growth in subscriber numbers for fixed and mobile lines, and this requires a substantial amount of international bandwidth to keep up with the demand; this is where Global Transit comes in. “Broadband penetration has become the engine of growth for our business as a result of this,” says Saiful. “And Malaysia’s broadband used to run on ADSL, producing much slower internet speeds of between 2-5mb. We are now deploying fibre to the home which will more than double these speeds for the ISPs. This is a trend that is happening in most ASEAN countries.”

However, broadband penetration in the country is still fewer than 50 percent, which is low considering that neighbouring Singapore and Hong Kong is more than 70 percent,” details Saiful. By creating a cross-border connection, Global Transit now owns the commanding share of the Indochina international connectivity network; simultaneously increasing the region’s bandwidth and creating crossborder connections through fruitful business partnerships across ASEAN. “Given the landlocked challenges that Indochina faces, we were able to offer connection through our sub-marine cables and capitalise on this growth market. As a result, our

Currently, we have invested in APG connecting Malaysia to Japan, AAE1 connecting Malaysia to Europe, and FASTER connecting Japan and the US further improving our global connectivity.” These investments total more than US$200 million to connect Malaysia to the rest of the world over the past three years, in order to support Global Transit’s primary objective to become the leading telecommunications carrier in ASEAN and help the region become a gateway for better reachability.

Accompanying its investments is a competent workforce comprised of certified and fully trained staff who undergo annual appraisal tests that contribute to individual KPI achievements. “As we are part of an international Group, we like to keep a flat organisational structure. We recognise that staff are a key asset and as such, have made sure that we have subject matter experts on hand to train staff in the necessary areas and beyond if they so wish. We provide incentives for further qualifications beyond what is required and often sponsor staff to complete them. “So far, more than 85 percent of our engineering team have achieved certification from Juniper, Cisco and other network expertise,” comments Saiful. ealink Asia is looking to leverage its reputation as the very first integrated service provider for oil & gas in Asia to enhance its international notoriety even further. Currently serving clients across 20 countries in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, the Company has evolved over the years from being a ship owner and operator in its early days to capitalise on the developing markets in becoming a ship builder in the late 1990s. Under Sealink’s chartering division, areas of anchor handling, transportation of supplies, diving support, towing, mooring maintenance and seismic support are all catered for. From a manufacturing perspective, the aforementioned tugs and landing crafts are complemented by an array of seismic support vessels, barges, chemical tankers and oil carriers. Its more recent maintenance component completes the portfolio being offered by Sealink, creating a diversity that is essential in forming meaningful business partnerships. “We have worked with industry leaders like Shell in specific countries over the years, but it doesn’t

necessarily mean we will obtain business with the same company in a different country,” Hui says. “Therefore, to obtain the first order with a new client or in a new country, it is still difficult and that is where our reputation is most important. “The ability to get that first project is the most important aspect. Because we are vessel owners we don’t bid for the contracts in the prospective overseas countries. We have to work with an agent or the owners there and they will then use our vessel to enter into the tender contract and bid for it.” To put such faith in Sealink’s offering as part of such a process requires a similar trust among clients that the Company adheres to the very latest
industry trends. Currently, these involve issues surrounding efficiency and environmental considerations, as well as optimisation of newer technologies in order to aid the migration from tier 2 to tier 3 engines and ship components; all of which are addressed through close collaboration with said clients. “This is why, for us, we find that the integrated service provider model works best,” Hui notes. “A normal vessel builder bases plans for the yard on maximum profits and to do that you have to make as many repeat vessels as you can. “The problem with that though is you may be building a lot of repeat vessels and the price might come

down, but when the market trends and requirements change, whatever you originally built at a lower cost may no longer be what is expected in the market. “From our interaction with customers, we see what types of vessels will be required in the different regions of the world, in terms of quality and functionality, and can prepare our yard for that.”
Maintaining efficiencies
To facilitate such entrepreneurial and efficient operations, equally wellstrung internal procedures have also been honed over the years , bringing into play carefully planned capital investments - again in line with the most pressing industry trends - as well as refining its employment and supply chain management strategies. “From a capital expenditure perspective, inventory is a big trend with nobody in the industry wanting to stock up while there is a slowdown in shipping activities,” Hui explains. “This means we are just buying what is required to maintain our own efficiencies as well as the efficiencies of our clients.”

Skills development is another facet falling under this philosophy, having overcome market competitiveness in recent years to retain the required skills, quality and experience within the workforce. Now, with the market more settled, the area of staff retention has solidified even further. “Reputation does help in retaining people, but right now, we don’t see a problem in this area because the challenge of new players in the market is very low,” Hui states. “This doesn’t mean that we don’t keep an open communication with employees though, as we always try to know what challenges they have and what

In 2015, one such door has opened in India with SAESL partnering with Tata Technologies to launch a Global Engineering Centre, designed to provide comprehensive services for equipment harmonisation, as well as an improvement in lean operations and turnaround times.
