Verizon Launches Go90 Trial Mobile Video Service Verizon Communications has launched a trial version of its new video mobile service in a bid to be the first telecom player to compete with mobile ad industry titans Google and Facebook The Company’s new “Go90” mobile app has initially been offered to a select number of Verizon customers, with supported advertisements from well-known brands. According to a Company spokesperson, the service could be officially launched to all Verizon users as soon as later this month. Companies from Netflix Inc to Dish Network Corp already offer web-based video services through subscriptions, but Verizon’s ad-

supported, short-form video model seems an unusual approach to a somewhat niche market. “Go90 pits Verizon against internet advertising industry heavyweights Google and Facebook, and advertisers will take a ‘wait and see’ approach to determine how many viewers Verizon captures,” telecom industry consultant, Tim Farrar noted. “Pretty much without exception telecom operators have not been successful as third parties in exploiting the internet access service, whether
it’s video or anything else,” Farrar said. “What percentage of people’s app viewing is going to be over a Verizon app versus YouTube or Facebook...That’s the biggest uncertainty.” Verizon’s Senior Vice President, Brian Angiolet, said that Go90 is to target young viewers, or millennials, with between 100-200 hours of exclusive content from online video networks such as AwesomenessTV and Machinima. The free service will drive all its revenue from data usage and targeted advertising. Since purchasing AOL’s ad technology in June for US$4.4 billion, Verizon is to leverage its expertise in order to have the best chance to prove its advertising potential. These tools from AOL enable Verizon to deliver targeted web and mobile ads. Combine this with Verizon’s customer data skillset and analysts predict that this should improve targeting. Verizon’s rival AT&T Inc has said it also has mobile video services targeting youth in the works. Verizon is currently the only video service to offer advertisers customer data based on location, at the personal level rather than the household level, with unprecedented knowledge of purchase intent and a wealth of demographic and prior purchase information. According to the Company, Go90’s content portfolio will evolve in the coming months, with upcoming digital video service promising content from the National Football League, DreamWorks Animation’s AwesomenessTV unit and Vice Media. As its trial period begins, content partners include Comedy Central, Food Network, ESPN, Discovery Network and VH1. From the web, it will offer videos from Maker Studios, Machinima and StyleHaul, among others.

Arcadis Rebrand Strengthens Global Positioning Arcadis has unveiled its new, refreshed brand identity and will now go to market globally under one brand. The announcement follows two years of investment in joining up its 28,000 people in a single operating model, which enables Arcadis to bring the very best knowledge and technical expertise to clients across the globe. The new brand will be adopted across the 70 countries in which Arcadis operates and will see legacy brands being phased out, including Langdon & Seah, Hyder Consulting,
ARCADIS Logos and EC Harris. Callison and RTKL, Arcadis’ architectural brands, are also merging to create CallisonRTKL. Tableau Marks Singapore’s Golden Jubilee with New Office Tableau Software unveiled its new office in Singapore in September, as the country celebrated its 50th birthday. The announcement of its new 50,000 square foot office underscored the importance of Singapore as Tableau’s regional hub. When it is fully opened, the new office will have capacity for more than 300 employees. APAC is a key region for Tableau; and contributing to Tableau’s increasing relevance in the region is the recognition by more organisations of the benefits of having self-reliant, data-driven strategies. An IDC study commissioned by Tableau this year found that firms which enable their employees to access and analyse data for themselves are twice as likely to outperform organisations that don’t.

JCB Commits To Indonesia at Mining Indonesia 2015 JCB Southeast Asia unveiled its ‘Dancing Diggers’ to the Asian market at the Mining Indonesia 2015 show in September, marking its first appearance at the prestigious event held in Jakarta. Tom Cornell, Managing Director of JCB Southeast Asia said: “Indonesia is a strategic priority for JCB and we understand the specific challenges faced by customers in Indonesia. With that in mind, we are continuously expanding the dealers’ network across the country to provide excellent service coverage and a parts distribution network.” At the show, JCB also launched its comprehensive range of products tailored specifically to the Indonesian construction and mining sectors, along with presenting an innovative new telematics machine. According to a new report from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Hong Kong will expect to see more than 40 percent of its population above the age of 60 by 2050, which will demand major societal changes. “Today, most people, even in the poorest countries, are living longer lives,” says Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. “But this is not enough. We need to ensure these extra years are healthy, meaningful and dignified. Achieving this will not just be good for older people, it will be good for society as a whole.” The report says that realigning health systems to the needs of older people will be crucial, in addition to the need for governments around the world to develop long-term care systems. This will require a shift from systems that are designed around curing acute disease, to systems that can provide ongoing care for the chronic conditions that are more prevalent in older age. Initiatives that have already proved successful can be expanded and introduced in other countries.

KONE to Supply Elevators to Masteri Thao Dien in Ho Chi Minh City KONE has signed a deal to supply 40 elevators to Masteri Thao Dien, a luxury residential development in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Situated in front of Hanoi Highway, Masteri Thao Dien will house high-end apartments, commercial offices, a shopping centre and other recreation facilities such parks, swimming pools, a playground and sport centre in an eight-hectare site. The shopping centre, Vincom Mega Mall Thao Dien, an investment of Vingroup, will be the biggest shopping centre in the east of Ho Chi Minh City and will be linked to the An Phu metro station that is due to commence operations in 2018. “We are extremely pleased that Masteri Thao Dien chose KONE as its supplier for this project and serve the growing urban population of Ho Chi Minh City with our pioneering ecoefficient solutions,” commented Neeraj Sharma, Executive Vice President for KONE Asia Pacific and Middle East.

The streaming service has big plans for Singapore , with plans for this office to become the hub for its expanding operations in Asia. “As the central hub in Southeast Asia, Singapore is a sophisticated and diverse place that will find much

INNOVATION Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan are at the front of the pack as Asia’s innovation leaders, according to 2015’s Global Innovation Index Writer: Dr. Rafael Escalona Reynoso, Lead Researcher at The Global Innovation Index
ith half of its economies ranked in the top 40, Southeast Asia and Oceania maintain their innovation dynamism this year, according to The Global Innovation Index (GII), 2015. Recognised as a hub for technology and innovation, the region is home to some of the world’s largest and most prosperous economies; namely Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong (China) are helping set the pace of innovation globally and are noted to be major contributors to industrial-commercial growth and prosperity in the region. In innovation, the region’s performance is led by high-income economies like Singapore, South Korea and Japan. These nations perform above the regional average in all areas measured by the GII and are on-par with nations at the top of the global rankings. This is especially true for human capital and research, and infrastructure, two of the pillars of the GII, areas in which these nations perform above the global leader, North America. Singapore, in particular, brings to the

The GII surveys 141 economies around the world, half of which are from Southeast Asia
region outstanding performances in infrastructure and business sophistication, categories in which it holds the highest rankings globally. The GII, which is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and surveys 141 economies around the world, shows how China and Malaysia, two upper-middle income economies, also help boost the region’s innovation performance. These two are the only non-high-income nations approaching the top 25 economies in the rankings. China displays a strong performance in areas associated with knowledge and technology outputs and is also highest among the middle-income economies in terms of quality of innovation. Quality, in this sense, is measured by high rankings in three indicators: University rankings, patent families filed in at least three offices and citable documents. China ranks globally 11th, 29th and 16th, respectively. Malaysia, on the other hand, holds the top spot in both net high-tech imports and exports, and also makes the top 10

in quality of innovation for middleincome economies. Slightly further down the rankings, however, are a series of fast-moving economies, and these are the ones to watch. Although most of these economies perform below the region’s average in all GII pillars, they exhibit notable performance progress in certain areas. This group is led by a subset comprised of Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia. For example, Vietnam shows strength in knowledge and technology outputs, an area in which it performs above the region’s average. It also performs well in the indicators of credit and

notable because it shows the widest margin of improvement in the region. And there is potential for further progress with common areas of opportunity for this entire cluster including institutions, human capital and research, and infrastructure. These areas are critical for the development of a solid innovation framework as illustrated by growth in other regions. In particular, a more solid institutional framework helps attract business and fosters growth by offering better governance and adequate levels of protection and incentives for innovation. In order
to make human capital and research prosper, higher standards in education and research activity – determinants for local innovation – are key. Effective and ecologically-friendly communication, transport, and energy infrastructure facilitate the production and exchange of ideas, services and goods. They also feed into the innovation system by enabling increased productivity and efficiency, lower transaction costs, better access to markets and sustainable growth. For some nations in this emerging cluster, innovation is viewed as essential to addressing
pressing societal problems such as pollution, health issues, poverty, and unemployment. GII analysis also shows that increasing business linkages to science and its institutions - including foreign subsidiaries and the recruitment of scientists - is often the single biggest challenge in developing economies. The design of policies to promote innovation while taking into account these factors is central to the advancement of local plans and strategies in these nations. These are all areas of opportunity that, if addressed locally, can help further boost Southeast Asia and Oceania’s innovation performance. The latest GII also highlights a number of nations that have, in recent years, shown a consistency in innovation performance as compared with their income group peers. Within this cluster, four economies from the Southeast Asia and Oceania region have been identified: China, Malaysia, Mongolia and Vietnam. Since 2011, these countries have displayed a

measured capacity to innovate above their expected level of economic development and have consistently excelled above their peers in various areas measured by the GII. For these economies a continuity of efforts and practices can guarantee their position at the forefront of innovation globally, further helping the region to maintain its notable innovation performance. While large upper-middle income economies are clearly the innovation motor of Southeast Asia and Oceania, there is clearly a dynamic group of middle and lower income nations that are helping boost the region’s overall performance. Recent structural changes at the core of economies like China, Japan and South Korea will continue to foster suitable

‘Recent structural changes at the core of economies like China, Japan and South Korea will continue to foster suitable environments for industry and commerce in the region’ environments for industry and commerce in the region. These nations’ abundant natural resources and plentiful supplies of relatively low-cost skilled and adaptable labour will also allow for their innovation performance to thrive in years to come. As for those emerging economies in the region, it is critical that they explore avenues to achieve higher levels of innovation-led development locally and more efficiently. We can see from The Global Innovation Index 2015 that a well-coordinated innovation policy plan with clear targets and a matching institutional structure have proven

to be an adequate tool for success, especially for economies at lower levels of development. And while significant resources are often devoted to attracting foreign multinationals and investments, policymakers in developing countries should also consider how to capture and maximise knowledge spill-overs to the local economy. enhancement of these types of policies at national level could have a dual benefit, helping bolster innovation performance not only in the country itself but in the region as a whole. The Future of Online Grocery Shopping Markus Bihler, Group CEO and Co-Founder of HappyFresh says that the Company is to play a key role in influencing the future of food shopping habits in Southeast Asia, starting with its ecommerce fresh grocery service Writer: Emily Jarvis echnology is transforming the way the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry operates, and although this change has been more evolutionary than revolutionary, there is no doubt that digital is redefining what it means to go shopping; the lines between the physical and digital worlds are blurring. FoodTech Company, HappyFresh has chosen to capitalise on this developing online fresh grocery ecommerce trend, as the first and fastest-growing online grocery platform delivering foods across Southeast Asia. Asia Outlook spoke to Group CEO and Co-Founder of HappyFresh, Markus Bihler on the popularity of online shopping and its plans to change the future of online shopping. Asia Outlook (AsO): Talk me through the initial premise when starting HappyFresh? Markus Bihler (MB): Imagine a grocery store where you can receive

personal recommendations and offers the moment you step in the store, where checkout takes seconds and you can pay for groceries without ever taking out your wallet. I still remember flying into Jakarta for the first time, only to be stuck in traffic for three hours on my way into town. You combine this infrastructural challenge with my very heartfelt dislike for the activity of shopping and love of cooking and you have the core of HappyFresh’s ecommerce service offering: fresh groceries to your doorstep; picked for you by a professional shopper and delivered to your doorstep within one hour. The name was chosen to function as a matter of fact label that states what’s in the box, and HappyFresh, I would argue, is a name that does exactly that. AsO: How did you know that an ecommerce grocery store would be a
success? MB: Online grocery shopping is particularly popular in Asia, where

the continued increase in mobile adoption and broadband penetration, particularly in the developing regions, has also helped boost online grocery sales. Regionally, Asia-Pacific consistently exceeds the global average for adoption of all online retailing options. Ordering online for home delivery is the most commonly preferred flexible retailing option in the region. Moreover, customers are also becoming very selective when it comes to quality foods. A Nielsen study shows that today’s shoppers are seeking fresh, natural and minimally processed foods with beneficial ingredients that help fight disease and promote good health. This presents tremendous opportunity among niche consumer segments, especially in the healthy eating space and other categories that may be more difficult to find on in-store shelves. As a result, a number of specialty retailers have emerged in the health and wellness space, from national online grocery delivery services with extensive fresh sections to local produce delivery services.

From here, we looked at the basics. With the growing number of smartphone users, we had to make sure that enough of these potential customers were motivated enough to utilise our service. Internally, we had to make sure that we partnered with enough high quality and popular retailers with a broad assortment of produce. AsO: Why did you choose to locate the HappyFresh headquarters in Indonesia? MB: Southeast Asia is a wonderful region that is full of exciting metropolitan cities with very rich culinary traditions and an interesting culture. Indonesia and the rest of Southeast Asia is a very exciting market for us. We have encountered a great community of start-ups and pool of local and international talent. The outlook for the retail industry in Southeast Asia has never been more promising, with online retail now beginning to emerge. There are opportunities abound in this region with its sophisticated food-loving consumers, growing populations and steady economies. In Indonesia for example, middle and upper income consumers will continue to drive the growth of modern, online retailers. Customers are increasingly qualityconscious, demanding higher levels of service and demand for processed foods and dairy is growing, particularly in urban areas, driven by changing lifestyles as people work longer hours and seek greater convenience. AsO: In what countries is the HappyFresh service now available? MB: We are now active in Indonesia (Jakarta), Malaysia

Reaching a whole new demographic of customers
(Kuala Lumpur), Thailand (Bangkok) and soon in Taiwan (Taipei). Our plan is to become Southeast Asia’s leading food marketplace company, and we want to operate in all major, trafficcongested mega cities in the region. Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta are very interesting markets for us. Spending power and credit card penetration are higher in Kuala Lumpur than in Jakarta, and in general people are more used to buying things online there. Jakarta, on the other hand, is interesting because we really feel we can solve a huge problem here. We all know about the infrastructure challenges this city faces and the

traffic problems this often leads to. That’s why we think HappyFresh will have a big impact here; it’s one less trip you need to make, which often translates into several hours saved that you can now spend on things you would rather be doing. For retailers who already have an online shopping platform, we can provide an additional sales channel to reach a whole new demographic of customers that they may not have been able to reach before. AsO: How does HappyFresh differentiate itself from regional competition? MB: We are aware that many countries in which we operate

AsO: What do you think the future holds for online shopping and in-store digital technology and what will this mean for retail in Asia? MB: In the past, home delivery of milk and other daily necessities became a staple for many families. In some markets, the milkman never really went out of fashion; the concept of a merchant delivering groceries and household staples or ready cooked meals to a home is very much alive and well. We are seeing a resurgence of the home delivery model, with a twist. Consumers aren’t just picking up the phone to order; they’re increasingly going to the retailer’s webpage or using their mobile app. The milkman is back, but this time, he’s gone digital. Increasingly, retailers are introducing ecommerce models that make it even easier for tech-savvy, time-crunched consumers to get the items they need. Therefore, it is critical that retailers and manufacturers understand how these consumers are using technology.

Sustainability at the Heart of Peninsular Malaysia

Veolia Water Technologies is to bring the first fully integrated commercial water reclaim programme to Southeast Asia to sustainably combat the region’s water shortages Writer: Veolia Water Technologies ith growing global demands from agricultural and energy sectors, as well as diminishing supply due to climate changes and reduced rainfall, water is quickly becoming a scarce resource with no alternative substitute. In light of this challenge, awareness has been growing towards the notion of water reuse. Although it is not a new concept, water reuse only started to garner stronger public interest in recent years, offering an alternative sustainable resource opportunity in a world where water is increasingly in short supply. As shortages become more acute over the next 10 years, governments and multinational corporations (MNCs) worldwide have started to buckle down and look for ways to manage the remaining water reserves. In embarking on this path, many have turned to professional water solutions providers to mitigate the crisis. In line with this, Veolia Water Technologies, a global leader in optimised resource management, was appointed to provide a wastewater treatment and reclamation plant for the prestigious Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) Project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In addition to being the first fully integrated commercial water reclaim programme in Southeast Asia, the TRX Project is also one of Veolia’s most significant global projects in sustainable development.

Efficient solution
After several rigorous rounds of selection, Veolia secured a 20-year partnership with TRX. Set in the
heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the TRX Project is an iconic 70-acre development poised to be the new world-class financial district that encompasses investment grade A office space incorporating residential, hospitality, retail, leisure and cultural offerings. TRX is to support the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley, one of the National Key Economic Areas under the Malaysian government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), an initiative to support the government’s vision of transforming Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020. Elaborating on the strict and controlled nature of the initial selection process, Akhir shared: “We

were upfront about our expertise with wastewater and water reclaim projects, and were also forward about Veolia’s ability to meet TRX’s expectations of 60 percent reduction in total fresh water demand. “Veolia’s approach to this project was simply to achieve a high recovery rate and low operating cost, achieving a uniquely affordable yet efficient solution for TRX.” As Malaysia’s new international finance and trading hub, the TRX Project is designed in accordance with the highest environmental standards, and the development will focus keenly on water reuse. The Project is the first development in the country to achieve multiple accreditations, including the

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification in the ‘Neighbourhood Development Plan’ category and the first township level Green Building Index (GBI) Platinum Certification in Malaysia. Globally, Malaysia is one of the wettest countries with the highest average annual rainfall of around 3,000mm. Despite this, the once waterabundant Malaysia is now rapidly facing water scarcity threats as Duncan Briggs, Commercial Director at Veolia Water Technologies explained: “The growing water stress in Malaysia is a real challenge. By engaging in water reclamation activities, we maximise the water value for non-potable purposes at TRX.

Creating value
For the TRX Project, Veolia aims to recover at least 80 percent of the expected 3.8 million cubic meters of sewage generated every year for reuse purposes within the TRX district. The reclaimed water will count towards reducing site-wide fresh water demand by more than 50 percent, exceeding international best practice standards of 40 percent reduction in potable water. To deliver the results that TRX strived for, Veolia proposed a redundant system with five wastewater solutions for maximum value to the client, described by Briggs as being “compact, robust, and straightforward”. The primary wastewater treatment solution for the TRX Project is Multiflo™, an efficient process for removing total suspended solids (TSS), colour, algae and heavy metals. The technology produces a highly concentrated and thickened sludge

required for the wastewater treatment process. The discharge then enters the MBBR tank, which stabilises discharge quality while it removes chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and nitrogen present in the wastewater. Alizair® deodorisation treatment

will also be incorporated to ensure the complete removal of unpleasant emissions. As the wastewater treatment plant will be built within the TRX district, Veolia integrated a biofilter that would oxidise malodorous substances into inorganic and odourless compounds. Veolia

its status as a major hub for trade,” Sarmiento highlights. “However, this has placed increased pressure on the ports, and the port congestion experienced in Manila last year has put a dampener on attracting increased trade. However, I am confident this challenge will be overcome and we as a Company have positioned our agents to cater for the expected increase in inter-ASEAN trade,” he adds. In order to capitalise on these regional trade prospects, the Company is expanding its cold storage offering, from 9,000 to 17,000 pallet positions in an investment worth US$ 18 million. “We remain focused on our newly signed project contracts and developing the branches we have in Visayas and Mindanao into self-sustained locations capable of generating their own revenues. New Guinea alone now forms 90 percent of High Arctic’s operations, a business model which has been hugely successful as a result of the Company’s innovative approach and solutionsdriven culture. “In Papua New Guinea we have specialist drilling rigs that operate like any other but are heli-portable,” Greer explains. “The locations we operate at sit on top of mountains with no road support, so whereas a regular land or onshore oil & gas rig breaks down into components in the 40-50 tonne range, ours breakdown into four tonne loads so we can still load and transport them underneath a helicopter between mountain tops.” Maguire adds: “Our niche is working in places where the logistical terrain challenges make it really difficult to work and Papua New Guinea certainly falls into that category. “Everywhere we work is

disconnected from anywhere else we work, so what we’ve done in PNG is different to any other previous expansion, in that we’ve taken our specialist technical services but have then adapted them to overcome the challenges of a mountainous jungle environment.”

Good news travels fast and bad news travels really fast, so the last job is your reputation and that’s what we pride ourselves on.” Maguire adds: “Due to the market slowdown, there are now several rigs sitting idle in Papua New Guinea and we like to think that the fact that we are very solutions-driven and focus on efficiencies and close collaboration with our customers is what makes us the only drilling contractor drilling holes in PNG today.”

Game-changing capital investment
12 MONTHS Time the Company spent rebuilding two rigs and reengineering them to work safely in PNG
The Company’s aforementioned work alongside Interoil has been particularly indicative of High Arctic’s approach since it entered the Papua New Guinean market, working alongside the operator on its significant Triceratops-3 site to give the Company its biggest year to date. “Across the second half of last year up until now we have brought two new drilling rigs into the country, with the total spend across the two amounting to around US$75 million; incorporating procurement, refurbishment, shipping, transportation, warehousing and all other aspects involved,” Maguire says. Scouting worldwide for the

optimum rig to utilise for the project, High Arctic discovered a game-changer in regards to expanding its footprint in the country, renovating and shipping two rigs found in Brazil to advance the Company’s already unique service offering for its customers. “We spent close to 12 months rebuilding these rigs and reengineering them to work safely in PNG. Interoil worked with us throughout and supported the process fully, leading them to be very happy with what they’ve seen from us at Triceratops-3,” Maguire enthuses. A further game-changing capital investment in recent years has seen the introduction of Dura-Base Composite Mats, spending $35 million over the past five years in addressing terrain challenges and the instability that comes from heavy rainfall and regular land slippage. Maguire continues: “There hasn’t been any oil & gas drilling done in Papua New Guinea in the past five years that hasn’t been done on top of Dura-Base Mats, and this goes hand in hand with the rigs we operate in the country in terms of reducing the amounts of non-productive time, easing logistical challenges and making our customers’ operations more efficient.”

Sustainable legacy
The difficulties encountered within Papua New Guinea don’t just end at environmental considerations either, with the population scattered around the country in villages and land-dwellings an equally significant consideration for a Company looking to make a positive impact. Continuous engagement and enrichment has therefore become one of the most pivotal facets of High Arctic’s continuous improvement strategy to ensure that all work carried out is not only done fairly, equitably and efficiently, but is ideally done so by local citizens. Greer states: “Across our Papua New Guinea operation, we have around 400 personnel, 325 of whom are PNG citizens. “It’s incredibly important - and one of our core beliefs that we are a sustainable employer here, so we hire locally from the regions we operate in and train them; in some cases from entry level all the way to front-line operators, as trade-qualified technicians, and ultimately into crew supervisors.” This same local ethos is applied within High Arctic’s supply chain and formulation of business partnerships where the Company sources locally wherever possible, and subsequently enjoys longstanding relationships with a host of local businesses and landowner companies.

“We’re very proud of this legacy, and we have people working for us who have been here since the first day we started operations in Papua New Guinea,” Maguire says. “If it wasn’t for the local community, we’d have never got successfully off the ground to begin with. “We were given a lot of support from the local chamber and a lot of the local business community has helped steer us towards a position where we could introduce necessary services and attract the right kind of people who share our culture and our vision.”

The sustainability and longevity that High Arctic’s commitment to innovation, finding solutions and local enrichment brings will undoubtedly continue to stand the Company in good stead over the coming years, and especially once the commodity market becomes more amenable again. However, the track record and portfolio that has been attained in the process is likely to have even more positive ramifications, as the Company’s reputation translates across to the wider Asian continent. “In the short-term the plan is to consolidate our position in Papua New Guinea,” Greer notes. “We’ve had a big year of growth which is now playing out, but as the commodity market improves in neighbouring countries, the methodology and approach that we’ve been successful with in PNG allows us to look at other Southeast Asian countries, which is where we’ll be looking for future growth.” Maguire continues: “We don’t differentiate ourselves in PNG through our provision of drilling services. We do so through delivering these services efficiently and cost effectively in some of the harshest environments in the world.” With much of Southeast Asia dense in rainforest and remote, challenging environments, the opportunity to

replicate its success and track record on a wider scale is a seemingly natural progression, with Papua New Guinea having provided the perfect platform for High Arctic Energy Services to broaden its legacy, and spread its solutions-driven philosophy to more customers than ever before. “We’ve always been a solutionsfocused Company and that’s part of the legacy from when we started as a private business in 1993,” Maguire concludes. “We’ve seen that if we can provide solutions in these harsh environments for our customers, where there’s a lack of infrastructure, then it creates a sense of partnership. “Every senior member of staff here has got vast experience in the global oil & gas industry over many years, but the relationship that we enjoy with our customers here at High Arctic is something I’ve not experienced before.”

n 2013, Myanmar’s President, Thein Sein signed into effect the Telecom Law, constituting one of the last true greenfield telecom opportunities in the world. As part of the country’s continuing effort to open up to the rest of the world through foreign investment opportunities, the new Law provided an exciting opportunity for telecommunications start-up Company, Apollo Towers. Founded in 2013 by telecom veteran, Sanjiv Ahuja - who is well regarded in the industry through his former position as Chief Executive Officer of Orange, in addition to his position as Chairman of Eaton Towers in Africa – Apollo Towers Myanmar was comprised of a number of experienced senior decision makers from the very beginning, demonstrating its broad understanding of the tower industry and exhibiting the entrepreneurial talents needed to operate in emerging markets. experience came an equally impressive support structure in the form of major shareholder TPG, a US-based private equity firm which has around $70-80 billion assets under management globally. “Apollo Towers sits within the TPG Growth Fund which focuses predominantly on Southeast Asia. And in July this year, we were pleased to announce Myanmar Investments Limited as a new shareholder; an AIM-listed private equity Company based here on the ground in Yangon,” comments Henry Butler, Corporate Finance Manager of Apollo Towers Myanmar. Having now been in business for more than 18 months, the Company has the largest portfolio of towers among the four telecommunications companies in the country, having recently completed its first order for more than 1,000 for Norway’s Telenor. “We are now building a second order for 700 towers for the same client, with the aim of completing these by the end of this year,” Butler says.

Although Myanmar shares some of the same characteristics and many of the same challenges that would be expected from an Asian frontier market, the country is also set apart from its Southeast Asian neighbours in a number of ways, including through the rapid pace of technological evolution. Butler highlights: “Myanmar has skipped many of the stages of the technology revolution that we have witnessed in other Southeast Asian countries; consider the fact that Telenor started by providing both 2G and 3G upon entering the market, but are now setting up 3G equipment for example. signs of slowing down, the industry requires a strong backbone of tower infrastructure to facilitate this demand. “This means more towers and showcases the great potential in Myanmar. More than 5,000 towers have already been built here and this is only just the beginning. It is the operator’s aim to build up to around 18,000 towers in the next three years to achieve the target of 95 percent coverage, so there is still a great deal of investment to come,” Luxcey further details.

Working in tandem
Drawing on the similarities between emerging economies, Apollo Towers’ team was bolstered with experience and training from four reputable giants known in both regions; namely Leadcom, Camusat, GTL and iEngineering. “All of these companies have significant experience operating and building in emerging markets in Africa and Asia, as well as Eastern Europe, so for them Myanmar was just a new country and was not an exceptional challenge,” Butler emphasises. “There was no tower building background in Myanmar like in Africa where you have contractors who move from one operator to another. Here the country was opening up so everything was new, which meant that all players were continuously learning and improving their processes. It was a big adjustment, but now it’s working well and we are already seeing more streamlined processes, particularly around site acquisition.” Again pairing similarities with many African nations, and indeed the world, Apollo Towers places a concerted focus on employing Myanmar nationals; hiring a total of 111 permanent staff, of which 83 are local.

“And we want this number to grow,” Luxcey adds. “Although we had to rely on expatriates to begin with, our goal now is to always hire a Myanmar local when we can, and to upskill our existing Myanmar employees to the levels you would see in any international company. Ultimately, the aim is to leave Apollo Towers in the hands of the Myanmar people.” Moreover, by providing language lessons to any Myanmar staff that want to participate and supporting staff who want to take professional exams, amongst other things, Apollo Towers is able to retain most of its workforce for the long-term. “It is worth noting that we are also attentive to social issues related to our activities and try and make a difference wherever we can. We believe our main contribution can come through the way we operate and the work that we provide to local communities,” explains Luxcey.

Motor Starting and Stopping
oth in low and medium voltages, three-phase induction motors are the most widely used, due to their availability, simplicity, robustness and low cost. Despite these advantages of the “industrial-standard-motors”, their operation presents great challenges for many companies, especially regarding motor starting and stopping. Companies are able to handle these challenges depending on their specific conditions. During direction line (DOL) starting and stopping, low and medium voltage motors experience starting currents of up to eight times the nominal current, high acceleration rate or high torque. These characteristics cause voltage dips in the network as well as mechanical wear, and in some cases,

destruction of equipment; for example the gearing, couplings, shafts, belts or fragile parts of products. One of the most common problems during motor starting and stopping is the so-called water hammer in pipelines, caused by sudden reduction of flow rate during sudden stopping of the pump. Although the motorpump combination is hardly under any mechanical stress, this is not the case for the valves, and the pipeline. A repair of such equipment is very timeconsuming and costly.
Raising regulatory requirements
Utilities and regulatory bodies are also steadily raising the requirements for three-phase induction motors. Various EU-regulations aim to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The “Amendment 04/2014”, following the IEC 60034-30:2008, deals with the energy consumption, energy efficiency and energy classes (IE) of threephase induction motors. Hereby the following classification is established: • IE1 (Standard Efficiency) • IE2 (High Efficiency) • IE3 (Premium Efficiency) • IE4 (Super Premium Efficiency)

Network operators
Additionally, the instability of power grids has considerably increased since adding renewable energy providers. This is why network operators have introduced more restrictive rules for adding new consumers especially with electrical drives that use soft starters and frequency converters for motors with a voltage rating higher than 1 kV. Most technical instructions and addition requirements already include these regulations.
Star-delta-starter
To start and stop motors in a way that is both technically and energy efficient – and several starters and starting methods are advisable – the commonly used star-delta-starter is often given the preference, due to its low space requirement and low cost as well as its

not to be underestimated. Also, high torque and current peaks during the switchover are possible. Altogether, an optimal motor protection is only possible with further components, i.e. further costs. The Basic Unit contains the system cabinet, the energy distribution components and the cable connection compartment

Like the star-delta-starter, the autotransformer starter offers a reduced starting current. However, it requires a lot of space in the switchboard and is comparatively expensive. The limited allowable number of starts each hour limits the suitability of this solution for more demanding applications. For this

reason, and because the switchover of the starting characteristic is only possible utilising electro-mechanical devices, auto transformer starters are used less and less.
Frequency converters
Many companies use frequency converters for their drives. Strong arguments in its favour are the continuously adjustable motor start keeping nominal torque, as well as the also continuously adjustable and therefore precise speed control. This way, the frequency converter enables a direct regulation of the currently needed torque by permanently adjusting the voltage and frequency. This leads to an improvement of the mechanical efficiency in the entire drive train. However, every light has its shadow. As the frequency converters need a controlling-system, companies are faced with considerable costs. To prevent storage damage, motors - which operate with a frequency converter - need isolated storage space, which increases the cost of the motor. Also, the efficiency of the frequency converter, especially in the lower-end application, leaves a lot to be desired. Electrical losses can be as high as five percent. Furthermore, the converter can be a high EMI-load for the network. The high heat generated alongside reduced torque can also be critical.
Soft starter

A more economical alternative to the aforementioned starting methods is the soft starter. Due to the used semiconductor technology, the soft starter does not need much maintenance and offers different starting and stopping performance. The starting phase lasts for a maximum period in the range of 30 seconds, after which the soft starter is switched to the bypass mode. Accordingly, EMI-loads to the network only occur while starting and stopping.

In the meantime, heat dissipation is only generated during the short period of starting and stopping phases. This is how the soft starter altogether reduces mechanical stress. In comparison to the frequency converter, the soft starter is not only of a much smaller build, but also can boast efficiency above 99 percent. The settings of starting and stopping parameters are easy to handle. By this feature, voltage control and voltage ramp can be individually defined. Due to these characteristics, soft starters nowadays are used in almost all industrial applications, especially for drives that require a soft torque process or reduction of starting currents as well as weak networks. In comparison to the frequency converter, the soft starter can claim a much lower failure rate, so that its failure rates are considerably below those of the converter. The reason behind this is the built-in Thyristors, which are more reliable and soft starters are not equipped with IGBTs.

Analogue and digital
For simple applications with small to medium power below 250 kW, the manufacturer offers analogue soft starter units with two-phase control, which are generally without integrated bypass-contactor. Those units are easier to handle and are promoted as an alternative to the star-delta starter. An added advantage is that only in-line connection is required, eliminating the need for six-wire connection dictated by star-delta configuration. In low voltage and medium voltage installations, digital soft starter units with three-phase control, are used for demanding industrial applications. The units offer adjustable current-limits and complete motor protection, such as

Operators can establish communication links with the digital soft starter units utilising the field buses’ communication ports installed. In the low-voltage range the units can be configured either as in-line connection
or as in-delta connection, meaning time bypass-contactors can be added.
Disadvantages of soft starters
Since soft starting and soft stopping minimises the water hammer effect, a typical application of soft starters is pump starting/stopping. Furthermore, soft starter units are used to soft start/ soft stop fans, compressors, milling

machines, screw conveyors, blowers, agitators, mixers and in some cases belt conveyors. The disadvantage of the soft starter technology compared to the frequency converter, it is not able to control the speed and thus not suitable for applications requiring speed control. When starting loads have high inertial torque - for example in ball mills - it is easily applicable and has to be selected higher in power. If speed control is not required, and it is only desirable to have a soft starting performance with the aim of minimising electric network disturbance as well as mechanical wear, the soft starter is the obvious choice. The soft starter technology by IGEL Electric has proven itself over the years and is used all over the world, both in low voltage as well as mediumvoltage applications. Units of up to 14 MW have been successfully installed and tested.

Specialising in the repair and overhaul of Rolls-Royce’s Trent aero engine assortment - including the Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800 and Trent 900 for both Airbus and Boeing aircraft - the Company’s growth is evidence enough of the operational excellence achieved since its inception in 2001; subsequently carrying out work on more than 2,000 engines for clients across three continents. In 2015, one such door has opened in India with SAESL partnering with Tata Technologies to launch a Global Engineering Centre, designed to provide comprehensive services for equipment harmonisation, as well as an improvement in lean operations and turnaround times. As part of the deal, Tata will help to enhance the internal processes that go into the complex manufacturing of Trent engines, paying special attention to tooling and manufacturing, engineering services, technology consulting and component repair; agreed upon under the GEC (Group

recent Tata partnership. Such a commitment to operational excellence is compounded by its up-skilling of employees, and general dedication to enhancing the talent pool within the sector and region. Known and named as a ‘Centre of Excellence’, the training of employees is key to ensure that the end products do remain equally excellent, and the sustainability of this approach has recently been addressed by another pivotal initiative being undertaken alongside Rolls-Royce. Supported by International Component Overhaul and Singapore Airlines - as well as European logistics specialists, Kuehne + Nagel - Rolls Royce and SAESL are highlighting the importance of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) in an attempt to encourage students into the aerospace and manufacturing sector in years to come. Ultimately, the Trent 1000 school tour hopes to reach as many as six million people by 2020 through a range of programmes, aided by Rolls Royce’s business partners, to ensure that the currently flourishing industry in Singapore continues to thrive in the future.

At the beginning of 2015, a new test pod was purchased to this end - a joint venture with Rolls Royce - while SAESL is also planning to move into laser repair in order to improve efficiencies by as much as 80 percent. All in all, being stagnant or reactive is not an option, and a further $90 million has been spent in recent months to increase building capacities; investing in a new facility capable of holding more than 300 engines. From a product perspective, there is also a host of new engines in the process of being added to the portfolio, which could give SAESL its most significant rise in business for years.
