Entrepreneurship is all about finding a niche or gap in an established market, but there has never been a sense of scale attached to the concept. An entrepreneur can be a local innovator bringing fresh ideas to a small sector base, or they can be a rich tycoon unveiling a revolutionary technology to millions around the world. It’s often the case therefore, that some entrepreneurs can end up surprised by Universal Robots is merging the best of manual labour and advanced technologies their own success, as their initially humble - yet focused - ambitions suddenly get fast-tracked to widespread international acclaim. In this month’s EME Outlook, we celebrate a fantastic example of such ingenuity and rapid ascent via Universal Robots, a tech success story that went beyond its intended SME audience to reach the factory floors of numerous renowned industry heavyweights. The Company’s simple but effective, flexible, accessible, and easy-to-use robotic arm products have not only given companies a timely nudge towards the benefits of collaborative robotics (cobots) but they’ve done so in a way that the existing labour forces of the world are complemented and enhanced, rather than replaced. Universal Robots helps to kick-start an issue which has a very industrial feel about it this month, as the likes of Valx, Arabian International Company, Impresa Pizzarotti, Gemini Property Developers and YIT Corporation bring their equally enlightening manufacturing and construction ideologies to the page. Elsewhere among our showcasing assortment, we also pay tribute to a Company whose goal is to save lives rather than to enrich enterprise, in the form of Jordan’s leading healthcare institution, the King Hussein Cancer Centre. Outside of the profiles domain, we struggle to conceal the fact that the region is about to enter expo season! It is somewhat becoming tradition for each July’s publication to break records on the Event Focus front, and 2017 is no different as no less than 14 exhibitions, trade shows and interactive forums detail their appeal across sectors including mining, energy, construction, food & drink, oil & gas, aviation, and logistics. Three of these events will be taking place at the ExCel in London, and it is Outlook Publishing’s base camp in the UK where we round off the issue, as we document the success story of airline charterer, SaxonAir and take a look at the oft-mentioned ‘legacy’ of the London Olympic Games, which took place five years ago this August. Aston Martin Confirms Production of First All-Electric Model
Less than two years after being unveiled as a concept, Aston Martin is today confirming that the all-electric RapidE will enter production in 2019. Set for a limited production run of 155 cars, RapidE is Aston Martin’s first all-electric model. As such it spearheads development of the brand’s low- and zero-emission vehicle strategy laid out by Aston Martin’s President and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, in the company’s Second Century Plan. RapidE sees a continuation of the collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering who worked on the original RapidE Concept. Based in Grove, Oxfordshire, Williams Advanced Engineering will assist Aston Martin with the complex task of engineering integration. Based upon the forthcoming Rapide AMR concept, RapidE will
6
deliver four-door sports car looks and dynamics of the Rapide S powered by an all-electric powertrain replacing the six-litre V12 engine. More information will be revealed about
the RapidE’s all-electric powertrain in due course. The instantaneous delivery characteristics of electric motors means the RapidE will offer a unique driving experience of a kind not experienced before in an Aston Martin. Aston Martin President and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, said of the RapidE: “Having unveiled the RapidE Concept back in October, 2015 we reach another milestone with the confirmation that we are now putting the first all-electric Aston Martin into production. RapidE represents a sustainable future in which Aston Martin’s values of seductive style and supreme performance don’t merely co-exist alongside a new zero-emission powertrain, but are enhanced by it. The internal combustion engine has been at the heart of Aston Martin for more than a century, and will continue to be for years to come. RapidE will showcase Aston Martin’s vision, desire and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers.” Paul McNamara, Technical Director at Williams Advanced Engineering said: “Williams Advanced Engineering has always endeavoured to work collaboratively with its customers to meet their sustainability challenges and find energy efficient solutions. For today’s car manufacturers, this is particularly important as legislation demands more energy efficient vehicles. This project with Aston Martin will draw on the extensive battery and EV experience we have accumulated and we are extremely pleased to be supporting this prestigious British company with their future electrification strategy.”

Total to Invest $3.5 Billion over Five Years in Qatari Field France’s Total (TOTF.PA) will invest $3.5 billion over five years in Qatar’s offshore Al Shaheen oilfield and expects to keep production running at 300,000 barrels a day in future, French and Qatari executives said. Total’s investment commitment was announced while Qatar is embroiled in a political crisis. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have imposed sanctions on Qatar accusing it of backing terrorism, a charge Doha denies.
Total CEO, Patrick Pouyanne told a news conference in Doha to mark the inauguration of the joint venture firm that will run the field that the French firm aimed to maintain Al Shaheen’s output at 300,000 bpd for “many years”.
Total won a 30 percent stake in the field last year, while stateowned Qatar Petroleum (QP) holds 70 percent in the joint venture, called North Oil Company (NOC). The previous operator of the field was Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO). QP Chief Executive, Saad al-Kaabi said Total had given the best offer for the field last year and that the new contract would bring Qatar more revenue than the previous deal. He said Total would invest $3.5 billion over the next five years. Pouyanne said Total could invest more in Qatar, as well as in neighbouring UAE. The operation of the Al Shaheen field under the new arrangement runs for 25 years, starting on 14 July.

Google Chooses Koios as its Only Northern Tech Partner A technology firm in the North of England has become one of only seven companies in the whole of the UK to officially partner with Google as a Google Cloud partner. Koios, a Newcastle based technology company, passed a series of rigorous tests to complete the Google Partnership and is now the only Google Partner in the whole of the North East region for cloud services and consultancy. GCP is Google’s industry leading cloud infrastructure platform, competing with Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. GSuite is an integrated office, email and collaborative working toolset. This is a huge boost for the North East firm because it now becomes the sole gateway for Google’s business in the north of England. This remarkable achievement
means that Koios is now a strategically placed partner for Google to deliver developmental and integration work for companies that want to use Google Cloud Services. Koios will be serving an area as far south as the East Midlands and as far north as Berwick. The Company, previously known as SGP Consulting before recently re-branding as Koios, is a software engineering business and has taken advantage of the region’s strengths in this area. The Company has invested heavily in developing young talent.
Koios have focused primarily on improving business systems and performance and excels in areas including manufacturing, fintech, insurance and business process and efficiency. They are currently working on a range of innovative projects including a highly disruptive CCTV monitoring service that will tackle fraudulent injury claims, a system which controls nuclear waste across the globe and chemical data to ascertain water purity.

Study Reveals Digital Drives Nearly Half of UK Business Revenue
TECHNOLOGY
Breakthrough in Digital Transformation A milestone for the digital transformation, Thyssenkrupp Materials Services connects the machinery of the materials division via a new digital platform. Thanks to Toii - the platform - all machines can communicate with each other. Due to predictive maintenance the platform is also supposed to forecast the necessity of machine services in the future. The name chosen by the business area is a double play on words - it spells IIoT backwards, the abbreviation for “Industrial Internet of Things” and it is pronounced like the word “toy”, an indication of how the new platform makes linking heterogeneous machines to existing IT structures “child’s play”. Toii was developed completely in-house by company software engineering experts and tailored to the specific requirements of Materials Services. The machinery belonging to the business area, which focuses on global materials distribution and processing services, is highly diverse, with the machines perform a wide range of tasks.

Pure Storage, the market’s leading independent all-flash data platform vendor for the cloud era, today announced the UK results of Evolution, a groundbreaking independent global research survey that explores the ways in which businesses are balancing infrastructure and applications today and beyond. The independent survey of IT leaders in more than 500 UK businesses showed that data is considered so important to businesses that 70 percent think it should be shown as an asset on the company balance sheet. More striking is that 65 percent think that data is more valuable to their business than the people they employ. Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning have changed the way businesses operate and what it takes to thrive in a digital economy. Digital is now typically driving around half of revenue for UK organisations. However, despite this appetite for digital transformation, UK businesses are in technology investment ‘limbo’ as Brexit and GDPR create confusion around how to proceed and where to invest to drive innovation, whilst remaining compliant.

A European Power Market Designed to Deliver a Clean Future As many as 13 industry leaders and associations have launched ‘Make Power Clean,’ a joint initiative to promote a European electricity market designed to deliver cleaner energy for all. The European Union’s electricity market must become more flexible, secure and sustainable to put Europe on track for the energy transition. Avoiding that State aid, in the form of capacity mechanisms, ends up incentivising the most polluting and less flexible power plants, and is central to meeting this goal. The new ‘Make Power Clean’ initiative strongly supports the European Commission’s proposal for a carbon eligibility criterion in the Regulation on the Internal Market for Electricity: it is a most needed step in the right direction. “We call on the Council and the European Parliament to endorse the 550g CO2/kWh carbon criterion, which is critical to the overall consistency and efficiency of EU climate and energy policy,” a statement said.

Large Energy Consumers Hungry for Green Power Google, Norsk Hydro and Facebook are leading the growing trend of major companies looking to secure reliable and competitive power from renewable energy and reduce the risks associated with fossil fuel-based power

UK Competition Regulator Refers Tesco/Booker Deal for In-depth Probe Britain’s competition regulator has referred supermarket Tesco’s proposed £3.7 billion ($4.75 billion) takeover of wholesaler, Booker to a detailed investigation, ceding to a request from the companies to “fast-track” the process.
supply. 100 top companies including leading industrial players are already committing to procure 100 percent renewable power in the short-term through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The Chemicals industry has also emerged as an actor in renewable energy PPAs. Earlier this year, AkzoNobel led a consortium to procure power from the Bouwdokken Wind Park in the Netherlands as part of a commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it believed that in more than 350 local areas where there is currently an overlap between Tesco shops and Booker-supplied independent grocery retailers, or ‘symbol’ stores, shoppers could face worse terms when buying their groceries. It said there were concerns that if the deal was cleared there was potential for Booker to reduce the wholesale services or terms it offers the ‘symbol’ stores it currently supplies, in order to drive customers to their local Tesco.

UK Energy Network Operators Face Tougher Price Controls from 2021 Britain’s energy network operators face tougher price controls from 2021 as investment costs in the networks have fallen, the energy market regulator said. Energy networks are monopolies so the regulator, Ofgem, sets controls for the maximum amount companies can recover to fund the operation and investment in their networks. However, it said price controls need to evolve to meet the changing needs of an energy system where renewable energy, for example, now accounts for 24 percent of capacity, compared to five percent 10 years ago. “Ofgem is signalling today that companies need to prepare themselves for a tougher round of price controls from 2021,” the regulator said in a statement. France Seeks to make Paris Europe’s Leading Finance Hub France will use “all means” to make Paris Europe’s main post-Brexit financial capital, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said, while international bankers said they wanted to see if such pro-business reforms would stick over time. Eager to attract banking jobs leaving London, Philippe has pledged to reduce the cost of employing financial services staff in France and also committed to keeping the regulatory burden on finance companies competitive. “The message I want to share with you is clear and it is simple: the French Government is committed to boost Paris’ attractiveness by all means,” Philippe told a banking conference in Paris, presenting the package of reforms which includes a cut to payroll tax on high-earning bankers.

TODD WONKKA:
UNDER THE RUG
sychological and satirical fiction writer, Todd Wonkka has released his first novel, Under The Rug, to Inkshares, realising an ambition that has blossomed since his teenage years. The Massachusetts-born author’s opening instalment tells an enthralling tale of Jake, whose traumatic childhood contributes to an addictive search for true loyalty in adult life; “questioning the integrity of his family, substance abuse, sex, and violence” along the way. Jake ultimately “has to make a choice that will change his life forever - acceptance or vengeance?” Throughout Todd’s life, he has travelled, found himself on the music scene, started a family, and currently works as a tennis pro in Rancho Santa Fe, California but the one unwavering draw for him has been the love of writing; listing the likes of Bukowski, Elmore Leonard, Easton-Ellis and Hunter S. Thompson among his influences. “It’s about telling a story with your guts, something that rips the page,” he emphasises as he begins work on his second novel - Tennis Monster - while Under The Rug continues to make headway on Inkshares; a crowdfunding platform set to launch Todd’s dream into mainstream consciousness.

You post a teaser (in my case I’ve posted the prologue and first five chapters for the audience to read), then you spread the word. If you hit your goals you get funded. You can preorder your copy/copies here. Inkshares has two publishing-goaloptions: • If you get 250 pre-orders (Quill) in three months, Inkshares will edit, print and publish it • If you get 750 pre-orders in three months, Inkshares will edit, print, distribute, publish, and give it the full marketing and promotional treatment
Pre-order your copy/copies of Under the Rug at https://www. inkshares.com/books/under-the-rug - Todd Wonkka
What’s important to remember is that authors are not able to fund their own books. At the end of the three months, assuming you’ve hit one of your goals, the book will go into production. If you get less than 250 pre-orders at the end of the three months, then everyone is refunded.

The ‘legacy’ of the London 2012 Olympics was one of the most familiar buzzwords coined during the Games five years ago, but half a decade on, it is still unclear as to whether the real estate market is living up to its billing Writer: Pete Mugleston, Director, Online Mortgage Advisor

he London Olympics in 2012 were a huge success for the country. British athletes took home armfuls of medals, royal honours were handed out left and right and, for a short while, the whole country was filled with a sense of optimism; for both our sporting future and our economic one. In the run-up to the games we heard plenty of talk about how our property market would benefit, buoyed by the huge investment that the Games would provide, and it would appear that the major investment in areas such as Newham, Barking, Dagenham Greenwich, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest did indeed act like a shot in the arm for the local market. Newham has seen property prices leap by 64 percent since the games got underway, 11.2 percent higher than the London average of 52.8 percent, and the national average of 23.96 percent; while Hackney has seen a rise of 66.9 percent. During the games, Eton Manor in Waltham Forest played host to many of the aquatic events, including water polo and synchronised swimming, and the borough has seen the most significant increase in property prices with a jump of more than 76 percent, leaving the average property price currently sitting at a healthy ÂŁ422,333.
A resounding upswing
It’s clear to see the positive impact that the Olympics has, and continues to have, upon the value of property within the areas directly adjacent to the Olympic Park, but high prices do not always indicate a market that’s full of vim and vigour. In the period directly following the games, mortgage approvals actually fell to their lowest point in the past five years; to around 48,000 each month.

Thankfully there began a fairly resounding upswing, and by the beginning of 2014 approvals had leapt to their highest point since the start of the financial crisis in 2007. Following the twists and turns of the past three years, including the Brexit vote, they are currently sitting at around 65,000 a month, more than 10,000 a month higher than they were before the games began.
Reasons to be cheerful
If the Olympics delivered a boost to local property owners, renters haven’t been quite so fortunate though. The notable investment in key areas around the Olympic Park, coupled with a post-Brexit economy and low availability of finance, has seen rents increase; significantly in some areas. Academic insight can give us an idea of how this growth might develop in the coming years, too. A study carried out by China’s HUST in preparation for the Beijing games, deduced that growth following the Olympics should continue for 15 years, and with our own games only five years in the past, we still have plenty of reasons to be cheerful. The areas positively affected by the 2012 games are likely to continue their upward trajectory, with the added bonuses of Cross Rail and Chinese developer, ABP’s £1.7 billion project which aims to breathe new life in Docklands; turning it into an international business centre still on the horizon.

FinTech Hive in collaboration with Accenture to support the growth of FinTech in the region and supporting entrepreneurs and start ups within the space. EME: The Gate Avenue project is said to be the embodiment of DIFC’s vision of the future. How do you believe it unifies the lifestyle you are trying to create? NAK: This helps us demonstrate how DIFC is evolving as far more than the region’s leading financial centre, we
are evolving as a world-class business and leisure destination having invested in innovative developments such as the premium Gate Avenue at DIFC. The new urban premium lifestyle, cultural and entertainment development at the heart of DIFC, is the first of its kind in the region that promises to change the face of urban space and living in Dubai. Set for completion by the end of 2017 and due to open to the public in April, 2018, the project will offer more than 220 dining, boutique, cultural and
EME entertainment options, as well as an iconic new mosque and will be across 650,000 square feet and span 880 metres in total length. It will enhance the existing infrastructure and is set to elevate it into a truly world-class business and lifestyle hub. Gate Village 11, recently renamed The Exchange, is a very attractive addition to our existing Gate Village and highlights our efforts to continuously enhance the appeal of DIFC, a destination beyond a financial centre as part of our broader Masterplan. This latest development is testament to the significant demand for space at DIFC, as we endeavour to further develop our infrastructure and offering to meet the requirements of our growing community, in line with our 2024 strategy. EME: Looking forward, if we were to speak again in three-five years’ time, what progress and development would you hope and expect to be able to report back for Dubai International Financial Centre Authority? NAK: As we move forward in 2017 and beyond, we will continue to embrace the opportunities that are opening up particularly in terms of new technologies and the emerging markets of MEASA. DIFC continues to pursue expansion into new services and sectors within the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region, an area comprising over 72 countries with an approximate population of three billion and nominal GDP of $7.4 trillion. We will continue to evolve as a financial centre and as a destination as we make further investments in our real estate and retail offering. This evolution will be complemented by projects such as the Emirates Towers Business Park, which is set for completion in 2020 and will be part of the DIFC jurisdiction.

ROME HAS QUITE the reputation for its busy and often confusing roads, so before you start-out into the city, it is advisable to collect a map from your hotel to avoid adding unnecessary delays to your busy schedule. One of the real gems on offer when it comes to finding your way around Rome is the Roma Pass. If you’re staying in Rome for more than three days, for the cost of €36 you will be entitled to free admission to the first two museums or archaeological sites visited, full access to public transportation, reduced museum tickets (Vatican Museums not included) and music events. It has to be said that cars are

perhaps the worst way to see Rome, unless you have at least two weeks in the city, in which you can master the complicated Italian way of driving. When driving in Rome, it is commonly accepted that the driving is done in a very chaotic way, and taking it in turns to let people go in front of you is very rare. Also take note to be particularly careful when driving in certain parts of Testaccio, as certain parts are limited purely to residents and therefore you could find yourself with a hefty fine. Taxis are perhaps the most expensive way to get around Rome, however, when taking into account
both the convenience and speed which is important when you need to get across the city to meetings quickly. Rome’s taxis run on meters and will typically only pick you up from taxi stands; these can be found easily all around the city in the piazzas. Once you are in the city centre, it is perhaps most advisable to move around on foot. However, it is important to remember that you will often find yourself sharing space with cars, as the green man light that usually indicates it is safe to cross is the same for traffic turning right. It is definitely important to always be very aware of your surroundings in this city bursting with life.

Automate the World Universal Robots is changing the dynamics of manufacturing; complementing - rather than replacing - the labour force with advanced technologies Writer: Matthew Staff | Production Manager: Tom Arnold
niversal Robots has quickly changed the face of manufacturing automation over the past 12 years via a concerted drive to make robotics more accessible and flexible for businesses of all sizes. Initially targeted towards the SME segment of the market, the Company’s UR3, UR5 and UR10 robotic arm products have not only revolutionised internal processes for the unsung heroes of manufacturing, but are now etching their way into the shop floors of larger industry players as they too search for enhanced agility and more sustainable consumer trend adherences. “It all began in 2003 when I was working at the Technical University of Denmark on various projects, where the idea was to make an easy-to-use and easy-to-programme flexible robot arm that gave more flexibility to the factories and more ownership to people working the robots,” explains the Company’s co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, Esben Ostergaard. Universal Robots officially incepting two years later in 2005, the products
on show and gracing factories today are essentially the ones derived from these projects; as the business opened people’s eyes to the idea of collaborative robotics. “This market is now bigger than the established industrial robot market and we’re still growing and opening up the potential,” Ostergaard continues. “The traditional robots that were built up for automotive domains initially are now too complicated to build and set up in the modern climate and in other sectors, so what we wanted to do was build a new kind of robot; still an arm but much more revolved around flexibility. “Initially we targeted SMEs because we knew that the existing larger robots were geared towards the bigger customers, but we have since realised that the larger companies also have a big need for flexibility. And the reason is that consumer behaviour is changing all the time and they need to be able to react to that. Manufacturing equipment has to be all the more flexible and re-adjustable and it turns out that our products are spot on to meet this need.”

The labour force’s knowledge and expertise is complemented by the robots’ consistency
Combining the best of both worlds
With hindsight it is clear to identify where the gap in the market for Universal Robots laid, but back in 20032005, the Company had to ensure that it conveyed its optimism and ambition for the product to a market relatively unexposed to such a solution. Especially for the SME sector, there was unbound opportunity deriving from companies already feeling disillusioned and displeased with the use of larger industrial integrators; partially because of the lack of ownership, but primarily due to the lack of skills on-hand to manage and operate such machines. With this in mind, the Company embarked on numerous demonstrations to showcase how usable and how much of a gamechanger its product could be. “One project included getting school kids to play Lego robot soccer, programming each player to play in a tournament, and this was all about making programming accessible,” Ostergaard explains. “They had to be able to learn how to programme these robots easily.”
40
WWW.EMEOUTLOOKMAG.COM
Another project revolved around the Danish food industry, where there was certainly a willingness among SMEs to veer away from the traditionally complex robots they’d utilised in the past. Not only did businesses struggle to use, maintain, repair and even operate their older machines, but they also resented having to rely on external input in dealing with these challenges as well. “So we thought if we could provide them with a robot that’s easy to programme and easy to use and install, then it would give them the flexibility as well as the ownership they were looking for,” the CTO adds. “It wasn’t about replacing people who had contributed years of expertise and knowledge, but by simply giving those people a tool to help them apply that knowledge more consistently and efficiently. “We helped to combine the best of both worlds. People know what needs to be done, what quality is required, and what customers want, while the robot is really good at keeping consistency of quality and consistency of flow.”
On Robot brings true collaborative and flexible grippers to cobot arms
are highly flexible and simple enough to be programmed and operated without the need for engineers, helping speed development and affordably automating processes.
Odense has long been known as one of the leading capitals of robotic clusters around the world. The innovative and entrepreneurial mindset surrounding the Danish cluster, fostered Universal Robots, the leading manufacturer of collaborative robots. On Robot is yet another exciting and successful story, as the Company is quickly making a global impact on the emerging market of cobots.
Creating more jobs On Robot’s flagship product, the RG2, that was launched back in 2015, is currently used in more than 40 countries, with a strong demand from SMEs that are looking for more cost-effective grippers that offer additional capabilities and are easier to use. In 2016, the Company released the Dual RG2 gripper configuration, which is just as easy to mount and control as the single, requires no extra cables and improves production time. This year, On Robot is introducing the RG6 gripper, which has a wider stroke and higher payload, and all the unique features the RG2 introduced.
On Robot has brought to the market grippers that are more user-friendly, flexible and safe to work alongside humans. Compared to traditional gripping solutions, that often require complex cabling, external power and air supply, the On Robot grippers work right out of the box and straight into the production line. The ambition behind the development of the gripper was to provide a cable free gripping solution, that does not require a high level of expertise to install and operate. “We have made our grippers so user-friendly that the employees will be able to get involved in the work with cobots. This also means that instead of being intimidated by the technology, the employees become really engaged and fascinated by the possibilities and even get ideas on how to optimise and develop their production,” says Kenneth Bruun Henriksen, Head of Sales, Europe. On Robot’s grippers integrate seamlessly with the whole range of UR robots. They are mounted directly on the cobot arm,
The On Robot grippers enable companies to become even more cost-efficient and have helped several medium-sized productions save the time and resources vital to staying competitive. Henriksen explains: “There are so many benefits of investing in collaborative technology; it saves your staff from exhausting and monotonous work and, though many worry this will cost them their job. Statistics show that collaborative technology leads to a larger workforce because it leads to better competitiveness and greater production.”

Automation to the world
Despite the Company now able to boast around 60 percent of the collaborative robot (cobot) market share, its entrepreneurial origins are still very much at the forefront of considerations, and Ostergaard and his team have subsequently introduced two new, major initiatives to ensure continuous improvement moving forward. First, is the Company’s Universal Robots Academy (UR Academy). “It is an online training platform where we offer free education in robot programming,” he details. “It’s important because what we want to do is get people using robots on the shop floor and to be robot programmers able to optimise these tools. “We don’t want companies to replace people with robots, we want to make sure that there is enough

In doing that, the Company has enabled itself to focus on its core strength - creating axles - and utilising its suppliers to support the surrounding needs. “Previously we have just focused our core strength in axle production in Europe, however, now we are looking to branch our operations outside of Europe to areas that currently require European specifications of axles,” adds Van Willigen. “A prime example of this is in China where our mother company is based; it is now following the European specifications and selling axles for the domestic market, enabling the end users to be privy to the use of low maintenance axles.” Other markets that Valx is looking to branch into outside of Europe are South Korea and South Africa - among others - while also exploring the other

This project changed the lives of many Italian citizens and together with other Italian companies, Impresa Pizzarotti completed the project to an incredibly high standard. “During the project, we were able to use interesting and innovative systems for the construction of more than 10 kilometres of railway viaducts and beyond,” explains Francesco Aguglia, Project Director at Impresa Pizzarotti. “This solved the problem to the numerous interferences for
densely populated territories, while also allowing for optimal landscaping and environmental integration and permeability of the highly relevant infrastructure.” With some of the more challenging overhangs that the Company came up against - particularly in terms of length - the solution had to be integrated in a similar manner, designed with hyperstatic solutions which were poured on site. ne of the main infrastructure works carried out by Turchi Cesare S.r.l. is Lot B of the new Milan external ring road (TEEM) highway, between the A1 MilanBologna highway and the A4 Milan-Venice highway; an area that has been entrusted to Consorzio Arcoteem , which was conducted by Impressa Pizzarotti & C. S. p.a. in 2013. This work, considered essential for the decongestion of heavy traffic in the area of Milan, has been a challenge for the two companies, Pizzarotti and Turchi Cesare, considering the importance of the project (gaining international visibility thanks to the Expo event which graced Milan in 2015) and the tight timing for its construction. For the construction, therefore, specific equipment was required to guarantee not only the highest quality of the final product, but also extreme reliability and enhanced productivity. In October, 2013, the delivery and installation of the plant was commissioned to Ammann Italy S.p.a (world leader) and it has subsequently produced a host of hot mixes for the entire Lot B project (approximately 600,000 tonnes in 15 months across 16 kilometres). The plant, chosen and designed by Group Ammann with the collaboration of Pizzarotti and Turchi Cesare, is a mobile type, SpeedyBatch 320 and it is configured with two lines for recycling of milled material. This technology is covered by three international patents and enables the re-use of milled material in high quantities in the full respect of emissions; similarly succeeding in producing asphalt of high quality even
with the use of large percentages of milled material. The plant, installed and tested in just eight weeks in the industrial area of Melzo (MI), has been managed operationally and exclusively by Turchi Cesare, which has produced on a daily basis about 4,000 tonnes of hot mixes, working 24 hours in continuous shifts (with a maximum production of 300 tonnes an hour). The paving of the hot mix asphalts produced has occupied on a daily basis up to four teams of Turchi Cesare, composed of equipment including: five road pavers, eight tandem rollers, six track loaders, two excavators, one milling machine, one soil stabiliser and cold recycler, two truck mounted sweepers , 31 heavy trucks and 15 vans for mixed-use, and the use of an innovative mobile crushing and screening plant. All activities were monitored and coordinated by operating and technical staff, composed of more than 100 employees with proven experience - in continuous collaboration with Pizzarotti Group - with the aim of studying, designing, and implementing a mixed design of innovative and durable materials.

EME emini Property Developers is the new boutique property development company of choice in Dubai, under the wing of the Gemini Group - a Company that has been involved with businesses from the energy sector to the infrastructure sector across the UAE and India - and established a short few years ago with the aim of offering better value homes to property buyers. The Company motto is ‘Building Trust’ and through that it hopes to gain customer trust and confidence through offering incredible value for money, subsequently building a name for itself and inevitably having its own solid reputation to work with, not just that of its parent company. Currently Gemini Property Developers is focusing on the completion of its first project ‘Gemini Splendor’, a Dh300 million residential housing venture with 134 units on offer. “As part of the Gemini Group, Gemini Property Developers has of course taken on some of the structures and values of the parent group,” explains Prabhakar Raghavendra, joint Managing Director of Gemini Property Developments. “As a diversified business with interests in energy, trading and real estate, the Company is well and truly part of this family owned business.” Gemini Property Developers is currently engaged in developing real estate projects across India and the Middle East as its core business. “I would say that the main philosophy of the Company is in its ability to provide dependability, trust and credibility in a market that can at times be extremely non-transparent,” explains Sailesh Jatania, Chief Executive Officer at Gemini Property Developers. “Of course, it is too early to talk about the success of a property developer that is yet to deliver on its first project.

New projects go through thorough selections
“However, within a short space of time, we are getting very close to delivering on Gemini Splendor ahead of its committed delivery time; taking into consideration that this is in a market in which delayed delivery times are the norm, we feel particularly successful in these early days and it is reflected in the Company shareholder’s strong commitment to the property buyers.” In its early years the Company is showing itself to be an organisation of character and integrity, with its shareholders believing in sustainable business practices through a strong set of guiding principles that characterise its operations, including a strong ethical business practice backed up by solid company morale. carefully,” explains Sudhakar Rao, Managing Director at Gemini Property Developers. “We have placed huge emphasis on fundamentals such as location, quality, affordability and a customer-centric approach, and we are limited by time not ambition so the sky is the limit moving forward.”
Investing in people
The biggest investment the Company has made in ensuring that its projects are carried out to excellent standards, as well as perfectly on schedule is its people, proving to be their biggest asset. “We firmly believe that the best things happen when you engage good people in the Company,” explains Raghavendra. “Our team is our biggest strength and they are consistently adding value to our business; having said that there are of course other aspects that play into it. “Gemini Property Developers also deploys the latest technologies, such as smart homes with automation features within its projects, while also ensuring that all of the project facilities are maintained to the highest possible standard.” The Company prides itself on sourcing all of the products used from reliable partners only, and of course with that, quality is of the utmost importance and Gemini Property Developers will not allow that to be compromised. “We work for our customers and they are king in our eyes, therefore we ensure that no shortcuts are taken when it comes to carrying out our business practices,” adds Jatania. “For our first project, we have carried out extensive visits to various countries in order to establish the best possible supply chain, for example we are sourcing the floor surfaces, kitchens, wardrobes amongst other things from Europe, while doors are procured from China, so as you see we have a far reaching range to source from.”

Character and Integrity
Having established itself as a boutique property developer, Gemini Property Developers is working to build a reputation of character and integrity, seeking excellence in everything it does. “We always strive to achieve the best service and therefore customer satisfaction,” describes Rao. “Money is a by-product of what we do, we want to challenge ourselves which is why we have set the bar so high when it comes to achieving quality products and services across all of our business. We are a morally strong business with sound ethical practices.” In marketing themselves in this way, the Company’s success will be determined by the level of happiness that it can provide for its customers, not the number of apartments or buildings it can deliver. “It is crucial to us to establish what we are going to deliver in terms of shape, size and format,” affirms Raghavendra. “We are not bothered

by the magnitude of the property or product, but instead what it will be able to provide for the customer and how they will be able to enjoy the products and services that we deliver.” Taking into account that economies grow in cycles, the Company is doing incredibly well in these early days, especially when considering that its first project has been launched under a particularly tough market condition that is marked by lower oil prices and weaker demand. “Jatania concludes: “We don’t launch our sales campaigns in a big way like most developers do, with our philosophy being that our works will do the talking for us, subsequently delivering automatic sale when we deliver on our projects. “In a way we have challenged ourselves to deliver more and be better than initially promised and over time we firmly believe that this will make us stronger as an organisation that is growing under tough conditions.”

YIT Corporation has built a solid reputation for constructing, developing, renovating and maintaining homes and business premises, ranging from private companies to public organisations Writer: Phoebe Calver | Production Manager: Richard Thomas
EME IT Corporation has always had a very clear mission, vision and values that have helped to build the foundations of its incredibly successful operations and ways of working, having committed itself to a long-term business strategy within the industry. The Company has always ensured that its values are paramount and therefore it will not simply pursue good financial results at any cost. Instead, in order to achieve such high business success, YIT consistently shows respect to its stakeholders in order to create value for all of them. “This of course includes customers and employees,” explains Timo Lehmus, Senior Vice President of Real Estate at YIT. “We strongly believe that the ways of working outlined within our YIT business principles are supporting and boosting the long-term success of our business.” These business principles are a concrete expression from the Company, demonstrating what compliance with its values means when it comes to its work with different stakeholders; of course there is also the Company vision, to always be a step ahead with care for people. “Our relationship with the society we operate in is particularly important and subsequently we find our business is characterised by locality,” adds Lehmus. “Currently we are present in a variety of different countries and within these; we operate in small municipalities, big cities and of course everything in between. “To match our local conscience, we employ local people and, through that, we cooperate with local suppliers and contractors, in order to be successful with this, good relationships with societies around us are crucial to the business.” Of course in order for this to run smoothly the Company has strict regulations in place to adhere to when

In more recent times, one of the main aims of the Company has been to minimise the impact on the environment which is caused by its own operations, however, YIT’s products and services also have the possibility to support the reduction of its customers’ environmental impact. “Our aim is to utilise this possibility to its full potential and therefore support it in creating an increasingly environmentally sustainable living

More specifically in construction projects, YIT has to pay special attention to the efficiency of the energy and material used, as well as the specific choice of materials; continuously developing solutions to any of those issues which will develop new solutions for increasing environmentally friendliness. Lehmus explains: “We strive to provide long-lasting as well as environmentally sustainable living environments for our customers, investing in any developments in innovations in this field.”

n just 20 years, the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Centre has grown from a hospital comprising just two full-time oncologists to be one of Jordan’s, and indeed the region’s, leading non-profit healthcare institutions with more than 250 consultants and oncologists to call upon. Established by Royal decree back in 1997, the institution has evolved exponentially not just from a capacity perspective, but in the quality of care offered and across the research & development carried out. The result: King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC) now treats more than 60 percent of all cancer cases in Jordan, with survival rates comparable to anywhere else in the developed world. “KHCC is the only specialised tertiary hospital that provides all treatment modalities and services for cancer care in addition to bone marrow transplantation for adult and paediatric patients in Jordan,” elaborates the Centre’s Chief Executive Officer and Director General, Dr Asem Mansour. “It has developed its organisational structure from mere medical and nonmedical departments, to include crossdepartmental units and programmes that focus on specific cancers. “This is referred to as multidisciplinary management of cancer patients and is practiced continuously at KHCC through multidisciplinary organised teams (MDT) or clinics (MDC).” Developing in collaboration with leading institutions from around the world, KHCC’s clinical crossdepartmental services include: breast cancer, gastrointestinal malignancies clinic, adult lymphoma, head and neck, thoracic, gynaecological malignancies, sarcoma, adult neuro-oncology, genitourinary malignancies, thyroid, adult leukaemia, adult ocular oncology, paediatrics solid tumours, paediatric neuro-oncology, and paediatric leukaemia services.

Currently the number of new patients every year is on average 3,800, with around 150,000 outpatients
“KHCC additionally provides patient support services through non-medical units and programmes including psychosocial services, pain management, physical therapy and rehabilitation, nutritional services, child social life/ education/play therapy, patient and family education, and support group services,” Mansour adds. A total of 352 beds are in place across both new and pre-existing inpatient buildings, while the new adjacent King Salman Bin Abdulaziz inpatient facility contributes a further 179 single-occupancy rooms to the tally; the combination accounting for intensive care, bone marrow transplants, paediatric patients, and oncology admissions. Pursuit of excellence
At present, the patient number sits at around 3,800 new patients each year, as well as around an average of 150,000 outpatients each year. This number is set to rise by more than 100,000 though in light of the ongoing expansions and ever-broadening positive recognition. To date the Bone Marrow
Transplantation (BMT) Programme at KHCC has performed 1,570 transplants, including the most difficult and complicated types of bone marrow transplants. With the expansion, the number of annual transplants performed is expected to reach 300 cases; which will make KHCC the largest BMT centre in the region in terms of capacity, and one of the most advanced in terms of quality. “In its ongoing pursuit of excellence, KHCC received international accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), the international arm of the Joint Commission that accredits and certifies healthcare organisations and programmes in the US,” Mansour continues. “KHCC is currently working on two important accreditation applications for 2018, one for nursing

Involving itself so wholly and effectively in the latest healthcare trends, technologies and innovations inevitably requires stringent collaborations and market research, as well as affiliations and memberships such as ones enjoyed as part of the EORTC (European Organisation of Research and Treatment of Cancer) and the WIN consortium (Worldwide Innovation Networking in Personalised Cancer Medicine). “These memberships give us access to state-of-the-art clinical trials that are concurrently being conducted in other leading cancer centres worldwide,” Mansour notes. “Such clinical trials usually address difficult diseases with
grim prognoses and incorporate novel biomarker-driven treatments that are not available for patients outside the research setting. “Similarly, our pharmacy department is always on the lookout for changes in medication safety profiles and drug withdrawals and communicates this promptly to medical staff.” KHCC is concurrently working on obtaining AAHRPP (Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programmes) membership to further strengthen its role in the global healthcare community; an initiative that not only enhances the reputation of the institution, but also the individual opportunities for knowledge sharing for the Centre’s employees. “From a personnel perspective, transforming the training centre into an education and training academy was an important step in providing the necessary training to improve the skills of KHCC employees and healthcare workers in the field of cancer within Jordan and the region,” Mansour affirms. “As a multi-accredited institution, KHCC focuses on increasing self-awareness, motivation, self-

empathy, and effective communication and relationships among all departments and staff. “And the introduction of academic programmes offering diplomas and Masters degrees will elevate that level of training across cancer informatics, nursing, oncology, palliative care and pain management, infection control, and others.” Also bringing into play a strong ethos of localisation, the need to bridge the skills gap and to make Jordanian healthcare more sustainable in the future also spills over into more concerted corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities; two of which the KHCC is spearheading at national level. Mansour details: “First is the Jordan Breast Cancer Programme (JBCP) which leads national efforts in fighting breast cancer through early detection and screening. The programme oversees quality of service provided nationwide and provides technical training in the field, as well as strategic consultation for similar programmes. JBCP has drafted the national guidelines for breast cancer early detection. It launches and supports breast cancer awareness campaigns

yearly in October to emphasise the importance of screening and early detection in saving hundreds of lives. It additionally manages a mobile screening and mammography programme that reaches out to underserved communities in remote areas outside of the city of Amman. “And secondly is the Cancer Control Office (CCO) at KHCC which is the implementation of evidence-based interventions to reduce the burden of cancer through reducing incidence and the related morbidity and mortality, and through enhancing the quality patients’ lives.”
Holistic treatments
The Khaled Shoman Training Centre at KHCC is another example of the institution broadening its reach in acting as a modern space for hosting academic education and training activities for both KHCC staff and the local community. And such commitment to widespread improvement is just one asset of many that Mansour attributes to the overall success of the Centre. “It’s also the reasonable medical care costs compared to other hospitals within the EU, the UK and the US,”
Assessment of psychological and social needs of both adult and paediatric patients is pivotal
EME he adds. “Other advantages include our multidisciplinary approach for our team of physicians and nurses to make medical decisions; our holistic treatments that cover the medical, the psychological, and the social needs of both adult and paediatric patients; the possibility to obtain direct consultation from recognised cancer treatment centres around the world; and the ease of communication we encourage in both Arabic and English, as well as the availability of translation services into other languages.” Vigilant cultural considerations and general comprehensive cancer care across all medical specialties complete the proposition that KHCC has strived to create over the past 20 years; culminating in a portfolio that tackles the most pressing challenges that the industry can present. “Cancer cases are expected to increase in the future, reaching levels that will challenge public and private healthcare systems and may hinder patient access to treatments that can save their lives,” Mansour concludes. “The cost of the many recently introduced cancer drugs and sophisticated radiation therapy and surgical techniques will create significant challenges for the current insurance system. And this should alert policy makers to plan strategies and discuss alternatives. “A shortage in cancer care providers will be a challenge at all levels as Jordan experiences significant difficulties in attracting and retaining highly-specialised Jordanian graduates, but the healthcare system in Jordan must progress towards integrated clinical care and clinical research, including research on quality, access and treatment outcomes; and with an emphasis on survivorship programmes.” All of the above being critical facets that KHCC will no doubt be instrumental in driving as its impressive evolution continues.

Initially established as an aircraft operator and charterer, the business has diversified in line with acquisitions and organic growth into adjacent aviation services, as well as aircraft management and operating, and later aviation logistics support and offshore facilitation. “It’s been an exciting journey and the Company hasn’t looked back since,” enthuses Group Commercial Director, Chris Mace. “Growth has been a fundamental element to our success, including in 2011 when we built the multimillion pound Business Aviation Centre and hangar facility in Norwich, which we now use as a UK HQ base (although the majority of the aircraft fleet are based from SaxonAir locations around London, including Luton, Stansted and Denham Airports).” SaxonAir operates under the umbrella of the Klyne Aviation Group and is comprised of four divisions: SaxonAir Charter, SaxonAir Flight Support, SaxonAir Helicopters, and SaxonAir Aircraft Sales. That being said, this also has to be balanced out by a professionalism and consistency that comes with working alongside key business organisations and sectors such as offshore oil & gas clients; processing the handling of passengers and freight to platforms in the southern North Sea. “These contracts are with both helicopter operators and the end oil & gas operators such as Shell and Oranje-Nassau Energie,” Mace notes. “Other key contracts include in 2010 when SaxonAir won a 10-year contract

Aligning with these local trends and demands, G4S has designed its portfolio offering to meet the exacting requirements of customers across the region, while also being fully-compliant with all the requirements of the Private Security Business Department and Department of Protective Systems. he power of cloud technologies and computing in particular is something which Oracle has harnessed and instilled into the world’s enterprises in recent years. Embracing enhanced speeds of data transmission, marketing requirements and internal technological efficiencies, never before has a Company such as Oracle been in as much demand, and - as a consequence - the global business is dedicating itself to meeting those needs on an increasingly large scale. The broadness of Oracle’s cloud services bridges areas of customer management, marketing, ERP and much more under one seamless opportunity for Oracle’s partners and customers to cherry pick from, in accordance with their own bespoke requirements and the most pressing trends in their fields. And perhaps in no other region in the world is such a turnkey offering more prevalent than in the rapidly evolving tech haven of the Middle East. As recently as last year, its influence was showcased on a grand scale in San Francisco as the UAE further strengthened its reputation as a global hub for innovation; as leading local

Enhance local capabilities
This is simply the tip of the iceberg for a Company that has become so renowned for enterprise enrichment over the years; capitalising on the most pressing and contemporary of tech challenges on an internal note before then delivering the most optimum solution to such challenges on behalf of companies of all sizes, and across all sectors. To this end, 2017 has already witnessed the Company enhance capabilities in the UAE - the heart of the region’s technological growth to support cloud progression. Reinforcing its commitment to the Middle East, Oracle announced the opening of a state-of-the-art Oracle Digital Hub and its first data centre in the region, which was scheduled to go online later in the year. This followed the regional expansion news whereby Oracle outlined plans to continue its extensive infrastructure investments and expands its cloud footprint in the US, UK and Turkey. MINDTREE Reduce maintenance of Oracle ERP Apps through hyper-agile managed services Today, CIOs are constantly seeking opportunities to reduce the “Run costs of IT”. This is mainly to channel more dollars into IT initiatives that can “Grow the business” rather than just maintain it. This is because delivering Business outcomes is as much a priority of IT today as any other function. However, reduction in the “run costs” of IT does not mean compromising on the quality of service delivered. The challenge is more so in organisations adopting a strategy of inorganic growth where there is every scope for duplication of infrastructure and systems.
Opening Oracle Digital Hub demonstrates the commitment to enhancing local capabilities
The Oracle Digital Hub, which is targeted to employ 400 cloud sales professionals, is located in Dubai’s Knowledge Village and equipped with future proof technology to deliver an exceptional customer experience. It will also deliver an unparalleled employee experience and has been designed specifically to align with the modern buying journey using future proof technology to better support our customers in their digital transformation. and understand the effects of demand transference without having to recruit a full team of scientists with transaction-level data experience. Powerful scientific insights are delivered in a digestible format for the business user through personal-based dashboards. Prior to selecting Oracle, Nahdi planners spent time navigating a manual process using Excel spreadsheets and in-house databases. Today Nahdi is able to optimise the planning team’s productivity with standardised and automated planning processes. “The implementation of Oracle Retail increased the accuracy of planning and forecasting the merchandising figures. We are able to plan and execute a better assortment of products across our stores to improve our guests’ satisfaction,” said Dr. Khalid Tadlaoui, Vice President of Information Technology, Nahdi Medical Company. “The proliferation of data can

Merchandising Systems for the cloud implementation; before also delivering training programmes to empower the business and technical teams. “It is a privilege to work with a retailer like Nahdi who is using science to leverage the performance and availability of each individual product to satisfy their guests and who also places an importance that their employees have access to critical planning information without wasted time sifting through Excel and manual processes,” said Amber Naqvi, President, Logic Information Systems. Moving forward, it’s inevitable that Oracle’s positive influence on both aspiring and established Middle Eastern industry heavyweights will grow, as advanced technologies become more complex and concurrently - the pressure on businesses to become more streamlined - both independently and alongside their own business partners gains stringency.
