Already established as the packaging leader in Africa with operations in 11 African countries outside of SA, Nampak continues to take advantage of the continent’s upward growth trajectory Writer: Emily Jarvis Project Manager: Ben Wigger

ince its inception more than 50 years ago, Nampak Bevcan has demonstrated its capabilities in the manufacture and supply of beverage cans across the African continent to become known as one of Africa’s leading lights. Throughout this prosperous existence, the company’s footprint has gradually grown to include surrounding markets such as Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and most recently Angola and Nigeria. Throughout its operations, the launch of the “buy better, make better, sell better” business improvement initiatives, as well as concerted efforts to improve the company safety record continue to drive Nampak forward. In 2014, the Group achieved a Level 3 BBBEE rating, an improvement on the Level 4 rating in 2013. In South Africa, the business environment is set to remain challenging this year, however, Nampak will continue to focus on ways to unlock value from its base business. Efficiency gains from the conversation of many of its beverage can lines to aluminium from tinplate, as well as from the new glass furnace, are expected to contribute earnings in the year ahead. Moreover, Nampak is strategically well-placed in the rest of Africa, with strong market positions and a growing presence. The Group is pursuing its strategic objective to accelerate growth in the rest of Africa to ensure that this side of the business contributes to sustainable earnings growth in the long term.

Bevcan Nigeria acquisition

The packaging company reported a 10 percent increase in Group revenue for the year ending September 2014, in line with growth expectations. Furthermore, Nampak said trading profit from the rest of Africa increased by 25 percent to R616 million mainly due to the contribution of the newly acquired Bevcan Nigeria and the continued strong performance from the Angola beverage can operation. Nampak’s CEO commented that “the acquisition will significantly increase Nampak’s presence in Nigeria which is Africa’s second largest economy”. Alucan Packaging is situated in the Agbara industrial area which Nampak said was “an ideal location” close to Lagos and to major beverage producing customers as well as having “a reliable source of gas which will be used for heating and power generation”. “Nigeria, with a population of more than 170 million people, has experienced good growth in demand for beverage cans and this is expected to continue. The acquisition and the potential to acquire the plastics company will further contribute to our stated growth strategy in the rest of Africa,” the CEO adds. Not content with this regional dominance, Nampak Bevcan continued to increase its geographical reach. According to Erik Smuts, Group Executive of Beverage Cans at Nampak, the business aspires to be “the preferred supplier of beverage packaging in Sub-Saharan Africa”. Although this might sound like an ambitious statement, recent developments mean this target should become a reality.

“We have built a plant in Angola, which has been operating for more than three years and as of last year has a second production line installed. The newly acquired Bevcan Nigeria also plays an equal part in our success. As there will be a lot of focus getting this business up and running, there are exciting times ahead,” Smuts highlights.

Competitive drive

Although continued growth across Africa will undoubtedly give Nampak Bevcan a distinct competitive advantage over manufacturing alternatives, the company has several other strengths to call upon. “We have proved in South Africa, where we do not always have ideal conditions to operate, that we manage to work with what is available,” explains Smuts. “Despite our successes, we have huge respect for the other global can makers, and we know that we will have to be at our best in order to defend our position.” This resolute and determined attitude has put Nampak Bevcan in good stead for its Angolan operation as Smuts explains: “We operate in a place where there is very little infrastructure. We generate our own electricity and tanker in all of the water we require. But we are used to operating in areas where it is tough and you can’t always rely

on external service providers other facilities or suppliers. This is critical to our competitive nature and we intend to drive this further to make sure we become even more successful in these areas.” Despite the operational difficulties in Africa, Smuts believes that Nampak Bevcan has managed to position itself in line with some of the industry’s biggest beverage can manufacturers. “In South Africa we are more competitive in our pricing than Europe and many other developed countries in the world. “What makes us different is our strong relationships with customers, good service and a competitive offering. Our adventurous nature and an aggressive cost reduction attitude are also strong characteristics,” he reveals.

Rolls-Royce’s influence in the Asia Pacific region continues to grow year-on-year as its Singapore Seletar Campus lays the foundations for a productive future Writer: Matthew Staff Project Manager: Tom Cullum olls-Royce is one of the most infamous global names in manufacturing, but never slows in its strive to innovate and improve; a philosophy currently being epitomised by its Asia Pacific division. Staying true to its vision of providing “better power for a changing world”, Asia certainly adheres to this ethos with emerging markets sitting parallel to some of the most lucrative and forward-thinking countries in the world. As a consequence, Rolls-Royce Asia Pacific currently comprises a third of the Group’s global turnover through its services in aerospace engineering, assembling Trent engines, manufacturing fan blades for engines, and ship building. The power systems organisation’s strive for efficiency and operational excellence has been a familiar feature of the Rolls-Royce offering for more than 100 years, and its latest facility additions are set to ensure further tech advancements across the Asian continent.

G

Campus, the Unit has been designed to allow simultaneous assembly and testing of the engines under one roof and it will act as a sister site to its production and test facility in the UK, creating additional capacity and a closer proximity to customers in the region. Opening its doors in 2014, the Unit is already working in tandem with its manufacturing of Trent 900 engines for the Airbus A380, and its Trent 1000 engines for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with the facility not even up to full capacity for another two years. Once it does reach its optimum capabilities, the factory will house the production of 250 large engines a year, incorporating module builds, complete engine assembly and subsequent testing. The production test bed can accommodate an engine with a fan size of up to 140 inches and 15,000 pounds of thrust, not only confirming the Group as a market leader in the sector as would be expected, but also allowing for further and greater flexibility in the future too. The site’s link to the Rolls-Royce base in the UK also encourages a series of benefits including the promotion of uniform operations on an international level, and subsequently, its success in attaining Civil Aviation Authority approvals. “The delivery of the first Trent aero engine produced in Singapore is a significant milestone for us. It represents a huge collaborative effort

Supported by International Component Overhaul and Singapore Airlines - as well as European logistics specialists, Kuehne + Nagel - RollsRoyce and SAESL are highlighting the importance of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) in an attempt to encourage students into the aerospace and manufacturing sector in years to come. Ultimately, the Trent 1000 school tour hopes to reach as many as six million people by 2020 through a range of programmes, aided by RollsRoyce’s business partners, to ensure that the currently flourishing industry in Singapore continues to thrive in the future. “SAESL understands that it is our people who made what SAESL is today,” the Company states in relation to its continued support of individual development. “We celebrate its success with various company events, which foster stronger working relationships amongst ourselves. Through team work, we continue to go from strength to strength.” The SAESL Sports and Recreation Committee further emphasises

this ethos, fostering a positive atmosphere, indicative of what is required to be a vibrant and entrepreneurial business. “We work hard and play hard,” the Company affirms.

Quality and safety

The creation of proactive and mutually beneficial relationships is also seen throughout SAESL’s supply chain, having worked alongside local partners for the best part of two decades in some cases. Stability in areas such as this provide the ideal platform to be flexible and proactive in others, especially regarding the ongoing investments that are required to keep ahead of the industry curve, and in line with Rolls-Royce’s globally competitive demands. At the beginning of 2015, a new test pod was purchased to this end - a joint venture with Rolls-Royce - while SAESL is also planning to move into laser repair in order to improve efficiencies by as much as 80 percent. arco Fredrikstad is at the forefront of technological advancements in high resolution, compact visualisation projectors. Designed to perform in a wide variety of fields including control rooms, training and simulation, visitor attractions and scientific visualisation to name but a few, the company is one of the small number remaining in Europe that still designs and manufactures in-house. Part of the one billion euro Barco Group headquartered in Kortrijk, Belgium, the Norwegian arm of the business is located in Fredrikstad and is regularly recognised as a Centre of Excellence in the visualisation industry worldwide. Previously known as

projectiondesign, the company name was changed to Barco following an acquisition in 2013, which CEO John Paulissen says was designed to merge competencies and blend synergies of the two reputable visualisation companies: “The Group wanted to extend its focus into areas that it could build further strength in; namely simulation, visitor attractions, and the venues and hospitality industry. These were areas that projectiondesign held its strengths.” “The former projectiondesign brand and accompanying image is to be retained going forward as it has always focussed on the people behind the company. PHILIPS DIGITAL PROJECTION LIGHTING Philips celebrates 20 years of UHP innovations For digital projector users, brightness, sharp and visible images, colors and the lifetime of lamps are of key importance. With the pace of development in the technology industry everincreasing, Barco Fredrikstad invariably invests in the latest innovations via a comprehensive R&D department, boasting state-of-the-art tech at the Norwegian site. “Technology never stands still and we believe that developing a strong set of products in line with this mantra will allow a smooth transition into new sectors to keep our hand in a broader range of markets,” says Paulissen.

Projectors from Barco provide ultrahigh resolution, ruggedness and a seamless integration into a variety of applications. Each projector is designed to be mounted on a motion platform, and their small size is a key enabler for many installations, saving on space and is made possible through the most advanced systems imaginable. Barco Fredrikstad conducts most of its business primarily across the simulator and visitor attractions industry or anywhere that requires a multiple-projector setup. “The simulator market is crucial to areas such as civil and military training as it is a much cheaper alternative to facilitate training for multiple people at a faster rate in a simulator than in a real plane for example, thus also reducing the costs incurred. As a global organisation, our F-series of projectors have an excellent reputation among key industry players,” comments Paulissen. In terms of the visitor attractions market, projectors are one of the key AV technologies used as a facilitator

Philips UHP lamps are the ideal light source for projectors. Not only do they offer the highest light output for the complex environments of Micro Display projectors, they also have a long operating life of up to 10,000 hours, with a low loss of lumens during their lifetime. However, UHP lamps must be handled with care as they reach extremely high temperatures (hotter than the sun) and operate under high pressure (ca. 200-250 bar). The Philips UHP lamp and ballast system has been developed in close partnership with our OEMs and is optimized to ensure a flicker-free picture with excellent color reproduction. Building on 20 years of innovation, Philips continues to develop UHP technology for specific lamp types and ballasts, to guarantee the ultimate projection experience. John Paulissen, CEO Previously a qualified chemical engineer, John Paulissen worked for GE in the plastics division before joining Barco in 2005. In 2006 he was tasked with running Barco manufacturing facilities in Beijing, China which lasted for eight years. Just six months ago he returned to lead the new division, Barco Fredrikstad in Norway. Paulissen incorporated western thinking into Barco’s new facility in China in order to innovate production methods. “We managed to build up the business in China and I am very proud to have been a part of this, it was very intense but we were rewarded in the long term, securing large growth for the Group,” he says.

Theme parks work with external bureaus in order to make these public attractions more than just a place to go, but a place of immersion and experience. By bringing movement and life to attractions, projectors help convey a message, concept or idea and are the only way to make truly enveloping curved screen displays for truly immersive environments. “The challenge is in finding and using

the correct technology that really enhances the storytelling and the experience for the visitor. We find that with our flexible, compact and high resolution projectors the technology becomes non-intrusive and really enhances the story,” details Paulissen.

Industry trends

As technology paces forward and delves into the probability of not necessarily bigger but brighter and higher resolution screens, Paulissen is confident that projection will remain the primary market for Barco Fredrikstad. “Using a projector in a simulator means you are able to create a seamless, curved immersive environment with the perception of depth. In pilot training for example, you wouldn’t want to see the horizon fragmented across multiple LCD screens. Of course, projectors will remain a key device in other industry practices too,” adds Paulissen. At present, a projector lamp has a limited lifetime, which means that changing the bulb after 2,000 hours is considered part of total cost of ownership. KEY SUPPLIERS By working closely with suppliers and research institutions such as universities, Barco Fredrikstad continue to grow around the world, from a little town in the South of Norway. • Long term relationship with Phillips that goes beyond the delivery of lamps, working together on new illumination technologies • Elka Group provides more than 30 different types of wires that are used within each projector. Known as a name you can trust for high quality, timely delivery and fast response to help • Infitec GmbH is a supplier that supports Barco in the field of 3D applications, a field that is getting more and more attention stability and projectors that are able to run 24-seven, Barco Fredrikstad is shifting towards solid state illumination technologies such as LED, laser and hybrid solutions. “We strive to create a projector without lamps and without excessive noise from the current fan-based cooling systems. Our thermal engineers test only the best cooling solutions for projection and by working to replace the lamp totally, we hope to reduce cost and inconvenience for customers but also reduce heat output in general. “The F50 projector is our latest innovation which encompasses new cooling techniques via separate enclosures designed to make it quieter,” says Paulissen.

movement. “However, currently, the uptake of 4K content providers across any industry is low, which means the benefit of utilising such a high resolution projector is still low”,” adds Paulissen. Moving into new waters, Barco Fredrikstad has created its C-series of projectors to instil a more exciting environment in conference rooms. “We are working on a proposal to make meeting rooms more participative and easier to connect people in a more reliable and efficient way. By putting the Barco spin on ways to communicate in a virtual conference call environment, we provide the tools to simplify visual collaboration – wirelessly,” comments Paulissen. Going forward, a vital aspect of all Barco products will be their ability to operate 24-seven and the company has one of the lowest failure rates in the industry. “Simulators run multiple projectors at a time continuously. If just one of these were to fail you would not be able to use the facility, and the cost of shutting down such an attraction or a simulator can be extremely high. “Uptime needs to be as high as possible and consequently, we have developed a system that can detect
