It’s difficult to describe all the emotions and feelings you go through at Outward Bound, and how you really do feel like a new person when you return. I’ve learnt so much and feel mentally and physically stronger.

The most challenging and rewarding experience for me was the expedition, climbing the 3rd highest mountain in Britain and camping out overnight – it was incredible. I felt a sense of immense personal achievement, but also an amazing sense of group togetherness. Mel
The Classic By choosing the Classic you’re embarking on one of the greatest multi-adventure and personal development courses currently available in the UK. You’ll try an incredible range of thrilling activities, from mountain rock climbing to Cutter sailing, gorge walking, sea kayaking or abseiling. There are fabulous overnight camping expeditions too, across some of the most incredible and remote parts of Britain.
The Classic course works because it takes you through a carefully planned process – it focuses on both the technical skills you need to push yourself in the outdoors, and the personal skills you need to succeed. At the start you’ll be building up your skills, and by week three you’ll be planning a multi-day journey for you and your group, camping deep in the mountains each night.

The Classic
Expedition Are you ready for an incredible personal journey, an intensive adventure deep into the remote wilderness of Britain? You’ll leave the world you know far behind, as you hike, climb and paddle into the wild, taking responsibility for yourself as you and your group camp overnight for 21 days.
After kitting out at one of our centres the expedition begins. Initially your instructor will help you develop the skills needed for this self-powered journey. As your experience increases you take over as leaders and planners, making decisions about the summits you’ll climb, where to set up camp and the organisation of your group. It’s the ultimate challenge and the ultimate adventure – taking you, your small group and your expert instructor on an exhilarating journey. Without a doubt, one of the most challenging and personally rewarding experiences of your life.

Safety
The safety of our course participants is of paramount importance to us at The Outward Bound Trust. We have been welcoming young people to our centres and accompanying them on adventurous journeys in the wild for over 65 years. As a result, we have accumulated considerable experience in managing all aspects of safety and enjoy an enviable record in this area. We comply fully with all relevant legislation and all of our centres are licensed under the Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme 1996.
Our heritage
Outward Bound was founded in 1941 by the naval captain Lawrence Holt and the educationalist Kurt Hahn. Initially we trained young merchant seamen, helping them prepare for a tough life at sea and showing them how to survive if they were shipwrecked. After the war the courses were developed further and became open to everyone. Since the beginning the main ideas stayed the same – getting young people outdoors, active, and learning new skills that will help set them up for the rest of their lives.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award & The John Muir Award
Some sections of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme can be completed as part of your Outward Bound course. We can also offer the John Muir Award on some courses. Visit our website for full details on these two award schemes and how they fit with each of our courses.

Your course price also includes comprehensive insurance cover for the duration of the trip. The cover is ‘door to door’ and includes personal accident, medical expenses, personal belongings, money and personal liability. Cancellation cover is also included once the booking has been made and first deposits paid. Please refer to the Terms & Conditions on our website for more information.
