Let´s go family camping The perfect holiday? Here at Outwell we like to think we come pretty close. You choose where you want to go, and when. We do the rest. It’s the best possible way of bringing the whole family together for happy camping memories.

Outwell – your home from home Tent camping is more popular than ever, with ever more campsites opening to offer an increasing variety of location and on-site amenities. Almost imperceptibly, words like “staycation” and “glamping” have entered our everyday vocabulary, describing the way we’re staying in for our breaks and there’s a lot of glamour to our camping.

All our products are fully tested to withstand any conditions the weather – or your family! – can throw at it. Stability in windy weather is just one factor, and we’ve developed the new OWS System (Outwell Wind Stabilizer System) to further enhance our performance here, also benchmarking our tents against the Beaufort Wind Scale. But let’s not forget camping is all about making the most of the sunny weather. That’s why we’ve introduced the all-new Sun Collection, with its bright Topaz colourings, meaning you’ll always have a sunny disposition! There’s simply loads more we want to tell you about, but don’t forget there is plenty more to see at outwell.com, our revamped website for 2011 (see back page). m outwell.co History in the making Outwell’s pedigree is very much one of firsts. Ours were the first tents to feature such innovations as our now-famous Luminous Guylines, sewn-in groundsheets, carpets, skylight windows and much more. We have also been able to put our name to key innovations such as the Outwell Sealed Ground System, for optimal all-weather protection, and Extended Frame System, ensuring maximum headroom throughout the tent without loss of stability. Plus, thanks to our overall design and build quality, we were at the vanguard of initiatives such as double-dome and double-tunnel tents.

Wind Stabilizer System

We never stop striving to improve. Who else but Outwell could have come up with the super-cool Kids Room inner tents? We have a full research and development team dedicated to checking out new ideas and making sure they work where it matters most – out in the field! Indeed, we’re renowned for our comprehensive development programmes, involving laboratory work and rain and wind testing facilities at our factories as well as our headquarters in Denmark. Uniquely, we also benefit from, and act upon, feedback from users out in the field – including our Internet Panel and carefully selected Outwell Test Families. That’s Outwell. Often imitated, never bettered! You can find out even more at outwell.com.

Easy Pegging System

An all-new innovation for this season, our highly effective Wind Stabilizer System uses a strong Velcro fastening system as a direct attachment point between the flysheet and tent pole. We’ve tested features like our Wind Stabilizer System under the most severe weather conditions, and measured their amazing performances are ratings of up to nine and even ten on the Beaufort Scale (see also pages 12 and 13). That’s real peace of mind for you and all the family.

One of our latest innovations and one that truly lives up to its name! Special use of three different colour-coded types of pegs ensures pitching is both straightforward and contributes to the inherent stability of any Outwell tent. Here, we use grey anchor steel pegs at each corner, black plastic pegs for general pegging out, and luminous pegs to complement the guylines. Simple, but so highly effective.

Luminous Guylines/ Piping/ Dry Zip System Not content with leading the way with Luminous Guylines over a decade ago, we’ve supplemented this with complementary Luminous Piping on the main tent panels. Plus, Dry Zip System means special luminous coverings that prevent water getting in anywhere along important zipping points.

Game wall Introduced with our Fantasy Collection of tents last year, this is all about fun for everyone, and a key innovation to prove how Outwell puts families first. In the Fantasy Collection you will also have the stunning Kids Room ensuring every kids fun holiday, game set and lots of fun.

First in the field 2010

Extensions and Awnings We came up with the Extension concept in 2008, followed a year later by a complete range of Awnings. Simply, each allows you to add a further dimension to your Outwell tent when it’s needed – whether you want to add an Extension for extra shelter or a whole Awning for an additional, fullyenclosed room.

First in the field 2008/2009

Extended Frame System The Outwell Extended Fame System is also unique. Here again, there is superior headroom and maximum stability, thanks to the initial strength of the tent’s main poles being able to support an offshoot pole via a cleverly designed special junction that also brings extra stability all-round.

First in the field 2008

Carpets and Footprints We were first to introduce the concept of Carpets and Footprints back in 2007. Carpets are for supreme in-tent underfoot comfort, ensuring a cosy, warm and homely feeling. A Footprint adds an extra dimension of insulation as well as protecting the main Groundsheet from direct contact with the ground, thus effectively extending the life of the tent.

First in the field 2007

First in the field 2005

Sealed Ground System An early example of Outwell’s practical thinking. By keeping the groundsheet as an integral part of the tent we were able to offer unique all-weather protection – from the ground upwards! A sealed-in groundsheet really is the most effective way of keeping as much mud and dirt as possible out of the tent. And it ensures no unwanted little guests in your tent!

Colour-coordination not only looks good, there are practical reasons, too. You’ll easily identify your own gear, and your kids will know exactly where their tent is no matter how busy the campsite!

outwell.com

How modern? How retro? The exciting new Sun Collection from Outwell manages to combine a great new look with an overall design that will also bring back camping memories of yesteryear. Because the main fabric is a special polycotton, it’s as if your tent has its very own air conditioning – keeping you cool when it’s hot and sunny, warm when the temperature starts to drop. Plus, polycotton tents always have their very own, unique atmosphere. This is further enhanced by the light colouring of the durable yet comfortable flooring beneath your feet. As well as three great new Sun Collection tents in stunning Topaz, we’ve developed a whole host of Mix & Match accessories for you to choose from to fully complement these stand-out tents.

Mix & Match for your Sun Collection tent The Sun style continues with some super-trendy accessories that mean you can complement the bright Topaz colouring with all the right gear for a warm and sunny holiday. For example, Warmy sleeping bags guarantee a great night’s sleep. Plus, you can add to your night time comfort with Timeout Flocks, in double or single, to keep the colour co-ordination going at bedtime. You’ll want the right storage for your food and drink, of course. Choose from a selection of three Cooltime bags and the Cooly Coolbox, ideal for keeping the drinks chilled to perfection! the tem Covering all the angles Testing Stabilizer Sys Nobody’s promising the weather is going to be perfect all the time, that’s why we design all our Wind tents and accessories for best performance, whatever the conditions. We’re always listening to the specific needs of family campers, and tent stability in windy conditions is a particular issue we’ve been addressing recently. For example, our latest OWS System (Outwell Wind Stabilizer System) ensures the whole tent stays taught by using Velcro tabs as a direct guyline attachment point for the flysheet and tent pole. Also new is our OEP System (Outwell Easy Pegging System), which really does live up to its name with its use of different pegs for different jobs when pitching. Simple, but so highly effective.

Wind Stabilizer System* A key development for 2011, our Wind Stabilizer System uses strong Velcro fastening system as a direct attachment point for the flysheet and tent pole. We know it’s the best for keeping the whole tent stable whatever the weather. We’ve proved it in the windiest test conditions, for example, using our very own wind simulator to show our tents can stand up to conditions high on the Beaufort Scale.

Easy Pegging System* Here is a simple but highly effective way of ensuring easy pitching as well as best all-weather performance. We use a different type of peg depending on the job required of it: Quality grey anchor steel for all four corners; luminous yellow to complement the guylines; and black heavy-duty plastic at the side pegging points. Just let the different colours of your pegs be your guide. Simple!

MONTANA 6 Tent of the Year 2011

Favourite tent? Officially, it’s the Outwell Montana 6, voted overall Tent of the Year as well as Best Family Tent in this year’s Camping Magazine Awards. 2011 sees three more wins for our tents in the prestigious Camping Magazine Awards. From the Premium Collection, the Montana 6 won the Best Family Tent category, while the DeLuxe Collection Nevada M came top in the Small Family/Tourer class. Adding to this double, the Montana 6 went on to scoop the overall top prize for Tent of the Year 2011. Plus, we gained a runners-up place in one of the accessory categories, for our new-for-2011 Kitchen Store.

Magazine’s Awards are fully independent and highly regarded. As Camping’s editor, Clive Garrett, puts it: “One hell of a lot of research, thought, discussion, sheer expertise and damn hard work goes into our judging. But, we all take pride in putting our names to the most prestigious camping awards in the UK. And we certainly know how to pick a winner! He adds: “Talk to Great British family campers and the tent the majority aspire to is the Outwell Montana 6. When you look at it in those terms, and consider the absolutely huge variety of choice out there in the shops, that’s a massive achievement. In fact, I’ve even met folk who own two Montanas!”

Camping is the UK’s leading monthly magazine for tent campers and nobody else has won as many prizes as us in its annual Awards, as judged by the UK’s top tent testers with backing from the magazine’s own readers’ panel of highly experienced experts. Camping

One Judge’s comments about the Montana 6 summed it up neatly: “Generous upgrades for next season make a great tent even greater!” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Our Kitchen Store concept allows you to stow all your camp cooking gear in one place, making everything easy to access from a softbag design that’s strong and supportive. Our vacation with Let us introduce you to the Banham family, proud owners of an Outwell Montana 6 and lots of other Outwell gear. There are five of them in this family – husband and wife Laura and Craig, plus their children Holly (11 years), Harry (nine) and Kate (six). Mum Laura tells their story. “We live in Norwich, Norfolk. We first went camping in 2007, not far from home, in a tent which had been given to us. We enjoyed camping but did not like the tent as it was too small and draughty. Camping near us was a family in a Montana 6 and we liked the look of the tent.

“When we returned from our camping trip, we went to our local camping shop and had a proper look round several tents. But still the Montana 6 was by far our favourite. We liked the size of it and the fact we could get our table inside and that we could stand up in it and walk around. The side porch is great for keeping shoes and other belongings stored, and we also found it useful that the tent is packed in a trolley instead of a carry bag. The size of the living area was what we liked the most. It is large enough for the children to play in on a rainy day. We love the fact it has a sewn-in groundsheet. This keeps out draughts and bugs.” “We have camped in France for the last two years which we have loved. We like camping in France as we feel the sites have better facilities for campers. The weather is better and we love the feeling of sitting outside the tent and relaxing.” “In France, we stayed on a campsite near Dol De Bretagne in Northern Brittany. The children enjoyed the swimming pool and the play area

the most and were constantly asking to go to these. Our pitch was a short distance away from the play area so they could play safely there. We visited the pool two or three times a day. We were also able to cook and eat all our meals outside, which we had not been able to do on previous camping holidays. We felt very relaxed because the weather was warm as we did not need to think of ‘wet weather’ activities. We all enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the holiday - my husband and I were able to read whilst the children played. We all enjoyed the French culture and the food. My children were fascinated by hearing a different language constantly and enjoyed saying a few French words.” “This year our wish is to go camping in Spain and of course we will bring our Montana 6. We are convinced that the Montana 6 will follow us many years ahead – maybe in a newer version soon.”

Getting the most out of your family camping Camping Tip

Always remember to check with the cam psite operator as well as your new neighbours before you play ball games near tents. People love to see kids having fun, but you don’t wan t to cause any damage to anyone else’s gear , no matter how accidental.

outwell.com

An instant hit when it was introduced in 2010, the Fantasy Collection is about more than just tents. Here, we really do go allout to put the fun into family camping, especially with the exclusive Outwell Game Set, Game Wall and Kids Room.

The fun comes as standard with Fantasy. We think you’ll agree: it’s quite simply the ultimate family tent. But don’t just take our word for it – the Fantasy Collection is prize winning by the authoritative Camping Magazine in its first ever annual Awards scheme.

Because games are good for you As we say, fun and games are part of the Fantasy offering. The Game Set includes table tennis bats, football, Frisbee and pump for a wide variety of fun and games. Each Fantasy tent comes with our versatile, colour-coordinated Game Wall – it’s adjustable for height and angle and can be attached directly to the tent or strung between two trees; and has different shaped holes for all kinds of ball play. The opportunities are endless, and all up to your children’s imaginations. Plus, with play situations like this, your children will soon be making friends with other kids on site.

18 - Camp Magazine 2011

The prize winning Fantasy Collection is more than this; we thought kids have their own room at home, and of course they should also have their very own room when on holiday and therefore we added the Kids Room. This is simply a child’s paradise – offering all kinds of play activities plus, at the end of the day, a restful place in which to drift off to sleep. It’s your children’s very own den in the tent – no adults allowed! Adding to this the Kids Room is packed with all kinds of child-friendly features from its kids-only entrance to special low ceiling with three soft balls and an overhead net for on-ur-back basketball, plus starry scenery when it gets dark. Perfect for fun in the day and a restful night’s sleep, time and time again. The very coveted Fantasy Collection has been extended to four tents for this season with the new five-room, six-plustwo Perception joining last year’s favourites, Imagine (sleeping three-plus-three), Magic (three-plus-two) and Explorer (two-plus-two) – all

in a bright blue Outtex速 4000 finish with taped seams. Other key Fantasy features include Dry Zip System, now with luminous piping, plus the latest Outwell Wind Stabilizer System and Easy Pegging System. Besides offering you and your family a tent filled with fun and games we also guarantee a safer and more secure family holiday.

Sun – welcome to a bright new future If your outlook on life is sunny, these are the tents for you! In superior polycotton and with their bright and sunny Topaz colour schemes and matching stripe-work, the all-new Sun Collection sees Outwell yet again expanding the boundaries for family camping. Featuring all the “air-conditioning” comforts of polycotton throughout, as well as key features such as Zip-out Groundsheets, these really are the tents of the moment. See also pages 10-11 and page 24-25. 22 - Camp Magazine 2011

find a full line-up of colour-coordinated accessories and options to accompany it – including all kinds of seating and furniture, bedding, tableware, lighting and so much more. But first you need the right tent. Welcome to our 2011 Collections.

Classic – tops for polycotton quality Named after American lakes, this is already firmly established as the definitive, market-leading polycotton tent range. We’re building on this with a number of new models for this year: Cedar Lake, Clear Lake and Montana Lake. In our exclusive Outtex® Airtech with superior alloy poles, these tents really do qualify as modern-day classics. Here, also, you’ll find the iconic Indian Lake. Inspired by the North American Indians, it’s the most distinctive tent you’ll ever see on a campsite.

Comfort – blending polycotton quality and competitive prices Named after American rivers, this line-up of tunnel tents in our stylish Mocca colouring features a full complement of Outwell’s family-friendly features for ease of pitching and superb performance. New model here is the five-person Columbia River, with Front Extension option. Our Comfort Collection tents are for those who want polycotton fabric at the most competitive prices.

AvantGarde – for supreme style as well as functionality Now in their third season, having proved an instant hit when they were introduced for 2009, AvantGarde tents and their distinctively different Mocca colouring are for the styleconscious. There is a whole new range for this Collection – Tennessee joins the Arkansas and Maryland line-ups – meaning there’s an AvantGarde for any family size. Key new features across the range include Wind Stabilizer System, Zip-up Curtains and the Easy Pegging System.

Premium – for quality family winners Watch out for distinctively stylish Luminous Piping on all Outwell Premium Collection tents this season, along with all kinds of the type of innovations that make these perennial family winners. We’ve added a whole new Premium, the Salinas L with Front Extension and Front Awning options, as well as the all-new Florida 8. New features include Zip-up Curtains, Wind Stabilizer System and more. And every Premium Collection tent has its very own stylish Trolley Bag.

DeLuxe – for the utmost choice There are more DeLuxes than any other kind of Outwell tent, offering you a comprehensive choice of family models. New ranges here for 2011 are Glendale (in stylish Mocca) and Monterey and Birdland (both in Sage Green). We also have a new Nevada, the six-berth Nevada XL. Watch out for the new panel colour design here, too, and new features like Toggle-up Curtains, Easy Pegging System and Wind Stabilizer System.

Fantasy – they’re the real thing! Blue is definitely the colour here. Introduced in 2010 and to instant success, including winning two Camping Magazine best tent awards, these are the tents if you like fun and games as part of your camping activities. The original Imagine, Magic and Explorer ranges are now joined by the Perception; it’s absolutely perfect for sleeping up to eight who want as much fun as possible out of their camping. See also pages 18-19 and 42-43.

Smart Tunnal Concept – pitching couldn’t be easier Instant pitching tunnel tents with even more choice of mouth-watering colours and the kind of features you’d normally only find in more expensive tents. There is also a new model for 2011 here – the four-person Fusion 400 is our largest Smart Tunnal to date! Just stick a Smart Tunnal in the boot of your car and you can pitch anywhere, any time – instantly. And Smart Tunnals in the Fusion range benefit from an Extended Porch Area. See also pages 20-21 and 44-45.

Touring – drive-away awnings with extra style These fully integrated drive-away awnings for campervans, MPVs and vans successfully combine Outwell tent expertise with clever attachment arrangements for fixing to vehicle sides. New for 2011 is the Highway, in Florida and California format, adding to the Mountain and Country from the Road range. Every Touring Collection model benefits from original Outwell colouring to fully complement the automotive theme, with breathable polyester Inner Tents, Footprints and Carpets among the options.

Add to

your options As a direct result of Outwell innovation, there are all kinds of ways you can add to the function, style and comfort of your Outwell family tent and really make it your very own home from home. Where appropriate, styling is an exact match to your tent in terms of colours as well as materials, allowing you to customize your tent to suit your needs. Here are our key offerings. Footprint A Footprint protects your groundsheet, also keeping it clean and dry. Furthermore it helps to insulate your tent from the cold ground beneath it. Like our Carpets, Footprints are made-to-measure.

Carpet Keep cosy underfoot by adding our popular, made-to-measure, fully-lined carpet. It’s ultra-soft on your feet, with a heavy-duty PVC backing plus it helps insulate the tent keeping you warm. Available for all our tents (except Smart Tunnals).

Front Extension and Side Extension Ideal for extra storage room, you can add a Front or Side Extension as needs arise. Our open-fronted Extensions are designed to fully complement the shape and colouring of the main tent. Large side windows add to the spaciousness.

Consider this one step on from a Front Extension. Our fully-enclosed Awnings also come with a Detachable Bathtub Groundsheet, meaning you are effectively adding an extra room to your tent.

Windscreen Ideal for protection from unwanted breezes, for example when you’re cooking, our Windscreens also add security. Plus there are window panels to allow you to look out, for example if you are sat by your Windscreen. As ever, they’re in colours to fully complement your tent. Awning

Tarp The perfect solution if you want a freestanding shelter area at the front or side of your tent. With just two poles, it couldn’t be easier to pitch.

Outwell family life

with the Warrens Wow, have you ever met a family like this? And they're Outwell through and through!

The Warrens were so keen about our tents and gear, they couldn’t wait to tell us about their passion for all things Outwell. Honestly, we’d never heard of them until they decided to get in touch with us. But, what ambassadors they are for the Outwell brand. We hope you can see for yourselves their sheer enthusiasm for family camping, the Outwell way. Meet the family – Trevor and Jaki Warren, daughter Laura and her partner Adam, plus their three-year-old daughter Faith and baby son Lewis. Then there’s another daughter – Carly, her husband Stewart, and daughter Aimee-Lou (10). Plus, Trevor’s parents, Jeannette and Brian; Jaki’s parents Terry and Jean; Jaki’s sisters, Fred (Shirley) and Terry-Jean and their families. Sometimes they even all camp together! Here, Trevor tells their story...

Bring on the barbecue! 50 - Camp Magazine 2011

“We all love our Outwell tents and the awnings/canopies – and the soft and warm carpets and furniture and more. The grandchildren like the whole idea of camping and love Outwell for making it happen – six years ago none of the family would camp due to previous memories of miserable weather and poor tent quality!” “Jaki and I are now on our second Vermont XL (we always seemed to need ever larger space to cater for the guests!). We have passed our first XL to

our son Gavin and we purchased a brand new Montana 6 for our daughter Laura. Our other daughter has a Hartford XL. I also keep a pop-up Jersey S for friends to stay over.” “Each of us now has all the Awnings, Carpets, Windscreens etc for our tents. Every one of us is an Outwell fan. The quality of the tents is very important to us – we have a wide range of ages to cater for and the sealed-in groundsheets and weatherproofing and overall comfort and flexibility are vital.” “One of my life’s loves is to sit under a canopy in the evening with a hot drink and a deck of cards or a board game and soak up the atmosphere of the family all laughing and joking. I often stay up well in to the early morning with the boys catching up with events and sharing memories over a mug of coffee. It is so peaceful and it really recharges my batteries.”

A bedroom deluxe!

“We rate our trip to the New Forrest as a highlight as we only went with my parents (Jaki could really relax without having to worry about feeding us all!). Jaki and I are now looking for a smaller tent – we like the Oakland XL – so that we can just up sticks and travel about a bit more to enjoy the countryside on our own.” The Warrens certainly know how to make the most of their accommodation. They can fit wardrobes, cupboards and kitchens into their respective tents – and there’s still plenty of living and sleeping space for all the family! “Last season was great as Outwell brought out a new range of furniture that sets up in literally seconds. We wanted a proper wardrobe to put our spare clothes in – I picked the Martinique up and quickly discovered that furniture was no longer a cause for concern! We keep one side as a set of shelves and fairly (so my wife tells me) split them for our smaller items. The other side we have opened all the shelves up and use as a full length wardrobe unit for coats, dresses and such – the little hooks on the outside are great for hanging dressing gowns and heavily used items, too. There are also little pockets on the outside I find great for hiding my secret midnight snacks in... I should also mention the tent itself – those mesh pockets are great for keys, cameras, tools (peg hammers etc.), maps, books, torches and other items.”

There are even more outdoor cooking options from Outwell this season, starting with a whole new range of Chef Cooker stoves and grills in a variety of styles and configurations. It’s all about great taste

Ingredients

Mums Jambalaya

1 large onion, peeled and chopped 1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 3 tablespoons cooking oil 1 green pepper and 1 red pepper, chopped 2 stalks of celery cut into 1 inch pieces 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon chilli sauce or 1 tsp of dried chilli powder 1 teaspoon thyme (dried is fine) 8oz long grain rice 8oz chicken breast choppe d 4oz chorizo chopped Salt and pepper 1 tablespoon sugar

Cooking time: 30 minutes You met the Warren family on pages 46-47. Here is one of their favourite campsite recipes. It’s their take on Jambalaya and, as they say, can easily be adapted to suit all tastes. Serves four.

For the sauce: Fry half of the chopped onion and peppers together with the celery and garlic gently in the oil for 3-4 minutes, until softened. Add the chilli, tinned tomatoes, sugar, thyme and season. Simmer gently for 20 minutes. Allow to cool. Place in a measuring jug, cover and refrigerate. This sauce will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

For the jambalaya: Fry the remainder of the onion and peppers in oil for 2-3 minutes, until the onion is caramelised. Add the chicken and chorizo and fry for a further 3-4 minutes. Add the rice and stir to coat in the oils released from the chorizo. Stir in the sauce together with twice the volume of the sauce in water. Bring to the boil and gently simmer, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked (usually about 20 minutes).

Serving tip The Warrens often prepare the sauce the evening before they set out, so they have a real tasty meal guaranteed on their first night on site!
