Letters Breaking Barriers Begins Holiday Food Drive

Breaking Barriers has begun their annual effort to collect food to deliver to local people living with HIV/AIDS in our area this holiday season.

They are asking for your help in five ways: 1. Make a monetary donation in person at the Breaking Barriers Office or online. Each food basket costs $25 to make, but any amount helps. You can bring your extra canned food to their offices, located at 2210 21st St. They are accepting food from noon until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the office and other times by appointment.

Mr. Bolt Corrects the Record

In the October 25, 2012 issue of Outword we reported that Mr. Bolt Leather 2012 Miguel Rubio had raised $50,000 for local charities and nonprofits. Rubio has informed us that the actual amount was over $15,000.

We apologize for the mistake in the dollar amount, but as an ambassador for Sacramento’s LGBT community, Rubio has easily surpassed that amount.

A Night to Fight Bullying

One in four teachers see nothing wrong with bullying, even though bullying in schools is rampant, and 56 percent of students have reported being picked on; two out of five for their appearance or body size.

Sadly, nine out of ten gay kids report being bullied, threatened or injured at school, and a victim of bullying is twice as likely to commit suicide as a child who is not.

Yet something can be done: Schools with strong rules of conduct and fair discipline practices report less bullying. Education is the key.

To help reinforce that message, Carina Lampkin, a lesbian and the owner of Blackbird Kitchen & Bar, and Shara P. Murphy, Sacramento G&L Center ED are hosting “A Night to Fight Bullying,” a fundraiser for the Center’s youth programs.

Miguel Diaz Joins Sac. G&L Center’s Board

T

he Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center Board of Directors has appointed Miguel Diaz as its newest board member, citing his community activism and experience working with local non-profits.

“Miguel has been a longtime activist in the LGBT community especially in the area of HIV issues,” said David Heitstuman, President of the Center’s Board of Directors. “He has a wide breadth of experience in assisting non-profits, especially in the area of fundraising, and will be a tremendous asset as the Center moves forward to grow and better serve the thousands of members of the LGBT community in the greater Sacramento region.”

Diaz is a budget analyst with the California Water Resources Control Board and a member of the board of directors of the Capital City Aids Fund.

“I am excited to be joining the Center’s board at such a pivotal time in the organization’s history,” said Diaz. “There is a great opportunity for the Center to lead in advocating and educating on healthy living and I look forward to helping lead that effort.”

Supreme Court to Consider Hearing Proposition 8 Case

T

he United States Supreme Court has indicated that it will consider whether to grant review in Hollingsworth v. Perry (formerly Perry v. Brown), the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8.

The Perry case, along with several cases challenging the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), will be considered at the Justices’ private Conference scheduled for Tuesday, November 20.

Lambda Awards to Recognize Our Heroes

T

he Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center will honor two important figures whose legacies will certainly be a part of California’s LGBT history, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and a long overdue posthumous recognition of Stan Hadden, one of Sacramento’s earliest HIV/AIDS activists, at this year’s Lambda Awards.

Although a Democratic Assemblymember from the Los Angeles area, Pérez has spent so much time in Sacramento that he has been adopted by many as our unofficial favorite son. He has attended and officiated at many Sacramento events, including being the Grand Marshall of the 2010 Sacramento Pride Parade.

Pérez is the first openly gay Assembly legislature in California to become Speaker of the Assembly, and the second nationally to reach that office. In the Assembly and in the Speaker’s office, he has been an outspoken advocate of marriage equality, the repeal of DADT and DOMA and is a member of the LGBT Legislative Caucus.

Stan Hadden was 35 when he died from complications of AIDS on December 2, 1991.

He was a senior administrative aide to state Senate President Pro Tempore David A. Roberti and one of the most influential voices

on AIDS policies in Sacramento, where he also worked as a reporter and editor for Mom…Guess What! newspaper. He is credited with spurring the passage of the Senate bill which established the California AIDS Advisory Committee in 1983, the 1985 legislation which encouraged a coordinated approach to local AIDS programs and services, and was an early supporter of needle exchange programs to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

Hadden served on Sacramento’s Mayor’s Task Force on AIDS, a City/County effort formed in January 1986 and tasked with recommending public policy relative to methods of transmission prevention; human services; protection of high risk groups from discrimination; and public information and education. He also was a board member of the Sacramento AIDS Foundation and spearheaded the creation of CARES.

The 2012 Lambda Awards mark a return of the ceremonies after a few years absence that were originally started when the Sacramento G&L Center was known as the Lambda Center. The awards seek to remind us of those who have paved the way, and of those who are leading the way to a future more inclusive of the LGBT community.

Learn How to Change a Child’s Life During National Adoption Month

N

ovember is recognized as National Adoption Month, providing a platform to build awareness of the tremendous need for families to come forward to provide permanence through adoption. How bad is the need? Nationally, there are more than 400,000 children living in foster care.

The largest population of youth in care is in California, with nearly 59,000 children and youth living in foster care. Of those, more than 3,000 reside in the Greater Sacramento Region.

To honor National Adoption Month, multiple community events are taking place to build awareness. “By attending these events, guests will be informed of the need and opportunities to become a parent while, at the same time, have the ability to talk directly to local agencies about their services and programs,” said Sara Hanson, Public Relations Specialist for Sierra Forever Families.

On November 14, a four-hour public awareness vigil will be held at the California State Capitol, north steps, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Government officials, child advocates, community representatives, business leaders and adoptive families will participate in the “Calling Out of Names of Children Who Wait,” each reading aloud 100 names and ages of children living in California foster care. Over 5,000 names of children and youth, who are ready and waiting to be adopted, will be spoken.

This annual vigil touches the lives of those who participate and those who are recognized.

On November 17, the Heart Gallery of Sacramento will host its annual event at The Citizen Hotel, 926 J Street, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Capital City Classic Draws Top Players to Sacramento

T

his Veteran’s Day weekend, an inevitable display of sheer athleticism and sportsmanship will be in full display as Sacramento gears up for one of the largest gay volleyball tournaments on the West Coast — the Capital City Classic.

With the tournament just around the corner, the Capital City Volleyball Club is excited to present a fun-filled weekend for the athletes and locals that include a registration party at Faces, a seeding party and fashion show at Badlands, and the actual games at Jackson Sports Academy.

“We raised the bar for this year’s Capital City Classic and it’s going to be exciting and huge,” said Ray Mapeso, tournament director.

“We almost doubled the number of teams competing this year compared to 2011.” This may be the largest LGBT volleyball tournament Sacramento has hosted, added Mapeso.

Entertainment Las Vegas Puts the Sin Back in Sin City

I recently spent several days at the Blue Moon, a required stop for gay men who want to experience the sexy side of Las Vegas, just off the Strip. That gay-owned resort is still going strong, and it provides a safe haven for men who want to meet other men in a clean, classy setting.

Gay men will also want to check out Share Nightclub, a two-story bar and disco that hosts Sin City’s most popular new gay night, Stripper Circus, which features Friday fun that includes carnival games, gambling and the hottest male strippers in town.

Another red-hot destination in Vegas is the eye-opening Erotic Heritage Museum. A vast, two-story site with 17,000 square feet of permanent and featured exhibit space, EHM is dedicated to the celebration of sex and the preservation of erotic artifacts, fine art and film.

While in Vegas, I saw four of the sexiest shows on The Strip and filed these reviews.

I had seen this “adult” Cirque du Soleil show a number of years ago and enjoyed it but didn’t love it.

Playing indefinitely at the New York, New York casino, the production has been partially revamped and nicely freshened up with new cast members, and I liked it much more this time.

Hosted by a statuesque drag queen named Edie, Zumanity features a potpourri of sensual acts aimed at every sexual persuasion.

or men who dress like women, you’ll find what you’re looking for on this steamy stage. Heck, there’s even a hunky dwarf, if you’re into that.

A sexy show that avoids being smutty, Zumanity combines all of the class you’ve come to expect from a Cirque du Soleil show, only with a decidedly sexual edge.

Hosted by the gloriously sleazy Gazillionaire and his equally foul-mouthed partner, Penny, the intimate production takes place on, around, and sometimes over a circular stage that is just six feet in diameter.

There isn’t a bad seat in the house, although the smallish wooden chairs, arranged in the round, are less than comfortable.

Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity”

is more regal than raunchy, and performers such as a hunk-a-licious male stripper or the two topless women getting wet in an enormous cocktail glass, stop just short of total nakedness.

My favorite acts included the strapping young man with the Mohawk who did aerial work over the audience, and the insanely sexy “goat” guy who stalked the stage in black fishnets.

You might even get picked to participate, as two lucky patrons did the night I saw the show, in a climactic on-stage “orgy” with the

Even so, the brisk, 90-minute production flies by, with each individual act topping the one before.

There is plenty of wild and wooly audience interaction, to the extent that if you are easily embarrassed, I would not recommend sitting in the front row.

The acts themselves are mostly non-sexual, but the patter by the host and hostess in between the performers is intentionally filthy, even by Vegas standards. Fans of Lisa Lampanelli-style humor will loveAbsinthe, but the easily

Le Reve, which translates as The Dream in French, consists of a series of dreamlike sequences involving dance, diving, gymnastics, aerial work and other remarkable feats of athleticism.

Featuring dozens of sexy, chiseled men and women getting wet and wearing very little, Le Reve is Steve Wynn’s attempt to outdo O, the original water ballet show from Cirque du Soleil, still playing up the street.

This fast-paced, tastefully topless strip show at the Planet Hollywood hotel starred reality television star and Playboy model Holly Madison the night I saw the show.

(Peepshow has since been recast with Coco Austin, wife of Ice-T, in the lead after Madison became pregnant.)

Madison couldn’t really sing and isn’t much of a dancer, but she looked great dressed as “Bo Peep,” and she popped her top with aplomb, producing applause and wolf whistles from the predominantly heterosexual date night crowd.

The four main singers in the show are more than capable, including the token guy – openly gay “hottie” Josh Strickland, who was the star of Disney’s ill-fated Tarzan musical on Broadway a few years back.

Two other male performers provide some serious beefcake for the wives and girlfriends in the audience: a hunky dancer who strips to the waist and even bares his buns at one point, and another “manimal” who performs a sexy rope-trick involving a bathtub, wearing only a wet, tight pair of jeans.

It’s the cheesecake that really drives the show, however, including a talented redhead who kicks off the strip numbers, and the gorgeous gal in green whose athletic routine Open Daily had the crowd in a real lather.

A Quartet of Broadway Cast Recordings Reviewed

F

or Broadway fans like me, a new cast recording is like Christmas, and the last year or so has seen some dynamite CDs of show released, including discs for The Book of Mormon, for the reigning Best Musical Tony winner Once, and for the recent revival of Porgy and Bess with Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis.

Here are reviews of four more just-released cast recordings that would make perfect stocking stuffers.– two of the shows played earlier this year in New York, and the other two are coming soon to Broadway.

Carrie the Musical

When the original musical version of the classic Stephen King novel flopped on Broadway in 1988, critics attacked it as if it was an abomination. Now, a quarter of a century later, the show looks like it was

ahead of its time. (Musicals based on Hollywood movies were practically unheard of back then; in 2012 they are the norm on Broadway.)

Now, Carrie is hot all over again, with a remake of the original movie set for release in 2013. This premiere cast recording for the recent, successful off-Broadway revival of the musical features Molly Ranson playing Carrie and a sensational Marin Mazzie as her crazy mother.

I did not see the show either time it played in New York, but this recording makes clear that a musical version of the story is not inherently doomed. The central story of a bullied young woman who wreaks revenge on her tormentors is, if anything, even timelier in the 21st Century.

Mazzie is in superb voice as Carrie’s religious fanatic mom, and Ranson has the required sweetness crossed with strength to pull off the difficult lead role. Also on the plus side, the music and lyrics, by Michel Gore and Dean Pitchford, respectively, are much better than I had been led to believe.

A Christmas Story the Musical

I am a huge fan of both the movie of A Christmas Story and the book it is based on, so a musical version had better be good. I won’t know for sure until I see the show on Broadway later this month, but if this

Center Encores production, a revival of the classic show that helped make Marilyn Monroe a musical comedy star on the big screen.

Ironically, the actress who stars in the new version is famous mostly for trying to win the role of Monroe in a Broadway musical on the recent hit television show Smash.

I am talking, of course, about Megan Hilty, the curvy blond who was actually a legitimate hit on Broadway well before she costarred with Katharine McPhee on Smash. Hilty is sensational as Lorelei Lee – especially on “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” – and she is supported by a crack cast that includes Aaron Lazar, Rachel York and Deborah Rush.

entertaining cast recording is any indication, those responsible for the show seem to have succeeded.

All of your favorite moments from the movie are intact, and set to song, including the infamous frozen tongue scene (“Sticky Situation”), the arrival of the leg lamp (“A Major Award”), and, of course, the terrifying trip to see Saint Nick at the department store (“Up on Santa’s Lap”).

Recordings continued from page 16 Jekyll & Hyde 2012 Concept Recording Fans of this Frank Wildhorn musical are anxiously awaiting its arrival on Broadway in April of 2013 after its current crosscountry tour wraps up. In the meantime, a CD for the show has already been released, which should help drum up business since it is very good indeed.

The original production helped make a star out of Linda Eder. The new version already has a star in R&B songstress Deborah Cox, the multi-talented dance diva who recently appeared in Sacramento at the 2012 Rainbow Festival. Cox is dynamite on

the disc, as are her costars Teal Wicks and Constantine Maroulis.

Mr. Bolt Leather 2013 Contest Congratulations to Robert Brooks, the new Mr. Bolt Leather 2013. Brooks won the title at a contest held at The Bolt Bar on Saturday, Oct. 20. Jason Huff-Cook was the first runner-up in the contest that featured leather title holders and dignitaries from across the country and featured a live performance by Raquela and a great tribute to stepping down MR. Bolt Leather 2012 Miguel Rubio, who raised over $15,000 for local charities during his tenure.
