Aging and Other Fun Thoughts Commentary by Bob Scrivano and Gary Lieberman

E

very day in Sacramento, and the rest of California, gay and lesbian individuals struggle with difficult and frustrating problems, both political and personal. This discussion is intended to be personal. For years we have seen an aging LGBT population forced to deal with financial and estate planning issues for which they have not always been prepared. Who gets my stuff? Who can, and will, make decisions for me if I cannot? Where will I go? Can I lose my property? Have I ignored the changes that come with aging? What if I am not married or registered as domestic partners? These are questions that all too often are ignored and left to chance. As a result we have seen both individuals and couples struggle with issues they thought would never impact them; loss of financial independence, estrangement from family, immature or incomplete documents, lack of care, conservatorships, isolation from loved ones, even loss of legal rights. These issues have become realities on an all too large scale. The two great questions of growing older are; Who will take care of me? and, how will I pay for care?

If you do not have the answer to both of those questions, then you have put all that you have at risk. Because the LGBT population has special issues faced by no one else, they need to be especially informed of their needs and dilemmas. On Saturday June 1, at 11 a.m. we will be holding a free workshop at Headhunters, right here in Sacramento, to address all of these issues and more. Come join us for a free brunch where we will provide information and answers, that could change your life. Seating is VERY limited so reservations are a must. Please call 800-999-8007 or email, bob@assetsandaging.com to make your reservations, today. It will be one of the best decisions you make this year. Bob Scrivano, of Assets & Aging, is heard every Sunday on KFBK 1530AM, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Gary Lieberman, is an Elder Law Attorney and radio host. Co-Sponsored by PaperLoveLLC.

A Trio Of Musicals Sing Out In Sacramento

L

overs of musical theater have reason to rejoice as three new productions find homes on Sacramento stages, including a world premiere musical.

Bloodbrothers

Green Valley Theatre Company presents Willy Russell’s Liverpool-set musical about twin boys who grow up separately, then become best friends and fall in love with the same girl. Back in the day, former teen idols David and Shaun Cassidy starred in Bloodbrothers, which is loosely based on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas. Bloodbrothers plays through May 19 at The Grange Performing Arts Center on V Street in Sacramento. Visit www.greenvalleytheatre.com.

Showtune

Chautauqua Playhouse in Carmichael teams up with Sutter Street Theatre in Folsom for this co-production that celebrates the music of the great Jerry Herman, composer of highly-acclaimed shows such as Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage Aux Folles. Conceived by Paul Gilger, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, Showtune is a fast-paced revue that features forty of Herman’s greatest songs. Showtune plays May 10 through June 16 in Carmichael before extending its run for four weeks in Folsom after the Chautauqua dates. Visit www.cplayhouse.org.

Tyler Wipfli as Mariette (center) and the Servant Ensemble in a scene from A Little Princess.

A Little Princess

This world premiere musical recently opened at Sacramento Theatre Company to solid, if unspectacular, reviews. Based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess is about a rich girl who is forced to work as a servant after her beloved father’s untimely demise. Director Michael Laun successfully exploits the inspirational qualities in the work, but the current production, featuring a book by William J. Brooke, feels too long and too slow for a family show. I have never read the original book, but on stage, the story plays out predictably. On the plus side, the music by Eric Rockwell is engaging, and the lyrics by Margaret Rose are often clever. A Little Princess plays through May 19 at STC. Please visit www.sactheatre.org.

Jason Walker Beats It

O

Michael De Souza as Ram Dass and Josh Powell as Tom Carrisford in a scene from A Little Princess.

Why is now the time to bring the world together? Look around. Young kids are being bullied and people are getting killed because of their sexual preference. At the GLAAD Awards last month, Madonna brought up a great point, she reminded us that Jesus said love thy neighbor as thy self.

Gotta love it when Madonna preaches. (Laughing) Just Like a Prayer. What’s something your fans would be surprised to learn about you, Jason? Hmmm… I almost went to college to study Ornithology. How’s that? I can name almost every bird that I see. Beat Don’t Stop is available on iTunes now, or visit www.jasonwalkermusic.com

by Skip Sheffield

ut Music Award winner Jason Walker returns to the dance floor this spring with Beat Don’t Stop. Currently #5 on the Billboard dance chart, the track is more than a club anthem, it’s a metaphor for the power of music and how beats unite revelers on the dance floor. “There’s so much poverty, so much anguish, so much hate in the world,” Walker says in talking about the new track. “People are finally beginning to realize that we must celebrate our differences. It’s important to come together, spread love, compassion and understanding – especially to those who march to a different drummer. We’re so close to the prize, it’s vital that we don’t let the beat stop now.” Outword wanted to share more about Walker’s approach to music with you, and some of the fun he has had along the way, so we sat down and had a talk with him. What was the inspiration behind Beat Don’t Stop? Chris Rodriguez was the mastermind behind the song. When we were in the studio recording it, we kept talking about togetherness and how dance music, more than any other genre, inspires feelings of love and togetherness. What first attracted you to dance music?

Josh Powell as Tom Carrisford and Jerry Lee as Captain Crewe in a scene from A Little Princess.

I was raised with disco and Motown always playing in the house. My mother has the most amazing collection of 45s. It would be the envy of every DJ. Who are some of your nightlife inspirations? Joi Cardwell, Inaya Day, Barbara Tucker; and my idol, Kristine W. Also, legends like Sylvester and DJs like Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha and Digweed, Quentin Harris, Frankie Knuckles. They have all inspired me to want to be a better performer, to try and get to their level, if that’s even possible. When the bar is set so high, sometimes the height is simply unobtainable, but I just want to get there so badly. What was it like to perform with Kristine W? Life changing! I’ve performed with Kristine a few times now. Every time, it is surreal. More than any other, she really shaped me as a singer. To be on the same stage with her is always a real high for me.

Jason Walker.

We Get the Capitalism We Deserve guest commentary by Handyman Brandon

M

any liberals often associate the word “capitalism” with greed, monopolistic corporations, gargantuan environmental disasters and social inequality. While it is true that there is nothing in the capitalist economic model that prevents these elements from existing in business, there is also no requirement that a capitalist business operate immorally or without social and environmental consideration. Plenty of businesses pay their employees a living wage, exceed environmental regulations and support the community that supports them. Yet those businesses are just as “capitalist” as the greedy corporations that wallow in sweat shops and pollution. The problems we associate with capitalism are the result of

decide what business owners provide for you. Companies will only reinvest their profits in goods or services that people will pay for, and they will quickly abandon products that society no longer appreciates. If we simply would educate ourselves on where our money is going and collectively

As it’s defined, capitalism is “…an economic system in which the production and distribution of goods depend on invested private capital and profit making.” human greed and selfishness, not capitalism. As it’s defined, capitalism is “…an economic system in which the production and distribution of goods depend on invested private capital and profit making.” What businesses do with that profit is optional. They could roll in it wastefully like many do, or they could offer child care/pet sitting for their employees, continued education, paid volunteer time, build libraries or simply adopt highways. That’s still capitalism. We are all familiar with “supply and demand” though few people actually think about what that means. The supply does not create the demand; the demand creates the supply. redirect our hard earned dollars to companies that were socially and environmentally conscious, (thereby creating a new demand,) then the giant corporations that seem to be taking over the world would eventually shrivel up and die. Oil companies, big banks, homophobic businesses, all of them would collapse if we stopped hurling money at them like it was rice at a wedding. Corporations may be legally liable for environmental disasters or for the wealth inequality in our country, but regular Americans like me and you are the ones who allowed it to happen. We’re also the only ones who can stop it. Handyman Brandon is a local business owner and the Festival Logistics Manager for Sacramento Pride. He can be reached at handymanbrandon@gmail.com.

Stonewall’s Four Freedoms Awards 2013 to Recognize Sacramento’s Best

S

acramento’s LGBT Stonewall Democrats will recognize the contributions of five Sacramento area residents who have each, in their own individual ways, made Sacramento a better place at Stonewall’s 9th annual Four Freedom Awards dinner. The Four Freedoms Awards are based on a speech given by President Franklin Roosevelt in his annual address to congress on January 6, 1941, in which he warned that “I find it, unhappily, necessary to report that the future and the safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders.” “In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms,” Roosevelt continued in his address. “The first is freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world. “The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world. “The third is freedom from want — which, translated into world terms, means

economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world. “The fourth is freedom from fear — which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor — anywhere in the world. Today, those words still ring true, and the below Four Freedom Awards 2013 recipients best exemplify the Sacramentans that worked for and strive to strengthen those freedoms: Freedom of Speech — West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon; Freedom of Worship — Rev. Faith Whitmore, District Director, Congressman Dr. Ami Bera; Freedom from Want — Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna; Freedom from Fear — Dr. Claire Pomeroy, UC Davis Health System; and additionally President’s Award — Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen. “I am very honored to be receiving the Stonewall President’s Award” said Hansen in a released statement. “Many have noted the importance of my election as the first openly-gay member of the Sacramento City Council, which Stonewall helped make happen with their tremendous support. However, this award means much more to me, because ten years ago Stonewall gave me my start, mentored me and inspired me to engage in the political process.” The ceremonies will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, and dinner service and the awards will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Red Lion Woodlake Hotel, 500 Leisure Lane on Wednesday, May 15. LCR Relaunches with Aggressive Strategy for 2013

The LGBT Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) have unveiled the organization’s new logo, website and strategic vision for 2013 and beyond at the “Reunite and Relaunch” celebration held recently in Washington, D.C. LCR Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo said the new vision would hold the Republican Party more accountable on LGBT issues and seek to strengthen and leverage local chapters in order to gain Republican allies where they matter most: at the state level. Visit the new website at www.LogCabin.org.

French Lawmakers Approve Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Despite ongoing protests and strong opposition from the Roman Catholic Church, French lawmakers on Tuesday, April 23 voted to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill was approved by the Senate earlier this month and now goes to President Francois Hollande, who has stated he will sign it. France now joins Uruguay and New Zealand, who also approved same-sex marriage this month, and eleven other nations that have legalized same-sex marriage.

Idaho Amends Policy for Changing Gender on Licenses

The Idaho Transportation Department has amended its policy regarding changes to driver’s licenses to allow transgender individuals to correct the gender markers on their licenses without showing proof they have undergone surgery. The U.S. State Department no longer requires transgender people to have surgery before it will correct the gender marker on passports, and the majority of states do not require surgery for changing the gender marker on a driver’s license.

RI Senate Now 10th State with Marriage Equality

The Rhode Island Senate and House of Representatives have approved legislation that would end the denial of marriage to same-sex couples in Rhode Island, and Governor Lincoln Chafee, has now signed the law. “New England is now complete. Through court rulings, legislative action, and wins at the ballot, loving and committed couples from Bangor to Burlington, Providence to Portland, and Cambridge to Concord will soon be able to join in the freedom to marry,” said Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry. Same-sex couples will now be able to marry in ten states and the District of Columbia and in the coming weeks, action is expected on freedom to marry legislation in Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota and Nevada.

ENDA Introduced in Congress – Again

With bipartisan support, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act was once again introduced in both houses of Congress on April 25. However, unlike the original bill introduced in 1994, and almost every year since, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2013 (ENDA) would prohibit most public and private employers from discriminating against workers not only based on their sexual orientation, but also on their gender identity. “We are fully committed to continuing to work for the passage of ENDA and an appropriate exemption for religious organizations,” the American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal, National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Transgender Law Center said in a joint statement. We remain hopeful that our allies in Congress will agree that singling out LGBT people alone for this kind of unequal and unfair exemption to otherwise applicable non-discrimination laws has no place in this historic legislation.”

ome 125 cyclists and 75 volunteer crew members will ride out from Folsom Lake on Thursday, May 16, as part of the ninth annual NorCal AIDS Cycle, a four-day, 330-mile journey to raise funds and awareness for the fight against HIV/AIDS. “NCAC is the largest and only organization in Sacramento right now that raises much needed funds for the HIV community,” says Emily Rymland, NCAC board president, veteran cyclist, and a nurse practitioner at CARES, one of the NCAC beneficiary organizations. “The need is enormous and imperative. Youth are directly impacted; one in four new infections are in people between the ages of 13 and 24. We have got to get a handle on prevention. There are no longer state dollars for this. It’s on us.” Highlights of the ride include the 7 a.m. Opening Ceremony on May 16 at Beals Point, Folsom Lake; Red Dress Day, during which cyclists create a moving ribbon of

The Comedy of Bonfire Sandra Hits Grass Valley

T

he untamed and highly lustrous Sandra Bernhard is set to tear the roof off of the Center for The Arts in Grass Valley, and I was lucky enough to enjoy a conversation with her in anticipation of what promises to be a very funny night of comedy. Bernhard has intrigued audiences for decades with her unique roles on both stage and screen. The New York Times described Bernhard as a “living, breathing bonfire.” They have also applauded her show by calling it “an angst driven, foul-mouthed, poison-laced joy ride that banks and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity, rock and religion.” Her elusive career as a performer began in Los Angeles, where she eventually hit the famed Comedy Store. “I’d run all over town to perform and by the time I got to the Comedy Store, it was a big deal.” Bernhard explains, “It was really a no holds bar situation. It gave me an opportunity to develop my craft night after night.” Bernhard would often perform alongside legends such as George Carlin and David Letterman. In 1977 she was picked up as a contributor to the Richard Pryor Show and in 1982 she was cast in the Martin Scorsese film, The King of Comedy in which she delivered an intensely dynamic, yet somewhat disturbing performance and earned the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. Getting back to her true love, live comedy,

she ambitiously developed her own material and scored rave reviews in New York for her one woman shows. Without You I’m Nothing ran for an incredible six months off Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. The act

was recorded and received a Grammy nomination in 1988. Bernhard shares, “Every night there was someone so amazing like Mary Tyler Moore to John Kennedy Jr. that would come to see the show. It was just endless fun and so inspiring to me as an entertainer.” In the late 80s Bernhard became a regular eccentric guest on the Late Show with David Letterman. Her appearances caught mass public attention due to her off-beat, uninhibited and energetic personality. “Every time you do a show like that there’s a pre-interview, so you have a place to go in case you can’t improvise,” said Bernhard. That was never an issue with her as she explains, “We never got to the material, it was like a real conversation.” One memorable appearance with then friend Madonna created media frenzy and the world was drawn into a relationship fueled by youth, fame and liberty. In the 90s she made history as America’s first openly bisexual character, Nancy Bartlett in the iconic comedy sitcom, Roseanne. Bernhard’s character became a favorite among viewers during the Emmy Award winning show’s nine season run. Bernhard gushes, “Roseanne and I have stayed very good friends and I’m so glad to say that we’re still in touch, she’s awesome. SANDRA continues on page 18

Beam Me Up for the New Star Trek Movie At IMAX

T

he blockbusters are coming fast and furious at Sacramento’s Esquire IMAX on K Street. Tom Cruise’s Oblivion was quickly replaced by Iron Man 3, which will vacate after a couple of weeks to make way for the latest big screen Star Trek feature film, entitled Into Darkness.

This is director JJ Abrams’s sequel to his terrific 2009 Star Trek movie reboot. Into Darkness will again feature sexy Chris Pine as a young Kirk and openly gay actor Zachary Quinto as Spock. The new movie is bound to be one of the big hits of this summer movie season. If you simply must be the first on your block to see this highly anticipated popcorn flick, the Esquire IMAX will host advance public screenings of Star Trek Into Darkness on Wednesday, May 15, beginning at 8 p m. HBO Goes Behind The Candelabra With Liberace

H

BO will present the pay-cable movie event of the year when acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh’s red-hot Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, premieres on the network this May 26 at 9 p.m. There will be rhinestones for days (and two infamously closeted gays) as Soderbergh (Magic Mike) tells the story of a clandestine love affair between the flamboyant pianist, played by Michael Douglas, and his hunky young chauffer, portrayed by none other than Matt Damon. The HBO film is based on a 1988 memoir by Scott Thorson, the young man who was hired by Liberace to be his companion and lover during their secret five-year

relationship. The film also stars Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, and the one and only Debbie Reynolds, as Liberace’s beloved mother. Behind The Candelabra is getting tremendous buzz, and it may be the last new movie from Soderbergh, director of Traffic and Erin Brockovich, who says he wants to retire from making features. Don’t miss it.

Jamie’s Broadway Grille Is an Undiscovered Dining Delight

I

by Hunt Druin

t’s hard to believe that in the 14 years I’ve lived in Sacramento, I’d yet to dine at Jamie’s Broadway Grille on Broadway and 5th. They’re not open on weekends and I guess it never crossed my mind as a mid week option. However, I had the day off recently and my date and I decided to give it a try. Man, I’m glad I did!

Jamie’s is a very nondescript place with a green awning out front and tons of cars around it (always a good sign). I walked into the dark dining room, my eyes adjusted, and I saw that the place was packed. Fortunately, there was one table open so we didn’t have to wait, and we were greeted by a very friendly server who got us situated right away. Our waitperson was with us immediately and brought us some really tasty iced tea. This Irish pub’s menu offers the standard fare you’d expect at a diner – burgers, sandwiches and salads. It really has a surprisingly full menu though, with everything from In House Smoked Prime Rib to such comfort foods as Navy Bean & Ham soup. We looked at other tables to see what the patrons preferred and everything looked really good with hearty portions. I decided on my favorite sandwich, a prime rib French dip to make a comparison with other places. It was great! Lots of tender juicy meat piled on a soft sourdough roll. I

couldn’t be happier. I tasted my date’s fish and chips (a dish I’ve never enjoyed too much, to be honest). The fish was light and surprisingly flavorful. I might consider ordering it next time if there weren’t so many other options. The guests at the table next to us were enjoying a huge Cobb salad, a juicy cheeseburger, and some clam chowder. By the comments they were making (and some appropriate moans of

pleasure), they were happy campers, too. When the bill came, we were pleased that it was a really affordable outing. The only drawback, if you can call it that, was having our eyes adjust to the sunny day outside, lol. If you’ve been to Jamie’s, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, don’t be a fool and wait 14 years like I did. Get there this week! Jamie’s Broadway Grille is located at 427 Broadway. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and dinner is served from 5 to 9 p.m. For more information, give them a call at 916-442-4044 or check out their menu and daily specials at www.JamiesBroadwayGrille.com.

Everybody was so incredibly talented and we had such a good time.” Bernhard continues to create sharp, insightful and unapologetic material, in a way that only she can. She completed her most recent project titled I Love Being Me, Don’t You? and yet again received favorable reviews from critics. The Los Angeles Times states, “Her show may be a loose grab bag, but the experience is like hanging out with a hip and funny friend who never fails to lift you up with her outrageous freedom.” When I asked if she would be bringing the glamour to Grass Valley, Bernhard replied with, “Absolutely, I bring it wherever I go. I bring it from the smallest venues to the biggest. Everyone deserves a good show.” Be sure that you’re one of the few to attend this intimate performance! Bernhard ends with, “Tell all the kids to come to Grass Valley, it’s going to be a beautiful evening in May and I’m looking forward to it!” Sandra Bernhard will be performing Saturday, May 18 at 8 p.m. at the The Center For The Arts, located at 314 West Main St. in Grass Valley. Christian Marclay: The Clock

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is currently presenting the S.F. premiere of artist Christian Marclay’s internationally heralded masterpiece The Clock, which is constructed from thousands of film clips indicating the passage of time. Christian Marclay: The Clock excerpts these moments from their original contexts and edits them together to form a 24-hour video montage that unfolds in real time.

The work is synchronized with local time so that minutes and hours depicted in The Clock also pass simultaneously in the viewer’s real time. Created in an editing tour de force over three years, The Clock features time-related moments both iconic and obscure – often showcasing a clock or watch – taken from silent classics and action blockbusters to Westerns and foreign films. Christian Marclay: The Clock will be on view in the fourth floor galleries of SFMOMA during regular museum hours. Visit www.sfmoma.org.
