It’s All About Pride, or Is It? commentary by Fred Palmer, Outword Publisher
I
have joked for years that Pride is like our own gay Christmas. The excitement builds and builds for that one day in our town when we rejoice and recognize who we are and what we have accomplished. There are numerous parties and receptions, the Pride Parade, and then, of course, the Pride Festival itself. The Parade brings contingents of people celebrating everything from their spirituality, their hobbies, their sexuality, their careers and just recently, their service in our military, without fear of retaliation. We laugh, we dance, we connect with old friends and we celebrate our diversity. It does not matter if we identify as L G B T Q Q I and all the letters of the alphabet soup that
make us who we are, we are out and strong at Pride. Some have told me that we really don’t need Pride celebrations any longer, and that they also have become too commercialized. My response is that as long as we have the need to fight for equality, we need Pride. As long as there are still kids getting bullied, and people committing suicide, due to their sexuality, we still need Pride. As long as there are health issues for our LGBT community, we need Pride. As for the “too commercial” part, well we need to support those that support our efforts. Our buying power should be something that we use as a tool to say thanks, as much as we use boycotts to threaten. Pride is an opportunity for gay owned and gay-supportive businesses and sponsorship supporters of Pride to meet the gay public and ask for your business, to earn it, and keep it. It is my hope that you, as a consumer, will choose to support and invest in businesses that are trendsetters in domestic partner benefits, as well as spend your money with small local merchants that want, and need, your gay dollar. Our money is as green as it is pink and powerful. Pride festivals are a good way to bring people and businesses together, and let everyone know who is supporting whom. Pride season is also a time to think about our gay history and our gay future. We must support and educate our gay youth so they can move toward a more positive future, and 2

so they can take the reins and build on the hard work of our LGBT elders and of our past battles. Pride is celebrated in June as a remembrance of the Stonewall riots. On that proud day in June 1969 a group of individuals stood up for their equality and freedom. Since that first celebration of pride following the Stonewall uprising of 1969, collectively we have fought many battles. Some of those battles we’ve won and some we’ve lost — both coming at great cost in time, energy, money and even lives. Pride events should be a venue to strengthen and focus our
political power, too. They should provide outreach for everyone, and anyone, who needs it; teach the never ending need for tolerance; and remember that segregation of any kind can be detrimental. Pride should be an opportunity for gay community centers and the many gay organizations to rally for support and get their message out, as well as ask for financial support. Our primary mission at Outword is to continue to inform you and inspire you to be proud and involved. Our mission is also to educate you, entertain you and provoke you — and to compel you to action. We are proud to have been able to do just that for over 18 years, twice a month, on time, every time! We are especially proud that with this issue, we are once again the “Official” program for Sacramento Pride at the Capitol. If it’s possible, we have tried to include even more of the values I spoke of above, into this very special edition of Outword. All of us here at Outword hope that you enjoy and explore Pride as much as we do. We thank you for reading us, supporting us and even guiding us for all these years, and we look forward to seeing you at this year’s Pride Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 15. LGBT Youth Smoke at Higher Rates than Their Peers

recent article in the American Journal of Public Health analyzed nationally representative survey results and found that LGBT adults smoke cigarettes at rates that are nearly 70 percent higher than the general population. Additionally, a new study from Legacy, a national public health nonprofit located in Washington, D.C., shows that LGB young adults ages 18-34 are also smoking at disproportionately high rates compared with their heterosexual counterparts. This is the first national survey measuring

“Tobacco use patterns among LGB young adults are vital to understand because the majority of smokers start smoking by age 26,” said Jessica Rath, Ph.D., MPH, CHES, Director of Research at Legacy and lead researcher for the study. “Our study shows that efforts must continue to reach out to the LGB community early to spread messages about tobacco’s deadly toll so that everyone can be informed about the benefits of quitting smoking or never starting.” Visit www.legacyforhealth.org/LGBT for more information.

Youth Equality Act Passes Senate, Moves to Assembly
T
he Youth Equality Act (SB 323), designed to bring youth group tax exemptions in line with California’s existing nondiscrimination laws, has passed the Senate with a vote of 27-9 making it the first LGBT rights bill to pass with a two-thirds majority in California history. SB 323 gets rid of a tax exemption for sales and use taxes, as well as corporate taxes, for youth groups that discriminate. Although nonprofits are private organizations, California law prohibits discrimination by the state based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or religious affiliation. Thus meaning that any state support of discriminatory organizations can be curtailed if organizations are not following the law. “Teaching discrimination against LGBT people can never be in the public interest,
and the time to end it is now,” said John O’Connor, EQCA executive director. “I am proud that my colleagues joined me today on the right side of history by voting for the Youth Equality Act,” stated Senator Lara. “The protections in this bill live beyond the transitory actions any group may take now or in the future. The LGBT community must be protected in perpetuity.” The bill now moves on to the Assembly. For more information please visit this link: http://www.senate.ca.gov/lara or www.eqca.org.
New Poll Shows Majority in California Support Marriage for Same-Sex Couples
C
alifornia is ready for the resumption of marriage for samesex couples, Equality California announced on June 3, based on polling of likely voters showing 55 percent favor the freedom to marry, an increase of 18 percent since 2004.
Intensity of support has increased dramatically as well, with those who strongly favor the freedom to marry increasing from 24 to 42 percent over the same time period. “California is ready for every loving couple to be able to marry, and we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will rule to restore the freedom to marry,” said John O’Connor, EQCA executive director. “Our new polling shows support for the freedom to marry is strong and broad, and continues to grow.” The polling, conducted by David Binder Research, of 800 likely voters throughout the state, shows significant increases in support in nearly every demographic, including Republicans, voters aged 45 to 64, African Americans and Latinos. A majority of African Americans, Latinos, and Asian and Pacific Islanders all now support the freedom to marry, according to the poll. In 2011, 31 percent of Californians strongly favored the freedom to marry, while 36 percent strongly opposed. The new polling shows 42 percent strongly favor, with outwordmagazine.com
31 percent strongly opposed. The poll has a margin of error of 3.5 percent. The poll also showed that talking to friends and family about the importance of marriage is a powerful tool for moving opinion. Those who have had a conversation with someone they know personally about why marriage for same-sex couples is important favor marriage by 73 to 26 percent; those who haven’t had a personal conversation about it favor marriage by 45 to 41 percent, a net increase in support of 43 percent. “The simple act of having a conversation with a person directly impacted makes such a huge difference in humanizing our community and building support for equality,” said O’Connor. “It is literally a game-changer for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality, and you see that in the numbers.” Poll documentation can be found at www.eqca.org.

IL House’s Failure to Pass Marriage Called “Abject Betrayal” The Illinois General Assembly has ended its current session without passing SB10, which with the Governor’s signature, would have made Illinois the 13th state to enact equal marriage rights for LGBT people. “House Speaker Mike Madigan, the de facto leader of the Illinois Democratic Party, is responsible for this abject betrayal,” said Andy Thayer, long-time equal marriage rights activist and co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network. The Senate had previously passed the Bill and Governor Quinn had repeatedly pledged to sign it.
Sally Ride to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Barack Obama has announced he will award a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dr. Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut to travel to space. “We remember Sally Ride not just as a national hero, but as a role model to generations of young women,” the president said in a released statement. “Sally inspired us to reach for the stars, and she advocated for a greater focus on the science, technology, engineering and math that would help us get there.” Dr. Ride’s partner, mother, and sister were notified last week of the President’s decision to award her with the Nation’s highest civilian honor. The remainder of the honorees selected by the President will be announced over the coming weeks and the awards will be presented at a White House ceremony later this year.
BSA Lifts Ban On Gay Youth, Maintains Ban on Adult Leaders The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has approved a resolution that will lift the nationwide ban on gay youth, but will continue to deny gay parents and adults the opportunity to participate in the organization. The resolution will take effect on January 1, 2014. “Just a few hours ago, I was thinking that today could be my last day as a Boy Scout,” said Pascal Tessier, an openly gay 16-year-old Boy Scout from Maryland, who was told that he would not be able to earn his Eagle award unless the BSA changed their policy. “Obviously, for gay Scouts like me, this vote is life-changing. Like my brother before me, I now have a chance to earn my Eagle award — something that’s taken most of my life to achieve.”
Esurance Donating $100,000 To LGBT Charities
Esurance, the direct-to-consumer personal car insurance company, has kicked off its third annual charitable giving campaign, increasing its support to LGBT charities by donating a total of $100,000 to three very important causes: GLAAD, PFLAG, and The Trevor Project. Facebook friends and fans can steer Esurance’s donation to these organizations by visiting Esurance’s Facebook page, “Liking” Esurance, and voting for their favorite cause. Each organization will earn a percentage of the donation based on the number of votes they receive. The voting campaign will run through June 30. “As a company rooted in the principles of diversity and inclusion, Esurance recognizes the importance of raising awareness for LGBT issues,” said Esurance Vice President of Marketing Darren Howard. “We hope that LGBT supporters will cast a vote to help these three deserving causes make a difference in the community.” BRIEFLY PUT continues on page 16

Blue is the Warmest Color, centered on a lesbian relationship, gained prestige at the 66th Cannes Film Festival after winning the Festival’s highest honor, the Palme d’Or. The film contains the lengthiest, most intimate and most graphic lesbian sex scenes in mainstream cinema history, and is based on Julie Maroh’s graphic novel about two girls in a passionate, life-altering relationship. Kechiche had no intention of alluding to current politics, considering France legalized marriage equality earlier this month. “I didn’t want to make a militant film that had a message to deliver about homosexuality but of course it can be seen from that angle, and that doesn’t bother me,” Kechiche said in an interview with the Guardian.

ells Fargo & Company has become a founding corporate sponsor of the It Gets Better Project, joining in the social movement to end harassment against LGBT youth. In support of this effort, the company created its own It Gets Better video and booklet where senior leaders and team members from across the company share personal stories of overcoming adversity. Drinking and Tweeting with Sacramento’s Brandi Glanville
B
randi Glanville, one of the stars of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, was born and raised in Sacramento. Since then she has found fame as an international model and notoriety as the wife of TV star Eddie Cibrian, who infamously cheated on her with country music singer LeAnn Rimes.
Glanville has since divorced Cibrian and joined the cast of RHBH, where she has reclaimed her own power by becoming the New York Times’ Best Selling author of Drinking and Tweeting. Her selection as the Celebrity Grand Marshall of Sacramento’s Pride Parade brings her back to her hometown, and Outword was lucky enough to catch up with her for an interview. Are you excited to be a Grand Marshall at the Sacramento Gay Pride? OMG! I haven’t been more excited about anything in years! I grew up in Sacramento and my entire family still lives in suburbs of the area. I grew up with an entire family supporting gay rights, so this is ultra exciting for me. How does it feel to return to your hometown as a celebrity? I’ve always visited Sacramento over the past 17 years to see my family after living abroad. My family has always made me feel special when I visit home. I am not sure the word “celebrity” suits me. You write about gay men quite a bit 20

in your book. What is your connection to the gay community? I grew up with very liberal parents – my mom moved our gay neighbor into our home and onto our couch after his parents kicked him out of their home because of his sexuality. My gymnastics teacher of almost nine years was gay and very influential in my life. I also found myself as a young model living between San Fran and Sactown immersed in the gay community, spending many nights drinking and dancing at FACES nightclub with all my friends. Why do you think you are so popular with the gay community? I think I may be popular in the gay community because I live my life very outspoken, unapologetic and unafraid – I think I give a lot of people courage to just be who they were born to be without fear of what others may think. You went through a very public and messy divorce. Do you have any advice for gay people who are in the closet and afraid to come out? My advice to my friends that are afraid to come out because of what family or friends may think is simply that life is short and we only live once. For every minute we hide is one minute we are not fully embracing and enjoying life. Listen, not everyone is going to be able to deal with how you were born and all I have to say to that is who cares? Tell them to f*** off and enjoy the short time we have on this planet being true to yourself. Taking her own advice and not resting on her laurels, Glanville has a deal to write a second book to be published in early 2014, and the fourth season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will premiere in November 2013. Councilmember Hansen Sets Equality Goal for Sacramento by Charles Peer
A
recent “scorecard” released by the Human Rights Campaign gave the City of Sacramento a C+ on its 2012 Municipal Equality Index, a score that City Councilmember Steve Hansen is working hard to bring up to an A+. HRC’s Index rates cities across the nation on equality concerns, based both on Sexual Orientation, which would represent lesbians and gays, and on Gender Identity, which would represent transgenders. The index looks at whether the city has a Human/Rights Commission, pro-equality efforts, nondiscrimination laws, anti-bullying laws, recognizes domestic partners and other areas. Each city is then rated and given a score. Out of a possible 100 points, and 15 possible bonus points, Sacramento received a score of 79. Four California cities, San Francisco, Los Angeles,
we can,” he explained. “Additionally, depending on what happens with the Supreme Court cases, some of it might not be relevant. There are a few of the points in the report that we will have to figure out if it is going to cost money or not, but really, a lot of the points are like low hanging fruit, no pun intended, that I think we can really make a difference for people on.” Specifically, Hansen believes that points the City didn’t get, such as equivalent family leave, shouldn’t have been deducted because state and city law already provide for this. The City was also dinged nine points for not having a human

San Diego and Long Beach, received scores of 100. At the recent Stonewall Four Freedoms awards, where Hansen was presented the President’s Award, he announced a campaign to bring Sacramento into that elite circle, and recently sat down with Outword to discuss his goals and plans. “The easiest way to put it is that myself and some other councilmembers think that we can bring Sacramento to 100 percent on the new Municipal Equality Index the Human Rights Campaign came out with for the first time last November,” Hansen said in defining his goal. “There are some things that they didn’t quite get right and there is some work that we need to do.” Hansen is working with attorneys from the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), Stonewall Democrats, the Sacramento LGBT Center and some other groups, and fellow councilmember Jay Schenirer, Steve Cohn and Angelique Ashby. Hansen doesn’t see any opposition from other councilmembers, including Mayor Kevin Johnson. “I think that this is one of those things that we will have unanimity around,” he said. Hansen believes that some of the deducted points can easily be regained, or shouldn’t have been deducted to begin with. “A lot of it is frankly a no brainer, things that we could have done before, but for some reason we didn’t, but now 22

rights commission, but he noted that the City does have a joint powers authority with the Sacramento Regional Human Rights for Housing Commission that covers that area. Hansen feels that arguably, the City does provide some of the services to the LGBT community that it did not get credit for and is looking at what programming might be currently offered and not captured in the HRC scorecard. There are points under city leadership on LGBT equality that Hansen believes should also have been counted. “The City passed a lot of ordinances recognizing the LGBT community, including the Council acknowledging The LGBT community, sexual orientation and gender identity as a community of interest in redistricting, which was a pretty important thing, not to mention their support for marriage equality, and just recently I authored, along with Councilmember Kevin McCarty, an immigration resolution calling for immigration equality as well as a path to citizenship.” Hansen believes that those areas alone are about 11 points, which would bring the City up to 90 points pretty easily. “We just have to do some work, primarily around adding gender identity to our nondiscrimination policy. If we do that, there’s another seven points.”

Sac Pride Performer - Tyler Rich
L
ocal boy makes good is an appropriate way to describe the career path of Tyler Rich, who is garnering praise from critics and fans alike as he builds his musical career. Raised in a small Northern California farming community, it was a gift guitar from his grandmother that set him on his path to stardom. Tyler always loved listening to music and shortly after mastering the guitar he taught himself to play piano as well. It was a trip to Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium to catch Papa Roach and Linkin Park in concert that helped him make the decision that music was his destiny. After spending some time perfecting his craft and touring with local bands, Tyler decided to participate as a solo act in the “Jingle Ball Star Search” organized by Sacramento’s Top 40 radio station KDND 107.9 The End. He quickly rose to the top ten finalists, and decided strictly by votes cast from KDND listeners, he was selected as the winner. Since then he has been seen performing alongside artists such as Justin Bieber, Kris Allen from American Idol, Jason Derulo, Boys Like Girls, Donny and Marie Osmond, Andy Grammer, Cobra Starship, former 98 Degrees member Jeff Timmons, Taking Back
Sunday, Say Anything, Jason Reeves, Eric Hutchinson and many others — and that is a pretty impressive list! Tyler was featured in Real Weddings magazine for his performance at a wedding in Malibu, and he has performed at numerous charity events, including Ashton Kutcher’s “C.A.S.T” event in Hollywood, for Donny & Marie Osmond and the owners of Paul Mitchell’s Charity in Newport Beach. He is currently working with producer Warren Huart (Aerosmith, The Fray, Colbie Caillat and more) in Los Angeles for his next album, and is currently writing songs with producers Vidal & Dre (Usher, Chris Brown, Michael Jackson, and more) out of Philadelphia for Sony ATV music publishing. You can catch this rising young star on the stage at Sacramento Pride, and you can also learn more about him, and listen to some of his music at www.reverbnation.com/tylerrich or keep up with him at www.facebook.com/ TylerRichOfficial. From The Voice to Broadway, Frenchie Davis Has Earned Her Stardom
O
ne of the featured entertainers at this year’s Sacramento Pride will be the very talented Frenchie Davis. Her story is one of greatness threaded with many details. Though hard to summarize, the short version would be … Frenchie Davis.
Songbird Frenchie Davis was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Los Angeles, where she started her musical journey performing in plays throughout her school years, eventually deciding to audition for the second season of the groundbreaking FOX show American Idol. Her success on the show launched the Howard University alum’s rise to fame rather quickly, and she has been progressing ever since, moving on and up to join the Broadway cast of the hit show Rent and playing the role of Effie White in Dream Girls. Those roles led to four wonderful years on Broadway, and eventually becoming a Grammy nominated artist for her involvement in the revival of Ain’t Misbehavin. Frenchie appeared on the first season of NBC’s hit show The Voice and joined forces with Christina Aguilera to become one of the Top Finalists. Her cover of “When Love Takes Over” landed at #3 on the iTunes Dance Chart, launching her undeniable talent into the national spotlight yet again. She has now ventured out and established her own label called Frenchie Davis Music Group. She teamed up with international singer/ songwriter Janice Robinson (Ashley Tisdale, Deborah Cox) to record her first smash single “Love’s Got A Hold on Me,” produced 28

An epic Mad Max style video directed by Ch’an Andre and Brian Friedman (Britney Spears, X-Factor and So You Think You Can Dance) will accompany this incredible single. “Love’s Got A Hold on Me” will also feature remixes by Dave Aude, Laszlo, Itay Kalderon, KlubJumpers, Rafael M., DJ Tony Marinos, DJ Asha and many more. The songbird also plans to release a Christmas song and is in talks to develop a plus-size lingerie line. With a career most people only dream about, a loyal fan base that increases every day, and a passionate love for life, Frenchie is a beacon of positivity wherever she goes. “I want to live my life to inspire people to be brave and courageous,” says Frenchie, “to believe in themselves and never take no for answer.” Find out even more about Frenchie and what her future plans are at www. frenchiedavis.org, and be sure to catch her live performance at Sacramento Pride on Saturday, June 15. Kevin Mikal Will Have You Dancing in the Street at Pride
B
orn and raised in the California sunshine, Kevin Mikal is a rising sensation on the gay pop scene, serving you risqué lyrics, with a powerful voice and danceable beats. Kevin Mikal.
Recent performances at Great America’s Pride Night, Ruby Skye, The Crib and The Café have earned him praise from both critics and fans. We took a moment to catch up with Kevin, who is proud to be one of the headlining performers for Sacramento Pride 2013. Kevin, How would you describe your music to people who haven’t heard you yet? I’d call it Electronic Dance Music with a Pop twist. My new EP Candy Yum Yum is fresh, upbeat, and high-energy. The lyrics hit hard, the beats are driving, and the dirty bass makes you want to get up and dance! I like to write lyrics that use lots of metaphors and imagery. Let me translate a few examples: “You play the game like musical chairs” — you’re a cheater and you’re BUSTED! “Bubble gum on my red bottom Loub lace ups” — I like nice things, but I shouldn’t have them because I can be a hot mess. “Servin’ you cake but we ain’t at a bake shop” — I’m serving you big booty realness, and I just love cake … What can people expect to see at your live performance? Sassy choreography, bright neon colors, and 30

hot dancers doing lots of booty shaking. Kevin Mikal and The Yum Yum Boys are always bringing the party! How do you write your songs? Honestly, a lot of my material gets written in the car, singing into the voice memo app on my iPhone, or writing lyrics on the treadmill at the gym. It’s when I’m forced to focus and stay in one place that the lyrics and melodies just come to me. What makes you laugh? Chelsea Handler, RuPaul’s witty remarks on the Drag Race judging panel, Jonathan from Gay of Thrones, and Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank from Strangers with Candy. What are some things you can’t live without? Instagram filters, Starbucks, sugar and love. What’s next for you? We are planning a pride tour and an AMAZING music video for my new song “Candy Yum Yum!” We are currently searching for “Yum Yum Boys” to GoGo in the video so if you think you have what it takes you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Vine@ KEVINMIKAL. outwordmagazine.com
Understanding and Helping a Transgendered Toddler

ottie and Kathy could never have imagined hearing their four-year-old son say, “Rainbows are different, snowflakes are different, cars are different and I am different. I am a girl!”

Shortly after completing foster and adoption certification through Sierra Forever Families, a local nonprofit with a mission to transform the lives of children in foster care, Dottie and Kathy were matched with Jacob, a three-week-old baby boy. Two years later, they adopted 10-month-old boy and girl twins. Children begin to realize their gender between three and five years old — this was no exception for Jacob, who gravitated exclusively toward feminine things. When he grew from his toddler bed, he wanted Tinkerbell décor, not the earth tones and safari animals he got. In the middle of the night, he would put
Dottie and Kathy consulted with national gender experts at the Child and Adolescent Gender Center Clinic in San Francisco. After several evaluations, Jacob was diagnosed transgendered — having male anatomy, but the mind of a girl. It was recommended Jacob transition into Kelly, a female. Transgendered identity is not a result of environmental factors, parenting style or family structure. “It took courage. We had to acknowledge our fears as parents,” recalled Kathy. Kelly adapted to the transition immediately. Being able to express herself as the girl she felt inside, her anxious

He began to stutter, bite his finger nails, chew his shirts and wet his pants. He even requested a shot in his “pee pee” to make it go away. Dottie is a psychologist and Kathy is a behavior specialist, yet neither have experienced such issues. They began to log Jacob’s behaviors, research gender identity and locate experts. Then, Jacob made a profound request: “Why did you name me Jacob? Can you call me Kelly, because that’s a girl’s name?”
behaviors and nightmares soon faded. “The alternative of denying who she is puts her at high-risk for depression, anxiety, suicide, sexual acting out and substance abuse. This is not an option,” said Dottie. Today, Kelly lives, and is known, fulltime as a girl. She is social, is doing great in kindergarten and enjoys the Tinkerbell room she originally desired. Queer Music For Pride from Three Gay-Friendly Artists by Chris Narloch
I
am not overly fond of labels such as “queer music” because I like to think that good music is good music, whether created by somebody gay, straight or somewhere in between. I do, however, look forward every June to the release of music aimed at the gay community in celebration of Gay Pride Month. Here then are reviews of two brand new, gay-friendly CDs and one spectacular single from 2012 that I can’t seem to get out of my head.
Levi Kreis
Levi Kreis Imagine Paradise
Levi Kreis has been keeping a low profile since he won a well-deserved Tony in 2010 as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for originating the role of rocker Jerry Lee Lewis in the Broadway blockbuster Million Dollar Quartet. It turns out the crafty singer-songwriter has been busy producing his sixth album, a fan-funded affair two years in the making. Featuring 12 songs that are personalized, custom-written theme songs inspired by some of Levi’s most generous backers, Imagine Paradise will be available this June 20. Perfectly timed for Pride Month, Kreis’ latest CD celebrates the ‘70s, when r&b and dance music emerged from the black and gay communities as vital anthems of freedom. The 31-year old Southern singer’s voice is
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Same Love
as lovely as ever, and key tracks on Imagine Paradise include the eminently danceable advance single “So Much Better,” “Love Revolution” featuring QBoy, and the gorgeous breakup ballad, “The One Who Matters Most.”
Sylvester Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits
Fans of dance music generally concur that electronic music reached its creative peak during the pop history period know as the “disco era,” in the mid to late ‘70s, when artists such as Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder (Donna Summer’s producer) were putting out groundbreaking new recordings. The openly gay, cross-dressing artist known as Sylvester was a part of that heady period, and he produced such iconic dance tracks as “Dance (Disco Heat),” “Do You Wanna Funk” and “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” Unfortunately, “Do You Wanna Funk” is not included on this new greatest hits collection, but what is here is a superb

survey of what made Sylvester great, and the CD features an excellent new remix of “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by the Grammy-nominated DJ, Ralph Rosario. The new release also includes a number of original album tracks and 12” mixes that are rare or no longer available on CD, and the 11-track album can be purchased as a regular CD or on double pink vinyl. As a side note, if you purchase this CD, you will be giving back to the gay community since Sylvester, who died in 1988 from AIDS, bequeathed royalties from the sale of his music in perpetuity to benefit two charitable organizations in the Bay Area: the AIDS Emergency Fund and Project Open Hand.

Just when I thought I had closed my mind and heart to the (mostly) corporate crap that passes for rap and hip-hop music nowadays, progressive artists such as Frank Ocean and this enormously successful duo have arrived on the charts to change my mind. If you have listened to the radio at all in the last six months, you could not have missed hearing Macklemore & Lewis, a talented duo consisting of producer Ryan Lewis and rapper/musician Ben Haggerty, better known by his stage name Macklemore. Hip-hop fans who bought their hugely popular CD The Heist for its monster hit “Thrift Shop” may have been surprised to also find among its tracks this incredibly moving plea for tolerance of the LGBT community. Anchored by a beautifully written and performed rap by Macklemore and featuring a soulful vocal by Mary Lambert, “Same Love” is a stunning piece of pop music that advocates for acceptance of same-sex love and marriage equality. Although the vibe is less confrontational, “Same Love” is no less passionate and political than the classic recordings created back in the day by my still-favorite rap group, Public Enemy. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis should be applauded for advancing the cause of gay rights, and if you haven’t seen the dynamite video for “Same Love” check it out on YouTube.

Former Sacramentan Mackenzie Claude Is Living a Model Life by Chris Narloch
M
ackenzie Claude spent years in the foster care system in Sacramento before following his dream of becoming a model. That dream has most recently taken him to Las Vegas where, between his modeling career and TV work, he is building a life with the two men he loves.
Claude, who is only 27, has found success in his personal life and also in his modeling career, which has taken him to television and a recent stint on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Outword spoke with Claude recently about his unconventional career and love life and about his journey from Sacramento to Sin City. What was it like working with RuPaul? Had you ever done drag before, for Halloween or anything? RuPaul’s Drag Race was the first time I had ever done drag. First time putting on heels, wearing a dress and trying on a wig. You know, there were not too many opportunities like that when I was with the U.S. Armed Services. RuPaul was great, and she looks as good in person as she does on camera. You had a hard time walking in the heels at first. Did you ever get used to that, and what has the reaction been like after you were on Drag Race? I was presented with two challenges right from the start of the episode; the first was learning to walk in heels and the second was feminizing my walk. After all, the Marines lead with their shoulders, but drag queens lead with their hips. So what everyone saw on TV was the combination of me walking in heels for the very first time and attempting to lead with my hips. Luckily I figured it out in time for the catwalk. The reaction to the episode has been incredible. People have sent fan mail, I’ve been recognized at work, and artist Chad Sell even created a comic of my drag partner, Alaska, and me. What was it like being gay and serving with the Marines? Would you do it again? I have always been very comfortable and confident with the fact that I am a gay man. I guess that comes partly with being on my own, in that I have never had to answer to anybody. However, when I enlisted with the U.S. military I did go into the closet. I knew about DADT, and I had heard stories. So in order to protect myself, and my potential career, I stayed in the closet for about two years. What I learned in those two years was that the Marines in my unit didn’t give outwordmagazine.com
a damn if I was gay or not. What mattered to them was if I was good at my job or not, and I was a damned good Medic. I spent a total of six years and three deployments with the Marines taking us to Uganda, Morocco and South Africa. I would definitely do it all over again. What I got out of it were the resources and the foundation I needed to live my life and pursue my dreams. How did you go from being in the military to a modeling career, and what was it like the first time you saw your face on a billboard or magazine cover? I always wanted to be a model and the military helped me build a foundation to pursue that dream. Having that dream become a reality with getting signed, getting my first magazine cover and seeing myself on a billboard — it was an indescribable feeling. Even better than those accomplishments though, was falling in love during the process. Do you really have two partners? Tell me about that. Do the three of you live together? Yes, I really do have two partners. One of them has been on the cover of your magazine. (Mackenzie’s partners are celebrity artist Nick San Pedro and Britney Spears impersonator Derrick Barry, who was on Outword’s March 12, 2009 cover.) They have been together for six years, and the three of us have been together for over a year. We are in a committed trinogamous relationship. We are a team, have each other’s backs and share the same king size bed. Is Mackenzie Claude your real name? Mackenzie Claude is my real first and middle name, but my friends know me as Mack. Was it scarier being closeted in the military or in the foster care system? What encouragement would you give to anyone reading this who may be struggling through that same experience? Both can be equally intimidating. To anybody going through something similar I say, “Stay true to who you are and you will persevere.”

n this season of Pride 2013, it’s easy for those of us fortunate to live in a progressive community to feel the fight for equality and acceptance is won. Of course, it only takes a visit to the Midwest, a glance at the headlines, or a look at our history, to remind us that much work remains. A part of that history is captured by author Ann Bannon, who wrote the stories of a generation before Stonewall. And although times have changed, the human yearning, fears and struggles encompassed in her stories still resonate with audiences today. When Bannon first put pen to paper in the early 1950s, she was a young, suburban housewife looking for a creative outlet and hoping to earn a little money on the side. She stumbled into what turned out to be a highly marketable genre — lesbian pulp fiction — almost by accident. The first manuscript she showed to a publisher, via her friendship with lesbian author Vin Packer, was a coming-of-age story featuring a cast of characters loosely
famous character, a glamorous, tough-butlovable butch lesbian, came to life, in a series of five more books that would come to be known as the Beebo Brinker chronicles. While Beebo and the series’ other characters seem rigidly stereotyped today, they mirrored the pre-Stonewall LGBT community. “There were no gay or lesbian people on TV, no one in the movies, no community centers, no support groups,” she says. “There were a few organizations — Daughters of Bilitis and Mattachine Society for the men. There were a few publications like The Ladder for women, One for men. But you had to be so cautious about sending material in plain brown wrappers, literally. People’s lives could be ruined, jobs lost. It was very

modeled on Bannon’s recent experiences as a college sorority girl. The publisher, who specialized in pulp fiction, quickly zoomed in on the star-crossed love story of two coeds, whose forbidden lust and doomed relationship made for a steamy tale that appealed to both women who saw their own forbidden desires reflected in it, and straight men turned on by the girl-ongirl sex. After a rewrite, the book, Odd Girl Out, was a success. “It never entered my mind that I was writing ‘sleaze,’” Bannon would later recall. “I was writing a romantic story of women in love.” Following the success of her first book, Bannon’s lovelorn protagonist landed in New York’s Greenwich Village, then the locus of the burgeoning Beat movement and ground zero for all things bohemian and exotic. Bannon found it equally alluring, stealing time away from her conventional married life to tour the gay and lesbian scene there. “Talk about Dorothy arriving in Munchkin Land,” she says. It was in the Village that Bannon’s most 52

frightening.” Women coming out as lesbians were type-cast as either butch or femme. “You were instantly shunted into one or the other role.” Bannon’s own life was 180 degrees removed from that of her fictional characters. “My husband was a nice man, but of course he wasn’t very happy about letting me go [to visit Greenwich Village],” she says. “While he never read any of my books, he kind of picked up the idea. But he reconciled himself to it when the royalty checks started coming in.” After about 1962, Bannon’s occasional visits to the Village ended, sacrificed to the exigencies of raising two daughters and keeping the marriage intact. She would not return for some 40 years, to a very different scene. “I can only think of it as my dream place,” she says. “At the same time, there was a real melancholy because I had made the choice to marry, like almost everybody of my generation.” PULP continues on page 57 outwordmagazine.com

enry Cavill looks to be the sexiest Superman yet, at least judging by the trailers for Man of Steel, the Zack Snyderdirected and Christopher Nolan-produced reboot of the famous franchise.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert Coming to Sacramento
Cavill’s clingy costume definitely flatters his chiseled physique, and if his character has had a run-in with kryptonite you wouldn’t know it from those rock-hard, six-pack abs. Man of Steel boasts an all-star cast that includes Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Christopher Meloni and Laurence Fishburne. The epic, nearly two-and-a-half hour film will be the next big screen blockbuster to open simultaneously in regular theaters and IMAX, beginning at midnight on Thursday, June 13. Get set for a magical ride as in this outrageously fun show that tells the uplifting story of a trio of friends, on a road trip of a lifetime, who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship in the middle of the Australian outback and end up finding more than they could ever have dreamed. Hansen continued from page 22 Sacramento’s original non-discrimination policy did not include transgenders, and Hansen believes the reason for that is that the City was ahead of the times. “I think we did those things in the ‘80s or early 90s,” he said. “At that time people probably just weren’t as aware as we are now. I think it is just a matter of the community, or somebody like me, coming forward and saying let’s embrace this and help lead that charge.” Hansen believes that will be one of his foremost goals. “Updating our statutes to reflect that there is no discrimination related to gender identity,” he said was an important goal. “We don’t have any cases where people have said that’s an issue, but I think having the law in place is really important. “I think we should have a very frank discussion about covering health benefits for transgender employees. I don’t know that we have very many transgender employees, because nobody has really had the conversation, but we should look and see what the opportunity is there and if we can get it done, I think we should include that as well.” Hansen said that Shannon Mintor and Jeff Kors from the National Center for Lesbian Rights have been really great in helping, and that the city has had a meeting with leaders from the LGBT community, particularly from Stonewall, the Gender Health Center, the Sacramento LGBT Center, SacLegal and some of the other groups that are interested in this to see how they can build a coalition to get this done. The next part of the process will be to see
how this will affect the city financially. “This will impact us probably more around the health benefits side and offsetting for the tax discrimination that happens because of the federal DOMA,” Hansen said. “Depending on what the Supreme Court does, we will have a much clearer idea of what we need to do.” Noting that the City legislative process doesn’t move terribly fast, Hansen said the process for implementing these changes is already underway. “We put it on the city’s Law and Legislation Log of Follow-up the last week of May, so this is on the agenda already and I would guess that within the next couple of months we will have a plan together and some draft ordinances that would then move through the Law and Legislation committee before coming to the Council, and so I would guess by the fall we will have some progress,” he said. Councilmember Hansen would love to get your input on these issues, and you can reach him at shansen@cityofsacramento.org or his office at 916-808-7004. Be sure to also look for him at the Sacramento Pride Parade where he will be a Grand Marshall. “We’re going to be on a restored firetruck, and I am inviting city employees to join in the Pride Parade as a contingent,” he said. “I’m really excited about it.” Hansen said that by Sacramento stepping out and taking the Municipal Equality Index as a charge gives the City an opportunity to trumpet the good things that we have and what a wonderful community we have. “We have a very vibrant and active LGBT community here, and I think we should be encouraging people to come see what we have to offer.”

Claude continued from page 49 Do you have good memories of Sacramento? Where did you hang out? I love Mackramento. In fact the hardest part about leaving to pursue my dreams was saying goodbye to my friends. We spent lots of time and money hanging out at FACES, Badlands, the Depot and the Merc. When we weren’t there, we would be at Social, D30, Dive Bar or The Park. Sacramento has a great night life, great people and a lot of my best memories were made there. You currently live in Las Vegas, which is like another planet to those of us who have only
vacationed there. What’s it like to live there full-time? I moved to Sin City and fell in love. It’s an unconventional city, but I have had an unconventional life so for me it’s a perfect fit. Bright lights, casinos, open 24/7, Chippendales, nightclubs and drag queens. What’s not to love? What’s next for you? I will be on your TV’s again this fall on a weekly basis as a part of a major network reality show. For now, you can check me out at MackenzieClaude.com.
Pulp continued from page 52 After six books, she stopped writing. Daughters grew up, the marriage ended. Bannon returned to college and got a teaching credential and ultimately a Ph.D. She spent the 1960s and 1970s building an academic career, eventually becoming an associate dean at Sacramento State University. Ann Bannon, the writer, had ceased to exist. For a time she thought the Beebo Chronicles had died away as well. But they kept resurfacing, and continued to do so each decade, often in different forms. In the early 1980s Naiad Press bought rights to publish five of the books. “They really brought Beebo back to life,” Bannon says. The series’ original cover art was featured in Jaye Zimet’s 1999 book, Strange Sisters: The Art of Lesbian Pulp Fiction. Playwrights Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman featured the novels in their

off-Broadway play, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, which debuted in 2007. Cleis Press of San Francisco currently publishes the books, still available in LGBT or alternative bookstores. And Bannon, who resides in Sacramento, still travels to book fairs and university symposiums all over the country to speak about LGBT history and her timeless tales. “There is still a lot of interest, to look at the books as maybe a socially historical journey, and at the way in which life hasn’t changed that much,” she says. “Human nature hasn’t changed all that much in the last century. They still have appeal as lively books, and the feelings and fears and hopes in them are still very much the same.” For more about Ann Bannon and Beebo Brinker and friends, visit annbannon.com.
