Give Big on the Big Day of Giving
M
ake a big difference and help the causes you love by participating in the Big Day of Giving. On Thursday, May 2, donors can support their favorite charitable cause in the Sacramento region: 601 organizations will use this opportunity to boost their fundraising campaigns. The Big Day of Giving is more than a once-annual 24-hour giving challenge. It’s the culmination of an entire year’s worth of community-building and collaboration that connects non-profits to the community at-large and to each other. Since 2013, this effort has raised more than $30 million! “We will come together again to send an unmistakable message of support to those organizations that help the Sacramento region flourish by making our
neighborhoods vibrant, empowering our young people, protecting our most vulnerable populations, preserving our natural spaces, and so much more,” said Linda Beech Cutler, chief executive of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, which organizes Big Day of Giving. Donors who wish to plan their giving in advance of May 2 can visit www. bigdayofgiving.org. For a complete list of partners, visit www.bigdayofgiving.org/partners.

The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is opening a 12-bed facility in midtown Sacramento at 21st and P Street for transitional-aged youth between the ages of 18 – 24 years old. Individuals can stay at the shelter for up to 90 days while receiving clothing, food, and transportation along with access to crucial services designed to help provide stability. Studies have shown 40 percent of youth experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+. Since 2018, the Center has operated a 6-bed Transitional Living Program which supports youth to stay up to 24-months. Grants from the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), funding by the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) and matching funds from the City of Sacramento and private LGBT Center donors are making the new shelter and programs possible. Anyone interested in partnership or support for youth experiencing homelessness through these new initiatives can contact the Center at (916) 442-0185 or visit www.saccenter.org.

Drag Queen Bingo Hits Milestone
O
n Thursday, May 2, Drag Queen Bingo, the monthly charity fundraising event produced by the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, will surpass $250,000 raised for local non-profit organizations. Marking the milestone will be a reunion of drag personalities Rusty Nails and Felicity Diamond, who put the “drag” in Drag Queen Bingo when it launched in 2009, and current Mistress of Ceremonies DoMe Moore, aka Chamber board member Paul Crouch. Also, a halftime show will feature several Chamber board members and local business leaders performing as drag queens and kings.
Drag Queen Bingo fundraiser for the Sac. Valley Vets, circa 2013.
Proceeds from the event, part of the Rainbow Chamber Foundation’s 2019 Big Day Of Giving campaign, will support the Foundation’s scholarship program for LGBTQ and allied students and provide funding for local organizations that provide LGBTQA youth services. Drag Queen Bingo supports a different 501(c)(3) non-profit organization each month, and local organizations that have benefited include the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Davis Pride, WEAVE, Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus, West Sacramento Historical Society, Sac State Pride Center, PFLAG, Gender Health Center, River City Food Bank, Front Street Animal Shelter, and many more. The cost to play Bingo is $20, which gets you everything you need for eight Bingo games, including Bingo cards, daubers and a cheat sheet for rowdy call-backs, such as G-54: “Ooh ooh, the Disco G!” and B-11: “Legs to Heaven.” Admission to the game goes on sale at 6:30 p.m. at the venue. Cash only, please. For this one-night special event only, guests can take advantage of a $50 VIP package, which includes everything you need for eight games of Bingo, reserved seating, and a souvenir Drag Queen Bingo T-shirt. To purchase VIP tickets online in advance of the event, visit https://business. rainbowchamber.com/events/calendar/. For those who do not purchase VIP tickets, organizers recommend arriving early, as the event is expected to sell out. Sacramento’s iteration of Drag Queen Bingo was launched in August 2009 by Fred Palmer, publisher and CEO of outwordmagazine.com
Outword Media Marketing Events and Outword staffers Ron Tackitt and Charlie Peer, with original Mistresses of Ceremonies Rusty Nails and Felicity Diamond, joined more recently by DoMe Moore. Nails and Diamond retired from emceeing the event in 2016. In August 2015, after Drag Queen Bingo had raised more than $100,000 for local organizations, Palmer passed the torch to the board of the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, which has continued producing the monthly event, coordinated by Chamber members Paul Villaluz Weubbe, R. Paul Villaluz Weubbe and Richard Hernandez, with assistance from Chamber volunteers. Held the first Thursday of each month, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Mango’s, 1930 K Street in Sacramento, Drag Queen Bingo features prizes for every Bingo, including theater tickets and souvenir packages donated by Broadway Sacramento. In addition to proceeds from the game, beneficiary organizations are invited to promote their services and fundraise during the event intermission. For more information about Drag Queen Bingo or becoming a beneficiary, contact info@rainbowchamber.com. The Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce is a regional chamber serving LGBT business owners and professionals across the Sacramento Valley, as well as straight allies who support its mission of fostering a prosperous, diverse and inclusive business climate. American Bar Calls Out Discrimination Against LGBTQ Parents
M
by Rich Vaughn
any LGBT intended parents and their families rejoiced in 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court, in Obergefell v. Hodges, legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Finally, LGBT married couples would be treated the same as heterosexual married couples in the areas of parentage and parental rights. Instead, some states resisted the decision, and, nearly four years later, several have enacted new laws restricting the rights of LGBT people to parent. In response, in February 2019, the American Bar Association passed Resolution 113, which “opposes laws, regulations, and rules or practices that discriminate against LGBT individuals in the exercise of the fundamental right to parent.”

A report accompanying the resolution confirms that “lawmakers in some states have incorrectly argued that there is ambiguity in the breadth of Obergefell’s holding that still permits discrimination against LGBT individuals.” Any purported ambiguity supporting these policies does not exist. The Supreme Court’s decision last year in Pavan v. Smith, 137 S. Ct. 2075 (2017), made clear that rights afforded to different-sex parents by the state cannot be denied to LGBT parents…. However, family law in each state continues to vary greatly. Some states have fully embraced the parental rights of LGBT parents, while other states are more reticent, forcing their courts to recognize rights for LGBT parents on an ad hoc basis. In Pavan v. Smith the Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the state’s right to discriminate by refusing to list both married lesbian moms, who conceived via assisted reproduction, on their baby’s birth certificate, instead listing only the biologically related mother. That omission constituted unequal treatment, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2017, because heterosexual couples in Arkansas who conceived using assisted reproduction were required by law to list the husband as “father” on the child’s birth certificate. The high court’s verdict: States must issue birth certificates including the female spouses of women who give birth in the state if they include male spouses of women who give birth. Also since 2015, a growing number of states have passed laws making it more difficult for LGBTQ people to adopt or

foster. Of 10 states that have laws allowing state-licensed adoption or foster agencies to refuse to place children with LGBT individuals or couples due to religious objections, eight have passed these discriminatory laws since 2015. The main take-away for LGBTQ people who hope to be parents someday is to be aware that the laws governing parentage differ widely from state to state and to consult experienced legal counsel familiar with the laws in the state where your baby will be born, or where you adopt or foster, and in the state where your family will ultimately live. For non-biological parents, a second-parent adoption, where possible, is still the best way to ensure your parental rights and your family are protected, whether you are at home or away. For the time being, advocates for equality and reproductive freedom are in “defense” mode, as some states resist advances to reproductive freedom and fight to strip rights from LGBT people. The ABA’s resolution is an encouraging signal that the mainstream U.S. legal community is behind us as we continue the work to ensure permanent and equal legal protection for ALL families. Attorney Rich Vaughn is founder and principal of International Fertility Law Group, one of the world’s largest and best-known law firms focused exclusively on assisted reproductive technology, a highly regarded speaker and writer, and an activist for reproductive freedom and LGBTQ equality. He and husband Tommy Woelfel reside in Southern California with their twin sons conceived via assisted reproduction. Celebrating Our 16th Stonewall
F
ifty years ago, members of the LGBTQ community peacefully congregating at the Stonewall Inn got fed up with the constant harassment by police and responded in kind. It was a pivotal moment for the community as the frustration and pain finally boiled over. Now, 50 years later, we honor those that stood for our community and fought for equal rights and protections when many believed that goal was merely a fantasy. Celebrating our 16th Stonewall Democratic Club Gala, we are highlighting how far we have come, and how much is left to do in the fight for equality. Our annual Four Freedoms Awards dinner will be held Wednesday May 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the Tsakolpolous Galleria in downtown Sacramento. In years past we have honored great LGBTQ leaders like Senator Galgiani, Dennis Mengers, President pro Tempore Toni Atkins, and many more. This year, our awardees include Evan Low (Former Chair, LGBTQ Caucus), Jeff Freitas (President, California Federation of Teachers), Mandy Lee (Former President, Equality California), and one of Sacramento’s strongest advocates for the trans community: Ebony Harper. We are excited to look back at the trials and suffering we’ve endured, as we cannot appreciate where we are without honoring those who paved the road. It’s going to be a great night! Named after Roosevelt’s famous speech to Congress in 1941, President Roosevelt insisted that people in all nations of the
outwordmagazine.com
world shared Americans’ entitlement to four freedoms: the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom to worship in their own way, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Every year we identify four members of the community, or allies, that exemplify these tenants. This year, we are not giving out specific awards (such as free
from want) but acknowledging that times have changed and many we recognize now are fulfilling multiple components of that speech. We look forward to sharing with attendees how each awardee represents the Four Freedoms we cherish. Early bird tickets are still on sale for $100. Sonoma County’s Russian River is Open for Business!

fter cleaning up from the recent overabundance of water, Guerneville visitors are welcomed back with special deals and fun events by local merchants and lodging properties. Most businesses never closed or have already re-opened, and others will re-open with a new look and feel sometime in May. This vital LGBTQ and straight-friendly community is resilient and it’s not the first (nor the last) time that businesses will be doing spring remodeling after a water event. Very few Main Street restaurants and merchants were affected by the recent rains. Now that the sun is out, there are many reasons to return to the River: food and wine tasting, hiking in Armstrong Woods amongst the Redwoods (yes! the creek has water in it), shopping on Main Street or in Duncan’s Mills (no water damage at all). Support the community by booking a weekend (or week) getaway and help the business community recover. 4th Annual Wine & Food Spring Fling is a showcase of locally produced food and wine in the heart of the Russian River Valley featuring the best in food and wine with small bites and wine tastings from gourmet purveyors. Spend the afternoon outdoors on Guerneville’s tree-lined Main Street enjoying music from the THUGS, one of Sonoma County’s most popular local bands. Local celebrity chefs Crista Luedtke and Michelle Anna Jordan will be there along with 13 local wineries. Several participating

Currently, 11 restaurants and gourmet food purveyors will be offering small tastes of their delicious food. The Wine & Food Spring Fling will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. and is hosted by the Russian River Chamber of Commerce. Tickets and more information are available online at www.RussianRiver. com. Our Next President & His “First Dude”
O
by Chris Narloch
n April 14, 2019, Pete Buttigieg (pronounced “Boot Edge Edge”), who has been the mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012, formally announced that he is seeking the Democratic nomination for president of the United States in 2020. If elected, he would be the first openly gay American president as well as the youngest ever.
Like many people, I thought the “gay mayor” from Indiana running for president was a gag (or an attention grab) until I started reading about Buttigieg and caught his poised appearances with the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Stephen Colbert on their talk shows. Evangelical Christians and secular homophobes might disagree, but Buttigieg, it turns out, is extremely presidential in every way that matters -- far more so than the current resident of the White House, who I prefer to call “The Pussy Grabber.” Pete Buttigieg is a devout Christian (take that, Mike Pence!) who was raised in Catholic schools and is now a regular church-going Episcopalian. Unlike Donald Trump, who has been known to insult the U.S. military, the “gay mayor” actually served his country. (Buttigieg is a former naval intelligence officer who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 for seven months.) A 37-year-old native of South Bend, Buttigieg graduated from Harvard, was also a Rhodes Scholar, and speaks half a dozen languages. He returned to his hometown and eventually became its mayor, successfully restoring the city’s parks and significantly spurring economic growth and business development in South Bend. His presidential platform is as impressive as the rest of his resume. Buttigieg supports universal healthcare and universal background checks for firearm purchases, is

for federal legislation that would ban job discrimination against LGBT people, and wants to preserve DACA and overturn Citizens United. It also doesn’t hurt (except, I guess, with homophobes) that Buttigieg has a super-cute husband, Chasten Glezman, a junior high school teacher, who he married in June of 2018 at the Cathedral of St. James, in downtown South Bend, where he is a congregant. Peter and Chas – as I like to call them – met on the dating app, Hinge, and Mr. Glezman can out-tweet Donald Trump. A social media master, Chas would make an ideal husband to the President, and so I have taken to calling him the “First Dude” because I believe in the power of visualizing and manifesting the future. Until I researched Pete and Chas, I thought there was no way in hell that a gay man could be elected president in the era of Donald “White Trash with Money” Trump, but I have since changed my mind. Having survived Anita Bryant’s gaybashing reign of terror in the ‘70s, I never thought I would live to see gay marriage become legal in the United States, but that April 25, 2019 - May 9, 2019 • No. 623
has come to pass. I certainly never believed that “The Terminator” would become the (former) governor of California, or that a reality TV star from “The Apprentice” could be president of the United States. Anything it seems can happen in this crazy political climate, and a recent poll out of Iowa had Pete Buttigieg in third place among Democratic contenders, behind Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden -who still hadn’t officially announced his candidacy as I wrote this piece. Just think how horrifying and humiliating it would be for Pence and Trump to lose the election to a gay guy. Wouldn’t that be divine retribution for their homophobic and transphobic policies? Buttigieg almost looks too good to be true, but I want to believe that there are no scandals or skeletons in his closet that could derail his chances. The “gay mayor” has my vote, if for no other reason than he and his husband are excellent role models for other LGBT folks and really for anyone, regardless of your sexual orientation. An apparent poster couple for civility, intelligence and class, Pete and Chas now live in the same South Bend neighborhood where Buttigieg grew up, with their two rescue dogs, Truman and Buddy. C’mon. What’s not to like? outwordmagazine.com

Film Noir At Tower & Avengers In IMAX
by Chris Narloch
C
inematic superhero supporters and fans of film noir will have plenty to be happy about in May, as the Avengers take over IMAX screens and black-and-white classics come to the Tower.
Thor returns for “Avengers: Endgame.”
Avengers: Endgame There were no press screenings of this film before our deadline, but I will definitely be heading over to Sacramento’s IMAX after the new “Avengers” movie opens on April 25, to see how Marvel Studios concludes this monstrously successful superhero saga. Let’s hope the filmmakers can build on the prior movie’s intriguing ending. Lord knows there should be no shortage of butt-kicking action since the film’s run time is reportedly clocking in at a hefty 182 minutes. The only way to properly experience “Avengers: Endgame” is to see it in IMAX 3D and have your hair blown back by the amazing sound system and the gigantic screen at the Esquire IMAX on K Street. For more information, visit https://www.imax.com/imax-esquire-oo. Film Noir At Tower Sacramento’s historic Tower Theatre is the place to be during the month of May, as that Broadway landmark screens a classic film noir each Wednesday evening. First up is a showing of “Gun Crazy” on May 1, which includes a post-screening Q&A with Eddie Muller, a film noir expert from Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Subsequent titles being shown in May are “Mildred Pierce” with Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon,” “Double Indemnity” starring Barbara Stanwyck, and Orson Welles in “The Lady from Shanghai.” Go to https://www.readingcinemasus.com/tower/showtimes-and-tickets/special-screen/ film-noir/advance-tickets.

A Trio Of Sensitive SingerSongwriter Studs
T
by Chris Narloch
he recent enormous popularity of Ed Sheeran, the flamehaired hit-maker who hails from the UK, has ushered in a wave of young male artists who wear their hearts on their sleeves. Here are reviews of new CDs from three such singers, who I’m sure would love to duplicate Sheeran’s success. Ben Platt – Sing To Me Instead This 25-year-old singersongwriter won a well-deserved Tony Award for his remarkable lead performance in the original cast of the Broadway blockbuster “Dear Evan Hansen.” I saw Platt on Broadway (and was blown away by him) so perhaps my hopes were too high for this CD, but I have to say that I was disappointed by the singer’s occasionally cheesy lyrics and his frequent over-singing on his debut pop album. There are a number of fine songs on “Sing To Me Instead,” such as “Hurt Me Once” and “Grow As We Go,” but when Platt ratchets up the emotion, as on “Honest Man” and “Older,” the less-than-subtle results can be painfully overwrought. Hopefully, the singer will realize that sometimes less is more, and he will rein it in a bit, next time out.
Ben Platt
Dermot Kennedy – Dermot Kennedy This handsome, 27-year-old Irish folk-rocker has a slight rasp in his voice that makes him even sexier, and he uses it to great effect on this self-titled disc’s twelve tasty tracks. “Power Over Me,” Kennedy’s recent single and the first cut on the CD, is deliriously addictive -- at least to my ears -- and other soulful selections such as “Glory” and “Moments Passed” are equally successful. Dermot Kennedy is an artist to watch, and this passionate record is by far my favorite among the three albums in this article. Dean Lewis – A Place We Knew This 31-year-old Aussie singer scored a tearjerker hit with “Be Alright,” a bittersweet ballad about leaning on friends to get you through a breakup. I especially like the way Lewis’ accent doesn’t disappear when he sings. The singer’s lyrics feel passionate and personal, and Lewis wisely includes several up-tempo tracks that keep the CD from being a bummer. When you are as talented as this artist is, a little heartbreak goes a long way.

Storm Large
Any show with a parental advisory is my kind of night, and so the warning that “Storm’s show includes mature subject matter and profanity” had me at hello. As her name portends, Storm Large is every bit the natural phenomenon. After shooting to prominence on “Rock Star: Supernova,” Large has built a career that includes regular gigs with Pink Martini and the Oregon Symphony, as well as her own one-woman shows. With her longtime band, Le Bonheur, Large leads a bold show that includes the Great American Songbook, Broadway standards, rock anthems and her own original songs -alongside some unfiltered stage banter that will entertain (and perhaps elicit a few blushes along the way). Storm Large & Le Bonheur perform at the Mondavi Center on Friday evening, May 3. For more information and tickets, go to https://www.mondaviarts.org/event/2018-19/storm-largele-bonheur. Roseanne Cash The highly acclaimed singer-songwriter and multiple Grammy winner Roseanne Cash long ago stepped out of the shadow of her famous father’s legendary career, and she continues to honor the late, great Johnny Cash with her own powerful music. Cash, whose recording career encompasses country, pop, Americana music and more, will perform at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre this May in support of her current Blue Note release, “She Remembers Everything.” An intimate performer whose deeply personal lyrics can move a listener to tears (and to tears of joy), Cash is currently involved with the creation of a musical version of “Norma Rae,” the 1979 film that won Sally Field her first Best Actress Oscar. Cash’s past hits include such memorable songs as “Seven Year Ache,” “Tennessee Flat Top Box,” “Runaway Train,” “The Way We Make A Broken Heart,” and “What We Really Want.” You can catch Cash at the Crest on Saturday evening, May 11. “Dear Evan Hansen” Set For Sac Plus “Disaster!” Sails In To STC by Chris Narloch

he wait is over. It’s official. The Broadway blockbuster and Tony-winning Best Musical of 2017 “Dear Evan Hansen” will be among the five shows coming to town during Broadway Sacramento’s next season, which will be presented at the Memorial Auditorium.
The National Tour of “Dear Evan Hansen” will anchor the 2019-20 Broadway Sacramento season. The musical will playing for two weeks.
The other four shows in the 2019-20 season are the hilarious musical version of “A Christmas Story;” the great 9/11 musical “Come From Away,” Robert De Niro’s musical version of his movie “A Bronx Tale,” and the WWII-era musical “Bandstand.” We will have to wait until later this year and next year to see those musicals. In the meantime, here is a hilarious hit show you can check out right now in Sacramento. Disaster! One of the funniest musicals I saw on Broadway this decade, “Disaster!” is Seth Rudetsky’s side splitting spoof of 1970s disaster movies and the unforgettable pop and disco tunes from that era.

India’s Openly Gay Prince Meets with Miami Beach-Based Source Events Travelers in Mumbai by Sharon Kersten

n a recent excursion to India, travelers on a tour through India with Miami Beach-based Source Events engaged in an up-close and personal dialogue at a private reception with Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, India’s openly gay royal who has become one of the country’s most vocal advocates for LGBTQ rights. “Travel at its best enriches us with new connections and a deeper understanding of the world in which we live,” said Craig Smith, president of Source Events. The company specializes in adventurous travel for the LGBT community and their friends, often incorporating opportunities for guests to enrich their understanding of other cultures. “Our guests are a reflection of a growing national trend of people who enjoy adventure, and are also seeking a greater purpose in their travels,” he added. Given the
context and process puts our own movement building into perspective.” Coincidentally, the reception took place just a few days after the Indian Holi festival, as it was during Holi that Prince Manvendra had come out publicly to a reporter 13 years ago. “It was the first day of Holi, India’s festival of colors, when wood and dung cakes are burned in a bonfire to signify the victory of good over evil,” the Prince later said in an interview. “The same pyre was then used to burn my effigies,” he lamented.

At the reception, the 21 members of the tour were able to interact in an informal setting with the Prince, who was joined by his husband Duke DeAndre Richardson. During that time, they learned about the challenges faced by India’s LGBTQ population, as well as the work of the Lakshya Trust, the foundation established by the Prince to advocate for, and improve the lives of, the marginalized communities of LGBTQ people and those infected with HIV in India. “Meeting with Prince Manvendra and his husband, and learning first-hand about their monumental work was inspiring,” said Liebe Gadinsky, co-chair of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, who was on the trip with her husband. “As in the United States, positive change begins with touching hearts and minds. The 53-year-old Prince had previously lived a very closeted life, conforming to the expectations of his family and fulfilling his royal obligations, including a marriage that was never consummated. It was in 2000, while still not out publicly, that Prince Manvendra established the Lakshya Trust, and in 2007, the year after he came out, he was invited to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show), which brought international attention to India’s LGBTQ issues. During the reception, Prince Manvendra was thrilled to announce that his dream of establishing India’s first LGBTQ Center will become a reality this year, and Source Events pledged their financial support to the project. “My own journey is the reason behind this Center. I was disowned and disinherited from my ancestral property after going public about my sexual orientation,” he said. “I understand the kind of struggles that LGBTQ men and women face after coming out, and my hope is that the Center will provide a safe and empowering space for others to achieve their potential.” outwordmagazine.com
