he movement is on to count everyone living in Greater Sacramento, across California and throughout the entire United States. It’s called the Census, and everyone counts. Everyone. Period. There has been a lot of concern with the The Census can sound obscure and inconsequential to some and downright scary to others, especially to many in the LGBTQ+ community. But let me tell you as a trans non-binary individual, there is nothing to fear and the Census is highly important as it will shape our community’s future for the next decade. Taking place every 10 \years, the Census is another word for a headcount. It comprises of a nine-question survey which determines federal funding for critical programs until the next Census in 2030. The more people who complete the Census, the more federal dollars the Sacramento area receives for things like schools, roads, nutritional programs and much, much more. While the Census movement aims to encourage every person to participate, for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual individuals, there are even more compelling reasons to make sure they get counted. To start, the more of us who get counted, the better our political representation becomes. Further, the Census helps fund HIV resources, housing and food access, adoption programs and grants that the Gender Health Center and the Sacramento LGBTQ Community Center rely on to fund their important programs. Even Medi-Cal receives funding based on how many people live in California recorded by way of the Census. As many in our LGBTQ+ family know, Medi-Cal serves as a crucial portal for transgender healthcare services. Anxieties, misconception and confusion exist among the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to the Census. In serving on the Complete Count LGBTQ+ Subcommittee and as Census Coordinator for Sacramento Covered, these concerns and questions are near-daily encounters for me. However, most of the roadblocks to Census participation disappear by answering peoples’ questions.

gender question: you can choose not to answer the question and still be counted. In fact, none of your responses have to match your legal records. Census answers are strictly kept confidential and safeguarded. It’s the law. Information collected cannot be shared with police, including Immigrations and Customs Enforcement or ICE. The questionnaire does not request citizenship status or social security number, bank details, or payment, and Census data is not used to determine eligibility for any public programs either. And here’s some exciting news to share: For the first time in history, a same-sex partner option appears on this decade’s Census survey. While the wording is still imperfect and the option applies only to partners living in the same dwelling, but it is still progress worth celebrating. There are three ways to complete the Census: through the paper form you should have already received in the mail, by phone at 844-468-2020 or online at www. my2020census.gov. Make sure to count everyone staying at your home, including anyone who lives at the address full-time, children and any family or friends who may be living there temporarily. The LGBTQ subcommittee, comprised of the Lavender Library, the Sacramento LGBTQ Community Center and the Gender

Health Center, created SacQUEERmento to allow the LGBTQ+ community in Sacramento to record their identities in greater depth. Fill this out in addition to the Census to help us get even more detailed local community statistics. The time is now for us to show up and make ourselves count. Complete the Census as soon as you can and please reach out to me if you have any questions. Mati Kuss Mati is the Census Coordinator at Sacramento Covered, where they serve on both the LGBTQ+ and Health subcommittees of the Sacramento Complete Count Committee. Their work consists of Census education and outreach within these communities to increase the count on the 2020 Census. Mati has always been passionate about fighting inequity, but their activism skills grew when they were a student at UC Davis. In college, their work focused primarily on gender equity and disability justice. They are chronically ill and it is through their experiences navigating the healthcare system as a queer and trans person that they became passionate about health inequity, particularly LGBTQ+ health. He is just one of many that have been unjustly murdered, including Stephon Clark, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor and many others.

Let’s not forget, the first “Pride” event was a 6-day protest and riot that started on June 28th, 1969 and was led by transgender women of color including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, after the NYPD served a warrant on the Stonewall Inn.

Law enforcement clubbed and beat the patrons before arresting them. They forced anyone suspected to be “crossdressers” into bathrooms to “have their sex checked”. Marsha Johnson threw that first brick, and the rest is history. Wouldn’t it be powerful if the Sacramento LGBT community dedicated our Pride month this year to the Black community to amplify their voices for justice through proclamation, supportive actions, and funding? Something needs to change and shouldn’t our community, which owes so much of our own liberation to women of color, step up and publicly ally ourselves? To be truthful in our effort, we must begin openly with an acknowledgment of the problems within our own community regarding race and discrimination. We must recognize the fact of white

and male privilege within the LGBT movement. We must be willing to suspend our personal opinions of protests, rioting and vandalism as means to an end so that we can come together as a united, unwavering supportive voice for the greater cause of ending violence against the Black community. Most importantly, any proclamation must be followed by supportive action and monetary support to local Black organizations doing social justice work. Only action in a supportive role will ensure our commitment is not performative. Lastly, we must not do it to be nice. We must do it because it is the right thing to do and it is owed. Human Rights Campaign Responds to Additional Charges in George Floyd Case

he Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization — responded to changes and additional charges regarding the George Floyd case, including the upgrading of charges against Officer Derek Chauvin to felony second-degree murder and new charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder against officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane. “For nearly nine minutes, Derek Chauvin had his knee pressed into George Floyd’s neck, while two other officers kneeled on Floyd’s body and a fourth stood by and watched,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “These new charges filed by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison are a step toward justice — both for George Floyd and his family. In order to combat racism and police brutality, it is imperative that our justice system hold these officers accountable for their repulsive actions and inactions, but we will not rest until we see convictions and actions to prevent future injustice. We will not rest until police stop taking Black lives away from our communities. We will not rest

’m tried! I’m tired! I’m TIRED! I am emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted. I’m tired of explaining why I’m upset and the history that you should already know!

I am tired of the soft-shoed responses from some of my White friends, things like: “I see racism on both sides”; “I agree with you but…” and “ALL LIVES MATTER”! Why does it make you so ANGRY that I say I matter? That Black Lives Matter? I’m sick and tired of you rolling your eyes every time I bring up the pain that Black people have experienced and continue to experience in this country, but you can snap your finger, shake your neck, give me ‘black’ sass, talk about your inner black woman and your “Shaw-ni’kwah” persona! Where are you when it comes to issues affecting the Black Community? Your Silence is Deafening! It is beyond traumatizing to watch videos of people dying PERIOD. But for me, my son and our family, it hits closer to home to watch unarmed black people dying at the hands of civil servants, while watching a militia storm Capitols across the U.S. protesting a stay at home order during a global pandemic, and they are being treated with kid gloves. I wasn’t going to say anything for fear of rejection by my white friends and coming across too political or too negative, or

giving you the impression that I feel all white people are prejudiced or racist. I know all white people aren’t racist, all cops aren’t bad, just like I know all BLACK people aren’t thugs. I’m a 45 year-old, gay black man, blessed to have a 23-year-old son. Yet, every day he leaves the safety of my home, I anxiously watch my phone for that dreaded text and what feels like the eventuality of, “Death By Cop.” A young black man, who, I have had to raise to understand that WE must fight a ridiculous number of stereotypes to be taken seriously in this world, could end up dead because of the color of his skin. I have seen firsthand, that people who willingly immigrate to this country, are given an image of Black people that we will have to fight to dispel, until we draw our last breath. And, that sometimes it’s not going to matter how well you carry yourself, how well you dress or how much money you have - you are still BLACK and that’s what they are going to see first, and, you’re going to be judged, not based on your actual character, but rather other’s preconceived notions. It blows my mind that my son spent seven months living in Greece, playing professional volleyball, and not once was I

worried that he was going to be racially profiled or die at the hands of their police. This is a very Americanized fear. You’re still rolling your eyes? Oh, what a privilege it is to educate yourself about racism instead of experience it! Many of you just don’t get it! In my black skin, I have grown up being very intimate with the double standards and contradictions of racism and white supremacy in America. It is something Black people in this country have had to do to survive. Just a little over 50 years ago, because of the color of my skin, I would not have been able to be friends with the majority of you who are reading this, let alone talk back to you, look you directly in your eyes, sit in the same restaurant or drink from the same faucet as you. It wasn’t because there were a “few” bad apples. It was the legal, systemic way to treat BLACK people in America. These are

things my mother and her siblings experienced. This is not antient history! I’m so tired of you rolling your eyes! Yes, there are ignorant people in ALL races - but what does that justify, that it’s okay? The fact that things like “Blackface” or that there’s an internet challenge called the #GeorgeFloydChallenge (Imitating the way an unarmed black man was recently murdered by a Police officer) exist is proof that we are still living and dealing with ignorance and prejudice. I’m tired of the backhanded compliments of “Oh Greg - I never look at you like that, you’re different. You don’t act ghetto, you speak proper - you don’t speak Ebonics.” What is that telling me? “You don’t act BLACK, therefore we accept you.” Thanks! Thank you for accepting me for not acting BLACK. The moral of the story is that when you are not the ethnic group that’s being targeted by the bigoted, racist satire and the “Boogaloo Boys” (look it up), it’s very easy for you to dismiss it, to say “Get over it,” to empathize or sympathize, and then remove yourself from it. It’s NOT a path that you have to walk on every day of your life. I think, the reason that you can’t seem to wrap your heads around this concept is simple, not complicated, it’s that you will never have to walk in my shoes. I’m just tired.

Fellow (Queer) White People, Let’s be Better Allies.

A riot is the language of the unheard”, something the LGBTQ+ community knows firsthand. Let’s not forget that while our celebrations are now often plagued with whitewashing and rainbow capitalism, the first Pride was a riot led by queer people of color. The Stonewall Uprising was five days of rioting, looting, and violent protests against police. That moment in history created the movement that brought us the LGBTQ+ rights many of us benefit from today. Friends, another moment is upon us now. Now is our opportunity to form the intersectional coalitions necessary to once again turn this moment into momentum towards lasting, meaningful change. We must stand in proactive solidarity with Black folks and people of color who have been marginalized by systems of oppression and white supremacy. If you refuse to support Black Lives Matter and prioritize the needs and voices of LGBTQ+ Black people, you have no business celebrating Pride this month or ever again. This is not about the unjust murder of one Black man. This is about rampant structural racism in a country built on the enslavement of Black people, that has disenfranchised and destroyed the lives of millions. We must hold these institutions accountable. As a community, we must use our own experiences of marginalization on the basis of our sexuality and gender to cultivate next-level empathy and non-performative allyship to our Black and POC communities, as well as amplify the voices of those that exist at the intersections of these identities. We as white people have no lived context for what it means to grow up as Black in America; where the entire system of law enforcement is not only not there to help, but is actively at war with you, all the while carefully rewriting the narrative to paint its own victims as the threat. ‘Privileged’ does

not mean without struggle, but it does mean you carry an obligation to do the work at unpacking how you have inadvertently or explicitly contributed to, benefitted from and tolerated white supremacy. Read up on Black history, especially the parts that make you feel uncomfortable in your whiteness. Sit with that, educate yourself, and then use that knowledge to have challenging conversations with your non-Black family and friends. Remember that allyship does not exist on a mountaintop. There is no medal of “wokeness” bestowed upon you to signify the completion of your journey. The process of combatting your privileges does not have a final destination, and it shouldn’t. There is always more work to do in the fight towards civic, racial, and economic justice. Every day we should commit ourselves to a continuation of growth, acknowledgement, and meaningful adaptation into the ways we may better decentralize ourselves from the conversation and vocally champion antiracism instead. Listen with empathy and put in the work to educate YOURSELF. There are plenty of free resources out there- many of which you can find within the pages of this magazine. But do not stop there! Do not post on social media and then move on with your life. This is where the real progress begins, in the uncomfortable, in the challenging, in the continual amplification of Black voices and struggles. Support local Black-led and employed businesses. Donate to Black-led, queer coalitions and grassroots organizations. Stay angry, stay loud, and stay passionate in this fight. We are just getting started.

Sacramento LGBT+ Community Finding Support Online or many of us, being separated from friends and family has

made it difficult to feel a sense of support and connectedness. This is especially difficult because most of us feel more connected when we socialize in-person. One of the core mission pillars of The Sacramento LGBT Community Center (The Center) is “Community Building.” As a community center, the Center prioritizes creating space for LGBT+ folks to feel empowered, connected, and safe. Since they haven’t been able to open their doors for the community during COVID-19, the Center has been hosting their support group meetings online. The Center hosts multiple online support group meetings such as Golden Grounds (a support group for LGBTQ seniors), Strength in Numbers (a support group for those who are HIV positive), and other community based meetings such as “Queerantine Karaoke,” Mental Health workshops, and weekly Laughter Yoga classes hosted on Zoom. Some of their group facilitators and participants wanted to share what these groups have meant to them during this difficult time, here is what they had to say. Melissa McManis hosted the Mental Health workshops which allowed group members to share what their experience during the pandemic has been like for them and then participants exchanged resources. Melissa stated, “I am a mental health therapist in the community as well, but I am going through my own personal stress related to the pandemic. All of us shared fears about the sense that there is a lot of uncertainty around it, and a lot of unknowns. People shared how they’ve been coping, and we talked about basic mental health resources such as grounding and meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and scheduling pleasant activities.” Melissa has also participated in some of the Center’s groups and most recently the Laughter Yoga sessions that are being offered weekly. For many of us, being inside has increased anxiety, feelings of depression, and instilled fear. Melissa stated that attending the yoga class has really helped get out of that “super serious mode” and feels

less anxiety after attending since laughter helps to release endorphins. Casey Wong is another community member who found the Center after they returned back to Sacramento after college. Casey has been a volunteer facilitator for groups at the Center and loves building relationships and supporting fellow queer people of color. Casey also stated, “Representation is important and it’s especially important to be able to bring all facets of your identity to the Center and find acceptance and love.” Francesca Dixon got involved with the Center not by choice, but out of a matter of survival. She needed someone to talk to because she was going through a lot of life changes. Fortunately, she was able to get the support she needed at the Center. Francesca is a frequent attendee to group meetings and wanted to share her opinion on what meetings are like. Francesca said, “I attend groups offered by the Center and find them very helpful. Everyone is friendly and supportive. Whether you need to rant or just need someone to talk with, the groups are great support systems. The groups are diverse, and members have varied perspectives as to issues, so every session allows for growth, learning, and understanding. I always get something out of each group I attend - it is never a waste of time.” If folks are looking for ways to get involved in the LGBTQ+ community, the Center is here for you. n the wake of our social justice movement, we must not forget our Black Trans community that is suffering an even deeper ripple of systematic hate and failure. Far too often, justice for Black Trans people is never obtained and consistently silenced. According to the 2015 U.S Transgender Survey Report, 61% of the Black trans participants surveyed reported mistreatment and harassment by law enforcement while 67% reported feeling very uncomfortable asking police to intervene when needing help. Fear of altercations and harassment by law enforcement and the overall system’s failure to protect our most vulnerable communities too often leads to Black transgender people repeatedly being victims of violence and discrimination. Black people and especially Black Trans people are at greater risk for

As a white trans ally, I will work diligently to amplify my Black trans siblings voices and utilize my privileges to ensure that they feel supported and protected always. Tony McDade was one of those people that was failed by the law enforcement and the criminal justice system. On May 27, 2020, in the wake of the tragic loss of George Floyd, a Black Transgender man named Tony McDade was another victim of police brutality after he was shot and killed by a Tallahasse Florida Police Officer who’s name has not yet been released by officials. A full police report has yet to be released by the Tallahassee Florida Police Department, but neighbors and witnesses to his death say that the officers fired on Tony without warning after first complying to their orders of staying still. Far too often it comes into question whether the murder of Black trans

Being Black and being trans is an intersectional experience that often increases vulnerability of this population and yet are still one of the most underprotected and underserved communities in America. We must protect our Black communities, our trans communities, and our Black trans communities at all cost.

Gary Miller, Out and Proud in ‘87

Gary Miller became the first out front LGBT elected official in Sacramento County in 1987. He was elected to the Robla School Board in North Sacramento beating two incumbents even with a homophobic campaign against him. He first became involved in (what was then called) the homophile movement in his home town of Kansas City, Mo. in 1968. He served on the Robla board for almost 20 years. Several times winning in spite of homophobic candidates running against him. Once he won against an opponent, who said the only reason he was running against Mr. Miller, was to get the “fag” off the school board. Gary Miller became the first out front LGBT elected official in Placer County in 2008 winning a seat on the Roseville City School Board defeating one incumbent. He served on the Roseville board for 12 years and is running for re-election this year. In 2016, when he ran for re-election, Republicans put out a hit piece against him saying he was “destroying” their values. He is expecting similar hit pieces this year. Dance Your Ass Off With Diana & Gaga

f you have cabin fever and miss the dance floor, there are two new CDs that will get your floorboards quaking. Get ready for a quarantine disco dance party starring Lady Gaga and Diana Ross. Diana Ross – Supertonic Mixes Middle-aged music fans like myself will enjoy this remix album from Ms. Ross, the original diva of soul, who enlisted Eric Kupper to retool nine of her finest tracks for the dance floor, including sexy songs such as “Love Hangover” and “Touch Me in the Morning.” The disc begins with a bang thanks to a fun mash-up of “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down,” the monster hits off her great “Diana” album from 1980, which was produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. Three of the best cuts on this remix project are from “The Boss,” Ross’ other classic dance record: “No One Gets The Prize,” “It’s My House,” and the title track. Also included on “Supertonic Mixes” are two of my favorite songs from Ross’s catalog, “Remember Me” and the iconic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” While none of these remixes are super-adventurous, they are energetic and fun, and they allow Ross’s fans to hear her classic hits in an interesting new light. Lady Gaga – Chromatica Millennial music fans should enjoy this new disc from Lady G, who returns to her dance floor roots for a non-stop disco party that pulsates from start to finish with sixteen new songs. I was not a huge fan of Lady Gaga’s first CD, but I love the way she has stretched herself since then, tackling jazz, rock, and different varieties of pop music. For me, Chromatica is Gaga playing it safe and wandering back into familiar pastures, but fans of her first record will not be disappointed. There isn’t a slow song anywhere on “Chromatica,” and an up-tempo dance record might be just what the doctor ordered during this dark time on planet Earth. The CD’s first single, “Stupid Love,” is catchy enough, and so is “Rain on Me,” Gaga’s duet with Ariana Grande. I was worried that the much-hyped collaboration between Gaga and Grande might turn out to be a diva duet disaster, but it’s decent – not great and not very memorable but basically fun. Many of the tracks on “Chromatica” are short bursts of EDM – some of the songs are less than three minutes long and feel underdeveloped – but I enjoyed “Sour Candy,” Gaga’s foray into K-pop with the women of Blackpink. “Sine from Above,” the artist’s duet with Elton John is not as successful as the other collaborations on “Chromatica,” and like much of the CD, it feels both underwritten and over-produced. Perhaps after the soul-searching of “Joanne” and “A Star Is Born,” Lady Gaga just wanted to dance her ass off, and there is nothing wrong with that. I just hope that on her next release, she wanders off in a new direction again. outwordmagazine.com

“We came together to let people know we are inclusive and loving congregations,” stated Doug Treadwell, chair of the Reconciling & Social Justice Team at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in mid-town Sacramento. He and his committee spearheaded the plan to march in the parade with constituents from United Methodist churches in Grass Valley, Davis, Loomis, Roseville, Elk Grove along with churches in the greater Sacramento area. “I think that the most important thing that happened in this effort [was] to continue working together,” said Treadwell, who polled the marchers on whether they wanted to continue to meet and work alongside one another in advocacy efforts. He discovered they did. “Doug asked those who represented the various churches in the parade if they were interested in continuing the coalition in order to search out the LGBTQ needs in the Sacramento area and collectively try to make a positive difference,” said Mark Guzman, member of The Table at Central UMC in Sacramento. “My husband and I immediately signed on.” There are many other churches, faith-based groups and religious organizations who support and advocate on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community. “This isn’t a time to be standing alone,” added Guzman’s husband, Scott Coatsworth. “Now we have a vehicle to bring together our like-minded churches, which feels important to me as we face an uncertain future…” The Methodist PRIDE Collective (MPC) was formed in August and continued to meet monthly, making action plans and following through on joint strategies by using volunteers from the various participating churches and co-funding those efforts. In the past few months, their work ranged from gathering

donations to hosting educational events. In January, the group held their first Benefit Concert to support the work of the Trans & Queer Youth Collective (TQYC). The TQYC provides gender-affirming health services and LGBTQ+ education under the supervision of TQYC Mental Health Director, Queer identified, Julie Strathdee, MFTA. “Advocacy is local,” said Rev. Dr. Israel Alvaran, of the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN). Alvaran works at the national level along with other advocacy groups including the Human Rights Coalition (HRC) and National LGBTQ Task Force. Although he oversees a network of United Methodist churches across the western United States, Alvaran believes that change begins one person at a time. He supports the collaborative work of the local collective. “Advocacy can take a number of different avenues … what I see happening at the grass roots level in the Sacramento Methodist Pride Collective is exciting.” “I love how driven the group and its members are in finding ways to help. It’s much more than a social group or an exchange,” added Coatsworth. “It’s a way to promote the efforts of individual churches within a collective to help the LGBTQ+ community and to come up with our own initiatives that will serve to build more of a community-wide spirit and response to the needs of the community.” Instead of marching down the street, this year, United Methodist churches of the MPC will be participating in the 2020 Virtual PRIDE March by submitting video clips from each congregation –-waving and shouting affirmation and hope. “What I love about the Methodists is that they put their love to work,” stated Treadwell. “We do what Christ has taught us to do—when we say, ‘All means All’, we mean it.”

Queer Movies For Pride Part 2

ride season always makes me reflect on where we have been and where we are at cinematically speaking. Here are four movies that you may want to check out when you have time, including a delightful lesbian love story now on Netflix, a recent queer drama from Israel, and two gayfriendly films from the golden age of Hollywood. 15 Years If you’re in the mood for a superb drama about how difficult it is to sustain a gay, male relationship (or any romantic relationship for that matter), then this terrific Israeli film should fill the bill. After a disagreement about the prospect of parenting divides two men who have been together for 15 years, the pair tries desperately to repair their bond. “15 Years” is a poignant and powerful adult drama that deserves to be seen by a wide audience. Reflections in a Golden Eye This 1967 oddity was risky material back then and is still a head-scratcher today. Marlon Brando stars as a repressed homosexual military officer whose wild wife (Elizabeth Taylor) is having an affair with their friend (Brian Keith). A Message from the SF LGBT Center: Black Lives Matter

e start with an acknowledgement of the continued loss of black lives to violence rooted in white supremacy and to the racial impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on communities of color.

As we surpassed 100,000 lives lost to COVID-19, the spread of the pandemic has exposed the profound racial disparities in health care, employment, education, and the way that generations of institutionalized racism have impacted the lives of people of color – particularly back and brown people. While we mourn all of those lost to COVID19, we must not ignore the fact that this pandemic has exposed and exploited racial disparities and that communities of color have carried the brunt of death and loss. But it doesn’t end there. This spring the we have seen the continued loss of black lives to police violence – from George Floyd to Breonna Taylor to Ahmaud Arbery to Tony McDade – the death toll continues to rise. We understand what it means to rise up and push back against a culture that tells us we are less than, that our lives don’t matter. That’s why I want to take this moment to rededicate ourselves to this struggle.

Together, we must fundamentally address systemic racism. We must join together again to say #BlackLivesMatter and commit ourselves to the action those words require. That’s why we’re proud to join more than 100 LGBTQ+ and civil rights organizations condemning racism, racial violence and police brutality while calling for action to combat these scourges. This year we have an opportunity to return to the roots of Pride – a grassroots uprising protesting police brutality and harassment – and to build on those roots to address the injustices that we experience today. All My Children airs first daytime lesbian kiss

ABC airs the first lesbian kiss on the daytime drama All My Children when Bianca, who was Erica Kane’s daughter, and played by straight ally Eden Riegel, kisses Lena. Bianca’s enemy on the show, Greenlee, would insult her by coining the nickname, “LesBianca.” The Supreme Court strikes down all remaining sodomy laws in Lawrence vs. Texas.

Take Me Out debuts on Broadway. The acclaimed play is about a mixed race closeted professional baseball player and the ramifications – both good and bad – of what happens when he decides to come out of the closet. The play was nominated for 4 Tony Awards and won 3, including Best Play.

The United States Census Bureau releases figures showing that 34.3% of lesbian households and 22.3% of gay households are raising children. The report also shows that 99.3% of US counties have households with same-sex couples. 26 Outword Magazine

Wal-Mart Stores adds “sexual orientation” to its corporate nondiscrimination policy. Bravo debuts Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, a reality series where five gay men would help makeover a straight man’s life. The show was a hit and wins an Emmy.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show (now known simply as Ellen) premieres and quickly becomes a hit. The Massachusetts Supreme Court rules that a ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, making it the first state to determine that.

2004 After the city of San Francisco, under Mayor Gavin Newsom’s order, starts issuing samesex marriage licenses, lesbians Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon get married and, become the first same-sex marriage in the country.

The California Supreme Court orders San Francisco to stop marrying same-sex couples. San Francisco then sues the state of California. Democratic Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm appoints Rudy Sera to be a judge, the first openly gay judge in the state. Professional golfer and Hall of Fame member Rosie Jones comes out as gay.

Showtime debuts The L Word, a scripted series about a group of lesbians living in Los Angeles. It would run for 5 years. New Jersey Democratic Governor James McGreevey admits to having had an affair with a man, making him the first openly gay governor in the country. He announces his resignation at the same time.

Navratilova says this is the first time she’s gotten an endorsement because she’s a lesbian. The California Legislature passes a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, becoming the first state to do so without judicial prompting. However, Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger then vetoes the bill. In State v. Limon, the Kansas Supreme Court strikes down a clause of the “Romeo and Juliet” law that punished underage sex more severely if it involved homosexual acts.

Brokeback Mountain is released. It’s a major motion picture about a romance between two male cowboys, starring straight actors Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The proposed “Federal Marriage Amendment” – which limits marriage to one man and one woman – fails to pass in the US House of Representatives by a vote of 227-186.

Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Spain and then Canada. Meanwhile, Uganda and Latvia amend their constitutions to prohibit same-sex marriage.

2008 Democratic Presidential Candidates

The first ever LGBT issues presidential Democratic debate is hosted by the Logo cable channel. Senators Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, former senator Mike Gravel and Representative Dennis Kucinich all participated. Logo also asked the Republican candidates to participate, but they declined.

2008 Domestic partnerships begin in Oregon, after a court decides that it does not conflict with the state’s constitution, which forbids same-sex marriage.

Nicaragua and Panama legalize homosexuality. The California Supreme Court strikes down the state’s ban on same-sex marriages, with marriage being available starting in June.

GLAAD initiates a Sports Media Project and hires the first director, Ted Rybka, to monitor media coverage of LGBTQ issues in sports.

The Maryland Court of Appeals overturns a lower court ruling and rules that its constitution does not require the state to recognize or sanction same-sex marriage.

The Coquille Indian Tribe in Oregon legalizes same-sex marriage. The state of Oregon does not recognize same-sex marriages, but the tribe is recognized as a sovereign nation, so they are not bound by Oregon’s laws. Ecuador legalizes same-sex civil unions, but at the same time, constitutionally bans marriage and adoption for same-sex couples.

Eleven openly gay, lesbian and bisexual Olympians win a total of seven medals at the Bejing games, including a gold medal in diving won by Australian Matthew Mitcham, the only openly gay man competing. Connecticut overturns a state ban on samesex marriages and becomes the third state to allow them, after California and Massachusetts.

That means I can finally retire my lowquality, bootleg DVD copy of the Broadway blockbuster, which was illegally filmed (not by me!) from a NYC theater balcony and then sold online during the height of “Hamilton”-mania in 2015. Even if you have already seen “Hamilton” on tour, you haven’t really seen “Hamilton” until you’ve witnessed Lin-Manuel Miranda and his original Broadway cast, who helped shape the real-life characters they portrayed in the show. Created and composed by Miranda, the show has won 11 Tony Awards as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. The upcoming film version directed by Tommy Kail was shot live in 2016 with that amazing original Broadway cast, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York. If you don’t already have a subscription to Disney+, July 3 might be a good time to start your 7-day free trial. Since stay-at-home measures were enacted, I have been taking advantage of a number of free trials, including a very generous entire month of Hulu, home to edgy fare like “The Handmaid’s Tale” starring the wonderful Elisabeth Moss. outwordmagazine.com

I just finished watching all nine episodes of “Mrs. America” on Hulu, and I can’t say enough nice things about this show. A funny and dramatic depiction of the early days of the women’s movement and the fight for the ERA in the ‘70s, “Mrs. America” boasts a superb cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Paulson, Uzo Aduba, Tracey Ullman, Margo Martindale, John Slattery, and James Marsden. Free trials of streaming services such as Hulu and Disney+ have saved me from having to submit to the price-gouging happening with a few of the major movie studios – Universal is the worst offender – who are charging $20 for a 48-hour rental (not a purchase, a rental) of mediocre new movies like “The Hunt” and “The High Note.” A low-cost alternative for movie lovers is Tubi, a free streaming service that is celebrating Pride Month with a library of complimentary queer titles that includes such wonderful films as “God’s Own Country,” “Poison,” “Jeffrey,” and many more. ilm festivals have had to get creative to survive in 2020, and two of Northern California’s finest annual cinematic events are refusing to let the coronavirus cancel their fun. Both Sacramento’s French Film Festival and San Francisco’s Frameline film festival are returning (virtually) this June with exciting new movies. Book Review: “Confessions of a Gay Priest” by Tom Rastrelli

ou spent days examining your life. Sins: that’s what you were looking for. How had you displeased God? How many lies, covets, dishonors? What have you done since – oh, when was your last confession, anyhow? They say the sacrament is good for your soul, and in “Confessions of a Gay Priest” by Tom Rastrelli, there’s a lot to tell. Though he’d always known that he liked boys, little Tommy Rastrelli pretended the opposite when he was in gradeschool because marriage was what good Catholics did. His family was devout and Rastrelli never questioned God’s love. Not even after, he says, he was repeatedly molested by a doctor in his Iowa hometown. For several reasons, he never told his parents about the abuse, enduring it for years until he’d convinced them that he was too old for a pediatrician. That God hadn’t saved him from a predator made Rastrelli slowly lose his faith and his self-respect. He stopped attending Mass and began questioning the Church’s teachings. But then God called a shocked Tom Rastrelli to the priesthood. It happened while he was at college, and the whole idea quickly consumed him. Gone was the plan to major in theatre; instead, Rastrelli began to explore a world steeped in mystery and ritual, but overlaid with fear. Always believing that testimony against the doctor could save others from the same

And then he fell into a deep depression, with only one real way out... “The Confessions of a Gay Priest” is a hard, hard book to read – it’ll make you squirm, it’ll make your eyebrows raise, you’ll want to toss it on the street and let semis run it over and yet, it’s stay-up-allnight compelling. Beginning with his ordination (so you know-don’t-know the end of the story), author Tom Rastrelli tells a tale that will further shock Catholics already reeling from church-related scandals. This book, however, is not written in the same manner as is a diocesan document: Rastrelli is sometimes extremely graphic, both in the bedroom and in his various emotional states. He doesn’t pull back the curtains on Confessions of a Gay Priest author Tom Rastrelli. PHOTO CREDIT: Frank Miller his experiences, he rips them down and burns them. He used pseudonyms, but tells abuse, Rastrelli took legal action, knowing that scandal could ruin his chance to attend details before softening his harshness with beautiful language, strong faith, and poetic seminary. There were many things undiscussable, in distractions that play with a reader’s fact, and the court case was only half of it. As sympathy. You can’t beat a book like that, though its he progressed in his journey to ordination, the secrets included priestly kisses, caresses, graphic nature needs to again be underscored. For a reader who can endure and soft lies that a “backrub” was just a backrub. At nearly every gathering, Rastrelli a panoply of squirms, “Confessions of a Gay Priest” is worth deep examination. was approached for sex or touched

have been watching this new, fifth season on Netflix for the past couple of days (I think I am five episodes in..?) and I have to say it is so good having the boys back. Their little, half-season in Japan just wasn’t nearly as satisfying as the rest of the seasons and it is great to see them back in action and doing what they do best. It’s pretty obvious that this gang is very concerned about making everyone feel welcome, but this time around it feels much more natural. Earlier seasons felt like they were going down a checklist of the important, inclusive things they needed to tackle. Tan still has big hair and what look to be wildly expensive clothes. Johnathan is still fluttering everywhere, usually with his belly showing. Karamo is, well, just fine and I love his t-shirts. Antoni seems to have dialed it back from trying to have their “Heroes” make complex, gourmet meals. He is keeping things simple and delicious – and I love that he loves dogs so much! Bobby seems a bit out of place, though. Nothing bad, but he doesn’t seem to get that much screen time, and his designs are a bit brooding, or just good, not stunning. But, I love him regardless. I love all of them. This show is good, simple fun and, like I said before, I’m so glad they are back.
