e are proud to honor and celebrate the lives, contributions and voices of Black LGBTQ people in our nation’s past, present, and future. The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus cannot give enough thanks to black LGBTQ people, many of whom fought for the rights we have today. We honor their sacrifices made in service to their communities and the nation at large. The Black community, and more specifically Black LGBTQ people, have been at the forefront of social justice movements since the inception of our country. From the Underground Railroad to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s to the Black Lives Matter movement of today, every advance in
racial progress and equality was led in some fashion by a Black person. We understand that Black activism has so often been born out of necessity, so that Black people can live and thrive in a nation built by their ancestors. We are committed to continuing to work with the Black community in an effort to end all forms of oppression. And we are reminded of the words said by our sister in
the LGBTQ community, Audre Lorde: ‘When I dare to be powerful — to use my strength in the service of my vision — then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.’ We in the LGBTQ ommunity know, more than most, what it means to ‘dare to be powerful’ and we are eternally grateful to the Black community for helping to lead the way in this mission.”
Celebrate Black History Month & Cicely Tyson
J
ust look at that fierce photo on the cover of her recently released autobiography -- it tells you everything you need to know about the late, great Cicely Tyson, who was just as beautiful with her head shaved as she was with a full crop of hair. Long before “Black Panther” was ever dreamed of, the actress was the original Wakanda woman warrior.
By Chris Narloch
Ms. Tyson, who died this January 28 at the ripe old age of 96, was one of the finest actors of her generation (or any generation). She possessed both a blazing talent and a trailblazing spirit. Ms. Tyson always seemed to have perfect timing, and so it seems oddly fitting that she would pass just before Black History Month, since she was a legend of black cinema, as well as the stage and the small screen. I first took notice of Ms. Tyson’s towering talent in the Oscar-nominated 1972 film “Sounder,” a terrific movie about a family of sharecroppers in the Depression-era Deep South, which brought the actress her only Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. Later that same decade, Ms. Tyson graced the small screen with legendary performances in two of the finest television movies ever made, “Roots” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.” An activist as well as an actress, Cicely Tyson kept performing into her ‘90s, and she still had the magic when I saw her on Broadway in her late 80s, in the 2013 production of “The Trip to Bountiful.” I am currently tearing through Ms. Tyson’s new autobiography, “Just As I Am,” and so far it is as graceful and moving as I had hoped. If you don’t already have the book, you may have to wait a bit, since both the hardcover and audio versions were out of stock on Amazon as I wrote this. While you wait to get your hands on a copy of “Just As I Am,” I recommend celebrating Black History Month by watching any (or all three) of the aforementioned films Ms. Tyson made in the ‘70s. The actress and her best roles were Black History personified.

ebruary 14th – Valentine’s Day – a time to share love and hearts. Capital City AIDS Fund (CCAF) promotes caring for one another – more than ever – during these challenging times. Our Play, But Play Safe team is back at Badlands and Faces distributing condoms – and now hand sanitizers – via our custom dispensers. During these difficult times of COVID-19, it is invaluable that we care for one another – more than ever. Love and compassion will get us through. And that means staying safe and preventing more cases of both COVID and HIV. We know both pandemics cause potentially deadly viruses. That is, unless we use prevention. That’s why CCAF continues to distribute condoms in bars. We encourage you to use them – and Play, But Play Safe. Condoms will not, however prevent Coronavirus. You must remain vigilant. Wear a mask. Use our free hand sanitizers given away via our dispensers in the bars. Social distance unless you’re with someone you know well. It’s not exactly the old days, but life is worth it. Have fun but getting sick or spreading virus to others, is not worth letting your guard down. CCAF embraces the U=U campaign and widely promotes it. The concept is yet another way of protecting yourself from contracting HIV. Testing for HIV is imperative to remain healthy while also keeping your partner safe. U=U means Undetectable=Untransmittable. In other words, if a person living with HIV is on HIV meds and has a consistently undetectable viral load, the virus cannot be transmitted to a sex partner. This is Treatment as Prevention. Again, it’s why knowing your status and taking action is imperative. So many positive steps forward have been taken with the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Still, researchers report that patients newly infected with HIV are being diagnosed in greater numbers now because they are showing up at hospitals with symptoms similar to COVID. We must remain vigilante. David Pitrak, MD of the University of Chicago reported that during the first eight months of the COVID-19 pandemic, his institution found new cases of HIV at a rate of nearly 15 percent per year. In contrast, the annual rate during the previous four years was 6.8 percent. The good news is that all of the newly diagnosed cases reportedly entered treatment.
February 11, 2021 - February 25, 2021 • No. 665.5
Robert Glatter, MD, of Lennox Hill Hospital School of Medicine in New York City said that since the COVID pandemic began, he has not seen a significant increase in the number of patients testing positive for HIV. “That said,” he continued, “I have taken care of a few patients in the emergency room with newly diagnosed COVID-19 who incidentally tested positive for HIV. HIV is part of the diagnostic and lab evaluation when we evaluate patients at high risk for COVID-19, or who are found to be positive for COVID-19. It is vital to know their HIV status in the setting of such a viral illness.” Neither of the pandemics has gone away. Still, on both fronts there are things you can do to protect yourself. Be proactive, test regularly for HIV and test for COVID if you suspect exposure. Get vaccinated for Coronavirus when you are able, and always seek treatment if you are diagnosed with HIV or COVID. We don’t want to see more people dying from either virus. We know love will win. When you love yourself.

Trans and Queer Youth Advocacy: A Family for Everyone

By Judah Joslyn (He/Him/His)
020 was a challenging year for everyone; from social reckonings to Covid-19, many people felt the harsh effects that 2020 brought. For Trans and Queer youth, the isolation and decrease community connections were met with a decline in mental health. But through the pandemic one organization in Sacramento has been a place to call home.
The Trans and Queer Youth Collective (TQYC), which serves Trans and Queer youth in grades 6-12, provides free affirming and therapeutic services to the greater Sacramento area and beyond. Started in 2019, the goal of TQYC has been to provide free mental health services to young Queer and Trans people. Since its start, it has been able to grow and provide a wide range of affirming resources. In August of 2020, TQYC hired Judah Joslyn as the Transgender Advocacy Director to further the program’s efforts to provide safe and affirming care to Trans youth. “Becoming a part of TQYC has been one of the most fulfilling career choices I have ever made”, says Judah. “As a Trans man, I didn’t have access to these kinds of programs growing up, and if I had, it might have lessened the struggle I faced at that age.” His position has enabled the program to add a mentorship program, additional support groups, and expanded crisis support services. “2020 and even now in 2021 Trans and Queer youth are struggling. In some cases, they are stuck at home with families that do not support them and

Enchanting Carousel Joins the Waterfront Wheel at the Old Sacramento Waterfront

n addition to the 65’ Waterfront Wheel that has been safely and spectacularly entertaining visitors to the Old Sacramento Waterfront since it debuted in October 2020, a Front Street Carousel is now in place to further dazzle and delight the community. Both operated by Brass Ring Amusements, the attractions are located in Waterfront Park (on Front Street in front of Rio City Café). To help keep the community safe, safety protocols are in place that include physically distanced line queues, regularly sanitized carts (with employee disinfecting of high-touch surfaces, restraints after patrons disembark, etc.), and contactless payment and admission.
Both the Waterfront Wheel and Front Street Carousel are operating every day, seven days a week as conditions allow. Hours of operation for both are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (with special holiday hours upon occasion). Cost to ride either attraction is $6 per rider per ride. Waterfront Wheel riders must be at least 42” to ride alone and all must be in the same household in each open-air cart (that holds up to four people). The 2021 International Winemakers Summit Honors Diverse Winemakers
W
inemaking is a centuries old profession originating in Old World France and yet, in 2021 little is still known about the rapidly increasing growth of diversity in the industry. With an estimated 80,000 wineries worldwide, the US is 4th in the world in wine production.
“I’m so excited to celebrate 12 Black winemakers, to honor them for their contributions in the wine industry and being the face of possibilities for the next generation of Black winemakers. There are over 10,000 wineries in the US. lder men lusting after younger women has been a thing in Hollywood (on and off-screen) since the earliest days of silent films. Some of those scenarios have produced terrific entertainments that comment on our society’s obsession with youth and beauty. The two films below would make a dynamite doublebill that I’m calling “Baby Dolls On Blu-ray.”
Sue Lyon stars in “Lolita.”
Carroll Baker stars in “Baby Doll.”
Baby Doll This movie was hot stuff in 1956 -- so much so that it was denounced by the Legion of Decency -- and it still sizzles today. Times are tough for cotton miller Archie (Karl Malden), but at least he has his teenaged child bride (Carroll Baker), who’ll soon be his wife in title and truth. The one-year agreement keeping the couple under the same roof – yet never in
the same bed – is about to expire, and a fight with a sly business rival (Eli Wallach) for baby doll’s affections is about to begin. In “Baby Doll,” as in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” director Elia Kazan and writer Tennessee Williams broke new ground in depicting sexual situations, and as a result, the movie was banned in many countries and condemned by Time magazine. Ultimately, the film also earned laurels too:
Mason, Peter Sellers, Shelley Winters, and Sue Lyon (as Lolita) hits it out of the park under Kubrick’s expert direction. Mason plays Humbert Humbert, a European professor who relocates to an American suburb and proceeds to marry a lonely widow (Winters) in order to get close to her sexy teenaged daughter. Only Nabokov’s screenplay was Oscarnominated, but “Lolita” is now considered one of Kubrick’s finest films. The Blu-ray of this title has been out for some time and is currently available. To purchase these and other great Warner Bros. titles, please visit www.wbshop.com/warnerarchive
four Academy Award® nominations, Golden Globe® Awards for Baker and Kazan, and a British Academy Award for Wallach. Don’t miss this funny, sexy, dark comedy classic. “Baby Doll” will be available on Blu-ray this Feb. 16. Lolita Although there is a newer big-screen adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s infamous novel, starring Jeremy Irons and directed by Adrian Lyne, this 1962 classic version directed by Stanley Kubrick is the one you need to see (and, really, own). Nabokov actually wrote the screenplay himself, and a great cast that includes James

New Queer Cinema Reviewed
I
still get excited when good gay movies come along, because I am old enough to remember a time when LGBTQ films were few and far between (and often bad). Thankfully, times have changed for the better, and this month’s queer movie reviews include five tremendous titles.
By Chris Narloch The Strong Ones Another terrific queer Chilean film, “The Strong Ones” (“Los Fuertes”) follows Lucas, who travels to visit his sister in a remote city in Southern Chile and falls in love with Antonio, a foreman on a local fishing boat. Sensitive, intimate and romantic, “The Strong Ones” is an excellent love story about two men who form a strong bond despite their differences. To watch “The Strong Ones,” visit https://www.bgpics.com/movies/the-strong-ones/
Two of Us This thrilling lesbian drama keeps racking up rave reviews and award nominations, and you’ll understand why. Filippo Meneghetti does an amazing job directing a wonderful story about two older female neighbors who have kept their relationship a secret for decades, until an unforeseen event forces their love into the light. Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier are perfect as the lovers, and “Two of Us” has a real shot at being nominated for an Oscar this year as France’s submission for Best International Feature Film. You can watch “Two of Us” On Demand.
T he lead actors in “T he Strong Ones”
Cowboys I am a big fan of Steve Zahn, and the handsome actor gives another compelling performance as a troubled, newly separated dad who unwisely takes his trans son into the Montana wilderness without telling mom, who is transphobic. In addition to Zahn, “Cowboys” features topnotch work from Jillian Bell as the mother and Ann Dowd as a sympathetic detective. “Cowboys” is available to stream via https://www.angelikaanywhere.com T he stars of “Two of Us”
The Prince There hasn’t been a good, homoerotic men-behind-bars movie in far too long, and “The Prince” (“El Principe”) is the one we’ve been waiting for. Filled with full frontal nudity, simulated gay sex, a surprisingly moving story and fine performances, the film follows a young man (sexy Juan Carlos Maldonado) who does what he has to do to survive behind bars. Desperation leads to love among strange bedfellows in “The Prince,” a gritty Chilean drama that I can recommend without reservation. “The Prince” is available to rent on YouTube and other platforms.
A still from “Cowboys”
Supernova Although it’s slow to get going and sometimes difficult to watch, this poignant drama features stellar performances by two great actors, Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth, who play longtime lovers facing the end of their relationship, as Tucci’s character slips into dementia. You have to be in the mood for something serious, but “Supernova” rewards viewers with a deep commitment to a challenging story about love and loss. “Supernova” will release On Digital beginning Feb. 16.

6 HUGE Signs Your Partner is in Love with You this Valentines Day
B
eing in the honeymoon stage of a relationship is the most exciting feeling ever. However, after a turbulent year of social restrictions and couples self isolating together, it is difficult to keep the honeymoon spark alive. So, without throwing questions about your relationship at your other half and making things super awkward, what are the biggest signs to look out for which signify love is still in the air?
Slotsource.com has teamed up with leading body language expert Nick Davies to reveal the biggest signs you’re still making your partner hot under the collar even if you have a cucumber face mask on and haven’t changed out of your slacks the whole weekend. Below is a list of signs to look out for so you can put your mind at rest this Valentines Day: Maintaining Eye Contact Someone who is in love with you will gaze deep into your eyes, unable to break the eye contact - whether they know they’re doing it or not - when you are talking about something that is important to you. Communication A good indicator to see if someone loves you, is if their entire focus is on you and remain fully engaged with you in conversation because they genuinely like to hear you chat away. Touching Touch is a good indicator of love. Look to see if they pull your leg over theirs - or vice versa - when watching a film or notice to see if they hold your hand on the regular. Playing with their hair In the bedroom, Women will often play with their hair to show their neck, and display their wrists unconsciously to display their most vulnerable arteries to show their trust in you. Flex muscles Guys on the other hand might flex muscle groups unconsciously like shoulders, chest and arms to demonstrate strength to be able to protect you. Notice How they Look at You It would be impractical to always look at each other seductively when you’re in it for the long run and living together. But, it is important that it does still happen often, look out for them scanning your face, looking at each eye and then down to your mouth, occasionally pout slightly when they want to kiss you. You can find the full report on body language at: https://www.slotsource.com/poker-face
Yes, it’s still the age of COVID, so Outword Magazine is encouraging our readers to adopt a single friend this month. Single yourself? Adopt another person who is also single or living alone! It’s important (especially right now) to check in on your friends to make them feel more CONNECTED. Here’s some things to ask:
“So...What’s Going On With You?” “Can We Video Chat?” “Do You Know How Much I Love Talking To You?” Let’s just make sure we all know it is OK to not be OK and we are all in this TOGETHER.
