On Thursday, May 27, Davis Phoenix Coalition representatives will speak at the virtual Davis Chamber of Commerce meeting. The presentation will offer practical tips on how businesses can be welcoming to LGBTQ+ individuals. Participants will receive a rainbow poster to hang in store windows that show their support of Pride Month. The popular rainbow crosswalks will be painted around Central Park on Sunday, May 30. Volunteers will begin spraying the temporary chalk paint at 6 a.m., and continue until about 11 a.m. To volunteer, go to http://bit.ly/rainbowcrosswalks. Meanwhile, the city will hang Davis Pride rainbow banners throughout town, on display throughout June. The Davis City Council passed a resolution allowing the rainbow flag to be flown at City Hall as well. Business owners are asked to show their support by hanging a rainbow flag poster in their window. Posters are free, and available by emailing admin@davisphoenixco.org. A Rainbow Skate Party is set for 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 in Central Park. Inline and roller-skating participants are welcome to roll to DJ music in an area that will be fenced off under the Davis Farmers Market pavilion. Those wearing rainbow gear will be eligible to win prizes. Davis Pride teams up with the Davis Craft and Vintage Market for the Davis Pride Festival on Sunday, June 13. The festival will have entertainment from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., including live bands and a drag queen revue. The craft market, traditionally on the first Sunday of the month, is returning for a second market in June. Health guidelines require participants to have tickets and assigned seating to attend the show. Tickets May 27, 2021 - June 10, 2021 • No. 673
are free, with donations accepted. On Friday, June 25, rainbows will light up the monthly Bike Party Davis ride. Participants will gather at 7 p.m. at the north end of Central Park. The ride will go from 7 to 8 p.m. on an easy, 8-mile loop through town. In honor of the late Cathy Speck, the best-decorated bicycle will win a “Specktacular” gift basket of swag from a local bike shop. June is National Pride Month. Davis festivities are traditionally celebrated in May, when UC Davis students are still in school. With most Aggies doing online learning, this year’s celebration is in June. The 2020 event was virtual. Other Davis groups or individuals planning pride activities in June are asked to contact Davis Pride to collaborate. Email admin@davisphoenixco.org. Davis Pride is produced by the Davis Phoenix Coalition, a nonprofit that works to foster diversity, eliminate intolerance, prevent hate-motivated violence and support LGBTQ+ youths. The coalition was founded in the aftermath of a 2013 anti-gay attack on Davis resident “Mikey” Partida. Proceeds from Davis Pride support the coalition’s anti-racism and anti-bullying campaigns, support to LGBTQ+ youths and their families, and outreach with area police departments, churches and schools. To donate, go to https://davisphoenixco.org/ donate. The Davis Pride Committee is looking for stories of pride resilience. If you have one to share, email admin@ davisphoenixco.org. How I Overcame Tobacco Use
M
By Queen Shannon
y name is Queen Shannon Gipson. I’m a black trans woman and representative from the Unique Woman’s Coalition, a black trans led organization here in Los Angeles, California. I want to share my own experience of how I overcame smoking cigarettes. It has been a long road of smoking since I was 17 years old, and now I am 40!
I indulged in my first cigarette from peer pressure. All my friends smoked because you were considered the “cool kid” for doing so, and I wanted in on being part of the IT crowd, so I begin smoking Bidis. A Bidi is a Jamaican tobacco leaf like a cigarette. After smoking a year, I was introduced to Black and Mild cigars. I later learned that a cigar equals 20 cigarettes, so I quit those and began smoking Newport cigarettes. Smoking was so present in my household, everyone around me smoked cigarettes. After 15 years of smoking, I noticed how it started affecting my health. I had a host of bad side effects including my skin getting spotty, bad breath, unpleasant smell on my clothes, stained teeth, it affected my breathing, and weight loss. I told myself, this bad habit isn’t worth all these complications and I begin to look for ways to quit smoking. I first tried quitting cold turkey which was impossible, and then I purchased pills, patches, and gum. I failed them all. Quitting felt impossible. My mother paid for acupuncture which was supposed to decrease my smoking desire. Stressful experiences would increase my smoking. I went from smoking 1 pack a day, to 2 packs per day. That was alarming to myself so after abusing the habit, my health started to decline. I was later diagnosed with a micro Butin respiratory infection from excessive smoking. Anyone would have thought that experience would led me to quit! For about two weeks I was in the hospital on a breathing machine. That was a clear wakeup call, however, I unfortunately didn’t quit. After my hospital stay, I had a plan to put into action and that was to quit smoking. I stopped buying packs of cigarettes and instead I would buy five cigarettes for the day. I begin to train myself to smoke less, and it was working. I started incorporating habits like exercising to increase my breathing, my eating habits increased, and I began to feel so much better. The less I smoked, the more amazing I began to feel inside and out! In addition to feeling physically and emotionally healthier, I was saving thousands of dollars by not

spending money on tobacco products. After 15 years of prayers and family support I took the steps to quit smoking. It felt like the greatest achievement. It is so important to take control of the wellness of your body. Smoking is a mind addiction and once you gain control you can overcome any addiction. Smoking affects you and everyone around you. Today I am 7 years tobacco free and I encourage anyone who has the desire to quit to do so. Your life will only change for the better, trust me, I know mine did. You can start by taking a small step and take the We Breathe Public Intercept Survey at bit. ly/WeBreathe21 and share about your experience with tobacco use. Qualifying participants who complete the survey will receive a $15 gift card. Gift card eligibility will be determined after researchers review all the responses. It may take up to eight weeks for qualifying respondents to receive their gift card.

Midtown Association to Launch an All New “PRIDE, Pronouns & Progress”
T
he Midtown Association, in partnership with WEAVE, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, Faces Nightclub, and Outword Media, is proud to present an all new “PRIDE, Pronouns & Progress” gender inclusion training grant program and series of educational workshops. Available to Midtown and Central City businesses, the free hour-long inclusivity training sessions for grant recipients will take place in a virtual format and focus on three primary topics: educating interested businesses about gender identities, gender rights (in the workplace and beyond) and the importance of pronouns (that go well beyond he/him/his and she/her/hers to include gender neutral or inclusive pronouns, and more). The purpose of the new “PRIDE, Pronouns & Progress” grant program and workshop series is to educate the business community and raise awareness about the importance of nurturing an inclusive environment in Midtown and the Central City where everyone feels welcome, safe, and protected. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and seen when they come to work,
patronize a business or walk through the streets of Midtown Sacramento,” said Beth Hassett, Chief Executive Officer of WEAVE. “When we all encourage people to show up as their true selves and make it easier to navigate their lives, it increases the chance that they will reach out for help if they need it and that the right help will be there for them.” The important new program is being launched to coincide with PRIDE Month (in June) although the inclusivity training will take place after the month-long celebration (in July) with a goal to connect with as many businesses as possible. Beginning June 1, interested businesses in Midtown and the Central City can apply to participate in one of the free, hour-long training sessions via this outwordmagazine.com
www.exploremidtown.org/midtownpride. Also, in celebration of PRIDE month, the Midtown Association designed and produced 3’ X 5’ PRIDE flags, of which a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Sacramento LGBT Community Center. The colorful and vibrant PRIDE flags cost $50 each and will be available for purchase every Saturday in June at the Midtown Farmers Market (at the Welcome Station at 20th & K) as well as online at www.MidtownParks.org. “Diversity in the workplace, including gender identity, expression, and orientation, has been proven to boost the bottom line and protect the mental health of business owners, employees, and patrons alike,” said Patrick Harbison who serves on the Sacramento
LGBT Community Center Board of Directors. “Proudly located in the heart of Midtown and center of Lavender Heights, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center is thrilled to be an active partner on this important gender inclusion project. And we also hope to see the PRIDE flags flying high throughout the business district and in neighborhoods all across the city.” In addition, 37 eye-catching and celebratory PRIDE banners were recently installed along J Street in Midtown that will remain up and on proud display through the month of June. Sacramento Pride Events Planned for 2021
T
he Sacramento LGBT Community Center which annually produces Sacramento Pride, confirmed today that the largescale Sacramento Pride March and Festival will not take place in the traditionally in-person format this June 13-14. The health and safety of our community is our top priority and while we are encouraged by lower COVID-19 infection rates and an increase in vaccinations, the Pride March and Festival require many months of planning and there is still too much uncertainty to safely gather tens of thousands of people as we did prior to the pandemic.
However, all is not lost! We understand how important LGBTQ+ visibility and the opportunity for community to feel connected through Pride is this year after such a long period of isolation. We are pleased to announce that we will be celebrating Pride month in Sacramento with a series of virtual and small scale in-person events produced by community organizations and businesses throughout the region in partnership with Sacramento Pride. The Center is partnering with several public facilities to bathe the city in rainbow lights as public displays of LGBTQ+ visibility, inclusion, and community Pride. The Center will host several limited capacity virtual and in-person hybrid events including a Youth Art Show, a Family-Friendly Drag Show, and the grand opening celebration for its Marsha P. Johnson Center South location. More than a dozen community partners will also host limited capacity events in partnership with Pride throughout the month of June including Sacramento Republic FC Equality Night, Bike Dog Brewing West Sac’s Pride Celebration, OAR Adventures Pride rafting on the American
River, A Sacramento Pride Ride, and many more! While the continued deferment of our large community events is disappointing, the health and wellness of the most marginalized and the safety of all in our community is our priority. We hope that as conditions improve and public health guidance evolves, we may have the opportunity later in the year to come together for a larger community celebration. The Center continues to offer free COVID testing Mondays from 5-7 p.m. A vaccination clinic is also planned in partnership with Sutter Health at the Center and assistance navigating vaccines is available now by calling (916) 442-0185. Assistance to those affected by the pandemic is also available to meet basic needs and support mental health. Community organizations, businesses, or volunteers who are interested in participating in Pride month activities can contact event.schedule@saccenter.org. More details and a full list of events will be updated on sacramentopride.org as they become available.

Book Review: “Rainbow Warrior: My Life in Color” by Gilbert Baker
A
By Terri Schlichenmeyer
t its most basic, it’s just a piece of cloth. A nice poly-blend, perhaps, or a hank of nylon in a faderesistant color.
There are holes in one end to fasten to a pole or rope, but it’s otherwise just a piece of cloth. Yet, people have died for it and, as in the new book “Rainbow Warrior” by Gilbert Baker, that flag could be the fabric of revolution. Even as a small child, Gilbert Baker knew that he was gay. He grew up in Kansas, a child who loved to draw, create, wear fancy dresses, and dream of being an artist. Alas, art wasn’t a career in his parents’ eyes so Baker, as a young man, lied about his gayness and enlisted in the army, where he quickly realized that he was in for years of abuse (at best) or Vietnam (at worst). He “lived in terror” before filing as a conscientious objector; the Army instead listed him as a medic and sent him to San Francisco. It was the perfect accidental gift. “When I got to San Francisco,” he said, “I knew I wasn’t ever going back to Kansas.” Five days a week, Baker worked in an Army laboratory; the rest of the time was his to fall in love, explore his new city, and work on his sewing skills. Stitching became an obsession and by 1977, he was making costumes and banners for demonstrations. When he was asked to make something special for the city’s Gay Freedom Day Parade of 1978, he thought about the rainbow as a flag, and dived right in. While that first flag was a big hit, Baker writes that the symbol didn’t take off quite as much as he’d hoped. Still, it was present in every “street activists” event he was part of, at every parade, and protest. “One pair of scissors” and a mile of fabric could “change the whole dynamic,” he wrote later. It was “a pure act of rebellion…” “Rainbow Warrior” was compiled from several manuscripts that the late author Gilbert Baker left after his death in 2017, a fact that would have been helpful to have, early-on. You’ll be more forgiving of the overly-florid prose, knowing that.
outwordmagazine.com
Aside from that annoyance – one appearing throughout the book – readers may also notice a bit of pretentiousness, lot of snarky fighting, endless drugs, and getting naked in Baker’s narrative, which is likewise forgivable because much of it takes place post-Stonewall, post-Summer-of-Love, pre-AIDS. And thus is the appeal here. Baker was one of the more ferociously involved protesters, by his own account, and his anecdotes are priceless. He gives readers a good first-person look at early efforts for gay rights, and eye-opening, sometimes jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes peeks at life as a young gay man during an uprising. It’s a lively, outrageous look at outrage, in an account that seems not to have held one thing back. That makes “Rainbow Warrior” readable and entertaining and, despite its overly-ornate verbosity, a good look at revolution cut from a different cloth.

Celebrate Pride With Netflix
By Chris Narloch
I
n some conservative quarters, the streaming giant Netflix has taken heat for all of its gay-friendly programming, from “Hollywood” to “Halston” and beyond. Some of its shows are good, and some aren’t, but I applaud Netflix for continuing to court a queer audience. Here are three Netflix shows to enjoy this Pride season.

Lena Waithe and Naomi Ackie costar in “Master of None.”
Master of None The Emmy Award-winning series “Master of None” returns with a third season that chronicles the relationship of Denise (Emmy Award winner Lena Waithe) and her partner Alicia (BAFTA winner Naomi Ackie). Directed by series co-creator and Emmy winner Aziz Ansari, and scripted by Ansari and Waithe, this new season is a modern love story that intimately illustrates the ups and downs of marriage and the characters’ struggles with fertility and personal growth. Season 3 is now available on Netflix.
Charlotte Ritchie and Mae Martin star in “Feel Good.”
Feel Good Mae & George’s complicated love story continues as Mae struggles to come to terms with the ghosts from her past and George tries to reinvent her present. Can they grow together, or will they grow apart? The second and final season of “Feel Good” premieres globally on Netflix this June 4 Special Ryan really needs to get his shit together in Season 2 of this funny and uplifting series from creator Ryan O’Connell about a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to finally go after the life he really wants. Enter Tanner, a fun, flirty dance instructor who charms Ryan despite not being totally available. Our hero also has a gnarly case of writer’s block, and Ryan still hasn’t spoken to Karen since their fight. Season 2 is now available on Netflix. outwordmagazine.com

Queer Music for Pride
T
By Chris Narloch
wo very different queer artists have new music out for Pride, and both releases -- by k.d. lang and David Hernandez -- will be welcome additions to any Pride playlist this summer.
k.d. lang -- makeover This amazing Canadian crooner is celebrating Pride with a new collection of dance remixes of some of her best-loved songs. “Makeover” brings these remixes, made between 1992 and 2000, together for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed about half of the disc’s fourteen tracks, and I especially admired the two remixes by the great Junior Vasquez (for “If I Were You” and “Theme from The Valley of the Dolls.”) Other standout selections include Chris Brann’s remix of “Summerfling,” Ben Grosse’s Club Xanax Mix of “Lifted by Love,” Greg Penny’s take on “Miss Chatelaine,” and the Wild Planet Mix of “Just Keep Me Moving” by Tony Garcia. American Idol’s David Hernandez
26 Outword Magazine
David Hernandez -- ILY Openly gay “American Idol” alum David Hernandez recently released the music video for his catchy new single, “ILY,” which stands for I Love You. The video stars Benji Schwimmer from “So You Think You Can Dance,” a former Mormon who is also openly gay, as David’s embattled love interest, and trans actress Alexa Abraxas as the therapist who is helping them to work through the issues of their relationship. Benji also choreographed the dances in the video. Hopefully, Hernandez will release another full-length CD soon because “ILY” is wellwritten, well-sung, and perfectly produced. You can watch the sexy music video for the song now, at https://youtu.be/I1nieCuxiu8

Amazing Actresses on the Big & Small Screen
I
By Chris Narloch
f you’ve been watching Kate Winslet in “Mare of Easttown” or Thuso Mbedu in “The Underground Railroad,” then you know that the explosion in home entertainment platforms has created many superb roles for women, in fascinating films. Here are four other wonderful women to watch when you have time.
Pink stars in “All I Know So Far.”
Finn Little and Angelina Jolie star in “T hose Who Wish Me Dead.”
Those Who Wish Me Dead Angelina Jolie returns to the big screen (and HBO Max) in this killer thriller about a smoke jumper who has to save a boy from both a raging forest fire and two hitmen who want him dead. The movie’s script is fairly predictable, but director Taylor Sheridan does wonders with it, and the film’s strong cast is equally committed. Jolie is surprisingly believable in the role of a firefighter, and I thoroughly enjoyed “Those Who Wish Me Dead.”
Julianne Moore stars in “Lisey’s Story.”
Lisey’s Story I wasn’t able to preview this new limited series before our deadline, but I’ll watch anything starring the great Julianne Moore. In “Lisey’s Story,” Moore plays the wife of a famous novelist who uncovers his dark inner life after his death. The miniseries is an adaptation of Stephen King’s favorite of all his novels, and you can see it on Apple TV+ beginning this June 4. 28 Outword Magazine
All I Know So Far I already knew that the singer Pink is an extraordinary live performer, but after seeing her new documentary I now know that she is an amazingly positive and progressive mother as well. You don’t have to be a Pink superfan to enjoy this cinematic backstage pass, as Pink balances family and life on the road, leading up to her first Wembley Stadium performance on 2019’s Beautiful Trauma world tour. “All I Know So Far” is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
Toni Collette stars in “Dream Horse.”
Dream Horse “Dream Horse” is one of those true stories that Hollywood usually screws up -- but this time they got it right, creating a feel-good film that truly makes you feel good. Toni Collette plays a Welsh woman who convinced the neighbors in her village to help her breed and raise an unlikely racehorse that turned out to be a champion. Collette is the definition of spunk in “Dream Horse,” and this must-see movie is currently playing in Sacramento theaters.

SF Pride & Frameline45 Present Movie Nights at Oracle Park
By Chris Narloch
F
or the first time ever, SF Pride and Frameline45 will present a ticketed, socially-distanced “Movie Night at Oracle Park” this June 11-12, and the first movie announced for the 11th is the hotly-anticipated, big-screen version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pre“Hamilton,” Broadway hit musical, “In The Heights.”
The home of the San Francisco Giants will be transformed into an enormous outdoor movie theater for those two incredible nights. (At the time I wrote this article, the second evening’s film had not been announced yet, but you can visit the website below for updates.) Frameline is the world’s longest running and largest showcase of queer cinema, and in addition to the historic events at Oracle Park, it will also be presenting Frameline45: The San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, returning to the Bay Area (and online) this June 10-27.
Slated to be the most attended and longest festival in Frameline history, this year’s movies will include a mix of in-person and online offerings -- with the first week presenting only outdoor and drive-in events, and the last 11 days bringing the biggest lineup of new and virtual LGBTQ+ films in the world directly to your home. This year marks the first time that virtual programming will be available to ticket buyers nationwide, and Frameline45 will also offer a Festival Streaming Pass for the first time. Celebrate Pride with Pride in Your Glass!
By Diana Kienle
P
ride Mountain Vineyards is a beautiful winery that delivers on great flavor and texture in your glass. Pride is located at 2000 feet high in the Mayacamas Mountains which separate Napa from Sonoma. Uniquely, the winery and the vineyards are located in both counties – in fact the county line runs through the vines and the caves. This is a gorgeous place to visit. The winery was established in 1991 and the property has evolved since then. Originally, it was solely the vineyards; and today you can enjoy a beautifully situated tasting room and patio with a wide expanse of vines in sight. The wine caves have been an integral part of the hospitality tours and have yet to reopen since COVID. Visits, of course, are by appointment and there are various options to choose from before you get there. Today, you may still even set up a virtual visit after purchasing some wine through the winery. https://www.pridewines.com The beauty is exceptional, and the wines lives up to their surroundings. Pride offers a wide portfolio of varietals leading with their Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and Claret Reserve. You can also enjoy Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and my current favorite Sangiovese. Over the years, I have enjoyed bottles of each and have been purchasing their wine for the last 20 years. Here are the most recent reviews of a few of Pride’s 2018 vintage by Antonio Galloni, owner and author of Vinous (The numbers
represent scores on a 100 point scale): “2018 Pride Mountain Vineyards, Cabernet Franc The 2018 Cabernet Franc is absolutely delicious. Medium in body, with striking aromatic lift, the 2018 is so rewarding right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, mint, red berry fruit, spice and mocha all grace the 2018. Although not super-complex nor structured, the 2018 Franc is the sort of wine that is opened and disappears in an instant. -- Antonio Galloni: 94” “2018 Pride Mountain Vineyards, - Merlot The 2018 Merlot is another very pretty wine in this part of the Pride range. Plump and juicy, with mid-weight structure, the 2018 is gorgeous right out of the gate. Succulent black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice all flesh out effortlessly, with bright acids that keep the flavors lively. The restrained style is so appealing. -- Antonio Galloni: 93” The above wines are a sampling of what you can expect if you visit the winery for a
tasting. Here is a review of a wine from Pride that is listed as available at Total Wine in Sacramento: “2017 Pride Mountain Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is soft, open-knit and inviting. Succulent dark cherry/plum fruit, chocolate, licorice, spice, leather and espresso give this juicy Cabernet tons of appeal. Winemaker Sally Johnson did a terrific job of capturing all the best 2017 had to offer, while avoiding
the pitfalls of this very challenging year. -- Antonio Galloni: 93” The challenging year that Galloni is referring to is the year that the fires threatened many in the Napa/Sonoma area. With our options opening up in 2021, it is a perfect time to get out and visit the wonderful wineries that the Napa Valley has to offer you. Pride is a perfect example of the beauty you can enjoy with wonderful wine in your glass. Enjoy!

Todrick Hall: Returning to Oz in Sonoma County
T
odrick Hall has a sleeve of tattoos dedicated to “The Wizard of Oz” down his arm. Since he was a child he has identified with Dorothy, The Lion, The Tin Man and The Scarecrow and their particular brand of magic. In a way, Hall’s headlining performance at Sonoma County Pride on June 26 will be a homecoming – the theme of the concert is Oz, and Hall says, “It’s going to be very extra!” Since his appearance on Season 9 of “American Idol,” Hall’s career has been on a steady, upward trajectory with albums, tours, and appearances on shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Todrick even performed on the soundtrack for a new Disneyland parade called “Magic Happens.” With great success came exposure, money, and inevitable burnout, “I had been saying yes to everything. I have a huge case of imposter syndrome and it’s hard for me to say no to opportunities.” “I know that a lot of people were super depressed…” The earliest days of the pandemic (think toilet paper shortages) inspired new work from Hall. “I remember rushing to put “Quarantine Queen” out, and feeling like the quarantine was only going to last for a month.” The six-track album was more cathartic than commercial for Hall, “I thought five people were going to listen to it.” To date millions have streamed “Quarantine Queen” and it’s associated videos, “it made a huge impact, and made

people smile and want to get up and dance!” The tumultuous summer of 2020 hit, and mental health began to take a starring role in Hall’s life; “I started therapy for the first time.” Hall, 36, says that seeking help was something that was simply not done in his hometown of Plainview, TX population 22,000. “Typically, people in African-American communities have been known to...not to go there,” making Hall’s experience unique in his family’s history, “there were a lot of things I had been holding onto.” “I cried when I got the keys.” During the pandemic, Hall bought his first home, breaking another generational barrier. “Throughout my lineage, no one has ever really owned their own property, so I decided to change that.” Another reason for the purchase: Hall is admittedly old-fashioned and says he is looking for love; “I’m a man of a certain age, and I want to get married and have kids.” It’s worth noting that Hall takes much of his

relationship advice from Taylor Swift. “Taylor is actually really good at relationships!” laughs Hall at the implication that his best friend - a pop-icon with a discography full of some of the catchiest break-up songs ever - might be a bad person to take relationship advice from. “She is one of the most famous people in the world. And somehow she has found love and feels like she’s appreciated and valued, that makes me feel like I can definitely do it too.” Hall has had a boyfriend for a year and a half. Looking back at the year we thought would never end, Hall says he is doing alright after the additional time off. “It was very helpful and necessary for me, but I’m really excited to get back to life as it were.” That is to say, life on the Yellow Brick Road. “I love being on stage. I love feeling the energy from an audience and I love meeting my fans!” Todrick Hall will headline the Oz Pride concert, taking place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on June 26, performing alongside Ryan Cassata, Morgan McMichaels, and Bright Lights. The show comes near the end of a month of Pride events planned for June as part of Sonoma County Pride 2021. Tickets go on sale June 1st. Visit SonomaCountyPride.org

A Transgender Documentary Double-Header for Pride Month By Chris Narloch
T
his June will see the release of a pair of fascinating documentaries, one showcasing trans athletes and the other about a trans opera singer. Both films will be available for home viewing on the same day.
A still from the documentary “Changing T he Game”
Changing The Game Don’t miss Emmy award-winning filmmaker Michael Barnett’s timely and touching sports documentary focusing on transgender inclusion in sports. “Changing The Game” takes us into the lives of three high school athletes who are all at different stages of their athletic seasons, personal lives, and unique paths as transgender teens. The documentary centers on Mack Beggs, who made headlines when he became the Texas State Champion in girls wrestling -- as a boy. The film also follows Sarah, a skier and teen policymaker in New Hampshire, and Andraya, a track star in Connecticut openly competing on the girls’ track team. “Changing The Game” will be available beginning June 1 on Hulu. Lucia Lucas (foreground) is the subject of the documentary “T he Sound of Identity.”
The Sound of Identity This documentary captures international opera star Lucia Lucas’ historic performance at the Tulsa Opera, as she becomes the first known transgender woman to perform a principal role in opera history. “The Sound of Identity” finds Lucas on the cusp of international stardom, profiling the moment in an artist’s career when everything could fall apart or come together. Showcasing the collaborative process between the singer and her mentor, prolific and renowned composer Tobias Picker, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” comes to life as Lucas, a world-renowned baritone, takes the spotlight and all the pressures that come with it. “The Sound of Identity” will be available June 1 on digital and on demand.

Crystal Head Vodka Celebrates Prideulti-award-winning, With Limited-Edition Bottle ultra-premium Crystal Head
M
Vodka, known for its signature skull bottle, announces its limited-edition Pride bottle in celebration of diversity and equality is back by popular demand with the addition of availability in the 1.75 L size. Crystal Head Vodka’s Pride bottle uses a oneof-a-kind proprietary decoration process unique to the brand. It shines proudly and brightly, inspiring freedom of expression and creative thought. A true collector’s item, 2021 is the last year to purchase this Pride bottle design.
Color plays a vital role in the world, evoking feeling and directly linking creative thinking, often used as a powerful communication tool and a form of expression. A proud ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, Crystal Head Vodka is committed to using its platform as a tool to educate and support, not only from Pride bottle profits, but through continuous, year-round global efforts with partners including Stonewall Sports program, The Test Positive Awareness Network, Kaleidoscope Trust, and Lurie Children’s Hospital Transgender Youth Program, to name a few. To commemorate Pride this year, members of these foundations shared their experiences with and expressed gratitude for Crystal Head Vodka through video testimonials (view HERE). “Our beautifully decorated rainbow bottle is made with pride,” said Dan Aykroyd, Crystal Head Vodka Founder, actor and
musician. “Crystal Head Vodka is the vodka for the creative spirit - we see the world without limitations and provide inspiration to dream, build and make, inspiring freedom of expression and creative thought.” The vodka is filtered seven times, three of which are through layers of semi-precious crystals known as Herkimer diamonds. Crystal Head Vodka offers a clean, clear, and colorless spirit completely free of additives. On the nose it has neutral grain aromas with a delicate touch of citrus. The taste is silky smooth. The Crystal Head Vodka Pride bottle will be available in 750 mL and 1.75 L formats at an SRP of $49.99 and $99.99, respectively. It will be available in select U.S. markets, Canada and Europe from May - July 2021, and is currently available for pre-sale on ReserveBar.
