Jacob Stensberg Named Artistic Director Of San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus
F
ollowing an extensive nationwide search, San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) Executive Director Chris Verdugo and Board of Directors Chair Glenn DeSandre announced the appointment of Jacob Stensberg as the new Artistic Director of San Francisco’s premier choral organization. Stensberg succeeds Dr. Timothy Seelig who will retire at the conclusion of SFGMC’s Season 44 in July 2022. Jacob Stensberg joins San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus from Purdue University’s vocal music department, where he served as Assistant Director of the Purduettes and University Choir, and Director of the Chamber Choir, All-Campus and Community Chorale, and the PMO Kids Choir. “We set out to find an artistic leader who could build on the monumental accomplishments and artistic excellence Dr. Tim Seelig has helped San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus achieve,” said Verdugo. “We are extremely fortunate to attract someone with Jacob’s deep knowledge of vocal arts and musical theater, and proven commitment to his community. His enthusiasm and exuberance are contagious. I look forward to introducing him to the San Francisco Bay Area.” “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to welcome Jacob Stensberg as SFGMC’s next Artistic Director,” adds DeSandre. “His passionate commitment to social justice, advocacy, and the amplification of marginalized voices coupled with his creative artistic vision and choral pedagogy make him the ideal candidate to lead SFGMC into the future.” Originally from Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Stensberg received his Bachelor of Music Education in Vocal Music at Carroll University and went on to receive his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Butler University. Since then, he has been recognized with numerous awards and grants for his leadership in conducting, program development, and intercultural competency and research. Prior to his role at Purdue University, Jacob served the Indianapolis community

through his musical direction of professional theater productions, including The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. At Purdue University, he has been instrumental in amplifying marginalized voices and has been a leader of Purdue’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. Most recently, Jacob conducted research on the way cultural music is shared and its direct impact on complex tasks like empathy, curiosity, and openness. He shared his findings at the American Choral Directors Association Conference in Chicago in February 2022. The Artistic Director Search Committee was designed to represent the diversity of SFGMC’s membership, Board of Directors, and community. For more information visit: https://www.sfgmc.org

San Francisco To Host Largest Display Of The AIDS Memorial Quilt In A Decade
T
he National AIDS Memorial will mark the 35th anniversary of the AIDS Memorial Quilt with an historic outdoor display in Golden Gate Park that will feature nearly 3,000 handstitched panels of the Quilt. The free public event will take place on June 11 & 12 from 10 am – 5 pm each day in Robin Williams Meadow and in the National AIDS Memorial Grove. Expected to draw thousands of people, the display will be the largest display of the Quilt in over a decade and the largest-ever in San Francisco history. “This year’s historic community display will be a beautiful celebration of life and a recognition of the power of the Quilt today as a teaching tool for health and social justice,” said National AIDS Memorial CEO John Cunningham. “The Quilt is an important reminder that the HIV/AIDS crisis is still not over and there is much work to be done, particularly in communities of color, where HIV is on the rise in many parts of the country.” The two-day 35th Anniversary event, presented by Gilead Sciences, will feature 350 12’x12’ blocks of the Quilt laid out on the ground, each consisting of eight 3’x 6’ individually sewn panels that honor and remember the names and stories of loved ones lost to AIDS. Visitors will be able to walk through the display to experience each panel, remember the names, and see first-hand the stories sewn into each of them. Featured Quilt blocks will include many of the original panels made during the darkest days of the pandemic and panels made in recent years, a solemn reminder that the AIDS crisis is still not over. “The Quilt remains an important symbol of hope, activism and remembrance that reaches millions of people each year, opening hearts and minds,” said Alex Kalomparis, Senior Vice President, Gilead Sciences, a long-time partner of the Quilt and its

programs. The company provided a $2.4 million grant to the National AIDS Memorial in 2019 to relocate the Quilt from Atlanta back to San Francisco. More than 100 new panels will be seen for the first time at the San Francisco display. An opening ceremony and traditional Quilt unfolding will start at 9:30 am on the 11th, followed by the continuous reading of names of lives lost to AIDS aloud by volunteers, dignitaries, and the public on both days. Volunteer opportunities and community/ corporate partnerships are available. The public is also invited to bring new panels that can be displayed in a special area to become part of the Quilt. According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, while new HIV infections in the U.S. fell about 8% from 2015 to 2019, Black and Latino communities — particularly gay and bisexual men within those groups — continue to be disproportionately affected. In 2019, 26% of new HIV infections were among Black gay and bisexual men, 23% among Latino gay and bisexual men, and 45% among gay and bisexual men under the age of 35. African American and Hispanics/Latinos account for the largest increases in new HIV diagnoses, 42% and 27% respectively. Disparities also persist among women. Black women’s HIV infection rate is 11 times that of white women and four times that of Latina women. Racism, HIV stigma, homophobia, poverty, and barriers to health care continue to drive these disparities. A special web page at www.aidsmemorial. org has been created for the public to plan their visit to see the display that will be updated regularly with the latest details and information about this historic event.

The Struggle To Help LGBTQ Foster Youth Aging-Out Of The System
L
by Ken Magri, Solving Sacramento
GBTQ foster youth in California have a greater likelihood of being undereducated, unemployed and becoming homeless compared to their heterosexual peers. But the future doesn’t have to look like this. Malasia
When the California State Legislature passed the Fostering Connections to Success Act back in 2010, it helped solve a chronic problem that every foster child faced the moment they turned 18 and became a legal adult. It is called “aging-out.” In the past, newly-turned 18-year olds simply signed a legal document and were left to fend for themselves. Without being compensated, foster parents had no obligation to house of these young adults any longer. Without continued financial support, and with little knowledge of how to access social services, many had to face a harsh new world of independent living. While most youth receive financial or in-kind parental support well into their 20s, foster care youth at the age of 18 have a harder time. “The transition to adulthood is abrupt, stark, inflexible, and typically irreversible,” Atkinson noted. The challenges have been especially pronounced LGBTQ youth who are aging-out. Sacramento’s Malasia Washington is one such example. As a transgender youth who identifies as a woman, Washington entered the foster care system at the age of 14, and aged-out four years later. She was unable to make a smooth transition into adulthood. “Right after I turned 18, my foster dad asked me to leave, so I was homeless for about a month,” Washington recalled. “I was so depressed living on the streets, I turned to drugs for comfort.” The Fostering Connections to Success Act was designed to solve problems like Washington’s by helping aged-out foster children for up to three additional years. This extension also allows NDMs to continue living with their current foster parents, if desired. With regular visits from a supervisor, they could alternatively choose to live with another selected guardian, or they can transition into an apartment or college dorm with another foster youth or former foster youth. But for Washington, it was a hard four-year journey just getting to that extended foster care program. “Even though I identified as transgender, they first sent me to a boy’s group home,” she told Outworld, “and the boys there did not like it.” After enduring two months of physical abuse from them, Washington was sent to live in homes with individual foster parents. A subsequent foster parent, who was Catholic, claimed he wasn’t told about Washington’s sexual identity in advance, so another placement change had to be made. Later Washington was transferred to a group home for girls, where she said there was more understanding. But in those earlier years before the extension, Washington changed residences seven times. It is difficult to determine the exact percentage of LGBTQ youths within that number. But a 2019 study by the University of Texas at Austin found an over-representation of LGBTQ youth within the California foster care system. LBGTQ youth in the foster care system are more likely to be moved from one living situation to another, and more frequently placed into group homes. California is 1 of only 13 states (with the outwordmagazine.com
Washington selfie, 2022
District of Columbia) that has current laws to protect foster youth from harassment and discrimination based on both sexual orientation and gender identity. For her part, Washington felt that prospective foster parents should be told in advance about the gender status of a youth. “It gives the parents a way to say yes or no if it goes against their religious beliefs or anything else,” she said. The policy of California’s Child Protective Services has always been to have discussions with prospective parents to determine whether their home is a good fit. But when Washington was first placed into a home “there were not active efforts to inquire about prospective foster parents’ comfort level or ability to support LGBTQ youth,” said Michelle Callejas, Director of the Sacramento County DCFS. Callejas explained that changed in 2017, when the Resource Family Approval program, RFA, was implemented. “Since implementing RFA, the department makes active efforts to talk with prospective resource parents about how they would support an LGBTQ youth in their home,” said Callejas. “We also began actively recruiting loving and affirming foster homes for our LGBTQ youth.” A social worker Washington had known through the foster care program found her on the streets and reached out, saying there were new programs that could help. Washington was placed in a residential hotel until an apartment could be found. In Sacramento County, twelve specialized social workers work closely with foster care youth to create what is called a Transitional Independent Living Plan, or TILP. But other challenges exist: A University of Chicago report pointed out that many young adults “struggle to find a balance between maintaining their new personal space and warding off feelings of isolation and loneliness.” Washington agreed with that, saying that she also fights off loneliness at times. But she also says she will be ready to leave the program at 21. Now in her last year, she begins studying next month to be an emergency medical technician, and to operate heavy machinery. Washington is happy to see that attitudes have changed among the bureaucrats that deal with LGBTQ youth and prospective parents. Additionally, she feels that there needs to be more safety in the group homes. “I know personally friends who reached out to staff, including me,” she said, “and the staff let them down.” April 28, 2022 - May 12, 2022 • No. 695

“Hello, Molly! A Memoir” by Molly Shannon
T
reviewed by Terri Schlichenmeyer
he audience roars. That’s music to a performer: the best you can ask from a group of people expecting to be entertained is approval for your efforts. Laughter, for a comedy. Gasps for a drama. Tears for a tragedy and tapping toes for a musical, that’s what you want. But remember: as in “Hello, Molly,” the new memoir by Molly Shannon, not all of life’s a stage. For most of her life, Molly Shannon’s mother stood off to one side, a main character with a big role but few lines. She was killed in a car accident when Shannon was just four, as if she made a cameo appearance and then was off the script. But not entirely. With the help of family and friends, Shannon’s father, Jim, raised Shannon and her sister, Mary, to remember their mother and to seize life in every way possible, encouraging his girls to be bold and “wild.” Once, when Shannon was thirteen and her best friend was eleven years old, Shannon’s father planted the idea in her head to hop a plane. The girls ended up stowing away in plain sight on a flight from Cleveland (near their home town) to New York City. He paid for their trip back home. And yet, being Jim Shannon’s daughter wasn’t all fun and games. He was an alcoholic, as was his father and his father-in-law; when he was sober, Shannon recalls parties, spontaneous trips, loving encouragement, and permission to skip school. When he was drunk, she says that she and her sister were always watchful for his mercurial moods and his propensity for a different kind of “wild” behavior. She couldn’t wait to leave home. And yet, through college, a fledgling career, and a popular spot on Saturday Night Live, her father was always there, always a touchpoint for her past but also an irritation; enormously proud of her, but with a short wall between them. It wasn’t until she was well into her adulthood that Shannon realized he harbored a secret, and then everything made sense... 8

You don’t expect a terrible, gasp-worthy accident to be the foundation for a funny story, but there it is, the opening number in “Hello, Molly.” Quickly-quickly, though, author Molly Shannon pulls readers in – somewhat awkwardly, at first, but in the same excited way that your fourth-grade BFF did when there was something important or interesting that you simply had to see. That,
in fact, is the feel you’ll get in the first part of this book: like you’ve been taken by the hand and pulled toward something that was going to make this the best day ever. As you read on, that’s not much hyperbole. If you like Shannon’s work, you’re going to adore this memoir, which appears a lot like her skits: hectic, heartfelt, hold-your-sides hilarious, honest, and always, always arms-wide charming. Bring your sense of humor here – but bring tissues, too. So, take a look, fellas. Here’s what you want in a book, fellas. “Hello, Molly!” is gonna make you roar. outwordmagazine.com

Not All Heroes Wear Capes. That’s It: The Meme, The Truth, The Tagline – In Lavender Heights, It’s Far More Common To Find Our Superheroes In Heels
O
by Chey Mongeon
ne of these iconic heroes is most definitely Taryn Thru-U, the glamorous linebacker who sometimes slums around dressed like Johnathan Cameron. For what seems like eons, Taryn has been gracing the stages, thrones, and venues of the Sacramento queer scene. Whether she’s called you out at a drag brunch, bruised you with birthday spankings or side-eyed you at an event, you never forget meeting her.
Johnathan has been performing as Taryn for nearly eighteen years. She’s been involved in every type of occasion from weddings to graduations to Drag Queen story time. When I asked her what she considered to be her favorite performance, she told me that it was the funeral she was asked to perform at in 2021. “It was really sad and really hard,” he told me. “But I think it was important for us to have some joy that day, so I hope I brought that to everyone.” As Taryn’s 50th birthday approaches it’s the perfect time for us to look back at all of the good Mama T has done in her time with our community. Mostly because he absolutely refuses to allow anyone to draw attention to it lest we all learn that he’s a big ol’ marshmallow underneath all that sass. At the core: Taryn Thru-U was invented for charity. Johnathan has performed for multiple local organizations raising funds and engagement for many local causes. He uses his drag as art to lift up those around him and bring the support that our

community needs. He was a long-time member of the Imperial Court System, serving as Empress 32 and 43 for Sacramento and as President of the Board for 8 years. Through his job at Badlands, he was able to host fundraising events such as The Employee Drag Show and Closet Ball. And when he’s not busy taking Taryn around to raise money, Johnathan dedicates his time to enriching the lives of his clients as a case manager at Sunburst Projects. Those of us that are lucky enough to be close with Mama T know better than anyone how far her generosity goes. She keeps it lowkey, but she makes a point to take care of the people she can. During the pandemic, she made masks by the hundreds and took it upon herself to keep track of all her people that were suddenly stuck at home by themselves. And when restrictions loosened, Taryn poured her time and money into setting up Drag Brunch and outdoor seating areas so that

the gay community would once more have a place to gather when we needed it most. Johnathan is always willing to lend his ear or his time to people in need. He steps in for so many of us who don’t have the ability to go to our parents for advice and support.

Testosterone For Days on the Big Screen
T
by Chris Narloch
estosterone rules at the movies this month, with a bunch of new films featuring swordfights, bromances, and lots of guyflick action. The Northman
We haven’t had a good, bloody Viking film at the movies in many a moon, but this incredibly violent and weird new release from the very talented director Robert Eggers (“The Witch,” “The Lighthouse”) rectifies that fact in a big way. Hunky Alexander Skarsgard plays the adult version of a little boy whose father, the king, is killed (and mother kidnapped) by his uncle at the start of the film. The rest of the movie is an intense action flick that follows Prince Amleth’s revenge. Eggers goes for broke with lots of blood, mud, rugged scenery, and heavy, twisted subject matter that won’t be every moviegoer’s cup of tea. Personally, I enjoy Eggers’ dark visions, and the film has a terrific cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Additionally, any film that features the singer Bjork as a witchy prophetess and climaxes with a fiery, nude swordfight between two hunky guys at the gates of hell is my kind of movie.
The Northman
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The quirky actor Nicolas Cage, who went from winning an Oscar for “Leaving Las Vegas” to purgatory in B-movie hell, is back with his most entertaining, accessible film in decades. “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” gives the talented star one of his most challenging roles ever -- playing himself. The 58-year-old Cage even gets to act with a CGI version of his much younger self -- an imaginary friend who gives him advice about his troubled life and movie career. The film is “meta” in the extreme, and I really enjoyed seeing the actor have fun with his own image. The story involves a bromance between the superstar version of himself that Cage plays in the movie and a rich mobster who also happens to be a super-fan of the actor. Funny lady Tiffany Haddish even turns up as a CIA operative who recruits the actor for a “real-life” role in bringing the mob family down. Cage and handsome Pedro Pascal have a great time with their movie bromance, and the film stays light and funny to the end.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Ambulance
Movie fans experiencing withdrawal waiting for another testosteronefilled action flick from Michael Bay (“Transformers”) can get their fix with this preposterous but exciting-if-you-turn-off-your-brain film about a bank robbery gone very wrong. Jake Gyllenhaal is the crazy mastermind behind the ill-advised bank heist, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays his more sympathetic partner in crime. The pair hijack an ambulance (with a dying cop in the back!) which becomes their unlikely getaway car after the police foil the bank heist. Gyllenhaal is superb as always, this time playing a fast-talking psycho who won’t give up even after everything goes wrong with his plan. I didn’t believe a second of “Ambulance,” but the cast works hard to sell the silly script, and Bay gives action fans the adrenaline rush they crave.
Ambulance
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
Dumbledore’s big secret turns out to be that he’s gay and had an affair with bad guy Grindelwald when they were much younger. Writer J. K. Rowling announced his homosexuality publicly in the past, but this is the first Harry Potter-adjacent film to refer to it on screen. Unfortunately, Potter and friends are nowhere to be found in “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” and Dumbledore’s queerness is referred to in passing but not explored in any depth in the new “Fantastic Beasts” film. Rowling’s revelation about Dumbledore might have had a more positive impact if she hadn’t hurt her brand by making ill-advised public comments about trans folks. The real problem with her latest project, however, is how routine and joyless the movie turned out. A boring Mads Mikkelsen replaces Johnny Depp (as Grindelwald) this time out, which is unfortunate since Depp was one of the best things about “Fantastic Beasts.” Without his star power, the movie feels dreary and overlong. 12 Outword Magazine

The Sacramento Edition of Monopoly is Coming Soon
W
by Chris Narloch
ith Sacramento real estate becoming more and more desirable (and expensive), it’s high time we had our own version of Monopoly, the popular board game in which players compete to acquire real estate and bankrupt their opponents. San Antonio and Palm Springs are just two of the cities that already have custom editions of Monopoly, and later this year California’s capital will receive its own version of the famous board game, featuring local landmarks and well-known neighborhoods unique to our city. I recently spoke with Aaron Green, who is involved with the launch of the soon-to-be Sacramento edition of Monopoly, and this is what he had to say about the game’s salute to the City of Trees.
Which cities already have their own Monopoly game, Aaron?
Top Trumps USA has been doing these custom Monopoly city editions for 25 years all over the world. In 2019, Hasbro granted us the U.S rights. Since then, we have released editions for Brooklyn, Manhattan Beach, Texas Hill Country, Worcester, MA, Greenwich, CT, and Cambridge, MA.
Besides Sacramento, which cities are coming soon?
In the next year we will be launching editions for Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, Kansas City, The Hamptons, Corpus Christi, TX, Pittsburg, and Mainline Philadelphia. The appetite for this iconic game continues to grow and grow and as members of local communities open their editions for the first
outwordmagazine.com
time, they are pleased to see local businesses and attractions that speak to them.
Do you have a date when Sacramento’s game will arrive in finished form?
Monopoly Sacramento will be released in November 2022 just in time for the holiday shopping season. Expect to see the game for purchase in local gift shops, ACE Hardware, and CVS. It will also be available on Amazon and via our website, toptrumps.us
Are the game pieces and community chest cards tailored to the city, as well as the properties?
The game pieces will remain the originals as they are what everyone knows so well. The community chest and chance cards will be 100% customized to Sacramento.
I assume landmarks like Old Sac and the Fab 40s might make it on to our game.
Sacramentans will easily recognize the businesses, parks, museums, and other attractions on this edition. To get a feel for what the Sacramentothemed game board will look like, check out the other custom editions of Monopoly at

Don’t Miss The S.F. Silent Film Festival
Y
by Chris Narloch
ou will have to drive over to San Francisco to attend, but it will be worth the effort to enjoy one of the finest silent film festivals in the world, this May at the Castro Theatre.
The San Francisco Silent Film Festival will showcase over two dozen fabulous features this year, over seven days, including classic movies directed by the likes of Clarence Brown, Erich von Stroheim, Buster Keaton, and Ernst Lubitsch. The Buster Keaton title, “Steamboat Bill, Jr.,” is of particular interest to local film buffs because -- in addition to being a silent comedy masterpiece -- it was filmed in Sacramento, beginning in 1927, a year before its theatrical release. That movie contains one of the most famous and dangerous film stunts ever -- an amazing scene in which Keaton (who directed, cowrote and stars in the movie) just barely avoids being crushed by a falling building façade thanks to a small open outwordmagazine.com
window. Buster Keaton had two of the most soulful, expressive eyes in film history, and “Steamboat Bill, Jr.” is one of his finest achievements, with a brilliant cyclone sequence that rivals the iconic one in “The Wizard of Oz.” Other titles I hope to see at this year’s festival include Lon Chaney in 1923’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” 1922’s “Salome,” and “Waxworks,” a German Expressionist horror classic from 1924 starring Emil Jannings, Conrad Veidt, and Werner Krauss as wax bad guys that come to life. The San Francisco Silent Film Festival will screen this May 5 - 11. For more information and the complete lineup, go to https://silentfilm.org April 28, 2022 - May 12, 2022 • No. 695

“George Michæl Freedom Uncut” Will Be Released On June 22
S
ony Music Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing announced the upcoming premiere of “George Michael Freedom Uncut,” an autobiographical feature documentary narrated by the late Grammy Award winner. “George Michael Freedom Uncut” will be released as a global cinema event on Wednesday, June 22nd. Details of participating countries and cinemas will be listed on GeorgeMichaelFreedomUncut.com. George Michæl
Throughout the film, Michael reveals openly and honestly the two distinct sides of his life: his very public music career and his private personal life that cameras never truly saw. Michael was heavily involved in and dedicated to the making of this documentary before his tragic passing in 2016, making “George Michael Freedom Uncut” an incredibly special posthumous release and a poignant and moving tribute to his legacy. The film delves into the turbulent period after “Faith” leading up to, during and after the making of his “Listen Without Prejudice: Vol 1” album in 1990. At this pivotal period of his life, Michael is able to fight for his artistic freedom and lead the way for others. He meets his first real love, Anselmo Feleppa and navigates both the heartbreak of Anselmo’s early tragic passing from an AIDS related illness and the devastating loss of his mother. “George Michael Freedom Uncut” is also a brilliant reminder of Michael’s outstanding musical genius during the Wham! years and throughout his solo career. The film features timeless duets with 22 Outword Magazine
