National AIDS Memorial Releases Newest Mini-Documentary: “The Black Community & AIDS”
TheNational AIDS Memorial has released its latest mini-documentary, “The Black Community & AIDS,” the seventh film in its oral history project. The Black Community & AIDS” chronicles the personal stories of nearly two dozen survivors and advocates from across the U.S. who are thriving, sharing their hopes and struggles about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and its disproportionate impact on the Black community. important topics the film addresses with interviewees who openly discuss the stigma, shame, and the complex, intersecting and multilayered prejudices that persist today and how so many survivors are thriving, living with pride, dignity and advocating for justice, equal access to care, and an end to the epidemic.
The film opens with powerful words from Phill Wilson, Founder of the Black AIDS Institute, who says, “My grandmother used to say, ‘When white people get a cold, black people get pneumonia.’ And so I thought…if white people are getting the plague, what in the hell are we going to get?”
The 17-minute film can be viewed on the National AIDS Memorial website and its YouTube channel.
In addition to the mini-documentary, viewers can watch individual interview segments which provide candid, deeper conversations with the film participants.
Advocate Tori Cooper says, “To talk about HIV in the Black community in present day, you have to really look at the history of HIV and Black people. Black people have been villainized and stigmatized around not just having an HIV diagnosis but as being pushers of the virus. That stigma that was perpetuated 40 years ago still exists and still impacts the way society thinks about people who are living with HIV.”
Dr. Dázon Dixon Diallo, Founder and President of SisterLove, the first women’s HIV, Sexual Reproductive Justice organization in the southern U.S., “For this epidemic, men opened the door…on the advocacy, on the activism. But what I’m clear about is that it will be the women who close the door on this epidemic. Because once women own it, we change things, and when we change things, we change things for everybody.”
Sharing her truth and powerful story, advocate Sharron Chatman emotionally says, “My mother made me eat off of paper plates and forks and that was hurtful because it was my Mom. Mothers aren’t supposed to reject or feel that way towards their child. Through SisterLove, I began to understand that me being HIV positive was no longer fearful in my life. I wasn’t afraid anymore. I became a warrior.”
These powerful stories are just a few of the
“The Black Community & AIDS” was produced and directed by Jörg Fockele. Chevron, a long-standing partner of the National AIDS Memorial, is the presenting partner, providing major funding annually during the past five years for the program.
"These films really bring to the forefront the power of storytelling and the lessons that can be taught for current and future generations," said Huma Abbasi, General Manager, Health & Medical at Chevron. "Our long-time support for this program is part of our commitment to sharing the very human experiences that have shaped four decades of the AIDS epidemic. These stories demonstrate the devastating impact that continues today, the hope and the work that still lies ahead.”
Community partners include the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Black Brothers Esteem, the New York City LGBT Community Center, Oasis Florida, W.O.M.E.N. Inc., GLAAD, MOBI, GMHC, Frontline Legal Services, Native Son, SisterLove, AIDS Project of the East Bay, Positive Women’s Network and Thrive SS.
“This mini-documentary speaks to the work of the National AIDS Memorial in addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the Black community and the issues of stigma, discrimination and otherism that still exist today, four decades into this epidemic,” said Chief Executive John Cunningham. “We are so appreciative to the survivors and advocates featured in this film who shared their stories and whose work is helping make a difference in changing the statistics and helping to finally curb the disproportionate impact of this epidemic in the Black community.”
Prior to its official release, “The Black Community & AIDS” was exclusively featured at several major film festivals and HIV/AIDS events throughout the country, including Frameline, SF Queer Film Fest, New York City Black Pride, Positive Living Conference, and Atlanta Black Pride. The film was recognized for its powerful storytelling, including being honored with the prestigious Jury Award at SF Queer Film Fest. The film will also be shown as part of the National AIDS Memorial Change the Pattern initiative that is partnering with Southern AIDS Coalition and Gilead Sciences to bring the AIDS Memorial Quilt to the South as a teaching tool with Quilt displays and programming to reimagine the fight to end HIV.
Created in 2015, this multi-year AIDS oral history project helps ensure that stories and lessons of the epidemic are captured, curated, and retained for future generations.
Additional featured films include "Substance Users, the Recovery Community & AIDS", "The Transgender Community & AIDS," "The A&PI Community & AIDS," "Women & AIDS," "The National Hemophilia Community & AIDS," and "The San Francisco Leather Community & AIDS."
About the National AIDS Memorial

Wayne was born just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, where he was raised alongside his four brothers and one sister by a very supportive and loving mother. Wayne very proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was married to Charles “Chucky” Panepento for 38 glorious years - they were quite a pair. Wayne received many awards throughout his lifetime. He was most proud of his Pride Lifetime Achievement Award that the Sacramento LGBTQ+ Community Center Board bestowed upon him for his tireless work fundraising and engaging with programs like Q-Spot, Q-Prom, and the drop-in support center. Being of service was Wayne’s true passion. Wayne was one of kind and will be missed by the many lives he touched. Wayne leaves behind an amazing daughter, two brothers, and a sister, all of whom loved him so very much. In the spirit of Wayne E. V. “Gender Pioneers: A Celebration of Transgender, Non-Binary and Intersex Icons” by Philippa
review by Terri SchlichenmeyerTakea left at the first road, then right and right again. It’s always a good idea to know where you’re going – but then again, getting lost can have its benefits, too. Veering off an easy path
gives you a chance to see things, maybe even something better. You can get all kinds of directions for life but sometimes, as in “Gender Pioneers” by Philippa Punchard, you just gotta step off the road. Dr. James Barry, a highly renowned surgeon, used "built-up shoes and... padding to appear more masculine..." James Allen and Billy Tipton were both married to women before death revealed that they were female. And Mary Read was a girl, until their mother lost her only son...
In 1912, French audiences were thrilled by the talent of a trapeze artist known as Barbette. The lovely Barbette flew over the heads of Parisians solo, gracefully, and the best citizens followed those performances avidly. By 1919, Babette added to the end of the performance the revelation that "she" was really Vander Clyde Broadway, a male performer.
We might think that being transgender is "new" and just "a Western thing," but Punchard has reason to disagree: history is dotted with men passing as women, and women living as men. As Christine Burns says in the foreword, "Trans people are not a new thing."
Some seemed to do it as a means to an end: Ellen and William Craft wore clothing of the opposite sex in order to escape slavery in 1848. Betty Cooper may have worn men's clothing for the same reason in 1771. Neither case, says Punchard, indicates "classical" trans behavior, but we'll never know for sure.
Biawacheeitchish, who grew up to be powerful, wealthy, with four wives, was kidnapped as a young girl and was encouraged by their Native American adoptive father to engage in male activities, perhaps because he'd lost two sons; in another time and place, Biawacheeitchish would've been called a "female husband." Dora Richter, the first woman to receive vaginoplasty, was killed by "a Nazi mob."
In her foreword, Burns says that there are "two awkward challenges" when we talk about trans people in history: were they intersex, rather than trans; and were they people – mostly women – who presented as the opposite gender to gain the benefits of the opposite gender?
The questions demand more study and "Gender Pioneers" offers a launching point.
Open this book anywhere and you'll see that the theme here is serious, but author Philippa Punchard also lends a bit of breeze. There's no certain order to what you'll read, and while the entries reach back to ancient times, they focus more on the past three hundred years or so; each of the articles are short and to-the-point, and the soft illustrations invite browsing. For readers who want a quick read, this works.
Be sure to keep going through both appendices of this book, where you'll find a wealth of further information and dates to remember. Historians and readers of trans history will find "Gender Pioneers" just right.
Kale Yeah, These Chips are Awesome!
by wellyourworld.com
October! It is crazy to believe there are only a few months left in the year. We have some fun times planned, so read on about Well Your World’s YouTube video and a delicious kale chip recipe.
Happy
These tasty kale chips are so easy to make with just three easy ingredients! Plus they have that perfect crunch we're always looking for, and just the right amount of spice from the Well Your World Sriracha and that cheesy flavor from Well Your World Nooch (nutritional yeast). Snack on these healthy kale chips instead of store-bought snacks that are full of processed junk!
Cheesy Sriracha Kale Chips
1 bunch kale, washed, de-stemmed, and coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons WYW Nooch (see link below for recipe)
1/4 cup WYW Sriracha Chili Sauce (see link below for recipe)
Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients and massage together to mix well. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, organize the kale evenly so it's not too thick. Bake for 12 minutes, and try turning every few minutes for extra crispiness. They'll get even crunchier as they cool. Enjoy! Next time you'll probably want to make a double or triple batch, am I right?

Hourglass Winery:Time Well Spent
Diana Kienle, Certified Specialist of Wine
Just recently I caught an article about the best caves in Napa Valley. The very first picture was of the cave at Hourglass. “I’ve been there and have the same picture!” Yet that was not the purpose of the visit, it was for the wine. While the beauty of the valley is breathtaking, the wine, in my opinion, is a good part of the heart and soul of it. The winemaker of Hourglass is Tony Biagi, who continues to produce lovely, svelte wine of all varieties.
Access and arrival to the tasting is a bit scarred. The Glass Fire in 2020 had an impact on the production site, so the great beauty lies underground. Met by Marie outside, we had the pleasure to enter the cave and were seated in what you see below. It was a serene and quiet space where the wine itself spoke volumes. Our hostess took us through the wines, starting with the Sauvignon Blanc and progressing through the lovely reds. The standouts were the plush and velvety reds that make a bold statement of “Drink me!” Yes, each sip of the Cabernet called out for more; and this is a label I would highly recommend. The tasting included Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet as single varietal wines. Each was done with finesse and smoothness that is a calling card of the winemaker.
Tony Biagi is talented and sought after in the valley as winemaker and consultant. I
have tasted his expert touch in many visits to other wineries. One standout that comes to mind is Sinegal where he was the consultant. Another one of the wineries with his deft touch is Amici, which I have truly enjoyed. For more on Tony, here is a link to an article by Jeb Dunnick. Another article, by Antonio Galloni, calls out Tony as his Winemaker of the Year in 2020. Tony’s newest adventure is Patria which is his own winery in collaboration with Kimberley Jones. The wines are really wonderful. I could go on yet there is a message here: Follow the winemaker for really well-crafted wines.
The hospitality at Hourglass was excellent. This is a wonderful tasting that should be on everyone’s list of go-to wineries. To schedule an appointment, click here. The wine is the reward for your time.
Enjoy!

Women Directors Rock the Big Screen
by Chris NarlochNowthat we have all binged “The Bear” and checked out of “House of the Dragon,” it’s time to get back to the business of enjoying movies on the big screen, with two high profile theatrical releases that were both directed by women: “Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Woman King.”
The Woman King
Let me get right to the point with this film. “The Woman King,” directed by the terrifically talented Gina PrinceBythewood, is one of the best movies of the year, a thrilling historical epic, and probably the finest feminist action flick ever directed by an American woman. (On that last point, very few women have been given the opportunity to direct a feminist action flick, which makes this movie even more distinguished.)
Prince-Bythewood is firing on all cylinders here, and so is her amazing star, Viola Davis, who trained like a warrior to play a woman warrior in this true story of a group of ferocious female fighters whose tenacity and fierce skill in battle protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey against their enemies during the 1800s.
The real-life events depicted in “The Woman King” have no doubt been fictionalized and dramatized by its makers, but that is always the case with historical Hollywood films, and I am a film buff before I am a history buff. The movie is reasonably accurate and incredibly rousing, big-screen entertainment, and I loved every single second of it.
Don’t Worry Darling
The actress Olivia Wilde became a director in 2019 with the highly acclaimed comedy “Booksmart,” which probably helped her get this movie greenlit.
I wish I could say that I loved it as much as her previous directorial effort. Unfortunately, “Don’t Worry Darling” is much more ambitious than “Booksmart” but also much less satisfying.
All the elements necessary for a great movie are here: stunning cinematography, perfect production design, killer period costumes, and a superb cast. Everything, in fact, except for a great script.
The always amazing Florence Pugh stars as a seemingly happy housewife living in a pristine planned community in the desert who begins to question her own sanity and the reality of the too-perfect company town she and her husband (Harry Styles) live in.
I loved the ‘50s-fantasy look of “Don’t Worry Darling,” and Pugh and Styles have several hot sex scenes in which Styles looks like he is enjoying some “watermelon sugar,” but the movie unravels as soon as the big twist is revealed near the end of the film.
The script basically repeats the same points about the patriarchy over and over for ninety-plus minutes, and then wraps things up with a rushed, confusing, and bonkers resolution, in the final fifteen minutes.
I have no doubt Wilde will direct more (and better) films in the future, but “Don’t Worry Darling” feels like a temporary big-budget step back in her career behind the camera.

Broadway by the Bay
by Chris NarlochWhilewe wait for the side-splitting Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon” to return to Sacramento this November, there are two must-see shows on stage now in San Francisco, both playing through Nov. 6. Read on for the scoop about the blockbuster Broadway musicals “Moulin Rouge!” and “Jagged Little Pill.”
Moulin Rouge! The Musical
If you were irritated – as I was – by the hyperactive camerawork and editing in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie “Moulin Rouge!” which starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, please don’t let that dissuade you from seeing the sensational, Tony Awardwinning Broadway musical version.
It turns out that the flashy, colorful material is much better suited to the stage, and I thoroughly enjoyed this show, which deservedly won Best Musical at the 74th Tony Awards.
The story concerns an Englishman in 1899 Paris who falls in love with a beautiful singer at the Moulin Rouge even though she is set to marry a powerful Duke who holds the purse strings for the cabaret’s next production.
The plot of “Moulin Rouge!” is somewhat predictable, but the way the musical has been modernized for the stage is surprising and very entertaining, especially when it comes to the score, which shrewdly incorporates snippets of dozens of recent and familiar pop songs.
The audience goes wild as the superb cast belts out a soundtrack that includes everything from “Rolling in the Deep” and “Chandelier” to “Single Ladies” and “Bad Romance.” The show’s costumes and set design are as stunning as the score is popular.
“Moulin Rouge!” isn’t the most profound musical ever created, but it’s a high-octane, audience-pleasing entertainment that is loads of fun. Now playing at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre.
Jagged Little Pill: The Musical
I
seeing this highly acclaimed new musical
after this issue of
some background on director Diane Paulus’ Tony-winning stage version of Alanis Morissette’s iconic 1995 album, “Jagged Little Pill.” The show uses the singer’s music to tell the story of a fictional suburban family dealing with opioid addiction, rape, and other traumas.
The musical’s book, by writer Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Tully”), has little or nothing to do with Morissette’s own life, but it does address many of the themes in her music catalog. Critics have raved about the musical’s originality and its superiority to run-of-the-mill jukebox musicals based on other artists’ music.
“Jagged Little Pill: The Musical,” which is now playing at the Golden Gate Theatre, is not only authorized by Morissette – the singer/songwriter collaborated on it.

Jon Stewart Returns With More Problems
The great Jon Stewart is at least as famous for his activism now as he is for his comedy, after he almost single-handedly got legislation passed recently that gives US military veterans exposed to toxic burn pits in the Middle East access to expanded health benefits. Stewart had to shame the pathetic Senate GOP in order to get the bill to President Biden’s desk, and his anger was palpable and righteous. Stewart’s fire is also in evidence during the season two debut of “The Problem With Jon Stewart” in which Jon examines Americans’ divided perceptions of sex and gender and dives into the facts behind gender affirming care. That episode (“The War Over Gender”) is now available for free via the Apple TV app.

of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam, one of our favorite actors — and one of the sexiest men alive — returns to screens this month with the new Apple TV+ series “Shantaram,” a drama based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts. The highly anticipated series is a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man’s journey to redemption through a country that changes his life. “Shantaram" will make its global debut with the first three episodes of its 12-episode first season on Friday, October 14, 2022, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through December 16, 2022.
Don’t Stop Believin’ In Journey
Stay Fit. Get Tested.
With
the rise of YouTube artists and all of the singing competition shows on TV, overnight fame is a real possibility for many wannabe pop stars these days. Even so, the success of Arnel Pineda, Journey's current frontman, who replaced his idol Steve Perry as lead singer after Perry left the group, is a rock ’n’ roll Cinderella story. Pineda, a Filipino singer born in Manila, was homeless and living on the streets for a time before being discovered via YouTube by one of the members of Journey, who was searching for a new lead singer for the band. Plucked from obscurity, Pindeda went from Journey fan to Journey frontman almost overnight. The rest, as they say, is rock ’n’ roll history. The entertaining 2012 documentary “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” follows Pineda’s story and the band’s evolution, and it will be shown on the evening of Oct. 20 at Auburn State Theatre. The next night, a Journey tribute band will play that same theatre. For more information, please visit: www.AuburnStateTheatre.org

Celebrate Halloween All Month at The Crest
Michael
Keaton was never more maniacally funny than in Tim Burton’s classic 1988 horror comedy, “Beetlejuice,” which is the movie the fine folks at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre have wisely chosen to show during that historic venue's Halloween Movie Party this Oct. 31st. Feel free to dress up and enjoy spooky beverages at this 21-and-over event, but if you can’t make it that evening, the theatre is screening half a dozen other horror hits during October, to get you in the mood for All Hallows’ Eve. The titles being shown on the big screen this month include: “Interview with the Vampire,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Hocus Pocus 1,” “The Lost Boys,” and “Edward Scissorhands.” For dates and more information, please visit https://crestsacramento.com/events
