01 Re-habitation, an Alternative to Rapid Privatization

Harvard GSD 2019 Fall Option Studio-The Agency of the Urban Ensemble: Community, Action, City Instructor: Alex Wall Site: Novi sad, Serbia Area: 45 ha High Pass in Studio, Individual Work In the former Soviet empire, the collapse of Communism created an opportunity for the victims of one failed utopian ideology to find another. The evaporating Soviet system left an ideological vacuum to be refilled. Situated in the most depressing industrialized area, the project argues for the benefits of incremental privatization. The general public would be convinced that private entities can perform many of the services that have for a long time been provided by monopoly government entities. How can a defunct area activate as a Mid-scale mediator, by proposing a model based on housing and social enterprises? The project further discovers the spatial uniqueness of the industry and seeks to involve the inhabitants in the development of their district through new housing. Thereby to create a new community belonging where the collaborative civic place and individual living space can be reorganized, transforming their view of the city.

Three periods constitute the urbanization of the city of Novi Sad. The city never finds its perfect housing model and every period leaves its mistake to the next period. In 1945, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugosptinlavia was proclaimed and the city built its infrastructure as priority. Scale#1: Phasing Strategy How to transform a defunct former industrial area? The proposed urban design phasing strategy consists of three phases. In the first phase prototyped solutions will serve as an attraction to the area. In the second phase, I adapt the existing areas through new buildings and functions. In the last phase the area will serve as a large-scale test for a modern settlement.

The goal of the project is to develop a neighborhood where contemporary workplaces and avant-garde CLT housing projects come together as a sustainable alternative to privatization and suburban development. The final layout advocates for mixing social activities with production and living. It presents an overall concept for how the site can be connected to the city and infrastructure, strategies for programming and landscape features. The transformation process is based on a flexible and adaptable scheme that is open for a long-term development that can go in many different directions.

Harvard GSD 2018 Fall Urban Design Core Studio -The Urban In-Between in Transition Instructor: Rahul Mehrotra, Stephen Gray, Dennis Pieprz, Linda Pollak, Fu Yun, Michael Manfredi Cooperation with Yamei Chen/ Role in the team: design strategy, modeling, presentations and drawings Site: Boston Area: 97 ha Nominated Platform 12 East Boston's population is ethnically diverse, reflecting the immigrants from around the world who moved there. Since the early 1900s, immigrants have been a part of the East Boston community. Suffolk Downs, an underutilized horse racing facility closed in 2018, it has been separated from the community for decades and plans include reconnecting it to the adjacent neighborhoods. The design thesis is defined as Can an industrial land transform into productive land that can provide educational opportunity for immigrants and promote aggregation of adjacent communities? This project introduces two spines of public space and a continuous topography that connects not only the adjacent communities but also existing ecological nature system on the site, in order to create a new urban emergence for the ethnically diverse area of Suffolk Down.

The horizontal spine allocates in the middle of the site to provide equal opportunities for the communities. The vertical spine allows social aggregation and served as a surrealist racial collection of urban diversity that in fact reflects the true nature of the local neighborhood.

Surrealist Racial Collection The post-industrial land in East Boston is proposed as a giant exhibition of urban best practice-a sort of collection of global found objects that come from different home countries of the people inhabiting the adjacent area.

03 Mumbai Koliwada

Harvard GSD 2018 Spring Option Studio-Extreme Urbanism Informal Settlement Redevelopment with Sanitation Infrastructure Instructor: Rahul Mehrotra Site: Mumbai, India Area: 3ha Aga Kham Program for Islamic Architecture In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), indigenous settlements such as koliwadas are at a risk of losing their cultural identity and space in the city. The aspiration of the koli community to upgrade their settlements has reached an impasse, as the result of a lack of formal documentation which can establish land rights. This has restricted them from upgrading their settlements, and led to a deterioration of the physical, social and cultural fabrics of the koliwadas. As a consequence, the settlements have become encumbered with congested living conditions, and are in dire need of essential sanitation infrastructure, which could become an enabler for a transformative process in bringing about dignity and improved health in the community.

The project speculates about a hybrid form of the new Koliwada settlement combined with productive landscape and infrastructure in a shifting and dynamic context. Work on two parallel time frames, which based on the assumption that eventually the mangrove will grow on the coastal line and the Koliwada integrates new settlement along the road so that everyone is comfortably accommodated.

Seasonality and Edges This site contains a historic Portuguese fort which is currently occupied by informal settlements and the Kolis- a fishing community that has a long lineage and are among the original settlers of the islands of Bombay. The site has a clear and an organized community group that would serve as the constituency group for the studio. It is bound on the western and northern edges by water, as well as a major city thoroughfare on the eastern edge.

Access to potable water and waste disposal systems is necessary for the health of our cities and their inhabitants, and architecture as a practice can reach far beyond individual buildings to more systemic thinking about infrastructure and civic policy. The challenge is to find socially and culturally appropriate solutions that can be intelligently integrated into everyday lives, especially in vulnerable communities.

The city of Mumbai is origin from seven islands, where Koliwada were settled by the water so that they can have a reliable resource to relay on. However, because of land reclamation, some koliwada lose their water resources. The Railway is the main mobility mode for citizens to travel but it provides fast transit in a north-south direction. The fishing village by the sea lost the convenience and advantage of public transportation compared to the inland residents. The design issue is defined as how can Koliwada redevelopment free the land they occupied and become a new asset to the city. And how new Koliwada settlement can be embedded with upgraded infrastructure and productive landscape.

Whether it's redeveloping dying malls or re-inhabiting dead big-box stores or reconstructing wetlands out of parking lots, the growing number of empty and underperforming, especially retail, sites throughout suburbia gives us actually a tremendous opportunity to transform the leastsustainable landscapes into more sustainable places. Suburban expansion to cheap land has helped generations of families enjoy the American dream. But increasingly, the savings promised by drive those savings are wiped out when considering the transportation costs. Not only the affordability question but also public health issues and carbon footprint is one of the unintended consequences of building the suburbs. Thesis: How to urbanize the suburbs by introducing urban grids, to create the middle landscape in between nature and urban?

05 Murazzi, Regeneration under the City Wall Museum for Local and Tourists in Turin (Personal research and design / / Spring 2016) Site: Turin, Italy Study site: 36 ha/Project site: 1300m2 Rethinking the Interface - Inserting Layers of History The construction of the Murazzi area dates back to 1830 when construction began along Corso Cairoli and long-Po Cadorna. The area was not completed until 1973. The term Murazzi or “Muri” refers to the embankments, which is 1.2km running along the River Po. With the construction of the Murazzi, Turin became the first Italian city to embrace the French “way of life” along the river. Up until the 1940s the embankments lining the Western bank of the river were utilized by the local fisherman as a shelter for boats, however over time the area became run down and neglected. During the seventies the Murazzi saw a second transformation into a notorious nightspot for young people until its closure in 2008, a decision made by the Turin City Council, due to the increasing level of violence in the area. The project renovate the old city wall through activating the

Dawn Austria created a mobile wall to save the city from floods. Two components make these technology succeed, one is the foundation that constructed around the entire riverbank, another is removable slats that are fitted on the vertical pillars to complete the wall. This new technology break the interface of historical and modern. Murazzi was given the opportunity to regenerate. The dark, forgotten corners of the city, which calms dowm in the historic rivers are ready to assimilate into the modern city.

The city grid is planned closely related to the river: main roads are perpendicular to the river, which makes the river and embankment embrace high accessibiliy from urban jungle. When I observed the site within the city context, it is obvious that plenty of education institutions are located along the river, especially institutions for youth. Meanwhile, it is close to the city center, commercial street "Via Roma", and some must-visit destination for tourists.

Old and New The reservation consists of the outer wall, two arches, and a wall enclosing the atrium. New wall system consists of two directions: perpendicular to the river and horizontal to the river. In this way, the relationship between architecture and environment is strengthened.

Different scales of spaces including public space and service space are shown in the sections. The scale of arch wall varies with the degree of publicity. Two double height spaces are located: one is the lecture hall underneath two remaining arches, the other is located along the murazzi wall.

Atrium, New Part of the Waterfront System For general activity, the atrium can be used as rehearsal room by local artists or as night club by youth. For particular event, it also own the potential to become a place that undertake common activities, such as the backstage of the Turin Jazz Festival performing on the riverbank.

Architectural Transition New walls are generated as a soft intervention inside the embankment, echoing the ancient city wall with a similar architectural language.

06 Swirling the Edge

Meditation Club above Food Market in Causeway Bay Spring 2017 Study area: 30 ha, Project area: 1600m2 Cooperation with Zilu He/ Role in the team: reasoning, modeling, design and drawings Site: Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, China. 'Through the transparent walls, people slowly sink into endless meditation or gathered in a silent dialogue. Human beings are forever out of touch with the outside world. Only when the sun rises can they be excited about a while ... They are surviving humans who will witness the destruction but will not be able to accelerate or delay it. They will eventually be alone.' In the work of New York of Brains, Superstudio describes the process of constructing a new city after the explosion. The new city comprised of 10 million brains that slowly sink into endless meditation or gather in silent conversations where people are out of touch with the outside world. On the basis of the work of Zaha, three types of massing are proposed. the project understand an architecture that consists of diverse units of whom different identity can be read by people. Each meditation space is the unit that together forms the matrix. Prototype of meditation space is generated by controlling the X axis and Y axis.(X=radius of the control curve, Y=Number of the control curve). Through these techniques, light and space were modulated between soft and hard thresholds.

From Zaha to a New Understanding of Hong Kong The work of Peak Leisure Club by Zaha Hadid Architects is constantly sketched in the context of Hong Kong. It is a set of representation of subjective expression. With arbitrary force and accidental overlay, Zaha imposed an extremely complicated environmental order.

In the drawing, the energetic spatial mobility and flexibility offers tremendous potential for the unlimited urban expansion. The project of Swirling Edge of Common Custom Space starts with the interpretation of Peak Leisure Club, aiming to understand the secular environment of the city thus construct the interface between spiritual space and secular life. The representation of Causeway Bay were drawn on the basis of Zaha's work. Warm color represents the chaotic and messy condition of the street and activities in the ground floor level of Mong Kok. Plan of fractured zoning were enlarged to express the flexible and unexpected urban expansion. The black building facade as back ground to illustrate the unstoppable growing of density.

Closeness and Isolation Messy colors in Zaha's drawing indicates that the same function distribute on different floors, as a result, the horizontal continuity was subverted and people can walk from one place to another only through elevator.

High Density The repeated vertical warm color squares were constantly sketched in the context of Hong Kong depicted a high-density urban living scene. Hong Kong is one of the city of highest density in the world in accord to the analysis of the block.

The Decreasing Public Space The public space is broken into fractured geometries in Zaha's drawing and they penetrate each other in the urban environment, implying human damage to the landscape. Typology of public space shows its decreasing trend.

Explosion and Negative Space In order to deconstruct the complex and superimposed urban environment in Hong Kong, daily scenes in the city were sketched. Static analogy and dynamic analogy were used to extract the feeling when flâneur walk through different places. Explosion: we draw analogy between the feeling of coming out from the subway station to the street and blowing balloons. Crowded city make flâneur hard to breath, going out of the subway station, going up by the escalator, walking to the street and finally arrived at open space, flâneur have never stopped being squeezed. Negative Space: The total mass of air in the oral cavity and the balloon remains the same, just like the positive and negative space in the space.

In the work of New York of Brains, Superstudio describes the process of constructing a new city after explosion. The new city comprised of 10 million brains that slowly sink into endless meditation or gather in silent conversations where people are out of touch with the outside world. Rivera sets an example as a community member who used his talents to tell the stories of the working class. He portrayed the working class combined with elements of the Mexico city, illustrating that society was characterized by class divisions. Class division in architecture, form follows the function, as class division can be read in the form of industrial architecture. Brooklyn is a populous city as well as a thriving hub of postmodern art, with former industrial and rail land occupying large located area. Nowadays, some of the former industrial sites have been converted to new functions such as Austin warehouse and Domino sugar refinery. The deisgn concept is through the operation of building block,

Insperation Lucio Fontana breaks the space by cutting the canvas. By doing so, two dimensional space is convert into three dimensional. In the last years of his career, Fontana became increasingly interested in the staging of his work in the many exhibitions that honored him worldwide, as well as in the idea of purity achieved in his last white canvases. In the project of Slicing Facade of Industrial Memory, I selected typical industrial pitched shape roof and practiced Fontana's concept.

Dialogue and direction

Three levels of industry was deconstructed. The ground floor level is studio with doors open to courtyard, the first floor level is individual dwelling unit and the roof top level is inter-related exhibition space. The order and sequence of each floor varies from each other. Studio possess the circulation toward outdoor and between each other, dwelling units' circulation is block indoor and roof top exhibition is characterized by different directions of roof.

Roof as Interface to Express Industrial Indentity The pitched roof aims to evoke collective memory of the Brooklyn industry. It provides artists with unique living environment, at the same time taking on the role of exhibition in the gallery. Each unit is developed from 4m*9m*11m module, mixed with office at street level. The ownership of the ground floor commercial is open to the developer. The linear blocks fulfill the city facade, at the same time it encloses a semi-public green area, to work as a seed bringing green life to the neighbourhood.

Allowable Massing The building volume consists of 12 units, each of them 4m*9m. The property line aligns to the neighbor, to fulfill the city façade.

Commercial Corresponding to the neighborhood’s prevailing housing type, the first floor is non residential, including the airbnb kitchen, studio and gallery.

Industrial Footprint The pitched roof aims to evoke collective memory of the Brooklyn industry.

Windows are opened to the semi-public courtyard, to meet the lighting demand and privacy need of the residential floor.

Skin Unified skin makes the city oriented interface simple, and pure, in order to reduce the intervention process of environment.

Courtyard Courtyard is enclosed by the row house, which is not only used by the artists but also to fill the shortage of green space in the neighborhood scale.

08 Agricultural Campus

Politecnico di Torino Spring 2015 Urban Design Studio Individual work Instructors: Alessandro Fubini, Emanuela Saporito Site: Moncalieri, Italy. Area: 6 ha Henri Lefebvre describes the three stages of urban transformation as commercialization, industrialization, and urbanization. In the early time, the exchange of products prevailed between neighbors even before the appearance of currency. With the development of technology, the industrial production accumulated and superimposed on the growth of the commercial exchange. There is a constant risk in Europe, that the former industrial plants once around or between the cities were abandoned and now present a diffused type of urbanization. In the majority situation, industrial plants were built on the periphery of the city where is not too far away from the city center to make sure the labor force can be accessible enough to run the plants. The edge of the liberal economy that once has been eroded by industrialization has no chance to escape from its fate - to be trapped in the gap between cities and turn to an Implosive Edge over time. The reasons are, on the one hand, that the demand for labor force made it hardly expand outward, on the other hand, that high land price made it hardly expand inward. Inevitably, it forms various footprints in accord with the accumulation of capital and the process of industrialization.


ISSUE: Can the interface on the border of city knits agricultural land with urban context, to explore the potential of natural resource? Moncalieri is a town of approximately 58,000 inhabitants and about 8 kilometres directly south of downtown Toino(to whose province it belongs), in Piedmont, Italy. In addition, it lies between the railway system connecting Torino and Genova, which used to be the industrial triangle together with Milano. The project starts with the observation of the coexisted condition of decreasing agriculture fabrics and growing urban fabrics within the city. These two dominant types form the urbanism across the town. The site Altissmo is a former industry.

It serves as a hinge connecting urban fabrics on the north and agriculture fabrics on the south, and as a east-west connection that provides opportunity for improving east-west road. The project seeks to capitalize on this fragile border and sees an opportunity to retool dated brownfield by designing new dynamic and flexible interface between agriculture fields and urban context. For this reason, Three types of farm strategy 1 has been proposed, expecting to emphasize natural resource so favoring socialization.

1: Experimental field The Experimental field mainly concentrated in the campus with primary function to assist teaching and promote technology research. Farm+Building = #3.5circuits The prototype discusses how building enclose different open space in regard to the type of farm and how these prototype can be used in the larger area around the site. In the practice, farm and buildings together assume the responsibility of production, research and recreation. The size of each block is 45m*45m, with 15m as the width of building and 30m*30m of the open space.

To bring new vitality to the brownfield and make it prime for development, three zones are proposed: the 1st zone as a ‘production zone’ consists of market and experience factory, aiming at selling farm products and having locals involved in multiple public activities within the campus. The 2nd zone as a ‘technology incubator’, consisting of teaching building and research center. The 3rd zone as an ‘inhabitant’ that including outdoor sport, gym and dorm.


Three farms shape the new face of the campus. In the campus, students can have intimate interact with farm and different types of courses become possible, including field class, theoretical lesson and experimental class. It is a campus where agricultural products can be grown, picked and stored temporarily before send to the laboratory.

Agricultural Pattern as Architectural Language The mixture of the three kinds of farm constitutes the base of the campus. The zoning is related to the type of farmland as well as the intention of proposal of the three kinds of farm.

b-The campaign of transforming the New York’s street started as a quick reaction to several social issues brought by the economic crisis and Supporters Implementers 911. c-Calculation Part A. For Landcover, rangeland is known as suitable habitat for Kit Fox, Urban area as the lowest suitable level for kit Fox and water has a low necessity for Kit Fox. The level was given as follows: Forest=4, Rangeland=5, Water=1, Urban=1, Wetland=2, Barren=2, Agricultural=3, Riparian=2 Part B. Even though Kit Fox prefer natural environment, there is some Kit Fox found in the urban area, so the Urban area is also taken into consideration but as a negative factor. The urban area is divided into three main categories: the residential, the commercial/mixed urban and Industrial/transportation. The last one is viewed as the most negative factor for Kit Fox. So reclassification scores were given as: residential and commercial=1, industrial=2
