Ovalhouse Summer Season 2017

MAY – AUG 2017

Welcome

much-loved antidote to grief My World Has Exploded a Little Bit; Jamie Wood’s journey of selfdiscovery through the Welsh hills I Am a Tree; and Lost Dog’s re-write of Romeo and Juliet exploring love, loss and longevity Juliet and Romeo’s Work in Progress.

Many of this season’s plays explore migration and what it means to ‘belong’. Home invites audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities into an immersive experience of unfamiliar landscapes; Bound explores the dark underworld of people trafficking; and One Item Only follows one boy’s journey seeking refuge from his troubled homeland. Koko Brown’s WHITE offers a different perspective: what if you’re ‘home’ and everyone keeps asking you where you are from?

For something completely different, join us for an off-site adventure in a derelict chapel to witness visual spectacular Trinity exploring the depiction of women in religious iconography.

Two powerful new plays examine the pervasive nature of violence in our society: The Believers Are But Brothers explores how young men use the internet to enact violent fantasies; Kieran Hurley’s new play An Injury explores violence and the harm that we do to one another.

A season about migration, violence and loss, but these works are far from bleak. Across the season our artists present you with challenging visions of our present as well as hopeful visions of our future and invite us to reflect on where our own journey will lead us.

Our final theme of the season brings together three plays about loss: Associate Artist Bella Heesom’s

Ovalhouse Downstairs TUES 23 – SAT 27 MAY 7.30PM ALL ABOUT YOU presents

My World Has Exploded a Little Bit by Bella Heesom | directed by Donnacadh O’Briain Bella Heesom’s debut play is part true story, part farcical performance lecture. It tells a deeply personal story of loss and love, through a darkly comic 1 -step guide to bereavement. Mixing tender intimacy and unflinching honesty with hard-hitting philosophy, clownish silliness and an enchanting live piano score, it takes the audience on a powerful emotional journey, shot through with jet black comedy.

Sublime.

Ovalhouse Downstairs WEDS 12 – SAT 15 JULY 7.30PM Ovalhouse, HOME and Transform present

the Believers are But Brothers “ Written Javaad Alipoor | co-directed by Javaad Alipoor and Kirsty Housely

We live in a time where old orders are collapsing: from the postcolonial nation states of the Middle East, to the EU and the American election. Through it all, tech savvy and extremist groups rip through twentieth century political certainties.

A very special artist, and a very strong voice. Madani Younis, Artistic Director, Bush Theatre

Amidst this, a generation of young men find themselves burning with resentment; without the money, power and sex they think they deserve. This crisis of masculinity leads them into an online world of fantasy, violence and reality. Writer and theatre maker Javaad Alipoor spent time in this digital realm, exploring the blurry and complex world of extremists, spies, journalists and fantasists. This bold one-man show weaves together their stories.

Ovalhouse Downstairs TUES 18 – SAT 22 JULY 7.30PM Ovalhouse and Permanent Red present

an injury by Kieran Hurley | directed by alex swift

Morvern wants to get up and walk away from this desk. Danny wants to write something revolutionary. Joe wants to protect what good we still have left. And then there’s Isma. We don’t know much about Isma. We know she’s twelve. We know she speaks only Arabic. We know she’s here. And we know she’s watching.

Acutely observed yet ferociously powerful storytelling... an absolute highlight of the Edinburgh Fringe.

#### The Independent (on Heads Up)

Here, in this room, four speakers pick through the fragments of four shattered lives.

After their award-winning collaboration on Heads Up, writer Kieran Hurley (Beats, Hitch) and director alex swift (How to Win Against History, Mess) team up once again to create a thrilling new play about violence, love, the distance between us, and the harm we do to each other.

Ovalhouse Downstairs THURS 27 – SAT 29 JULY 7.30PM Ovalhouse, Beaford Arts and Jamie Wood present

I am aTree Written and performed by Jamie Wood directed by Jamie Wood, Wendy Hubbard and George Ramsay

When I am still for any length of time, someone finds me and tells me about their life. My girlfriend says this makes me like a tree that all dogs want to piss up. Slow man tree.

This isn’t wacky for wacky’s sake. It’s oppositional and fierce and idealistic.

####

Granddad taught me what I know about listening. And now there’s a gap in my landscape. Last year I walked 1 0 miles back to where my grandparents were born, to look for what I’ve lost – a homemade pilgrimage, returning to roots, slow motion time travel.

WhatsOnStage (on Jamie Wood’s previous show O No!)

The show is something else entirely. A dance party with ghosts, in a forest, in a theatre. A hopping ritual. An invitation to drink deep: to face the shadows that growl on your insides and laugh big.
