SEPT – DEC 2017
WELCOME
hunts and The Sex Workers Opera takes us on an honest and joyous journey into the world of the sex trade. Our FiRST BiTES programme continues to experiment with the unexpected, including Nikah, which tells the story of forced marriage from a male Pakistani perspective. Our Associate Artist Koko Brown explores what it means to be mixed-race in her new play WHITE. Meanwhile, we begin the search for a new team of young people (18 – 25) to spend a year with Ovalhouse as Young Associates (see page 28).
In advance of the construction of our new theatre in Brixton (opening 2020, see page 33) Ovalhouse will bring revolutionary entertainment to the streets of Brixton with the second year of our Brixton City Festival (see pages 4 – 5). Our autumn season at Ovalhouse explores the ‘unseen’ people in our communities: children in care, whistle-blowers, sex-workers, transgender people and asylum seekers. These groups or individuals are sometimes described as ‘hidden’ or ‘invisible’. No one’s invisible. Often people remain unseen because their stories are uncomfortable to hear.
All of this alongside our new family programme which includes The Hippo that Can Never Be Caught (the only character who is really invisible), a transgender cabaret for children Princess Charming and our Christmas Show about unexpected friendship Breaking The Ice.
This season, we give voice to those who are unheard. Louise Wallwein presents her bold and unflinching production about growing up in care, Glue; Angela Clerkin returns to Ovalhouse with The Secret Keeper, a dark and unsettling adult fairy-tale about whistle-blowers and witch

Glue Written and performed by Louise Wallwein Directed by Susan Roberts Live music by Jaydev Mistry Movement direction Benji Reid Handsome Louise Wallwein, raised by nuns, raised hell in the Queer scene for the last 30 years!
“
Wallwein… blends gritty dialogue with poetry, which is both appealing and immediate. What’s On Stage
Glue is a comedic live art performance fuelled by rhythmic poetry. It’s a show about getting to grips with our family relationships and therefore our identities.
”
Louise grew up in the care of nuns from the age of nine. Can you relate to that? Glue is a frank and gripping true story of her first meetings with her birth mother, three decades after being put up for adoption. The world as she knew it was turned upside down, and this is how she learnt to fight.

We can’t help putting together what’s been lost or destroyed. Our brain takes scraps of information and turns them into stories that we think makes sense. Fragments tells the lost myth of Cresphontes, a boy brought up to avenge his murdered father and brothers. Piecing his story together will take you on a journey through the fragments of your own life: receipts, childhood memories, things half heard. Melding ancient myth and modern neuroscience, Fragments asks whether the way we see the world is really how it is.

He is being forced to marry, but he doesn’t know who she is, or what this will mean for him. An inspiring one-man story of endurance, empowerment and the realisation of the self.
