NIKE OSHINOWO SPEAKS EXCLUSIVELY TO EX BEAUTY QUEEN

OVATION ABOUT LIFE, LOVE AND TURNING 55 Interview: Michae Effiong Photo Shoot: Dragan Mikki

W

hatever time of the day and which ever part of the world you meet Adenike Asabi Oshinowo popularly known as Nike Oshinowo, you cannot but be wowed. Her beauty is that real and timeless. Raised in Ibadan and London, the lady once described by a celebrity journal as the sexiest woman alive has moved from being a beauty queen, restaurateur, fitness expert to pageant organizer, traditional title holder, wife and mother. Ever since she entered our consciousness in the early 90s as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 90/91, she has continued to be a newsmaker. Though she hardly speaks, any time she does, she never fails to impress with her intellectual depth and candor. In this special interview to mark her 55th birthday, Nike Oshinowo opens up about life, love and future plans.

What has been happening to Nike Oshinowo, you just dropped off the radar

I don’t know about dropping off the radar (Laughs heartily) I needed to figure out where my true priorities laid. I had these two precious gifts I had been given - My Twins ; and I very much wanted to be part of their lives: fully. Being a ‘celebrity’ mum or a Society mum or even a ‘Yummy Mummy’ just didn’t have much appeal to me. As in all other situations, something’s gotta give . In my case what went was the partying and the social butterfly aspect of my lifestyle! Is it true you now live permanently in the UK. If so what happened

My twins now attend Prep School in the UK and I want to be with them. So I commute. I essentially live in both countries -Nigeria and the United Kingdom. It made for a heck of a lot of flying Pre COVID-19. Like everyone else, I’m having to reevaluate our Pre pandemic lifestyle and make the necessary adjustments. It is what it is. Many years after you were a

beauty queen, you tried to revamp the Beauty Pageant business. Tell us about that experience

Yes I ran the Miss Nigeria Pageant for a period of three years when its parent company- The Daily Times of Nigeria was taken over by Folio Communications. During my three year stint, we were able to successfully rebrand the pageant and also successfully organized two shows. That period remains the most hectic period of my life. My team and I toured Nigeria in a bid to reintroduce the Miss Nigeria brand to the Nation. We garnered a phenomenal amount of support from both the people and the Nigerian Press which eventually translated into sponsorship deals. But seriously, I don’t think I slept a wink in those three years ! Who are your role models and why

Sadly, I no longer look for or look to or even believe in role models. We’re all such imperfect and complex beings... Growing up my role models varied from Diana Ross and Princess Diana to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , Mother Theresa and my mother .Then you

I love being 55. I love that I’m being given the opportunity to live a completely different life from what I had before. It is a huge privilege and I’m beyond grateful.

read thier Biographies and disappointment sets in. Now I find inspiration in everyday people and everyday occurrences. In the simplicity of nature and creation. Even in my 7year olds. Their adaptability and can do spirit. I’ve learnt a lot from them. It’s rather humbling.... I am told you will be 55, wow. How does it feel to be just 5 years away from 60

I’m 55 in December. In fact , by the time this publication is out I’ll officially be 55years old ! I love being 55. I love that I’m being given the opportunity to live a completely different life from what I had before . It is a huge privilege and I’m beyond grateful.

8

I look forward to what 60years of age brings. Hopefully it will include good health and an abundance of Grace. What are the key things you have learnt

from life at 50

Just one very big lesson: That it’s ok to do it My Way !I’ve torn up the rule books and I’m just living the way I choose.

This is no flattery, you look stunning for your age. Let us into your beauty secret.

The first thing I noticed when I saw the pictures from the photo shoot was how much ‘lockdown weight’ I was still carrying. And I’m ok with it.

The secret is : There is no secret. I often sleep in my makeup because I’m too tired to wash my face before I fall into bed at night! I eat all the things I’m not supposed to albeit in moderation. I live simply and enjoy my life. Fortunately that involves exercise-a fair amount of walking and jogging. In Lagos I jog across the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge at 6 every morning. In the UK, I walk and run in Ashdown Forest .

How will you describe your personal style

Simple, comfortable but always elegant.

9

Now, to motherhood. Tell us about the arrival of your twins and how you have coped

I love being a mother. I was created to be a Mum. It’s the essence of my very being.... And my twins know it. It makes for a truly secure way to grow up. Your marriage with Dr Tunde Soleye, how did that spark happen

Dr Soleye is an exceptionally smart and intelligent human being. He is one of the funniest men I know. Trust me : that is a very sexy combination. To me anyway. Unfortunately, intelligence and a good sense of humor is not enough to sustain a marriage. Tell us about that marriage experience

I liked being married. I love the security that comes with the knowledge that someone's got your back ! It's special and almost impossible to recreate outside of marriage. I do miss that aspect of being married.

What do you admire most in men

I’m very much attracted to intelligent, self assured men who are not cowed by strong women.

You are very beautiful woman, how do you

handle male attention

Obviously not the way I should! Otherwise I would be ensconced in one of those blissful marriages that we read about in fairytales in which love conquers all and Love never ends.

10

Any plans to try marriage again

I don’t really think about it . I’m too busy living , so I have no plans either way. But it would be nice to have a Special Someone. I think my children are old enough now .

I feel privileged and humbled to be a public figure and embrace the challenges and the ability to make a difference. But I maintain, the celebrity aspect of it is absolutely toxic.

What will you say has been your biggest achievement and why

It would have to be having my Twins. Doctors had told me it wasn’t possible for so

long that even when I was married I didn’t dare try. I dared to research Endometriosis and dared further to embark on the process of motherhood as a sole parent. And unlike Lot's wife ; I never looked back !

How do you relax? What kind of music do you like

I love Classical music . And I love watching TV. I’ll watch anything as long as it’s in a square box . I sleep with my Twins on except for when the twins are in my bed ! What books have inspired you

I loved Becoming by Michelle Obama. I loved that she mapped out what had to be done to be successful.... there is no short cut. You have to amass a phenomenal amount of skills, fortitude, determination in addition to working hard ! I’m currently reading ‘Unstoppable Self Confidence’ by Andrew Leedham. So far I’ve learnt that from this awesome author that uncertainty brings with it many incredible possibilities. I can’t wait to finish the book. You are no doubt a role model, What advice can you give the youths of today to encourage them not to lose hope in a better tomorrow

There cannot be a better tomorrow unless we work for and towards it . Nothing is going to come to us easily. It’s only through unrelenting hard work . It’s mapped out in Michelle Obama’s book very clearly. In Africa, the only route out of generational

cycles of poverty is still and always will be EDUCATION. There is no short cut.

What have you leant from the youths of today

The youths of today ‘dare’ to be. It’s something that my generation didn’t have. And those who did either had it beaten or drummed out of them. It is no accident that we have so many successful musical artists, actors, designers etc .... so much creativity. Because the youths of today have dared to want to be something other than Lawyers, Doctors and Nurses. We have a lot to learn from them. And our Continent owes them a debt of gratitude. Our youths have changed the narrative of African stories and as a result, changed how Africa is perceived. What are your future plans from now henceforth

I literally have no plans. I just want to live my best life every day. If it pleases God to make a couple more of my wishes come true , I will embrace it and be eternally grateful.

What don’t you like about being a celebrity

The loss of privacy is beyond difficult to deal with. It is something that no one can imagine unless they’ve experienced it. I literally have no words to describe what it feels like to make all your mistakes in the full glare of the public. Nor can I describe what it feels like to have endless public speculation about your private life . Why you haven’t married. Are you in fact marriage material? Why you haven’t had children. Whether or not you can ... It would take a remarkably strong man and a phenomenally strong relationship to withstand all of that constant press attention. What do you like about being a Celebrity

I don’t like being a celebrity. I feel privileged and humbled to be a public figure and embrace the challenges and the ability to make a difference. But I maintain, the celebrity aspect of it is absolutely toxic. I don’t like being a celebrity. What is your philosophy of life

To live my best life EVERYDAY. This philosophy guides my choice in the kind of clothes I wear. The kind of food I put on the table for my family. My lifestyle choices even in exercise. I make sure I am happy and living the best life I can Who is Nike Oshinowo? Describe

her in a few words

I am the most complex yet simple human being I know. I love Love. I love good food. And I love being in bed. Spending time with my Twins is a privilege that I never imagined I would ever enjoy - so I cherish every moment with them. I work frightfully hard which affords me the ability to live ‘My Way’.

86TH BIRTHDAY IN GRAND STYLE

ust as he has been doing for many years now, influential business titan and Esama of Benin Kingdom, His Excellency Sir (Chief) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion literarily shut down Benin City, the capital of Edo State when he celebrated his 86th birthday. The ever stylish and colourful Esama, who never settles for anything but the very best, despite scaling down festivities due to the global COVID-19 pandemic still attracted hundreds of thousands in the course of the week-long celebration. This year, Chief Igbinedion began his programme with an intellectually-stimulating birthday lecture on September 3, 2020 at Nigeria’s numero uno private university, Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.

Story: Michael Effiong Photo: Ken Ehimen

The Guest lecturer was none other than His Excellency Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Governor of Gombe State who spoke on the topic “ “Globalisation and the future of Tertiary Education in Nigeria” According to the Guest Lecturer “To be invited to deliver the 86th Birthday Lecture of this distinguished and illustrious Son of Africa, His Excellency Sir Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom is indeed to me, aunique privilege and an honour. I thank the authorities of the Igbinedion University especially The Chancellor, ProChancellor and the Governing Council, Vice Chancellor, Senate and Congregation, the Academic community, the Administrative staff and all the students of this university for this

recognition, I am deeply honoured to have been invited to join you on this auspicious occasion of the 86th Birthday Celebration of the Esama of the Universe of Igbinedion UniversityOkada.”. Today's lecture is captured “Globalization and the Future of Tertiary Education in Nigeria”. The choice of this Birthday Lecture topic is quite deliberate and highly instructive. First, the celebrant is an international business colossus, great patriot, educationalist, philanthropist and pathfinder. He has been operating businesses at a global level for several decades before the concept and issue of globalization began to gain worldwide attention. He, in a way, is a globalized person including in marriage. He then went on to explore such sub-topics

Nigeria must therefore design some deliberate policies to combat theattrition rate by putting in place a reward mechanism for those thatchoose to return, improve the quality and standard of education in thecountry to world class status and erect some

international bureaucratic barriers that could discourage foreign studies and enhance effective utilisation of human mental resources within the knowledge economy. An empirical validation of actual number of Nigerians lost through this phenomenon and an understanding of the real push-pull factors shouldbe carried out and investigated. “ I congratulate the celebrant, the Great Esama of Bini Kingdom, his family and friends on this day of joy. For the Celebrant today, I cannot resist saying my favourite prayer for you; as your days, so shall yourstrength, your wisdom and favour with God Insha Allah.

This means you will have enough strength in your bodies, your minds and finances,to meet your daily challenges. May the Almighty God give you good health. I wish you from the depth of my heart and in behalf of my family and the good people of Gombe State, many more happy and fruitful years to serve God, the nation and humanity in general. My name is Tolulope Onalaja. I was born into a family of six. I am the only girl and have three younger brothers. I come from a middle-class home and went to Our Ladies of Apostle Private School, Yaba, Lagos, and that’s actually the first private school in Nigeria, before going to Methodist Girls High School, Yaba. I attended the University of Ibadan, because I got tired of Yaba axis, where I graduated from the Faculty of Education, as a Counseling Psychologist. I practiced for about three years at the Federal College of Education, Akoka as the School Counsellor. Afterwards, I obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management from the University of Calabar and followed it up with a Masters in Business Administration from the same university. And for the sake of self improvement, I did several professional courses. I am looking forward to having my Ph.D before I clock 50. I am an alumnus of Pan-Atlantic University and Lagos Business School and also a member of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

51

I am just wonderfully and fearfully made by God. I am someone who likes excellence and love having intelligent people around me. I am a go-getter and a very focused person.

I joined Revolution Plus in 2016 after a 13year stint in other organisations including Dry Cleaners Limited, one of the biggest facility company in Nigeria where I worked for 10 years as the Chief Operating Officer. I joined my husband's business when it was gathering momentum and needed more hands. I graduated at 21 and served at 22. I entered the labour market at 23 (2003), got married in 2004 and gave birth to my first child in 2005. I have two children, and married to Mr. Bamidele Onalaja, the MD of Revolution Plus.

Did growing up among three brothers make you a tom-boy

Honestly, I was a tom-boy all through my school days. I still exhibit traces of a tomboy, and it is difficult to let go. I don’t do what most ladies do like selecting body cream and others. I have that carefree attitude like boys. We all use the same body-cream, hair-cream, and all. Till now, my mannerism and behaviour still betray me. You rarely see me gossip, and keep female friends. I have more male friends than female friends. I have more male traits than female traits.

You just celebrated your 40th birthday. What does it feel like to be 40

It feels like normal. I am still young, but sometimes, when I look at my children; it reminds me of my age. Nevertheless, everything looks normal.

If everything looks normal, why was it necessary to have an elaborate celebration

This is because it is a landmark. For me, I have a lot of things to thank God for at 40.

Your husband claims you are the brain behind Revolution Plus, how would you describe this

Real estate is my husband’s thing because he is passionate about it and once worked in the Mortgage Industry. It was from there he developed a passion for real estate and affordable housing. He is so passionate about real estate that if you ask him what he wants to do in ten years’ time, he will tell you real estate. One day, he brought the vision that he wants people to own homes and that government cannot do it alone; and I just supported. My support in the business occurred because I have sat on several boards and been a top management staff of several organizations; so, I have a lot of management skills which has helped the business tremendously. Basically, I handle all the management functions. Maybe another reason is because, when we were about starting, we had a lot of challenges and my husband was about giving up after no one agreed to support his idea. One day, I remember he came home unhappy and I comforted him; telling him it is too late for us to give up, and I told him we should hold a fast and pray for seven days with the belief that God will speak to us. On the third day of the fast, I told him Holy Spirit asked me to tell him we should meet my uncle, Dr Boye Olusanya. He objected at first because he doesn't like meeting family members for help, but he said if it is the Holy Spirit who told me, He would go ahead of us. So, I called him. He is the immediate past Provost of Federal College of Education, Akoka. He died last year (2019). He was the person God used to start Revolution Plus, and he was the first person that invested in this

52

business. And I remember he gave us N3 million. Maybe that’s why my husband will always say that I'm the brain behind the business.

So, what is it like working with your husband

People do say it is very difficult to see husband and wife working together because of fights and misunderstandings. But our working together has been fun as we have our strengths. He handles the sites and land grabbers while mine is to manage all the offices; employment of staff, administration, and all management functions. This makes us work seamlessly, since we know what Managing Director and Executive Director is in-charge of. This has also helped our marriage. We can’t fight for more than 30 minutes because we have many things in common for the business, and we know we can't keep malice and achieve results. Even when we fight, something about the business will immediately bring us back. Working together has really brought us closer.

Over time, there have been several revolutions in Revolution Plus. What’s the magic

Nobody is an island of knowledge, and we can only try our best, and God blesses. If He doesn't, one will only struggle in vain. We are six this year, and those we met in this industry marvel at our achievements. I will say it has been God. When God sees your heart and genuineness, He just works. Also, our work experiences are core factor, and everything we do there is a consequence of passion, commitment, desire to improve and more. All these have made Revolution Plus what it is today.

What can you say life has taught you at 40

Yes! One of the things I learnt recently is that you need to limit the access you give people into

your life. And that you don’t over trust people because the people you trust the most will disappoint you. Aside that, life has been good to me, and God has also been good to me at 40. People do think I am more than 40 because of my achievements and accomplishments.

Sometimes, people describe you as extremely beautiful, smart and brilliant. How does this make you feel

(Laughs) I am just wonderfully and fearfully made by God. I am one who likes excellence and love having intelligent people around me. I don’t take NO for an answer; I am a go-getter and a very focused person. Things that don’t go along that line doesn’t resonate with me. I was an A student and I balance it with social activities, but I cut off distractions.

Despite all your achievements, you are widely known for humility. How did you achieve this

When you remember where you are coming from, it will make you humble. A scripture always comes to mind. And it says “what is man that God is mindful of him?” I know that it is not because I pray or worship God better but because He chooses to extend His grace to me. So, that’s what keeps me humble.

You are a mother, a wife and an accomplished entrepreneur, how did you manage these at your age

It is natural for a woman to multi-task but how we develop it matters. Naturally, you must be a wife to husband, mother to children and still work. Therefore, learning to combine all is multitasking. With all humility, my organizational skill is top-notch. I am very organized. During my child rearing days, if you visit my house, you won’t know toddlers live in it as the house is always well arranged unlike other people’s house

Our working together has been fun. We can’t fight for more than 30 minutes because we have many things in common

that will be scattered. So, this has helped me to balance; I know when to pick up my children, make dinner for my husband, do house chores, etc. All through my work life, nothing has suffered. Even when my children were growing, I was still working for people.

Aside business, how do you relax

I relax in two ways. One, when I sometimes close from work on Fridays, I go to the cinema to see movies I have not seen before. I don’t like watching movies at home. Two, I love sunbathing at the beach side. The beaches I love are

Landmark and Hard Rock Café. This brings inspirations into me and that’s how I basically relax.

What sport do you like

I don’t like sports. I am not a sport person at all. My husband is the sport fan. He always tries to make me like sports. I think I love books more. Everybody is a Manchester United fan in my house because my husband is a Man-U fan; so, he made everyone like Man-U by force. To the point that he took us to Manchester United’s stadium in 2015 to go see the place. We just have to like

Man-U by force.

What dish can make you abandon other things

I don’t have a best food but maybe I like rice or pounded yam. And my mood determines what I eat; sometimes I prefer porridge. I don’t like one specific food as preference depends on the environment.

What’s your fashion sense

My fashion sense is simplicity. I hate anything loud and heavy; like make-up, jewelry, etc. I like to be simple and classy; that’s my style. I don’t buy anything bogus like jewelry,

53

Where do you see Revolution Plus in 10 years

By then, we would have taken over. You know our mission is to be the number one real estate company in Nigeria and the Sub-Saharan Africa. And we are working tirelessly to achieve this. This year alone, I know the number of states we have visited to open offices. We also have an office in the United States, and planning to have one in Canada. By our 10th anniversary, I know Revolution Plus will be unbeatable.

Who are your competitors and those that threaten your vision

About competitions, I don’t strive. My spirit doesn’t strive. It doesn’t go down well with me. When I copy other people to do my things, it won't work for me. So, I hardly look at what competitors are doing; I just do what God asks me to do because once I focus on people, I lose focus on God. I don’t focus on competitors; no one shakes me! Everyone is doing their thing. The world is enough for everyone. I know once I do what God asks me to do, I will survive. I will rather focus on doing this and leave the rest.

Since the company started, can you itemize the CSR done by it

dress, and even to cars. I don’t like going around with big cars but my husband forces me to take it out sometimes. I am just a simple person; very simple person.

You are a Rotarian, what inspired you to join Rotary Club

I am a philanthropist by nature. I love to give a lot. When I have not given, it looks as if something in me is not right. Like other clubs that show their members luxurious status in golf playing, tennis, etc., I realized Rotary Club is not like that. They are meant to help the less privileged. The Rotary ideals go with my ideals in life. Rotary is a philanthropic organization that helps the needy around the world. I joined it while I was in secondary school. I was the President of Rotaract Club while at Methodist Girls High School in 1996. I couldn't follow up in the university because I was busy pastoring a fellowship. I was also involved in school politics. But when I left school, someone invited me to Rotary Club, and based on my past experience as a Rotaractor, I joined the Rotary Club. And on March 13, 2014, I was the President of Rotary Club, Lagos West. I am a past president in rotary

54

We do a lot of Corporate Social Responsibility services. As my husband and I are philanthropists by nature, CSR shows in our businesses, to our staff and even those who don’t work for us. Some bigger multi-national companies don't attempt the kind of giving back we do. Every year, we partner with Lagos State government and Access Bank for the Lagos marathon. We have a five years mandate to be the official real estate sponsor for the marathon. This marathon supports several athletes; even disabled. Sometimes, we give them lands. The journalist, Owolabi, who was killed in Abuja was honored by us with a land, and the parents have come to pick up the documents. And we do a lot of event sponsorship like AY Live, gospel concert, and many others. We do a lot of giving back. Sometimes, we go to anywhere our estates are located to give foodstuffs, school bags, etc., and we run 'stomach infrastructure' with our sales, and people are given rice, ram, groundnutoil, cow, etc. People that received bags of rice during Christmas were grateful since it is expensive in the market. I think giving back is just part of us.

What is your prayer at 40

The ideals of Rotary Club go with my ideals. I love to give

and also a major donor.

As a mother, wife and entrepreneur, what qualities do you admire in people

I think because I am a workaholic, I admire people who are hardworking, focused and contended. Anyone with these things would be my best friend. I dislike anyone who doesn’t like to work and prefer to cut corners to get things. That is why to my staff, I am a role-model.

Who is your role model

My role model is Folorunsho Alakija. She is one of the people I look up to, and people do say we look alike. She is my role model and I aim to be the richest too.

Aside not liking people with lackadaisical attitude, are there other things you don’t like in people

I don’t like people who are not straight forward; people who pretend and are not what they claimed to be. I tell people, I am a Christian and a very devoted one. But I don’t miss the part of grace with the part of work. When you are lazy and you are quoting scriptures saying God will do it, you cannot be my friend. Those are some of the things I don’t like.

Since I still have many things to achieve, my prayer is that God will fulfill all desires I have tendered before him.

Definitely, there were several admirers on your neck before you married your husband. What made you settle for him

When I met my husband, his salary was around N30,000, he didn’t really have money. Then, he wasn’t looking like he is now. I think he had two or three shirts because when he comes to visit, he repeats those shirts. And then, I had two guys who were on my neck who were bankers, with cars and money. But one thing deferentiated him; he was God fearing, and I know anyone who loves and fears God will definitely love man. Secondly, he was very selfless. All my life, I have never met anyone like him. He can give out his eyes if another person needs it more than him. It is extreme to the point that I have to put cautions. This attracted me to him because if he was that selfless. Then, he would take me to Ikeja under bridge to buy ‘Bend Down Cloths’; since that’s what he can afford. One day, he took me there and spent N18,000. I know he earns N30,000 and he bought cloths worth N18,000 for me. This got me thinking, and that meant if he had one million, he won’t hesitate to spend 800,000 on me. With this, I made up my mind that he is the person I am going to marry because I know when he has more, he will do more. And he wasn’t doing it to me alone, he does it to everyone even with the little he had. My guess wasn’t wrong, because as he grew bigger and bigger, he was doing better and better. Even for my birthday, he spared no expense. Even when I complained, he shrugged it off.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE

I

During the thanksgiving service

t was with so much gusto that Mrs Tolulope Onalaja, the Executive Director of top-rate real estate company, Revolution Plus Properties rolled out the drums to celebrate her 40th birthday. Basking in the euphoria of her landmark age, Mrs Onalaja who gave all the credit for a superlative celebration to her husband, Bamidele, could not hide her happiness and gratitude as she wore a smile all through the various ceremonies. The celebration began with a charity event where the celebrant who is the co-founder of the Bamidele Onalaja Foundation splashed goodies on some widows, this event was attended by super star Singer, Teni. Then it was time to give glory to God at a thanksgiving service held at her church, Christ Embassy. At the service, where there was a session of praises and thanksgiving, special prayers were rendered for Mrs Onalaja and her family. Later that day, the party train which was now at full throttle screeched to a halt at the prestigious Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. The party venue had been tastefully transformed and the atmosphere was convivial and soothing as guests arrived. Anchored by A-list Comedian, Ayo Makun popularly called AY and colleague, Real Warri Pickin, the event began with an opening prayer by Pastor Victor Akinbu.

It was soon after that the birthday Princess made her grand entrance. She was stunning in a cut-to-fit ivory gown. She was escorted by her Prince Charming, her loving husband, Bamidele. With guests and friends on their feet, she danced majestically towards her special seating area and as she took one step after another, she kept exchanging pleasantries. In the course of the ceremony, many people were invited to speak about Mrs Onalaja. The speakers revealed her no nonsense nature but noted that she was also amiable and caring. It was an elated Tolulope who stepped out later on with her husband for the cutting of her creativelycrafted birthday cake to the delight and applause of all those present. It was indeed a very fun-fillled occasion. Apart from guests enjoying sumptuous meals and exotic drinks, they were entertained by the first-rate Shuga Band led by Akin Tofowomo as well as the energetic DJ Exclusive. Mrs Onalaja, who has a fullfledged private school, Todel Nursery and Primary School in Ikorodu, Lagos where less privileged children are offered free education, told us that she was thankful to God

that the day went very well. To round off what was certainly a most exciting celebration, the Onalajas also hosted family and friends to an all-white birthday boat cruise. Again, everyone had loads of fun.

ru Kingdom, located in Victoria Island, Lagos was thrown into mourning on September 19, 2019 when Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru passed on at the age of 82, but eight months later after a thorough search and healthy competition, sadness turned to joy with the announcement that urbane and astute public servant, Prince Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal of the Abisogun and Akiogun Ruling Houses will be new Monarch. The announcement by the government was followed with a formal presentation of staff of office and instrument of appointment by Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, making Oba Lawal, who will be known as Abisogun II, the 15th Oniru of Iruland. Though many traditional rites had been carried out, the ceremonies were rounded off with a spectacular coronation event that was upscale and regal. It was filled with a rich display of the kingdom’s culture and tradition.

new Oba who was joined by his gorgeous and graceful wife, Olori Maryam, in his full regalia, complete with beaded crown and instrument of office, took centre stage. An elated Oba Lawal stated “Today begins another significant chapter in the annals of our dear Iruland as well as my life’s journey. Personally, this brings to my mind the complexity of life as espoused by Garth Nix who said and I quote “Does the Walker choose the path, or the path, the walker”. I am convinced that all these were in the pre-determined plans of Almighty Allah, who makes us as pencils in His magnificent hands. “I started from the Palace in 1977 precisely,

66

then went out of the Palace, and Lagos to other places, only now to arrive back here in the palace where I will remain until I join my ancestor” Oba Lawal paid glowing tribute to his late dad, Chief Taurid Omobolaji Lawal-Akapo, Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and his sweet mother, Olori Kemi Lawal Akapo for their special love and strict upbringing which had helped him over the years. While expressing his deepest appreciation for all the encomiums and prayers showered on him since he was named the Oniru, Oba Lawal, a three-time member of the State Executive Council, went ahead to unveil his economic development plan for the kingdom, titled: Let’s

Develop Iruland Together condensed in the acronym “LeGIt”. In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat described traditional institutions as “indispensable branch” of Yoruba society, stressing that the socio-economic growth witnessed in Iru Kingdom in the last two decades had contributed in no small measure to the development of Lagos. Mr Governor commended the monarch for keeping peace and for sustaining the effort to unite members of the royal families after ascending the throne. The Governor said he looked forward to more

rewarding development activities in Iru land, but urged residents to rally round the Oniru and maintain peace in order to achieve the monarch’s outlined objectives. Sanwo-Olu said he had absolute confidence in the leadership ability of Oba Lawal to transform the kingdom into a 21st century city of commerce and culture, urging him to bring his wealth of experience in public service to bear in the administration of Iru land. According to the Governor “During the installation ceremony in June, I enjoined the Oniru to strengthen the existing bond of unity within Iru land for the overall development of peace and progress of this kingdom. Two months on the throne, I’m pleased to note that the monarch took this advice to heart as exemplified by his very impressive actions characterised by wisdom, knowledge and large heartedness. The speech making segment was rounded off by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who eulogized the monarch and called for unity among Lagosians. Thereafter, the venue exploded into a full party scene with good music, choice beverages and gourmet dishes flowing freely till late into the night.

The Oniru was born in 1970 to late Chief T. A. Lawal- Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and Olori M. A. Lawal-Akapo. Gbolahan is a Lagos Prince from the Ojora, Aromire, Shokun and Abisogun branch of Oniru Royal families of Lagos State. He holds an Executive MSc in CITIES (LSE, Cities) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. elebrated Nigerians joined family and friends to give a virtuous woman, Deaconess Adetoun Oladeji a very glorious farewell as she was committed to mother earth in Ibadan, Oyo State. The accomplished Deaconess, who served diligently and consistently in the vineyard of the Lord began her final journey home with a service of songs held at MOAT Pavillion, International Conference Centre, Ibadan.

72

The Officiating Ministers

The service of songs was such an emotional occasion for many, who used the opportunity to recount memorable moments with Deaconess Oladeji, who was fondly referred to as a mother in a million. The next day, a funeral service was held at Orita Meta Baptist Church where His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, coordinated proceedings. In his sermon, he stated that the deceased lived a fruitful and rewarding

life and left many laudable legacies. After the wondrous service, her remains were moved to the church’s cemetery where they were interred amid dust-to-dust rites and tears by her children and close family members. The funeral, which was professionally organized by 2706 Events was thereafter rounded off with a firstrate reception at the Moat Pavillion, International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The life of the mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who died peacefully in her sleep on August 17, 2020 at the age of 98, was celebrated with fanfare by her closest and dearest. Her journey to be with the Lord began when her remains were

ferried from the Dignity Funeral Home, Bethnal Green, London, to St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Hackney, where a funeral service was held. The service was soulful and solemn and was marked by praises and hymns. There was a prayer session for the repose of the soul of the departed matriarch as well as her bereaved family. born on February 22, 1922 in Nigeria had gone to be with the Lord. After the service, in typical Nigerian traditional style, her remains were escorted to the Islington Cemetery in North London with superlative music provided by flautist and drummers. Of course, despite the downpour, the family members danced delightfully, in celebration of a life that was well spent. The grave side ceremony was brief and immediately the dust-to-rite was concluded by the officiating Priest, instead of groaning and mourning, the family once again broke into another session of singing and dancing, The day’s celebration of life was rounded off with lively reception at the Holiday Inn Express, Golders Green; a fitting finale to mark the passing of a compassionate, indefatigable and virtuous woman.

TRIBUTES BY HER FAMILY

SHE WAS A GREAT TREE AND MATRIARCH -Abeke Popoola

Our lovely mother and grandmother Margaret Onofeta- Ojo who was 98 years-old and so full of life passed away so quickly and unexpectedly. We will remember her forever as the great matriarch that built a legacy for us all to cherish. A mother who loved her community, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a mother to others. Someone, you would fall in love with instantly. A gentle, kind, and peaceful soul. A great tree has fallen and we, her family are the roots she so carefully planted. Although it is painful for us to see you go we know you are with us and part of us. We miss you, we love you and we thank you. Our ancestor and angel Margaret is in the hands of God reunited with our precious loved one. Please continue to pray for her and family and the lives she has touched on this earth. A LEGEND AND PEACEFUL QUEEN -Madam Aina Onofeta Odubu My mother was a lovely women and there is no one that I can compare her to. My father died when I was about 10 years old. My mother raised me and 7 other children, if she was struggling for money she would never let me know. But no matter what,

She is a legend and a peaceful queen. She lived a long life, but there is nothing that can fill the hole she has left behind. I will miss her smile and dancing forever. I love her so much but God loves her more. May her gentle, honest and loving soul rest in perfect peace

dren and everyone you came across. You have been the pillar of our family and loved by everyone. Your life as a great woman, great mother, great grand mother and a great motivator would forever leave a long lasting memory in our lives. You taught us how to serve God and how to be prayerful at all times, You prayed for,not just your children alone, but your loved ones as well. My mother always shared whatever she had with everyone around her- nothing was too big to give, she would always say there is love in sharing. She didn’t want anybody around her to lack anything especially the less privileged. She was always there for us and everyone.

My intelligent mother, very swift and a problem solver. You were very outspoken, fearless and very confident. You brought joy and happiness to all. During her last days on earth she visited all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was happy and kept on blessing everybody in her prayers. I call her “Hugonofure”. You will be greatly missed by everyone especially those who knew her with her singing and dancing. My mother, good night, sleep and rest well in the bossom of your Lord and saviour. Till we meet again and part no more “adieu”. Love you my mother Hugonofure.

here was love and laughter in the air as the familes of retired Brig. Gen S.G. & Mrs Oyeyemi Ladipo and that of Mr Edward Olabode & Barr. Yetunde Foster-Aileru united in marriage. They had no choice but to come together because their children, Olugbenga Laoye and Elizabeth Temidayo had decided to take the leap of faith and begin the journey into matrimony via two wonderful ceremonies in Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital. The wedding train began with a traditional ceremony at the Rabby Recreational Park. While the bride's family chose shades of pink, the groom's

family decided on adorning shades of purple, the ceremony was as colourful.as it was cultural. The event brought to fore the rich Yoruba tradition as the pair went through all marital rites with fanfare. It was at St. Matthews Church, Maitama, Abuja that their years of friendship was given the spiritual seal at a wondrous service. There, they said "I do" and exhanged rings to the delight of all present. That over, both families then treated guests to a lively reception at Rabby Recreation Park. What a great way to round off this celebration of undiluted love.

here is nothing as fulfilling as living a ife of great impact and also leaving your memories in the hearts of loved ones. These aptly described the exemplary life of Olori Olabisi Modupe Owolola, whose journey to the great beyond started with a funeral service at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Ayegbaju, IleIfe, Osun State. As early as 9am, the remains of the Mama, as she was fondly called, were received in the church by officiating ministers amid solemn processional hymns. In his sermon, Ven. Soji Ogunyimika reminded every mortal about the inevitable end while encouraging Christians to emulate the life Christ lived as evidenced in the lives of saints that have passed on. He also informed that Olori Olabisi’s life was worthy of emulation and admonished the

congregation not to be weary in doing good things. Ven. Ogunyimika also prayed for the family members, requesting God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. Thereafter, children and grand children of the deceased observed a thanksgiving session, and the church service came to an end with a recessional hymn: “We shall gather at the river side.” After the remains of the deceased had been committed to mother earth at the St. Paul’s Anglican Communion Cemetery, guests moved to Iyeru Ideal Hall, Obalufe Layout, Parakin, Ile-Ife for a grand reception, where popular gospel musician, Gbenga Falope and his group entertained the guests. The highpoint of the happy occasion was individual display of dance steps by the family members as they took their turn on stage. It was indeed a celebration of a worthy life well lived.
