THE TRADITIONAL WEDDING
I
t was regal, it was glitzy and glamorous. In deed, it was the numero uno ceremony of that period in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital when Adesekemi Aderemi and Anthony Atuche united in marriage. Born to Prince Adedamola Aderemi and Princess Olukemi Aderemi, Adesekemi comes from a distinguished royal and noble lineage. She is a descendant of the late Ooni of Ife and first Black Governor, Oba Adesoji Aderemi, and Premier of Western Nigeria and Balogun of Owu, Alhaji Dauda Adegbenro, on the paternal side, and erudite and eminent school principal and one of Nigeria's pioneer Ambassadors, A B O Oyediran and the Premier of Western Nigeria and Vice Chairman of the Federal Executive Council under General Yakubu Gowon, the Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo on the maternal side. Adesekemi Aderemi completed her secondary education at the world renowned ladies Public School, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, United Kingdom before going on to study Law at Oxford University. Blessed with beauty and brains, she was awarded a special commemorative gold minted coin as the best postgraduate student in the entire Buckingham University when she graduated with Distinction in her Masters of Law Degree and she was called to the Bar in 2012, receiving the top Inner Temple prize for outstanding achievement in her Bar exams. Similarly well-educated and from a privileged background, Anthony Atuche schooled at the historic St Edmund’s College, England’s oldest Catholic school, before attending the prestigious Imperial College , London. Anthony also boasts an impressive and illustrious background; he is the first born of prominent businessman and erstwhile top banker, who is now a property magnate, Francis Atuche and wife, Elizabeth Atuche. The Atuches are also nobility and hail from the princely merchant town of Ibusa, Delta State, which is famed for the numerous entrepreneurs and icons of the Nigerian business and corporate world that it has spawned. 5

It was without any shadow of doubt the coming together of two illustrious families when the duo began their love-filled journey to marital bliss as friends and family convened to celebrate their traditional marriage at the prestigious and discreet The Bell Event Centre on Campbell Street, Lagos Island. The ceremony was an exhibition of culture and class. What made the occasion spectacular was that despite the fact that the couple are from different ethnic groups and cultures, the conviviality and air of friendship at the venue was really heartwarming.Little wonder that everyone confessed that they had loads of fun. A few days later, the lovebirds affirmed their love with holy solemnisation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Victoria Island. The beautiful bride, was so elated & joyous as she exchanged "I do’s" with her dashing & softspoken husband. The well-attended Catholic Church Communion service peaked with the couple’s introduction to the congregation after signing the marriage register. Apart from the proud parents, catholic sponsors of the bride, Mr Toyin Pinheiro, SAN and wife, Tolu also beamed with smile as the spiritually-stimulating service was rounded off. Later, the families hosted a top notch reception exquisitely planned by Princess Denrele Fayose's Ruby Fay Events at Balmoral Event

Elsie Duncan Williams. There were also words of exhortation by anointed men of God. In his remarks, Gov. Udom described the funeral as a bridge building ceremony. He spoke glowingly of his father's character and expressed shock at the turnout of people who came to console the family and celebrate their father. "I did not know that we were this loved by Nigerians, we feel indebted to you all. There is a difference between character and charisma. My father was a man of character". Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State also spoke and described Elder Nkanang in glowing terms Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo while commiserating with the family urged the children and family members to reflect on the life of the late patriarch. He said the way all his children had turned out was a testament to the greatness of the late patriarch. With lovely hymns and performances by Mercy Chinwo and
Dan D Humorous
Pastor Eben, the ceremony ended with prayers. The interment was a private affair attended by only the Nkanang family. The air around the burial site was sombre as they all bade farewell to the giant of a man. It was a befitting farewell for a well-loved patriarch. The day's event was rounded off with a well-planned reception which held at various venues across the town. The funeral ceremony was rounded off with a thanksgiving service the very next day at the Qua Iboe Church, Awa-Iman. A testament to the tremendous goodwill enjoyed by the Akwa Ibom Governor and members of the family was the fact that hundreds including Governors attended the service which was a most befitting farewell to the great icon. Elder Gabriel Emmanuel Nkanang was born into a very pious Christian Family on a Monday, May 27 1929. His family trained him in the way of the Lord (Prov 22:6) and throughout his life he did not depart from it.

Later, the foundations of his faith were strengthened by his association with missionaries. The missionaries, who appreciated his love for God and appetite for education, deepened his eschatological knowledge and encouraged his pursuit of western education. As he grew in favour with God and with man, his determination to serve God also grew. Within this context of faith and service, he discovered his purpose as a Christian and saw himself as a humble actor playing his role in a divine script written by God Almighty. Whenever he encountered any downturn, he encouraged himself in the Lord by reading and making

reference to Jeremiah 1:5 (Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart and I appointed you as a prophet to the nations’’) and Romans 8:29-30 (for those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son… And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified, he also glorified). To some, teaching was just a profession, but to Pa, teaching (especially children) was more than a profession- it was a ministry and a calling. It is allegorical that the birthday of this iconic lover of children would later be declared Children’s Day by the Nigerian Government after it was proclaimed four
years earlier (1925) in Geneva. In dealing with his pupils as a headmaster and educationist, he embodied knowledge, virtue, wit and compassion. With steady gait, dexterous hands and razor-sharp mind, he showed children in darkness the light of the Gospel; he gave hope to the hopeless and strength to the weary. He was adept at making concrete even the most abstract of situations. In the schools where he taught, he kept the children on their toes by insisting that any child could be asked to preach at the morning assembly. This "policy" literally forced all children to read their Bibles and they always came to school prepared with a scripture to share. He was the life President of Awa Students Association Worldwide.

While he labored in his teaching profession, he balanced his time with providing leadership to his community and discharging his duties and responsibilities as an elder of the Qua Iboe Church. He also worked assiduously in the tasks of spreading the gospel, going beyond his community to places as far flung as the Middle-Belt region of the country, thereby playing an important role in the formation of and mentoring of very many people within the Church and outside. A good number of them have gone ahead to attain various levels of success. Pa believed that

education was the panacea for the development and actively campaigned for it at every conceivable opportunity. Pa Nkanang was a man ahead of his time. He was impatient with failure yet calculated, abstract yet concrete, and he had an unusual craving for knowledge. His commitment to family, people and society will remain one of his indelible footprints. He trusted and believed in the inherent willingness of people to give their best for the common good; and saw this as a function of opportunity, trust, motivation,
empowerment and taking responsibility. His usual refrain was that those who are more successful in life are those that had the most opportunities, realized and taken advantage-and not those who are necessarily more gifted or more brilliant. Even more, he would say, ‘’the race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favour to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all’’. Perhaps, one of Elder Gabriel Nkanang’s most important traits was his resilience or adversity quotient. He will be missed by his children, grand children and great grand children.

DEACONESS RISIKAT OGUNDIPE CELEBRATES A LIVELY 70TH BIRTHDAY IN LAGOS Story: Eric Elezuo Photo: Segun Lawal

Celebrant with children
y every standard, attaining the age of 70 is quite an accomplishment, and so it proved to be when the family of Deaconess Dorcas Risikat Ogundipe gathered friends, well wishers and colleagues to celebrate her joining the septuagenarian club. The lively event, which kicked off with a prayer by Prophet Akinola Fasawe, was held at the Taynet Event Centre, Alakuko, Lagos, with equally lively personalities including members of the Genesis Model Parish, in attendance. Relieving the good times he had shared with his beloved mum who is also a proud grand mother, the celebrant's first son, Prophet Israel Oladele Ogundipe, remarked thus: "The lessons you have taught me cannot be found anywhere else because they are real-life experiences. I truly appreciate your efforts for me and I wish you a marvelous 70th birthday." The joyous celebrant couldn't hold back her excitement as she danced heartily in the company of her children and other loved ones as the ageless golden voice Evangelist Ebenezer Obey belted evergreen tunes from his rich repertoire. Thereafter, she was assisted by very close family members to cut her 70th birthday cake to the admiration of all present. Dignitaries that attended the occasion were CEO, Oodua TV, (UK), Dr. Ayo Coker; Mrs. Bose Osinowo, CEO, Ademoj Catering Service and Alhaja Mojisola Fatima Sani.

With carols and hymns, Hymnodia Choir took the audience on a musical journey, no one was in doubt that Christmas was in the air with the superlative rendition of the choir, which was appreciated with a wondrous applause. With ebullient comedian and broadcast personality, Okey Bakassi as Compere, the evening moved on smoothly. Okey kept his jokes short and simple and ensured that the organiser's concept of more music and less talk was achieved. One of the speeches was from the Chief Host and Chairman, OVATION Media Group, Bashorun Dele Momodu.
Mr. Niyi Aroyehun
He told the cheering audience to brace up for the an exciting evening while delving down memory lane on the journey of OVATION as an entity and OVATION Carol as ‘one of the reasons Lagos is the most important city in Africa’. Bashorun Momodu’s address was later followed with remarks from the event sponsor and Founder of Esther Ajayi Foundation, Reverend Mother Esther Ajayi. Her invitation was heralded by a thunderous ovation, signifying her acceptability as an amiable woman of faith, whose stock in trade is giving.

Bashorun Dele Momodu with Uncle Sunmi Smart-Cole
Delivering her speech in company of her husband, Reverend (Dr.) Ademuyiwa Ajayi, the renowned philanthropist acknowledged the good work of Ovation Media Group has been associated with over the years. She paid glowing tributes to Ovation Founder, Bashorun Momodu whom she described as a man of integrity with a good heart. She called on all who are in doubt about her source of wealth to ask questions instead of dwelling in gossip, adding that her Foundation will continue to sponsor the Ovation Carol for the next 10 years, at least. The stage was then set for the lively evening with rising stars Gypsy, Jimi Abduls, Fresh L Wole DSB, Koye Sax, Aramide and Rema setting the pace. They were followed by back to back by the continent's super stars. Rave of the moment and Grammy Nominee, Burna Boy, ensured there the audience were kept on their toes. Right from when he was announced, through to his last song, he was phenomenal. Burna, just like last year, was the star of the evening. Free spirited Teni also ranked her in the minds of the audience, she was greeted with enthusiasm by as many of those who ‘want to be a billionaire’. She literally commanded and controlled her stage like it was second nature. During the performance of her hit ‘wait for me’, Teni practically dragged ‘one fine bobo’ up stage, and pretended she was proposing to him. The young man, who turned out to be Wahab Okoya, the teenage son of billionaire
businessman, Alhaji Razak Okoya, did not respond to her love advances. He just stood still, taking pictures, while ignoring Teni’s seductive moves. But the crowd was greatly thrilled by this spontaneous action and screamed with delight. That was not all, street hop master and rapper, Olamide fondly called Badoo was soon to mount the stage and he also gave a good account of himself. Rude boy, one half of the former Psquare was also on stage and he too did not disappoint. The organisers of the carol also gave its platform to evergreen acts like Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu and "Omoge" crooner, Mike Okri. They both took many in the audience down memory lane and it was refreshing to see many sing along to some of the tunes. Gospels acts also came in full force from the energetic Testimony, spiritually-stimulating instagram sensation, Funke Akinokun to the dramatic Tim Godfrey, and afrocentric saxophonist, Mike Aremu, they all served a full course of food for the soul. The high point of the evening which was produced by Chaterhouse was the presentation of awards and induction of prominent achievers into the Ovation Hall of Fame. The first to be inducted was ace photographer and the real "Mr. Do All", Sunmi SmartCole. Reading the recipient’s citation before the award was presented, a former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Rueben Abati, noted that

he colours, the ambience and the general feelings were highly turbocharged when West Africa crossed paths with South America at the highly rated wedding ceremonies of Tayo Aderibigbe from Nigeria and his adorable sweetheart, Gabriella De Oliveria from Brazil at the cozy city of Surrey, United Kingdom. The moments were nothing short of magical, breathtaking and magnificent, with four classy outings in a space of one weekend: African and Brazilian traditions were at their best, exuding pomp, glamour and love. The elegant mother of the groom, Mrs. Patricia Aderibigbe, set the stage for what was going to be the wedding of the year when a private dinner bash was hosted by her close friends and associates, Maureen Bond and Temi Awofala, at the GA Grill Restaurant in the heart of London. The informal get together, which had members of Beacon Club International, which the mother of the groom co-founded, featured "get to know you" games, music and highoctane networking. The meeting also witnessed exchange of gifts and goodies, as the mother of the groom and her friends went home with bags of Zaron cosmetics. Other attendees were Sarah-Jane Abraham, Adesuwa Uzamere, Rosemary Grotenberk and Candance Catalano from the United States and Canada. There were also Eniola Oyekanmi, Abieyuwa Erediauwa, Boma Alabi, Judith Eweka, Kemi Rockson, Simbo Ukiri, Uzo Oshogwe and Yemi Obileye, who came from Nigeria. Representing residents of the UK at the event were Maureen Bond, Temi Awofala, Eziunor Moemeke, Bose Oluwadare, Vivienne Ajeh, Abiola Fabusiwa, Iyore Eweka, Veronica Eweka, Helyn Woghiren and Flora Edoja All roads later led to St. Margaret’s
Chipstead Church in Surrey the following weekend for the upscale wedding. The venue was literarily transformed into a compound of colours as radiantly attired guests filled the length and breadth of the venue awaiting the arrival of the bride and her heartthrob. St Margaret’s, an exciting and flourishing church with an 800-year-old tradition, was just an ideal setting for the fairytale nuptial. And everyone who sensed there was something extra special in the offing was not disappointed. It was not long before the beautiful Gaby, as she was fondly called, made her grandiose entry, riding in a chauffeur-driven, open-top Cream vintage Rolls Royce. She looked stunning in her breathtaking wedding dress. Accompanied by her doting father, she gracefully made her way into the packed church to where her husband to be, Tayo Aderibigbe and guests waited. Every aspect of the ceremony that followed was beautiful and radiated love, passion, warmth and adoration. The love in the eyes of the young couple spoke volumes. The international audience of guests present beamed with delight at the excitement of the occasion. The parents and families of bride and groom, all beautifully festooned in stunning attires, looked on proudly as the ceremony, which was presided over by a lady vicar, progressed. The official joining of the couple was itself topnotch and as the newly-weds and their parents were led into the vestry for the official signing of the wedding register, the guests were treated to some captivating love songs by a trio of angelic singers. The couple was later whisked away in their stately carriage as the crowd applauded and waved cheerfully at the departing newlyweds.

The Grand Reception
The reception that followed was a display of dance styles from Africa and Brazil, as well as hip pop, poetry, music, food and more. The reception was held under a super grand marquee within the palatial 10 acres ground of Five Gables in Surrey, the stately home of Ayo and Patricia Aderibigbe, the parents of the groom. With entertainment coming from an exquisite professional saxophonist and a live Brazilian band, the latest couple made another grand entry dancing gleefully as the crowd of well dressed guests cheered at the top of their voices. Then began the admixture of rich African cultural traditions and exotic Latin American culture under the compere of Mr. C.

Obiemeta and Dr. Dapo Aderibigbe. Heartfelt speeches from the bride’s father, best man and brothers of the bride and groom, Fabio and Tobi were taken, just as the bride and the groom also addressed the guests. The parents of the groom, Ayo and Patricia Aderibigbe also treated the crowd to a suave, elegant and polished dance that got the guests up on their feet, applauding with glee. The Bride and Groom's dance was the highlight of the evening; it was a serious display of moves learnt overtime even as the bride’s father, being an accomplished Brazilian musician entertained guests as well. The guests joined in the dancing as the festivities progressed. A break was taken for the official cutting of the 5tier wedding cake and this was officiated by Maureen
Bond and Sarah Jane Abraham, friends of the Mother of the Groom. Shortly after, the couple re-emerged dressed in traditional Nigerian outfits with the groom’s family formally asking for the hand of the bride in marriage in the traditional African way. After another round of dances supervised by DJ Ivie Aderibigbe, the guests were treated to a magnificent display of fireworks as the night sky was littered with colours and sounds of happiness. Having gone round the marquee to personally appreciate guests who took time off to attend the event, the elated couple soon made their exit to begin their honeymoon even as the party continued way into the wee hours of the next day.

elebrated Nigerians joined family and friends to give a virtuous woman, Deaconess Adetoun Oladeji a very glorious farewell as she was committed to mother earth in Ibadan, Oyo State. The accomplished Deaconess, who served diligently and consistently in the vineyard of the Lord began her final journey home with a service of songs held at MOAT Pavillion, International Conference Centre, Ibadan.
The Officiating Ministers
The service of songs was such an emotional occasion for many, who used the opportunity to recount memorable moments with Deaconess Oladeji, who was fondly referred to as a mother in a million. The next day, a funeral service was held at Orita Meta Baptist Church where His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, coordinated proceedings. In his sermon, he stated that the deceased lived a fruitful and rewarding
life and left many laudable legacies. After the wondrous service, her remains were moved to the church’s cemetery where they were interred amid dust-to-dust rites and tears by her children and close family members. The funeral, which was professionally organized by 2706 Events was thereafter rounded off with a firstrate reception at the Moat Pavillion, International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

CLOCKS 50 IN GRANDSTYLE Story: Eric Elezuo Photos: Adekoya Adegbite
detutu Ayeni, the adorable wife of Chairman/CEO of Skymit Motors and unassuming businessman, Tayo Ayeni, hit the BIG 50! And the family rolled out the drums to mark it with pomp and pageantry. As a God-fearing pair, the day naturally began in the presence of the Lord as the celebrant, her darling husband, family and friends gathered at the Church of Nativity, Parkview, Ikoyi. In fact, the celebrator told us exclusively that the thanksgiving service was the most important aspect of the celebration because she had every cause to thank God for her life. The service was conducted byVenerable Tayo Aduloju, who, in his sermon, praised Mrs. Ayeni for her commitment to God’s work. With wondrous hymns and choruses the service was enlivened, while later, Tayo and Tutu Ayeni
there was a session of prayers for the good health and well being of the golden lady. Later, guests were hosted to a sumptuous reception at the Harbor Point, Victoria Island, where food and drinks were aplenty just as Shuga Band and King Sunny Ade were on hand to provide high quality entertainment. Guests who shared the moment of joy with the Ayenis included: Ogun Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun & wife, Bamidele; Ekiti Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Kwara Governor, Mr Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq; Speaker House of Representatives, Rt. DEBBIE CAPTAN CELEBRATES 45TH BIRTHDAY IN STYLE
G
Mrs. Debbie Captan-Duatey with husband, Mr. Alex Duatey
By: Ben Dzakah
hanaian business woman, gorgeous Debbie Captan has proved to the world that her nick name "glamour babe" is no fluke as she hosted a classy party to mark her 45th birthday. The celebration began the day before with photo shoot. This set the stage for a one-of-its-kind party which unfolded at her home in the Spintex Area of Accra, Ghana. As expected for one who takes the things of God seriously, the event began with a praise worship and prayer session attended by family, friends and loved ones. Then, it was time for jollity as music took centre stage as guests savoured assorted meals. The ever cheerful birthday lady, always a perfect hostess, had prepared to pamper guests to breakfast, lunch and dinner-and she did not disappoint. An array of african and continental dishes were served from morning till almost midnight when guests were still rollicking. Debbie looked stunning and amazing as she took the center stage in the course of the celebration to displayed her wonderful dance moves.
That was not all, her children also presented a special, wellchoreographed that was rehearsed for many weeks.
What could be described as the highest point of the occasion was when all those born in her month were invited to join the glamour babe, and the Happy Birthday song was sang delightfully. The day ended with popping of champagnes and a toast for more life and prosperity. Indeed it was a day of love, joy and glamour for the beautiful ageless beauty. In a chat with OVATION she stated " Today, I just want to thank God
for adding another year to my life. It was a beautiful birthday organised by my husband and children. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. "I was really happy that friends that have known for many years came to surprise me.As the years go by, leaving their marks and memories, I begin to realize how beautiful and blissful a life it has been.I am grateful to God for His mercies on me and my family. I will continue to thank Him for all He has done in my life"
