"I cannot completely describe how I feel, but I can tell you that the various definitions of the word love, cannot completely define our relationship in its entirety, its depth and experience and the utter completeness we find in each other. What I felt then and the way I am feeling now, supercedes any adjective that qualifies love. -The groom, Godswill he year had just started but there will be very few weddings that will beat that of Faith Elizabeth Sakwe, the daughter of Nigeria's President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and businessman, Prince Godswill Osim Edward. The pair who confessed that what they have for each other is true unconditional love had not granted any interview during or after their highlypublicized nuptials. But in true OVATION style we convinced them to reveal their love story for this special publication. Enjoy this exclusive interview with a couple that see each other as friends who want to live happily as husband and wife forever.

do you call beauty? Beauty is anything you can enjoy that can fill your whole being with joy and sees you dancing as everything you have planned flows into success and happiness. You know that there are no hitches or loopholes. That is beauty. I will say that, because God’s hand is involved in the whole affair, God has seen us through. Like I keep telling people about this our union, His faith has brought about the manifestation of God’s will. So, when God’s will is at play, you should expect beauty. It was more than beautiful. It was the will of God in full manifestation.

I have covered so many weddings in my years as a Journalist, I can see tha the friendship, not even love now, the friendship between both of you is genuine, how did this all start

Godswill: First of all, let me thank you for your time. Indeed, it was beautiful. It was exciting because you see, what I tell people is that, ‘ When you see God’s hand in something, there is no way it will not turn out beautifully.’ When destiny comes to play, everything goes effortlessly. What

Faith: It all started back in school; he was in his final year and I was just a fresher. I was naïve about the school’s system and I needed a guardian to put me through. The next day, when I went to school, I met him and we became friends, just like that. He was guiding me through the school’s system and

Godswill: Tout d'abord, permettez- moi de vous remercier pour votre temps. En effet, c’était très beau. C'était passionnant parce que vous voyez, ce que je dis aux gens c’est : « Quand vous voyez la main de Dieu en quelque chose, il n'y a aucun moyen pour que cela ne se déroule pas à merveille. " Quand le destin est en jeu, tout se passe sans effort. Comment définissez-vous la beauté? La beauté

est tout ce dont vous pouvez jouir et qui peut remplir tout votre être de joie et qui vous fait danser lorsque tout ce que vous avez prévu ce passe à merveille. Vous constaté qu’il n’y a aucun obstacle, aucune lacune. C'est ça la beauté. Je dirai que, comme la main de Dieu était impliquée, Dieu nous a aidés. Comme je continue à le dire aux gens, la foi en Lui a provoqué la manifestation de la volonté de Dieu. Ainsi, lorsque la volonté de Dieu est en jeu, vous devriez vous attendre à quelque chose de beau. C’était plus que beau. C'était la volonté de Dieu en pleine manifestation. J'ai couvert beaucoup de mariages dans ma carrière de journaliste depuis 20 ans, je peux voir l’amitié, pas même l'amour mais l'amitié entre vous deux ; comment tout cela a débuté

Faith: Tout a commencé à l'école ; il était dans sa dernière année et je venais juste d’entrer à l’université. J'étais naïve par rapport au système de l'école et j'avais besoin d'un tuteur pour m’aider. Le lendemain, quand je suis allée à l’école, je l'ai rencontré et nous sommes devenus amis, juste comme ça. Il me guidait à travers le système scolaire, m’aidait à garder ma tête droite et d’être focalisée. Nous sommes devenus des amis proches. C’était sans condition au début, mais de l’amitié cela a grandi pour devenir

Godswill: No, we were not. I was studying History and International Relations. She was in the Faculty of Law while I was in the Faculty of Arts. At what stage did it occur to you that this is the woman you want to settle down with

Godswill: It is very difficult to find young ladies who are humble, down-to-earth and attached to vision. She is quite young but she knows what she wants out of life. Back then, I did not know her background but when I eventually discovered her background, I thought to myself that this girl has undoubtedly has got a good home training. Faith: I never told him who I was or where I was coming from. I went into the school as a different person because I wanted real friends, people who would relate to me based on who

I really am and not because of where I am coming from. I went to school on a low profile. It took about two years for him to get to know who I really was. You were talking about her home training

Godswill: Il est très difficile de trouver des jeunes femmes qui sont humbles, terre-à- terre et attachées à leur vision. Elle est très jeune mais elle sait ce qu'elle veut de la vie. À l’époque, je ne connaissais pas son milieu social, mais quand je l’ai finalement découvert, je me suis dit que cette fille a sans aucun doute reçu une bonne éducation à la maison. Faith: Je ne lui avais jamais dit qui j'étais et d’où je venais. Je suis allée à l'école comme une personne différente parce que je voulais de vrais amis, des gens qui m’approcheront en fonction de qui je suis vraiment et non à cause d’où je viens. Je garde un profil bas à l'école. Il a fallu environ deux ans pour qu’il apprenne qui j'étais vraiment. Vous parliez de sa formation à domicile

Godswill: Ce qui m'a frappé, c'est l'humilité de ses parents, surtout son père. Les deux ne dédaignent pas les gens et ne vous jugent pas en fonction de votre milieu. Quand j'ai appris à connaître ses origines, j'ai réalisé qu'elle était en effet d'une bonne famille pour avoir gardé un profil bas à l’école. Je pouvais voir qu'elle était certainement une réplique de ses parents. C'est rare de nos jours. Je pourrais la guider et lui dire quoi faire et quoi ne pas faire et elle écouterait. Sa soumission m'a impressionné, parce que je me suis dit, que vouloir de plus chez une femme ? Il y avait beaucoup

de choses que les jeunes femmes de son âge faisaient, mais elle a choisi de rester focalisée. Une chose très importante est qu’elle aime les enfants ; confiez-lui votre enfant et en deux heures, vous n’allez plus reconnaître cet enfant. Cela ne la dérange pas de dépenser son dernier centime sur le bébé. Tout d’abord, je sais que je vais quelque part dans la vie et j'ai besoin d'une femme qui peut prendre soin de mes enfants et pas une femme qui est dans les rues alors que moi aussi j’y suis. A la fin de la journée, ce que nous devenons dans la vie ce n'est pas pour nous mais pour les enfants. Nos parents ont réussi à élever des enfants humbles et craignant Dieu, nous devons aussi élever une génération qui sera comme nous ou mieux que nous. J'ai vu un partenaire ; J'ai vu quelqu'un qui peut m'aider à fonder une famille. J'ai vu quelqu'un avec qui je pourrais passer le reste de ma vie. Je ne veux pas perdre de temps. Comment a été votre première rencontre avec ses parents

Faith: Ce sont des gens merveilleux que toute belle-fille souhaiterait avoir. Ils sont très sympathiques et gentils. La première fois que sa mère m'a vue, elle n'avait aucune idée de qui j'étais et elle ne m'a pas dédaignée. Il m'a ramené à la maison en tant qu’amie. Elle lui a dit: Cette fille est ma fille. Je ne peux pas l’expliquer, mais mon esprit l’aime. C'est ainsi que j'ai collé avec ses parents. Quand elle vous a emmené pour la première fois à la maison, comment était-ce

of all, I know I am going somewhere in life and I need a woman who can take care of my kids and not a woman who is out on the streets while I am also out on the streets. At the end of the day, what we become in life is not for ourselves but for those children. Our parents succeeded in raising humble and God-fearing kids, we should also raise a generation that will be like us or better than us. I saw a partner; I saw someone that can help me raise a family. I saw someone I could spend the rest of my life with. I did not want to delay. What was your first meeting with his parents like

Faith: They are such wonderful people that any daughter-in-law would wish for. They are very friendly and nice people. The first time his mum saw me, she had no idea who I was and she did not despise me. He brought me home as a friend then. She told him then, ‘This girl is my daughter. I prayed that there would be no accidents or deaths, because most times, you hear of crashes and all, when people are traveling to weddings. I prayed for smooth and successful event devoid of such incidents. And I am happy Godswill was done. (smiles)

LES FIANCAILLES ... DE CROSS RIVER AVEC AMOUR Yenogoa, la capitale de l'Etat de Bayelsa, a été le premier arrêt de ce passionnant mariage et toute la ville était en effervescence. Le raison pour une sécurité supplémentaire ce weekend-là était évidente, les fiançailles devaient avoir lieu dans la maison personnelle du président, dans le cœur même de Yenogoa. Il n'y avait pas de place pour les resquilleurs. Il y avait tellement de points de contrôle et l'entrée dans la maison était plus difficile que le chameau biblique passant par le chas d'une aiguille. Tout a commencé avec une cérémonie très privée en présence de seuls les membres et amis des deux familles. K I C K S O FF W E D D I N G C E R E M O N I E S t was a wedding that we will all remember for long. It was a wedding like no other in terms of class, style, colour, glamour and first-rate attendance. It was an event filled with dazzling jewels, gorgeous gowns and some of Nigeria's biggest celebrities. Yes, the nuptials between Faith Elizabeth Sakwe and Prince Godswill Osim Edward was different because it was the very first-ever such ceremony to be hosted by Nigeria's current first family: H.E. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. Well in case you are wondering, Faith, the beautiful bride, is the President's adopted daughter-and so the family pulled all the stops to ensure that this love-filled relationship was not only celebrated with fanfare but cemented in grandeur. After so much tooing and frooing, the dates for the different ceremonies were eventually agreed on by both families-and everybody who was somebody in Nigeria began to reset their itineraries, knowing full well that this was not an event to be missed. Little wonder that in April of 2014, the country was abuzz.

The venue for this very traditional introduction ceremony meant for both families to formally meet was a specially decorated marquee mounted on the grounds of the Jonathan's family home. First to arrive were some members of the bride's family, and then with a lot of singing, dancing and fanfare, the groom, his parents and family were heralded into the venue. They were led by Cross River

State Governor, H.E. Liyel Imoke and wife, Obioma. The first citizens of Cross River both played very prominent roles throughout the wedding and seem to have close ties with the young couple. Proceedings began with the arrival of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Dame Patience Jonathan. They were very relaxed as they went round to exchange pleasantries with their in-laws and other guests. It must be said that unlike many occasions were the President is in attendance, the Presidential security officials were firm but civil, friendly and professional. There was no incident of pushing, shouting or shoving.

THE INTRODUCTION...FROM CROSS RIVER WITH LOVE Yenogoa, the capital of Bayelsa State was the first stop of this exciting wedding train-and the whole town was on lock down. The reason for the extra security that weekend was obvious, the engagement was to be held in the personal home of the President in the heart of Yenogoa. There was no room for gate-crashers. There were so many screening points and entry into the house was tougher than the Biblical camel passing through the eye of a needle. Les premiers à arriver étaient des membres de la famille de la mariée, puis avec beaucoup de chants, de danses et de fanfare, le marié, ses parents et sa famille firent leur entrée. Ils étaient accompagnés du gouverneur de l’État de Cross River, S.E. Liyel Imoke et sa femme, Obioma. La cérémonie a débuté avec l'arrivée du président Goodluck Ebele Jonathan et Dame Patience Jonathan. Ils étaient très détendus ; ils ont salué les beauxparents et les invités. Il faut dire que, contrairement à de nombreuses cérémonies auxquelles le Président a pris part, les agents de la sécurité présidentielle étaient fermes mais civiles, amicaux et professionnels. Il n’y a eu aucun incident de débandade. Ce fut une nouvelle facette du personnel de sécurité qui a vraiment surpris beaucoup en particulier les photojournalistes.

"We will continue to pray for you. Our duty as parents is to continue to pray for you, to encourage you, and if there are little problems that we think we can solve, to help you resolve them. Don’t rely on your parents to solve your matrimonial problems. If you have a disagreement with your husband, both of you have to resolve that disagreement. Don’t always go to parents to seek advice from your mothers and fathers. Sometimes, they will not give you the best advice because your parents are analogue people. You are a digital generation” -President Goodluck Jonathan This was a new side of the security personnel that really surprised many, especially the photojournalists. The whole event was anchored by The Moderator, who is a member of the President's family. Very knowledgeable about the Ijaw tradition, the compere was as witty as he was serious, and steered the ceremony expertly. He began with introductions of the bride's family members and then with his face as straight and unsmiling as that of a soldier on the parade ground, asked the Osim Edward Family their mission to the President's house. The groom's family representative stuttered as he began to respond and The Moderator stopped him mid sentence to ask him to relax "don't look at my bone face" he added in pidgin English and this elicited laughter from 38

all corners of the room, and diffused whatever tension there was in the room. The Representative told everyone that their son, Prince Edward had informed them that he had seen a lovely flower in the Jonathan Household that he admires and want to take as wife. He then presented some drinks which he said was to "water the ground" as tradition demands and also as a sign of friendship. After the usual lively banter by representatives of the two families, the small matter of the bride price was on the agenda! This was a very exciting segment as the families haggled for minutes at the end of the day, they agreed on N51,000! There was laughter all round as Mr. President insisted that the family should only pay

Le représentant de la famille du marié bégaya lorsqu’il a commencé à parler et Chief Gabriel l’interrompit en lui demandant de se détendre et lui a dit: "ne regarde pas mon visage osseux" at-il ajouté en Anglais Pidgin et cela a suscité des rires de tous les coins de la salle, et cela a apaisé toute tension qu'il y avait dans. Le représentant a révélé à tous que leur fils, le prince Edward, les avait informés qu'il avait vu une belle fleur dans la famille de Jonathan et qu’il voulait la prendre comme épouse. Après les formalités habituelles faites par les représentants des deux familles, ce fut le temps pour la dot. Ce fut un une partie très excitante ; lesdeux familles ont discuté du montant et à la fin elles se sont convenues sur N51, 000! Le Président a insisté pour que la famille paie seulement N50, 000 et garde N1, 000 comme une dette qu'ils pourraient exiger à tout moment dans l'avenir. Par la suite, les familles ont échangé des boissons à la grande joie de toutes les personnes présentes.

Cependant, au cours de son discours, le représentant de la famille du marié a appelé à tort la mariée Rose et cela a encore ajoute du fun à la cérémonie. Bientôt, ce fut le moment pour que la "fleur" que la famille du marié était venue arracher leur soit officiellement présentée. Faith, la mariée, a ensuite été invitée dans la salle. Elle était le point de mire de tous les regards et brillait comme mille étoiles dans son habit traditionnel. Voil ce qui s’ensuivit : Chief Gabriel: Faith ma fille, nous sommes ici et nous avons vu une délégation très puissante conduite par le gouverneur de l’État de Cross River. Beaucoup de personnes sont venues et nous avons pensé que si un gouverneur visite un Président, notre gouverneur doit également être ici et d'autres chefs traditionnels devraient aussi nous rejoindre pour divertir les visiteurs afin qu'ils puissent partir; mais nous avons été choqués quand ils nous ont dit maintenant qu'ils ont vu une fleur telle que vous dans cette maison, un avocat, et étonnamment, ils ont même cité l'année à laquelle vous avez obtenu votre diplôme d’avocat et l'année à laquelle vous avez été appelée à la barre . Ils connaissaient tous vos prénoms, y compris le nom de votre père. Cela signifie que la chose est allée loin - très loin. Seriously, we thank God for today. Young man, I congratulate you. It’s not easy to come and take a wife from here, so you are a very strong person. You have to thank your father and mother. You’ve paid the money we have asked you to pay but we cannot release our daughter now because it is too late. If you come around noon tomorrow, then we will release our daughter to you. N50,000 and keep the N1,000 as a debt that they could demand for anytime in the future. Thereafter, the families exchanged drinks to the delight of everyone present. However, in the course of his speech, the representative of the groom's family mistakenly referred to the bride as Rose-and this did not go down well with her family members. It all added to the fun of the occasion. Soon, it was time for the "flower" that the groom's family had come to pluck to be officially presented to them. Faith, the bride, was then invited to the venue. She was the cynosure of all eyes and shimmered like a thousand stars in her simple traditional attire.

This was the encounter that ensued: Chief Robert Enuogha: Faith my daughter, we were here and we saw a very powerful delegation that is being led by the Governor of Cross River State. So many persons came in and we thought that if a Governor visits a President, our Governor must also be here and other traditional rulers should also join us to entertain the visitors so that they can go; but we were shocked when they now told us that they have seen one flower in this house, pretty as you are, a Lawyer as you are, and surprisingly they even quoted the year you graduated as a Lawyer and the year you were called to 42

bar. They knew all your middle names, including your father’s name. It means the thing has gone far – very far. So, I want to ask, on behalf of your father and mother, the Governor and very many others that are here, whether you are aware of their coming and whether we can take any drink that is being presented here to us. This I ask because the way this is going, in a short while, we may no longer see you as we used to see you. And so, we should drink from them. I want to ask you again on behalf of the Bayelsans that are here, and on behalf of your parents, are you aware of their coming? Faith: My parents and elders, I am aware. (Applause) The Moderator: Faith, you may turn back and look at the people on the other side. She said she’s aware of your coming. We also want to ask whether this is the Faith that you described because ladies named Faith and of average height are many in our family; Lawyers are very many and they are all beautiful. I want to ask now whether this is actually the Faith that you have described and have come for? Groom’s Rep: My elders, this is the Faith that has brought us here. (Applause) Elder: My colleague, all of you cannot marry our daughter. There’s somebody that has prompted your visit here. There is someone that has had to bring people as high as the Governor of Cross River State to lead your delegation here. Can you now formally introduce that young man? Groom’s Rep: Your Excellences, Your Majesties, we have come as you have said to ask for Faith for our son. Our son who will marry Faith if you grant us the permission is Godswill Osim Edward. Elder: Faith, too many young and handsome men are seated here. You own this project. Can you tell your parents and this house, the family, the Bayelsa community whether the man standing before me is your husband to be? Faith: My parents and my elders, yes, I know him. As soon as Faith revealed that she indeed knew the man who had stood before the elders, there was joy and applause from all present. The groom had attempted to move close to the bride but she was shielded from his touch and gingerly shepherded out of the venue. That was the end of this exhilarating segment. Day one ended with a very exciting speech by Mr. President. He jocularly said that left for him, he would have asked the groom's delegation for the April Allocation of Cross River State as bride price! The bride told us that every aspect of the ceremony was carefully planned to express culture and colour-and it was obvious that the Event Planner, Rita Idehen whose company Blu Victoria handled most of the decor with the supervision of Mrs. Yemisi Oyewole, a close friend of First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, her wishes were carried out to the letter. At the Traditional Wedding, the decor was breath-taking. From the special carpets with Faith & Godswill Happy Ever After inscribed on the

corners to the arabian-style decorative pieces complete with candle stand, flowers and elegant golden rotunda area, the whole concept was a spectacle to behold. No one walked into that venue without exclaiming and applauding the decor! Just like a day before, the security in and around the venue was water tight, and many had to watch the event from big screens mounted outside the house despite having the invitation because they had arrived slightly late. LE MARIAGE TRADITIONNEL

Le deuxième jour était pour le mariage traditionnel et il a été célébré à l'intérieur d'une énorme tente, une des deux tentes montées dans la résidence privée du Président Jonathan. La mariée nous a dit que tous les aspects de la cérémonie ont été soigneusement planifiés pour exprimer la culture et la couleur et il était évident que le planificateur d'événements, Rita Idehen avec sa société Blu Victoria, se soient occupés de la décoration avec la supervision de Mme Yemisi Oyewole, une proche et amie de Dame Patience Jonathan ; ses souhaits ont été réalisées à la lettre. Au mariage traditionnel, le décor était à couper le souffle. Des tapis spéciaux sur lesquels était inscrit ‘’Faith & Godswill Happy Ever After’’ , aux pièces décoratives complètes de style arabe, des fleurs au à la rotonde élégamment décorée, le concept présentait un spectacle magnifique. était serrée, et beaucoup ont dû assister à l'événement sur le grand écran monté à l'extérieur de la maison malgré l'invitation parce qu'ils étaient arrivés un peu en retard. Ce fut le rigolo Chief qui une fois encore a pris dirigé la cérémonie qui a commencé lorsque le Président, la Première Dame, le vice-président, Arch. Namadi Sambo et sa femme, Hajia Amina, le Président du Sénat, le sénateur David Mark et sa femme, Helen avec certains gouverneurs et leurs épouses ont fait leur entrée d’une manière spéciale. Chief Gabriel s’occupa de l'aspect traditionnel, mais les animateurs de la soirée étaient des experts en la matière à savoir: Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi, Ebere Mark Acharike et le vétéran à la voix veloutée, Moji Makanjuola. Avec la salle archicomble, et des gens au dehors, la cérémonie a officiellement débuté avec les propos du président de la cérémonie qui n'était autre que le viceprésident du Nigeria, Arch. arrived for the wedding proper to begin. Looking dashing and wearing an infectious smile, Godswill danced into the arena led by Governor and Mrs. Imoke. They were heralded by cheers. The groom wore a smart traditional attire complete with a walk stick. It was obvious that he was enjoying every moment of the momentous occasion. He soon went to the top table to greet his parents and paid homage to the President, First Lady and the other dignitaries. Interestingly Mr. President, the First Lady and other members of the Jonathan Family wore no airs as they stood up to savour the occasion with Godswill, they swayed lovingly to the rhythmic traditional music that was being played by the Amange Music 80

Ministry as they exchanged greetings with their in-laws. While all these was going on, the bride was busy getting ready, OVATION exclusively learnt that she had laid out three outfits to be worn that day. Her attire was a very regal beaded outfit enhanced with a beaded tiara and walk stick which were reminiscent of an African Queen. Faith, just like tradition demands, was well covered up. As it is the norm, another lady was also covered up in a similar fashion as disguise when they were led into the venue by elderly Ijaw women. There was a short performance by a cultural troupe from Cross River State before Governor Liyel Imoke took centre stage to address the gathering as the Head of Delegation of the groom's family. "Let me, on behalf of my dear wife, Obioma, and the wonderful people of

Cross River State, first express our deep appreciation to Mr. President and his family for this particular honour that has been done to the wonderful people of Cross River State. " Mr. President, a few years back, you may not remember, you gave me a call and whispered to me that your precious daughter would be coming to Cross River State to go to school. You were then the Vice President sir, if you recall, and it was a whisper which we tried to keep under wraps but everything that is kept under wraps, every secret, everything that you bury, one day, it will come to the fore, and that is what has happened today sir. "When you called me, we did not

Il alla bientôt à la table pour saluer ses parents et a rendu hommage au Président, à la Première Dame et aux autres dignitaires. Le Président, la Première Dame et les autres membres de la famille de Jonathan étaient très détendus, lorsqu’ils se sont levés pour saluer Godswill. Ils se balançaient avec amour au son de la musique traditionnelle qui a été jouée par un orchestre live, et ont échangé des salutations avec leurs beaux-parents. We had thought that she would go to school, get her Law degree – which she did very well – and indeed, went on to finish her Law school very well but this time around, she came back in a different way. And that is the beauty of Cross River State sir. We are accommodating and we are very friendly. "Yesterday, we had the real traditional marriage and we crossed the seas, the waters and the rivers to come to Bayelsa State, to this family, to make a plea, to allow us to take the wonderful daughter of the first family back home with us. When we came, we came with trepidation. We came knowing the type of place we were coming to. We came, hoping that at the end of the day, we would be able to meet all that is required to be able to get the blessings of Faith’s parents. "After what was a very tedious exercise, I must say that I got the deal of the century: but in getting the deal of the century from Mr. President and his dear wife, Mr. President made sure that his lovely daughter, this beautiful bride, Faith, was given to us but he gave her to us on a condition and that is after we had made all the promises and commitments to look after this his lovely daughter, to take good care of her and to make sure she doesn’t miss Bayelsa State, Mr. President insisted that we must do many things. The first one was that we should pay a bride price of fifty one thousand naira less one thousand naira. So, we still owe one thousand naira which Mr. President says he will hold us to, making sure that we do to Faith all that we have promised. Secondly, he said that we

Il y a eu un court spectacle d'une troupe culturelle de l’État de Cross River avant que le gouverneur Liyel Imoke ne monte sur scène pour faire un discours en tant que chef de la délégation de la famille du marié. Permettez-moi, au nom de ma chère épouse, Obioma, et des gens merveilleux de l’État de Cross River, d’exprimer d’abord notre profonde gratitude à Monsieur le Président et à sa famille pour ce grand honneur qui a été fait pour les gens merveilleux de l’État de Cross River. Monsieur le Président, il y a quelques années, vous ne pouviez pas vous retenir et vous m'aviez appelé et m'aviez chuchoté que votre fille précieuse viendrait à l’État de Cross River pour ses études. Vous étiez alors vice-président, si vous vous en souveniez, et cela fut un secret que nous avions caché, mais tout ce qui est tenu secret, tous les secrets, tout ce que vous enterrez, un jour, il se dévoilera, et c'est ce qui s'est passé aujourd’hui.

Lorsque vous m’aviez appelé, on n’envisageait pas ceci. On pensait qu’elle ferait ses études, , qu’elle obtiendrait son diplôme en droit, ce qu’elle a d’ailleurs brillamment accompli, mais elle est revenue différente et c'est ça, Monsieur, la beauté de l’État Cross River. Aujourd'hui, nous sommes très fiers et très honorés en tant que peuple merveilleux de l’Etat de Cross River. Hier, nous avons eu le vrai mariage traditionnel et nous avons traversé les mers, les eaux et les rivières pour venir à l'Etat de Bayelsa, dans cette famille, et de faire un plaidoyer, pour nous permettre de prendre la fille merveilleuse de la première famille. Quand nous sommes arrivés, nous sommes venus avec appréhension. Nous savions où nous allions. Nous sommes venus, espérant qu'à la fin de la journée, nous serions en mesure de répondre à tout ce qui est nécessaire pour être en mesure d'obtenir les bénédictions des parents de Faith. Après ce qui a été un exercice très pénible, je dois dire que j'ai eu l'affaire du siècle: mais avant d’obtenir cette affaire du siècle du Président et de sa chère épouse, le Président a fait en sorte que sa fille, cette belle mariée, Faith, nous soit donnée sous condition et qu’on ne la prendrait qu’après avoir fait toutes les promesses et pris tous les engagements pour s'occuper de sa fille, de prendre bien soin d'elle et de s'assurer que l'Etat de Bayelsa ne lui manquera pas. Le Président a insisté pour que nous fassions beaucoup de choses. La première était que nous payions une dot de cinquante et un mille Nairas moins mille Nairas. Donc, nous devons encore mille Nairas que Le Président a dit qu’il gardera afin que nous prenions bien soin de Faith comme on l’a promis. Deuxièmement, il a dit que nous ne pouvions pas 89

prendre Faith ; nous en étions tous un peu inquiets et choqués, car on croyait avoir réussi cette affaire en remportant le contrat du siècle, mais Le Président a dit: ’’Allez et revenez demain." Donc nous sommes partis et nous sommes revenus mieux préparés. Comme vous pouvez le voir monsieur, nous sommes allés nous recharger et nous réarmer et nous sommes revenus pleinement préparés avec l'espoir, que vous nous remettrez, Monsieur Le President, Faith aujourd’hui. M. le Président, nous vous remercions de l'honneur qui nous est fait, au peuple de Cross River, à cette humble famille que vous avez jugé bon de permettre à votre belle fille de faire partie. Comme vous le savez, Faith arrive dans une famille de l’État de Cross River, mais plus particulièrement dans mon propre gouvernement local. Et donc pour nous, nous apportons une princesse et une reine qui brillera dans notre gouvernement local et dans notre Etat ; je veux vous assurer que Faith est en de bonnes mains, que nous allons prendre bien soin d'elle et que nous allons revenir aussi souvent que nous le voulons. As you know sir, Faith is coming into a family in Cross River State but more specifically into my own local government. "And so for us, we bring a princess and a queen that will shine in our local government and in our state. I want to assure you sir that Faith is in good hands; that we will take good care of her and that we will come back as often as we have to. We will also love you to know sir that we will always put out the warm welcome of the people of Cross River State anytime you or the First lady come to visit Cross River. It is our culture and tradition that we welcome you honourably. So, on behalf of the wonderful people of Cross River State, we say thank you and God bless you sir" His speech was immediately followed by that of the host Governor, His Excellency Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State: "Your Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic, in whom we are pleased.I welcome you. Let me also welcome his ever supportive, everloving and charming wife, Dame Dr. Patience Jonathan, the First Lady. I’d like to appreciate Mr. Chairman of this great occasion, the Vice President of the Federal Republic who is here with his ever supportive and loyal wife. Mr. Vice President, while thanking you for your continued loyalty and support to the President, I would also like to thank you on behalf of our people for allowing Hajiya Amina to be here to

support the First Lady for the past three days. "Let me recognize the stabilizing factor in the National Assembly, the President of the Senate, you mean several things to us in this state. In addition to appreciating him for being the stabilizing force in that great institution of our democracy let me also appreciate him for allowing Madam Helen to be here for the past three days. Let me recognise the presence of our National Chairman whom Mr. President calls the able game-changer and I think that in addition to that, he is a turnaround expert; I appreciate you sir. "Let me also recognise all members of the National Working Committee of our great party who are here. I appreciate all members of the National Assembly and their wives here present. Let me recognise all the governors, my dear wonderful and supportive colleagues from Jigawa and Gombe in the North down to Delta and Anambra; the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and all of you who are here. I appreciate all of you, my dear wife and all the wives of the governors who have been here for several days now. "I’ll like particularly to appreciate at this point, my dear elder brother, Governor Liyel Imoke, and his gracious wife, Obioma, who has been very supportive. Mrs. Imoke has been here several times and also, Liyel has been here all through. This is the second day he is spending here. I want to appreciate you for that. "Captains of industry, friends and families, let me appreciate also, the bride and groom, because, as you know, this traditional bit is the most

Même la Bible a dit que celui qui trouve une femme trouve une bonne chose et obtient la grâce du Seigneur. En tant que chef temporel de cet Etat, l'Etat de Faith, je tiens à vous prononcer bénis. Vous voyez, ce n'est pas seulement les parents qui bénissent; toute personne dans une position de leadership et d'autorité bénit. Donc, au lieu d’être une déception pour nous et pour vos parents, vous continuerez à être une bénédiction pour votre pays au Nom de Jésus. Nos gens ont un dicton pendant ce genre de cérémonie traditionnelle ; nous disons que le navire ne se brise pas. Nous disons aussi que le vin dans la cuve ne se reproduise pas. Prions aussi que le grenier continue de déborder et que le tapis où vous allez dormir se remplisse. Amen. Je tiens à vous rassurer tous les deux que nos pensées et nos prières vont continuer à être avec Faith et son mari. Une partie de la raison pour laquelle vous nous devez encore mille Nairas, gouverneur Imoke, n'est pas seulement parce que nous ne vendons pas nos femmes. - nous ne vendons pas nos femmes en terre Ijaw. Les anciens vous diront que vous avez payé seulement pour la chair. vous n'avez pas payé pour les os. Lorsque le gouverneur Imoke a dit que le jeune homme n'est

pas seulement de son gouvernement local, mais qu’il est aussi d'une communauté très proche de la sienne, nous n'aurions pas pu rêver d'une plus grande assurance. Nous savons qu’avec le gouverneur Imoke qui a personnellement conduit la famille ici, nous n'avons pas de doute que Faith est en de bonnes mains. Vu la famille du jeune homme, nous n'avons aucun doute qu'ils ont un avenir prometteur devant eux. Je vous remercie tous d'être venus célébrer avec nous et que Dieu continue de bénir chacun d'entre nous. Ce fut un mariage présidentiel et il n'est pas surprenant que la première famille ait concoctée un bon festin pour les invités. Tout le monde a mangé et a dansé sous le son de la fanfare de la police du Nigeria lorsque la mariée et le marié sont sortis pour se changer. Cette fois, le marié portait une tunique qui lui arrivait aux genoux avec un collier traditionnel et un bonnet de velours noir avec les mots-Prince 7 brodé sur le côté, tandis que la mariée s’est parée d’un chemisier orné de bijoux qui est le point fort des femmes du Sud-Sud. Le deux se complétaient, quand ils se promenaient dans l'arène. Par la suite, ils ont été invités à couper leur gâteau et il a été habilement présidée par l'épouse du vice-président, Hajia Amina Sambo, aidé par l'épouse du Président du Sénat, Mme Helen Mark, Mme Rachael Dickson, Première Dame l'Etat de Bayelsa, Mme Obioma Imoke, Première Dame de l’État de Cross River et la grande femme d'affaires, Hajia Bola Shagaya. Toutes les femmes ont conseillé le couple de faire de l'amour leur mot d'ordre et de mettre Dieu en premier dans leur vie quotidienne. La première famille, leurs beauxparents et les hauts dignitaires ont ensuite été invités pour la photo avec le couple, après quoi le Président, très ému, a prononcé le discours de clôture. 127

The credit for moulding Faith, the credit for nurturing her, the credit for turning this young lady into an elegant woman whose hand people have come to seek in marriage, should really go to Dame Patience Jonathan. That’s why, as we appreciate what is going on, I think it is important for us to give credit to who credit is due. So, Dame Patience, thanks for moulding Faith into this delectable and promising young lady that she is. " Now to the young couple, I’ll like to say that the young man who came crossing several rivers, and also crossed several creeks in Bayelsa, to come to Otueke to marry, has done really well. I think he is a lucky guy and the good luck of this family and the good luck of this land will continue to follow you. Even the Bible has said it that he who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favour from the Lord. We know that their way shall be well. As a temporal leader of this state, Faith’s state, I’ll like to pronounce you blessed. You see, it’s not only parents who bless; anyone in a position of leadership and authority also blesses.

Quand le gouverneur de État de Cross River parlait, il a mentionné que lorsque j'étais vice-président, je lui ai dit que ma fille avait reçu une admission à l'Université de Calabar et lui ai dit qu'il devait aider à organiser son hébergement ainsi de suite. Il a accepté avec plaisir, mais avec ce qui se passe aujourd'hui, je ne pense pas que je vais envoyer ma deuxième fille à l’État de Cross River pour étudier. Ce n'est pas facile. Imoke, je ne pense pas que l'autre va venir. (rire général). Je vous remercie, vous, votre femme et mes beaux-parents. Tout d'abord, ils ont protégé ma fille alors qu'elle y séjournait pour faire ses études en droit. Il y avait une sécurité minimale et pourtant il n'y eu aucun incident. Je tiens à remercier le gouverneur, sa femme et les gens de Cross River. Aujourd'hui est un jour heureux, beaucoup de gens ont déjà dit tant de choses et je ne voudrais pas vous ennuyer. Beaucoup de gens sont venus dans mon salon ce matin ; quand ils m'ont vu, ils ne pouvaient pas me reconnaître. J'ai dit, eh bien, je me prépare à être un grand-père et je dois apparaitre différemment. Aujourd'hui est un jour spécial parce que nous donnons notre fille en mariage et c'est la joie de tous les parents. C'est cependant une joie douloureuse lorsque votre fille doit cesser d’habiter avec vous et pour vivre avec une autre personne et ne viendra de temps en temps que pour vous saluer. C'est douloureux, mais c'est une bonne chose. Donc, aujourd'hui, ma femme et moi, nous remettons notre fille aux parents de Godswill et en particulier au gouverneur de l’État de Cross River et sa femme qui ont travaillé si dur pendant plus d'un mois. Mme Imoke était en personne dans l'Etat de Bayelsa pour s’assurer que tout se déroule sans problème. Nous vous remercions et

nous sommes très reconnaissants. Pour les jeunes, le monde entier vous regarde et quand j'ai écouté l'épouse du vice-président, l'épouse du président du Sénat et tous les dignitaires qui ont supervisé la coupure du gâteau, elles ont mis l’accent sur le mot amour. Eh bien, pour un mariage réussi, l'amour est important, mais il doit y avoir de l'endurance. Quand deux personnes de différents milieux vivent ensemble, il peut y avoir quelques problèmes, sauf s’ils sont au ciel, mais si elles sont sur la terre, il peut y avoir des problèmes. Avant, vous étiez juste des amis. Probablement que vous avez su prendre les choses en main, mais maintenant que vous allez vivre ensemble, toutes les mains et les épines sortiront des deux côtes. Vous devez vous chérir et avec le temps, vous allez bien vous adapter l’un à l’autre et former un couple parfait. Félicitations. Vous êtes nos deux enfants. Je prie Dieu de vous bénir et je crois que les gens d'ici prieront pour vous ; votre mariage sera un succès. Merci beaucoup. Dame Patience was in very ebullient mood, she needed little prompting before she hit the dance floor and even joined others in taking some of the choruses to the delight of all. She was really in high spirits and joyous on account of her daughter, Faith and husband, Godswill.

une soirée pour laisser tomber les manières, pour se détendre et s'amuser, et beaucoup portaient des habits très simples mais chics. La Première Dame a choisi un habit de couleur jaune, la mariée a choisi une robe moulante et le marié portait un tee-shirt bleu et un pantalon. L'événement qui était strictement par invitation et qui était animé par Ebere Young et Dayo Benjamin Laniyi s’est déroulé en douceur. Les premiers à monter sur scène étaient le Sharp Band. Les diverses chansons d’amour chantées pas le groupe étaient si émouvantes que le couple et leurs amis ont passé plusieurs minutes sur la piste de danse. Ensuite, ce fut le tour du maître de Kukere ; il était vraiment énergique dans sa prestation à tel point que la Première Dame s’est mise sur ses pieds

pour danser avec la mère du marié et ses proches amies. Dame Patience s’était vraiment amusée. Les jumeaux Mamuzee de Bayelsa sont également montés sur scène ; ils ont ému le public pendant quelques minutes et leur prestation a été beaucoup appréciée. Iyanya fut de retour et la salle entière était sur ses pieds pour chanter et danser sur ses airs populaires. La soirée a atteint son crescendo quand Psquare est monté sur scène. De leur première chanson, à la dernière, il était évident qu'ils étaient les stars de la nuit. Dame Patience était vraiment en bonne humeur et en joie à cause de sa fille, Faith et de son mari, Godswill. Cette dernière séquence de la cérémonie à Bayelsa s'est donc terminée avec joie et les gens ont applaudi et crié jusqu'aux petites heures du matin. 165

them. Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us and may God continue to bless all of us. This was a Presidential wedding and it was no surprise that the first family laid out a good feast for guests. It was while everyone was eating and rollicking to a medley of evergreen songs by the Nigeria Police Band that the bride and groom sneaked out of the arena to change their outfits. This time the groom wore a white knee-length tunic and wrapper with a local riverine neckwear and a black velvet cap with the words Prince 7 embroidered on its side while the bride was decked in heavily jewelled blouse with wrapper that is common among South South Women. They both complemented each other as they strolled into the arena. Thereafter, they were invited to cut their cake and it was ably officiated by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Amina Sambo, assisted by wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Helen Mark, Mrs. Seriake Rachael-Dickson,(Phd.) First Lady Bayelsa State, Mrs. Obioma Imoke, First Lady, Cross River State and top businesswoman, Hajia Bola Shagaya. All the women advised the couple to make love their watchword and to put God first in their daily lives. The first family, their in-laws and the top dignitaries were then invited for photo calls with the couple after which a very elated Mr. President delivered the closing remarks. "When the Governor of Cross River State was speaking, he mentioned that when I was Vice-President, I called him that my daughter had received an admission to the University of Calabar and told him that he had to assist with 200

arranging accommodation and so on. He gladly accepted but with what is happening today, I don’t think I will send my second daughter to Cross River State to school again. It is not easy. Imoke, I don’t think another one will come. (general laughter). "I have to thank you and your wife and my in-laws for everything. First, they protected my daughter while she was staying there to do her Law programme; there was minimal security, if at all there was any, and there was no incident. I have to thank the Governor, his wife and the good people of Cross River. Today is a happy day, many people have said so much and I wouldn’t want to bore you. "Many people came into my sitting room this morning and saw me and couldn’t recognise me. I said, well, I’m preparing to be a grandfather and I have to look different. Today is a special day because we are giving out our daughter in marriage and that is the joy of all parents. It is however a painful joy when your daughter has to stop living with you and proceeds to live with another person and will only come occasionally to greet you. It’s painful but it’s a very joyful thing. “So, today, my wife and I, as we hand over our daughter to Godswill’s parents and especially the Governor of Cross River State and his wife who have worked so hard for over a month. Mrs. Imoke has virtually been living in Bayelsa State to make sure that this marriage will hold without issues. We thank you and we are most grateful. “For the young couple, the whole world is looking at you and when I listened to the VP’s wife, the Senate President’s wife and all the dignitaries

Si les cérémonies traditionnelles de Bayelsa pouvaient être décrites comme grandes, alors la célébration et la réception à Abuja, la capitale Fédérale du Nigeria ne peut qu’être grandiose. Le couple et leurs parents ont été emportés par une vague d'affection lorsque les Nigérians et les étrangers sont venus partager leur moment de joie. Dès six heures du matin, à l’intérieur de la Villa Présidentielle du Nigeria, en ce qui peut être encore appelé le plus beau jour de sa vie, Faith était déjà sur pied et prête à commencer les préparatifs avec l'aide de la célèbre artiste de maquillage, Banke Meshida de BMpro. La mariée avait un ensemble complet d'assistantes dont une coiffeuse. L’équipe d’Ovation qui étaient présente a révélé que Faith et ses dames d’honneur avaient conclu une séance de prières quelques minutes plus tôt ; elles étaient donc toutes optimistes que la journée sera lumineuse, belle et réussie. On habillait également son entourage: Esther Jose & Ibimina Fiberesima (demoiselles d'honneur), Kelechi Onwugharam, Endurance Paul, Enobong James, Faith Davies, Emomotimi Asayomo, Timilade Gita, Rita Odubo, Hannah Paulker, Ebika Abiri et Vivian Agadaga (les femmes de chambre de la mariée), Arubai Jonathan et Azibadigiri Aaron (les porteuses des ballons) avec faveur Omonibeke et Vanessa Edward (les petites princesses). Pour sa journée spéciale, la mariée a choisi un certain nombre d'ivoire avec un corsage très élégant. Le corsage, a été rehaussé avec des bijoux et des pierres étincelantes. Le voile était en soie très doux qui a

donné un effet romantique. Le voile de sa robe était très long. Beaucoup ont même pense que c’est le voile le plus long dans l'histoire du Nigeria! Quant à ses chaussures, elle ne s’est pas contentée des moindres ; elle a opté pour des chaussures Jimmy Choo. Pendant ce temps, dans un hôtel de luxe de la ville, le marié était aussi occupé. Pour sa journée spéciale, il a choisi un noir très simple, un élégant costume Tom Ford. Son parrain, le prince Hodo Osim Edward portait une tenue similaire à celle des hommes de l'autre marié: Patrick Ekunke, Emmanuel Umunze, Nsikak Fyneface, Uwem Johnson, Henry Agwu, David Okon, Laurent Etim, Idim Bassey, Ebiegberi Barigha, Ita Ita et Akeem Ibrahim. Les pages, Ariwera Jonathan, Gabriel Awi et Peter Awi portaient également de beaux costumes ; même le petit prince, Fikayomi Oyewole était fringant dans son costume. Alors que la mariée et le marié s’apprêtaient, dans une autre partie de la villa présidentielle, le Président et la Première Dame se préparaient également ; ils étaient tous désireux d’arriver à 10h, temps prévu au Centre National Chrétien, Central Business District, le lieu de la célébration. Le centre de la ville d'Abuja était immobile ce jour-là car toutes les routes menant à l'église et la réception ont été bloquées et la circulation perturbée. Il y avait beaucoup de curieux le long des rues à certains endroits qui espéraient apercevoir le couple lorsqu’ils se rendraient à l'église. De nombreux invités ont dû garer leurs véhicules très loin et des bus ont été fournis pour faire la navette.

For marriage to have love without endurance, e no go happen o. "When two people with different backgrounds stay together, there must be some issues, except they’re in heaven; but if they are on earth, there’ll be issues. Before this time, you were just friends; probably you’ve been handling yourselves so well but now that you’re going to live together, all the hands and spines will come out from both parties. You have to enjoy yourselves and after a while you’ll blend and make a perfect couple. Congratulations. "You are both our children. I pray to God to bless you and I believe that with the people here praying for you, your marriage will be a successful one. Thank you very much. Faith, now you’re leaving your home, you have another senior father and a senior mother. They are to take care of you from now on. You are now their daughter just as Godswill is my first son now. So I am formally handing you over to two of them to be supported by the Governor and the wife. You’re a lucky girl and they took care of you for the five years that you stayed in Calabar to school. They will even take care of you more now that the whole world has seen that we have formally handed you over to them. Congratulations Godswill; thank you all". His final words was trailed by a wondrous applause. Later that evening the First Lady hosted an After Traditional Marriage party at the top-rate, 5-star facility 204

called the Aridorf Resort, Wellness & Spa. The Main Hall located in the classy facility's Entertainment Centre was the venue of the highly entertaining evening. It was an evening to let down the hair, relax and have fun, and so many wore smart, casual attires. The First Lady chose a lovely yellow number. While the bride chose a body-hugging gown, the groom wore blue tee-shirt and a pair of dark trousers. The strictly-by-invitation event which had Ebere Young Acharaike and Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi as comperes flowed smoothly. First to mount the stage was Sharp Band. The band's medley of love songs was so moving that the couple and their friends spent minutes on the dance floor. Next up was Iyanya, the Kukere Master, he was really energetic and worked up the First Lady to her feet where she grooved with the groom's mother and close friends. Dame Patience really enjoyed herself. The Bayelsa born Mamuze twins also mounted the stage and gave a good account of themselves. They stirred the audience for minutes and many responded in good measure. Iyanya was back for an encoreagain he did not disappoint. The whole venue was on its feet singing a-long and dancing to his popular tunes. The evening reached its crescendo when PSquare hit the stage. From their first song, to the last, it was obvious that they were the stars of the night. Dame Patience was in very ebullient mood, she needed little prompting before she hit the dance floor and even joined others in taking some of the choruses to the delight of

Le Président est sorti tout en souriant, tenant Faith par la main, et ensemble ils sont entrées dans l'église pendant que la chorale chantait l'hymne populaire "Mon espoir est construit ...". Le service a été officiée par le Révérend Nicholas Okoh, Le Arccbishop, Metropolitan et Primat de tout le Nigeria avec l'aide d’Obioma Onwuzurumba et d’Emmanuel Adekola. D'autres hommes de Dieu étaient également présents: Mgr David Oyedopo, le pasteur Paul Adefarasin et

Pasto Ayo Oritsejafor. C’était l’archevêque Okoh qui a fait les présentations et après l'hymne d'ouverture ‘’A Dieu soit la gloire", le service s'est déroulé sans problème. La célébration a commencé pour de bon avec une série de prières. Alors que la congrégation était sur ses pieds, l’archevêque Okoh a invité la mariée et le marié et a dit: «Cher peuple de Dieu, nous sommes venus ensemble en présence de Dieu, pour témoigner et pour célébrer le mariage entre Faith et Godswill, afin de demander Sa bénédiction en leur faveur et partager leur joie. Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ lui-même était un invité à un mariage à Cana en Galilée et a béni ce mode de vie. Et par Son esprit, Il est avec nous maintenant. L'Écriture nous enseigne que le mariage est un don de Dieu, un mystère saint dans lequel l'homme et la femme deviennent une seule chair. C'est le dessein de Dieu que lorsque le mari et la femme se donnent l’un à l’autre dans l'amour, tout au long de leur vie, qu’ils soient unis dans leur amour comme le Christ est uni à Son Église. Le mariage est institué pour que le mari et la femme puissent se réconforter et s‘entraider, tout en vivant fidèlement ensemble dans le manquement et dans l'abondance, dans la douleur et dans la joie. Il est également nécessaire qu’ils se connaissent dans la passion et dans la tendresse et qu’à travers leur union corporelle, qu’ils puissent consolider l’union de leur cœur et de leur vie. all. She was really in high spirits and joyous on account of her daughter, Faith and her husband, Godswill. The Bayelsa segment of the ceremony therefore ended with glee as people were cheering and screaming uninhibited like a real concert, till the wee hours of the morning.

SEALING THE UNION IN ABUJA

If the traditional ceremonies in Bayelsa could be described big, then the solemnization and reception in Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory can only be aptly termed very grand. The couple and their parents were swept by a tidal wave of affection as Nigerians and foreigners of all walks of life were there to share their momentous moment of joy. As early as 6.am inside Nigeria's Presidential Villa on what can be referred to as her happiest day yet on earth, Faith was up and ready to start preparations with the help of famous make-up artist, Banke Meshida-Lawal of BMpro. The bride had a complete set of attendants including a hair stylist. Ovation team that was there revealed that Faith and her maids had concluded a session of prayers a few minutes before, therefore, they were all upbeat that the day will be bright, beautiful and successful. Her bridal Train: Esther Jose & Ibimina Fiberesima (Maids of Honour), Kelechi Onwugharam, Endurance Paul, Enobong James, Faith Davies, Emomotimi Asayomo, Timilade Gita, Rita Odubo, Hannah Paulker, Ebika Abiri and Vivian Agadaga (Bride's maids), Arubai Jonathan and Azibadigiri Aaron

(Ballon Princesses) with Favour Omonibeke and Vanessa Edward (Little Princesses) were all being dressed up too. For her special day, the bride chose an ivory number that had a very elegant bodice. The bodice was enhanced with intricate jewel work and glittering stones. The veil was very soft silk tulle which gave a romantic effect to the dress-and the train was very long. In deed some believe it is the longest wedding train yet in the history of Nigeria! As for her shoes, she did not settle for less, she went for a Jimmy Choo. Meanwhile at a luxury hotel in town, the groom too was busy. For his special day, he chose a smart, black, single-breasted, one-button Tom Ford suit. His best man,Prince Hodo Osim Edward wore a similar outfit as also the other groom's men:Patrick Ekunke, Emmanuel Umunze, Nsikak Fyneface, Uwem Johnson, Henry Agwu, David Okon, Lawrence Etim, Idim Bassey, Ebiegberi Barigha, Ita Ita and Akeem Ibrahim. The Page Princes: Ariwera Jonathan, Gabriel Awi and Peter Awi were also well-decked in smart suits even little Prince, Fikayomi Oyewole was not left out. He turned out well. While the bride and groom were getting set, in another part of the Presidential Villa, the President and First Lady were also preparing, they were all keen to make the 10 a.m appointed time at the National Christian Centre, Central Business District, venue of the solemnization. The heart of Abuja City stood still that day as all roads leading to the Church and the reception were blocked and traffic diverted. Many curious

Il posa la question suivante: Voulez-vous l'aimer, le réconforter, l’honorer et le protéger, dans la maladie et dans la santé, dans la pauvreté et la prospérité en renonçant à tout autre, à lui être fidèle, aussi longtemps que vous vivrez tous les deux? La mariée répondit: je le ferai. Ses mots furent accueillis par un applaudissement retentissant de la congrégation qui a entamé l’hymne "Dieu Donne-nous un foyer chrétien". Ce n'est pas tout ; le Président s'avança lorsque le serviteur de Dieu posa sa prochaine question: Qui donne Faith en mariage à Godswill? Le Président répondit: c’est moi et il prit tendrement la main de sa fille et la remis au serviteur de Dieu. Ensuite, l'aspect final de la célébration a été scellé lorsqu’ils ont réaffirmé leurs vœux et ont échangé les anneaux. Ensuite,

l’homme de Dieu a déclaré: «Maintenant que Faith et Godswill ont donné leur consentement et ont formulé leurs vœux devant Dieu et devant cette assemblée, avec l’échange des anneaux, au Nom de Dieu, je les déclare mari et femme. Les acclamations étaient assourdissants lorsqu’il a joint leurs mains et a conclu en disant «Ce que Dieu a uni, que l'homme ne sépare. Amen ". Cette phase de la cérémonie a pris fin lorsque le serviteur de Dieu a exhorté les parents à bénir leurs enfants et de les soutenir de tout leur pouvoir pour s'assurer que leur mariage soit une réussite. Après avoir prié longuement pour Faith et Godswill, le dernier couple en ville, on invita le marie à lire quelques passages bibliques tirés de Genèse 2:15-24, tandis que la mariée a été plus tard invitée à lire Ephésiens 5:21-33. La congrégation était maintenant prête pour le sermon du jour qui devait être fait par le pasteur Enoch Adeboye, Surintendant général de l’Eglise Chrétienne Rachetée de Dieu. Dans son exhortation, il a eu des mots de conseils pour le couple, pour leurs parents et pour les célibataires dans la congrégation. Il a exhorté le couple à ne pas se critiquer, mais de toujours se compléter mutuellement. Contrairement aux autres fêtes, un cadeau a été placé sur chaque siège et nous pouvons dire avec confiance qu'il n'y avait pas de téléphones en or ou en platine partout dans la salle! Les spéculations sur le contenu des cadeaux étaient compréhensibles, l'entrée était très restreinte et seuls quelques privilégiés ont eu accès à la zone VIP. Mais comme d'habitude, Ovation eu un accès libre donc nous sommes dans la meilleure position pour raconter l’évènement dans tous ses détails. Avant leur arrivée à la réception, le marié avait remis un costume gris tandis que la mariée avait juste enlevé son long voile. Les deux tourtereaux

étaient très détendus. La réception à Abuja était très informel ; il y a eu peu de discours mais beaucoup de fun et les invites ont passé un après-midi très agréable. Une fois de plus, le charmant trio, Ebere Young, Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi et Moji Makanjuola étaient les animateurs et ils ont prié tout le monde de se lever pour chanter l’hymne national lorsque le Président et la Première Dame sont arrivés. Faith et Godswill ont fait leur entrée en dansant au rythme de la chanson ‘’Aye’’ de Davido. Tout le monde s'est mis à les applaudir pendant qu’ils s’avançaient vers la place réservée aux nouveaux mariés, place qui était époustouflante. L’aspect formel de la cérémonie a

Many guests had to park their vehicles miles away from the venue and shuttle buses were provided. Of course, the VIPs had a easier ride as they were dropped just by the gate and were just a few strolls away from the centre of action. Prominent among the early arrivals were former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedokun Gbadebo, Nollywood Star, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Senators Azu Agboti and Eyinaya Abaribe with their wives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu with wife and Chief Arthur Eze. It was not too long that the groom, Prince Godswill Osim Edward, arrived in two gleaming Hummer limousines and a convoy of other cars. He stopped at the entrance of the church to greet a few familiar faces before stepping out of the sunshine into the bowels of the church. The bride has the prerogative to be very late, but Faith did not take it. She was eager to become one with her Prince Charming. She rode in the Presidential motorcade which glided slowly to the church. The members of the bridal party rode in BMW cars!. Mr. President stepped out with a smile and locked hands with Faith and together they walked into the church as the popular hymn "My hope is built..." was being sang by the choir and the congregation in church was on its feet. The service was coordinated by The Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh, The Arccbishop, Metropolitan and Primate

While the congregation was still on its feet, Archbishop Okoh invited the bride and groom to the pulpit and said "Dear People of God, we have come together in the presence of God, to witness and celebrate the marriage of Faith and Godswill, to ask His blessing on them and to share their joy. "Our Lord Jesus Christ was himself a guest at a wedding in Cana of Galilee and blessed this way of life; and through his spirit he is with us now. The scripture teaches us that marriage is a gift from God, a holy mystery in which man and woman become one flesh. It is God's purpose that as husband and wife give themselves to each other in love throughout their lives, they shall be united in their love as Christ is united with His Church. "...Marriage is given primarily that husband and wife may comfort and help each other, living faithfully together in need and in plenty, in sorrow and joy. It is also given, that with delight and tenderness, they may know each other in love, and through the joy of their bodily union, may strengthen the union of their hearts and lives. Lastly, it is given that they may have children and be blessed in caring for them and bringing them up in accordance with God's will to His Praise and glory.

Par conséquent, tout ce que je vais ajouter, c'est que vous avez fait une promesse devant Dieu et devant nous tous que vous allez vous aimer les uns les autres et vivre ensemble jusqu'à ce que la mort vous sépare. The Minister then went on to administer to the couple their vows: He said to the Groom: Godswill, of your own free choice, will you take Faith to be your wife? He answered: I will. The Minster then continued: Will you love her, comfort her, honour and protect her, in sickness and in health, in poverty and prosperity and forsaking all others, be faithful to her, as long as you both will live? The groom answered: I will. Archbishop Okoh now turned to the bride: Faith, of your own free choice, will you take Godswill to be your husband? She answered: I will. he went on to the next question: Will you love him, comfort him, honour and protect him, in sickness and in health, in poverty and prosperity and forsaking all others, be faithful to him, as long as you both will live? The bride replied I will. As sson as this words left her lips, the congregation cheered, applauded and broke into the hymn, "God Give us a Christian Home" That was not all, the President soon stepped forward as the Minister fired his next question: Who gives Faith to be married to Godswill? Mr.President answered: I do and then lovingly taking Faith’s hands, handed her to the Minister. Then the final aspect of the solemnization was sealed as they reaffirmed their vows and exchanged rings. Then the Minister declared "Now that Faith and Godswill have given their consent and made their vows to each other before God and this congregation, with the joining of hands and giving and receiving of the ring, in the name of God, I declare that they are Husband and wife. The cheers were 252

Amen" This segment of the ceremony was concluded when the Minister admonished the parents to bless their children and support them with all their power to ensure that their marriage is a success. Faith and Godswill, the latest couple in town, where showered with prayers before the groom was invited to read the first lesson taken from the Gen. 2:15-24, while the bride later took her turn reading from Ephesians 5:2133. The congregation was now ready for the day's sermon that was to be delivered by respected Man of God and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. In his exhortation he had words of advice for the couple, their parents and the unmarried in the congregation. For the couple he urged them not to criticize but to always complement each other. He enjoined Godswill that as the Head of the Household, the success or failure of the marriage rests squarely on his shoulders and therefore he must do everything possible to make it work. He warned the mothers in-law not to interfere in the marriage and only assist the couple with prayers and good counsel. For those waiting for the Lord to savour the kind of joy the couple were feeling at the occasion, Pastor Adeboye advised them to avoid social media love affairs. "if you marry the modern way on facebook, you will divorce the modern way. Marry traditionally and involve God" Pastor Adeboye stated.

Les verres retentirent et le sourire était sur tous les lèvres des invités y compris ceux assis à la table d’honneur. L’heure de la coupure du gâteau arriva. C’était un magnifique gâteau de 13 niveaux. Encore une fois la coupure du gâteau a été de nouveau présidée par l'épouse du vice-président, Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo. Ensuite, les nouveaux mariés se sont donnés des morceaux du gâteau et il était évident que Faith a reçu une bonne éducation car elle s’est agenouillée pour mettre le morceau de gâteau dans la bouche de son mari. Cela a suscité des applaudissements de toutes les premières dames et des femmes mariées dans la salle. Ce qui peut être décrit comme le moment le plus émouvant de la mariée était quand il était temps pour la mariée de danser avec son père. Faith a avoué plus tard qu’elle avait retenu ses larmes lorsqu’elle dansait avec son père. Le président était très ému. Il était évident que le lien entre le père et sa fille était

très fort. Plus tard, la mariée et le marié ont pris la parole. Ils étaient dans leur propre monde rempli d'amour, dansant et se chuchotant des mots doux dans l’oreilles. C'était vraiment sublime. His sermon was then followed by a session of praises and choruses as the couple and their families signed the marriage register and were presented with their certificate. John Opara spent some time recognising some of the dignitaries in the church before the couple, their families and the entire congregation were engulfed in a thanksgiving session that was soul-stirring and spirit-lifting Faith and Godswill left the National Christian Centre to the refrain of the hymn "Through the love of God our saviour". They stepped into the bright sunshine with joy and smiles before hopping into a special horse-drawn carriage with the official presidential seal on their way to the International Conference Centre (ICC), venue of the reception.

The ICC was creatively transformed by Rita Idehen's Blu Victoria and her team to an heavenly arena. The dĂŠcor was complete with giant crystal chandeliers, twinkling lights, assorted fresh flowers and seats fit for royal. The decor presented another awe-inspiring ambience. Unlike other parties, a gift pack was placed on each seat and we can confidently reveal to you that there were no gold or platinum phones anywhere in the hall! Speculations about the calibre of gifts was understandable, entry into the event was very restricted and only a select few had access to the VVIP area. the groom had changed into a grey suit while the bride had given up her long train, thus, they were in a more relaxed mood. By the time their wedding cortege got to the venue, they were met by a guard of honour mounted by men and ladies in smart suits and high boots. It was in synch with the equestrian theme. The reception in Abuja was very informal, speeches where very few but entertainment was high on the agendaand guests had an afternoon full of fun. Once again, the charming triumvirate, Ebere Young Acharike, Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi and Moji

Makanjuola were comperes and they instructed all on to rise for the national anthem as soon as Mr. President and the First Lady arrived. Faith and Godswill with their entourage, danced into the hall with a medley of popular Nigerian songs blaring from the PA system, the song that really stole their hearts at least from the energy of their dance steps was Davido's Aye. Everyone was cheering and urging them on as they made their way to the sitting area-which was another spectacular sight to behold. Today is your day and we are all here as witnesses as we were witnesses in the church earlier on. "As Chairman, I am supposed to be giving you some word of advice. But after hearing the sermon that was given today at the church, there is no need at all. Therefore I will be brief. May I say thank you on behalf of Faith and Godswill. Thank you very much indeed for your appearance. Thanks to the parents for organising this wedding and reception; and I am sure all of us are grateful to Mr. President and Dame Patience and to the parents of the groom, His Majesty and Her Majesty, the Edwards. May I say we are all very grateful to you for attending this

excellent wedding and reception. "Thank you on behalf of the bride and groom. Like I said earlier, I am not going to give advice to the couple more than what they have heard from the sermon this morning. I am also sure they have received a lot of advice from their marriage counselors and from their elders, wherever they are. Therefore, all I am going to add is that you have made a promise before God and all of us that you are going to love each other and live together till death do you part. Marriage is a give and take between the wife and husband and therefore, you must realize that you may have problems in the course of your life as married people but never allow the day to pass without you resolving your problems through prayer 293

and by being dedicated to each other in true love. "Make sure that you live together happily in true love of one another and make sure that you make your married life a success through prayers. Look at the examples of your parents â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they have been married for many years. Now, that is what you should aim at â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to be able to live together happily for as long as you live and to ensure that you bring up your children in the way that they brought you up. "Aim at ensuring that your married life continues until death do you part and I hope that it will be as long, even longer than those of your parents. I want all married people here to

join me in saying welcome to the club. It is the wish of the young couple that you enjoy yourself and that is why we are all here. On behalf of the couple, I say, enjoy yourselves and make the evening a memorable one" With these words, it was entertainment galore from the Calabar Cultural Troupe to Iyanya, and then to D'Banj, guests were given the time of their lives. Guests also dined on a sumptuous wedding feast. There were also options on the dessert menu with assorted cakes and fruits. All was washed down with fine wines and vintage champagnes. wedding nothing was over the top in terms of victuals there seem to be conscious effort to be moderate and understated. The toast was by Hodo Osim Edward the groom's brother. Describing the couple as unique personalities, he stated "I have known Godswill and Faith for a number of years now. In this number of years, I have known them to be very lovely people, very humble people, very charitable people and above all, they love God and that’s why God has shown himself strong and mighty in their lives. "I want to tell you today, that as family and friends, we will always pray for you. Don’t leave God- keep on praying to God. This toast is to long life, prosperity, fruitfulness, astronomical breakthrough, unmerited favour, increase on every side and most of all, God’s protection”. Glasses clicked and smiles of satisfaction broke out all round the venue including the top table. The reception gathered momentum as the couple prepared to cut their intimidating 13-tier cake creatively crafted by cake artist, Mrs. Efua Olumide of Exotique Cake. This was indeed a fairytale cake which was fitting for their fairytale wedding. Again the cake –cutting ceremony was supervised by the wife of the VicePresident, Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo. Afterwards, the couple fed each other with pieces of the cake-and it was obvious that Faith had solid home training as she knelt down to feed her husband, This humble gesture elicited applause from all the first ladies and married women in the house. What can be described as the most

moving moment for the bride was when it was time to dance with her father. Faith later confessed that she had to force back tears as she held on to her dad for this very special dance. The President too was emotional. It was obvious that their age-long fatherdaughter bond was very strong. Many told OVATION that they were impressed by the way Mr. President showered love on Faith. They said this was evidence that he was very humane and has a good heart. Later, the bride and the bridegroom took to the floor. They were in their own love-filled world, dancing and cooing into each other's ears. This was real unconditional love on display. Another exciting moment was the throwing of the bouquet and the segment was handled by Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi. The bride was teasing her friends, and pointing to her ring and seemed to be telling them, come join me as she heaved the bouquet backwards. Then the microphone was handed over to Mr. President who said he only wanted to say a few words. Your Excellency, the Vice President and his wife; the wife of the Senate President; the Speaker, House of Representatives, thank you for being here with us. The Chairman of this occasion, our former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon and his wife, thank you; we thank other Heads of State that are here with us and the wife of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar" That was how he began. “He continued: The Chairman of our great party, we thank you for being here with us. We thank members of the National Assembly, members of the Federal Executives Council, Nigerian Governors, Deputy Governors, captains

C'est ce que j'appelle la tristesse glorieuse car c’est l'un des moments les plus tristes de la mère mais c’est une joie car la joie de tout parent c’est de voir sa fille se marier. C'est un moment de bonheur. C'est comme ça que je me sens maintenant. Je conseille toujours aux gens qui se marient que le jour de leur mariage est un jour glorieux. On sourit, on danse, mais sachez que des moments viendront où vous ne serez pas très contents. J’espère que vous allez vous comprendre et que vous allez prier pour que vous viviez une vie très heureuse. "Nous continuons de prier pour vous. Notre devoir en tant que parents est de continuer à prier pour vous, pour vous encourager, et s’il y a des petits problèmes que nous pensons que nous pouvons résoudre, on peut vous aider à les résoudre. Ne comptez pas toujours sur vos parents pour résoudre vos problèmes matrimoniaux. Si vous êtes en désaccord avec votre mari, vous

devez régler cela à deux. N’allez pas toujours vers les parents pour demander conseil. Parfois, ils ne seront pas vous donner le meilleur des conseils parce que vos parents sont des gens analogiques. Vous êtes une génération dans un monde numérique (rire général). Donc, nous n'appartenons pas à la même génération, de sorte que vous ne devez pas toujours compter sur nous pour vous donner le genre de conseils qui s'adapte à votre façon moderne de penser, mais nous vous encourageons à réussir. Je vous dis félicitations au Nom de Jesus>>. Cette cérémonie exaltante a pris fin avec le discours du marié qui était très reconnaissant envers tous ceux qui les ont encouragés et épaulés pendant toutes ces années. I won’t want to use the protocol list because it’s very long but we appreciate all dignitaries here present. " I’m not here to make a speech but to appreciate all of you who are here, those who have left and those who are watching this programme from home, on behalf of my wife and the entire Jonathan family and the Edward family. We thank all of you for the interest and love you have shown to us and for the encouragement you have given to our son and daughter on their coming together which has now been finally solemnized.

"For fathers, and I believe for mothers too, the last day when your daughter leaves the house is always difficult. After today, we probably would be seeing her again after some months. She will tell her husband, “Let me go and see my old man.” " It’s not an easy thing, a young lady who has stayed with you throughout her life, then one day a man comes and takes her away. I call it glorious sadness because it is one of the parent's saddest moment but a glorious one at the same time. You’re happy because the joy of any parent is to witness the day your daughter or son gets marred. It’s a very happy moment; at the same time, it’s a very sad moment. That is the way I am feeling right now.

"I always advise people who are getting married that today is a very glorious day-we’re smiling, we’re dancing; but also know that there will also be moments were you will not be too happy. Well, that’s a part of life, a part of marriage. There’s no couple that would not have some moments when their faces would not become cloudy. It depends on how you make out time to understand each other. I believe you will understand yourselves and pray that you will live a very happy life. "We will continue to pray for you. Our duty as parents is to continue to pray for you, to encourage you, and if there are little problems that we think we can solve, to help you resolve them. Don’t rely on your parents to solve your matrimonial problems. If you have a disagreement with your husband, both of you have to resolve that disagreement. Don’t always go to parents to seek advice from your mothers and fathers. Sometimes, they will not give you the best advice because your parents are analogue people. You are a digital generation (general laughter). "So we don’t belong to the same generation, so you don’t expect us to give you the kind of advice that will 300

fit into the modern way of thinking but we will encourage you to succeed. I wish you well in Jesus Name and once again, Congratulations." The exhilarating occasion came to an end with the speech of the groom who was full of thanks for all those who had supported them all through the years. It was a fitting finale to a glorious celebration of love as top Nigerian artistes were there to entertain the select audience which included Mr. President, the First Lady, the Vice President and wife, some Governors and their wives with captains of industry. The evening was planned for undiluted entertainment and to ensure that there was no dull moment-and the organizers hit the mark big time. Sean Tizzle, D'Banj and Iyanya had a very good outing but the evening's outstanding star was Davido.

It was fun all the way as guests such as Mrs. Obioma Imoke, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and Obongawan Fifi Ejindu joined Iyanya on stage to exhibit their skills of the Etigi and Ekombi dance steps. They all got a resounding applause. Sean Tizzle gave a good account of himself and got greet cheers when he sang his hit tune "Ole". Psquare and D'banj got the First Lady rocking but it was when Davido came on stage that the whole sit-down audience was on its feet-and they danced heartily. His current hit "aye" was repeated many times over and sang by both the young and old. Many were soaked in the fun and did not know it was well into the early hours before the revellers began to feel the lure of their beds. In all, it was a wonderful end to a truly memorable occasion, one that will not be forgotten for years to come.

C'était une finale haute de gamme pour célébrer l’amour et il y a avait des artistes nigérians de grande renommée pour divertir les personnes présentes qui comprenaient le Président, la Première Dame, le viceprésident et son épouse, certains gouverneurs et leurs épouses avec des capitaines de l'industrie. Dans son allocution d'ouverture, le président de l'occasion, le vice-président Namadi Sambo a remercié tous ceux qui ont soutenu le Président et la Première Dame, de Yenogoa à Abuja. C'est avec grand plaisir et humilité que je vous souhaite les bienvenus à cette soirée. Une fois cette allocution faite, il était temps de passer aux choses essentielles. La soirée a été prévue pour être grandiose, et les organisateurs ont fait un bon boulot. Sean Tizzle, D'Banj et Iyanya ont fait bonne prestation mais la star de la soirée était Davido. Tout le monde s’est bien amusé et Mme Obioma Imoke, le sénateur Florence ItaGiwa et Obongawan, Fifi Ejindu ont rejoint Iyanya sur scène pour danser l’etigi et le ekombi. Elles ont été très applaudies. Sean Tizzle a été très applaudi pour sa chanson ‘’Ole". Psquare et D'banj ont fait danser la Première Dame mais tout le monde s’est levé quand Davido est monté sur scène. Son tube actuel ‘’Aye’’ a été joué à plusieurs reprises et il a été repris par les jeunes et les vieux. Les gens se sont beaucoup amusés et ce n’est que tard dans la nuit que les invites ont retrouvé leurs lits. Dans l'ensemble, ce fut une belle façon de terminer un évènement inoubliable, un évènement que plusieurs ne sont pas près d’oublier dans les années à venir. 340
