Heat Safety
BY YESENIA VÉLEZ, LCAM COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGER
Heat Illnesses Can be Fatal; Would You Know What to Do? Did you know your body is constantly in a struggle to disperse the heat it produces? Most of the time, you’re hardly aware of it – unless your body is exposed to more heat than it can handle. In 2017, 87 people died in the U.S. from exposure to excessive heat, according to injury facts (visit https://injuryfacts.nsc.org/ home-and-community/safety-topics/weather-related-deathsand-injuries/ for more details), the annual statistical report on unintentional injuries produced by the National Safety Council. Heat-related illnesses can escalate rapidly, leading to delirium, organ damage and even death. There are several heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke (the most severe), heat exhaustion and heat cramps. Those most at risk include: • • • • • • • •
2
Infants and young children Elderly people Pets Individuals with heart or circulatory problems or other longterm illness People who work outdoors Athletes and people who like to exercise – especially beginners Individuals taking medications that alter sweat production Alcoholics and drug abusers
BELLALAGO BEACON | MAY/JUNE 2019
Heat Stroke Seek medical help immediately if someone is suffering from heat stroke. Signs and symptoms include flushed skin that is very hot to the touch; rapid breathing; headache, dizziness, confusion or irrational behavior; and convulsions or unresponsiveness. The victim also will likely have stopped sweating. Do not hesitate to take action: • • • •
Call 911 immediately Move the victim to a cool place Remove outer clothing Immediately cool the victim with any means at hand, preferably by immersing up to the neck in cold water (with the help of a second rescuer) • If immersion in cold water is not possible, place the victim in a cold shower or move to a cool area and cover as much of the body as possible with cold, wet towels • Do not try to force the victim to drink liquids • Monitor the victim’s breathing and be ready to give CPR if needed
Heat Exhaustion When the body loses an excessive amount of salt and water, heat exhaustion can set in. People who work outdoors and athletes are particularly susceptible. Symptoms are similar to those of the flu and can include severe thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting and, sometimes, diarrhea. Other symptoms include profuse sweating, clammy or pale skin, dizziness, rapid pulse and normal

or slightly elevated body temperature. Uncontrolled heat exhaustion can evolve into heatstroke, so make sure to treat the victim quickly. • Move them to a shaded or air-conditioned area • Give them water or other cool, nonalcoholic beverages • Apply wet towels or having them take a cool shower
Heat Cramps Heat cramps are muscle spasms that usually affect the legs or abdominal muscles, often after physical activity. Excessive sweating reduces salt levels in the body, which can result in heat cramps.
Cleaning Your Roof
Workers or athletes with pain or spasms in the abdomen, arms or legs should not return to work for a few hours. Instead: • • • •
Sit or lie down in the shade Drink cool water or a sports drink Stretch affected muscles Seek medical attention if you have heart problems or if the cramps don’t get better in an hour
How to Avoid It The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers more information on heat-related illness. The best way to avoid a heat-related illness is to limit exposure outdoors during hot days. Air conditioning is the best way to cool off, according to the CDC. Also do the following: • Drink more liquid than you think you need and avoid alcohol • Wear loose, lightweight clothing and a hat • Replace salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks • Avoid spending time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. • Wear sunscreen; sunburn affects the body’s ability to cool itself • Pace yourself when you run or otherwise exert your body

pring time is here and with that our spring cleaning season has started! I figured there is no better time to share a quick tip to help maintain your roof for the long term. Most people think when their roof is dirty, the only thing to do is get someone up there to pressure wash the dirt off but that’s not the best way to keep your roof cleaned. Soft-washing the roof is a much more efficient way to keep your roof clean for more than a year. Pressure washing your roof not only could damage your tiles if done improperly, but it’s also not an effective way to remove the mold, mildew, and algae that has formed on your roof. After pressure washing many people see their roof go right back to how it was within a year. Soft-washing uses a very strong cleaning solution that does most of the work rather than just spraying your roof down. Think about almost any other item you wash, do you just use water, or do you use soap and water? The solution used in soft-washing is able to penetrate all the way down to the root of the problem. This is much more efficient at preventing the mold, mildew, and algae from coming back so quickly.

reetings! What a busy year this has been! We want to welcome all the new homeowners and tenants that have joined our beautiful community. We continue growing in number and we want to ensure everyone has the correct information in regards to registering for DwellingLive and obtaining ID’s. For homeowners, we require a copy of the warranty deed along with a copy of ID’s and vehicle registration. The next step would be to schedule an orientation at Bellalago where you will be informed of the Amenity Center rules and given an ID that would need to be presented at each Amenity Center visit. Tenants, after you are approved by the HOA, you will have to schedule an orientation to receive your ID and information about our Amenity Centers. Summer Lawn & Landscape Care BY JOSE CHAPARRO, ASSISTANT COMMUNITY MANAGER
S
ummer brings outdoor barbecues and backyard play for children of all ages. As many people spend more time outdoors during the summer months than any other time, follow these tips for a healthy, entertainment- worthy yard.
• Mow Correctly. Many homeowners are tempted to mow their grass short to minimize the frequency of mowing; however, proper mowing techniques will help promote the good health of your lawn.
• Water Correctly. Many people think the summer months mean water frequently, but the way you water is more important that the frequency with which you water. Grass and plants are resilient and have mechanisms that help them deal with summer heat. For instance, grass may go dormant and look brown during times of drought, but, if it is well cared for, it may return to normal when there is adequate moisture. Efficient tip for watering deeply.
Note: You can help your yard win the battle with drought by choosing the right plants to begin with. Plants that are native to your region will be best adapted to your weather conditions and will need less water. Even if you choose natives, be sure those natives are listed as drought tolerant since even some natives prefer wetter conditions. You can also choose drought-resistant or low water plants and turf varieties. Ask your landscape professional for advice when selecting new plants.
• Water your plants less often, but deeply.
As a reminder, any changes to the exterior of your properties (including landscape) require ARC approvals. For any questions regarding the Architectural Review Process, or application, you can contact Keegan at KMathur@Evergreen-LM.com. For any compliance information or complaints, you can contact the Bellalago Compliance Team at BellalagoCompliance@ Evergreen-LM.com.
• Water in the early morning or evening hours so the sun and heat don’t steal moisture from you plants. Ideally, grass should get at least one inch of water per week. • Ensure the health of your grass. • Have your lawn aerated to improve oxygen flow and check the soil PH balance to ensure the healthiest grass. • It’s important that your grass has adequate fertilizer, which provides the nutrients necessary for good health. • Remove weeds from grass as they steal nutrients. 6

The Spring Event was a Success! BY AMY MALLINDER, LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR OF CENTRAL FLORIDA PHOTOS BY KATELYNN CARLSON PHOTOGRAPHY.
J
ust like that our biggest event of the year has blown by. This year we tried a whole new layout for our Spring Eggstravaganza and Health Fair to be more efficient and less crowded then previous years. I’m confident in saying we definitely achieved that. Our day began at 6am, prepping all of the rides, tents, carnival games and organizing all of the wonderful prizes that were up for grabs, as well as setting out the new egg grab location. With approximately 1,400 residents in attendance enjoying the delicious food trucks, 10,000 candy-filled eggs separated out over five age groups with five golden eggs. There were seven carnival games, including Smash n Dash, Fish Bowls, Bean Bag Toss, Bucket Toss, Ring Toss, and our newest additions, Slide Drop and Tin Can Alley, as well as our Bellalago Fishing Club working hard at our Deep Sea Fishing game. Huge thank you to the Fishing Club volunteers who spent the day with us setting up and showing the families a good time. In addition to Bellalago staff and a few resident volunteers, this event would not have been the event it was without the Rotary Youth Exchange program. This program is where a student from 8

overseas is sponsored by a local Rotary Club to come to the United States for one year to attend high school, learn a new language and immerse themselves into our culture. We were fortunate to meet such wonderful exchange students from Thailand, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Finland, France and Italy. Over the past few months these students have spent countless hours assisting me with volunteering at their community events. It has been a pleasure to get to know these kids, and to see the bond they have formed with each other. This event takes a lot of time to plan and execute, so we would appreciate your feedback at Evergreen-LM.com/good-deeds. We have a lot of fun and exciting things coming this summer, including Cinco De Mayo Kids Taco Party, Mother’s Day Brunch, Science Madness, Candyland Daddy Daughter Dance, Pool Parties, Inflatable Game Night, Dive in Movies, and more!

Gated Community Overview BY VITAL SECURITY & INVESTIGATIONS
W
hen the community is gated, our security teams handle every security procedure at the entry gate. We do not simply open the gate and let people in the community. Our security officers check the residential decals on all the cars of people who live in the neighborhood. Our security staff also makes an effort to get to know everyone so we have a personal relationship with people who live in the community. This connection helps us provide better security and makes everyone feel safer as well.
can. However, we are not law enforcement officers and in the event there is an actual crime occurring, we serve as a liaison with the local law enforcement and serve in a supportive role allowing them to do their job effectively. We also coordinate with local authorities to give them information to help them get to the right house in a fair amount of time. We work with the local authorities whenever there is an emergency and always keep a lane open for emergency vehicles to get in and out of the community quickly.
When visitors arrive at the entry gate, we check the visitor’s log database where homeowners in the community add names of their visitors and guests. When people are not on the list, we contact the resident the visitor is going to see before they are let into the community. We are extremely professional and cordial, but we take every precaution to make sure that the neighborhood is safe. This means that we do not let in anyone who is not supposed to be there.
Vital Security is committed to enhancing the service delivery in your community. We are currently constructing an ambassador program for kids in the community to teach them about safety and security. We are looking to be more intentional about educating the homeowners in the community so that they are being as safe as possible.
Residential Guard Patrols Our patrol officers drive around and walk the streets of the community to ensure that everyone is safe and secure. We keep our eyes open for suspicious behavior, but we also make sure that children are not playing in the street and cars are not broken down or parked incorrectly. When we check that cars are parked in the correct places, we are ensuring that the streets are safe to drive on, but we are also ensuring that all of our residents are safe. We check on any home where something seems to be awry, as well as check on homeowners who have their garages or front doors open. We simply want to make sure that every resident is safe and feels safe.
Neighborhood Emergencies When there are emergencies in the neighborhood, we provide information to the authorities who are sending help. We will run to a home that has an ambulance coming and we also check homes where a fire has broken out. We are committed to the safety of all of the people in the community and we do not wait for the authorities to arrive; we jump into action as soon as we possibly 12
BELLALAGO BEACON | MAY/JUNE 2019
Moving Forward
We use the most appropriate vehicles to get around the neighborhood. Whether in a vehicle or golf cart or on a bike, we always have officers positioned in places where they can easily get to anyone in the community to keep them safe, no matter the situation. Mobile patrol will also be looking to implement Radar patrols to identify any vehicles that are speeding throughout the community. Patrol will not be issuing citations, but instead will be holding up a friendly residential “Please Slow Down” sign for any violators. With help from Vital Security & Investigations, every neighborhood has the chance to have to be locked down tight to ensure that everyone’s safety, which is of the utmost importance. The efforts that we make have a direct impact on you being able to live comfortably in your homes. The best part of working with Vital Security & Investigations is that we handle all of the security concerns so the community does not have to lift a finger. From emergency response to education, we make it easy for residents to live safely in their homes. Every day we are committed to offering what you deserve “World Class Customer Service!” Thank you for giving us this opportunity to serve you and your family!

What’s Up Dock? BY CHRIS HEELEY, RESIDENT, FISHING CLUB
T
here are several advantages to living on Lake Bellalago. One of those advantages is the opportunity to construct a dock to provide access to your boat, or just to get you closer to the great fishing the lake offers. With the weather warming, we all want to get outside and enjoy nature. But docks are a lot like any other item we own, they require periodic inspection and maintenance. Sometimes what looks good on the surface may not be good down below. The dock materials used near or in the water are subjected to different deterioration factors than the decking material. It is important to ensure that your dock doesn’t present a hazard liability to anyone venturing out on it. Docks in Bellalago have been constructed using pressure treated pine for the posts and stringers. While this material is superior to non-treated pine, it too has a finite life. The lifespan of a dock is between 10 and 15 years depending on the size of the wood used during the construction. Traveling around Lake Bellalago, you will see different dock construction methods. Some of the earlier docks were constructed using 4” x 4” posts while newer docks typically are constructed using 4” x 6” or 6” x 6” posts. That may not seem like much of a difference, but it can make a big difference in the longevity of the dock. If you are considering a new dock you should specify 6” x 6” post at a minimum to extend the life of the dock. The level of pressure treatment in the wood is also a factor in how long a dock will last. Freshwater docks should have a minimum of 0.60 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) pressure treatment. This number specifies how much pressure is used to drive the wood preservative chemicals into the wood. The higher the pressure the longer the life of the dock. Docks that were built in Bellalago in the early 2000’s should be inspected every year for safety and soundness. It is likely that a 14
BELLALAGO BEACON | MAY/JUNE 2019
dock that has not had renovation, has some decay and rot that is not necessarily visible to someone standing on the dock. Dock builders can provide dock inspections and estimates to repair or replace the dock. Docks built in the past 10 years should be inspected at least every three to five years to ensure that rot or loose boards have not degraded the structural integrity of the dock. If you are purchasing a home that already has a dock, include a dock inspection as part of the home inspection process so that you know whether there are hidden problems. While examining your dock, also look at your path to get down to your dock. If you have pavers leading to the dock, make sure they don’t present a hazard for tripping or problems for the mowers of the common ground. Dock lighting is another important consideration for dock owners. Boaters and fisherman leaving or returning in low light conditions may have a difficult time seeing a dock that is not lit. Solar lights, while inexpensive and easy to install, are not always dependable. So, dock owner should install permanent lighting at the end of their docks. Just remember to hire a licensed electrician to make sure your wiring is up to code standards, and include GFI circuits on any dock electricity to prevent electrical shock. Let’s face it, we have lots of birds and waterfowl that like to perch on our docks. So, a source of freshwater is also an important consideration for keeping your boat and dock clean. Dock placement on lots has been predetermined by the developer. Bellalago residents are required to submit plans for docks to the Architectural Review Committee during the dock planning phase and prior to construction. Residents are also required to maintain their docks as they would their homes and landscape, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for the safety of themselves, family and friends.
