Community Reminders BY YESENIA VÉLEZ, LCAM COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGER
Curb Appeal Matters Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to tackle all those exterior projects around the house and property. May is Mailbox Improvement Month, so check your mailbox first. Is the color faded? Does your post have rot and/or chipped paint? With HOA inspections looming, get that taken care of before violation notices are sent. Should the driveway be repaired or sealed? Inspect your lawn for weeds and keep it properly mowed. Weed and trim foundation beds. Examine your house and garage doors for fading and chipped paint. Check your roof for mold and mildew. Is the house or fence moldy or just in need of a good power washing? In today’s resale market, curb appeal matters!
Let the Summer Fun Begin With the pool season here once again, please take a few minutes to read over the pool rules posted in the Clubhouse, at the pool, 2

Facilities Update
BY JOSE CHAPARRO, LCAM, CMCA, FACILITIES DIRECTOR

elcome to the neighborhood to all the new residents in Bellalago! We’d like to remind everyone to make sure you are registered to receive the community eblasts, as this is our main form of communication to all residents. Unfortunately, with the Coronavirus, most businesses are closed and only those that are deemed necessary remain open (as per county/state orders). As you may already know, the amenities and all events and activities have been halted until further notice. Maintenance and a few other departments remain open because they are deemed necessary. Due to the mandatory closures, we took the opportunity to power wash and clean all of the buildings, all exterior furniture, all of the exterior pavers/areas (in the pool area), and we painted everything that needed it. Additionally, we heat treated/steamed all interior floors, walls and furniture to make sure everything was sanitized and clean. We also did some interior painting and changed out all of the lights. We also took advantage of this time to repaint the parking lines on the exterior of the Amenity Centers and continue to work on the upkeep of Bellalago. Despite these unpredictable and unfortunate times of uncertainty, we at Bellalago and Evergreen continue to be optimistic and will also continue to do as much as we can based on what is allowed, per the current guidelines. We wish for a

Bellalago’s Aquatic Vegetation Friend or Foe? BY CHRIS HEELEY, RESIDENT, BELLALAGO FISHING CLUB
W
hen is an aquatic plant a weed? There is no scientific definition for the term “weed,” but just like in our own lawns, we define a weed as a plant growing in the wrong place. An aquatic plant is commonly called a weed when its growth interferes with people’s use of a lake for activities, such as boating or fishing. Plants considered to be a nuisance by some people may, in fact, be natural and beneficial to our lake.
those occurring naturally in our environment or those that have thrived in our region for many years. In Bellalago, desirable native plants typically grow on the water’s surface or shoreline, provide the benefits outlined above and do not spread at a rapid rate. Many of Bellalago’s native plants were placed around the lake and ponds when it was first created. Two of the desirable plants are arrowheads and lily pads. While lily pads can be considered an
Aquatic plant management is the practice of balancing the natural benefits of the presence of plants and the desire of lake users to have a visually appealing and enjoyable recreational experience. So, plants are a necessary and important element of a healthy lake or pond. The lake and ponds around Bellalago are not unlike other Florida water bodies. Our temperate climate keeps water temperatures from freezing, allowing aquatic vegetation to survive year-round. Aquatic plants are important because they filter the water, provide fish and wildlife food and habitat, and help to prevent erosion.
Native Plants There are two classifications of aquatic plants in Bellalago’s ponds and lake: natives and invasive species. Native plants are 12

Lily Pads

invasive species, they are easily managed and provide excellent fish and wildlife habitat.
Invasive Plants Invasive aquatic plants also provide some of the benefits outlined above, but are typically difficult to contain and control because they tend to spread rapidly and can eventually choke a lake or pond, rendering it unusable. Bellalago’s invasive plants likely originated from other lakes, such as Lake Toho, when boaters returned to Lake Bellalago. That is why washing boats before returning is a very important step in controlling invasive plants. Invasive plants spread through either rhizomes that grow under the soil on the lake bottom or through the plants surface reproduction. Some examples of particularly troublesome invasive plants in Florida are hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce.
Controlling Invasive Plants Controlling invasive plants has traditionally been done using chemicals developed specifically for lakes and ponds. Bellalago utilizes a lake maintenance service to keep the invasive plants in check. They treat our lake and ponds from boat and from an all-terrain vehicle. Unfortunately, chemicals can spread out and damage desirable plants. Also, the long-term effect on fish, birds and other wildlife is not known. That is one reason for the “Catch and Release” policy in Bellalago when fishing. We would not want a resident consuming fish that has ingested chemicals. In 2018, a large amount of chemicals was used on the lake after a terrible hydrilla infestation that nearly prevented boat traffic on the lake. While the chemicals knocked the hydrilla back, they also killed many of our desirable plants. As a result, the HOA began looking into alternatives to spraying chemicals to at least partially control hydrilla. One such solution utilized in other waterbodies was the addition of a particular species of grass carp whose diet consists exclusively of hydrilla. These carp are unique in the fact that while at the hatchery, the eggs of this particular grass carp are treated so that the adult grass carp cannot reproduce. The Bellalago HOA petitioned the Florida Wildlife Commission and received approval to place the carp in our lake. In late 2018 the grass carp were introduced to the lake. At the time they were roughly 10” and approximately one pound each. Today, you may see them near the shoreline. Most of the carp are now about 24” and between 3 and 5 pounds. They will grow to approximately 30” at full maturity. Since their introduction we have not needed to chemically treat hydrilla in our lake. Chemicals are still used to control the hyacinth and other invasive plants, but the amount of spraying has decreased significantly.
Hydrilla
What Can We Do?
Water Hyacinth
Water Lettuce
There are other shoreline grasses that, if left unattended, can also cause long-term problems. Hydrilla spreads through its rhizomes and is difficult to kill. The best one can hope for is to kill back the plant above the lake’s soil. Eventually, the hydrilla will grow back. Water hyacinth and water lettuce are particularly difficult because they float on the surface and move with the wind. Once water hyacinth and water lettuce are blown up against the shoreline they will attach to the shore and continue to spread. Both plants will also blow adjacent to other desirable plants making them difficult to kill with spray without jeopardizing the desirable natives.
Are these aquatic plants “Friends or Foe”? As you now know, they can be either depending on whether they are native or invasive plants. So, what can we as residents do to help control the invasive aquatic plants? First and foremost, as mentioned above, we need to rinse our boats and jet skis when returning from any public water body. You may not even see any plants on your boat or motor, but just a few plant cells are all that’s necessary to spread the invasive plants. Also, don’t over fertilize your lawns. The run-off from watering causes the invasive plants to grow at an even faster rate and can cause an algae bloom, much like that experienced over the past few years on the Florida coast. The HOA is examining the possibility of adding back some of the native plants that have disappeared in recent years in order to maintain our beautiful lake and ponds and ensure the future of our fish and wildlife.
