Letter From the Lifestyle Team CHRISTINE FOSTER YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER
Happy New Year! First and foremost, I’d like to wish everyone the best year yet, filled with tons of happiness, good health, and lots of new friends at Esplanade! I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. We are so excited to welcome back our seasonal Members just in time for all the fun we have in store these next couple of months. Our annual holiday toy drive was a huge success! Despite our small community, we were still able to collect substantial toy donations to make a difference. Over 30 toys and warm pajamas were delivered to Avalon Elementary School, where 95% of the students come from low-income families. They are always so appreciative of the generosity displayed by our Esplanade communities. I can hardly wait to see how much we gather this year. Let’s set our goal to 50 items! I also want to thank everybody who attended our first Signature Event! I hope you all had an enjoyable time and were able to take advantage of the opportunity to meet some of your neighbors! A new year means new goals and we are here to help with that. Throughout this publication, you will find a variety of self-care tips, whether it’s skincare recipes, group fitness opportunities, creative art classes, or social gatherings! Together, we will stay on track to be the best versions of ourselves this year. We deserve it! The success of our Lifestyle programming heavily relies on your participation, so special thanks to everyone who has supported our efforts since the very beginning to make sure we effectively provide a lifestyle for everyone to enjoy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions you may have.

Furry Friends MEET
Shibi – LOVED BY THE MIU FAMILY
What is your breed, age and birthday? I’m a Shiba Inu, an ancient breed. We are mischievous, catlike and we shed a lot. Most of us don’t bark, but I’m the exception to the rule. What is your favorite pastime? Getting my beauty sleep and eating my mom’s home-cooked meals. What do you get reprimanded for and what are your best characteristics? I get reprimanded most for being the diva I am! My best characteristics are my everlasting beauty and my amazing voice when I yell at people!
Instagram: @Shibi_the_pupstar
Tell us about the time your humans welcomed you to their loving home. When I was just three months old, I met my mom at the Tokyo airport. After making sure I was healthy and strong, I endured a 17-hour flight to San Francisco! I met my 15-year-old Shiba brother but unfortunately, he crossed the rainbow bridge shortly thereafter. From a blueberry farm to a bustling city, I was ready to start my journey! And now after traveling across country, I’m ready for new adventures in Naples!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Joe Casey & Rochelle Ducharme The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Q A
Why did you choose Naples/Esplanade by the Islands? Is your residency full-time or part-time? If part-time, where else do you spend your time? We have been coming to Naples seasonally for the past 6 years and decided we wanted to retire here full-time from Jamestown, RI. We were looking for a community that would offer the amenities and social activities that Esplanade by the Islands will eventually provide. What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Also, tell us your hobbies. Golf, Culinary Center, Book Club, Mahjong, Bocce, Pickleball, Tennis, and Wellness activities. We both enjoy golfing, traveling, reading, bicycling, swimming, fishing, and exploring southwest Florida’s natural environment and resources. Tell us about your family and current or past professions. We have no children but both come from large families (13 siblings, 16 nieces and 11 nephews) who can’t wait to visit. We’re both retired. Joe was a Senior Environmental Scientist and worked for the State of Rhode Island. Rochelle retired as a Nursing Professor.
What is the best advice you have ever received or given? Rochelle’s parents instilled in their children, “to live simply so that others may simply live.” Where is the most exciting place you've traveled to and what made it so memorable? Germany, specifically Bavaria. Rochelle had lived in Germany several years ago and she wanted to share with Joe the beauty and traditions of that part of Europe. Tell us something that might surprise people. Joe was a finished carpenter for 20 years as his first career. Rochelle is a retired Lt Colonel after serving 20 years in the US Air Force. Anything else you’d like to share? We are looking forward to seeing the community grow, meeting new people, and participating in the many amenities that will be forthcoming.

National Comfy Day
O
n February 20, National Comfy Day gives us all permission to get comfortable! We all deserve a day to get cozy in our favorite spot and relax. Short for comfortable, comfy is a word we use to describe the places and things that make us the most at ease. At the end of the day, we are all connected by a desire to be comfy. Some are drawn to their favorite blanket. Others define comfy by a sandy beach in the sunshine. Our beloved pets and special sweater add to our comfy satisfaction, too. Combine a little ambiance and take out, and the comfy level improves even more. National Comfy Day is all about achieving the perfect level of comfy and celebrating it to its fullest! Before partaking in National Comfy Day “activities,” here are some natural skincare recipes to get you started.

Wildlife Bird Sightings America is privileged with a stunning array of animals, plants, and wild destinations—each with its own incredible story. Get to know the amazing wildlife in your backyard and beyond.
N
orth America is home to an incredibly diverse range of birds, from the majestic national icon—the bald eagle— to the remarkably resilient whooping crane. More than
800 bird species occur in the United States. Some live here yearround, others migrate here seasonally, and some just stop in on their migratory routes to other countries. Of these birds, dozens are listed on the U.S. endangered species list, facing threats such as climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species. The National Wildlife Federation works to defend the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which provides protections for more than a thousand species. Perhaps the easiest way to identify a bird is the presence of feathers— but they share several other characteristics too. Birds are vertebrates, meaning they have backbones. All female birds lay eggs, in which the young develop before hatching. These animals are warm-blooded and can regulate their body temperature. All birds have wings, but not all birds use them to fly. Penguins and ostriches, for example, do not fly.
