Letter From the Lifestyle Team CHRISTINE FOSTER YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER

Happy Holidays! We can almost feel autumn and winter in the air … almost! Can you believe we are at the end of the year? And what a year it’s been! From spending quality time with new neighbors at our various socials and outings to meeting all the new and friendly Members who have moved in; this was a great year! It's the perfect season to take time to reflect on all that you’re thankful for and thankfully thankfully,, you can do that at our Friendsgiving Social on November 23. We will cheers to new friends, show off some culinary skills, and toast to future memories in our growing community. We are kicking off the holiday season with our annual Toy Drive benefiting children in our local community. You may start delivering your unwrapped toy donations to the Sales Gallery on November 1. If you’d like to volunteer to help deliver the toys on December 9, please contact your Lifestyle Team. November is American Diabetes Month and to bring awareness, we are going to soak up some of this fall Florida air on a nature walk at Baker Park on November 17, which also happens to be National Take a Hike Day! Health-focused programming is a big priority in our Esplanade Lifestyle, and we are eager to begin our monthly Wellness presentations, as well.

Save the date! We are excited to announce we will finally be hosting our first Signature Event at Esplanade by the Islands on December 10. “It’s a Wonderful Lifestyle” is our holiday event that takes place every year. I couldn’t think of a better way to introduce these Signature Events than this special, festive Esplanade tradition. We will be sure to communicate more information as it becomes available. In other breaking news, did you know ugly holiday sweaters had their own national day? We will be observing this quirky activity that happens to fall on the third Friday of December every year! Dust off those sweaters you packed away when you moved down here and join your neighbors at our Ugly Sweater and Cookie Exchange Social on December 17. Don’t forget to “fall back” an hour on November 7, as Daylight Saving Time is coming to an end. Finally, with Veterans Day around the corner, we’d like to take a moment to thank all our neighborhood veterans for their service. I also sincerely wish everybody a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy new year ahead. If you’re leaving town for the holidays, safe travels and we’ll see you next year!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The Vendituoli Family The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Q A

Why did you choose Naples/Esplanade by the Islands? Is your residency full-time or part-time? If part-time, where else do you spend your time? After visiting other parts of Florida, we chose Naples for the paradise-type weather year-round and specifically Esplanade by the Islands because of its proximity to everything. Close enough, but not too far! We will not be full-time Members just yet; we are snowbirds in training. We will spend the majority of our time at our home in Rhode Island.

Tell us about your family and current or past professions. Michael has been a Financial Advisor for over 20 years and Dina spent 25+ years in the hospitality industry, most recently as a hotel Operations Manager and is a grade 6 Catechist at their parish. Our 13-year-old daughter, Ava enjoys traveling and cooking. Ginger, our Pomeranian, is 5.

What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Also, tell us your hobbies. We look forward to the fitness and culinary center activities, bocce ball, and learning pickleball. We love going camping or “glamping” as we put it, in our RV. Dina is an avid NASCAR and NFL fan. She roots for the New York Giants and Denny Hamlin. She is also extremely passionate about all animals, loves to cook, entertain and garden. Michael watches ALL sports and roots primarily for New England teams. He believes the Patriots have 9 championships! The NFL season is always fun in our house. Michael enjoys playing golf, reading, going to Disney and eating his wife’s cooking. We both are religious and attend Catholic mass regularly.

Where is the most exciting place you've traveled to and what made it so memorable? This is too easy, our honeymoon! We spent 2 weeks touring Italy. From the food, history, architecture, wines and memories made, it was unforgettable.

8 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE NOV/DEC 2021

What is the best advice you have ever received or given? Everything happens for a reason. Some people come into your life as blessings, others come in as lessons.

Tell us something that might surprise people. Michael makes homemade limoncello and fragole-cello. Dina is an open book! Anything else you’d like to share? We are looking forward to living in Naples and enjoying the community of Esplanade by the Islands and all it has to offer.

CULINARY

How to Brine a Turkey or Chicken INGREDIENTS

Brine recipe is per 1 gallon of water (double recipe for larger birds). » 1 gallon warm Water » 2 cups Brown Sugar » 1 cup Sea or Kosher Salt (do not use Iodized Salt) » 6 cloves Garlic, smashed » 2 tbsp Peppercorns, whole » 6 Sage leaves » 4 fresh Thyme sprigs » 2 fresh Rosemary sprigs » 1 Orange peel » 1 Lemon peel » Butter

EQUIPMENT NEEDED »

Large container like a Stock Pot or Cooler (check space to fit in your refrigerator beforehand) » Long Spoon » Roasting Pan

Cookbook

DIRECTIONS

» Mix – Pour a gallon of warm water in your container. Add the brown sugar, salt, garlic, peels, herbs, and spices. Stir to dissolve the salt and sugar. » Dunk – Lower the turkey or chicken in the brine. Add additional cold water to cover the bird entirely, if necessary. » Refrigerated Soak – Determine the refrigerated brine-time based on the size of your bird. For a chicken, 12 to 24 hours. For a turkey 15 pounds or under, brine for 24 to 36 hours. For a turkey larger than 15 pounds, brine for up to 3 days. » Dry – Before you roast, take it out of the brine water and place on a rack to dry. Use paper towels to pat the bird dry, if needed. » Roast – Rub the turkey skin all over with butter. This helps create that perfect golden exterior. Roast at 325 degrees for about 15 minutes per pound. When temperature reaches 165° in the center of the breast and thigh, it is done. Let rest for at least 20 minutes before carving the turkey, or 10 minutes for the chicken.

In an effort to keep our community connected as we grow, we'd like to create a community cookbook! Cooking is the language of family tradition, culture, nostalgia, love, and fun in every home. From a salad to dessert, everything is welcome. Be sure to include a list of ingredients, step-by-step directions, serving size, prep time, and cooking time. WELLNESS

November is American Diabetes Month

In

the United States, 30 million adults aged ≥18 years are living with diabetes and 84 million with prediabetes. Among persons aged ≥65 years, one in four is estimated to have diabetes, and one in two has prediabetes. Persons with prediabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. However, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through a structured lifestyle change program that promotes weight loss, healthy eating, and increased physical activity. Making a few changes in your lifestyle now may help you avoid the serious health complications of diabetes in the future, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage. It's never too late to start.

There is little research, however, about the longterm benefits of these diets or their benefit in preventing diabetes. Your dietary goal should be to lose weight and then maintain a healthier
