Letter From the Lifestyle Team CHRISTINE FOSTER YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER

Happy fall y ’ all! We are starting to welcome back those who were away for the past couple of months and I truly hope everyone had an enjoyable summer! Who is ready for some cooler weather?! During the months of July and August, our generous Esplanade members made a great impact in our local community. Together, we donated over 250 school supplies to Avalon Elementary School where most of the students come from low-income families. Thank you for your contributions and for making a difference! I can hardly wait to see how much we collect next year! We have some amazing opportunities to meet your new neighbors in the upcoming months. There’s still so many of you I have yet to meet! We are so excited to start seeing more faces around the community and all the new friendships that are yet to be made. On September 11th, we will have the best of the BEST Journey & Styx tribute band LIVE onsite for all of you to come out and enjoy. Majesty of Rock Band has toured all over and it is guaranteed you will feel like you’re listening to the real thing! Bring your lawn chair, snacks, and beverages and gather around for our first live concert.

In the spirit of Halloween and many firsts here at Esplanade by the Islands, you don’t want to miss our Halloween “Shocktail” Party on October 29th! Come in your costumes to enter our costume contest and don’t forget to bring your favorite shocktails for some ghoulish good times. If you will be attending, we ask that you please register by October 1st. Robert & Jenny Carpentier

Q A

Why did you choose Naples/Esplanade by the Islands? Is your residency full-time or part-time? If part-time, where else do you spend your time? We have been searching for the perfect Florida home for a few years and after vacationing in several cities, we concluded that we wanted to be located on the Gulf coast. There are several beautiful locations to choose from, but ultimately, Esplanade by the Islands had everything we were looking for. The three-bedroom Villa floor plan met our needs and we fell in love with all the amenities that this community will soon offer. Not to mention, we are so close to the wonderful downtown area of Naples and the beautiful white sand beaches that we love. Esplanade will become our primary residence. However, we plan to spend our summers in northern Minnesota where we own a home on Pokegama Lake. Rob grew up in Minnesota and most of his family still lives there. However, as we get older, the winters are becoming less appealing. What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Also, tell us your hobbies. We are both very active adults who take advantage of outdoor activities that each season offers. During the summer months, we live on the water. We fish, kayak, paddleboard, water ski, and jet ski just about every day. Rob enjoys hunting in the fall. During the winter time, we love to snowmobile and downhill ski in Minnesota and Colorado. We both enjoy hiking and biking year-round. Jenny really enjoys taking landscape pictures. We look forward to local photography outings, finding bike trails, kayaking in the

6 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE SEP/OCT 2021

Everglades, walking/hiking events, and trying out any local breweries in the area. Tell us about your family and current or past professions. We both graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and retired as Air Force Lieutenant Colonels. Rob continues to fly the Boeing 777 Internationally for FedEx. We have two beautiful children who are Notre Dame Alumni. Our daughter, Kayla, lives and works in Austin, Texas. Our son is currently attending Medical School in Colorado. Our extended families mean everything to us and our world revolves around them. We spend a lot of time traveling to see our kids. What is the best advice you have ever received or given? We have tried to demonstrate and teach our children to always maintain your integrity in all that you do. I know it sounds a little cliché. But seriously, if you strive to do what you know to be right, and make those tough decisions even when no one is looking, you can sleep easy at night and be at peace. Where is the most exciting place you've traveled to and what made it so memorable? We have been so very fortunate to have traveled around the world in both the Air Force and with FedEx. It is hard to pick just one location. I think we have learned from all the moving around we have done, that you can make the best of anywhere you land with the right attitude. Some of the places we were most reluctant about going to have turned out to be our favorites. But we both agree we NEED to be near water!

WELLNESS

September Is Self-Care Awareness Month S

elf–Care Awareness Month is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential. Self-care is often neglected in our everyday lives. We all tend to put others needs before our own and it is crucial to remember, that we cannot fill another’s cup from our own empty vessel. While getting a massage or taking a walk are beautiful examples of taking time for our well-being, self-care can be more expansive than that. Self-care knows no boundaries. It is something that everyone, without any exclusions, can benefit from practicing on a daily basis. True self-care is not self-centered nor selfish; it is simply keeping yourself the focus of your own life. It’s about paying attention to how you feel in each moment, communicating clearly, speaking up for yourself and saying yes or no…guilt free.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use the month of September to make self-care a part of your daily routine – practice being good to yourself. It can be as simple as a conscious breath in the morning or as luxurious as time away from the pressures of everyday life. The kindness we show towards ourselves will manifest into a kinder world.

CINNAMON GOLDEN MILK LATTE

Cinnamon Golden Milk Latte, a warming turmeric latte recipe made with ground turmeric, ginger, coconut, and black pepper. An easy self-care ritual drink that is healthy AND tastes delicious! Golden milk, or turmeric tea, is a traditional Ayurvedic recipe made with antioxidant-rich turmeric that has been enjoyed for centuries. It is thought to have anti-inflammatory health benefits because of the turmeric and other spices, and has now become a trendy wellness ritual enjoyed across the world.

INGREDIENTS (last four optional) » 1 cup milk of choice » ½ teaspoon turmeric » ¼ teaspoon ginger powder » ¼ teaspoon coconut powder (or coconut oil) » ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract » 1/8 teaspoon black pepper (or less, just a tiny pinch) » 1 teaspoon maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey (to sweeten) » ¼ teaspoon cinnamon » 1/8 teaspoon cardamom » 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOT 1. Add milk to a small saucepan over medium high heat. 2. When milk is almost boiling, add turmeric, ginger powder, cinnamon, coconut powder, vanilla, and black pepper to pot and then mix well with a whisk. 3. Take milk off heat and pour into a coffee or tea mug, top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ICED 1. Add milk of choice and add turmeric, ginger powder, cinnamon, coconut powder, vanilla, and black pepper to a small mixing bowl or to a cocktail mixer. 2. Shake well to combine, then pour into glass topped with ice. Notes: Save time when making golden milk lattes by pre-mixing your golden milk spice mix and adding 1-2 tablespoons when ready to enjoy. Store extra golden milk in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days to reheat, or drink cold. Nutrition: This latte recipe is low in sodium, total fat, and contains no added sugar, and is high in protein and calcium (depending on the milk you use). It makes a great antioxidant-rich drink anytime of day.

CULINARY

Sizzle Dining: September 9th-29th S

izzle Dining is a 3-week long, annual, community-driven event that celebrates the culinary landscape in both Lee and Collier counties by offering 3-course, prix-fixe meals to local residents and visitors. Held once a year in September, the event includes 70+ of the best restaurants from Cape Coral down to Marco Island, and everywhere tasty in-between! Showing support has never been so delicious! Restaurants can offer either takeout, delivery, curbside, and indoor/outdoor dining, as permissible by public health guidelines. Diners can grab a meal in whatever format works best for them. The growing food scene has a lot to celebrate, and this event encourages people to leave their comfort zones and check out newto-them restaurants, including some of the smaller, independent spots we need for our food culture to thrive. Each of the participating restaurants will offer a delicious 3-course, prix-fixe dinner menu for either $29 or $39 (depending on location). Some restaurants may also offer a 2-course, prix-fixe lunch menu for just $19 or $24, and/or a brunch menu for $24 or $29.

Cookbook

For every Sizzle Dining meal purchased during the three-week event, each participating restaurant will donate $1 directly to Blessings in a Backpack SWFL, a local 501c3 charity that feeds food insecure elementary students every weekend during the school year. Sizzle Dining highlights and strengthens our local destination’s brand and culinary reputation. Attracting tourists to the area increases business for hotels, shopping centers, entertainment, and other local businesses. Everyone benefits from this impact and all the restaurants that participate see increased traffic and many new faces during the event.

FOUR EASY STEPS TO PARTICIPATE: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Please note, the details above are for informational purposes only. Sizzle Dining is not sponsored or hosted by Esplanade.

The Esplanade Cookbook will be an amazing way to give the community a piece of your home while connecting us all through the art of cooking! Please send a recipe you'd like to share!
