PET FEATURE / CONCIERGE

Furry Friends MEET Squiggie – LOVED BY JANET AND MIKE POWELL What is your pet's breed, age, and favorite treat? Squiggie is a 4-year-old mixed breed dog that loves Greenies! How did your fur baby join your family? Squiggie and her brother were living on the streets of Georgia. A wonderful organization called Poodle and Pooch of Orlando rescued her. We were to have Squigg for a week and became foster failures when we fell in love and she became a part of our family. What's your pets most unique characteristic or funny thing they're always doing? Squiggie just loves to roll and roll. At times, if clothes are on the floor, she rolls into them and comes out wearing them! If your pet could tell you what it thinks about it's life with you, what would it say? I believe Squiggie would say that life is awesome! She is always happy and loves every human she comes in contact with. When she meets you she will roll over for a belly rub. You just can't not be happy when she is around. She makes a wonderful addition to our family.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Loaded Cannon Distillery

TOUR & TASTING

We had a spirited good time, and no one had to walk the plank at Loaded Cannon Distillery. We learned that they are one of only a few true "grain to glass" distilleries in Florida and have a wide variety of spirits made locally. If you missed the fun, not to worry Matey, you can gather all your fellow pirates and do your own private tour! Give them a call to schedule yours with your friends!

Member

MINGLERS Monthly Member Minglers started up again in June and will continue every month with their signature cocktail. June, July, and August were a splash of summer fun and members did not let the rain slow them down!

Hurricane

SEMINAR An important part of living in Florida is learning to live within Florida’s ever-changing weather conditions. Though most Floridians have gotten comfortable with the unexpected, new members had many questions for our special guest. Sarasota local meteorologist was able to Zoom with many members from The Heights and give a detailed picture of what to expect with the upcoming hurricane season. We look forward to hosting this event again next year!

CULINARY

New Restaurants in Sarasota SELVA GRILL

OPHELIA'S ON THE BAY

67 N Cattlemen Road

9105 Midnight Pass Road

Selva’s Latin Fusion cuisine represents the marriage of exotic flavors from Latin America and the U.S. Their special emphasis on Peruvian dishes recognizes the contribution of Asian immigrants to Peru, who deliciously fused their cuisine and techniques with that of the locals. Selva offers innovative, intricately prepared dishes, plated and presented as works of art. The New York Times said Selva is “serving possibly the best food in Sarasota,” and that “everything on the menu is worth trying.”

Since it opened in 1988, Ophelia’s on the Bay has remained, at its core, a place for friends and family to gather to celebrate life, fun, and unique and flavorful food. The two glasswalled dining rooms and outside open air patio give you an unfettered, eye-level view of Little Sarasota Bay. Ophelia’s is easily accessible by land (three miles south of the Stickney Point Bridge on Siesta Key) or via water. Look for them at marker 48 on the intra coastal waterway. Ophelia’s on the Bay is the perfect place to linger over brunch or dinner.

KOJO 1289 North Palm Avenue A new innovative downtown spot for asian fusion and craft cocktails. Make reservations, dress up for date night, and enjoy this trendy new addition to the Sarasota food scene.

WELLNESS

Spiced Pomegranate Molasses Chicken Thighs The fall season is on the horizon, although in Florida we tend to feel the effects a little later in the year. No matter, we can still celebrate the season in our kitchen with some healthy recipes that are packed with fall flavors.

INGREDIENTS » 1 lemon » 1 ½ pounds fingerling potatoes, halved » 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided » ¾ teaspoon salt, divided » ¾ teaspoon ground pepper, divided » 1 ½ tablespoons honey » 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses (see Tip) » 1 teaspoon garam masala » 2 ¼ pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, trimmed » 4 cups chopped spinach » 1/3 cup chopped toasted walnuts » 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese » Pomegranate arils for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 450°F. 2. Zest lemon into a small bowl and set the zest aside. Cut the lemon in half and toss with potatoes, 2 tablespoons oil and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper on a large rimmed baking sheet. 3. Whisk 1 tablespoon oil, honey, pomegranate molasses, garam

12 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE SEP/OCT 2021

masala and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper in another small bowl. Nestle chicken into the potatoes and brush with the glaze. 4. Roast the chicken and potatoes until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part of a thigh without touching bone registers 165°F, 25 to 30 minutes. 5. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter. Sprinkle spinach on top of the potatoes; toss until wilted. Carefully juice the hot lemons into the bowl with the lemon zest. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, walnuts and feta. Drizzle the dressing over the vegetables and toss to coat. Serve the vegetables with the chicken; garnish with pomegranate arils, if desired. Tip: The pomegranate molasses used to glaze this chicken is made from pomegranate juice that's been reduced to a sweet-tart syrup. Look for it at well-stocked grocery stores or use 1 1/2 teaspoons each pomegranate juice and honey in its place here.
