A LOOK AHEAD
Getting Enough Sleep is Very Important
When you get the sleep that the body needs, between 7-9 hours a night, your body repairs itself the way it is supposed to. Lack of sleep can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes, and mood swings. The following are some things you can try to help you get a good night’s sleep:
» Rearrange your schedule to make time for sleep
» Limit screen time
» Have a cup of chamomile tea an hour before bed
» Limit your sugar consumption
» Make your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet
» Limit alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime
» Skip big meals at night
Getting enough sleep every night helps your body to function properly. It lowers your risk of disease, reduces stress, and improves your mood. Therefore, it is very important for you to prioritize getting enough hours of sleep every night for overall health and wellness!
Infused Water
The great part about infused water is that it’s so easy to make. All you need is fresh produce (fruit, veggies and herbs) along with cold water. Start by choosing what flavor you want, wash and chop your produce and simply add it to your water.
The amount of produce you use is up to you based on how much water you’re infusing and how much flavor you want to add. Obviously, the more produce you add, the more intense the flavor will be. The intensity will also depend on how long you let the ingredients soak/infuse.
STRAWBERRY THYME INFUSED WATER
Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C, which is known to reduce stress, while thyme is often used in aromatherapy practices for its calming and relaxing effects.
INGREDIENTS & DIRECTIONS
» 6 chopped strawberries
» 4 sprigs of fresh thyme
» 1-quart cold water
» Let the mixture infuse for at least two hours or overnight for full flavor.

Pickleball/Tennis Exercise for Increased Strength & Stability
Multi directional lunges are a compound movement that involves multiple joints and muscles making it an extremely functional exercise that is excellent for all fitness levels. It works the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, calves, core, and inner thighs. It can also help improve balance. Lunges can increase reaction time and functional stability when reaching for that baseline shot or receiving a volley to perform a dink to the other side of the net.
FRONT LUNGE
Begin with feet shoulder width apart, take a step forward with the right leg and drop the back knee down towards the floor. Be sure that the front knee does not extend past your toe and your back knee is in line with your hips and shoulders bending towards the floor. Drop down as far as you are comfortable, but do not let the front knee go past 90 degrees. Stand back up concentrating on the power coming from your front leg, foot firmly planted returning back up to a standing position. Repeat with your left leg forward and your right knee dropping down towards the floor.
SIDE LUNGE
Begin with feet shoulder width apart, take a step to the side
with the right leg. Keep the left leg straight and drop your hips behind as you bend the right knee. Drop down as far as you are comfortable, but do not let the front knee go past 90 degrees or extend over the toes. Push up to standing position with the power coming from your right leg and bring the feet back together in a standing position. Repeat with the left leg stepping sideways and your hips dropping back as your right knee bends.
REVERSE LUNGE
Begin with feet shoulder width apart, take a step back with the right leg and drop the back knee down towards the floor keeping it in line with your hips and shoulders. Make sure your front knee does not extend past the toes. Keep the chest lifted and drop down as far as you are comfortable. Stand back up and return your right leg back up to standing position.
COMBINING LUNGES
Each exercise can be performed individually or can be performed in combination by alternating front lunge back to standing position, to side lunge back to standing position and then, to back lunge and returning to standing position.
12 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE MAY/JUN 2023 FITNESS
Cuban Sandwich
The Cubano, or Cuban Sandwich, came to Florida along with Cuban immigrants, in the 19th century and quickly became widely popular in the state. Prior to this, versions of the Cuban have been recorded in pre-colonial Cuba where yucca was used in place of bread and often the filling was fish or bird meat. It took the arrival of the Spanish, who introduced ham and pork, for the Cuban we know and love today to be born.
To make an authentic Cuban sandwich, it really requires Cuban bread which has been baked with a palmetto leaf on top; however, Ciabatta or French bread will absolutely suffice.
DIRECTIONS
1. Slice the bread in half and spread yellow mustard on the inside of the bread.
2. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each half.
3. Place a slice of sweet, cured ham on one half of the bread.
4. Place some mojo marinated pork on the other half of the bread.
5. On one half of the bread, place thickly cut pickles then close up the sandwich.
6. Place the Cuban sandwich on a lightly greased griddle. Take a heavy skillet and place it on top of the sandwich so the weight can press the sandwich down.
7. When the bottom begins to turn crisp, turn the sandwich over and repeat.
Key Lime Martini
Florida’s most famous dessert is our inspiration for this sweet-yet-tart cocktail.
INGREDIENTS
» Graham cracker crumbs
» 2 ounces vanilla vodka
» 1/2 ounce Key Lime juice
» 2 tablespoons Coco Lopez cream of coconut
» 1 ounce pineapple juice
» 1 ounce heavy whipping cream
DIRECTIONS
1. Rim a glass with graham cracker crumbs.
2. Fill martini shaker with ice.
3. Add the remaining ingredients listed above.
4. Shake and pour through a strainer.
5. Garnish with a twist of lime peel.
