Furry Friends Meet Basil
LOVED BY MARY & JAY CHESSLO Tell us about your pet’s breed, age and birthday. Basil is a Coton de Tulear and he turned six years young this past August 27. While most people assume he is named after the herb, that is not the case. His full name is Basil Hayden, named after Jay’s favorite bourbon. What are your pet’s favorite pastimes? Since we live next to the Bark Park, Basil’s favorite pastime is watching out our front window for his friends to arrive at the park. He especially lets us know when his buddies arrive by barking, crying and pleading until we take him over to visit. What does he get reprimanded for the most? Basil loves people and he gets so excited when someone comes to visit. In fact, he thinks everyone came just to see him. Therefore, we continue to work with him to stop jumping, barking and licking our guests to death when they arrive. What are your pet’s best characteristics? Basil is super soft, cute, playful and lovable. Our two grandchildren, now seven and five years old, have grown up with Basil and the three of them adore each other. Tell us about the time you welcomed your pet to your loving home. In the fall of 2017 we were living in Naperville, Illinois. It had been five and a half years since we lost our dog Lucky at the age of 18. Lucky was a 10-month-old abandoned stray when we first got her and was a great dog, When she passed, I really thought we would never have another dog. At the time, our daughter was married with a 1-year-old beautiful little girl, so we decided to become
“snowbirds.” We had just bought a second home in North Naples with the goal of retiring soon and we had plenty of travel plans in our near future. Getting a dog just didn’t fit. Then, my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, and I traveled to Philadelphia to spend four months caring for her until her death. Jay, in the meantime, was taking care of everything at our Illinois residence, including buying and moving to another home in our same community. All of that was happening while we watched Hurricane Irma on The Weather Channel praying it would not damage the home in North Naples we just bought and had yet to live in. Long story short, my wonderful husband recognized with all this stress and heartache, what we needed was to find a dog who would be great with our grandchild and could also fly back and forth between Naples and Chicago. We hit the jackpot finding Basil from a breeder in Indiana. We picked him up at 8-weeks-old at the end of October. He was on his first flight to Naples that January. Our hope is that eventually Southwest will allow him to enroll in the Rapid Rewards program!

SPA / WELLNESS
Green Tea & Rose Petal Facial Steam
T
ry an at-home facial steam for a self-pampering treatment that will have you feeling like you’re at a luxurious spa! Green tea has the same astringent and antioxidant powers as black tea, but comes with an invigorating and energizing boost. Don’t forget that your facial steam session is an aromatherapy session as well! Rose petals have been used for skin care since the time of early civilizations due to their ability to soften and smooth skin (the natural oils in rose petals help your skin retain its moisture).
DIRECTIONS Make sure that your face is clean and free of any makeup or products. Boil approximately six cups of water. Transfer to a bowl and add tea and fresh or dried herbs and/or flowers (rose petals). Place the bowl on a table and let it cool for a few moments before placing a large towel over your head to form a “tent,” which will keep in the steam. Be extremely careful to hold your face about 18 inches away from the steaming water. If your face gets too close to the steam, it could burn your face! Let the steam bathe your face for 10 minutes, then rinse with cool water and follow up with a light moisturizer.
