KAITLYN ALDRIDGE YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER

Happy Spring!

Springtime is here at Esplanade Lake Club! Spring in Florida has such enjoyable weather, with perfectly warm temperatures and sunsets that take place later in the day, which allows more time for all the fun! It’s also the time we can take full advantage of those spring cleaning and decluttering activities, taking the opportunity to reorganize before the summer. We also cannot forget spring training for baseball begins and this season we are taking full advantage with two different spring training games for our Members to attend.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day one day early with a Pre-St. Paddy’s Party so you all can enjoy the holiday with your friends and neighbors here at Esplanade Lake Club! This month be a part of our wellness opportunities through rise and shine walks with our New Wellness & Sports Court Manager, Stacy Logue! Don’t forget to watch your email as we will hopefully be moving down to the new Venue soon!

I would like to kindly remind everyone that as our community grows, it is extremely important to register for all activities as well as cancel any registrations in a timely manner. This allows us to accurately anticipate the total attendance and ensure the most enjoyable Lifestyle programming for our Members! Sometimes activities and events require a participation minimum, so we also want to make sure we are meeting certain guidelines to host these activities.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or suggestions you may have. We are constantly looking to bring in new things to enhance your Lifestyle here at Lake Club! We’ve had many Members make some great suggestions for events and I am happy to say you will see some of those added to our calendar this year!

Stacy Logue

YOUR WELLNESS & SPORTS COURT MANAGER

Stacy is originally from New Hampshire and attended college at the University of New Hampshire receiving a B.S. in Recreation Management. After graduation, she worked in Vermont at a four season resort community for eight years as a Recreation Director where she met her husband, Patrick. They were married in 2000 and moved to Fort Myers where they have spent the last 22+ years.

They have two amazing twin daughters who are freshmen in college. One at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA and the other at Florida State University in Tallahassee (Go Noles!). Her husband owns a dog training company, and they have two rescue dogs of their own, Theodore and Phineas.

Stacy has been working in the recreation and fitness industry since graduating and spent the last 20 years at a 55 and better community in Fort Myers. Her roles have expanded over the years going from Aquatics & Recreation Director to Fitness Director & Communication Coordinator. In that role, she managed a group exercise schedule averaging 50-60 classes per week and helped in marketing and organization of events in the amenities center. Stacy’s fitness repertoire includes teaching various types of classes including total body strength, stretch, functional fitness, and a variety of aquatic exercise classes. She has taught swimming to children as young as 6 months through adults in their 80s wanting to learn to swim so they could play with their grandchildren in the water. She is a certified Aquatic Exercise Instructor, Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor and is a certified First Aid/CPR instructor with the American Red Cross.

Stacy has created relationships with local health care groups and many charitable organizations. She was recognized in 2022, receiving the Lee Health Partners in Wellness Award for her community. This network has allowed her to tie both entities together in offering health and wellness programs that are relevant, interesting and beneficial to Members.

One of the things I like most about working in amenities is creating a sense of community and fun in all that we do. This type of atmosphere creates a sense of belonging and is a wonderful way to motivate each other to set and achieve individual fitness and wellness goals. It is much easier to get up in the morning or come in the evening to work out or take a class when you have a positive atmosphere and friends to keep you accountable and motivated.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Resort Amenity Center and out on the courts as we get programs up and running!

In each Lifestyle Magazine issue, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing Members we have living in Esplanade Lake Club. If you would like to be featured, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Furry Friends Meet Lola Jewel

LOVED BY THE JACKSON FAMILY

Our pet’s name is Lola Jewel. She is a beagle hound mix and was born on October 20, 2020. Lola Jewel’s favorite treat is her Kong filled with her favorite treats.

She loves running in the dog park since she is young and has a lot of energy. Lola Jewel also loves laying by the pool; however, she hasn’t gotten the nerve up to go into the pool as of yet but we’re hoping it will happen soon.

She is a rescue dog from Kentucky. Lola Jewel’s dog mom was brought to Buffalo, NY which is where she, as well as her nine siblings, were born. Her early days were rough as she was brought back to the breeder twice. She seems to be so grateful for her adopted parents, as they rescued her and have given her a WONDERFUL life.

Lola Jewel loves having her picture taken. Check out a couple of her glamour shots!

Ready to Work! Setting Up Exercise Goals to Achieve Better Fitness

With the Esplanade Lake Club Resort Amenity opening, many of you may be looking to start utilizing the Fitness Center and possibly taking a class or two. Knowing where to start is a challenge if you’re new to exercise or trying to get back into the habit. The best workout schedule for you will depend on various factors, such as your age, fitness level, goals, and any physical restrictions you may have.

Having a plan to exercise during the week will provide structure to your workouts and ensure you incorporate strategies that help you see the results you want. Workout plans also help you know exactly what to do so you aren’t left guessing. There are three types of exercises you should include in your weekly schedule whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your health, get in better shape or all of the above.

CARDIO EXERCISE

These types of exercises can be any type of activity with the goal of getting your heart rate up, including walking, jogging, biking, hopping on an elliptical or taking a fitness class. Always warm up with light cardio exercise to get the blood flowing to your muscles and prepare your heart and lungs to work.

WEIGHT TRAINING/RESISTANCE TRAINING

You do not have to lift heavy weights or spend a lot of time lifting

or using resistance bands, but you do need to do it. Strengthening your muscles will help with daily function, as well as strengthen ligaments and tendons, which will strengthen your skeletal system and increase muscle mass and boost your metabolism.

FLEXIBILITY TRAINING

Though some may roll their eyes at this type of exercise, flexibility is key to achieving and maintaining a full range of motion through your muscles and joints. This type of exercise is always the one people tend to skip. Stretching after exercise will increase your flexibility and help your body recover after exercising.

With these types of exercises in mind, create a workout schedule for yourself. Exercises can be combined into your workout. For instance, you may want to do 20 minutes on an elliptical machine then follow with some upper body strength exercises, followed by 5-10 minutes of stretching.

Always include days of rest or active rest into your week. Rest days will allow the body to recover and benefit from all the work you accomplished in the days you have worked. Always check with a physician before starting an exercise program. If you have questions or would like to set up personal training with your Wellness & Sports Court Manager, Stacy Logue, email Stacy.Logue@ TeamEsplanade.com

MAR/APR 2023 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE 11 A LOOK AHEAD / ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Pets and Their Boosts to Physical & Mental Health

Millions of people around the world love their pets and view them as part of the family! We enjoy their companionship and going for walks, playing with them and even talking and singing to them.

Evidence suggests that attachment to pets is good for human health and even helps build a better community. When walking down the street or around the community you will more than likely run into someone who is walking their furry friend. Many times, when walking our dogs people will say hello or stop to start a conversation to learn more about our pet, what their name is and how old they are. These types of interactions often lead to friendly conversations about where people are from or what they do or did for a living. The end result is getting to know neighbors and creating new friendships.

It’s no secret that pets can contribute to our happiness. Studies show that dogs reduce stress, anxiety and depression; ease loneliness; encourage exercise and improve your overall health.

For example, people with dogs tend to have lower blood pressure and are less likely to develop heart disease. Just playing with a dog has been shown to raise levels of the feel-good brain chemicals oxytocin and dopamine, creating positive feelings and bonding for both the person and their pet (American Heart Association).

The benefit of owning a pet is not limited to dogs. People who own cats, reptiles, smaller furry creatures, fish and more all reap the benefits and give us a better sense of purpose in our everyday life.

A survey revealed something else interesting: The most popular and positive interaction with non-domesticated pets is bird watching. This helps explain why bird watching became such a thing early in quarantine, when morale was at record lows. As clinical psychologist Carla Marie Manly, PhD points out, research continues to show that interactions with animals can reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression, and you don’t need to own an animal to get them.

Raspberry Rhubarb Margarita

INGREDIENTS

» 2 oz tequila blanco

» 2 oz fresh lime juice

» 2 oz raspberry rhubarb syrup (recipe to the right)

» 2-3 jalapeño slices

» Fresh raspberries, limes, and jalapeño, for garnish

RASPBERRY RHUBARB SYRUP

1. Add 1/2 cup chopped rhubarb, 3/4 cup raspberries, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, and the juice of 1/2 a lemon to a small saucepot and cook over medium-high heat until the mixture comes to a low boil.

2. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the rhubarb is soft.

3. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Once cooled, mash the rhubarb and raspberries with the back of a fork or a wooden spoon.

4. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, extracting as much liquid as possible. Pour the liquid into a jar or sealed container and place in the refrigerator to cool.

DIRECTIONS

1. Place a thin layer of flake salt on a small plate. Rim glass with lime juice and dip each glass into the salt. Set aside.

2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and 2-3 jalapeño slices. Add the tequila, lime juice, and raspberry rhubarb syrup to the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

3. Fill prepared glass with ice and, using a cocktail strainer, pour the mixture over the ice. Garnish with fresh limes, fresh raspberries, and jalapeño slices, if desired.
