The great part about infused water is that it’s so easy to make. All you need is fresh produce (fruit, veggies and herbs) along with cold water. Start by choosing what flavor you want, wash and chop your produce and simply add it to your water.
The amount of produce you use is up to you based on how much water you’re infusing and how much flavor you want to add. Obviously, the more produce you add, the more intense the flavor will be. The intensity will also depend on how long you let the ingredients soak/infuse.
Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C, which is known to reduce stress, while thyme is often used in aromatherapy practices for its calming and relaxing effects.
» 6 chopped strawberries
» 4 sprigs of fresh thyme
» 1-quart cold water
» Let the mixture infuse for at least two hours or overnight for full flavor.

If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Dana: We like to play cards and games. We love spending time with family and friends.
Where did you move from?
Rich: When I retired, we moved from Michigan to North Carolina and lived in the state (two different houses) for 13 years. Then we moved to Florida because Dana always wanted to live there. After almost 10 years she wanted to spend more time with our daughters and granddaughters.
Why did you choose Esplanade at Northgate?
Rich: We wanted to live closer to our daughters and Dana wanted a place with more activities. We were looking in the Durham area and the Charlotte area.
Dana: Because we lived so far away, we had our daughter Julie and her realtor look for us. She knew what we were looking for and she found Northgate!
What’s your favorite food/drink?
Rich: My favorite food is definitely beef, anything Mexican, and beer.
Dana: I enjoy a lot of different foods. I like to drink water, coffee, red wine, and occasionally pineapple juice and rum.
What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
When/how did you two meet each other?
QRich: My company was installing a new General Accounting system at the bank where Dana worked. I needed someone to test out the system who wasn’t averse to new technology and she was selected for the job. She was good at the task, and she handled us “older guys” teasing her. So, I decided to ask her out.
Dana: We were married less than a year after our first date.
Do have children or grandchildren?
AWe have two daughters, Cristin Yvonne and Julie Elizabeth. Our granddaughters are Leah (age 14), Elise (age 11) and Lola (age 4).
What is your favorite activity to do together?
Rich: Taking trips with our friends and former neighbors. Now we enjoy spending more time with the kids and grandkids.
Rich: I like working around the yard and this is the first place where I don’t need to mow. I really did enjoy mowing and yard work in general. I like taking walks and will be checking out the trails around here. One of my past hobbies was making stained glass windows.
Dana: We enjoy walking together.
Favorite travel destinations and why?
Rich: I would say New Zealand was a favorite! We did a cruise to the Galapagos, Ecuador and Peru. We also did a South American cruise from Santiago, Chili to Ft. Lauderdale. The many ports of call and tours were worthwhile.
Dana: We’ve also traveled to Panama Canal, South America, and Machu Picchu. We’ve visited many states, including Hawaii for our honeymoon and 30th anniversary. The Galapagos and New Zealand were my favorites.
What is something you believe everyone should do at least once in their life?
Rich: Travel and see as much of the world as possible. Dana: Visit The Galapagos and New Zealand.

We welcomed spring with the Community Garden Grand Opening! Our Envoy Member Lynn Ray assisted Members with planting Marigold seeds and Lifestyle took photos of Members at the Monarch Butterfly wing prop. The Cubano, or Cuban Sandwich, came to Florida along with Cuban immigrants, in the 19th century and quickly became widely popular in the state. Prior to this, versions of the Cuban have been recorded in pre-colonial Cuba where yucca was used in place of bread and often the filling was fish or bird meat. It took the arrival of the Spanish, who introduced ham and pork, for the Cuban we know and love today to be born.
To make an authentic Cuban sandwich, it really requires Cuban bread which has been baked with a palmetto leaf on top; however, Ciabatta or French bread will absolutely suffice.
1. Slice the bread in half and spread yellow mustard on the inside of the bread.
2. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each half.
3. Place a slice of sweet, cured ham on one half of the bread.
4. Place some mojo marinated pork on the other half of the bread.
5. On one half of the bread, place thickly cut pickles then close up the sandwich.
6. Place the Cuban sandwich on a lightly greased griddle. Take a heavy skillet and place it on top of the sandwich so the weight can press the sandwich down.
7. When the bottom begins to turn crisp, turn the sandwich over and repeat.
