Letter From the Lifestyle Team

Summer is on the Way!

It’s been a fruitful year so far filled with wonderful events and activities. Members recently enjoyed a fabulous evening at the Seaside Social Signature Event dancing the night away. Members also learned how to make their own sushi rolls at the Cooking & Cocktail Series: The Art of Sushi and Sake on April 3 with National Director of Food, Beverage & Culinary Experience, Patrick Scully. Members also enjoyed a sampling of delicious sake! Then the following day, Members explored Resort Lifestyle offerings through the Troon and Esplanade Resort Experiences Debut.

I’d like to extend a big welcome to all our new Members who have moved here recently. The Lifestyle team is ecstatic that you chose to make Esplanade at Tradition the place you call home and we look forward to providing you with a Resort Lifestyle program that is engaging and interesting. If there is anything you need, we are here for you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!

As you peruse the following pages, please take note of all of the exciting upcoming events we have planned for you. Sign up today to join us for Karaoke Night on May 11, the Memorial Day BBQ Potluck on May 29, and a trip to the Elliott Museum on June 16 to view “The Highwaymen - From the Street Corner to the Smithsonian” exhibit. We hope to see you soon!

MAY/JUN 2023 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE 3 Amber

Amber Ellis

YOUR NEW LIFESTYLE MANAGER

Amber grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and finished high school in upstate New York (hello Fingerlakes fans!). She graduated from the University at Buffalo with a B.S. in Business Administration and earned an M.A. in International Events Management from London Metropolitan University where she studied in both The Netherlands and in London.

Prior to starting at Esplanade at Tradition, Amber worked with a nonprofit organization, JustWorld International, in Wellington, Florida, for nine years where she organized fundraisers at equestrian events across the U.S. and Canada; led project trips to Honduras, Guatemala, and Cambodia with donors; and managed school partnerships and the volunteer program. Through her work with the organization, she discovered her love of working with volunteers and managed the Martin County School District’s volunteer program for three years.

Amber enjoys exploring the area, water activities, going out to eat, riding, playing pickleball, and spending time with her family. She invites you to stop by the Esplanade Sales Gallery to chat with her about your favorite activities and any ideas you have for your community. “It has been wonderful meeting some of the Members at our last couple of events. I look forward to getting to know each of you here at Esplanade at Tradition and helping you live your best Resort Lifestyle!”

» Calms your mind

» Helps decrease tension in headaches

The most common forms of stretching techniques are static and dynamic, and both have wonderful benefits for your body.

Furry Friends Meet Yitzie, Ninja & Wonton

Yitzie is an 11-year-old Caique who was born in Staten Island on March 18, 2011. For the first 8 years of his life, he accompanied me to the medical office where I worked. The children at my job were able to see him there and he made their day. He is known to be a very sociable breed who bonds with multiple people who take care of him. He loves to go for car rides while sitting on my shoulder. I make sure to take him on a ride as often as I can. While traveling to Florida, which was a twoday trip, he stayed by my side the whole time. He is very loving and would love to meet you!

We also have two cats named Ninja and Wonton who were both pandemic babies. Wanton was born in Niagara Falls where we had to travel to get her and Ninja was born in New Jersey. They are both cuddle buddies and they love to sit out by the pool on the lanai. They are very friendly with people, but tend to watch Yitzie very closely (no worries though, because we are always there to make sure everything is okay)! Come and meet our loving furry crew.

Shannon Summers

In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people who call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Shannon Summers was born in a small town in Kansas where her mother was a registered nurse and her father was a conductor for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. She has seven brothers (five older and two younger) and is blessed to have three children (two boys and one girl), one grandson, and two grand dogs.

Shannon has an affinity for delectable treats, with her favorites being anything chocolate! She proudly served in the United States Air Force during the ‘70s and ‘80s where she started as a maintenance chief on B52-D model aircraft that flew out of Guam to support the war in Vietnam. She later cross-trained into communications as a switchboard operator. “You know, like Lily Tomlin’s Ernestine character!” she shares.

She retired from the clerical field and spent the next 20 plus years assisting her late husband with his construction business. She shares a home with her daughter, Lydia, and Lydia’s husband, John and finds joy in walking, quilting, reading, and doing jigsaw puzzles. “I am always trying to learn new things,” she shares. “I’m happy to be here and am enjoying living in a new state, especially the weather, and getting to know new people here at Esplanade.”

Getting Enough Sleep is Very Important

When you get the sleep that the body needs, between 7-9 hours a night, your body repairs itself the way it is supposed to. Lack of sleep can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes, and mood swings. The following are some things you can try to help you get a good night’s sleep:

» Rearrange your schedule to make time for sleep

» Limit screen time

» Have a cup of chamomile tea an hour before bed

» Limit your sugar consumption

» Make your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet

» Limit alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime

» Skip big meals at night

Getting enough sleep every night helps your body to function properly. It lowers your risk of disease, reduces stress, and improves your mood. Therefore, it is very important for you to prioritize getting enough hours of sleep every night for overall health and wellness!

12 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE MAY/JUN 2023 GET INVOLVED

Cuban Sandwich

The Cubano, or Cuban Sandwich, came to Florida along with Cuban immigrants, in the 19th century and quickly became widely popular in the state. Prior to this, versions of the Cuban have been recorded in pre-colonial Cuba where yucca was used in place of bread and often the filling was fish or bird meat. It took the arrival of the Spanish, who introduced ham and pork, for the Cuban we know and love today to be born.

To make an authentic Cuban sandwich, it really requires Cuban bread which has been baked with a palmetto leaf on top; however, Ciabatta or French bread will absolutely suffice.

DIRECTIONS

1. Slice the bread in half and spread yellow mustard on the inside of the bread.

2. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each half.

3. Place a slice of sweet, cured ham on one half of the bread.

4. Place some mojo marinated pork on the other half of the bread.

5. On one half of the bread, place thickly cut pickles then close up the sandwich.

6. Place the Cuban sandwich on a lightly greased griddle. Take a heavy skillet and place it on top of the sandwich so the weight can press the sandwich down.

7. When the bottom begins to turn crisp, turn the sandwich over and repeat.

Key Lime Martini

Florida’s most famous dessert is our inspiration for this sweet-yet-tart cocktail.

INGREDIENTS

» Graham cracker crumbs

» 2 ounces vanilla vodka

» 1/2 ounce Key Lime juice

» 2 tablespoons Coco Lopez cream of coconut

» 1 ounce pineapple juice

» 1 ounce heavy whipping cream

DIRECTIONS

1. Rim a glass with graham cracker crumbs.

2. Fill martini shaker with ice.

3. Add the remaining ingredients listed above.

4. Shake and pour through a strainer.

5. Garnish with a twist of lime peel.
