Letter From the Lifestyle Team

CORRIN GODLEVSKE YOUR RESORT LIFESTYLE MANAGER

Happy New Year!

I cannot believe it is already 2023; how time flies when you are having fun! With the new year here, I would love to share my top five favorite Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch moments of 2022 with you all.

The Grand Opening! After all the waiting, our beautiful Resort Amenity Center has arrived. Sometimes you can’t rush perfection. It was an honor to celebrate and dance the night away with you.

Bingo! If you know, you know. We are a competitive group here at Wiregrass Ranch. I will never forget the laughs of the first Bingo Night and the many wrong B-I-N-G-O-S.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace! Esplanade at Wiregrass paired with the local Sleep in Heavenly Peace Chapter and Taylor Morrison to make over 50 beds for local children in need.

Peace, Love and Esplanade! This was the first Signature Event of the year and one of my favorites, featuring a live band, henna, and tarot card reading.

Cooking & Cocktail Series! Who doesn’t love good food, good company, and a great drink? National Manager of Food, Wine and Culinary Experience Patrick Scully is always a treat to host at Wiregrass Ranch. The great news is, we have many more curated culinary experiences coming in the future.

As always, the world is your oyster. Please let me know if you are passionate about a future event or want to see something in the community! The best is yet to come. I look forward to hosting you at our next Inspired Event.

David Lloyd

YOUR HEAD COURT SPORTS PROFESSIONAL

David Lloyd comes to us as a USPTA Certified Elite Tennis Professional and IPTPA Certified Level II Pickleball Professional. With 30 years’ experience as a Director of Tennis & Pickleball, business proprietor, and former collegiate tennis player, David is looking forward to getting out on the courts with Members. With the help of his team at Traveling Tennis Pros, he set up tennis and pickleball lessons and events at 10 Esplanade properties.

David is very excited to now be based here as the full-time Head Court Sports Professional. His first priority is to meet as many Members as possible to get feedback on what their priorities are when it comes to court sports. Once the courts open, David’s goal is to provide something for all tennis and pickleball players regardless of what level they play. If Members are looking for group or private lessons, David plans to be available at times that are most convenient for them. A big priority will also be placed on fun events, mixers with other clubs and intra-club tournaments with the emphasis on fun and being social.

After playing the junior tennis circuit in South Carolina, David was awarded a scholarship to Francis Marion University where he played on the Men’s Tennis Team. With a winning record for the FMU Patriots, David graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and took a position as Director of Tennis at Birchwood Tennis Centre in Warrington, England. He also continued competing on the Lawn Tennis Association Circuit, where he played LTA tournaments throughout Great Britain for three years.

David got the pickleball bug soon after moving to Florida in 2009. Under the tutelage of Joey Farias, multiple U.S. Open and USAPA Nationals pro medalists and top-10 men’s open player, David earned an IPTPA Level II certification. He soon began conducting private pickleball and group lessons, and large boot camps as well as playing exhibition matches throughout Florida. In addition to managing pickleball instruction through his business Traveling Tennis Pros, David has consulted for other pickleball teaching businesses in New York and the eastern United States.

When David is not working on the courts, he likes to ride his Trek bicycle and explore the off-road trails of Florida, play tennis, golf and pickleball with friends and spend time with his wife, Susan. David will be celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary in December. Another passion of David’s is writing. He has written a handful of novels and novellas. His most successful is Gulf Coast City, which made it to number 21 on the Amazon Best seller list.

David Lloyd can be contacted at 813-767-3458 for private lessons, group clinics, racquet stringing or to purchase pickleball paddles.

GASPARILLA INVASION, PARADE OF PIRATES & PIRATE FEST

Saturday, January 28 Downtown Tampa At 11:30 a.m. the Jose Gasparilla emerges at the south end of Hillsborough Bay followed by hundreds of boats. The Flotilla then makes its way into Seddon Channel. Amidst a volley of cannon fire, the City is defenseless. When the Jose Gasparilla docks at the Tampa Convention Center (1 p.m.), the Mayor of Tampa surrenders the Key to the City to the Captain of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. To celebrate their capture of the city, the Captain and his Krewe share their wealth – glittering beads, treasures and doubloons – with a lively, enthusiastic crowd all along the 4.5-mile parade route. “Make way, mateys!” shout Tampa’s original buccaneers as they wind their way down historic Bayshore Blvd and into downtown Tampa – amidst colorful costumes and festive music. The parade will boast over 140 units – including more than 103 elaborate floats, 5 marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes and, of course, those infamous Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla pirates! An expanded Pirate Fest will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa, presented by Bud Light Seltzer. Pirate Fest will feature stages with live entertainment pre and post parade in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park (Ashley and Twiggs), and MacDill Park (Ashley and Whiting). Entertainment lineup will be announced soon. For more information, visit main.gasparillapiratefest.com

Joyce & Jack North

The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Why did you choose Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch?

QWe moved to Wesley Chapel to be closer to our youngest daughter in Tampa. We have two other children as well. One lives in Chicago and the other lives in San Clemente. We came from Esplanade at Lakewood Ranch and wanted to continue the concept of “active lifestyle and community.” We saw Esplanade at Wiregrass and knew this would be our new home!

What Lifestyle Programming are you most interested in?

What are your hobbies?

Hands down, pickleball! The courts are a thing of beauty!

We fell in love with the sport when we moved here from Ohio - all aspects of it, including competition, strategy, challenges, being outside and, of course, the social aspect! We are excited about where Coach David will take our newly formed group. Jack’s other hobby is biking. Joyce’s other hobbies include running and reading. They are looking forward to the newly formed Dominoes Club.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received or given?

Be your true self and recognize five things every day you have to be grateful for. My best advice is everyone has a story, take the time to listen.

Tell us something that may surprise people.

Jack: I was part of a crew in a sailboat race (32’ catamaran) from Key West to Cuba!

Joyce: I won 1st Place in a lip sync contest on a cruise ship to the great Diana Ross and The Supremes’ song, Stop! In the Name of Love!

Where is the most exciting place you’ve traveled to and what made it so memorable?

For our 25th wedding anniversary we went to Ireland and Florence, Italy. It was wonderful. Joyce had never traveled to Europe, but Jack had. Ireland was a shade of green we had never seen before and everyone was so friendly. In Florence, the food, wine and architecture were magical.

12 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE JAN/FEB 2023 WELLNESS

Rose Water & Its Benefits

If you don’t want to waste the roses from Valentine’s Day, try making rose water! Rose water is exactly as it sounds, roses plus water. It gives you all the benefits of water plus the bonus of the anti-inflammatory and hydrating advantages of rose. Plus, it smells awesome. Some benefits include helping balance the pH of skin, soothing skin irritation, reducing redness (has anti-inflammatory properties), including rosacea and eczema, and it may reduce fine lines and wrinkles!

SOME USES OF ROSE WATER

» Skin Toner: By and far this is the number one way many like to use it. Apple cider vinegar can also be a great skin toner but let’s be real, rose water smells so much better and is just as effective. See recipe to the right.

» In the Bath: Add about a cup to your bath water for extra hydration and relaxation from the scent.

» Natural Perfume: You may be better off using this as a natural fragrance than conventional perfumes.

» Face Refresher/Make-Up Setter: Spray the rose water on your face when you’re at your 3 p.m. slump … it really works

to refresh you! It is also a great way to set your make-up after you apply it.

HOW TO MAKE ROSE WATER

The ingredients are simple - rose petals and distilled water. The process is just as easy!

1. Remove the rose petals from their stems and run them under lukewarm water to remove any leftover residue.

2. Add petals to a large pot and top with enough distilled water to just cover (no more or you’ll dilute your rose water).

3. Over medium-low heat, bring the water to a simmer and cover.

4. Let the water simmer for 20-30 minutes or until petals have lost their color and are a pale pink.

5. Strain the mixture into a large bowl to separate the petals from the water.

6. Discard petals and store the rose water in a clean air tight jar or spray bottle.

7. Rose water can be kept in the fridge for up to six months (in airtight container).

National Bloody Mary Day

National Bloody Mary Day falls on January 1, which is convenient for everyone who may have partied a little too much the night before. Ring in the year by celebrating with the famous cocktail (see the Best Ever Bloody Mary recipe below). We’ll note that while it can alleviate hangover symptoms, it can further dehydrate you, so drink responsibly. Still, a Bloody Mary is the Number 1 brunch cocktail in the U.S. Take that, mimosas.

INGREDIENTS

» 3 cups tomato juice

» 3 tablespoons lemon juice

» 3 tablespoons lime juice

» 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

» 1 1⁄2 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

» 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder

» 3⁄4 teaspoon Tabasco Sauce

» 3⁄4 teaspoon celery salt

» 1⁄2 teaspoon coarse black pepper

» 1⁄3 cup pickle juice

» 1 ounce vodka, per drink

DIRECTIONS

1. In a blender combine the tomato juice, lemon juice, lime juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pickle juice, hot sauce and process until smooth. Transfer to a nonreactive container and add celery salt and black pepper, to taste. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, at least 2 hours and up to overnight.

2. When ready to serve, fill each glass with ice and add 1 ounce of vodka, then fill the glass with the Bloody Mary mix. Stir well, and garnish each glass with your favorite veggie, pickle, celery, pickled green bean, or a pickled okra.
