inter is finally behind us and the weather continues to get warmer each day. Perhaps it is a good time for residents to begin outdoor tasks before the temperature gets much higher. Please check your street tree to be sure it is cut 14 feet above the street and 8 feet above the sidewalk. Trim any branches that could interfere with or block street signs and street lights. You may also want to check your property trees. Do they need to be trimmed or shaped, maybe some bracing to help keep them growing straight? Take a look at the house; does it need to be painted or do the roof or gutters need to be cleaned? What about your driveway and sidewalk - do they need to be pressure washed? Also, do you need to make landscaping alterations? We have a plant list for homeowners to help you modify your front and back yard alterations. Please remember that cleaning up around your house does not require approval from the HOA. However, if you are considering making changes to the exterior, you must submit an application for any of the work you plan to perform for ARC approval.

except for sand hill cranes statues which can be 43” tall; no other tall items are permitted. • Bird houses, bird feeders, birdbaths, water features, benches and chairs are not permitted in the front or side yards. • Accessories must be located within the mulched areas contiguous to the house and be of a natural or neutral color. • Wall art can be placed on the entryway and porch walls as long as the wall does not face the street. • Wall art cannot exceed 36” high by 36” wide and the ARC application should include a picture of the piece with the description of where it is to be placed. Remember, the governing documents are in place to help ensure that the investment you’ve made in your home increases in value and the desirable reputation of Victoria Park.

Lawn Accessories & Wall Art Some of the highlights of the policies for lawn accessories and wall art on houses include: • Only three items in the front beds, no bigger than 18” x 18”,

Memorable Weddings at VHGC

I

would like to introduce myself as the General Manager at Victoria Hills Golf Club. Being an Ohio native, I was born in Chillicothe and grew up in New London before attending and graduating from the Ohio State University. Having a passion for golf at an early age, I was fortunate to win multiple junior golf tournaments through my high school years. I then had the opportunity to attend and play golf on the Ohio State University golf team. After graduating college, I worked for Ecolab in both Joliet, Illinois and Iselin, New Jersey as the Distribution Manager. I moved to Florida in 1995 with my wife Lisa to work at World Woods Golf Club as the PGA Golf Professional and General Manager. This past December I moved to DeLand to work at Victoria Hills. I have been married to my wife Lisa for 27 years, who is a Certified Registered Dietician and currently works for Davita. We have two children attending the University of North Florida: Acadia who will be graduating this year and Cameron who will be in his third year. Over the past few months, the transition has been quite smooth, and it has been a pleasure meeting the membership and being part of such a wonderful staff. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities, and with the continued cooperation of the membership and surrounding community, I am excited about the continuous improvements we can achieve together. Lisa White (pictured left), the Director of Sales & Events at Victoria Hills, has planned and coordinated numerous memorable weddings and special events in our lovely Azalea Room. We continue to be a popular host for many private functions. Lisa has partnered with Justine Tucker, Lifestyle Director at Victoria Park, coordinating multiple community events over the past several months for individuals of all ages at the club. Please continue to look for future upcoming events on the Victoria Park email blasts, website calendar, and all social media platforms. Sparrow’s Grille weekly events, such as Pasta Night on Wednesday,

Wing Night on Thursday, Prime Rib Night on the last Friday of the month, and Burger Night on Saturday continue to be extremely popular with our residents. Executive Chef Mike Morrison, along with Chef de Cuisine, Matt Hayman, have participated in several communitywide food festivals, as well as hosting very popular wine tastings and specialty dinners at the club. During the first quarter of this year Brad Tucker, Golf Superintendent, has focused his efforts on numerous areas making the overall facility more aesthetically pleasing. One area has been to “raise the canopies” of the trees in the parking lot to improve the overall visibility of the clubhouse and parking lot area. In addition, Brad has created an improved “look and feel” of the golf course with the trimming of trees along the cart paths on all the golf holes. This will provide stronger turf conditions due to increased exposure to sunlight. With continued chemical and fertilizer applications throughout the golf course, the health of the facility will remain in excellent condition and we look forward to having you visit and play Victoria Hills. Mike Barile (pictured left), golf professional at Victoria Hills, has done an excellent job of hosting golf tournaments and events. Most recently, Victoria Hills hosted a Callaway fitting day where many members and guests were fitted with the most recent Callaway golf equipment. There are major junior golf events scheduled with the AJGA and IMG, along with the Mayor’s Annual Golf Tournament and the Junior Service League, which benefits local businesses and organizations. We look forward to your continued support of the club by being more active in the events and tournaments that are hosted at Victoria Hills and in Victoria Park.

SCOTT WYCKOFF is the General Manager of the Victoria Hills Golf Club in Victoria Park. You can reach him at 386-738-6000 or by email at SWyckoff@Hampton.Golf.

Resident Spotlight: Opera Singer Susan Neves & General Director Ian Campbell BY JUSTINE TUCKER, LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR

I

had the great pleasure of meeting two very well-known talents right here in our neighborhood! Susan Neves is a dramatic soprano and kicked off her music career in 1983 after she completed her Master’s Degree at the Manhattan School of Music in 1976. Susan has now performed over 1,000 times in over 100 different places. She commands a repertoire of some of the most challenging roles written for soprano and is a sought-after teacher and coach in New York City and Orlando. She has taught at Stetson University and also at the Miami Summer Music Festival at Florida International University.

to be closer to her. To this day these two still take on the music world and travel in-between to enjoy time together. What a journey it has been for Susan and Ian! Interested in singing opera? Susan Neves teaches lessons! Contact her at SusanRNeves@aol.com.

In 2010, Susan auditioned for Stage Director Ian Campbell for Murder in the Cathedral and it has been history ever since between the two. Ian was not only the General Director and Artistic Director of San Diego Opera, but is also a known opera singer. He began his career 52 years ago as a founding member of Australia’s first full-time opera company, known as Opera Australia. Ian sang a variety of tenor roles which soon turned into producing over hundreds of productions. This dynamic duo moved into Victoria Park in 2014 as Susan’s mother, Sylvaine Neves lives in Cresswind at Victoria Gardens and they wanted

The 1st Annual “Around the World” Beer and Wine Taste Fest was a huge success. There were 110 residents enrolled for this event. We introduced five different countries, including Japan, Germany, Ireland, Italy and our very own home, USA. We had beer, wine and food tastings to represent each country. Everyone enjoyed the perfect weather, live entertainment and, of course, their friends and neighbors. Our next event will be in October 2019.
