Did Someone Say Golden Egg? By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge
On April first, it’s both April Fool’s Day and Easter. I, for one, am looking forward to my Easter basket and Easter egg hunt. Yes, that’s right! There is an Easter egg hunt for the adults in my family. What we do is put money in eggs and hide them around the house. Each year we rotate the house where we have our Easter gathering. Of course, everyone wants that golden egg. It’s great fun! Giselle, my daughter, will be attending the Spring Carnival that Lifestyles and the volunteers host. They do such a fantastic job. My daughter truly enjoys this event and it couldn’t be done without so many talented volunteers. I’m thankful for this wonderful gift of labor and love that brings my child boundless joy. Now let’s talk about events that will hopefully bring you joy outside of the community.
New Musical at The Winter Park Playhouse
If you’re interested in musicals, The Winter Park Playhouse presents NUNSENSE A-MEN! from April 5th-21st. Ticket prices are $32 to $42, depending on show times. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.winterparkplayhouse.org.
Spring Garden Festival in Coral Gables

Why YOU Need a Disaster Kit
[ Department] Articles
Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
A disaster supply kit is intended to provide the items needed to carry you through the effects of a major disaster. Such a disaster could be a natural weather phenomenon like a hurricane or a manmade disaster like a terrorist attack. Putting together a disaster kit means answering questions like:
include a first aid kit, matches, mosquito repellent and maybe a lantern. Keep an “old-fashioned” corded phone on hand. It does not need power to function (unless you have internet phone service for your landline, in which case power would be required for the adapter).
• What am I going to eat and drink if power is out and access to groceries is cut off? • How will I know what is going on? • What tools and supplies will I need to mitigate damage? • What kinds of information will I need to recover my property and normal life? • What supplies should I take with me if I am forced to leave home?
Gather together your important papers: copies of insurance policies (house, car, life, medical coverage information), list of contacts for these and family and friends, list of doctors and medications, legal documents, bank account information, credit card information, normal bills, and passports. Put these copies in a water-tight container for protection as well as quick access and transport. Your smart phone can store most of this, but what happens when the battery runs down and you don’t have power to recharge its battery?
First and foremost you will need canned or dry, non-perishable foods that will last at least three days. Select foods you will actually eat. Don’t forget a manual can opener as power may be out. Water is also very important—a gallon per person, per day. Buy or refill soft drink bottles. And don’t forget a couple weeks of your medications; you may not be able to refill them for days or weeks depending on the extent of disaster damage. Be sure to have a battery-powered radio to keep up with the weather outlook, road conditions and disaster-related relief information. A weather radio is an excellent investment. Keep its battery in good shape.
Don’t forget pet supplies and medications, plus identification information in case they run away in the confusion. If you have particular medical support needs, plan how to deal with keeping these operating or using portable units. You will need a suitable container for all these supplies—plastic bin(s), even garbage bags, and cardboard boxes. A key caution here: don’t get the largest bin you can find or you won’t be able to lift or carry it; smaller ones may be better and help you organize. If you decide to leave or need to leave (because your home is damaged and not fit for occupancy) take all these things with you, plus blankets and clothing for the weather you are heading toward. You may get stranded in your car along the way. Also, smaller containers will fit in your car more easily. You can gather all this when you need it if you have prior warning as in a hurricane scenario, but what if the disaster is a tornado in the middle of the night—tonight? Be prepared; no one can do it for you! You need to get working on this now—before you need it. Do a little each week; set up a schedule to develop each component. We are in tornado season in Florida now and hurricane season begins June 1st.
Throw in some common household tools for fixing minor damage to your home. These include duct tape, garbage bags, 100 feet of rope, some tarps, a few hand tools and enough flashlights for each family member, with spare batteries for the latter. Do not plan to use candles; they are the cause of much damage in disasters. Also
