Hearts & Hugs
By Jana Malik Director of Activities Valentine’s Day, to me at least, is not just about saying “I love you” to your spouse or partner, it’s about everyone in your life that you love and appreciate. Send a “Happy Valentine’s Day” or a “Thanks for Being My Friend” card, give a big hug, or make a call to say hi and check in with a friend or family member on this loving day. This year, Lifestyles Activities has a Dinner in Mosaics combined with a Show in the Ballroom event that we hope will appeal to all, friends and lovers. We will also have the traditional wine, dine and dancing Valentine’s Day Gala that will be themed around Sweetheart candies.
Club Presidents Meeting
The mandatory annual Club Presidents Meeting will take place in the Ballroom at 1pm on Wednesday, February 28th. Save the date for the President or a representative and an additional member to attend. We will be making calls to all clubs this month to check and update contact information for our files.
New Club Bulletin Board
By the end of this quarter, due to the numerous remodeling projects happening in other rooms, a new bulletin board will be designed and built by the Solivita Maintenance Team, in keeping with the beautiful Palms décor, for Solivita Clubs to post their event and meeting fliers. It will be located in The Palms Lobby before entering the Business Center. This addition brings our total to five bulletin boards dedicated to posting club fliers and are located in the Library, Ceramics Gallery, Mediterranean Skyline hallway, Riviera Spa and Fitness Center, and The Palms Lobby. All five fliers must be delivered to the Lifestyles Activities Office where volunteers will put them in clear sleeves and post them for you. Business solicitations and club fliers posted without a clear sleeve will be removed.
Book It Dano!
Last month I was happy to report that we have acquired an additional multipurpose room in the Bistro where the Library was formerly located thanks to Tony Iorio and Dan Young of AV Homes and Sheri Wollschlager, Club Manager. At the time of writing, we don’t have a name for this room or have a definite open date, but it is hoped to be by mid-February. This new room is expected to have nine card tables. In the meantime, we are going to schedule new card/game
Reflections | February 2018 |
playing groups in this space. A new card/game playing group is one that doesn’t currently play in any of the club facilities multipurpose rooms. Or, if you have a card/game playing group currently scheduled in one of the club facilities and want to switch to this new room, you can do so. The room guidelines, replica to those governed at the Bella Viana, Lago Vista and Venezia Clubhouses, are as follows: • A card/game group can be in the schedule no more than once a week. You can be in the schedule less than once a week such as: once or twice a month. • One time club events or meetings may be booked and take priority over card/game groups. We maintain two card/game group members contact information in the calendar and, as a courtesy for when we book one time club events or meetings, we give you a one week’s cancellation notice. • We reserve the right to cancel a card/game group no more than two times a month and we do not move cancelled sessions to another room. • If your card/game group uses half the tables, we can book another card/game group at the same time. We will schedule the new card groups on Thursday, February 15th at 10am outside the Lifestyles Activities Office. A volunteer with a deli ticket number stand will be available at 8:30am to start handing out numbers.
Let’s Tally Them Up...
Solivita Lifestyles volunteers please turn in your final Volunteer Log Sheet for the 20172018 season to the Lifestyles Activities Office by Friday, March 2nd. Volunteer hours will be accepted and tallied for services rendered from March 1, 2017 through February 28, 2018. If you are a volunteer and you’d like to help at the many various Lifestyles events (Valentines Dinners, Mardi Gras Street Parade, Solivita Car Show, St. Patrick’s Day Street Party, Spring Carnival, etc) please stop by the Lifestyles Activities Office or call us at 863-427-7125 for more information, dates, times and other volunteer opportunities needed that might be of interest to you. Cupid is Out and About! By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge February is the month of love. Will Cupid hit you with an arrow this month? Or you may have been struck already. In any case, I will keep a look out for all those starry eyes.
February 2nd is Groundhog Day
Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow this year and give us six more weeks of winter? Or will he predict an early spring? Will it even matter in Florida? Are you superstitious? Either way we are in the Sunshine State and don’t have too much to worry about!

February 19th is Presidents’ Day
This holiday was originally celebrated in honor of Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays. Then over the years it became known as Presidents’ Day honoring all the presidents. Movie Pass
Let’s talk about the movies. Who doesn’t like watching movies at the cinema? It’s normally very expensive, but there is an app called “Movie Pass” where you spend $10 per person a month and you can watch all the movies you want at the cinema. That’s right! However, you can only watch one movie a day and it can’t be the 3D or the Imax version, but it’s still a great deal. It does require an iPhone or android phone though. For more information, visit www.moviepass.com or check it out in the app store. It does take five to seven business days for you to receive your card and once you link it with your app, you’re good to go. The first time you use it you will most likely need to contact customer service to get the card activated. I have tried this out and overall, I think it’s great!

HOW PREPARED ARE YOU? Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
S
olivita CERT has three goals: 1) Be ready to effectively respond to a disaster; 2) Help residents be prepared; and 3) Support county/regional responses. This month’s tip focuses on item 2 above—resident preparedness. We just emerged from the official hurricane season and have transitioned into wildfire season and tornado season. These latter hazards occur with no warning. It pays to be well prepared throughout the entire year. In any large-scale disaster (bigger than your home or immediate neighborhood), weather-related or man-made, you need to: 1. Be Aware of What is Happening. This might be watching weather developments (like Hurricane Irma) on news media, having a weather radio (which deals with all hazards) or subscribing to an alert system (like Polk County’s free AlertPolk, at member.everbridge.net/ index/892807736724723#/overview. The Polk County Citizen Information Line is 863-401-2234. 2. Have a Disaster Kit. Also called a survival kit or Go-kit. Typical contents should include 3 days worth of nonperishable food; a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days; some basic hand tools and duct tape and trash bags; flashlights for everyone with extra batteries; first aid kit; toiletries; copies of important papers; your medications for a couple of weeks; pet carrier and supplies and meds; and any necessary life-sustaining powered equipment.
| 12 |
Also the charger for your cell phone(s), including one for use in your car. See our Supply List in the documents on our CERT club webpage on SolivitaHOA.com. 3. Make a Plan. Know what you need to do in a variety of scenarios—weather emergencies, chemical spill evacuations, power outage. This may be shelter in place (if your home is still habitable), go to a friend’s house, go to a hotel out of the area, or may involve evacuation. Where would you go? Do they allow pets? Remember to leave right away. Evacuation routes congest quickly. Depending on the threat, you may need to even leave the state. 4. Have a Communications Plan. Who should you tell— someone out of the area. Then where you are headed and when you expect to get there. Have them keep others informed for you. Take a hardcopy of necessary/ important contacts and their numbers (doctors, pharmacy, insurance, banking) because your cell phone may run out of battery and you may lose access to its contacts file. These recommendations relate to considerations you should make AHEAD OF TIME. When a disaster is upon you is not the time to start thinking about them. No one can ‘catch you up’ then. NO ONE CAN PREPARE FOR YOU—only you know your needs and limitations. This information is brought to you by the Solivita Community Emergency Response Team.

Hello February!
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Happy New Year!! We trust you had a good holiday season! Decorations are all put away, holiday events are past, and now looking ahead at 2018. What will the new year bring? Enjoyment, good times with friends and family, and meaningful pursuits are what we, at Floralawn, wish for you.
Happenings
We are so excited to begin our second year here at Solivita. We have been very busy trimming the native grasses, smaller Palms and Oak Trees. We will soon begin the annual Crape Myrtle tree pruning to provide the awesome array of color they produced in 2017! Coming also this month will be shrub cut backs. You might be thinking, “What is he talking about?” Some shrubbery will get thin and leggy. Spring time is the best time to remove, sometimes, up to half of the plant so that it will regenerate with new, healthy foliage. An example of plants to be cut back are, Gold Mound, Viburnum, Ruellia, and Arborcola, just to name a few. As you read this article, I am hoping to have the stump removal project
complete. In early January we had around 240 of the some 500 out, irrigation repaired and soil back in the hole. The new trees will begin to be installed sometime this spring and you will be notified by the HOA as to the progress of that project.
Floralawn University
We met again in January for our second session of Floralawn University. We had over 100 of our employees at this event for hours, training on various topics from mower operation to proper edging. We have two more training session scheduled before the summer.
Coffee Talk
Our next Coffee Talk will be in the Starlite Ballroom on Friday, February 16th at 8:30am. See you there!

Stretch the Possibilities! Spa Talk
By Crystal Bethea Owner of Riviera Spa Massage We all have bad daily habits that we don’t notice until something starts hurting. These bad habits are the root cause of many painful conditions. As a preventative, however, we can turn these bad habits into good ones that we can incorporate into our daily lives. You may think of stretching as something only performed by our golfers and pickleball players, but we all need to stretch in order to protect our mobility and independence.
Where to Start
What most people don’t understand is that stretching has to happen on a regular basis and throughout the day. I understand that with a whole body full of muscles, the idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming. So here are some helpful tips to set you on the right track. • Your Rivera Spa & Fitness Center and The Palms offer classes like Breath, Stretch and Relax, Yoga, and Aquatics that you really should take advantage of at least twice a week. This is a great benefit and a way to join others on the same journey to good health. • Riviera Spa Massage has licensed and certified medical massage professionals that perform active/isolated

stretching, Thai/yoga stretching, and massage to flush accumulated waist (lactic acid) trapped in your muscles to help aid in your wellness. • Do it yourself throughout the day by undoing the position you’re in. There is no way to teach you a stretch for every activity you do throughout the day, but if you take the time to reverse the position of the joint and stretch in the opposite direction, you will lengthen tight tissue and reduce repetitive strain on the joints. Don’t forget to check your posture.
The Cumulative Effect of Stretching
You’ll need to stretch over time and remain committed to the process. Stretching once today won’t magically give you the flexibility and mobility you’re looking for. It may have taken you months to build that level of restriction and it can take just as long to achieve desired results. So keep realistic goals in mind and stick with it. Maintenance is key! Don’t wait until it’s a problem. New Year goals...start stretching today and take full advantage of your Spa & Fitness team. Your body will thank you for it.
