The Magical Idea Room
[ Department] Articles
By Jana Malik Director of Activities
Often times I am asked, especially by the Lifestyles Activities volunteers, how I come up with event and decorating ideas, crazy and all. The Lifestyles Activities staff get really cool ideas mostly from Pinterest and social media, but my ideas come from an unusual place. When I first started in Activities, Pinterest and Facebook weren’t around. I’d get ideas from Prom supply catalogs because they offer an array of themes. Working with everyone, we’d adapt some of the ideas in the pictures to our events. As time went on, I would focus on one item that would become the inspiration for the whole event. As an example, we used “a red bow” for the Holiday Parties, “Godiva chocolate” for Valentine’s Day dinners or specific colors. Then, we’d brainstorm on how to build the event from there. Nowadays, when I enter the Lifestyles Activities bathroom, which is where we store supplies for upcoming or recently held events, ideas just pop up in my head. Oddly, no other location offers me the same inspirations; it’s only there. That room works especially when I’m puzzled about something big or really small (and both are equally important to us). When I do, I open the door real big and wide and almost yell to everyone in the office “I’ve got an idea!” and pretty much most of the time, it works for the team, and we go with it. Quick example - Jennifer in the office suggested the flower centerpiece for the Valentine’s Cinderella Ball Gala be in a Cinderella carriage vase and while we all liked how it would look, we quickly knew this would be too costly. But, a few weeks later when we started working on this event’s budget, I couldn’t stop thinking about how unique it would be to have the flowers in a carriage vase. After entering the Lifestyles bathroom, a light bulb went on to use the clear round “bubble/fish bowl” vase and add carriage wheels made out of gold curling wire and glue it on the vase for a cost-effective look. It’s quite entertaining if you’ve ever been in the Lifestyles Activities office when this happens or when any of us get excited about a really good idea.

Update on the Rays of Service Solivita Volunteer Program
One of the best Solivita programs that has ever started, for both Solivita departments and for resident volunteers, has been the Rays of Service Volunteer Program. Over 10,000 inside Solivita hours are accumulated by resident volunteers annually! Some of the examples of volunteer assistance include: Movie Nights, the Library, Ticket Sales, department office volunteers, newsletter editors, assemblers and deliverers, Lifestyles event assistance, Solivita committee members, audio/visual assistance and so, so, much more. 1. The Solivita Volunteer Program started small and included
residents who volunteer outside Solivita. However, today the number of volunteers has grown, as has the community. Therefore, we are no longer able to thank residents who volunteer outside of Solivita. Effective March 1, 2019, the Rays of Service Volunteer Program will only thank residents who volunteer assisting Solivita departments. 2. Lifestyles Activities has a sign-up sheet with assorted events and tasks needing volunteers. Call 863-427-7125 to sign-up. We do not call our volunteer database unless we do not have enough sign-ups. 3. Throughout the year, we ask volunteers to turn in their log sheets by a certain deadline. Please keep an eye out for these dates either in my article or in the Department Articles section in Reflections. Don’t forget to write your name. 4. Turn in your Volunteer Log Sheet by February 28th for volunteers’ hours (inside and outside Solivita) worked from March 1, 2018-February 28, 2019 to the Lifestyles Activities office to finalize the 2018-2019 season.

From the World of Fitness & Wellness
Articles
By Jamar Edge Director of Fitness & Wellness Where did January go? Hard to believe we are already in February. I’m hoping you are sticking to your New Year’s Resolution of being a healthier you. Speaking of a healthier you, we are looking forward to helping you with your progress. Here are a few things to help you out....
New Class Schedule
As many of you may have already heard, we have tweaked our schedule just a bit. With tweaking the schedule, we are able to add more classes to the schedule to keep up with the growing demand. I’m excited about the change and the classes we have added and are looking to add in the future. Make sure you grab a schedule or check online for class times and descriptions. I’m sure there are a few that will peak your interest.
Health Awareness Month
February is American Heart Month. We all know the effects of Heart disease but it can be prevented when we make healthy choices. Things as easy as replacing salt with different seasonings and adding physical activity to your daily routine are ways to keep your heart strong and healthy.
one of my time here, he has worked diligently to keep our courts above standard. Here is a little something about Keith... He and his wife arrived in Solivita in 2003 from Rochester, NY, where he had worked for United Airlines for 32 years. In 2007, Chasidy Calantoni, who was the Fitness Director at the time, asked if he would be interested in helping groom the courts and getting them ready for play each morning. He agreed and found himself working for Dick Stockton of U.S. Open and Wimbledon fame and his court maintenance company. After Dick’s tenure of maintaining the courts came to an end, Keith gladly took over and formed his own company (DenKeith Tennis Management, LLC). In the many times I’ve corresponded with Keith, serving the Solivita community has always been a great pleasure for him. Keith has always been a very active person participating in sports and was the first athlete from his high school to receive a full football scholarship to the University of Memphis. His most memorable moment was being on the winning Solivita softball team five years in a row from 2006 to 2010 and receiving MVP honors in 2007. Once again, on behalf of the Solivita Club, thank you Keith for all you have done to keep the courts running smoothly. We wish you a very Happy Retirement!
Polk Senior Games
It’s almost that time again. Once again, Solivita will play host to the Polk Senior Games Pickleball Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for March 4th-6th, so come out and cheer on your fellow homeowners as the bring home the gold!
Happy Retirement!!!
Thank you to Keith Bopp, who after 11+ years, is retiring from maintaining the fantastic recreation courts (Tennis, Pickleball, Bocce and Shuffleboard) for this beautiful community of Solivita. I have known Keith the better part of 10+ years and from day

Punxsutawney Phil is the famous Groundhog who predicts winter or early spring on February 2nd every year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If he sees his shadow and returns to his hole, supposedly, we get six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we get an early spring. This holiday has been celebrated since 1887. How do they keep that critter alive?

On February 14th, show your other half that you have all the love necessary to shower them with on this special day. Don’t forget that no one knows you better than your other half. This also means you know what will happen if you don’t live up to their expectations on Valentine’s Day. Don’t let it come to that!
Celebrated this year on February 18th, Presidents’ Day was originally celebrated in honor of Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays. Over the years it became known as Presidents’ Day honoring all the presidents.

Plan to Replace Smoke Detector Batteries Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
Your Community Emergency Response Team is again offering to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. We offer this to residents who can’t or shouldn’t go up on a ladder to do this. This annual project runs from March (Daylight Saving Time begins) through April (maybe into May). We are announcing this now so we can get an earlier start on our schedule.
too old (date of manufacture is printed on the back of the unit), replace the whole detector rather than just their batteries. Be sure to buy units that are “wired with battery back-up” (each new one comes with a battery). They should cost about $16 each and are available at both local home improvement stores in the electrical departments. Unless you have a fireplace or other source of combustion inside your home, you do not need a carbon monoxide detector (the combination units are about $34). We can also replace your units for a small donation. If your detectors aren’t too old, you need to replace the 9-volt battery in each one (once a year). When the battery loses its charge with age, the unit will begin an annoying chirp sound every 45 seconds or so. Taking the battery out won’t help because that just assures the unit will find inadequate (zero) voltage. Please have us replace your batteries now rather than call later in the year when they start that annoying chirping (likely in the middle of the night). If you change your own batteries, be sure to observe the polarity and press the test button afterward to reset the unit (hold the test button in till the unit alarms, then release).
Before you call to have your batteries replaced, consider how old they are (when your house was constructed). If you are wondering why, it is because smoke detectors only work for about eight years. Then their detection sensors degrade to the point that they may not detect smoke! If your detectors are
CERT offers this service in the spring ONLY, so this is your chance! If you want to have your batteries changed (with your batteries or ours), call the CERT number at 863-514-6728 to get your name on the list. You will be called back to arrange the visit, starting in March.

Spring is Around the Corner By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn
I hope you’re enjoying our fabulous Florida winter with its mild temperatures and sunny skies. This is definitely the time of year to be out and about! We see many residents taking advantage of the amenities around Solivita and soaking up winter warmth and fresh air. Our Floralawn crews continue to work hard on Solivita’s lawncare and landscaping so that the community stays beautiful year-round.
heads and other sprinkler components. A February task that most residents enjoy is the change of annuals in the common area beds. The new colors always bring fresh energy and cheer.
Our January Tasks
Lawn fertilization was one task that kept us busy in January. Floralawn follows an annual fertilization schedule with the first treatment of the year spanning January and February. Fertilizing at this time of the year ensures thick, healthy grass in the spring. In January we also finished another round of trimming and weeding. Over the winter, we always conduct an annual property-wide inspection of the irrigation system. January saw the completion of the initial inspection plus the repair of most spray heads. We also worked to correct spray patterns that had become inefficient or misaligned during the year.
Training Classes
One of our winter tasks at Floralawn is to make sure our crews are complete and ready for the active growing season. To this end, we conduct training classes in a range of subjects for our employees. Last month, our employees received training in the following areas: • • • • • • • •
Shrub and tree pruning techniques Best mulching practices Safe driving of lawn and landscape equipment Proper mower operation Identification of diseased plants Container plant installation Annuals Mixing herbicides
Our February To-Do List
We have several areas of focus for February. The first is pruning the crape myrtle trees throughout the community. It will take us two months to finish all the crape myrtle pruning.
We occasionally offer these classes for Solivita residents. Please check our online calendar for dates of upcoming classes. Go to SolivitaHOA.com. Log in and then click on the “Docs and Info” tab. On the left side, scroll down to Floralawn to find the calendars.
As mentioned above, lawn fertilization occurs over January and February. That will be another task this month, as well as finishing the irrigation system inspection and repairing spray

Spa Talk: Hugs are Powerful & Touch is Healing By Crystal Bethea
Owner of Riviera Spa Massage
What is Oxytocin?
Also known as the “love hormone” or “cuddle hormone,” oxytocin is produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the pituitary gland. I’m sure we’ve all heard about the kind given artificially to women to induce labor. But the truth is, oxytocin has many functions and both men and women produce it naturally. Oxytocin is a feel good hormone that creates attachments between two people. It impacts the way we think and act by directly affecting our emotions, cognitive and social behaviors.
How Does it Affect Us?
Research has shown that when oxytocin is released, it can reduce the harmful effects of stress levels. Stress releases the cortisol hormone that’s responsible for high blood pressure, weight gain and heart disease. It’s also said to boost the immune system and promotes better sleep. To stimulate this love hormone, it is recommended to give at least 20 second hugs or hold hands for 10 seconds. This simple interaction promotes feelings of love, wellbeing and develops social bonds.
Make the Connection!
Think about how beneficial touch is for a baby’s emotional development? This is true for adults as well, but lack of leads to touch deprivation. Deprivation leads to conditions of depression, aggression and eating disorders. We all want to live and lead healthier lifestyles as a family and with our friends. Make it a point to hold on just a little bit longer while you shake hands and give hugs. The affects will benefit you both.
